desultory: 1) lacking a plan, purpose, or enthusiasm; 2) occurring randomly or occasionally.
600 words of food porn and Aziraphale and Crowley enjoying each other's company under the cut~ 🍋🍰🍷
Preview: Brunch became luncheon became afternoon tea, their familiar ritual of finding excuses to linger.
Between them, the tarte au citron meringué de Menton with thyme gelée and honeycomb crystals disappeared in desultory bites. Aziraphale savored every dainty forkful, his expression melting into bliss each time the airy, whipped peaks kissed golden via brulée torch and rich, tart-sweet filling atop crumbly pie crust touched his palate.
Or so that was what Crowley imagined Aziraphale’s taste buds were experiencing. For him, it was enough that the aroma of citrus and lightly burnt sugar wafting in his direction blended nicely with the notes of his rather excellent sauvignon blanc. If somehow the wine in his glass had miraculously traveled back in time to become the particular vintage served at King Charles II’s table celebrating the end of Cromwell’s reign in 1660, well, the Ritz Carlton sommelier would never have to know. The poor woman was no doubt doing her best with the selections available to her.
A few bites of pie remained on the plate, but Aziraphale seemed to have forgotten them. He was lost in a story, recalling to Crowley the exact sensation of warm afternoon sunshine on his skin and the breeze off the sea in his face as he strolled through the lemon groves along the Côte d'Azur in 1905. Crowley had his own stories from those days, fond memories of the marble-and-gold Casino de Monte Carlo in all its glory. When he closed his eyes and pictured it he could still taste the cigar smoke and avarice in the air, could still hear the rustle of bills being counted and exchanged and the clinking of chips.
But he was content to let Aziraphale talk, to listen to him describe the absolutely exquisite lemon meringue éclair he’d found at the most darling petite boulangerie in Saint-Tropez, and how the dessert today reminded him of those sultry, languid summer days on the coast.
Crowley, too, remembered them fondly, and let Aziraphale’s vivid recollection tempt him into sniping the last bit of pie from the plate and popping the forkful between his lips. He couldn’t help grinning as he chewed, far too pleased with himself.
When Aziraphale’s reverie for the Riviera at turn of the last century gave way to the positively scandalized indignation Crowley expected from him, Crowley simply signaled for the waiter.
“Another tarte au citron meringué de Menton, please.” He gave the dessert’s name in melodic, flawless French. Just because he could. Then with a sleight of hand that would have made even lauded Professor Hoffman proud, he miracled their wine glasses full again without a single human noticing.
Having taken an indulgent sip of his newly refreshed Haut-Brion circa The English Restoration, Crowley settled more comfortably into his plush dining chair. Seated on the same side of the round table, it was easy to lean his long-limbed body into Aziraphale’s space with the feigned grace of casual movement.
”We’re not in any hurry, after all, are we, angel?”
"You wily old serpent.” As he said it, Aziraphale’s lips quirked up in that mischievous grin that suited him so well. He clinked their glasses together, and they drank.
To afternoons at the Ritz that would never end.

BLOGTOBER 10/16/2020 pt 2: HOUSE OF WAX (2005)
I like this movie even more than I originally thought I did, although we shall see if I can justify this strange affection. When I first saw 2005's nominal remake of the 1953 HOUSE OF WAX, I experienced something that I object to in concept: guilty pleasure. I did not want to find myself seduced by one of these teen-targeting modern updates of canonical chillers of 50s and 60s, like THE HAUNTING and HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL in 1999 and 13 GHOSTS in 2001. Indeed, the 2005 HOW is most commonly thought of as "the one with Paris Hilton?"--a thought that is hard to avoid, what with the movie’s mindless running gag about her then-recent sex tape. But, to my surprise, the very natural-acting It Girl of the 00s is not the worst thing about the movie, and moreover, there's a lot to like about the whole production.
Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, now slated to direct DCU's forthcoming Black Adam movie (though I like him for ORPHAN), and written by former Doublemint twins (yes, really--and this fact will really become relevant) Chad and Carey Hayes, this HOUSE OF WAX is gory, loud, convoluted, and actually very likeable. A caravan of horny kids take a deadly detour down a bayou backroad that strands them in a seemingly abandoned town made up of eerie art deco buildings. Among them is the House of Wax, a wax museum in which literally every single thing is cast in wax--and so are all of its neighbors. Our heroes are trapped in this scenario with sinister mechanic Bo and disfigured maniac Vincent (*eye roll emoji*), whose means and motivation for turning an entire town into wax dummies are unclear, but you have to admit that they did a great job.
