After her affair with Henry Crawford, Maria is sent to “another country”. Which country do you think it was? The problem with her being sent to anywhere in continental Europe is that Jane Austen was writing Mansfield Mark during the Napeoleonic Wars, and war in Europe had been ongoing for nearly 25 years at this point (though it was soon to end). Is Austen anticipating the end of the wars? Is she ignoring them (in the same way that contemporary writers during the COVID pandemic would not necessarily depict their characters as living during the pandemic)? Or is she thinking of Maria being somewhere else?
I am pretty darn sure Maria is still in the United Kingdom (whatever that was at the time), here is the relevant quote:
It ended in Mrs. Norris’s resolving to quit Mansfield and devote herself to her unfortunate Maria, and in an establishment being formed for them in another country, remote and private, where, shut up together with little society, on one side no affection, on the other no judgment, it may be reasonably supposed that their tempers became their mutual punishment. (Ch 57)
The meaning of "country" is more vague in Austen than it is today. According to Etymoline:
mid-13c., "(one's) native land;" c. 1300, "any geographic area," sometimes with implications of political organization, from Old French contree, cuntrede "region, district, country,"... Also from c. 1300 as "area surrounding a walled city or town; the open country." By early 16c. the word was applied mostly to rural areas, as opposed to towns and cities. Meaning "inhabitants of a country, the people" is from c. 1300.
I'm pretty certain that what this sentence means is another "county" or shire, other than Northamptonshire, within England.
Some examples of Austen using country. Bingley is asked if he'll stay in the country, which likely means stay in a rural area/Hertfordshire, while Mr. Bennet calls his daughters the silliest in the country, which may mean England or Hertfordshire.
This quote seems modern use, but it's actually using country to talk about the neighbourhood:
You have a sweet room here, Mr. Bingley, and a charming prospect over that gravel walk. I do not know a place in the country that is equal to Netherfield. You will not think of quitting it in a hurry, I hope, though you have but a short lease.
And the use here of "country" as coming into the rural areas:
Mr. Bingley with having promised on his first coming into the country to give a ball at Netherfield.
Anyway, I think Maria is in England, just in a shire or county far from home.

