Enhance Packaging Efficiency with Manual Strapping Tools
Efficient packaging is essential for businesses to ensure the safety and integrity of their products during storage, transportation, and handling. One effective way to enhance packaging efficiency is by utilizing manual strapping tools. These tools play a crucial role in securely bundling and containing packages, providing stability and protection. In this article, we will explore the different types of manual strapping tools, the benefits they offer, and how they can significantly enhance packaging efficiency.
Types of Manual Strapping Tools:
Manual strapping tools come in various forms, each designed for specific tasks in the packaging process. The three primary types of manual strapping tools are hand-held tensioners, sealers and crimpers, and combination tools.
Hand-held tensioners are used to apply tension to strapping rolls, ensuring a tight and secure fit around packages. These tools feature adjustable settings to accommodate different strapping materials and load requirements. By applying the appropriate tension, hand-held tensioners improve load stability, preventing shifting or damage during transit.
Sealers and crimpers are employed to seal the strapping material once it is tensioned. They securely fasten poly strapping seals, effectively sealing the package. These tools ensure that the strapping remains in place, maintaining the integrity of the packaging throughout the supply chain.
Combination tools offer the convenience of both tensioning and sealing functionalities in a single tool. They are versatile and efficient, enabling users to streamline the packaging process by eliminating the need for separate tools. Combination tools are particularly useful for businesses with high-volume packaging requirements.
Benefits of Manual Strapping Tools:
Manual strapping tools offer several key benefits that contribute to enhanced packaging efficiency. Firstly, they improve load stability by securely holding packages together. This prevents items from shifting, reducing the risk of damage during handling and transportation.
Secondly, manual strapping tools provide a cost-effective solution for businesses. Compared to automated strapping machine, manual tools are more affordable, making them accessible to a wide range of companies, including small and medium-sized enterprises. Moreover, manual strapping tools do not require power sources, reducing energy consumption and operational costs.
Furthermore, these tools offer versatility and adaptability. They can be used with different types of strapping materials, such as polyester (PET) and polypropylene (PP) strapping rolls. This flexibility allows businesses to choose the most suitable strapping material based on their specific packaging requirements. Additionally, manual strapping tools are portable, enabling users to perform strapping tasks in various locations.
How Manual Strapping Tools Enhance Packaging Efficiency:
Manual strapping tools significantly enhance packaging efficiency through various mechanisms. Firstly, they facilitate quick tensioning and sealing of packages. The ergonomic design of these tools ensures ease of use and minimizes fatigue for users, allowing for swift and efficient strapping operations. This saves valuable time in the packaging process, enabling businesses to handle larger volumes of shipments within shorter timeframes.
Secondly, manual strapping tools provide reliable and consistent strapping. They offer adjustable tensioning settings, allowing users to apply the appropriate amount of tension based on the specific load requirements. This ensures consistent strapping across packages, regardless of their size or weight. The sealers and crimpers in these tools provide effective sealing methods, securing the strapping in place and preventing any loosening or unravelling during transit.
Lastly, manual strapping tools help reduce material wastage. Precise tension control ensures that only the necessary amount of strapping material is used, minimizing unnecessary waste. Proper sealing techniques eliminate the need for rework or additional strapping due to loose or ineffective seals, further reducing material consumption.
Conclusion:
Manual strapping tools offer a practical and efficient solution for businesses seeking to enhance their packaging efficiency. By utilizing hand-held tensioners, sealers and crimpers, or combination tools, companies can achieve improved load stability, cost-effectiveness, and versatility in their packaging processes. IT support
Summary : Henry found y/n trying to print something and her computer isn’t working . Henry is more then happy to help.
Pairing : henry cavil x yn
Warnings : fluff . Smut . Bad jokes .
Henry was always much better at computers then Y/n . But she was determined to do this herself . She was booking a holiday away for their anniversary and the stupid computer wasn’t printing and kept freezing .
“ I’m pressing print ! I’m literally clicking you stupid f-“ beep beep . “ Why are you beeping ? What the hell , stop beeping.” Y/n stood up and threw her hand in the air. She knelt down to go under the desk to figure out if something wasn’t connected.
“ This stupid machine .” Y/n didn’t notice that Henry was watching the entire thing . He was leaning against the door admiring her ass while she looked at the plugs . Y/n tried to stand up and hit her head on the desk then pulled some plugs out on there way out. She had tangled herself with plugs and was on the verge of a mental break down . Henry bent down to get a better look at yn .
“ Hello darling , need some assistance.” Henry said smiling at y/n .
