“Katakutan ninyo ang kasaysayan, dahil wala kayong lihim na maitatago sa kanya.”
(Fear history, for it respects no secrets.)
Gregoria de Jesús (May 9, 1875 – March 15, 1943) was the founder and vice–president of the women’s chapter of the Katipunan as the wife of Andrés Bonifacio. Thus, she is also unofficially considered to be the first First Lady of the Philippine Republic.
Gregoria was born in Caloocan to middle–class parents Nicolás de Jesús, who later served as a gobernadorcillo, and Baltazara Álvarez Francisco. At the age of 18, she caught the eye of  Andrés Bonifacio who was then working as a clerk for the German trading firm Fressell and Company. After six months of courtship and despite objections from her parents as Andrés was a Freemason, they were married twice in March 1893, once in a traditional Catholic wedding at the Binondo Church, and again that same night according to the rites of the Katipunan, who did not recognize the Church’s authority as an oppressive colonial force. Gregoria would have one son with Andrés, a namesake of its father, but the child would later die of smallpox.
Gregoria was then inducted into the Katipunan under the code name Lakambini (noblewoman, Muse). The women’s chapter was also formed upon her induction, making her its vice–president. Among the responsibilities of the women’s chapter was to distract the Guardia Civil from the secret late–night meetings by acting as if they were conducting balls and fiestas. They would also be the ones to hide the society’s documents from the authorities during unannounced inspections. When the revolution broke out, Gregoria would smuggle weapons and gunpowder to the revolutionaries, hiding them under the folds of her skirts. She would also learn how to ride a horse and shoot rifles.
On the 19th of August 1896, the Katipunan was exposed to the Spanish authorities by Teodoro Patiño, and Gregoria and her husband had to go into hiding while the authorities arrested, jailed, and executed members of their secret society. As the revolution broke out in full force, internal conflict was also brewing deep within the Magdalo and Magdiwang factions of the Katipunan, and Andrés and Gregoria would soon be caught in the middle of it.
In April 1897, after a failed elections wherein the Magdalo faction, particularly Daniel Tirona, refused to recognize Bonifacio’s election as Director of War, which led to Bonifacio being insulted and walking away, Aguinaldo ordered the arrest of Bonifacio and his brother Procopio, during which both brothers were injured. A trial in a kangaroo court summarily followed, where the brothers were judged to be guilty of sedition despite insufficient evidence. They were executed in the mountains of Maragondon, Cavite sometime on the tenth of May 1897. To this day, no one knows where their final resting place is located, although Gregoria was said to have wandered for days within the mountains to find her husband’s grave.
After the war, Gregoria would remarry to Julio Nakpil, a commander of the northern forces of the Katipunan who took her in after the murder of her first husband. They settled in Quiapo and had one son, the National Artist for Architecture Juan Nakpil.
Gregoria would outlive her second husband as well, and die at the age of 67 on the 15th of March 1943, during the Japanese Occupation of the Philippines.

FROM BAILEN TO GENERAL AGUINALDO After visiting the churches of Amadeo and Mendez, my sister, my brother-in-law and I continued with our 2021 Tour of Cavite's Heritage Churches by visiting the church of General Aguinaldo. I thought General Aguinaldo was a town that was formed in the 20th century to honor Emilio Aguinaldo. Reading Dr. Emmanuel Franco Calairo's "Kasaysayan ng mga Bayan at Lungsod ng Cavite," I learned that General Aguinaldo was formed much earlier, and that it has an older name - Bailen. It was in 1858 when Bailen was formed from the barrios of Batas and Guyong-guyong, which used to be part of Maragondon. Calairo raised the idea that Bailen might have taken its name from the Spanish word, "bailar" (to dance). Another possibility, though, is that it was named after Bailén, a town in Jaén, Spain. It was only in 1965, after the enactment of Republic Act No. 4346 when Bailen was renamed General Aguinaldo to honor the first Philippine president. According to Calairo's "Mga Makasaysayang Simbahan sa Cavite," the parish of Bailen was separated from that of Maragondon in 1857. San José was its patron saint. Under the supervision of its first parish priest, Padre Baltazar Narvaez, the first church and convent of Bailen were built. There are two bells dated 1859 that are currently displayed outside the church. One is dedicated to San José; the other is dedicated to Nuestra Señora del Rosario. Nuestra Señora del Rosario is the patroness of the Dominicans, but Bailen was never under the Dominicans. However, nearby towns, such as Alfonso, Indang and Mendez-Nuñez were under the Dominicans, so devotion to the Nuestra Señora del Rosario must have reached Bailen. The administration of the parish was turned over from the secular clergy to the Augustinian Recollects. Calairo did not mention the specific year, but it must have been in 1860, the year when the Augustinian Recollects took over the parish of Maragondon. The church and the convent burned down during the revolution against Spain. For several years, it had no parish priest of its own. #captivatingcavite #thetimetrekker https://www.instagram.com/p/CYSPtnkB-K8/?utm_medium=tumblr

