Astro Observations - Part 2
🍂 Scorpio Rising: Walking Transformers
Scorpio rising individuals are like walking transformers, constantly evolving and adapting. Their intense and magnetic presence often leads them through cycles of transformation, allowing them to shed old skins and emerge stronger. This rising sign is all about embracing change and using it as a powerful tool for personal growth.
🧱 Capricorn Builders and Fixers
Capricorn placements, particularly rising, sun, and Mars, are natural builders and fixers. They have a knack for creating stable structures in their lives. However, when emotions run high, there's a risk of inadvertently breaking what they've built. It's crucial for Capricorns to balance their practical side with emotional awareness to maintain harmony.
🌬️Virgo: The Natural Caretaker
Virgos are the zodiac's natural caretakers and nurturers. They have a deep love for good communication and thrive in environments where clarity and understanding are prioritized. Their attention to detail and desire to help others make them invaluable friends and partners.
🎭 Pluto in Aquarius: A Creative Revolution
With Pluto moving into Aquarius, we're entering an era where more resources will be allocated to creatives. If you have Aquarius placements—rising, sun, moon, Uranus, Neptune, or Pluto—brace yourself for rapid changes. Aquarius and its ruler, Uranus, govern quantum physics, signaling a time of innovation and breakthroughs.
🚨 The Critical 29°: A Time of Change
The critical 29° in astrology can feel like a period of annoyance or tension, but it's truly a precursor to new beginnings. It's often referred to as the "anaretic degree," symbolizing the end of a cycle and the start of something fresh. Embrace this energy as an opportunity for transformation and growth.
1️⃣ First House Year: Embracing Self
When you're in a first house year, it's all about embracing your true self and balancing your relationship with others. This is a time to focus on self-discovery and personal development. Remember the mantra, "Be Kind!"—both to yourself and those around you.
🔦 Leo: Lighting Up Dark Spaces
Leos with prominent placements—Sun, rising, Venus, and Pluto—are natural beacons of light. They possess a radiant energy that can illuminate even the darkest spaces. Their charisma and warmth draw people in, making them natural leaders and influencers. However, it's important for Leos to use this light responsibly, ensuring they uplift others rather than overshadow them.
🌓 Cancer: Emotional Tyrants or Agents of Chaos?
Cancer placements—Sun, Mars, Saturn, and Pluto—are deeply emotional and sensitive. Without a productive outlet, these emotions can lead to chaos or tyrannical behavior. It's crucial for Cancers to channel their feelings into creative or constructive activities, such as art, writing, or nurturing relationships, to avoid becoming overwhelmed by their emotional depth.
🔌 Aquarius: The Pitfall of Detachment
Aquarius is known for its intellectual detachment, which can be both a strength and a pitfall. While this detachment allows for objective thinking and innovation, it can also lead to emotional distance. Aquarians should be mindful of using this detachment constructively, especially towards self-reflection and personal growth, to avoid alienating themselves from others.
🦋 Scorpio: Embracing Change for Evolution
For Scorpios, change is not just inevitable—it's essential. Embracing transformation allows Scorpios to evolve and reach their full potential. By letting go of what's no longer serving them, they can harness their innate power to regenerate and thrive, emerging stronger and more resilient.
🚵🏽♀️ Sagittarius: The Quest for Greatness
Sagittarius often aspires to be the biggest and the best, driven by a desire for adventure and exploration. However, this quest can lead to self-sabotage if they become too self-centered. When Sagittarians realize that not everything revolves around them, they often undergo profound spiritual transformations, leading to greater wisdom and understanding.

By now, the suburbs’ origin story seems familiar. In the mid-twentieth century, the federal government and its chosen mass developers, like Levitt and Sons and American Home Builders, plowed colossal financial resources and political will into building new towns across the country. Each was situated beyond city boundaries and was accessible primarily by cars navigating freshly laid highway asphalt. The developers divided suburban towns into fractions of an acre. On each sat a freestanding house designed for two parents and two or more children, a lawn to show a neat face, and a driveway for a car manufactured by General Motors, Ford, or Chrysler. The suburbs tied these standard model homes and families to strong local schools. Together, modest shelter, steadily increasing in value, and favorable education promised flourishing futures for both parents and children. For the young, white families who were able to access low-cost mortgages that subsidized their moves, the clapboard and concrete sealed in the promise.
Of course, the suburbs never delivered the sanctuary they pledged, even for those people they were supposed to favor, and less so with each passing decade. This well-recognized slippage between suburbia’s polished surface and its dark emotional core itself spawned a film genre that flourished in the 1990s and early 2000. Those movies erupt in horror, disgust, or dark humor as they peer through the suburbs’ fraying assurances. Early in American Beauty, 2000’s best picture and best screenplay Oscar winner, beleaguered wife and real estate agent Carolyn Burnham (played by Annette Bening) strips off her tailored beige power suit to squeegee grimy windows, dispel dust bunnies, and buff worn kitchen tile, all while intoning her mantra, “I will sell this house today!” When, plaster-smiled, she greets her potential purchasers—a mixed white-Asian couple, a Black couple, and a lesbian couple—they slide secret sideways glances, stare perplexedly, and outright demand that Carolyn justify the illusion she is struggling to sell them.