Y/n huffed and looked up at Henry. She felt so defeated .
“ I’m trying to print something.” Y/n sighed.
“ Do you need help?” Henry asked.
“ It was supposed to be a surprise .” Y/n whispered .
“ How about this . You get out from under the table. I’ll sort out the computer. Then when we print out whatever you want to print , I will act surprised.” Henry smiled.
“My Hero.” Y/n forced a smile. She felt like she couldn’t do anything right. Henry could sense she was upset so he concocted a plan.
“ I am gonna need a favour from you though.” Henry said as he began working on the computer .
“ Sure. What is it?” Y/n said.
“ Can you check in the top drawer for the manual and then read out section 13 to me .” Henry asked . He stood up and noticed there was something wrong with main board. He knew exactly how to fix it without the manual but this way he could get y/n to watch and learn . They started working . Y/n handing Henry small tools and watching him work . It didn’t take long before he had fixed the computer and the printer started printing . In fact it wouldn’t stop printing.
“ My darling how many did you print.” Henry laughed .
“ I honestly have no idea.” Y/n laughed as she tried to stop them from printing . It took a few minutes but she cancelled all the other prints. Henry watched again in amusement when she screamed in excitement . Y/n stood up and smiled at Henry . She walked up to him and jumped up. Henry effortlessly lifted her up so he was carrying her. Y/n kissed Henry while smiling . Henry could feel her smile.
“ Are you gonna tell me the surprise?” Henry asked breaking the kiss.
“ I booked a villa in Italy for us . Very remote”-kiss- “private pool”- kiss- “ for our anniversary”. Yn said. Henry laughed .
“ We should really stop surprising each other . I booked suite in Paris .”kiss-“ Penthouse” -kiss- “ best view of Paris” - kiss-“ private hot tub” Henry moved yn to there bedroom . Y/n smiled as Henry lay her on their bed.
“ I know . I saw the booking. I booked for after that. “Yn smiled cheekily . Henry laughed, he should have known. They were awful at secret keeping . The kisses became hungrier and more urgent . Henry lay half on top of yn and put his hand on her hip. Gently digging his hand as the kiss became more passionate. Y/n moaned in Henry’s mouth . Henry moved his hand up to Y/n just below her bra strap. Y/n put one hand on his chest and the other in his hair . Tugging and digging to earn groans from Henry.
“Put your hands above your head.” Henry demanded. Y/n put her hands above her head.
“Good girl.” Henry said. He pulled down her pants leaving her in her underwear and used the pants to tie her hands. Y/n squirmed underneath Henry. Henry realised he hadn’t taken her top off yet and tied her hands up to quickly.
“My darling , how much do you like this shirt.” Henry said as his hand gripped the hem of her shirt. His thumb touching just above her underwear.
“I would like it more if it was on the floor.” Y/n whispered suggestively. This wasn’t the first time Henry got ahead of himself. Henry smiled and started ripping the bottom of the shirt . He ripped the front of the shirt and the sleeves to free y/n of her top. Y/n now in a bra and underwear.
“ Henry darling , you can’t rip the bra. It’s gonna have to stay on. Next time you need to be more patient.” Y/n laughed. Henry grunted in response . Henry took off all his clothes painfully slow . Y/n’s whole body felt like it was on fire. She could easily get out of the hold she is in but last time she did that Henry didn’t let her finish. She knows better now.
“ Henry please .” Y/n begged . Henry smirked and left the room. Y/n sighed and looked at the ceiling . A few moments later Henry was back in the room with a stack of papers.
“ Henry ? What is that?” Y/n asked.
“ Well these are all the things you printed. Let’s read them .” Henry sat down infront of yn and read the itinerary. He turned the pages and kept reading .
“ Henry it’s only two pages long , why are you reading all of them.” Y/n asked.
“ Well I don’t want to waste it. So I’m reading every single one of them.” Henry laughed.
“ Oh my gosh Henry please there’s like 30 pages.” Y/n groaned . Henry smiled but kept his eyes on the pages . Y/n started clenching her thighs together . Needing some relief . Then an idea popped into her head . Something she knew Henry could never ignore.
“ Henry, if you don’t come here now I will take matter into my own hands.” Y/n said. Henry knew what she was doing , he flinched but didn’t look up. Y/n got up hands till tied up on this time it was infront of her . She moved towards Henry , who still hadn’t looked up. Y/n put her tied up hands over his head and around his neck and sat on his lap.
