If you can, please consider donating to help this family - friends of friends - evacuate Gaza.
"Wessam is a gynecologist and mother of Luna, 19 years old, in her second year of school, studying Information Technology at Al-Azhar University; Dawoud, 18 years old who just started his first year of medicine after finishing high school in June 2023 and was among the top of his class; and Marcel, who is 11. Khaled, their father, is a GP.
While Wessam and Khaled are doing what they can to help the people of Gaza, they are devastated and frightened for their children. They urgently need your support to leave Gaza. To secure an exit through the Rafah border, each family member over 16 must pay $5,000 USD for the well-established Hala Company to facilitate their exit to Egypt. Children under 16 pay $2,500 USD. And there are additional processing fees. We seek your help in securing $23,000 USD as quickly as possible."
If you can't donate, please reblog.

reijean hitchannie college band AU headcanons that may not lead to fic form but i feel strongly about because i did undergrad at a huge university with a prestigious music school where everyone was depressed + i've been giffing kids on the slope (2012) w reiner's seiyuu + the given akihiko/haruki reijean agenda:
all the warriors grew up playing classical music w/ varying degrees of parental pressure, for example mr leonhart is a violinist and annie's first and forever teacher so maybe she maims him here too (he's like jk simmons in whiplash); karina is into classical music as a status symbol
by contrast hitch and jean know how to have fun. hitch learned everything from youtube, jean's mom let him quit piano lessons as a kid so he came back to it on his own when he realized it was cool/thought it could get him girls (it doesn't) (inspo: nick cave)
annie (lead/rhythm guitar), hitch (vocals/rhythm guitar/octave pedal "bass"), jean (vocals/keys/bass), reiner (drums). reiner would do bass if he had sukuna arms
Tumblr media
reijean meet in intro to audio engineering which counts as a science class for some reason, form the band after roping annie into their final recording project; annie's an undeclared part-time student who mostly works
first they try marco as rhythm guitarist but he is too jazzy and cannot wrap his mind around rock tone, annie is furious (low stakes version of trost; sounds derogatory but marco just looks like a jazz guy)
hitch is a business major who thinks music is a hobby, kinda yasu from nana energy. annie recruits her after overhearing her teaching/berating marlowe before he absolutely bombs an open mic night
hitch is an acoustic girlie (dark ukulele past) but annie and jean take her shopping and she picks a danelectro stock '59
annie plays a jaguar bc of her short fingers, she's some combo of lindsey jordan / luna li but also j mascis
reiner's favorite drummer is karen carpenter, deadass
hitch is the least disciplined which equal turns teaches them to relax but incites rage, annie and jean lock her in a room w reiner bc this bitch cannot count
everyone sings but especially hitch and jean, the vibe is michelle zauner and craig hendrix; i think they hype up the other two who are very self conscious
main songwriters are annie and jean, jean finds jazzy chords that hitch hates
annie was concertmaster of her arts magnet high school orchestra until mikasa showed up and the worst part is violin is mikasa's like, tertiary instrument; now they are ex-gf roommates
opera singer mikasa ruins lives, she is kissing kissing mezzo historia in boy drag (inverse girl armin) in uhhh idk la clemenza di tito
ymir is probably a drummer in a nu riot grrrl band, root of her frenemyship with reiner, also i think she's trying to steal annie and/or hitch
reiner is a cello performance major who became interested in rock percussion after hooking up w eren; eren's taste is incredibly lame, he likes like, dave grohl
eren and mikasa both did piano lessons as kids and she forces him to be her accompanist most of the time, but he and jean tag in and out ever since eren gave himself gamer's carpal tunnel before mikasa's first jury freshman year
jean is Not a music major but he makes money as music majors' accompanist; he could be studio art? or something "reasonable" (a la the MPs, business school hitch), like cybersecurity
annie and marcel = violin, pieck and bertie = viola, reiner and porco = cello
bertolt is living studio ghibli whisper of the heart in italy
for the first half of undergrad reiner lived with marcel in place of porco bc that little shit felt smothered by the galliards bUyINg a whole apartment for their boys, but when marcel graduated pocco moved in and uhhhhh evicted reiner, who thought he had saved enough to make it on his own by living rent free but uhhhhh karina stole it
uhhh pieck looks like my first gay crush (a violist opera singer) so let's say she's studying abroad
point is, reiner is isolated through no one's direct fault, really, besides pock; annie is his closest friend in town and she's such a tsundere about it. he lived on her and mikasa's couch for a week but will never return because it was too awkward even for his broke ass

There are things known and there are things unknown and in between are the doors.