Unsurprisingly, HOUSE OF WAX is first and foremost an FX picture, and it fulfills that purpose with aplomb. One finds incredible commitment in the set design, which upholds its obligation to appear as a massive waxwork; even blunt objects like piano keys or marble tiles have that milky, semi-translucent appearance that leaves a visceral impression of their artificiality. The set may not count as a special effect exactly, but it is extremely special; its expressionistic flair filled me with the hope that it was a place I could visit, and I was inevitably disappointed to discover that it was a temporary construction in Australia’s Gold Coast, long since demolished. The violence is the main event, of course, and HOUSE hosts an exciting array of gory gags that I have rarely seen elsewhere, and that are better seen than described.
Lest anyone think of violence as a limited form of emotional exploitation, one of the things I like most about this remake is its use of horrific injuries to do something unusual in mainstream film. A character who has to wrench a crossbow bolt from his sternum vomits from the shock of it, conveying a physical reality that I can only immediately relate to Dan Hedaya getting smacked in the balls with a baseball bat in BLOOD SIMPLE. The main character survives the film with a severed finger, which is highly unusual; your average Hollywood production needs to restore order at the end of the story, and won't risk bumming out the audience with the thought of living with a permanent disfigurement. The few examples that come to mind are not necessarily mainstream visions, including DELIVERANCE and FROM BEYOND, in which disfigurement is used to communicate a grim ending for a trespassing character for whom there is no salvation. HOUSE OF WAX has no such philosophical pretentions, but its evocations of visceral revolt and permanent damage add an interesting touch of realism to an otherwise extremely cartoony movie.
Paris Hilton really is perfectly good here, although I suspect that one reason I like her is that I find her so relaxing to watch. One of Hilton’s signature characteristics, often interpreted as pure bimboism, is that she absolutely does not let anything get to her, ever--besides being terrorized by psychotic craftsmen, of course--a quality that she does not share with other celebrity “trainwrecks” of her general description.
We don't find this realism in the narrative component of HOW, which is loaded with extraneous and unresolved teen drama. However, the movie does do something that the superior original does not: It adds subtext. The Vincent Price version offers glimpses of class conflict, in which various characters struggle against poverty in their own way--whether it's through insurance fraud, exploitative art, or interpersonal gold digging--but it doesn't amount to much, prioritizing the pure terror of the situation. The 2005 remake actually engages directly with the idea of the uncanny duplicate. It is one of those unusual, often uncomfortable movies in which the main "couple" are siblings. Elisha Cuthbert plays the responsible twin sister of Chad Michael Murray, who has grown into a sullen juvenile delinquent due to their parents' clear preference for their daughter. Meanwhile, we discover that Bo and Vincent (Brian Van Holt for both) were conjoined twins whose mad scientist father performed a controversial separation, leaving one of them deformed; in an early scene from their horrific childhood, we find that their deranged parents also preferred the more controlled twin over his insane sibling. The parents were in the business of creating artificial impressions of life: the father a disgraced surgeon, the mother a maker of wax masks. All of these narratives describe the neurotic human urge to curate appearances, to synthesize normality or idealism through behavior, art, and medical intervention. Even Chad Michael Murray turns out to be a synthesis of his parents' idea of him, his JD façade forming a protective shell around an essentially good kid who has taken the fall for his slacker friends. One can only imagine how relevant this story is to its twin screenwriters; only in the most general conceptual sense, one hopes.
Don’t get me wrong: HOUSE OF WAX is definitely not brainfood. Most of its characters are little more than crash test dummies, its big reveal is hard to understand, and as with most remakes of vintage classics, its main reason for being is outrageous sadism and dazzling visual effects. And there’s nothing wrong with that. I'm not trying to tell you that HOUSE OF WAX is especially deep--or even that it makes very much sense--I do want to insist that it makes a noble attempt to address an interesting idea, which is more than many audiences have given it credit for.

Written for Klaroline Valentine's Day Bingo 2020 @kcvalentinesbingo
Prompt: “A dare is a dare.”
Author’s note: This is the much-requested sequel to Chapter 63: Drowning Secrets in the Sea, found in my Klaroline series, A Beautiful Symmetry.
Warning: Casual references to drugs
Please review here.
“This is your idea of an adventure?”
Caroline whipped her head around, mouth curving up into a pleased grin as she took in Klaus’ rumpled appearance. “Your university’s still skimping on the travel budget, huh? You know, just because they pay for coach doesn’t mean you have to fly it.”
“Not all of us can afford first class, sweetheart,” Klaus replied, pulling Caroline to her feet and playfully spinning her around the cramped basement.