What’s So Wrong With Having Heroes?
When I was a little kid, I wanted to be a doctor or a veterinarian. I wanted to help heal. And even as a small child, it felt like my calling.
Most kids dream of becoming a hero. The firefighters, the builders, the astronauts. The one’s who get medals and standing ovations. There’s many very monetarily successful movies and comics about all the superheroes we dream of. The people we want to save us. At one point, I thought I could be a hero. I wanted to be.
Being a hero wasn’t an issue for me though. People started to notice acts of kindness in me, and when they held that in high regard, I did too. I did everything I could to help others. It came naturally.
I bandaged my siblings and pets and strangers up. I gave advice like a wise old man, my aunt thanked me for helping her to leave her abusive husband when I was 8. I saved two people from drowning when I was 10. I talked friends out of suicide a dozen times. I became a street medic. I have saved dozens of lives, often under extraordinary circumstances. By definition, I fit the one for ‘hero’.
And I have so many issues with it. This isn’t a humble brag.
I genuinely think that we, as a society, put certain people on pedestals that shouldn’t be. I don’t think anyone should be. The hierarchy of heroes is inequitable and unrealistic. I think we should do the right thing because it’s the right thing, not to win an award or a badge of honor.
I see headlines all the time that are just ‘hero firefighter does their job!’. They’re paid to do this, of course they’re going to do it. As an abolitionist, I see cops hailed as heroes, usually for doing the objectively right thing, and it seems to magically erase the realities of what they do, the systemic harm they perpetuate. It’s the entirety of the ‘there’s some good cops’ narrative. And it causes great detriment to our communities because it makes it seem like the police do more good than bad.
Society particularly loves to paint white, cishet, abled, rich, educated, affluent men as heroes. The ones who can save us. Our hero.
And yet we ignore the people who are saving lives left and right, like people who use drugs who Narcan their friends. Or trans youth who stay up all night with their suicidal friends. Or the street medics who set up civilian ambulances for their under-served and neglected communities.
No one’s giving them medals.
Beyond that, people aren’t checking in on heroes. I’ve heard “you’re incredible!” and “thank you” a million times, but rarely do people genuinely check in on me after I’ve rescued someone.
And I usually need it. I’m at my worst mentally and usually physically after a rescue. It often takes months or years to process those events— they are traumatic for the rescuer too. Especially those of us without formal training or those of us who have attempted to rescue someone and lost them. We’re left to drift among all of these confusing and conflicting emotions, sometimes never understanding why.
The worst thing I hear: “I could NEVER do what you did”. It breaks me apart every time.
I don’t want to be doing this alone. I don’t want to have to save people over and over. I can’t save everyone.
I have to repeat that last one like a mantra sometimes.
I can’t save everyone. And so often, I still try to. I jump in without thinking. I throw myself into danger and worry about myself last, or, never. And it usually ends with me being seriously injured.
When I’d bandage up my siblings and pets it was after our parents hit us. I stepped in front of them as often as I could. I swallowed so much water while trying to save someone from drowning because they kept pulling me under that I puked. My 20-something-year-old boyfriend I dated when I was 16 stabbed me with the knife I had just talked him out of cutting himself with. He went on to keep caving my face in and choking me until I was blue. And of course, I’ve been seriously injured dozens of times during rescues. My body physically hurts so much afterwards, let alone the emotional toll.
I have to wonder: What would happen if I didn’t step in? Would it be so bad?
But of course, my brain always answers with a thousand of the worst case scenarios— or, just with what happened anyways. Sometimes people die no matter how much you try to fight to save them. And that has to just be what it is.
I think sometimes people live, and that just has to be what it is too.
But when we ascribe people as heroes, the message we send is that some people are heroes, some people aren’t. And I feel so strongly that this isn’t true. I believe that everyone has the capacity to help others, and so often, they do so in seemingly insignificant ways, and their deeds are not recognized.
Small acts of kindness are never small.
Life saving happens in everyday, ordinary ways. Sometimes what has saved my life has been something the other person will never remember or know. The Christmas cards from the elementary schoolers sent to the homeless shelter I lived at. The partners and friends who sat with me until I was safe on my own. My friends who held my hand as my heart beat dangerously fast, their presence being all I could feel, replacing the tightness in my chest. My cat cuddling me, purring until she snores. Strangers holding doors, strangers carrying my groceries, strangers checking on me. The dozens of items from my Amazon wishlists that have kept me alive.
I wish I could say how thankful I am to the community that’s kept me alive. How every time they’ve called me a hero, it’s because they made me possible. That they’re a hero just as much as I am.
I read ‘Mutual Aid: Building Solidarity During This Crisis (And The Next)’ by Dean Spade recently. In it, Dean describes “leader-less and leader-full” movements. It’s exactly what we need in the world. Hero-less and hero-full communities. We don’t need a select few— we need communities and societies structured around giving care. We need it to be standard, not extraordinary.
Personal responsibility can lead to community responsibility. We could have thriving, beautiful communities where we all care for each other so fully that no one single person is a savior, because we are all uplifted equitably.