RELIGION AND THE REVOLUTION IN NAIC After Ternate, my sister and my brother-in-law brought me to Naic as part of our 2020 tour of Cavite’s heritage churches. My only visit to Naic prior to last year happened in 2000 when my college classmate, Franco López, invited me and other friends to his family’s farm for an intimate birthday celebration. Relaxing inside their farmhouse, which was surrounded by rice fields and bamboo groves, my impression of Naic was that of a beautiful countryside, much like those I’ve seen in the paintings of Fernando Amorsolo. Two decades later, I was surprised to learn that Naic has a storied past. We went to the center of Naic where its Neo-Gothic church of Naic, formally known as the Diocesan Shrine of the Immaculate Concepction, stood. I tried looking for a marker about the church's history from the National Historical Commission of the Philippines or its predecessors, but I was not able to find any. The Official Website of the Province of Cavite offered some information about the history of Naic. It states that Naic, along with Ternate and Magallanes, was once part of Maragondon. In 1758, the Jesuits founded in Naic a community with a visita. In 1791, the community became a town. The Dominicans were said to have gotten a hacienda and built their Casa Hacienda in Naic in 1830. Although I was not able to find a marker about the church's history, I did find a 2014 NHCP marker about one of its parish priests, Padre Modesto de Castro. If the name of Padre Modesto de Castro sounds familiar, you might have heard about him in your Filipino classes. He wrote the epistolary novel, "Urbana at Felisa," which talks about etiquette, manners and civic duties in 19th century Philippines. Born in Biñan, Laguna on June 15, 1819, he also wrote "Ang Pláticas Doctrinales," "Novena de San Isidro Labrador," "Novena del Apostol Santiago" and "Exposición de las Siete Palabras." Padre de Castro served as the parish priest of Paombong, Bulacan (1851-1854) and as the rector of Manila Cathedral (1855-1857) before serving as the parish priest of Naic (1857-1864). https://www.instagram.com/p/CVy5k11B8pO/?utm_medium=tumblr