She kissed one of his dimpled cheeks, suddenly giddy and hopeful. He was here. She honestly hadn’t known what to expect when she sent him the artifacts and GPS coordinates. “Seriously? Just because I fly first class, doesn’t mean I actually pay for it.” At his amused chuckle, she allowed herself to press into him, his warmth and familiar scent washing over her. She’d missed him more than she’d cared to admit. It only had been a couple of weeks since he’d let her walk away, angry and hurt by what she’d done.
“Are you still mad at me,” she asked tentatively, stepping away to give herself a bit of space for this conversation.
He hesitated, running his fingers through his disheveled curls a few times before he finally spoke. “You pretended to be an archeologist to gain access to priceless artifacts that my father commissioned you to steal. You could’ve ruined my academic career — everything I’ve ever worked for.”
She bowed her head, her heart sinking in her chest. Did he come all this way just to tell her off?
“But then you also didn’t go through with it and came back to save my life,” he continued, his tone a bit shaky. “I’ve missed you every moment since you left,” he confessed, standing in front of her once more, his touch tender as he caressed her cheek. “And I’m tired of missing you, love.”
Their kiss was nothing like their first one — while that night in the bar had been hesitant, now their kiss was frantic; fueled by the past deception and a tentative promise of forgiveness. He tasted like her future. And Caroline had no intention of walking away from it twice. “I missed you too,” she admitted, placing kisses along his jawline.
It was when he started to untie the silken knot at her waist that she snapped back to reality. With a sigh of regret, she gently pushed away, telling him, “We’ll need to pick this up later — a business associate is meeting me here in a minute.”
Klaus looked skeptically around the dusty room, asking, “What sort of business meeting could you have down here?”
“The private kind.” She considered him carefully, bending down to scoop up a few dusty books and folders to shove into his arms. “So, I don’t want you to freak out, but we’re meeting a kind of go-between for a gunrunnermobbossguy — but don’t worry! He’s totally safe and I’ve worked with him before.” She winced as she saw his gray eyes grow wide with alarm despite the fact that she’d hoped her rapid-fire words wouldn’t really register.
“Did you just say we’re meeting with a ‘gunrunner mob boss’? Bloody hell, Caroline!”
She rolled her eyes, checking her watch as she corrected him. “He’s a go-between. He’s not actually a gunrunner mob boss. He just works for one.”
“How is that any better? And how are you going to explain me? What’s my cover?”
Caroline snorted. Klaus was adorable when he panicked. “Calm down, James Bond. You’re playing the role of a nervous archaeologist completely out of his depth. Something tells me you’ll pull that off beautifully.” At his grumpy expression, she impulsively poked one of his dimples, telling, him, “Where’s your adventurous spirit? You know you want to embrace it — otherwise you wouldn’t be here.”
“I’d thought we’d start with dinner,” he mumbled, a hint of a smile starting to appear the longer he looked at her.
“Perhaps you can postpone your plans a bit, mate? We’re on a bit of a deadline,” interrupted a cocky voice as heavy footsteps finished descending the stairs into the basement.
Caroline instantly went into her work persona, adapting her stance and demeanor to best put Galen at ease. “Galen Vaughn, you slimy bastard, the next time you let me borrow a grappling hook, make sure you didn’t break off one of the ends on Kangchenjunga Peak.”
His blue eyes crinkled with mirth, cuffing her on the shoulder as he said jovially, “You managed a’right, didn’t you, lass? If memory serves, you repaid me in kind when you sold me out to the Germans.”
“Looks like it worked out alright for you — considering you’re now their go-between.” Sharpening her tone slightly, she decided to move the meeting along. “Tell me the specs and deadline.”
“Two spear points about 12 centimeters each. Day after next.” He nodded toward Klaus. “Who’s this?”
Caroline kept her tone light as she explained, “This is Klaus, my expert. He’ll authenticate on-site.”
As though to make up for her non-committal introduction, Klaus sprang forward, shaking Galen’s hand a bit too enthusiastically. “I’m an archaeologist. I can identify artifacts from 3000 BC to AD 500. While my main expertise in in classical antiquity, I have completed extensive fieldwork in Bronze and Iron Age dig sites. In fact, I lectured extensively on the evolution of the battle ax and advanced smelting techniques. It actually was quite fascinating how groundbreaking their metalsmiths were...” he trailed off, somewhat self-conscious when he noted Caroline’s indulgent smile. “Anyway...I uh, like...old things.”
Did Klaus purposely make his accent deeper because Galen has a Scottish accent? “Right. As you can see, we’ve got this,” she told Galen dryly.
