Whumptober Day 1 - Panic Attacks
Started off the month with a fanfic since I was getting back into the world of Vampire Academy, we'll see if I return to this universe by the end of the month. No. 1: RACE AGAINST THE CLOCK Search Party | Panic Attack | “If only we could hold on.” (Icysami x Renegaderr, Strangers.)
~~~
Sometimes she dreamed she was underwater. Deep down, so far below the surface that light was but a gauzy, weak veil. She didn’t need to breathe in a dream, but she still felt the weight of so much water. Surrounding her, weighing her down, pinning her in place like the infinitesimal waste of space she felt like in waking hours.
But it was waking hours, at least for her kind. There was light, crisp and bright, and she was simply in the bathroom at a gala hall. The tap wasn’t even on so there was certainly no water.
But she still couldn’t breathe. Why couldn’t she breathe?
Jill watched herself in the mirror, red faced and shiny eyed. Not a curl was out of place, and even five seconds from tears as she was her makeup had remained immaculate all evening. If only she could stop the trembling, erase the haunted expression ruining all that hard work making her presentable. She had to go back before people started whispering more.
She had to pull it together.
She had to--
Something groaned under the polished marble of the sink, and she forced the death grip on its sides to release. She retreated to one of the stalls instead, shutting the door and curling in on herself as she tried not to cry. It wasn’t the first party she’d been made to attend since returning to court. It was leaps and bounds safer, even, since Li-- the queen had gotten the law repealed. She had endured all the dirty looks and cruel whispers out of necessity, because surely now that was the worst that would be done. Eddie had sworn it. She should be fine.
But then Eddie wasn’t here anymore, was he?
Not Eddie. Not Trey. Not Sydney, or Adrian, or even Angeline of all people. They were all gone and happy an thriving and she--
The door to the bathroom opened. Finally managing to suck in a breath that felt like ground glass in her lungs, Jill listened to footsteps as someone went around the bathroom. The stalls had longer doors offering more privacy, so all she could see was a shadow through the crack. Still, there were two distinct pauses.
One where the steps were loudest, right outside of her stall.
Her heart pounded so hard she could feel it everywhere. From the black spots dancing in her eyes to the crescents forming where her nails bit into her palms to the burning hollow in her throat.
The steps receded, and before she could release the long fought for breath a new set took their place. Lighter, more delicate with sharper impact. Thinner, taller stilettos as opposed to the standard high heels.
“Is… everything all right in there?”
Oh, now she had to get over herself. First she’d been an anxious wreck, then she damaged the water pipes. Now she’d been absent so long the Queen herself had come to get her.
Someone must have said something.
Hell, everyone did. They noticed she didn’t belong, of course they’d gossip openly in her absence. It was lose-lose. She’d embarrass the Dragomirs whether or not she showed her face.
She ought to just fake a smile and go back out. It shouldn’t have been on Vasilisa to collect her like a child throwing a tantrum. Jill just had to relax-- to breathe-- to-to say something.
She opened her mouth.
Silence.
Vasilisa shifted her weight. Jill could just see her pretty, perfect face. The annoyance, the disappointment. The disgust with her, with their father, that she had to call someone like her a sister at all.
Something dropped onto her shaky hands, wet and warm.
“Jill? Do you need a--”
The damn burst, an eruption of pain in her chest sharp as a gunshot, and Princess Jillian Mastrano-Dragomir was reduced to a sobbing, heaving mess. She tried so hard to apologize, to beg Lissa to leave her alone and go back to the party, to do anything but weep and wail.
If anything was said under her tears she couldn’t tell. He stall door rattled until it was forced open--by Rose, of course it was Rose. Why wouldn’t it be, if Lissa had to see her reduced to this she may as well.
They both tried to get her out of the stall to get a closer look, see if she was injured or something, but she couldn’t do more than listlessly follow where she was pulled. She just had to be so weak and useless in front of the sister who didn’t want her and the person who’d insisted she could handle the weight placed on her shoulders.
She wanted to go home--no, not even. She wanted to go back to Palm Springs and Amberwood. To actually being a nobody, to the family that had chosen her, to the only time since being dragged into this new life when she’d almost felt happy.
Lissa said something to Rose, and after a moment of hesitation the Guardian stepped away and left the room. Stroking Jill’s hair, Lissa spoke again, and this time it managed to get through. “It’s okay, it’s gonna be okay Jill. Just breathe…”
Warmth settled over her in a fog and she managed a deep breath before registering and shoving at her. “Don’t- Don’t do that!”