Heritage and urbanization, how an icon stood the test of time
#PHnews: Heritage and urbanization, how an icon stood the test of time
KAWIT, Cavite -- The province of Cavite, with its plethora of historical sites (not to mention events), is being transformed as an investment hub in the greater capital region. With this changing landscape, how will history play in the backdrop of modernization and industrialization?
In celebration of Museums and Galleries Month this October, the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP), through its Museo ni Emilio Aguinaldo (MEA), has mounted the exhibit "Emilio Aguinaldo Shrine: Identity on Shifting Landscape" from October 5 to November 22 to present the rich historical and cultural face of the iconic Emilio Aguinaldo Shrine amid recent developments and the influx of migration.
Cluster head of NHCP-Cavite and MEA curator Haidee Paulette Bedruz said Thursday that the theme came about as the construction of new establishments and the imminent completion of a business site offer a new face for the town.
"It gives people new things to see and visit in Kawit, unlike in the past where(in) visiting Kawit means visiting the Aguinaldo Shrine," she said.
The NHCP has brought this concept to revisit the role the Aguinaldo Shrine played in the town's historical, cultural, and tourism dynamics.
By creating awareness of the significance of built heritage in perpetuating the ideals of the 1896 Revolution and the Proclamation of Independence in 1898 as relevant to the people in the present, Bedruz expressed hope that this would empower Kawiteños to see the value of the Aguinaldo Shrine, "amidst their current progress and continue to associate themselves in the identity of the house."
"As presented in its narratives, it will show how the Aguinaldo Shrine has been part of the larger community of Kawit, allowing it to remain a part of our national history yet relevant to the local perspective of the people," she said.
In recent years, cultural mapping engaged the community and saw the significance of other heritage sites, such as the Irasan, Pandayan, and the St. Mary Magdalene Church.
In the past, these sites were visited not for tourism but for their actual purposes. Today, they are part of a bigger cultural and historical narrative of the town.
The Museum and Galleries Month is observed every October by virtue of Presidential Proclamation 798 series of 1991. This year's celebration theme is "Building the Nation, One Exhibit at a Time".
The exhibit also forms part of “Project Bayani: Curating South Luzon”, a simultaneous exhibit among members of the Southern Luzon Association of Museums. The project attempts to promote a museum route by creating a unifying exhibit to capture in a single theme the thrusts of each participating museum.
The MEA is one of the three NHCP-run museums in Cavite, along with Museo ni Baldomero ni Aguinaldo (MBA, also located in Kawit town), and the Museo ng Paglilitis ni Andres Bonifacio (Bonifacio Trial House) in Cavite's Maragondon.
The museum, located at the ground floor of the iconic Emilio Aguinaldo Shrine in Kaingen village here, is open from 8 a.m. to 4.p.m. on Tuesdays to Sundays. (PNA)

'IT'S A MIRACLE’ JPIA reaps Karakol 2018 title
-----
After a series of practices, labor on production designs, and sweat-extracting and grinding performance on “kalye” and gymnasium, the Junior Philippine Institute of Accountants (JPIA) dominated this year's Karakol Festival, emerging victorious in two categories while emphasizing God’s role in their triumph.
In his statement, JPIA President Russel Rodelas tagged their earned title namely the champion and the Best in “Karakol sa Kalye” as a 'miracle' that came from the 'grace of God' as he and the other senior members found success in bringing life and enthusiasm to the organization.
"It's a miracle! Kami bilang fouth year [students], bilang officers, [ako] bilang presidente, aim naming ibalik ulit 'yung sigla ng JPIA. Miracle talaga siya kasi every time na nagpe-pray kami, 'di namin ine-expect na mananalo kami. This time diba, by God's grace, nanalo, in Jesus' name," Rodelas said.
In addition, the Recoletos Educational Assistance for Deserving Students (READS) group took home the Best in Production Design and 1st runner-up award while the Junior Financial Executives (JFINEX) got the 2nd runner-up title.
This year’s Feast of Saints’ highlight event showcased churches in Cavite that were founded and supervised by the Augustinian Recollects from which the Junior Philippine Computer Society (JPCS) portrayed Saint Joseph the Worker Parish at Bailen (now General Emilio Aguinaldo), Our Lady of the Assumption Parish in Maragondon exhibited through the performance of Junior Financial Executives (JFINEX), Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Parish in Rosario showcased by the Federation of Organized Council of Engineering Students (FORCES), the College of Sciences, Arts and Nursing (CASN) instilled the influence of San Roque Church of Cavite City in their presentation, Our Lady of Candelaria Church for JPIA, Saint Michael the Archangel Parish portrayed by the Senior High School Department, San Pedro Apostol in Cavite City was showcased by the Junior High School, while the Recoletos Educational Assistance for Deserving Students (READS) group performed in line with the concept of Immaculate Conception Parish of Dasmariñas, Cavite.
For the first time, the SSC-RdC’s Karakol Festival has featured the interschool competition which brought in the presence of the Cavite National High School and Saint Mary Magdalene School from Kawit wherein the former topped the contest, bringing home the championship, Best in Production Design and Best in Karakol sa Kalye titles while the latter reaped the runner-up award.
The event was held at the San Sebastian College-Recoletos de Cavite, Cañacao Campus which accommodated the whole Sebastinian community as well as the guest performers, judges, and other visitors.
Meanwhile, the fruitful result of the contest has complemented their daily practice of routines as well as the heavy expectations and high standards that the audience have for their squad which are uplifted and delighted to be on their unique curriculum, said a Cavite National High School—Special Program for the Arts adviser.
“SPA kasi kami kaya everyday [ang] practice [namin para sa Karakol competition]. Super saya at nakaka-proud [na manalo]. Nasa special program for the arts kasi sila kaya mataas ang standard at expectation sa kanila ng tao.[Sila ay] honored and proud na nasa SPA sila,” Mr. Louie Salvador said.
Salvador added that this year’s Karakol tilt has a fired up intensity due to the evolved and developed effort coming from various organizations compared to the past years.