I urge everyone I know to be more like the heroes they uplift. To think about what values they hold in high regard in others and to apply them to their own actions. To be what they already are, and acknowledge it.
You’re included.

As Russia’s war against Ukraine approaches its third winter, there is still no end in sight. The drip feed of Western military aid is enough for Ukraine to keep fighting but insufficient to liberate all its territory. At the same time, despite continued popular support for Kyiv’s cause in Western countries, there is plenty of talk about Western war fatigue, with increasing behind-the-scenes debate about a possible compromise to end or freeze the war.
A compromise would be premature for a number of familiar reasons. First, neither side is ready for serious negotiations. Regaining control over Ukraine may not be existential for Russia’s survival, as Russian President Vladimir Putin has claimed, but it could very well become a matter of life and death for Putin himself. For Ukraine, the fight is existential, and Western leaders have said again and again that it is for Ukraine to decide when to negotiate and on what conditions. That mantra is flawed, however, since we already know that Ukraine wants to keep fighting. By holding back on crucial weapons deliveries, Western countries are partly responsible for Ukraine not advancing as fast as it and its supporters would wish.
Second, violence in Russian-occupied territories will not stop as long as these territories remain under Moscow’s control. Freezing the conflict is therefore a non-starter for the Ukrainians who have seen the horrors perpetrated by Russians in Bucha, Irpin, and countless other towns and villages. This is well understood by Ukraine’s neighbors, which have their own experience of Russian and Soviet occupation. It means living under fear, unfreedom, and the constant threat of violence.
These arguments against seeking a settlement any time soon will be familiar to readers following the war. Less discussed—but much more fundamental for all of Europe—is what a settlement would mean for the future European security order. If the war were frozen, not only would Russia be rewarded for its attack. It would also hold on to its goal of fundamentally revising the European security order and reestablishing its sphere of influence.
It should be very clear that Moscow’s understanding of the principles and norms of European security is incompatible with Western views. As we can see in Ukraine, the Kremlin equates security with control, which has deep roots in Russian history and foreign policy. This is unlikely to change in the foreseeable future.
The tradition of Russia as a land-hungry empire goes back in a straight line to medieval Muscovy, which transformed into an expansionist state under the rule of Ivan the Terrible in the 16th century. Ivan, also known for his cruelty in torturing and massacring his own people, has been rehabilitated and celebrated under Putin’s rule, while Putin himself has adopted another torture-loving Russian empire builder, Peter the Great, as his role model.
Another key Russian foreign-policy tradition is the idea that the European security order should be based on agreements among the major powers over the heads of smaller ones. Since 2014, the Kremlin has repeatedly made references to the Congress of Vienna, which redrew the map of Europe in the early 1800s, and the Yalta Conference, the British-Soviet-U.S. meeting in February 1945 that divided Europe into two spheres of influence. From the Russian perspective, both agreements laid the foundation for decades-long stability. The price of that stability, however, is painfully known to the countries affected by Russian domination. The Vienna agreement wiped Poland off the map as a sovereign state for a century, and Yalta doomed half of Europe to more than 40 years of Soviet occupation and totalitarian rule.
Europe’s post-Cold War order has brought unprecedented levels of freedom, sovereignty, and prosperity to Russia’s western neighbors. Most of the former Eastern Bloc countries used their sovereignty to make a decisive turn to the West. Among the former Soviet republics, the Baltic states’ Western turn was fast and determined; Ukraine, Georgia, and Moldova tried to follow later and are still struggling for the right to choose their future place in Europe, including membership in the European Union. The EU’s decision-making structures underpin a fundamentally different order compared with being part of a Russian-controlled zone: The bloc gives substantial power to smaller states, even as members delegate some aspects of sovereignty to supranational institutions. Staying in the gray zone between Russia and the EU, as Ukraine has done, proved to be the least stable option.
Russia never felt comfortable with post-Cold War developments in European security. It frequently complained about not being treated as an equal by the West—yet Russia’s and Europe’s definitions of equality are very different. For Russia, it means being on par with other great powers, notably the United States, and not with its sovereign neighbors, whose agency it has consistently denied. Because it does not see them as equals, Moscow also has little interest in what Berlin or Paris has to say, let alone Brussels. That clouds every aspect of how Russia views its neighbors. When hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians took to the streets during the 2004 Orange Revolution to protest against their corrupt and dishonest government—and again during the Maidan Revolution in late 2013 and early 2014—all Moscow could see was a supposed U.S. plot to weaken Russia.
In 2009, then-Russian President Dmitry Medvedev proposed a new European security treaty in an attempt to defend what Russia considered its legitimate security interests, now allegedly being trod on by the West. Using code language such as “indivisibility of security,” what Moscow really seemed to seek was to confine NATO to the Cold War-era West and gain veto right over the alliance’s decisions if Russia considered them contrary to its very different definition of security.