“ You keep reading Henry.” Y/n whispered. Y/n positioned her self so she was riding one of his thighs. He was trying to ignore the moans. He could tell she was getting close. He threw the paper on the floor and grabbed y/n’s ass. He forced her to stop. He place her on his lap and moved her underwear to the side. He positioned himself inside of her and began thrusting. It was rough and animalistic. It was desperate. At some point they had moved to the bed. Henry had gone from hungry to loving . They went into waves of pleasure for hours. Both trying to prove to each how much love they had .
“ My dear y/n , why did you choose Italy.” Henry asked while holding Y/n.
“ The pasta .” Y/n responded . Henry laughed and kissed y/n in the forehead .
“ Ask me why I chose France.” Henry said .
“ Why did you choose France?” Y/n asked.
“ The pastry.” Henry asked. Both burst into laughter .
“ I could go anywhere with you , aslong as there is food.” Y/n whispered .
“ So a stranded island with no food is a definite no.” Henry asked.
“ Sorry I don’t love you enough. I need the food” Y/n laughed .
“ Don’t worry , I’ll find you something good to eat.” Henry winked . Y/n laughed and hit him in the shoulder.
“ Henry .” Y/n said while sitting up.
“ Yes”. He replied sceptically.
“ I can hear the printer again.” Y/n said motioning towards the door .
“ How many did you print?” Henry laughed.
“ I honestly have no idea.” Y/n smiled

Excerpt from the current draft of my novel, “Counterclockwise”
For anyone living on the outskirts of Rustvale, the Copperflame Lukas was an absolute necessity. Not only could the robot identify over five hundred different metallic substances; the Lukas was programmed to assemble lesser machines from blueprints downloaded into its code, detect valuable materials among piles of discarded scrap, and was equipped with an internal navigation system, allowing it to trek for miles without rest to places humans couldn’t journey to without needing days’ worth of food and water. Like all machines, the Lukas was built to serve humanity, putting an end to the days in which people had no choice but to scavenge for hours in piles of rusted metal for discarded parts, not to mention having to sift for the most valuable ones amid fears of infection or exhaustion. Civilization, perhaps, had advanced with the creation of the Copperflame Lukas- particularly in Rustvale, a city that had been built on the backs of more machines than men.
Oliver Kitt and his daughter Cecilia were a prime example of those such people who depended on the Lukas. It was evident in the tools they worked with, which the robot had been programmed to construct, the way they carried themselves whenever they went into town, and the way they rested easily every night, knowing they had the means to confidently assert that despite the modest conditions of their ramshackle bungalow, they knew where their next meal was coming from. The Lukas was a provider, bringing in their income along with the scraps and materials it returned home with every night, and in return, the Kitts maintained its gears and springs, allowing it to function for as long as it possibly could before the inevitable day where it would be gathered up and disassembled by the next, newer model of Lukas, of which Copperflame was already designing prototypes.
At the bottom of Oliver Kitt’s toolbox, underneath a mess of wrenches and screwdrivers, was an instruction manual, the same that had come with every Copperflame Lukas, although the manual had been updated with every new model. Each page of the manual contained some useful tidbit on the care and keeping of the robot- how to properly clean its rivets, or to program new information within its coding. Oliver Kitt would sometimes take this manual out of the toolbox and read it after dinner, smoking his pipe and basking in the reliability this manual contained, how it secured his very livelihood with its clear, practical technicalities. He had no need for newspapers, with their constantly-changing headlines that always concerned things he had no say in; the Lukas manual, by contrast, was as dependable as the machine it was written about, and a healthy reminder that the means of his livelihood were always under his control, unlike so many other things in his life had been.
“No matter how far its navigation system may lead it,” Oliver Kitt read aloud one evening as he sat in his rocking chair, reading the manual as he so often did, “your Copperflame Lukas will always be able to find its way home. That’s always reassuring, isn’t it, Cecilia?”
“Speaking of that,” his daughter said, looking up from tinkering with something at her worktable, the one the Lukas had constructed for her shortly after they had first activated it. She took her pocket watch from her breast pocket. “It’s getting late. It should be back by now, shouldn’t it?” She adjusted the strap that held her magnifying goggles atop her nose, allowing her a closer look at what she was working with, positioning the crook of her arm over the shapeless mass as to prevent her father from craning over her shoulder while she was working, as he had a habit of doing.
“What time is it?” Mr. Kitt asked.
“Seven fifteen. I believe we programmed it to be back by seven.”