WHEN IN CAVITE: THINGS TO VISIT HERE IN CAVITE
Looking for a great place to travel? Well, I would like to suggest this small province in the Philippines located on the southern shores of Manila Bay in the CALABARZON region on Luzon Island – CAVITE. Cavite is also known as the historical capital of the Philippines because of the part that the province played in the nation during its independence.  Yes, this was all a fact. Tourist spots in Cavite are mostly historic. And if you like to know more about Philippines history, you can visit this province and it will be like seeing the history itself, but there’s also plenty things to visit and do in Cavite aside from seeing those historical places. Let’s take a look at some of the things that you can do and visit in the province.
1. Emilio Aguinaldo Shrine and Museum
This is located at the Kawit, Cavite. This is the birthplace of Philippine Independence, where the Philippine Flag was waved to proclaim our independence from Spain. It is also the birthplace of General Emilio Aguinaldo; the first President of the Philippines.  The home is where his remains are entombed, but it also serves as a museum that is one of the Cavite tourist spots that you want to visit. Entering the house, you will feel nostalgic like you somehow become a part of the 19th and 20th century. Upon the entrance, you will see an old bowling alley. There were also written scripts about Emilio Aguinaldo’s life, his achievements and his contributions. Most of the items that you can see inside his house were still original, about 100 years or more, older than your grandparents. If you want to see more of this, you should visit this historical house.

2. The Original Digman Halo-Halo and Home Made Siopao
This is located at H. Rubio Street, Barangay Digman, Bacoor, Cavite. This homed based business has been a favorite place of locals, tourist, and food enthusiasts for more than a decade. They say that y been to Bacoor if you have not tried Digman’s Halo-Halo. They offer other foods like tapsilog, siopao, pancit, ihaw and other palamig like mais con yelo, and the most famous Origal Halo-halo.  If you want to refresh your mind and chill in life, this halo-halo is worth the price.

3. Cabag Cave
This cave located in Poblacion 2, Maragondon, Cavite is a great tourist spots if you want to explore caves and areas that are off the beaten path. The place is found at the bottom of the slope which runs down a steep angle to a brook. Lush greenery surrounds this little valley below where Cabag Cave is found. The cave in this place is kind of hidden, so getting to the entrance requires a bit of a hike that is followed by a climb further down the mountain until you reach the cave that has water flowing out of it. Remember to be careful because the rocky path can be slippery, but if you can brave the trek, there is a pool of water inside the cave that not many have seen. So if you’re fond of underground rivers, you should try this one.

4. Saint Michael the Archangel Parish Church
Saint Michael Parish Church is located along the street of Evangelista in Poblacion, Bacoor and right in front of the town’s Hall of Justice. So basically, the whole town grew from this church, the same with many other cities and towns all over the Philippines. You can actually tell that the church is very old. The walls in the side of the church are filled with tombs. It was established in 1669 and was constructed using bamboos, straws and nipa leaves.  It  was during the  term of Fr. Mariano Gomez  from   1824 to 1872  (48 years ) that the  church, known once as the oldest church in Cavite, was  renovated   with the  present architectural  structure made of  adobe and tegula. Unequipped with modern-day concrete cement mix, thousands of duck egg whites were utilized to bond the huge boulders of adobe. Your trip to Cavite wouldn’t be complete without visiting this religious and historical church in Bacoor, Cavite.