In December 2021, as Russian forces were massing to invade Ukraine, the Kremlin made a renewed attempt to promote its vision of a European security order in two documents addressed to NATO and the United States. This time the ambiguity was gone and the revisionist aims clear: a full restoration of Moscow’s Cold War-era sphere of influence and the pushback of NATO’s presence in Europe to the line before its eastward expansion in the 1990s. These aims remain unchanged and reflect Russia’s long-term strategic thinking. Western efforts since the Cold War to build a common European order with Russia have clearly failed.
If Russia achieves its strategic goal of reestablishing control over Ukraine, even in part, it will ratify Russia’s efforts to impose its vision of order on its European neighbors. But even if Russia is defeated and has to leave all occupied territories in Ukraine, it will not easily give up its centuries-old understanding of itself as an empire and major power entitled to privileged rights in its sphere of influence. Unlike some empires that were wound down in the past—such as Nazi Germany and imperial Japan—Russia will not be totally defeated. It will not be occupied by foreign powers or be forced to go through a profound system change. Russia’s imminent transformation to a status quo power that accepts its post-Cold War place in Europe, let alone further enlargement of the EU and NATO, is therefore unlikely.
Former U.S. National Security Advisor Zbigniew Brzezinski famously argued in the 1990s that Russia cannot be an empire without Ukraine. Russian propagandists claim that Russia can only exist as an empire or not exist at all. Rejecting this claim will be an essential precondition for a post-imperial Russia to emerge.
Another precondition will be for Russia to acknowledge its neighbors as sovereign states and not mere puppets doing Washington’s bidding. Where the Kremlin—echoed by so-called realists in the West—is profoundly wrong with regard to its Ukraine war is the idea that world history is written by the major powers. If that were true, the Baltic states, Finland, Poland, and Ukraine would have no reason to exist today as sovereign states. One of the big unintended consequences of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is that it has demonstrated and strengthened the agency of Russia’s neighbors. A new power bloc in NATO now stretches from Scandinavia to the Black Sea. Poland and Ukraine are becoming leading military powers in Europe. Their contribution to European defense will be much needed in coming years and decades.
We should not expect a common understanding between the West and Russia on European security to emerge anytime soon—and certainly not as part of a negotiated agreement that would at least partially reward Russia for its dismemberment of Ukraine. It is therefore necessary to envisage a future European security order not with Russia but against it, aimed at deterring further Russian threats and defending European democracies against the Kremlin’s authoritarian, revisionist, and imperialist ambitions.
This would be a dual order similar in some ways to the Cold War era. Then, Western democracies created their own liberal rules-based structures, notably NATO and the EU, while pursuing a containment policy against the Soviet Union and engaging in ideological, economic, military, and technological competition with the Eastern Bloc. Such a new European order would, however, be inherently unstable, not least because the global context has profoundly changed since the Cold War. The United States’ commitment to European security is undermined by both domestic political turbulence and a geostrategic environment where the main U.S. competitor is now China, not Russia. At the same time, the world is no longer bipolar but has multiple competing and interconnected centers of power.
In spite of these changes, the future European order will most likely be characterized by a long-term Russian threat and an antagonistic relationship with Moscow, much as during the Cold War. Russia will continue to reject a new balance of power that shrinks its former Soviet and tsarist sphere of influence, while the West will continue to reject the very principle of spheres of influence. Russia would seek to revise the balance of power as soon as it rebuilds its military capability. In order to make the new order in Europe more sustainable, the West will need to pursue a proactive containment policy, including credible deterrence and defense, full integration of Ukraine and other countries in NATO and the EU, and restrictions on Russia’s ability to restore its military strength.
No matter where one stands on negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, the fundamental question of Europe’s future security order cannot be ignored.

"You have a lot to answer for!" “Do I? For what? Your greed? Curiosity? You came here on your own, no one held a gun to your head.“
"Might as well of put that collar on yourself."