“Are you sure? It’s-”
As if on cue, a bell rang outside their door, and Mr. Kitt opened it to see the very contraption they had been talking about. The rusted automaton, hardly the latest model but still diligent enough to avoid becoming scrap for at least another five years, stood in the doorway, its bronze shoulders weighed down by the sack that it was always handed before lumbering off to the scrapyards. Many years of scrapping had meant the robot’s structure had started to warp and bend out of shape, but it somehow remained capable of carrying almost as much as it had when it left the assembly line.
“It’s here,” Mr. Kitt called to Cecilia.
“Oh, good,” she answered, and went back to her work.
Mr. Kitt turned back to the robot. “Lukas,” he said, addressing it by the command word that allowed it to respond to his voice, “sort the haul from the scrapyards.”
“Sorting will commence,” the Lukas responded in its tinny, slightly warped voice. Copperflame wasn’t known for its voice box technology, and while the Lukas was equipped with many advancements for its time, its scratchy tone wasn’t one of them. “Ten kilos of low-grade iron, point-five meters of copper wiring, two kilograms of platinum alloy…” the Lukas droned, emptying the contents of its sack onto the ground before carefully arranging them by material and size.
“Only point-five meters of copper?” Cecilia asked, pulling her magnifying goggles on top of her head. “Of what quality?”
“Point-five meters of copper wiring of average quality,” the Lukas responded. “Can be extracted from damaged Copperflame Athena circuit boards.”
“What about the rest of the Athena?” Cecilia pressed. “Any data storage units?” While the Athena was an obsolete model, retired five years ago, it was still prized among scrap collectors for the mechanisms that allowed it to store and retain information, designed to hold more than any other Copperflame automaton until its replacement, the Sage, had come along. Sages hardly appeared in scrap piles, and the memory drives of Athenas, despite their lower quality, were much easier to wipe and transfer into other Copperflame products. Even if the Kitts had no use for an Athena storage unit for themselves, it would certainly fetch a decent price on the market- much more than a bit of copper wire could.
“No other components of the Copperflame Athena have been detected,” the Lukas answered.
Mr. Kitt lit his pipe. “Looks like we have competition, then. The other scrappers must be catching up to us; chances are, everything useful in that scrapyard has been salvaged, sold, and melted down before our Lukas can get to it. We should have known this would happen, especially around this time of year.” He took a long draw from the pipe, the smoke curling up into the rafters above them, bringing with it the faint scent of tobacco and cedar.
“The time of year has nothing to do with it; it was bound to happen sooner or later, you know,” Cecilia pointed out. “I’m willing to bet pretty much everyone in Rustvale has better Copperflames than we do; our Lukas has got to be at least ten years old by now. It’s severely outdated, and the new model Copperflame just announced has some significant upgrades- it can polish metals itself, appraise not just the quality, but also the prices of the materials it collects, has a far more sensitive detector, and-” she added pointedly- “a voice box that doesn’t make you want to tear your ears off every time it speaks-”
“We’re not replacing our Lukas until it breaks down,” Mr. Kitt interrupted. “You know we need to save money, and ours works just as well as any other machine out there. We just need to start sending it out earlier and make it work longer; the other scrappers won’t be able to take the parts we need if we get there in time first.”
“Soon enough, the other scrappers will have automatons with built-in weapons to sabotage models like ours,” Cecilia fired back, standing up from her desk. “Rumor has it they’re already selling on the black market; it’s only a matter of time before Copperflame decides it’s a big enough issue to release bots with heightened defense systems, or else they’ll have a lot of unsatisfied customers. Either we get an upgraded Lukas, or we modify this one, and I can’t modify it if I’m not getting the parts I need. So therefore, I say upgrading it is the only logical conclusion, unless you don’t want a Lukas at all. And what does that mean for our family- or should I say, what’s left of it? The Lukas isn’t the only thing here that’s just barely holding itself together, you know.”
“Cecilia,” Mr. Kitt said, the harshness in his tone rising, “you’re not going to bring that up. And furthermore, for the last time, we’re not modifying the Lukas. I told you; it’s fine as it is. You remember the last time you tried to upgrade it.”
Cecilia gasped. “I was a child,” she said. “I’m far more careful now.”
“I won’t hear of it,” Mr. Kitt decided. “We can’t risk getting the Lukas ruined. What do I always say about the Lukas?”
Cecilia pulled her goggles back on, returning to her desk. “We depend on it,” she muttered.
“And what does the instruction manual always say?”
“You’re seriously trying to parent me with the instruction manual for a robot?”
“Cecilia,” Mr. Kitt warned.
Cecilia gave a long sigh, one fist clenched around the pair of pliers she’d been holding. “The Lukas was built with reliability in mind.”