5. Picnic Grove
This one is located at Tagaytay, Cavite and one of the most popular tourist spots of all time. If you want to breathe and feel the cool breeze of the wind and if you want to spend some time with your family, friends and even your special one, this place is good for you. When it comes to nature sightseeing and family-friendly activities, Picnic Grove has become synonymous with Tagaytay. Aside from it, this park is very affordable one. There’s a lot of view to see, a lot of souvenir shops, and very attracting zoo. Rides like the Zip line can be found inside, too. If you are stress and you want to relax, or even if you’re looking for some photos to upload on your Instagram account, I highly recommend this place to you.

Those places are just some of the places that you can visit, WHEN YOU’RE IN CAVITE. Don’t worry about the price of your transportation and other expenses because I’ll promise to you that those places are definitely worth the price, whatever the amount of money you spend just to go to those places. And proudly, I can say, that it is really more fun in the Philippines.

philippine independence month | relationships [1/5]: andres bonifacio and gregoria de jesús
“On May 9, [Gregoria] suddenly realized that it was her birthday and began to weep as she recalled how her parents never let the day pass without a celebration. Bonifacio, who was feverish from his wounds (he had been wounded during his capture), tried to console his wife: ‘Alas, you tied yourself to a troubled life!’ She hastened to assure him that she was not lamenting her lot: ‘It had always been my dream to find as my companion to life a man with a golden love for freedom and for our country. It seems that the fortune you dream of is the fortune you get. And if now these moments of misfortune come to us, what shall we do? They come to us from the Lord!’”  — A Question of Heroes, Nick Joaquin
In 1892, the widowed 29-year-old Bonifacio met the then 18-year-old Gregoria during a meeting with his friend and her cousin, Teodoro Plata. Bonifacio courted Gregoria, who was nicknamed Oryang, for a year amidst her parents’ disapproval, as it was well known that Bonifacio was a member of the Freemasons. They eventually relented, and Bonifacio and Oryang got married in a Catholic ceremony on March 1893 at Binondo Church. Later that night, in nearby Santa Cruz, Bonifacio and Oryang remarried under the red flag of the Katipunan using the rites of their secret society, as some of the members did not approve of the Catholic Church as an oppressive colonial force. After the ceremony, Oryang was inducted into the Katipunan’s women’s chapter and became its head, taking the pseudonym of Lakambini. A year later, Oryang would give birth in her parents’ home to her only son with Bonifacio, whom she called Andres and would die young of smallpox.
When the Katipunan was exposed in 1896, Gregoria would accompany her husband through skirmishes and council meetings. She became in charge of the safekeeping of the society’s documents and even smuggled the revolutionaries their ammunition by hiding the caches of bullets and gunpowder beneath the folds of her skirt.
Eventually, friction within the members of the Katipunan begun, and from it sprung two factions, the Magdiwang and the Magdalo. Gregoria followed her husband through all this. A trial in a kangaroo court summarily followed, where the brothers were judged to be guilty of sedition despite insufficient evidence.
The Bonifacio brothers were executed in the mountains of Maragondon, Cavite sometime on the tenth of May 1897. The widowed Gregoria was said to have searched all over the mountains for the remains of her late husband, to no avail. Andres’ final resting place remains unknown.