OH SHIT AUSTEN-VERSE IM GONNA CRY, DO IT.
ngl this is my fave verse of all time and i’m now listening to the pride & prejudice soundtrack let’s go !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
blue (who would be known by his proper name, francis, in this verse) is not wealthy and does not have the connections or dowry to be preferable for marriage. as a child his parents tried to groom him to be civilised, as blue’s parents only had him at the time and so their family legacy laid with him. however, francis was always in another world. caught up in music, in adventures in the woods, he was never what the family wanted nor needed. francis’ mother admired his spirit, but his father feared for what it meant for their family moving forward. blue’s mother (like she does in basically every universe, rip) passes away, leaving francis’ father to remarry and have more children. a similar vibe to what can be found in mansfield park, francis is ostracized and pressured to be more. although with plenty of children under the one roof once his father remarried, their estate is still small, and although francis was to inherit upon his father’s passing - he didn’t want any part of it. this house was not a home, and he did not want to take a wife out of obligation as his father had after his own mother passed. so francis did what he thought he had to - he joined the militia.
the militia were respected (to the gentry in relevant shires, at least), a feeling francis wasn’t used to. without the pressures of his family looming over him, his name not bearing much weight to anyone he met, he was free to create his own reputation. making the acquaintances of wealthier men within the militia, it was clear that francis was growing into the man his family had always wanted. one of valour and honour, and although he enjoyed the delights town would offer them when they were away (in form of libations and late nights), he was always aware of the consequences of his actions. francis always requested his station far from his home, and responded to his father’s letters sparingly. francis would also take residence with his closest companions when not on active duty, and would often see different parts of the country by merely staying in different parsonages and estates of those whom he had become acquainted with.
(do not misconstrue this pLEASE) but francis loves balls lmfaoo. he loves to dance, and he loves any excuse he has to be social. having received a gentleman’s education (his parents’ sacrificing everything in order to elevate his rank), it allowed francis to rise in the ranks of the militia despite his worth of so little a year. but, inspired by his mother and a world unlike the aristocracy he was thrust into, he believed in love. and although the balls were primarily social events where francis felt uninhibited by the constraints of the time, it was clear that he lay in wait to meet his future bride. certainly agreeable and knowing that his search of a partner could easily be fulfilled, francis did not want to make the wrong decision. he had been hurt in love before, and always found a reason to wait. he was scared - a trait shared by veritas blue. any time an engagement could be considered, francis would either have to move, or convince himself that no feelings existed. although his reputation not tarnished, word of his incivility was known.
you know what fight me i was gonna keep this a Blue Exclusive hc but in order for an austen-verse headcanon fest, we need a partner. so sorry maaria, i am going to be Writing some regency era blibby now lmfao. but i imagine libby (or should i say elizabeth) to be in high society, most likely promised to a fellow wealthy bachelor in their society. but libby wouldn’t like that. and upon meeting francis as his militia regiment rolls into their shire, their chemistry would be palpable - however forbidden. elizabeth is promised otherwise, and francis does not make the living that a woman of her dowry could ever marry. but their connection was true and both knew it, even then. but both were tied to their tentpoles of fate, and their love (and perhaps vows, before her parents talked elizabeth out of it knowing the tarnish of her reputation at such an imprudent marriage) would see francis disappear for a couple of years, returning a wealthy captain (much like anne and frederick in persuasion). perhaps it is too late and elizabeth has already been promised to someone else. but francis would continually write her letters regardless, and i imagine they would reunite a few years later and the expectations of their world being too much, and only feeling some semblance of sanity when they’re together. since francis can now provide, i imagine elizabeth being able to call off any engagements she is engaged into if francis makes his sentiments known to her. and because francis is determined to be able to provide for elizabeth, and only when he knows he can does he ask elizabeth’s parents their permission to marry their daughter. and finally, francis will get the family he always wanted, with a love he knows that, unlike the love he felt from his family growing up, he knew to be true.

Sneak peek at new Pleasley premises for Mansfield wildlife rescue charity
Mansfield Wildlife Rescue is settling into new premises. Founder Cheryl Martins said the former council plant nursery, on Shire Road, Pleasley Vale, is an ideal location for rescuing and rehabilitating Mansfield’s wildlife. Cheryl had previously operated the rescue centre from her home on Brown Avenue in Mansfield Woodhouse for more than 20 years – and […]

