Where Heaven Touches Earth

Recently, my wife and I became fascinated with documentaries about mountain climbers. It started with Free Solo, which tells the story of Alex Honnold and his ascent of one of the most difficult rock faces in Yosemite National Park - without any ropes! We watched awestruck at what Honnold accomplished and, at the same time, appalled by the risks he took. What would drive a man to that?

Next, The Alpinist landed in our playlist. The film kept us on the edge of our seats as it followed Marc-André Leclerc’s obsession with solo climbing America’s most dangerous peaks. Leclerc’s longing to experience the highest heights eventually led to his tragic death.

Other tales of alpinism followed, and after watching scores of people ante up their lives to summit the loftiest peaks on the planet, my wife asked the obvious question: Where does that desire come from? Why do mountains so mesmerize us?

In the early 2000s, the United Nations declared 2009 “International Year of Mountains” and dedicated it with the slogan, “We are all mountain people.” Whatever the UN meant, that phrase summarizes well the role mountains play in Scripture. From start to finish, the story of the Bible swirls around mountaintops, and the people of God truly are mountain people. Let me explain.

In the beginning, God created everything, including mountains (Psalm 90:2; 95:4; 104:8). God made man, gave him dominion, and placed him in the garden of Eden on God’s holy mountain (Ezekiel 28:14). This Edenic peak is paradigmatic of all other noteworthy mountains in Scripture because here God dwelt with man. On the mountain, heaven touches earth. However, man’s stay on these blessed heights was short-lived. He chose death, and down he went from paradise.

Throughout the rest of God’s story, mountains grant a foretaste of when heaven and earth will be renewed - God and man together again. Noah, Abraham, Moses, and Elijah all met God on the mountain. The temple and tabernacle, both modeled after Eden, had their own mini-mountains in the form of the altar. And Zion towered over all other rival heights as “the mount that God desired for his abode” (Psalm 68:15-16).

Jesus regularly sought God on the mountain (Matthew 14:23; Mark 6:46). But more than that, Jesus was God on the mountain. He met man there in thunder and cloud (Mark 9:2-8), reuniting heaven and earth. All the alpine cords of Scripture climax in Christ. He calls his own to join him on the mountain (Mark 3:13), and from the mountaintop he commissions his new humanity to mediate his dominion to the ends of the earth (Matthew 28:16-20). And one day, those kingdom subjects will climb further up and further in to dwell with God on the Mountain forever (Revelation 21:10).

In Scripture, mountains stand as metaphors in stone. They are the place where heaven meets earth, where God descends to man. They are monolithic reminders of the enormous bliss of Eden...

Mountains awaken this sweet desire. We want to dwell with God. The booming invitation of Aslan to “Come further up! Come further in!” leaves us breathless. Shakes us to the soul. We ache to ascend to Eden - but better.

Massive granite arrows, mountains point beyond themselves to Someone far higher and more thrilling - to the One where all the beauty comes from. If we mistake them for the God they beckon us to know, they become stone idols, dragging their worshipers down. But if we heed their call to climb, we may admit with Lewis, “All my life the God of the Mountain has been wooing me” (Till We Have Faces, 87).