Lissa balked, and held up her hands defensively. “I was just trying to help--”
“Stop it! I know what you were doing!” She shook off the spirit laced comfort and tried to push to her feet, swaying. “You don’t need to compel me, I get it. Just go back out and I’ll fix it, I swear.”
The Queen rose gracefully, almost like she was floating. The white swan to Jill’s ugly duckling. If only she didn’t look so concerned. “You don’t have to fix anything. Rose is grabbing our stuff and letting the Guardians know so we can leave.”
“No, no! I’m sorry, I promise I can stop, or- or I can go. I didn’t mean to--” The room was spinning. Jill tried to swipe under her eyes, but she was still crying and only succeeded in smearing makeup the tears had yet to touch.
Lissa produced a tissue and stepped forward, gently moving Jill’s hands and patting at her face. “It’s fine, I wouldn’t have asked you to come if I knew you were upset.” Jill laughed bitterly, head hanging in Lissa’s grasp. “How would you know? You never ask.”
Stupid. What a stupid thing to say. Her eyes flew open as Lissa’s hands stilled. “I didn’t mean-- I --”
“No, I’m sorry.” Her voice was low, as were her own eyes as they traced the red marks in Jill’s palms. “We--I. I keep trying to put it off, like it’ll be easier later or you and I will magically get on without discussing what there is between us. It’s been unfair to you to ignore everything, especially what with all you’ve been through.”
Jill’s lips trembled. “You’re the queen. You have more important things to worry about.”
“And you’re my sister. My family. I can’t keep making others take care of you when I barely know where to start.”
“This is Court. You can’t make the world stop spinning because I’m scared of my own shadow.” She pulled her arms back to hug herself.
Lissa let go of her face. “If all I can do for you is give you a safer space to breathe, it’s the least I can do.”
Sniffling, Jill looked away and caught sight of them in the mirrors. She almost felt caught off guard at how normal it looked? She couldn’t be in the same room as Vasilisa without feeling self conscious of how much grander a presence the elder Dragomir had always had, but now it almost felt like they were on the same level. She even nearly recognized herself in the profile of Lissa’s sympathetic expression.
Jill pressed a hand to her chest, imagining a ragged wound there that she’d never truly been alive to see or feel, but that always seemed to ache when she tried to imagine her place in Lissa’s life or Moroi Court at large.
“Does…” She swallowed, eyes darting to the dainty crown that was almost hidden in Lissa’s pale blonde waves. “Does it ever get easier?”
Lissa sighed, and suddenly it was so easy to see just how tired she was. It reminded her of something she’d grown to see in Adrian before their bond was numbed by his medication. Maybe it was Spirit, or just the way they were, or both, but they carried themselves and faced the world as bright, brilliant sparks equivalent to living stars. But to burn so bright meant to burn out, and frequently. Sydney had once gone on a tangent about how many of the stars they saw weren’t actually there, but the remains of light traveling to reach them through space long after the source had died.
Lissa smiled sadly, and Jill wondered whether there was ever a chance that her radiance was anything but a remnant of what could have been. “Maybe one day we can figure that out together.”
They walked out with Jill acting a silent part of Lissa’s retinue, chin held high while Lissa bade everyone farewell. Rose touched her arm and raised an eyebrow as they reached the car, getting a brisk head shake in response.
Her purse buzzed, phone forgotten in all the tension, and she pulled it out on the way home to a message from Adrian.
It was a photo of Declan, trying oh so hard to maneuver his foot into his mouth.
Lissa and Rose had to start from scratch to try and figure out why this time she couldn’t stop laughing rather than crying.
Art Deco Glamour: Adding a Touch of Luxury to Your Inner West Renovation
Homeowners in the Inner West of Sydney are increasingly drawn to renovating their properties to reflect their personal style while preserving the historical charm of the area. If you're embarking on a Home Renovation Inner West project, adding Art Deco glamour to your design can provide an elegant and timeless touch that will elevate your living space. Art Deco, with its opulence, geometric patterns, and luxurious materials, is a style that resonates with those seeking both modernity and a nod to the past.
In this article, we will explore how to incorporate Art Deco elements into your Home Renovation Inner West, ensuring that your home reflects the glamour and sophistication associated with this iconic design movement. We will discuss design ideas for key areas of your home, materials, colour schemes, and more. By the end of this guide, you will have a clearer vision of how to infuse Art Deco into your renovation.
What is Art Deco?
Before delving into how to incorporate Art Deco into your Home Renovation Inner West, it's important to understand what defines this style. Art Deco emerged in the 1920s and 1930s as a response to the austerity of the First World War, symbolising a return to luxury, glamour, and modernity. The style is characterised by:
Geometric shapes – Zigzags, chevrons, sunbursts, and other bold geometric patterns.
