A new species of manzanita—a native California shrub famous for its twisted branches and wildfire resilience—has been discovered on the central coast, but its survival is already threatened by urban development that could destroy much of its fragile population. The discovery is detailed in a study published in PhytoKeys, in which researchers used genetic analysis to confirm the plant as a distinct species. Named Arctostaphylos nipumu to honor the Nipomo Mesa where it was discovered and its indigenous heritage, the species stands out for its shaggy gray bark—unlike the iconic red bark found on most California manzanitas.

Could you tell us more about Narinder’s relationships with Peter and Wendy?

I wasn't expecting anyone to want to know, but of course!

Let's see, The relationship with Peter:

As I mentioned before, Peter is the son of Juliet (the first disciple of the flock of the lamb), so his way of relating to the world is directly related to the False Prophet's new religion: Basically no fear of ​​the old religion and provided with everything, so little understanding of why anyone would not want to live happily in the cult. By the time Peter noticed Narinder (as an adult and already a disciple), the cat was in a strange period of transition between his hatred of his situation and his resignation to being powerless to do anything about it.

Guided at first by his desire to help Narinder change his mind about the cult, he decided to approach him, and this began their relationship, which wasn't particularly intense nor deep. Peter had a gentle soul and a lot of joy for living, which, while it repelled Narinder at first, ultimately proved impossible to resist and they played around a little (to the great surprise of the False Prophet and the Lamb).

Peter's greatest achievement was breaking the first barrier of the cat that would later lead to his conversion to the new religion.

The relationship with Wendy:

Many years later, the one who finally managed to shake Narinder's world arrived. The cat was already a disciple and had his place in the cult already assigned (ridiculous uniform included) by the time the red bear arrived. Wendy was the heartthrob of the cult, with great charisma and beauty, many admired her and wanted to be chosen by her.

To no one's surprise, it was her who initiated this relationship. She'd already had two previous partners (one particularly funny in retrospect) by the time she set her eyes on her new conquest. Unlike his previous relationship, where the cat basically went along with the flow in order to feel better about his situation, this time Narinder was already quite comfortable with his position by the time the bear came to win him over.

This relationship was much deeper and involved more intense emotions. Once Narinder reciprocated, the bear did not look at anyone else again and they had a beautiful coexistence until the end of her days.

Narinder will never talk about it openly, but he remembers both of them with enough affection to have asked a disciple to embroider their symbols on his apron.

BONUS:

They both convinced Narinder to go to the Mating Tend with them. While those were two COMPLETELY different scenarios (emotions involved and all that), it's still an achievement in itself lol.

Like all children of the cult, both were raised by the Lamb, so Narinder had no parental relationship with them.

I was excited to see (although also saddened) by the fact that there has been a manzanita right outside by office and I’ve never gone out to see it in the two and a half years I’ve been here. It’s such a beautiful little tree, and I would appreciate any ID on it as it’s not the Santa Cruz type and may be a cultivar. The native bumblebees were visiting the flowers all afternoon.