"Unless you come down here, I'll destroy the vault and everything in it!" Roy's white knuckled, body broken, beaten, he feels so angry and raw like an exposed nerve. Doesn't think he's ever been in a worse situation than this, backed into a corner waiting for the next strike down. It made him feel like a child again, in the worst ways that he thought he buried deeper than his mother’s grave. So he threatens, plays his last hand, his ONLY gamble that he's got left. "No... I don't think so, It'd most likely trigger the other security measures...if you hurt the vault at all. The builder of this casino built it to last, the Sierra Madre withstood the war. I'm sure the vault is protected as well. Besides, you wouldn't have followed the signal if you didn't want this places secrets for your own, you're curious, past the threats." The voice booms, commanding and snide, Roy flinches when the older man speaks, like a wound being pulled open slowly, methodically. Roy's knees buckle under the weight, the PRESSURE of it all. "Forget the vault, the elevator is only a single control box." He responds back, he knows enough to fuck this shit up, he thinks. If he doesn't well he can just bluff right? Anything to just buy him sometime to THINK...god fuck, Roy THINK. He can't, his head is throbbing, so many wounds, but the others are depending on him, hell he's depending on himself, he's going to fucking die here after everything. "The elevator. Then you'd be trapped for certain, no probability of escape." Roy knew that, knew this was a bad hand he was dealt, but...if he was going to die here then he'd spite this bastard. "Throwing a wrench into the works is what I do best." Roy responds back, letting out a laugh, it's pained and he doesn't really find this situation funny, he wants to cry. For the first time in a long time he wants to just SOB, he always thought he'd break before he'd bend and oh god is he breaking. "Even... if you damaged the mechanism...there's a chance of repairing it. It might take years...but it's possible. Persist in threatening me... or the Sierra Madre's secrets, you're of no use to me I'll set off the collar now." The voice booms again, reminding him of his short leash, his collar. Roy hadn't forgotten, how could he with a beeping reminder every time he'd do something, anything WRONG. "I'll clip the wires to this intercom, and then the Pip-Boy." Roy's voice doesn't wavier, even if his body is, he refuses to, refuses to die without a fight even if he can hardly stand right now. He's so glad he didn't bring Rex here, so scared to think he might not ever see his friend. If he doesn't get to say goodbye...would Rex think he abandoned him? Could New Vegas and the strip move on without him? Fuck, fuck, fuck! "Huh, clever. Whoever designed the Sierra Madre... their obsession with messing with frequencies and signals...I'm coming down, I'll meet you face to face at the vault entrance. If you resist, I'll use the collar, even if it puts the vault at risk." The way the man speaks, it was...Roy thought it HAUNTING. Like the ghosts in this godforsaken hotel. Where was Lady Luck now? Was this his only shot? Roy panics for a brief moment, like a dog not knowing where to hide when its master is coming to reprimand it. Roy chokes back the tears threatening to spill, hand grasping a heavy golden bar-- he needed something, anything at all...he was always so good with his hands. Roy moves around the pylon in the middle of the room, he's got to hide, got to wait until that bastard is moving around the corner to come see him. Forget the gold, forget everything here but getting back home. 'I won't leave them...I won't abandon them...' He repeats in his head like a mantra, no a prayer that this works...
Then he spots him, and oh god does Roy feel the RAGE bubbling up, like bile; he thinks it's so red hot that he might puke. Benny mad him angry, made him stupid (more than usual) in a lot of ways, he thinks about in retrospect...but at the end of the day Benny was just a man, much like The Courier, a man Roy could understand...but Elijah? No he was a MONSTER, the kind of man that scared even the Mojave Boogeyman. Roy attacked, teeth clenched into a snarl, maw gaping when the first strike hit, he could feel the splatter against his hand, feel it SLICK against the gold. Roy wants to scream, wants to say something anything to make Elijah feel like he felt, beat him down, break him down, TWIST his bones until he feels the crunch into flesh. Roy doesn't have time, he's already used too much, he hears the beeping--oh fuck, oh fuck, NO.
Roy turns on his heels and tries to run out the door, if he can just be quick enough-- he can do this, he can make it out ALIVE IN ONE PIECE. Then he's pulled back and there's a laugh, like the DEVIL HIMSELF was d r a g g i n g him back into HELL. The beeping is LOUDER, FASTER.
"You... think you've out smarted me? You can't get away, you're the one on a leash, always were."
There's got to be no time left now, but Six gives way to one hard PULL, he's stronger than the DEVIL HIMSELF, at least physically-- then he's outside the vault, as if it's all over, as if it never happened, oh fucking god he's free. He's Free...HE'S FREE. Roy knows how that guy back in Nipton felt. He motions to cradle his face in his arms as he slumps onto the ground, dropping the gold bar as he does so that's in his right hand, he can't stand he's going to be sic--oh. His arm is gone. Roy stares for what feels like hours, it's only seconds, he SCREAMS. His voice howling into the night like a grief he's never felt. He's SOBBING. This is...this is all so much, too much. Then he's LAUGHING, like it's a joke even though his face is affixed into a tragedy. "I HOPE YOU CHOKE ON THAT GOLD ASSHOLE, YOU CAN FUCKING SHOVE IT YOU GODDAMN PRICK." He screams, voice cracking and choking out his words, the others gather around him.
He doesn't remember much, just a crushing agony deep in his chest-- they tell him the hardest part is letting go, they tell him he should leave the gold, that nothing good came from it. He thinks that's all a bunch of bullshit...he let go of more than ANYONE, for THEM. So Roy takes the gold back with him, stares at it long and hard when they've stopped the bleeding enough for him to drag himself back to the Lucky 38. And after all that's said and done? He listens to the radio, searching for an old song, his favorite one. 743.00Hz ULF "Heh… now, come on, you open up. Open up, damn you. Open the vault…! I can make it worth your while, think about what you're throwing away. I have other weapons, other technology I can share with you. The collars… the collars were a mistake, I see that now. Why would I kill you? After all you've done… after all we've done together. Are you listening to me?! Everything down here, I-I Swear, so much you could see! You could rule the wastes with what's down here, make your own army, re-shape the world, and if others disagree… put collars on them, I can show you how. Don't you leave me here! You can't do this to me! Must be someone… maybe that other courier, one with the flag on his back… maybe… no… no, said he'd never come to the Sierra Madre…No way out. Can't… can't end like this."
"You. I know you can hear me. When you die, Courier… I'll be waiting. Your grave's going look just like this vault." If hell is real, if it's a vault in that hotel waiting for him, he'll make sure to flick off the guy waiting for him there, one golden gilded finger waiting for the DEVIL too.

