Il était né Ricardo Baliardo à Sète, il est mort Manitas de Plata (mains d’argent), à 30 bornes de là, à Montpellier, 93 ans plus tard. Mais son port d’attache, c’était un peu plus loin, à l’embouchure du Rhône, aux Saintes. Oui, les Saintes Maries de la mer, le centre festif de la nébuleuse gitane hexagonale. Au Café des Vagues, il jetait l’ancre… et sa guitare chantait pour lui, sa belle gueule burinée et ses yeux incandescents faisaient le reste. Les Américaines se consumaient… 

Manitas a vendu pas loin de 100 millions de disques, pas mal pour un type que la guitare avait apprivoisé et avec qui il a longtemps fait corps. Bon, il n’était pas un maître éclairé de l’orthodoxie flamenca comme El Camaron de la Isla ni un caïd de la guitare andalouse pétrie de jazz comme Paco de Lucia. Non, son parcours, local et planétaire, flamboyant, s’apparente plus à celui de ses « descendants », les Gipsy Kings. D’ailleurs, le chanteur et compagnon de route de Manitas, c’était José Reyes, père de deux des musiciens du groupe.

Et puis il y avait aussi du Django, ce cousin du nord, dans le rapport de l’homme et sa guitare. 

Il en a conquis, du monde : le Carnegie Hall de New York (14 fois sold out !), les femmes, dont certaines lui ont donné des enfants (13, officiellement, bien plus, en fait),

Salvador Dali, qu’il a accompagné le temps d’une mémorable performance new yorkaise,

Lucien Clergue, le photographe de Camargue, qui l’a si bien saisi.

Et le public d’ici, pour qui Manitas était une icône gitane dès les sixties, face à la déferlante yé yé !

Il a flambé, Manitas, il est mort ruiné, dans une maison de retraite, ses guitares – désaccordées - auprès de lui…