“I’m impressed you’d take such an eager partner,” Galen replied skeptically, “he seems quite green, lass.”
Since it looked like Klaus was squaring off to punch a friend of one of the most dangerous mobs in Eastern Europe, Caroline hastily shook Galen’s hand, sealing their deal. “Day after next,” she told him solemnly. He left with little more than a curt nod, his jovial demeanor instantly replaced by a more disquieting nature. Such was the way of this business.
“Bollocks. Between the dodgy codes and the wanker with the pretentious facial hair, I’m a bit lost as to our mission, sweetheart.”
She cheerfully answered, “It’s no big deal — we just need to infiltrate a party tonight and steal some Bronze Age artifacts so we can sell them to this gunrunner mob boss I know.” At his incredulous expression, she winked and added, “And you have stubble too.”
“Clearly mine’s better.”
Caroline softened her tone, noting the wariness in Klaus’ gray eyes. “If you want out, I get it. No hard feelings, ok?”
“It’s not that; I’d just like to know what I’m getting into.” His gaze was penetrating, as though searching for something. “Why put yourself in danger? There’s a larger gain than just riches, isn’t there?”
She crossed her arms, not comfortable giving so much of herself away. But she needed to learn. “Mikael took my mother off the donor’s list so that I’d work for him. When I killed him, I lost my one chance to get her name restored. My only option is a black-market kidney and this job will get me the cash I need to make that happen.”
The kiss he gave her was electric; it burned her all the way to her toes and she arched into him, a tiny little moan escaping. “Does this mean you’re in?”
That devilish smirk of his was all the answer she needed.
_________________________________
The estate was stubbornly built on the marshes along the coast of the Baltic Sea, proving that even the immensely wealthy could be ignorant dipshits. Caroline critically eyed the tall rooftops of the main house and its surrounding buildings, the crooked lines wordlessly demonstrating that everything was slowly sinking, eventually to be reclaimed by the sea. She could feel Klaus tensing beside her, and she patted his arm affectionately. “Relax — the doorman is barely coherent after his wild night at the Hunter’s Mark. He’s barely going to glance at our invitation, and even if he did, it’s been expertly forged.” She gave him a sly wink, adding, “By me.”
“How do you know what he was up to last night,” he whispered back, eyes darting around the ornate courtyard of marble statues.
“Because I paid off his dealer to ensure he never ran out,” she answered matter-of-factly, favoring the pale, sweaty doorman with a sunny smile as she handed over the ivory parchment invitation she’d painstakingly threaded with gold along the borders to match the genuine ones. As she suspected, they were waived inside with barely a glance, and she smugly handed Klaus a champagne flute.
“Impressive,” he murmured, casting curious glances around the immense ballroom with its 10-piece orchestra quietly playing chamber music.
“Yeah, they’re pretty impressive. The Martins have been running drugs out of Kiel for decades; their territory is perfectly situated to take advantage of the port. They launder much of their profits with a string of online boutiques set up by the younger siblings, Greta and Luka,” she murmured, snatching a smoked salmon canape from a silver serving tray.
Klaus seemed to slowly relax as he acclimated to his surroundings, a bemused look on his face as he eyed the cascading fountain of champagne flowing from a beautifully crafted ice sculpture in the center of the room. “I meant you were impressive, sweetheart. You’re brilliant, remarkably talented, and adventurous — enviable qualities the rest of the world only dreams of possessing.” He leaned in, his accented voice low and sexy as he added, “Not to mention your ethereal, utterly enchanting beauty.”
There went her heart doing that fluttery thing again. He already was wearing the hell out of that Tom Ford tuxedo, but then to have him whisper those things — things that maybe she’d heard before but no one ever really meant — made her want to shove him into that gold leaf and pearl-tiered cake and lick the buttercream off.
As though pleased she was rendered momentarily speechless, Klaus suddenly gripped her waist, spinning her onto the polished marble floor. His touch was commanding, but not forceful, which she appreciated. Almost as much as his smooth muscles underneath her touch. The red satin of her dress wound its way between them as Klaus performed surprisingly intricate footwork.
At her small gasp of surprise, Klaus flashed her a dimpled smirk. “I may have a few moves.”
“Nice moves,” she said, a bit breathless as he led her through a reverse spin that had her momentarily crowded against his chest. She couldn’t help but rest her palm against his chest. Firm, but it was more than that — he felt like a steady person. Someone she could trust. “Mystic Falls, Virginia.” At his questioning brow, she explained, “It’s where I’m from. Well, we bounced around a lot of big cities when I was a kid, but that’s where we finally stayed.” She hesitated, unsure of how he’d react. It was a big step — and one she’d never taken before. “My mom still lives there...maybe, um, you’d like to meet her?”