2022 Year in Review/Writing and Hobby Goals 2023
No sooner did 2022 start than I blinked and now it’s 2023. The biggest thing that came out of 2022 was the realization during a professional conference that I still enjoyed the type of work I was doing, but that I had to finally leave the job that was causing so much stress and anxiety. And so I did. I started a new job on October 31, and it’s been such a better environment for me so far (just got to do my best from becoming my own worst stress/anxiety inducer). Between that and fingers crossed trying to buy my own home, I’m looking forward to this new year.
I successfully met my word count goal for 2022 (primarily in part to Hippo Creativity Challenges :D), over 25,000 with just my posted works, and between 30,000 - 35,000 including work on unposted works. I posted two Ellana/Blackwall ficlets (1, 2), two Jane/Garrus ficlets (1, 2), and two Builder/Aadit one-shots (1, 2). Writing Portia fic was such a fun change, and with the release of the sequel My Time at Sandrock, I have plans to write more in this universe. I also went back to my original fiction and started re-outlining and planning, which was so fun to go back to a world that had its roots to stories I wrote in middle school.
I surpassed my reading goal, reading the most books in a year in some time at 30. Favorites included the Hell’s Library trilogy (AJ Hackwith), Diaries of Alan Rickman (RIP always), A Memory Called Empire (Arkady Martine), A Winter’s Promise (Mirror Visitor Quartet 1, Christelle Dabos) and last but not least four T. Kingfisher novels (Swordheart, The Seventh Bride, Clockwork Boys, and The Wonder Engine) that I absolutely adored and inspired me to go back to try writing original fic again.
While I didn’t get to many of the games on my 2022 list, there were new ones that I found so rewarding and fun to play, including Lake, Kena - Bridge of Spirits, Stray, My Time at Sandrock, Dysmantle, and Disney Dreamlight Valley.
Now on to my primary writing and hobby goals for 2023!
2023 Primary Writing Goals:
25,000 words (bonus 50,000 words)
Jane/Garrus, Ellana/Blackwall, and Builder/Owen (My Time at Sandrock) ficlets
Bills (Stardew Valley one-shot with farmer Annabelle/Harvey)
A Surprise Visit (post My Time in Portia main quest; Builder/Aadit)
Time will again be the joy it once was (DAI)
Girl refugee on docks in ME3 and Shepard clone one-shots
Shepard personal logs (ME1-3)
Inheritance (original fiction planned trilogy)
Experiment with writing out headcanon snippets for ideas that I may not write out in fic
2023 Primary Hobby Goals:
Books:
Read at least 20 new books, with focus on fantasy and non-fiction
Play the following games:
A Plague Tale - Requiem
Days Gone
Ghost of Tsushima
My Time at Sandrock
Disney Dreamlight Valley
The Outer Worlds
Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West
Borderlands - The PreSequel
Life is Strange True Colors
Tell Me Why
Finish MELE - ME3
Syberia series (1-3, The World Before)
Other hobbies:
Nature photography
Puzzles and puzzle books
Music and video editing
Music in some capacity (flute, guitar, or piano)
Keeping the same mantra as last year, to find joy in the little things. Also, to have kindness towards myself when I struggle. <3

Platform Bubble: A transparent content library that lets you choose the brain you want for yourself based on the averaged neurological changes of the consumers of the book, course, film, drama, etc. curated or, if the changes are too small, based on the genre, discipline, institution, lecturer, author, director or other creators. That is the definitively life-revolutionizing choice we need on top of the choices of exhilaratingly but ultimately helplessly watching larvae taking over human brains in Parasyte: The Grey or [doomsday scifi spoiler] the dispatch of a human brain to forlorn outer space in 3 Body Problem, shows which recently topped a FlixPatrol global TV streaming chart in close succession.
Content and life are fast evolving, so we need to ensure whatever forms of societal compass we have with respect to them keep pace. Sharper differentiation between beneficial content and detrimental content enables the precise and efficient choice optimization that is ever more important against a backdrop of enrichment/entertainment option overload and harrowing time scarcity. The necessity is real whether you are pro-screen or anti-screen.
To identify with an "anti-screen" league might sound hypocritical in this smartphone age. Even this discourse is of necessity mediated through a screen. The temptation and justification for screen usage are made powerful by the current realities of modern living — the network effect (i.e. how the value of a good or service depends on the number of users, which in turn carries implications for any digital abstinence or digital hermitism on the part of users like business owners, commentators, creators or even simply run-of-the-mill career builders), phone-addicted spouses and buddies whose attention you switch on more readily through WhatsApp, the need to join social conversations around trending shows to avoid becoming an outcast, online-only opinion pieces, and essential services increasingly requiring web connectivity. Prominent reflections of authentic neurological changes that confirm purported negative consequences of viewing excessive onscreen violence and short-form content, for example, would be reminders that may abate the temptation and turn the tide of peer pressure to some extent. Physical written materials, in contrast, can cultivate patience, concentration and an appetite for deep contemplation, provided they are not part of any multitasking setup.