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again Any time I get down I just can’t help but be happy, sometimes I get so sad I tell myself that I’ll never be happy again and I really believe it but then a few hours will pass and I just can’t help but be happy or find something that makes me feel really good. The one thing that without fail always brings back my spirit is the mountains, mountaineering, and alpinists. Being a kid growing up in a small dead end town in Montana the only thing our shitty little valley had going for us we’re the mountains. Hamilton is In between the bitterroot portion of the Rocky Mountains and the sapphire mountain range. Growing up in the 21st century is hard enough as is let alone in Montana, the state sat at under a million people in population my whole life which to put in scale… Montana is the 4th biggest state in the continental US, the city of LA alone has almost 4 million residents alone. I hated where I lived I felt so disconnected from the whole world, I was always interested in fast fashion, luxury, fancy cars, high society, tall buildings, traffic, huge department stores. Mile long malls. Culture. So as you might be able to understand I absolutely despised my town and my life. Then one day something changed without anyone’s influence i suddenly adored my small town and I fell in love with the mountains I really couldn’t get enough I started getting into bouldering and rock climbing. I started going hiking every day and I started fishing more (I was always fishing and hiking as a kid and I was very talented at both i just never had a love for it before). And then I watched the documentary 14 peaks about Nims Purja and his project possible, I had never seen anything like it, and unlike everyone else I wasn’t interested in his coverage on Everest at all what I really was interested in was the mountain called K2, something bout it perked my ear and I ran with it, I went to the library and read every book I could on the mountain from biography’s of people who have survived k2, to the stories of tragedies, then down to the nitty gritty technical wordy books about the mountain, I have an immense knowledge of K2 that is completely useless to anyone around me besides for me I just can’t get enough something about it just pricks me some sort of way, I Nim’s entire project and story really infatuated me the way he believes in people and the way he inspires himself in such a confident not complex way really struck a cord with me, the way he respected his fellow sherpas and told their stories as much as his made the world for me. The nest thing I watched that completely grabbed me was the documentary on Marc-André Leclerc The Alpinist it effected me just the same way that’s Nims journey did except in a much honest heartening way as I’m sure you will understand if you watch and read his story. For them it’s/it was never about WOW LOOK AT ME I CLIMBED A MOUNTAIN IM COOL. It is always about the mental obstacles that they put themselves three or didn’t put themselves threw, with Marc-André Leclerc he described it in a way that when I was climbing he didn’t think about a single other thing then where his next step in going to be and he was able to just shut off his mind in an instant as soon as he hit the mountain and that’s exactly how I feel. Anyway my arms tired.

The mountain climbing soloist Marc-André Leclerc was little known, this documentary makes him “unforgettable,” a gripping addition to the extreme climbing 🧗‍♀️ genre.

The best mountain climber of the century was an unknown young Canadian🇨🇦 Marc-André Leclerc died at age 25 after achieving peerless free solo ascents on forbidding walls of rock and ice. A documentary, ‘The Alpinist,’ has pulled him out of anonymity.

Curiously, the best climber of the century had flown under the majority of radars. Leclerc’s brief passage through the world of mountaineering leaves behind it an astonishing intensity that has been masterfully captured in a documentary titled The Alpinist, directed by Peter Mortimer, who was also responsible for Valley Uprising and The Dawn Wall.

When Mortimer first heard about Leclerc, he experienced the same thing as everybody else: after reading about a climb in Patagonia he was intensely impressed, but the more he tried to find out about Leclerc, the less he found. It is not just that the Canadian did not use social media – he didn’t even own a mobile phone. But it was clear that the climbing community was witnessing an extraordinary athlete capable of scaling any remote peak.

Leclerc’s story is much more than just another story of climbing: it is a story of his commitment to life, a much simpler life that will inspire some and confound others. But thanks to The Alpinist, Leclerc will not fall into obscurity, not only because during his brief existence he redefined the limits of what is possible in mountaineering, but also because of his extraordinary capacity to find happiness with the bare minimum and to extract the energy he needed to face life from the mountains that he climbed.

On 5th March 2018, he died along with his climbing partner Ryan Johnson in an avalanche after carving out a new route on the North Face of Mendenhall Towers, in Alaska. Leclerc was 25 years old and barely known to the wider public, but it is fair to say that it could be decades before another climber manages to achieve what the Canadian did on his own: the first solo ascent of the Infinite Patience route on Mount Robinson’s Emperor Face; Torre Egger in Patagonia in winter; a solo ascent of The Corkscrew on Cerro Torre in 18 hours… as well as numerous free solo first ascents (without ropes and harnesses) on rock, ice, or a mixture of both.