Rich materials – Marble, gold, lacquered wood, and chrome are some of the high-end materials commonly used.
Bold colours – Contrasting colours like black and gold, deep blues, reds, and greens often dominate Art Deco interiors.
Opulent decor – Sculptures, decorative mirrors, lavish lighting fixtures, and ornate furniture pieces are iconic.
Symmetry – Balance and symmetry in design are key to achieving the luxurious yet structured feel of Art Deco.
Key Areas to Focus on in Your Art Deco Home Renovation Inner West
When incorporating Art Deco into your renovation, you should pay special attention to several key areas of your home that can be transformed with the right design choices. These areas will become focal points where Art Deco glamour can truly shine.
1. Entrance Hallway
The entrance hallway is the first impression guests will have of your home, so it’s crucial to set the tone for your Home Renovation Inner West project here. To create an Art Deco-inspired hallway, consider these ideas:
Flooring: Opt for high-shine materials like black-and-white marble tiles or herringbone wooden floors.
Walls: Geometric wallpaper with metallic accents or bold paint choices (think deep emerald or sapphire) can make a striking impact.
Lighting: Statement chandeliers or wall sconces with glass, chrome, or gold finishes are ideal for adding a touch of luxury.
2. Living Room
The living room is the heart of your home, making it an ideal place to embrace the glamour of Art Deco in your Home Renovation Inner West.
Furniture: Look for plush, velvet-upholstered sofas, lacquered coffee tables, and armchairs with curved lines to add Art Deco elegance. Incorporate sleek mirrored surfaces or glass-topped tables to reflect light and create a sense of openness.
Lighting: Consider adding tiered chandeliers, pendant lights, or lamps with geometric or fluted designs.
Decor: Embrace symmetry in your room layout, and don’t shy away from bold art pieces. A large sunburst mirror or geometric artwork can become a showpiece.
3. Kitchen
A kitchen may not be the first place you think of when considering an Art Deco aesthetic, but with careful planning, it can become a luxurious and functional space.
Cabinetry: Opt for streamlined, sleek cabinets with polished chrome or gold handles.
Surfaces: Choose marble or quartz countertops for a luxurious touch, or consider black gloss finishes for your cabinetry and splashbacks to achieve a sophisticated, glamorous look.
Appliances: Choose appliances with a vintage flair, such as retro-inspired refrigerators and stove tops, to subtly nod to the Art Deco period while keeping functionality intact.
4. Bathroom
Bathrooms in Art Deco homes are synonymous with luxury and indulgence, and your Home Renovation Inner West can achieve this effect with some clever updates.
Tilework: Classic black-and-white tiles, arranged in bold geometric patterns, are a hallmark of the Art Deco style.
Fixtures: Opt for gold, brass, or chrome fittings for taps, showerheads, and towel rails.
Bathtubs and Sinks: Freestanding bathtubs with ornate claw feet, coupled with pedestal sinks, can evoke the glamour of 1920s bathrooms. Marble or marble-look materials for counters and walls also add opulence.
5. Bedroom
Transform your bedroom into a haven of luxury with these Art Deco ideas:
Bed Frame: Opt for a bed with an upholstered, tufted headboard in velvet or silk. Sleek, mirrored bed frames or metallic finishes add that Art Deco elegance.
Lighting: Art Deco-inspired lamps and sconces, with frosted glass or geometric patterns, can bring a sophisticated glow to the room.
Accessories: Add patterned cushions and throws with geometric designs or bold colour contrasts, such as black and gold or navy and white.
Colour Palettes for Art Deco
One of the most recognisable features of Art Deco is its bold and luxurious colour palettes. When planning your Home Renovation Inner West, selecting the right colours is essential for achieving the desired glamour and elegance. Some popular Art Deco colour schemes include:
Black and Gold: For a dramatic and luxurious effect, combine deep black hues with gold accents in furnishings, lighting, and accessories.
Emerald Green and Sapphire Blue: Rich jewel tones are a staple of Art Deco design. Incorporate these hues in walls, textiles, or feature pieces like artwork or statement furniture.
Silver and Grey: For a softer, more contemporary take on Art Deco, use sleek silver tones paired with soft greys and whites. This creates a more minimalist yet elegant aesthetic.
Crimson and Burgundy: Deep reds and burgundies can be used sparingly as accent colours to evoke a sense of drama and luxury in smaller spaces.