That said, the books-good-TV-bad mantra needs a nuance check given the transforming content landscape. Give fair chances to new works otherwise tarnished by past scientific findings on the harm of television watching and stop shallow publications from stealing precious minutes of our lives. Television can be a rich and cognitively stimulating form of storytelling, if screen creators care to make the best of their medium, whereas a financially threatened publishing industry surviving on conservative business ethos may keep selecting works that repeat the same ideas for up to hundreds of pages at a time to meet traditional length expectations and across tens of thousands of titles. Unlike text, screen details may await careful discovery, instead of always being spelled out one way or another. What an opportunity for bookish nerds to stretch our multiple faculties. Layered audiovisual worlds take this millions of steps further as they compact ideas, emotions and sociocultural, literary and academic references into mere minutes or even seconds. The caveat is that the brain catalog must carry a warning about the content-independent perils of excessive screen time.
Not relying solely on superficial theories and industry experiences vulnerable to future disruption, @netflix itself has had a biophysical lab that measured electrical activities in volunteers' brains as they watched videos. To take this to an ideal level, we might want to randomly select individuals, habitual users of a medium and others alike, for each item or group in the proposed content library and conduct magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or other suitable measurements of them before and after their consumption of the item or of a statistically significant number of group items. With massive samples of such individuals, any confounding factors would hopefully cancel out each other. To be sure, the problems with this approach are tremendous: staggering technical and logistical costs, denial of personal autonomy, riding roughshod over conscientious objection to consuming works of certain ideologies or themes.
One compromise would be comparing the neurological measurements of pairs or, if the numbers permit, paired pools of consenting, anonymized viewers who share similar biographical data and viewing histories but differ in whether they have consumed the content item or group under evaluation. A discounted price tier can be offered to incentivize the consent, data sharing and measurements. There are at least two complications, on top of the obvious analytical limitation of self-selection, however. First, while pure entertainment content may be viewed as merely a foregone luxury for non-consenting individuals, the same is not true for foregone enrichment items, including important academic books and courses as well as works of profound societal value that inspire you, for instance, to push on against your real-life difficulties or to take pride in your marginalized background. The consequence is the oft-discussed data-selling equivalent of organ selling for people of lesser means who actually need to consume the works. Second, discussions around TikTok bans and around familial genomic information have raised the concern that personal data is more than personal. The geopolitical and societal implications of massive data collection may be deemed troubling, however unfettered, authentic and informed the consent given is.
Until there is a solution or favorable consensus for challenges above, here is a suggestion for a crude proxy that circumvents them: a review site-like content library where each user can pick two shapes that she believes best represent the cognitive state and emotional state of her brain respectively after consuming a curated item. Polling on the shapes starts after complete consumption of the item is plausible. For example, the brain shape poll for a web series should start at a time that is the sum of the time of release of the finale of a web series and the running duration of the finale. To minimize the effect of any manipulation by rabid fandoms or unscrupulous commercial players, the most popular brain shapes for the item are to be unveiled only after the end of a reasonably long voting period, after which no more vote will be accepted. At least the fun concept itself should be sufficient non-monetary incentive for poll participation.
Quantitative surveys of neurological states need not obliterate any romance or particularity of a viewing or fiction reading experience. Just as you can imagine having separate fabulous friendships with twins with identical looks and similar personalities, the Shinichi-Migi bromance in the Japanese manga/anime version of Parasyte and the Suin-Heidi "sismance" (never mind that a widely-accepted term for female bromance still does not exist) in the South Korean live-action adaptation of Parasyte mentioned in the beginning may be both worth cherishing in their own rights, even if they all hold out brains in the shape of a reaper with a large heart as its head in poll results. Ditto for The Three-Body Problem franchise's Cheng Xin X Yun Tianming loveline and Cheng Jin (Jin Cheng) X Will Downing loveline, and any steaming, plasmoid-shaped brains.