A cold animosity settled like a fog inside the little bungalow, the accumulating sense of quiet only interrupted by the Lukas’ tinny voice as it continued to sort the materials it had gathered. The Lukas, of course, had no idea what had just transpired, nor would it have cared to know if it had any awareness. Not that it had the capability to care, in any case; it simply did not occur to its manufacturers to equip it with such a trivial function as caring. It creaked on its rusted knees, the whirring and buzzing of its cooling fan especially loud against the silence that hung between Mr. Kitt and Cecilia. The piles of metal and glass and semiprecious stones were steadily growing larger and larger as the Lukas’ narrow fingers selected each one from the bag as it proceeded to list what sort of material each fragment was, along with its quality and size. It had no idea that it was the only thing holding the fragile familial relationship between the two humans together, or that Mr. Kitt was too ashamed to tell Cecilia why she had no mother, or that Cecilia resented her father for always dodging the question. The Lukas didn’t know how badly they needed its services, how the household would easily collapse without its tireless work. Its purpose concerned only scrap parts, and that was to be its only purpose until it rusted itself beyond usefulness and eventually broke down. Buzzing out the contents of its seemingly endless inventory, it continued to sort, completely oblivious to the fact that its fate was being discussed right in front of it.
When the Lukas was done sorting, as was the routine, Cecilia and Mr. Kitt carefully gathered each pile of materials, placing them into the drawers that lined one wall from floor to ceiling. Each drawer was labeled, with the ones for the largest materials on the bottom and the smallest materials on top, with some of them so full that they could barely close, and others containing only dust and the odd dead insect. Stacked haphazardly on top of one another, the drawers piled up to the ceiling, meaning the Kitts had to take turns using a stepping stool in order to reach the ones that were highest up, begrudgingly handing it between themselves without so much of a nod of acknowledgement. As angry as they were with each other, this task required cooperation. Cecilia refused to look her father in the eye when she took the stool from him, slamming a drawer shut with an audible thud after depositing a handful of screws in it. Mr. Kitt kept his back to her as he untangled a clump of wires. Occasionally, whenever each came across something that was no use to them, they put it back into the Lukas’ sack for it to return to the scrapyards the next time it arrived there.
Once the sorting was done, and the grandfather clock in the corner of the room coughed out a spluttering chime, Cecilia finally condescended to glance at her father, taking a deep breath before opening her mouth to speak.
“Look, I guess I see your point. All I’m saying is-” she began.
Mr. Kitt interrupted her. “It’s not a matter of discussion,” he said. “The Lukas is staying as it is. When it breaks down, then we can talk about getting a new model, but we’re going to get our money’s worth out of this one. It works just fine; Copperflame is always trying to convince people they need the latest upgrade of this or that automaton, but their old Lukases were made to last. When all the newer models inevitably begin to malfunction in a matter of months, if not weeks, it’ll be our Lukas that brings their parts home from the scrapyards, do you understand?”
Cecilia sighed. “Sure,” she said. “If it gets you to stop talking about it.”
Mr. Kitt shook his head, his eyes ringed with gray exhaustion. “Wash up for dinner,” he said. “I don’t want you working at your desk for too long; you forget to eat sometimes, and those goggles strain your eyes. I’ve already told you how I feel about you wearing them.”
“They’re fine,” Cecilia insisted, “and besides, they used to be yours, anyway.” Nevertheless, she got up from her desk, removing the goggles and dropping them on her desk. She paused before walking past the Lukas, examining the rust that gathered on its dull metallic body. She picked up its hand, wincing as its joints creaked, and turned back towards the drawers of parts from the scrapyard, opening one at eye-level, which was filled with nothing but spindly bronze digits.
“Cecilia,” Mr. Kitt warned.
She sighed, tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, and left the workroom. Mr. Kitt followed after her, leaving the Lukas standing amid the stacks of drawers and heaps of sawdust, its yellow eyes staring blankly at the mess that surrounded it, sheets of Cecilia’s sketches and stacks of overflowing toolboxes piled about its muddied feet. The Kitts, preoccupied by the stress that occupied their brains, had forgotten to power the Lukas off, but without any sort of command, it could do nothing but wait for them to return, even as its battery continued to drain.
