The Secret Garden (2020)
Considering we’ve seen three other adaptations of The Secret Garden before (four if you count the lost 1919 version), this iteration's unlikely to be your favorite… but there’s certainly a chance. Though it tweaks the original material (in interesting ways), it maintains the spirit of Frances Hodgson Burnett's story about confronting - and overcoming - grief.
In 1947, Mary Lennox (Dixie Egerickx) is found alone in her home after her parents die from cholera. Sent from British India to live in her uncle’s large, isolated manor in England, Mary begins exploring the grounds and finds an abandoned garden that seems to possess near-magical properties.
We’ve seen plenty of movies that begin with a child being orphaned - it’s an easy way to address childhood fears of abandonment and set our protagonist on an unsupervised adventure. Rarely is it done this harshly. Dirty, alone, and hungry, Mary is rescued, only to be forced to abandon her childhood imagination and whisked off to a strange land where she's surrounded by adults who want nothing to do with her. You don't blame them; she's a brat. This means it can take a while before you warm up to our heroine and you will once the garden is discovered.
Ultimately, the film is about grief. There are many sad people in Misselthwaite Manor and they’ve all chosen to deal with their feelings by planting themselves in a corner and lashing out at anyone who approaches. No one embodies this better than Mary’s uncle (Colin Firth). He had every opportunity to deal with his feelings before Mary came around but he’s chosen not to. His mood has given the manor a haunted house-like feel. At night, you can hear wailing coming from the corridors Mary has been forbidden from exploring. He isn’t shedding tears over Mary's mother. It’s his wife - her sister - he laments but they were twins. It's clear their pain is linked and could be resolved if they only had a catalyst to fuel change...
Though some characters - like Amir Wilson's Dickon - are under-utilized, "The Secret Garden" does immerse you in its characters. You understand their anguish and when simple things brighten up Mary's day, you'll suddenly realize how attached you are to her. A friendly dog filled me with joy but also made me weary. I couldn't bear the thought of something bad happening to Jemima and wanted to look away... does that make me the same as Uncle Craven? As time passes, you open up like so many of the flowers in the secret garden. You also become ready to feel once more.
Although 2020's The Secret Garden doesn't quite reach the emotional level it wants to, the timeless story still resonates. The tweaks made to the source material keep this film timely and fresh - even for those who already know it. With so much gloom in the world right now, this may be exactly what your family needs. The three strip technicolour process was developed in 1916 and was used in Hollywood films until 1952. The process uses 3 35mm negative film strips run through magenta, cyan and yellow filters. The original RGB footage would be dyed with the new three Cyan, magenta and yellow colours
Red – Cyan
Blue – Yellow
Green – Magenta
The use of this technique on Utopia allowed editors and colourists to specifically alter colours in each show, for example Munden is quoting saying the skies were typically grey in Britain, but the colourists were able to dye them cyan to give the comic book effect. They would have been able to alter colours in terms of brightness and vibrancy but also change colours completely, for example Munden states he and his colourists changed a vans colour altogether.
The grading software Munden and Farrel used is called Nucoda Film Master. They thought of the technique similar to Edwardian hand painted photographs.

After reading an interview with Marc Munden, director of 6 Utopia episodes, he spoke about some of his influences when working on the show. his main two were Roman Polanski, as he admired the combination of romance and violence, two of the story of Utopia's main themes.
The other was of course Kubrick, more specifically his use of centre framing and one point perspectives. I took these screengrabs that clearly illustrate just how meticulous Munden and his DP's were when framing their shots.