- Jim Morrison, Letters from Joe
Jim Morrison was an enigma and to this day is considered one of the most influential figures in rock and roll history. Morrison’s music - like him - was revolutionary and influenced some of the greatest musicians, artists, and poets of the 20th and 21st Centuries. A rebel and a nonconformist who took the world by storm, Morrison was mysterious but had no qualms about letting out his glorious wild side for all to see, and he believed that in order to create, one must first destroy, a motto that led him to his premature demise.
Many viewed Morrison as a reckless force of nature and a bad influence (we’re talking parents and concerned grandparents). He actually had an IQ of 149 and developed a profound interest in poetry, devouring the romantic works of William Blake and the contemporary Beat verse of Allen Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac while composing his own poems.
Tumblr media
Jim Morrison became a legend despite having died at the age of 27, a striking and unique figure who remained in the annals of rock forever. Morrison thus became part of that fateful 27-year-old club that includes his peers Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin. And to which Amy Winehouse or Kurt Cobain would later join in the later decades. Jim Morrison’s death shook the world on 3 July 1971.
There are two different stories behind Jim Morrison’s cause of death. Both of them are tragic. The most commonly told tale involves Jim Morrison going to the cinema in Paris and returning to his apartment to listen to music after dinner and being found dead in a bathtub.  He is said to have died of a heart attack. Chosen to be laid to rest quietly, no proper investigation was performed to find the main cause of Jim Morrison’s death.
Tumblr media
Another more harrowing story has received more traction in recent times. It highlights a darker picture of his life, one in which he had died of an overdose and was hauled back to his apartment by drug dealers. Jim Morrison’s final hours are a mystery because France did not require postmortem examination at that time. His girlfriend, Pamela Courson told the police that she had found him dead in the bathtub at about 6 am. She also battled drug addiction and died of a drug overdose three years later.
To many, his death seemed like the result of a downward spiral. Fans knew that Jim Morrison struggled with addiction and fame. After the trial, he was found guilty of profanity and denied the charges. Stardom had taken a toll on Jim Morrison and he tried to find peace in Paris. During his time in the city, he wrote every single day. People thought that he was finally healthy and happy. Some of his last pictures capture a young, fit man. The news of his death shocked everyone even though it was not as surprising. Jim Morrison and Pamela Courson have been accounted for indulging in old habits. They used to frequent Parisian nightclubs, the last thing he did before his death.
Tumblr media
Living in Paris one of the first things one does is to make the obligatory visit to Père Lachaise Cemetery where Morrison is buried alongside other iconic artists such as Oscar Wilde, Edith Piaf, Marcel Proust, Frederic Chopin, Isadora Duncan, Sarah Bernhardt, Maria Callas, Rossini etc. He’s not of my generation obviously but there is no question that the music of my parents generation was way cooler than anything today. That’s just my opinion. Listening to The Doors seemed like the perfect sound track to a misspent youth in boarding school.
A musician and a group considered among the most influential and innovative in rock history can never cease to be topical. Jim Morrison with his voice and antics brought drama to rock and roll. If Elvis Presley embodied the rock of a shameless performance if the Beatles and the Beach Boys gave the genre an almost symphonic dimension, and if Bob Dylan transferred more literary content to electric format then Jim Morrison of the Doors took the drama.
The first great attribute of the Doors frontman Jim Morrison was his voice and the charisma of his presence. The man that started shy on stage, with his back to the audience, would become an omnipotent monster, breaking down the limits of performance, even if doped by the effects of acids. With him, rock has never been so dangerous and rebellious, without ever losing the jazz of his voice.
Tumblr media
Critics then and today have said that Morrison wasn’t a great singer because he had limited range. It’s true he had a limited range as I don’t think he ever wandered out of his range, which was on the low side. I think Jim Morrison was very shy about singing and didn’t quite know what to do at first … he was a lover of words in the first place, and managed to hear melodies that would be a good vehicle for the words but he sang very carefully at first, careful to enunciate clearly and make his voice heard. I think for him it was more important that the words were heard by the audience than that his voice should sounds cool. Later he started coming on stronger, risking some screams and weird voices, but I think he was more comfortable reciting words rather than singing them.