Introduction In the realm of architectural development - construction, design, excavation, and rehabilitation, the future takes shape long before the foundation is laid. We are moving towards an epoch where sustainability is not merely an option but a necessity. With advancements in technology, industry innovators are now setting their sights toward an exciting landscape - zero-waste construction sites - promising a revolution in sustainable construction trends. Zero-Waste: A Panacea for Construction Woes? The global construction industry accounts for nearly 39% of the world’s carbon emissions, underlining the pressing need to reimagine our construction methods and materials. Zero-waste construction sites, a commendable stride towards sustainable construction, can play a crucial role in mitigating this environmental burden. Digital innovations like Building Information Modelling (BIM), innovative project management software, artificial intelligence (AI), and geospatial information systems (GIS) can help achieve site-specific efficiency, reducing the likeliness of excessive waste production. They optimize resource allocation, minimize overproduction, and reduce the frequency of errors. Green Building Materials: A Sustainable Shift Complementing digital innovation, architects and builders are increasingly leveraging green building materials. From recycled metals to bio-based polymers and reclaimed wood, these sustainable alternatives play an instrumental role in the drive towards zero-waste sites. Cohabitating architectural elegance with sustainable advancements, these materials not only promote eco-friendly construction processes but also enhance the built environment’s resilience. Closed-loop Construction: Recycle, Reuse and Recycle Again Embracing the closed-loop - or circular - economy model, the construction industry is toggling toward methods that promote the efficient use of resources and waste minimization. The mantra is simple yet effective - generate as little waste as possible, and whatever is produced should be used, recycled, and reused. The combination of modular construction and deconstruction approaches furthers the concept of closed-loop construction. Prefabricated building components reduce on-site waste, while deconstruction enables material recovery at the end of a structure’s lifespan, seamlessly perpetuating the recycling loop. Locating Legacies: Building with Longevity Sustainable construction is not only about reducing waste - it’s about endurance too. Features like energy-saving systems, long-lasting materials, and innovative design are creating a future where buildings not only minimize their initial environmental impact, but continue to perform efficiently throughout their life cycles. Think Global, Act Local: Engaging Community Stakeholders To truly succeed in creating a zero-waste future in sustainable construction, the initiative should not be confined to builders and architects alone. Engaging local communities, suppliers, policymakers, and waste management sectors can reinforce and accelerate the shift towards sustainable practice and policy. Resilient design, community-engaged planning, green construction standards, irrefutable business cases for low carbon materials – inclusive and multifaceted approaches are going to be the building blocks to advance towards a zero-waste future. Conclusion In the marathon toward sustainable evolution, zero-waste construction sites mark a significant milestone. The new generation of architects, builders, and engineers are poised to redefine the way we build, sustaining the echo of environmental consciousness in every corner and concrete of our constructed realities. As we cross thresholds into the heart of innovation, the future undoubtedly lies in the foundation of sustainable construction. It's not just about building for today but programming the potential for an environmentally balanced tomorrow. Title: Predicting the Zero-Waste Horizon: Shaping the Future of Sustainable Construction
Our present world is grappling with the twin challenges of rapid urbanization and ever-increasing demands for sustainable living. It is pushing the boundaries of construction practice towards unprecedented innovations. The future of sustainable construction is shaping up to look brighter, greener, and certainly more eco-friendly. Our prognosis for the construction realm pivots around optimizing usage, reducing waste, and developing a circular economy. The dawn of the future lies with zero-waste construction sites. This concept focuses on the holistic use of resources aiming to minimize or eliminate construction waste entirely. In essence, the future construction sites will be scenes of sophistication and environmental consciousness, intertwining technology with sustainable practices to deliver eco-friendly structures and infrastructures. Building Information Modeling (BIM) is already playing a significant role in waste management. Its ability to offer a virtual model of a building fosters precision, reducing material wastage drastically. Future software developments and AI integration will enhance the accuracy of BIM, further driving the zero-waste movement. In the coming decades, we also expect to see the adoption of the principles of the circular economy within construction more significantly. Concrete, for instance, could be replaced by self-healing biocements or geopolymer concretes. Post-construction waste will be eliminated through deconstructible designs that allow for building components to be reused or recycled efficiently. Furthermore, the future of sustainable construction will witness an upsurge in construction 3D printing, helping reduce waste associated with traditional building techniques. This technology promises not just reduced waste but also time efficiency and reduced project costs. Veering away from the conventional construction materials and methods, the industry will see an increased uptake of offsite construction. Building modules in controlled environments will allow for precise, waste-minimizing, and quality-focused construction. Not to mention, this reduces the construction period and environmental impact - a win-win situation for all. Predicting the future is not without challenges, but leveraging technology and embracing innovative construction methodologies could translate the zero-waste construction sites from an abstract concept to concrete reality. These transformative changes, coupled with supportive policy structures and investment in research and development, will tip scales in favor of total sustainability in the construction sector. In conclusion, the future of sustainable construction envisages a world where waste is not an accepted byproduct but a resource waiting to be optimally utilized. This projection serves as inspiration and motivation to drive stakeholders towards achieving sustainable objectives, creating a zero-waste future where human habitats and nature can coexist harmoniously. To stay tuned with latest developments in sustainable construction and zero-waste trends, explore our blog and subscribe to our updates. Keywords: Sustainable construction, Zero-waste construction sites, Future of construction, Circular economy in construction, Building Information Modeling, 3D construction printing, Offsite construction, Geopolymer concretes. "Ready to build a sustainable future? Embrace zero-waste construction trends today and lead the charge towards a more sustainable, greener world. Get in touch with us now to learn how!" Start Your Digital Transformation Now! Prediction: Driven by the increasing pressure of environmental concerns and technological advancements, the construction industry is gradually transitioning to zero-waste sites. Over the next years, we predict a future where zero-waste construction sites will not be an exception but the standard norm. Pioneering companies will take the lead in embracing innovative materials and advanced methodologies to reduce waste to minimum levels and recycle the remaining into reusable resources.
Governments will follow suit, moulding policies to mandate zero-waste practices prioritizing sustainability in construction, creating an industry where waste is viewed not as an inevitable byproduct but as a misplaced resource. Quote: "Just as in nature, where there is no concept of waste, the future foresees a construction industry shaped by the principle of circularity - where the end of lifecycle for one building signifies the birth of another."