SAN AGUSTÍN AND AGUINALDO IN TANZA My sister, my brother-in-law and I tried to include Tanza in our 2020 tour of Cavite's heritage churches, but it was already getting dark when we left Rosario. When we resumed our tour, it was already the first quarter of 2021. The first on our list this year was the church of Tanza. The Cavite Heritage Educational Series set with modules written by Dr. Emmanuel Calairo helped a lot in shedding light on Tanza's history. Prior to 1770, Tanza was part of San Francisco de Malabon (now General Trias City). Four years after it separated from San Francisco de Malabon, the town was known as Santa Cruz de Malabon. In 1780, Santa Cruz de Malabon became a separate parish. A 1980 Pambansang Suriang Pangkasaysayan marker installed on a wall of the church states that Padre Francisco Nayto was its first parish priest. The Facebook Page of San Agustin de Tanza, however, names Padre Narciso Manas as its first parish priest. It also mentions 1839 as the year when the first church of Tanza was built, but it was later destroyed by an earthquake. The current church dates back to 1873. When Santa Cruz de Malabon separated from San Francisco de Malabon in 1770, the latter was being administered by the secular clergy. Santa Cruz de Malabon must have been under secular priests as well. In 1849, a royal order was issued mandating the handover of certain parishes in Cavite to the religious orders. Santa Cruz de Malabon, along with San Francisco de Malabon, Naic and Indang were given to the Dominicans, which had a hacienda in Santa Cruz de Malabon. In the 1904 Annual Report of the Directory of Lands, it is stated that certain estancias de ganado (cattle ranges) in Maragondon and Malabon were granted to certain leading citizens of Manila around the beginning of the 17th century. These properties were acquired by General Juan Esguerra. After his death, the hacienda of Santa Cruz was inherited by Capitan Juan Fabian Esguerra. The hacienda was awarded to the Province of the Most Holy Name of Jesus of the Augustinian friars in 1727, following the death of Capitan Esguerra, who seemed to have owed money to the friars. #captivatingcavite #thetimetrekker https://www.instagram.com/p/CXzqHOZBRNN/?utm_medium=tumblr

TERNATE'S SANTO NIÑO AND MARDICAS One of the churches we visited in Cavite last year was the Parroquia de Santo Niño de Ternate. At first glance, the church does not look centuries-old. I tried looking for a historical marker to learn more about the history of the church. What I found instead was a 2003 marker that states that Cardinal Luís António Tagle, then Bishop of Imus, consecrated and dedicated the church to God on the 340th Anniversary of its erection as a parish. That means that the parish was established in 1663! In his article published in Philippine Studies, "From Mardicas to Filipinos: Ternate, Cavite in Philippine History," Vicente L. Rafael wrote that Ternate was formerly under Maragondon. It used to be called "Barra de Maragondon" (sandbar of Maragondon). The original settlers of Ternate were Mardicas, which meant both "free men" and "men from the sea," from the island of Ternate in the Moluccas. Ternate Island and the neighboring island of Tidore were part of the Spice Islands. A Jesuit mission station was established in the islands by San Francisco Javier, who converted a good number of the inhabitants during the period when Portugal was actively trading in the area. A rebellion forced the Portuguese to leave Ternate Island and retreat to Tidore Island in 1574. When Rey Felipe II united the thrones of Spain and Portugal, Spain sent several expeditions to Ternate Island from the Philippines. In 1606, Gobernador General Pedro Bravo de Acuña was able to send troops that defeated the forces of Ternate's Sultan Said Din Burkat. The Spaniards then established a garrison in Ternate Island. The Jesuits returned to the island to attend to the spiritual needs of the inhabitants. When the Chinese buccaneer, Koxinga (Kue-Sing), threatened to attack the Philippines in 1662, Gobernador General Sabiniano Manrique de Lara wanted to reinforce the Spanish troops in Manila with soldiers from Zamboanga and Ternate Island. The parish priest of Ternate Island, Padre Diego de Esquivel, SJ, brought with him around 200 Christianized Mardicas to Manila. #captivatingcavite #thetimetrekker https://www.instagram.com/p/CSo1NWXBl2U/?utm_medium=tumblr