Tourism regions in Victoria
The state of Victoria is divided into 12 tourism regions which group together areas of similar geography, environment, history or culture.
Tumblr media
Victoria’s 12 tourism regions
How are region boundaries defined?
In general, tourism regions consist of several local government areas (also known as local councils or municipalities), with region boundaries following the lines of municipal boundaries. There are a small number of exceptions to this rule.
Phillip Island region. This covers only part of the Bass Coast Shire. It includes only Phillip Island and the mainland town of San Remo which is directly linked to the island by a bridge.
Gippsland region. This excludes the part of the Bass Coast Shire that is included in the Phillip Island tourism region.
Yarra Valley & Dandenong Ranges region. This includes the far southern part of the Murrindindi Shire which is closest to Melbourne, covering the areas around King Lake, Narbethong, Marysville and Buxton.
High Country region. This excludes the southernmost part of the Murrindindi Shire which is part of the Yarra Valley & Dandenong Ranges region.
Tourism regions and their local councils
Tourism regionLocal councils in this region1. Melbourne & SuburbsBanyule, Bayside, Boroondara, Brimbank, Casey, Greater Dandenong, Darebin, Glen Eira, Hobsons Bay, Hume, Kingston, Knox, Manningham, Maribyrnong, Maroondah, Melbourne, Melton, Monash, Moonee Valley, Moreland, Port Phillip, Stonnington, Whitehorse, Whittlesea, Wyndham, Yarra2. Tourism region anomalies
While regions are generally defined along local government boundaries, this has created some anomalies when it comes to grouping locations of similar history or culture together.
Consider the town of Clunes. It was the site of Victoria’s first registered gold strike which triggered the famous gold rush of the 1850s and 1860s, resulting in great prosperity and attracting world-wide attention. Clunes is located in the far western corner of the Hepburn Shire, thus putting it into the Daylesford & Macedon Ranges tourism region. Surrounding Clunes on three sides is the Central Goldfields Shire, Mount Alexander Shire and City of Ballarat – all of which are in the Goldfields region. It seems odd that the birthplace of gold in Victoria is excluded, by the smallest of margins, from being part of the Goldfields region which encompasses important surrounding towns and cities of the gold rush days like Ballarat, Castlemaine, Maldon, Maryborough and Bendigo.
Tumblr media
Clunes – the birthplace of Victoria’s gold rush, yet not in the Goldfields region.
Another anomaly is with the north-eastern Victorian town of Rutherglen, famous for being in the heart of one of Victoria’s most important wine producing areas. It lies less than 10 kilometres from the Murray River, but because it is in the Shire of Indigo, it ends up in the High Country region. This has the effect of creating an unusual situation where the Murray region is split into two distinct parts – a large section from the state border west of Mildura to Yarrawonga and then a smaller area around the north-eastern corner of Victoria that includes Wodonga and Corryong.
Tumblr media
Rutherglen – just a stone’s throw from the Murray River but not in the Murray region.

Top Ten Homes of 2017 · Delatite Station
Top Ten Homes of 2017 · Delatite Station
Top Ten Homes of 2017
by Lucy Feagins, Editor
The homestead at Delatite Station is one of Mansfield’s oldest shire buildings, constructed in 1890. Descendants of the current owners purchased the property in 1902. Photo – Sharyn Cairns, courtesy of Templeton Architecture.
When approaching the interiors of the Delatite Station homestead, Emma Templeton and her team focused on timeless restraint and refinement. Photo – Sharyn Cairns, courtesy of Templeton Architecture.
‘Our design ensured that natural light could infiltrate the house through subtle interventions that had a dramatic effect,’ explains Emma Templeton. Photo – Sharyn Cairns, courtesy of Templeton Architecture.
Emma tells us, ‘We have been known to refer to this project as ‘the house of halls’ as much of the design effort was placed on making more successful connections between spaces.’ Photo – Sharyn Cairns, courtesy of Templeton Architecture.

Warmth, light and integration were the key priorities when Emma Templeton, principal architect at Templeton Architecture, undertook the extensive renovation of Delatite Station in Mansfield. With 14 foot ceilings, the original home was impossible to heat and cool efficiently. Meanwhile, deep verandahs surrounding all sides of the house allowed very little natural to filter into the house.
The building was stripped back to its pure bones, removing recent ‘tack-on’s’ to reveal original Victorian features. Sinks in the corners of each bedroom were removed and rotten floors replaced. Original details were restored, whilst internal spaces are reconfigured, where necessary, to improve the light and connections between rooms.
Emma and her team also focussed on improving natural light, enclosing one verandah to create a glazed corridor, and adding new windows in key locations to allow light to sink deep into the house, and providing new views out onto that amazing garden!
For the full story and many more pics of this incredible home, do revisit the original post!

isaacashe published Money seized from loan sharks handed out to savers
Sensible savers in Shirebrook are being rewarded with cash seized from illegal 'loan shark' lenders. Proceeds of crime money, confiscated from convicted loan sharks, is being used to sponsor new credit union accounts in the town, near Mansfield. The new scheme will see The England Illegal Money Lending Team (IMLT) working with 2 Shires Credit Union to raise awareness of illegal lending and prevent more residents from falling victim of one.Read more: Southwell pensioner short-changed out of...