Materials to Use
Art Deco interiors are all about richness and texture. In your Home Renovation Inner West, consider using these materials to capture the lavish feel of this style:
Marble: Marble is a quintessential Art Deco material. Use it for countertops, floors, or decorative accents.
Lacquered Wood: High-gloss finishes on wood furniture can add a sleek, polished touch to your home.
Chrome and Stainless Steel: Chrome lighting fixtures, door handles, and other metallic accents can help achieve that Art Deco gleam.
Velvet: Incorporate velvet textiles in furniture, cushions, and curtains for a plush, opulent touch.
Glass and Mirrors: Reflective surfaces are important for creating light and space in Art Deco designs. Large mirrors with geometric frames can become statement pieces.
Conclusion
Incorporating Art Deco into your Home Renovation Inner West offers a fantastic opportunity to blend historical elegance with modern luxury. Whether you're redesigning your entrance hallway, living room, kitchen, bathroom, or bedroom, the key to achieving the Art Deco look lies in embracing bold geometric patterns, rich materials, and opulent finishes.
With careful attention to lighting, colour schemes, and furniture choices, you can create a home that embodies the timeless glamour and sophistication of the Art Deco movement. This design approach not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of your Inner West property but also adds value and charm, making your home stand out in a highly sought-after area.
Capturing Bondi’s Coastal Vibe
At the heart of Bondi’s interior design aesthetic is the connection to the beach and surrounding natural environment. This minimalist color scheme is often paired with natural materials like timber, stone, and rattan, which add warmth and texture to the space while enhancing its coastal appeal.
This creates a seamless flow that allows residents to enjoy the fresh ocean breeze and views, fostering a sense of openness and calm that mirrors the beachside lifestyle.
The Importance of Functionality
In Bondi, where space can be limited due to its high property demand, cdc duplex design prioritize functionality without sacrificing style. Multi-functional furniture, built-in storage solutions, and clever layouts are often used to optimize space in both small apartments and larger homes. This ensures that the home remains clutter-free and maximizes every square meter, which is especially important for compact living spaces close to the beach.
Open-plan living is another key feature of Bondi interiors, with kitchens, dining areas, and lounges blending into one cohesive space. Designing a Functional and Stylish North Shore Kitchen for Everyday Use
When it comes to home renovation in North Shore, one of the most important spaces to focus on is the kitchen. The kitchen is often considered the heart of the home, where meals are prepared, families gather, and memories are made. Designing a kitchen that is both functional and stylish is crucial, especially for homeowners in the North Shore who are looking to enhance their everyday living experience. In this blog, we'll explore the key elements of creating a kitchen that meets both practical needs and aesthetic desires, making it a true centerpiece of your home renovation.
Understanding the North Shore Aesthetic
The North Shore of Sydney is known for its blend of traditional charm and modern sophistication. Homes in this area often reflect a mix of classic and contemporary design elements, and your kitchen should be no exception. When planning your home renovation in North Shore, it's essential to consider how your kitchen design will complement the overall style of your home while also incorporating the latest trends and technologies.
Key Design Elements of North Shore Kitchens
Timeless Materials: North Shore kitchens often feature natural materials like marble, granite, and hardwood, which add warmth and durability to the space. These materials not only look elegant but also stand the test of time.
Neutral Color Palettes: Soft, neutral tones such as whites, creams, and greys are popular in North Shore kitchens. These colors create a clean and calming environment, making the kitchen a welcoming space for everyday use.
Seamless Integration of Old and New: A successful North Shore kitchen design seamlessly blends traditional elements, such as shaker-style cabinets, with modern appliances and fixtures. This combination creates a space that is both charming and functional.
Attention to Detail: From intricate tile work to custom cabinetry, attention to detail is a hallmark of North Shore kitchens. These small touches elevate the overall design, giving your kitchen a refined and polished look.
Functionality: The Backbone of Kitchen Design
While aesthetics are important, the functionality of your kitchen is paramount. A well-designed kitchen should make everyday tasks easier and more enjoyable, from cooking and cleaning to entertaining guests.
Layout and Flow
The layout of your kitchen is one of the most critical aspects of its functionality. When planning your home renovation in North Shore, consider the following layout options:
The Work Triangle: This classic kitchen layout concept places the sink, stove, and refrigerator at three points of a triangle, minimizing the distance between these key areas. This setup is ideal for maximizing efficiency in food preparation and cooking.
The L-Shaped Layout: An L-shaped kitchen layout is perfect for open-plan homes, allowing for easy interaction with other areas of the home, such as the dining or living room. This layout also provides ample counter space for meal preparation.