At Klaus’ stunned silence, she hurriedly backtracked, telling him, “No, I get it — it’s probably way too soon for that. I’vejustneverbeenlikethiswithanyone and I’m not sure what the steps are. But I can figure it out. Seriously, I can be good at steps. All the steps. Probably. It’s just that I need to head back there for a bit once we get our business here settled and her kidney secured and I know it’s a lot to ask —”
“I’d be honored,” he quickly answered, kissing her soundly. “And it’s certainly not a chore to get to know you better, love,” he admonished when he broke the kiss, dipping her until she giggled with relief.
Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed a slight commotion as the aerial silk acrobats had arrived and were starting to set up in the main courtyard. Perfect. “Follow me,” she whispered in his ear, casually leading him down a narrow corridor full of priceless artwork resplendent with inlaid lapis lazuli and hammered silver frames. “While most of the guests are distracted, we need to get what we came for — two Bronze Age spear points.”
They stopped in front of a tall glass case, admiring the artifacts perched on a carved ebony pedestal. “They were unearthed in the muddy riverbed of the Tollense Valley. It’s a unique find for the region, marking a significant battle around 3200 years ago. Archaeometallurgical studies have pinpointed the geological origin of the metals’ composition, which means you can trace the route these spear points took to get to the valley.”
“Except determining the geological origin of the metals isn’t infallible when you take into consideration the various ore ingots used along trade routes as currency. So, your premise, while admirable, is flawed.”
“My premise is flawed?! Are you seriously discounting all of the cutting-edge work Drs. Maxfield and Branson published in the American Journal of Archaeology? Or the Nordic Bronze Age metallurgy expertise of Dr. Hildegard,” Caroline hissed, feeling her temper rise. She’d just started to recite the latest research statistics on copper-based metals across Bronze Age Europe when she noticed the tips of his ears growing red. Suddenly, she burst into giggles at the ridiculousness of the situation.
Klaus’ confusion gave way to amusement as he too started chuckling. “We’re never going to agree, are we?”
“Nope. But where’s the fun in that,” she asked, leaning over to kiss him soundly on the lips. She broke off the kiss with a twinkle in her eye, sticking out her leg to take advantage of the deep slit in her dress in order to access her lock pick kit. She deftly worked at the enormous mechanism lock behind the glass case, rolling her eyes at the Martins’ foolish assumption that bigger was better when it came to security.
The interlocking tumblers easily gave way, and as she carefully opened the glass door, Klaus murmured, “You make burglary sexier than it has any right to be, sweetheart.”
“Sweet talker,” Caroline replied fondly, delicately sliding the spear points into the leather strap across her thigh. “If you’re lucky, I might let you help me remove these later. Artifacts require such a gentle touch, you know.”
From that lustful gleam, it seemed he was ready to take her up on her offer sooner rather than later, but unfortunately, they had company. From the heavy black eyeliner and holdover grunge ensembles, she knew exactly who had found them. “Shit. It’s the Travelers.” She quickly pulled Klaus up a narrow staircase, explaining, “So, maybethere’s also this cult of crazy fanatics who are interested in the spear points. They’re convinced some ancient ancestor was a powerful witch who disturbed the natural balance and was cast out of her community.”
With a troubled sigh that turned into a choked laugh, he pulled loose his bowtie as they hid out on a balcony, staring down at the courtyard very far below. “And what does that nonsense have to do with our artifacts?”
He said ‘our’. It inexplicably filled her with warmth and she again had to tamp down those lusty thoughts. Action now — then some real action later. “It’s kind of hard to follow and has more embarrassing plot holes than a CW show, but supposedly there was a curse that had something to do with doppelgangers, massive earthquakes and possibly a boat anchor and they think these artifacts will somehow break the curse.”
He scoffed, but whatever skeptical diatribe he was about to begin was stopped short when there was a loud banging on the double doors to the room where they’d been hiding. Glancing over the balcony once more, he wryly asked, “Does your skillset include flying?”
Following his line of sight, she spied some of the aerial silks the acrobats had hung for their performance. As the edges of the jewel-toned fabrics fluttered near the balcony, she asked, “Are you daring me to jump out this window and slide down a curtain?”
Wincing a bit at the sound of wood starting to splinter from the psycho cult just outside, he told her, “Perhaps I found my adventurous spirit.”
“Fine. But we’re jumping together.”