To me it’s irrelevant if he was technically a good or a bad singer. Morrison had a powerful dramatic voice that connected and a great rock and roll scream. Is there anything more important than those things in rock music?
As I listen more albums by The Doors I am taken in by the hypnotic quality of his speaking voice, which is partially just genetic and partially learned through his involvement in the theatrical arts makes even the most silliest of lyrics sound profound and powerful. Of course he wasn’t an opera singer, or even your typical pop singer - he had wavering tone sometimes, and, especially as his voice deteriorated from substance abuse and other life-style related choices, his range drastically shrunk.
Tumblr media
To me Morrison didn’t need to have a pretty voice with the type of stuff he was singing, and his unique style made Robbie Krieger’s conventional pop or folk-rock songs sound deeper, more profound. He was a brilliant all around front-man. He may have frustrated some of his bandmates with his behaviour, and I don’t blame them but we would not be talking about The Doors today if it weren’t for Jim Morrison and his voice. I think as a vocalist he was true to his own natural voice and didn’t try to develop it as an “instrument”. I think it’s the conviction and truth in his voice that makes him easy to listen to.

He has written and composed a musical with the understanding of music the same as Steve Vai's making compassions on electric guitars, it was incredible and innovative, imaginative, brilliantly clever, and crazy wild sounds that feel like Jimi Hendrix, and Van Halen, with the swing of Zeppelin and Stevie Ray Von, and throaty sounds, profoundly rooted in the grungy feelings of the 90s yet has the classic vibes of the 60s. He was highlighted on Q94s (about 1 and a half minutes) Home Grown Rocker on June 26, 2022, with Professor Jim Price, for the album Duriez, and the song "!34" to be played for all parts of Pennsylvania to hear broadcasted over the airwaves.

VERONICA SWIFT, SHELDON CONCERT HALL, 5 NOVEMBER 2022
Having seen VERONICA SWIFT with then new favorite George Cables on a stream from Smoke Jazz Club, I was more than willing to widen my appreciation of singers with Cecile McLorin Savant on the agenda soon. True to form though, I didn’t dig into her latest Bitter Earth where she did songs like He Hit Me (and Made It Feel Like A Kiss) and You’ve Got to Be Carefully Taught both ironically and unironically. That marked her as extending her jazz singer chops.
I should have anticipated some sort of evolution as she’s just 28 even as she is the child of Hod O’Brien and Stephanie Nakasian with jazz in her blood. But I went in wondering/hoping that we might see Emmet Cohen who is another brilliant rising star and on the schedule later in the season.
Nope.
The stage had a piano but also a keyboard next to it. Acoustic and electric guitar and bass. Drums with plexiglass around it. Three music stands for horns.
Okay?
She opened with Bitter Earth’s solemnity. Her perfectly controlled voice was fragile and vulnerable one second and powerful the next. The die was cast. She also showed how she inhabits lyrics with gesture, expression, and stance to further tell the story. So a bit of cabaret with jazz which continued with How Lovely To Be A Woman (more straight up and irony), A Little Taste (?) with big horns arranged by trumpeter James Sarno who took a sold with plunger mute, Mel Torme’s A Lonesome Feeling To Go Back Home (also a story she made personal) into I Don’t Want To Cry Anymore where she scatted with the horns. Then another Bitter Earth dual tune, You’re The Dangerous Type.
So far, plenty of room for improvisation and interplay. Matisse Picard had some piano solo space on a could of tunes; Ben Williams had an acoustic bass solo; and not only Sarno but trombonist Javier Nero had a solo to which Swift scatted along. She was bright eyed, in the moment, equally engaged with the music as music and as story. Not the set I saw at Smoke, but recognizable.
Then it turns out things shifted. But Blood Sweat and Tears’ You Make Me So Very Happy seemed innocent enough; it was the transition to the genre-defying second half. Williams was over on electric bass and her mother’s guitarist Chris Wagner came out. Rocker More and More followed with electric bass solo and the horn section, four pieces counting Swift, wailed.