Cavite exhibit pays tribute to 'anluwages'
#PHnews: Cavite exhibit pays tribute to 'anluwages'
DASMARIǸAS CITY, Cavite -- An art exhibit that pays tribute to the craftsmanship of Filipino carpenters, back when they were called "anluwages", is ongoing at the Fe Sarmiento-Panlilio Room of the Museo De La Salle, at the De La Salle University here.
The exhibit, "ANLUWAGE: Creating Forms. Mastering Function", provides a glimpse of the remarkable craftsmanship of Filipino artisans and their unique skills of combining aesthetics and function.
"Especially so, now that in the advent of technology and high-powered tools, these artisanal skills are slowly becoming rare," Cecille Torrevillas-Gelicame, National Committee on Museums vice head and Museo De La Salle director, said on Friday.
'ANLUWAGE'. Some of the house parts meticulously carved by Filipino carpenters, or more commonly referred to as "anluwages", are currently on display at the Museo De La Salle's exhibit: "ANLUWAGE: Creating Forms. Mastering Functions" at the museum's Fe Sarmiento-Panlilio Room. (PNA photo by Gladys S. Pino)
She said putting up the exhibit was not easy because the "anluwage" is not just about their works, "but the love and the devotion given by these traditional artisans to the works of art."
Research realizations
Preparations for the exhibit called for extensive research and discussions, before the final artworks were gathered and put on display.
In the process, the exhibit revealed just how architecture evolved through the years, and that old Filipino master "anluwages" were actually the first practitioners of "green architecture".
Green architecture minimizes the harmful effects of construction projects on human health and the environment and its practitioner or designer attempts to safeguard air, water, and earth by choosing eco-friendly building materials and construction practices.
Gelicame also shared how Chinese artisans played greatly in history when it comes to "anluwages".
"Apparently the Chinese brought in the skill and taught our natives how to be as meticulous as they were," she said.
Gelicame said another realization is that the works of "anluwages" were guided by no less than their culture.
"'Di mawawala ang superstitious belief (Their work was guided by their superstitious beliefs)," she said.
"The Oro, Plata, Mata is part of the 'anluwage' belief, including the best time to cut trees for the right projects, and various rituals," she added.
From house parts, furniture pieces to galleons
Meanwhile, former prime minister and now chairman of the MDLS Board of Trustees, Cesar EA Virata, said that "anluwages" could have shared other lines of their craft.
"Meron ding umuukit, at gumawa ng mga santo, at ng dalawang malaking galleon na ang troso ay galing Maragondon (There were sculptures and they made saints, and two galleons using wood from Maragondon),” he said.
Some of the basic tools used by "anluwages" in making furniture pieces, galleons, and "paraws" (sailboats). (PNA photo by Gladys S. Pino)
The "anluwages" also made the "paraw" (sailboat), named the San Bartolome, which Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo used for his trading business.
Virata said he was happy that the MDLS is paying tribute to these artisans through the exhibit because the “anluwages” made use of whatever available materials they had back then, using simple tools.
Revive the craft
Virata called for the revival of the olden Filipino craftsmanship of "anluwages" by planting more construction trees.
"Magtanim ng construction wood, magtanim para sa panggatong, magtanim tayo para sa mga prutas, magtanim tayo para maingatan ang mga gilid ng bundok, at kinakailangan magtanim tayo para sa paggawa ng bahay at kasangkapan (Plant construction wood for firewood, for fruits, to protect the mountains, and for building houses and furniture pieces)," Virata, a descendant of Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo, said as he spoke before members of the South Luzon Association of Museums (SLAMs), students and media during the exhibit opening on September 24.
The province of Cavite is home to centuries-old churches, heritage homes with some well-preserved old wooden furniture pieces and authentic wooden house parts that visitors view with awe, silently wondering how such elegant wood pieces were crafted back then, sans technology.
The exhibit, made possible by DLSU-D Architecture Department, Jherdzfont Graphics, and Cavite’s Provincial Tourism Office, also tackles sustainability through the concept of "Green Architecture”.
"Anluwage", which runs until December 14, is the museum's offering for the Museum and Galleries Month observed every October by virtue of Presidential Proclamation 798 s. 1991. This year's celebration theme is "Building the Nation, One Exhibit at a Time".
The exhibit also forms part of "Project Bayani: Curating South Luzon", a simultaneous exhibit to capture in a single theme the thrusts of each participating museum.
The MDLS is open from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Tuesdays to Saturdays. (PNA)