Klaus smirked, grabbing her by the waist as they each clutched the sturdy fabric. “I suppose a dare is a dare.”

Whether, like Plumber Manor in Dorset, they’ve been owned by the same family for hundreds of years or are a cherished new project such as Caer Beris in Wales, manor hotels have a family at their hearts. Packed with history, these hotels pride themselves on delightfully old-fashioned hospitality with generous meals, antique furniture, gardens to wander in and countryside to admire. It has a 14th Century ivy-clad manor house – in the same honey-coloured stone to match – filled with stained-glass windows, beams and a Michelin-starred restaurant. There are 21 rooms, including the delightful Lordsmeer suite in the main house and 29 cottages around the grounds, some of which are dog-friendly. Titchwell Manor, Norfolk A hotel that catches the posh but gently boho North Norfolk vibe beautifully; this Victorian building is too close to the beach to have any airs and graces, but there’s a lot of breezy charm. Meals are served in an expansive conservatory and there are 26 rooms, some with hot tubs. Owned by the Snaith family, it is managed by their son Eric, who also runs Norfolk’s smartest fish and chip shop in nearby Thornham. Family-friendly, it’s also a stylish bolthole for birdwatchers; there’s an RSPB reserve next door. B&B from £140. The 30 rooms and suites are cream and serene, generously sized and with French-accented luxury. For extra privacy, there’s a two-bedroom cottage in the grounds, alongside tennis courts and a spa. The hotel also has its own yacht. Longueville became a hotel in 1949 and is now in the third generation of family ownership. There are just 13 bedrooms, some in the beamed eaves of the building, all with the sort of views that will have you pulling on your walking boots. Guests eat in the dining room rather than a restaurant and the food aims to make the flavours sing with minimal fuss. The menus are set-price and a bargain at three courses for £30. Caer Beris Manor, Powys The Southwick family bought Caer Beris Manor in Powys last year and spent lockdown continuing their renovation programme Lord Swansea built this mock-Tudor mansion, surrounded on three sides by the River Irfon, in 1896 on the foundations of a 13th Century castle. It was bought by the Southwick family last year. There are 22 rooms spread across the estate, ranging from suites to single rooms. The family spent lockdown continuing their renovation programme and have created picnic areas throughout the grounds, which also hold orchards and an otter hide, while there’s trout, salmon and grayling to fish for. Manor House, Argyll and Bute Manor House, Argyll and Bute, is ‘delightfully gentle’ with just 11 rooms and spectacular West Coast views The Scots don’t do manors in quite the same way as the English – fortified castles were more their thing. This hotel is one of the exceptions, and it’s delightfully gentle with just 11 rooms and spectacular West Coast views. It was built for the Duke of Argyll in 1780, next to Oban’s harbour. Staying here is a superb introduction to the Inner Hebrides, from the freshly caught seafood in the restaurant to sunset views from McCaig’s Tower behind the hotel – although watching from the Nelson bar at the hotel with a fine whisky in hand is nearly as good. Sailors can use the hotel’s own mooring. Double B&B from £224 (manorhouseoban.com). The Manor at Sway, Hampshire Pictured is one of the bedrooms at The Manor at Sway, Hampshire, where ‘William Morris mixes with a touch of modern design’ All the space and grace that the Edwardians could muster comes into play at this hotel on the southern edge of the New Forest, where William Morris mixes with a touch of modern design. It’s a great car-free option as it’s near the railway station and there are wonderful walks into the forest and heath to explore from the hotel. There are just 11 bedrooms and a restaurant serving local produce. Doubles from £189, including dinner, breakfast and afternoon tea (themanoratsway.com). Moonfleet Manor, Dorset Room with a view: Moonfleet Manor, a Georgian mansion in Dorset, overlooks the magnificent Chesil Beach Not just for adults: One of the lounges at the hotel, which is child-focused, with play areas and picnics If you want to get your child manored up, head here. There are interconnecting rooms, indoor and outdoor play areas, including a pool, and in a Covid-made-fun way, picnics are available for every meal including breakfast. The South West Coastal Path runs alongside the back garden. In the Georgian mansion, there’s a playfulness that adults will appreciate too, with high teas and grown-up meals and, above all, Snoopy, the venerable hotel spaniel. Two nights from £329, including breakfast and dinner for two. Children stay free but are charged for meals; two hours of childcare a day is included from September 7 when the creche reopens (moonfleetmanorhotel.co.uk). Long Crendon Manor, Buckinghamshire Long Crendon Manor in Buckinghamshire has bedrooms with original features, a bakery, farm shop and florist Not a hotel as such, but you can stay in this manor, which is stacked with beamed charm. Parts of the main house date from the 12th Century. It’s still a working estate, with ducks and geese in the orchard that creates the cider, and Gloucester Old Spot pigs that provide the morning bacon. Head into the courtyard and there’s a bakery, farm shop and florist. The farm shop cafe serves lunch and it’s walking distance from two pubs in the village. B&B doubles from £145 (longcrendonmanor.co.uk). Rothay Manor, Cumbria This small foodie hotel in the heart of the Lake District is owned by Jamie and Jenna Shail, who have bought significant flair and rolltop baths to the low-slung white house near Ambleside. Marjorie Winifred Kendall Bird