Then we were fully off on the adventure which makes up her next album project. Do Nothing Til You Hear From Me really was Duke Ellington meets Jimi Hendrix with elegant horns but soaring guitar and Swift singing through another mic with a fuzz pedal. The band cleared for a duet of Swift and Wagner on acoustic guitar that was a Brazilian flavored take on a Puccini melody with the Turnadot-ic title Severed Heads. Then she throttled back up with Nine Inch Nails’ Closer a la James Brown where she scatted with tenor saxophonist Anibal Rojas with the band properly powerful behind them. Then they did Sing from drummer Brian Viglione’s duo the Dresden Dolls which, I read, is dark Cabaret, so more genre crossing. Viglione was strong all night long but also striking in a bowler and black and white striped shirt evoking Marcel Marceau.
The encore was Queen’s song Keep Yourself Alive with Swift consciously evoking Janis Joplin. She’s now lived longer than Joplin so there’s more un/irony. I get the feeling she’s going to keep making quite alive music.
Altogether stunning, all the more so because our Sheldon seats are quite close. This time Row C, dead center for more intensity from a smart and powerful singer and artist.

Billboards #1 1961
Under the cut.
Bert Kaempfert – “Wonderland By Night” -- January 9, 1961
It's an instrumental, but it's a sexy one. It makes me think of being alone at night in a big city hoping to find someone to go home with, if just for a night. It definitely sounds of its time, but it's still very good.
The Shirelles – “Will You Love Me Tomorrow” -- January 30, 1961
For all the innocent-sounding music and beat, this is a straightforward song about sex. In 1961. Also a great song.
Lawrence Welk – “Calcutta” -- February 13, 1961
Blargh. Lawrence Welk's music gives me a pain. To say this sounds like a German music hall song is an insult to German music halls. Whatever music hall this plays in, they have a strict no-alcohol policy and don't serve caffeinated drinks either because they're opposed to every kind of drug. You get skim milk or nothing. There is nothing Calcutta-ish about it.
Chubby Checker – “Pony Time” -- February 27, 1961
An attempt to recapture The Twist. But that was lightning in a bottle. This is some dead fireflies in a jar. Unlike the Twist, the dance is sort of complicated. More importantly, the song doesn't make me want to dance at all. Sadly, not good.
Elvis Presley – “Surrender” -- March 20, 1961
I don't feel like Elvis really connected with this song. I certainly don't. It sounds like it belongs in one of his movies. He ramps up the belting, there's a background chorus that sounds like it’s from a Disney movie of the time, and the mariachi band overwhelms it all. How do you overwhelm Elvis? He's trying to sing to someone to seduce them, and he's failing with me. An embarrassing song.
The Marcels – “Blue Moon” -- April 3, 1961
This version of Blue Moon deeply annoys me. It's like they'd be embarrassed to sing a heartfelt love song, so they sped it up and threw a bunch of silly noises in instead. Go for the one Obsidian was smart enough to put in Fallout: New Vegas instead, by Frank Sinatra. Or the Mel Tormé version. Or the Chris Isaak version. Not this one.
Del Shannon – “Runaway” -- April 24, 1961
It's about a breakup, not a runaway. He doesn't get why his girlfriend ran away from him. And it is pure melodramatic cheese, yet it works. Del Shannon commits. Also is that a slide whistle? I can't really say it's a good song, but I kinda like it anyway.
Ernie K-Doe – “Mother-In-Law” -- May 22, 1961
Hah hah aren't mothers-in-law awful. That's it, that's the song. It's a bad sitcom joke. And musically it sounds like a commercial jingle. Yuck.
Ricky Nelson – “Travelin’ Man” -- May 29, 1961
The "every woman in an area is exactly the same" subgenre is one I hate. Yes, this means I hate The Beach Boys' "California Girls." The Beatles were absolutely right to send up this kind of bilge with "Back in the USSR." So, I hate this song. The narrator travels around the world and has a girlfriend everywhere, including a "senorita" in Mexico, an "Eskimo" in Alaska, and a "China doll" in China. Really, really bad.
Roy Orbison – “Running Scared” -- June 5, 1961
I think I just don't get Roy Orbison. In this song, he's afraid his wife (probably) will go back to her ex. At the end, she tells her ex to go away and chooses the narrator. The beat is repetitive and insistent as all hell and gives me a headache. I dunno, other people seem to like it. The lyrics are fine. Orbison's singing is fine. I cannot deal with the beat.
Pat Boone – “Moody River” -- June 19, 1961
Listening to Pat Boone is like putting mayonnaise in your ears. And not good mayonnaise. The narrator's girlfriend drowned herself because she felt oh so guilty about cheating on him, and he sounds awful cheery about it. I have another theory as to how she died. But someone like Pat Boone couldn't get convicted if he tried, especially in 1961. Now, how does one get mayonnaise out of one's ears? Probably vinegar, that's the solution to everything.