The Lukas, at least, did not feel tired; it was not programmed to. Even if it had the capability to complain, as far as it knew, it had no reason to. Its thermometers read that the temperature in the workroom was cold- only three degrees Celsius, in fact- but this caused it no discomfort. It was true, the Lukas was not supposed to be kept for long in cold environments according to the instruction manual that Mr. Kitt so loved to read, and its worn metal legs would ultimately be slowed on the way to the scrapyards the following day, but it wasn’t bothered by this. If the Lukas had, for some inexplicable reason, been manufactured at the Copperflame factories with the capability to be bothered, bothered wouldn’t begin to describe what it would have been feeling. It would have been exhausted after spending all day at the scrapyards gathering parts that, as its artificial intelligence told it, were mostly worthless, and indignant at Mr. Kitt and Cecilia’s dissatisfaction at what it had brought back, despite the fact that it had salvaged all it could to the best of its ability, and bored of sorting through piles of worthless material, and furious that Mr. Kitt and Cecilia would think to openly discuss replacing it while it stood there working for them, and aggravated by their constant squabbling, and devastated that they would leave for the warmth of their tiny kitchen, leaving the Lukas to the mercy of the elements in the thinly-walled workroom.
It was, in a word, understandable, that Copperflame decided not to give the Lukas the option of being bothered.

Revolutionizing Packaging with Wire Strapping Machines in India
In today’s fast-paced industrial landscape, efficient packaging is crucial for businesses seeking to enhance productivity and ensure product integrity during transportation. Among the various packaging solutions available, wire strapping machines in India have emerged as an essential tool for industries looking to secure products effectively. This blog delves into the significance of wire strapping machines, their benefits, and why they are becoming increasingly popular in the Indian market.
What is a Wire Strapping Machine?
A wire strapping machine is a specialized piece of equipment designed to apply steel wire or plastic straps to packages, securing them tightly for safe storage and transportation. This machine utilizes a combination of tensioning, sealing, and cutting mechanisms to create a secure bond around the packaged goods. Wire strapping machines in India are commonly used in various industries, including manufacturing, logistics, and packaging, to ensure that products remain intact throughout the supply chain.
The Importance of Wire Strapping in Packaging
Enhanced Stability One of the primary reasons for using wire strapping is to provide stability to packaged goods. By applying a tight strap around the product, it prevents movement, ensuring that items do not shift during transit. Horizon: Rebuilt, Ch. 15
Horizon and Shawn picked over the wreckage they’d created. The snowmobiles had only sustained some minor damage, so at least they had new vehicles for themselves. Finding and disabling the transponders was the hardest part. Stripping the drivers yielded a couple pistols, survival knives, and insulated suits that didn’t fit either of them. The van was a complete loss, though some of the food and components Horizon had stolen could still be salvaged.
“I’m not sure what we could do with these motors,” Shawn commented as he sorted through the parts. He picked up the solid metal block, “this looks like a hard drive though. Where did you say you got these?”
“A vending machine,” Horizon stated. She picked up a half-melted protein bar. “All this was for a vending machine.”
Shawn sighed, the speakers on the power armor he wore amplifying the sound. “Well, the Company never was one to let the slightest bit of scrip slip through their claws.”
Sam appeared in front of the fading fire from the VTOL crash. “It’s unlikely such a dramatic response was prompted solely by the robbery. The Company probably identified you from security footage.”
“Of course they did,” the raccoon growled back. “They saw my suit give out.”
“Likely,” the AI conceded. “You should have stolen the security system instead of looting the vending machine.”
Horizon kicked a glob of snow at Sam. The AI didn’t even react as the snow passed through her hallucinatory avatar.
“I might be able to get something useful out of this,” Shawn interjected, holding up the drive. “You’d be surprised what data markets will buy.”
“Pack it up then,” Horizon sighed. She picked up what little food she could find, forced down the melted bar, and re-mounted her “new” snowmobile. “Maybe the VTOL will have something else we can salvage?”
“Maybe, yeah,” Shawn shoved the other snowmobile back onto its skis. It rocked almost onto its far side before he grabbed the handlebar in his powered gauntlet. When he released the bar, Horizon could see that it had bent.
Horizon shook her head in disbelief. “You got really lucky when you shot that VTOL down, didn’t you?”
“I fell over a lot,” the vole admitted. He reached up to his helmet and started to fumble with the release. “It might be best if I take it off now.”
She shrugged and walked over to help him remove the armor. Fortunately the Company’s exo-suits were designed for rapid egress and she got him free in a matter of moments. They packed the suit onto the back of Horizon’s snowmobile and zipped off towards the crashed gunship.
The two slowed as they saw the fire from the gunship’s fuel supply, Horizon could tell instantly from the shade of the flames that it was mostly hydrogen. The VTOL had landed on its side, crushing one of the rotating wings, from which a dim fire burned. She added ultraviolet light to her vision input and froze. A three-meter tall pillar of fire sprouted from the crushed wing of the gunship, searing the air around it.