The U-Shaped Layout: A U-shaped kitchen offers plenty of storage and counter space, making it ideal for larger kitchens. This layout is also highly functional, as it allows multiple people to work in the kitchen simultaneously without feeling cramped.
Island and Peninsula: Adding an island or peninsula to your kitchen can enhance both its functionality and style. These features provide additional workspace, storage, and seating, making your kitchen more versatile.
Storage Solutions
A functional kitchen must have adequate storage to keep everything organized and within easy reach. Here are some storage solutions to consider during your home renovation in North Shore:
Custom Cabinetry: Tailored to fit your kitchen's specific dimensions, custom cabinetry maximizes storage space while adding a bespoke touch to your design.
Pull-Out Shelves and Drawers: These features make it easier to access items stored in the back of cabinets, ensuring that every inch of space is utilized efficiently.
Pantry Organization: A well-organized pantry is essential for a functional kitchen. Consider installing adjustable shelves, pull-out baskets, and door-mounted racks to keep your pantry neat and accessible.
Overhead Storage: Utilize vertical space by adding overhead cabinets or open shelving. This is particularly useful for storing less frequently used items, such as specialty cookware or serving dishes.
Lighting and Ventilation
Proper lighting and ventilation are crucial for a functional kitchen. Here's how to ensure your kitchen is well-lit and properly ventilated:
Layered Lighting: Combine ambient, task, and accent lighting to create a well-lit kitchen. Under-cabinet lights, pendant lights over the island, and recessed ceiling lights are all excellent options.
Natural Light: Maximize natural light by incorporating large windows or skylights into your kitchen design. Natural light not only brightens the space but also creates a more inviting atmosphere.
Effective Ventilation: A powerful range hood is essential for removing cooking odors, smoke, and grease from the air. Choose a range hood that complements your kitchen's design while providing adequate ventilation.
Style: Elevating Your Kitchen's Aesthetic Appeal
Once you've addressed the functionality of your kitchen, it's time to focus on style. A well-designed kitchen should be visually appealing and reflect your personal taste. During your home renovation in North Shore, consider these style tips to create a kitchen that stands out:
Choosing the Right Fixtures and Finishes
The fixtures and finishes you choose can significantly impact the overall look of your kitchen. Here are some considerations:
Cabinet Hardware: The hardware on your cabinets can add a touch of elegance or modernity to your kitchen. Opt for high-quality materials such as brushed nickel, polished chrome, or antique brass.
Countertops: Your choice of countertop material will influence both the look and functionality of your kitchen. Quartz, granite, and marble are popular choices for their durability and aesthetic appeal.
Backsplash: A stylish backsplash can serve as the focal point of your kitchen. Consider materials like subway tiles, mosaic tiles, or even a slab of natural stone for a sophisticated look.
Faucets and Sinks: The faucet and sink you choose should complement the overall design of your kitchen. Consider options like a farmhouse sink paired with a pull-down faucet for a timeless look.
Incorporating Modern Technology
Modern technology can enhance the functionality and style of your kitchen. Here are some tech-savvy features to consider:
Smart Appliances: Invest in smart appliances that offer convenience and efficiency, such as a refrigerator with a built-in touchscreen or a Wi-Fi-enabled oven.
Touchless Faucets: A touchless faucet not only adds a modern touch to your kitchen but also improves hygiene by reducing the need to touch the faucet with dirty hands.
Integrated Lighting Controls: Smart lighting systems allow you to control your kitchen's lighting with the touch of a button or through voice commands, adding both convenience and ambiance.
Under-Cabinet Charging Stations: Keep your devices charged and out of the way by incorporating under-cabinet charging stations into your kitchen design.
Personalizing Your Space
Your kitchen should reflect your personality and lifestyle. Consider these ways to personalize your kitchen during your home renovation in North Shore:
Open Shelving: Open shelving allows you to display your favorite dishes, cookbooks, and decorative items, adding a personal touch to your kitchen.
Custom Lighting Fixtures: Choose lighting fixtures that make a statement, whether it's a chandelier over the dining area or unique pendant lights above the island.
Artwork and Decor: Incorporate artwork, plants, and other decor items that resonate with your style and enhance the overall aesthetic of your kitchen.
Color Accents: While a neutral color palette is common in North Shore kitchens, adding pops of color through accessories, bar stools, or a feature wall can create a dynamic and personalized space.
Conclusion
Designing a functional and stylish kitchen is a crucial part of any home renovation North Shore. By focusing on key design elements, ensuring optimal functionality, and incorporating your personal style, you can create a kitchen that not only meets your everyday needs but also enhances the overall aesthetic of your home.