Gary U.S. Bonds – “Quarter To Three” -- June 26, 1961
What an odd name. The song sounds like an impromptu recording of a band at a club. It does make me want to dance. Gary shouts the song, sounding like he's had a few Red Bulls. I kinda dig it. It slaps.
Bobby Lewis – “Tossin’ And Turnin'” -- July 10, 1961
The narrator couldn't sleep because he couldn't stop thinking about you. He's got an awful lot of energy, considering that. But I understand that kind of nervous energy. Great saxophone solo too. It's a fun dance song about romantic desperation.
Joe Dowell – “Wooden Heart (Muss I Denn)” -- August 28, 1961
The narrator says not to leave him because he doesn't have a wooden heart and he might die. The way Joe sings the song though, I think he is lying. He's made of wood and will never be a real boy.
The Highwaymen – “Michael” -- September 4, 1961
So this is a version of "Michael, Row the Boat Ashore." Sung by the most comfortable and privileged people imaginable, who may also be on valium. I'm sure the members of The Highwaymen had some kind of pain in their lives; everyone does. But you'd never know it from their rendition. They seem to have had all emotion surgically removed. Absolutely terrible. It belongs in a Twilight Zone episode. I had to listen to the Harry Belafonte version afterward to cleanse my brain.
Bobby Vee – “Take Good Care Of My Baby” -- September 18, 1961
The narrator lost his girlfriend because he cheated on her, and he regrets it. He's telling her new boyfriend to take care of her. It's fine. I think maybe it's too fast. Too much snare drum.
Ray Charles – “Hit The Road Jack” -- October 9, 1961
Ray, I love you. Also Margie Hendrix, the lead backup singer here. I hope Ray worked the same magic he did in 1960, and the rest of 1961 will be good.
Dion – “Runaround Sue” -- October 23, 1961
Not only does Sue cheat all over the place, but also "she'll love you and she'll put you down." I like the song. It's upbeat and yet the singer sounds appropriately bitter. It's obviously no "Hit the Road Jack", but it's good.
Jimmy Dean – “Big Bad John” -- November 6, 1961
Yep, Jimmy Dean the sausage guy. It's one of those baritone spoken story things. I do not like those at all. So I'm not the audience for this. As a simple folk tale about a guy everyone's afraid of because he's so big, but then saves a bunch of lives at the cost of his own, it's fine. I wish it were sung though.
The Marvelettes – “Please Mr. Postman” -- December 11, 1961
An early Motown girl group song. The narrator is waiting for a letter from her boyfriend, which isn't there and clearly hasn't been there in a long time. Not one of my favorites, as the background singers sound weirdly like beeps to me. But still good.
The Tokens – “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” -- December 18, 1961
The saga of this song seems to be a convoluted semi-accidental stealing thing, and I'm not qualified to get into it. I do like it, but I liked it more as a child; I think it's a child's song. But the song it originated from is much more interesting. Look up Zulu singer Soloman Linda's "Mbube."
BEST OF 1961: "Hit the Road Jack"    WORST OF 1961: A lot to choose from again, but I'm going with "Michael"

Finding the perfect name for your newborn baby may take some time and careful consideration, but it can also be very interesting.
In fact, it's one of the first and biggest decisions you have to make as a new parent. Are you looking for a son to speak of a family tradition or celebrate a cultural tradition? Whatever your approach, you'll find lots of great options on the following list of the 1,000 most popular boys, according to Social Security Administration (SSA). Take a look to help you narrow down your favorites list (or inspire new ones) and enjoy the experience of finding your favorite name for your new son.

2018 Year End Compilation
BOOK LIST: DANCING WITH A DOZEN DOORSTOPS
My goal for 2018 was a simple one: read twelve of the great literary doorstops of world literature. You know what I mean by doorstops: those intimidating tomes that take up their own shelves in bookstores and private libraries, the ones that are less books than literary challenges for readers. What I wanted to do this year was read one of these doorstops a month--and I succeeded! I succeeded so well, in fact, that I actually finished my self-assigned twelve in early November. Go figure. Anyhow, here is the list of the books I read this past year, with the twelve doorstops in bold.