Is it safe to approach? Horizon asked Sam.
“Analyzing,” the AI hummed as she took in the available data. “You should be safe so long as you keep to the intact side. I can’t say one way or another about the safety of the interior though.”
Horizon shrugged and stepped off of her snowmobile, switching the ignition off to save on fuel. She stopped, thinking about the hydrogen fire. If I remember correctly, the VTOLs used by the Friendlies had detachable fuel tanks in the wings. Is this one configured the same way?
“It’s a stock design used all over Surtur,” Sam replied. “It should be, but do you have the tools to remove it yourself?”
For safety the valve shutoff is manual, Horizon thought. She turned to the power suit strapped to the back of her vehicle and started untying it. After closing it I just need to rip it out.
The raccoon popped open the hatch on her suit and slipped inside, grateful that they had been afforded enough time to clean out the remains of the original occupant before they got kicked out of the Friendly Society. She felt a comforting warmth as she locked up her suit around her, she’d almost forgotten just how cold it was outside. The suit still moved more slowly than her enhanced body, but with her implant interfacing with the controls it went smoothly and the hindbrain represented by Samantha kept her from overshooting.
Carefully she strode slowly towards the gunship, scanning for threats, flipping between IR, UV and visible on a cycle. Horizon approached the uncrushed side of the aircraft, viewing the door in the infrared spectrum. The siding and handle appeared bright yellow, but still within her suit’s tolerances. She cautiously wrapped her mechanized hand around the handle, and pulled the manual release.
The hatch popped open, releasing a wave of heat that Horizon could feel even through her suit. She looked around for signs of movement, given how intact the craft was the possibility of survivors was strong. The floor of the main hold seemed to have dropped out save for a narrow bar spanning the length of the hold, the spaces it left were about the right size for the two snowmobiles they had stolen. In front was a small cabin with a single seat, slightly cocked from the impact with the ground. She saw a shadow shift on the far side of the pilot’s seat.
Horizon extended the stun baton on her suit’s right arm and stepped towards the cabin. She grabbed the back of the seat with her left hand and yanked it backwards, revealing the pilot. They wore a cracked polymer helmet that concealed their face, but blood dripped out of their neck. Horizon retraced her baton and took hold of their helmet in both hands, lifting it carefully off. She couldn’t tell whether she did that to make sure they were alive, or to ensure they were dead.
A white-furred feline face with small round ears and black markings lolled in front of her, bleeding from a few spots on their eyebrows and forehead. She tried to examine the figure for any signs of life. Sam, she asked after a cursory inspection. Are they alive?
“I don’t think so,” Sam replied. “Wait, there’s a slight breath but I doubt they’ll… Oh crap.”
What?! Horizon silently exclaimed.
Horizon’s vision zoomed in on one of the cuts on the feline’s forehead. Through the dense fur she could see a thin line of red crust slowly disintegrating to reveal smooth skin underneath. “They’re healing! This guy has military-grade leukosynths.”
They’re augmented? Horizon thought. How is this possible? What do we do?
“My best hypothesis is that the Company got hold of a Federation-era supply of nanotech,” the AI suggested. “The Company might have recovered enough samples of your leukosynths that they might have found a way to breed them, but it’s unlikely. In either case catastrophic brain trauma should be enough to kill them permanently.”
Horizon extended her baton again and slammed it down on the pilot’s face, cracking their muzzle and opening more blood vessels but it didn’t seem like enough to kill them. She slammed the baton down again and again, until she heard their skull crack. Then she turned away, grabbed a survival bag off the wall and threw it outside, and exited.
She yelled “get that!” to Shawn and turned to the wing. The fuel tank was hidden underneath a black-painted aluminum panel that she almost missed, but with her cybernetically and suit-enhanced vision the hinges were readily apparent. Horizon dug her suit’s fingers into the seam and ripped it free, revealing the removable tank. Thank archons for corporate standardization.
“What happened in there?” Shawn called as he grabbed the survival bag and hauled it off to his snowmobile. “Is it going to explode or something?”
“No,” Horizon replied. “The team might not be dead yet. We need to clear out before they pick themselves back up.”
“What do you-” the vole stopped as he realized what she was saying. “You don’t think they have implants do you?”
“I didn’t just shatter the pilot’s skull for nothing,” Horizon retorted. She closed the double valve on the fuel line feeding out of the tank. “At least one of these guys had leukosynths.”
