PHUTURE MEMORIEZ: THE ART OF WAR
The Art of War – Phuture Memoriez Release Date: October 9th, 2019
Track Listing:
1. Manoeuvering 2. Laying Plans 3. Terrain 4. Attack By Stratagem 5. Army On The March 6. NRG Or NRJ 7. Weak Points And Strong 8. Attack By Fire 9. The Use Of Spies 10. Future Memories 11. Variations In Tactics 12. Passion With Fire
Phuture Memoriez is a new project based in Vancouver consisting of Marc Blaquiere on vocals, bass keys, and the MPC beats, and Jessica Blaquiere who does synth and effects.
Both artists share duties on sampling as well. The band has stated that this album "highlights the gloriousness of the Akai MPC Live, as the foundations of each song were written using this work station. Thus, the album pays homage to the sounds and old school hip-hop nature of the MPC.” There's a lot of deep bass, and the whole thing has sort of a dreamy atmosphere. There are some tracks with no vocals, and there are a lot of extended beats. Although this is a concept album, there is a lot of range in the musical elements—the tempos and style change, sometimes drastically throughout. I was impressed by how much is explored amongst 12 tracks, especially for a first release.
Each song on this album is named after a chapter in Sun Tzu's The Art of War, hence the title. The concepts of each track detail different types of wars, whether amongst others or within oneself. The overall mood, especially in the lyrics, is a bit depressing; it almost has an existential feel to it. It's very immersive and dark musically. You can hear the melancholy emotions and angst throughout, both in the vocals and mixing. While some of this synth is upbeat, much more of it creates a moody, gloomy atmosphere.
This has the feel of a video game soundtrack in many parts. It's ambient and electronic.
There is a lot of sampling of dialogue, distorted sound effects, and looping used. Almost every song has this unique mix to it, so it's really interesting to hear more than once. I noticed new sounds with every listen. The engineering and production is simple, but effective. I can tell each new sound bit was used in a careful effort to fit on each track properly, and it works.
Marc's vocals are soft and soothing, although sometimes distorted. He often loops his own voice, adding to the almost psychedelic/‘trippy’ feel of the music. This is especially noticeable in "Attack by Stratagem" and "Future Memories." The reverb effects help maintain a sense of distance – as if his voice is far away, lamenting songs helplessly. This album really had me feeling all kinds of things.
The album sounds very futuristic, yet almost timeless. It reminds me a lot of Depeche Mode. A very ambitious release that explores its potential, and experiments.
Overall, I really enjoyed discovering Phuture Memoriez and their first album. It explores the potential of a synthesizer and manages to incorporate several genres throughout 45 minutes. There's funk, pop, and even a bit of new wave and hip-hop. It's a lot of fun for any electronic music listener and suits many environments, whether alone at night on headphones or at a party.

PHUTURE MEMORIEZ: SUPER AWESOME FANTASTIC DISTORTION MACHINES
Super Awesome Fantastic Distortion Machines – Phuture Memoriez Release Date: December 2nd, 2021
Track Listing:
1. Strokes 2. Blood Clots 3. Overdoses 4. Heart Attack 5. Auto Crash 6. Cancer 7. Axis Mundi 8. Heaven
Phuture Memoriez faces the fear of death in new album Super Awesome Fantastic Distortion Machines. Gallows humour is industrialized through music workstation, Akai MPC Live. It’s grungy with a metallic edge. A rather enjoyable audio representation of some of the worst human experiences.
The album has a post-pop industrial sound, drawing from influences like The Soft Moon, Boy Harsher, Trent Reznor, and Atticus. It feels polished, but still keeps a messy appeal through sour tones and varying percussive textures. The album feels like it was made for a cyberpunk video game soundtrack in the 90s. Dread and determination pull its weight throughout the collection.
“Strokes” treads in robo-synths. Drums snap and zip, as slurred vocals warn of danger. Electric notes ascend in “Blood Clots.” Punchy percussion constrains tense synths, as the song slowly dips into a more nihilistic key.
An infectious melody breaks out in “Heart Attack.” Drum beats sprint behind electric guitar notes and high-pitch sounds. Then, a seamless wavy transition into “Auto Crash.” Twisted tones and haunting synth vocals pulling the listener down into a shadowy soundscape.
“Axis Mundi” is a depressive send-off to ‘the other side.’ Slowly floating down potent electric notes, and guided by robo-vocals, death is accepted as a continuation of a journey. Paths inevitably cross again. A catchy dark melody marks “Heaven,” the ending track of the album. Dramatic rock notes sway, accompanied by faint and muffled voltaic sounds. An uplifting end that keeps its industrial gothic flair.
Phuture Memoriez explores existential dread during a period when it's on a lot of people’s minds. Super Awesome Fantastic Distortion Machines is a distinctive, cinematic, and technically-advanced music collection. Phuture Memoriez manufactures the fear of death into something intriguing, palpable – and oddly comforting.

JERK IN THE CAN: CITY CENTRE SNOT MONSTER
City Centre Snot Monster – Jerk in the Can Release Date: June 26th, 2017
Track Listing:
1. Barbicide 2. Bowzer's Castle 3. BK Smashed Glass 4. Blue Poison
“Experimental" is an umbrella term that spans everything from futuristic to edgy to weird. I think this leans towards the latter. Self-proclaimed as being experimental noise pop, City Centre Snot Monster is the fourth release of Vancouver-based electronic group, Jerk in the Can. Consisting of Jessica Blaquiere and Marc Blaquiere, the duo has created a distinctive rush of sound that makes you listen twice.
The opening, “Barbicide,” kicks off the album with its focused and sharply-produced style. Starting with a slow-tempoed percussion, spacey sounds drift in to layer one another to create a haunting but smooth texture of sounds. The vocals are operatic, embellished by frosty accents that walk the line between radar-like and microphone feedback.
“Bowzer’s Castle” is a lot more cluttered and jarring. Inspired by one of the tracks in Mario Kart (I hope), it’s cacophonous, impulsive, overwhelming, and fast-paced. The style is disjunct, shifting rhythms and styles mid-beat, much like the various obstacles you would encounter as you make your way through Bowser’s castle.
"BK Smashed Glass” begins with a dense, vibrating bass line interweaved with heavily manipulated vocals. The melody is chilling and disturbing, holding the air rapt with tension that leaves you unguarded. Like the EP’s other tracks, it is interrupted with splashes of unconventional sounds (something along the lines of a motorcycle engine, breaking glass, and a fire alarm).
“Blue Poison” is the most shapeless of the album. There are a lot of moving parts, as if the band unleashed all of their sonic intentions at once. This leaves it with a battered, piercing surface that bleeds of atmospheric deliriousness. It then burns quickly before moving on to the next idea.
The best way I can describe City Centre Snot Monster is “interesting.” For listeners looking for something that defies the mold, this is it.
Note: Jerk in the Can also published music videos for each song that are along the same lines as its vocal counterpart. I would encourage you to watch them because you will be in for a treat.