(September 3, 1898 - July 22, 1961)
Socialite. Marjorie known as Winnie, was born in a shack along the railroad tracks in Missouri. Her father worked for the railroad. Not wanting any part of that life, she packed a suitcase and headed for New York in 1917. Florenz Ziegfeld spotted her on the street and put her in his show. Wallis sent her a dozen red roses after seeing her on stage, but she was not taken by him, as he was five inches shorter than she. Winnie had hopes of making it on the silver screen one day. Winnie met Wallis Bird, They eventually married and moved to Farnsworth where the parties they hosted became legendary. Wallis made good on his promise and began making professional-scale movies of the lavish entertainments they held at their 60-foot pool. At another event, a troupe of circus horses performed on the front lawn. It may not have been Hollywood, but Winnie was the star of all their homemade films. Bird kept a stable of 40 horses, but his real passion was his 20-car garage filled with the most expensive cars money could buy. Gleaming behind each bay was a Hispano-Suiza, several custom-painted Rolls-Royces, a Bugatti, Stutz Bearcats, Bentleys and an Alfa Romeo, all tended to by a staff of mechanics. Winnie busied herself with collecting fabulous gowns from Paris and buying jewels. She wore diamonds to the beach and in the pool. At some point she landed on the best-dressed lists and was often featured in Vogue magazine. She once showed up at a neighbor’s fancy tea party dressed from head to toe in a bubble gum pink dress with matching hat, shoes, gloves and hair dyed to match. The Birds’ every move and activity was recorded on film of which Wallis would have weekly screenings in the ballroom for his friends. Years later, the two giant Movieola film projectors stood rusting away in the glassed-in solarium next to the ballroom. Miles of black and white 35 millimeter movie film had been torn from their metal canisters by vandals where it now snaked all over the house and zigzagged from room to room like a jumble of streamers on New Year’s Eve. You could hold strips of film up to the light and make out the images that captured life on the Gold Coast during its heyday. There was Winifred smiling in a flapper dress as she danced around the marble fountain or posed elegantly on the satin divan holding a glass of champagne. There were shots of the happy couple prancing about in an open field on horseback. Another reel showed Wallis Bird driving around the courtyard in one of his shiny new cars, seeming very proud to show it off in front of the servants. Several frames down showed Bird at an airport, most likely Roosevelt Field, where he was climbing into a small plane that would end their fairy tale life. On June 5, 1940, Bird was flying his private plane up to the Catskills for some peace and quiet. As he was cruising over the Hudson River, a violent storm erupted and the plane was hit by lightning and crashed not far from the water’s edge. His mangled body was found the next day. Devastated, his widow ordered the broken pieces of the plane collected, placed in crates and stored in the basement of Farnsworth. Winnie was never the same. Unable to deal with her husband’s sudden death, she spent the next several years at Doctors Hospital in New York and all but abandoned the house in Oyster Bay with everything in it. Despite the fragile state of her mind, she retained control over the vast fortune she inherited and though living in a hospital, she was free to come and go as she pleased. As the years passed, Winnie began to take on a kind of a Norma Desmond (Sunset Boulevard) persona and wore fur and ostrich-trimmed negligees during the day, then slipped out at night with her diamonds and gowns and headed for the Stork Club and El Morocco. As a rich widow, Winnie was never without her circle of handsome escorts. On one of Winifred’s many trips to Paris to have more gowns made for her, she met a man who claimed to be a prince. Prince Nicolas Sturdza, who designed dresses and hats, spoke seven languages and was a taller version of her late husband. The prince was fascinated by the $1 million necklace she was wearing, with the 10 huge emeralds that had originally belonged to King Ludwig of Bavaria. Over cocktails one night, Sturdza began to weave tall tales. He intrigued Winnie with a dramatic account about how he had just escaped from Communist Romania after spending three years hiding in a mountain cave, where government police had put a price on his head. He claimed his