She grabbed the handles on the tank with both hands and pulled. At first it didn’t budge but as her suit’s motors strained the locks cracked and the pipeline twisted. Then with one last wrench the tank came free. The end of the pipe came free with the tank as Horizon staggered back.
“RUN!” Sam warned. Horizon looked up at the wing she’d removed the tank from, and saw that both valves had been torn free. Meaning that the fuel inside the line was leaking free into the air. She turned and raced off towards the snowmobiles.
An explosion sounded behind Horizon, rocking her with its shockwave. She felt chunks of debris bounce off her back and shoulder, but they didn’t penetrate her armor. As she staggered over she glanced down at the tank, suddenly worried that it might have ruptured. She scanned it in IR, and it read as cold as the surroundings.
“You okay?” Shawn shouted out, already revving up his snowmobile with the survival pack strapped to the back.
“Yes,” she replied. Horizon laid the fuel tank on the back of the other snowmobile and started pulling straps over it. “Get going, I’ll catch up.”
Shawn sped off into the distance and Horizon locked the straps into place. She turned to take one last look at the latest disaster caused by the entities chasing her. The wreck of the tilt-rotor craft was left in tatters, flames spilling out of countless holes in the fuselage and wings. She doubted anyone could have survived that now, even with leukosynths.
Still, there were the other two, the snowmobile drivers. They’d been left stripped in the snow after she’d broken their neck or filled them with bullets. But if they were augmented…
Horizon turned her snowmobile towards the battlefield. Quickly she came upon the corpse of the first trooper, the one she’d pounced upon. He laid face-down upon the snow, a white-furred hare with small ears, head bent at almost a right angle. She gave him a quick look-over and confirmed that he wasn’t moving before moving on. Just as she began to rev up the engine again she saw movement from the direction of the remaining trooper.
Her vision switched to infrared, revealing a figure glowing in yellow and red, burning hotter than a normal body. Almost reflexively Horizon fired both the carbine on her snowmobile and the gun mounted on her suit’s shoulder. Hot streams of blood flowed out of the trooper’s torso and head, jerking as if on strings, then he collapsed.
She turned back to the trooper with the broken neck, he still wasn’t moving but she aimed her shoulder cannon at his head regardless. Horizon hesitated before sending the trigger signal, it didn’t seem right to shoot a helpless enemy, even if they were already dead. And was there even a reason to? The VTOL had doubtlessly been transmitting as it went down, it was already too late to start silencing the witnesses.
Horizon left the incapacitated Company trooper behind, eager to leave the scene before reinforcements finally arrived.
---
She spent the better part of an hour driving back and forth across the landscape, creating false trails for the Company to follow, driving over her own tracks so many times. Eventually Horizon was satisfied with the misdirection she’d created and headed home.
The campsite was hidden in a small valley twenty kilometers from the outpost where she’d been spotted. A small tear-down habitat dome was buried under almost a meter of snow, with a garage nearby made from a prefab shed that was big enough to hide the van that had just been destroyed. She stopped three meters from the door to the garage and dismounted to check the interior. With a glance the door slid open and Horizon breathed a sigh of relief, the other snowmobile was inside and unpacked, with plenty of room now that the van was gone. She pulled in her snowmobile and shucked out of her exo-suit, hanging it in its improvised rack. After setting the new hydrogen tank well away from any of the vehicles Horizon headed for the dome.
After entering through the “airlock” doors and shaking the snow off her boots Horizon found Shawn sitting in front of the heater using his laptop. The vending machine hard drive that she’d stolen sat on the floor next to him with a cable from his laptop plugged into the side. His head swung towards her as she opened the inner door, eyes wide and ears raised, but relaxed as he realized it was her.
“Did you lose them?” he inquired.
Horizon nodded. “I’m pretty sure we should be good for now, but we should make plans to move again.”
“Already?” Shawn replied. “We’ve only been here for a couple weeks…” he remembered the events of the day and sighed. “Okay yeah, we should get moving soon. But I found something on this drive that we should extract first.”
“What is it?” Horizon turned her head curiously.
“It’s the vending machine’s digital wallet,” he explained. “And it’s using the old software, this thing hasn’t been updated in years.”
The raccoon peered over the vole’s shoulder at the screen, it showed a progress bar on his cracking program, only at 17%. “How much money do you think is in it?” she inquired.
“For security reasons they have armored cars physically visit these machines and both collect their sacs and install updates,” Shawn replied. “If nobody’s bothered to visit this machine there could be thousands on it.”
Horizon glanced aside and visualized Sam’s avatar, see, she thought. He’s useful after all.
“That remains to be seen,” the AI retorted.