mother was starving in prison and his father had been shot trying to escape. Winnie was so taken by his story that without checking to see if it was true, she gave him $50,000 so he could try and save his family. A short time later, she cooed to the press, “I’m in love with a prince. He makes me feel 20 again.” He was 16 years younger than she was and when friends tried to warn her that he was not what he seemed, Winnie snapped, “He is not a gigolo like so many phony princes who target vulnerable rich women, like that poor fool Barbara Hutton.” Despite the warning signs, they became engaged and Winnie made plans to restore the long abandoned villa in Oyster Bay. They began to travel all over Europe buying expensive things for the house, staying in the best hotels – with her footing all the bills. Sturdza had promised to introduce her to the European royalty but never got around to it, nor did she leave him when it got back to her that he kept a string of young boys on hand wherever they traveled. But as time passed she was beginning to tire of him. Things took a dark turn when Sturdza realized he was about to lose his meal ticket and brought in an old psychiatrist friend, Dr. Gerard Savoy. Savoy had been in trouble with the law and his license had been suspended. Within a short time, Winnie was under the complete control of Sturdza and Savoy and was being forced to take as many as 100 pills a day. While she was in a fugue state, Sturdza would take Winnie shopping to the most expensive shops in Europe where he would manipulate her into spending $20,000 to $60,000 on jewelry. The gems were brought back to the hotel and stored in a vault. Records show that even in a drugged state, Winnie knew she was in trouble and cabled her attorney in New York claiming that she feared her life was in danger. Her pleas for help were ignored. In July 1961, Winifred’s lawyer received a cable stating that she had died during the night at the Beau Rivage Hotel in Lausanne. Dr. Savoy listed the cause of death as cerebral hemorrhage. Her millions in jewels vanished without a trace. The lawyer, suspicious, flew to Lausanne and informed the police about Winnie’s calls for help. Her funeral had already taken place and after much wrangling and paperwork, her body was exhumed and an autopsy showed she had been poisoned with a massive dose of morphine. The murder trial created a sensation on both continents. Sturdza, who as it turned out was not a prince, and Dr. Savoy, who was no longer a doctor, were both convicted of murder and sent to prison for life. Most of Winifred Bird’s jewels were never found.
Marjorie Winifred Kendall Bird is entombed with her husband and his family in the Bird Mausoleum at Hillside Cemetery, Cortlandt Manor, Westchester County, New York.

Whether you rent or own your home, chances are the thought of a full-scale bathroom renovation is more than a little daunting. Have no fear, you can elevate the look and feel of the space with only a few minor, but key bathroom accessories – tiles, fixtures and iron-clad leases be damned. Here’s how:

Especially if painting isn’t an option, the perfect shower curtain can easily shift the light and tone of the room. The Marfa Sky curtain by Quiet Town does just that. The quilted design pulls inspiration from Josef Albers’ abstract works, featuring interactions of earthy canvas, cool sky blues and grays, and soft peach – a modern representation of the prairies it’s named after.
An Artfully Undetectable Bin

For decades, Villa Egerton (villa egerton.com) was the toast of the French Riviera. Owned by the English Chancellor Reginald McKenna, the belle epoque mansion on the coast of Roquebrune-Cap-Martin hosted fabulous fetes reportedly attended by the likes of Coco Chanel, Greta Garbo, Ernest Hemingway, and F. Scott Fitzgerald. Of course, all parties must eventually come to an end, and by the turn of the 21st century, the property—which at that point had changed hands multiple times—was in desperate need of a makeover. Last January, after completing a nearly five-year renovation, the storied Xanadu returned to the Côte d’Azur scene in peak condition. The restoration of the 91,000-square-foot estate retained many of its original features, including the parquet floors and marble fireplaces in the main villa. Upon entering the seven-bedroom residence, guests descend a grand marble staircase that leads to an elegant salon (furnished with 19th-century antiques and a grand piano) and an adjacent Moroccan-inspired solarium (offering panoramic views of the coastline). The master suite is a lavish retreat in its own right, featuring a private hammam and gold-leaf ceilings applied by the Italian fresco specialists Mariani Affreschi. In keeping with its past, Villa Egerton remains a pleasure palace perfect for entertaining, with a herringbone-brick wine cellar, a speakeasy-style bar, and an outdoor dining area that seats as many as 30. Guests can recover from the festivities at a nearly 50-foot-long swimming pool lined with lemon trees and rosemary bushes and overlooking Monte Carlo and the Bay of Monaco (at Roquebrune-Cap-Martin) https://www.instagram.com/p/B1p_zlxIIA_/?igshid=svj1wbnv059
