On This Day: July 28 2023
One year ago today, the collective made a headlining appearance on the first night of the Radar Festival at the O2 Victoria Warehouse in Manchester, UK. Another stop of their United Kingdom & Europe Summer Rituals tour in 2023.
The setlist is reported to have been as follows:

ASHNIKKO @ O2 VICTORIA WAREHOUSE, MANCHESTER
Well it's coming up to the final gigs of the year, just one more left to do. Female powerhouse pop-rap artist Ashnikko at the O2 Victoria Warehouse was one I was pretty excited about. I've photographed her a couple of years ago when she came to O2 Ritz, that one may well have been her début in Manchester, but don't quote me?
Tonight I was photographing for the Academy Music Group and the venue, and I was asked to photograph the whole show for the artist on arrival. Pretty pleased about that, having the pit all to myself after about 12 photographers were rammed together in the pit, all trying to get THAT shot. I was pleased with the outcome and I also did a little video reel too, which you can see at the bottom. Lot's of movement, poses, real passion and artistic performance throughout.

LIZZY MCALPINE’S NEW ALBUM OLDER OUT NOW
Older, the highly anticipated new album from singer, songwriter and producer Lizzy McAlpine is out today on RCA Records—get it here.
In celebration of the album, Lizzy will embark on “The Older Tour,” an extensive headline run hitting North America, the U.K. and Europe. The dates, which kick off this month, will see Lizzy playing back-to-back nights at New York’s Radio City Music Hall, Los Angeles’ Greek Theatre, Washington D.C.’s The Anthem, Boston’s MGM Music Hall at Fenway and Philadelphia’s The Met. Additional stops include Toronto’s Budweiser Stage, Seattle’s WaMu Theater and San Francisco’s Bill Graham Civic Auditorium as well as performances at Bonnaroo and Hinterland festivals. See below for a full itinerary.
Recorded and produced in Los Angeles by Lizzy with Mason Stoops (Ryan Beatty, Del Water Gap), Ryan Lerman of Scary Pockets, Jeremy Most (Emily King, Norah Jones) and Tony Berg (Taylor Swift, Boygenius), Older finds the 24-year-old rising star stepping into newfound confidence, discovering her voice and defining her artistry with profound simplicity. It’s a notable departure for Lizzy, who wrote the LP’s deeply personal 14 tracks during a transition into adulthood.
Lizzy’s eagerly awaited third studio album features previously shared singles, “I Guess” and the record’s title track, which she performed for the first time on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” last month—watch here.
Older is the follow up to Lizzy’s widely successful album, five seconds flat, which was released to critical acclaim in the spring of 2022. The record features hit singles “all my ghosts” and “erase me (feat. Jacob Collier)” as well as the Platinum-certified track,“ceilings,” which debuted at No. 75 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Born outside Philadelphia, Lizzy gained recognition when she began to share original songs and covers on Soundcloud and YouTube. In 2020, Lizzy released her debut album, Give Me A Minute, solidifying herself as a rising force and amassing thousands of devoted fans. She has collaborated with some of the industry’s biggest names, most recently featuring on Niall Horan’s “You Could Start a Cult” and Noah Kahan’s “Call Your Mom.” Watch Lizzy perform on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, The Ellen Show and NPR Music’s Tiny Desk, where her set was voted in the Top 5 Tiny Desks of 2022.

MY YEAR: 2024 HIGHLIGHTS
So let us recap the year before 2025 commences.
Back in March, I had my first personal highlight. I was asked to be a speaker at the Women's Institute in Urmston, Manchester, to talk about me and my photography work. I was anxious about standing there speaking about myself, so I asked my boss at Louder Than War to do an 'in conversation'. I had a flutter of nerves, but it soon disappeared and I waffled on about life, music, and photography for an hour. I didn't think anyone would be interested, but I was wrong and it was lovely to get so much positive feedback afterwards. We discussed how live music presents its challenges, from photo contracts, pit etiquette, navigating low light and unpredictable movements to capturing a fleeting moment. Its great to feel valued.
Photo below by Amanda Window.
I was pretty excited to meet Holly Johnson (albeit it briefly) again, after last seeing/ talking to him in Erics as a teenager in 1977, when he was in the local band Big in Japan. It was at the preview of his Liverpool Exhibition - The Holly Johnson Story. Fabulous!
Onto musical adventures:
One standout show would undoubtedly be the extraordinary Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds on their Wild God Tour at AO Arena in Manchester in November. Capturing him amidst the front crowd, rather than solely on stage, was a long-held dream. His raw energy and magnetic presence are unparalleled, and I doubt I’ll ever tire of photographing such an electrifying, inspiring performer.
One of my absolute favourite female artist is Paloma Faith – ever the chameleon, constantly reinventing herself with each tour. Shooting her is always a thrill; her recent shows were no exception. I did two back-to-back shows; but this red-hot outfit was a dream: a divine diva incarnate.
Amyl and the Sniffers was another standout moment, I finally got them off my bucket list at Manchester Academy. Their electric energy, fast-paced chaos and Amy’s raw power kept me on my toes the entire time.
Lindsay Stirling is an incredibly talented violinist who effortlessly combines intricate playing with dynamic movement and striking choreography—a truly remarkable feat. An astonishing show.
Conan Grey a powerhouse of the American pop scene, captivated his massive Gen Z fanbase with two sold-out nights at Manchester’s O2 Apollo. Bathed in dramatic lighting, exuding ’80s rock ‘n’ roll swagger, he commanded the stage in a vibrant leather outfit—a photographer’s dream come to life.
Other standout moments for me include the theatrical pop artist Mika, (for AMG), a big bucket list ✔︎ for Sting (for We Shoot Music), the colourful theatrical performance of OVO - Cirque Du Soleil, Pink, the electrifying Confidence Man, Aurora‘s ethereal vocals and stunning stage design, the emotional power of Camille O’Sullivan, Janelle Monáe‘s full spectacle, and the iconic Grace Jones.
My highlights also featured artists at Live at Leeds – Orla Gartland, Caity Baiser, Billy Nomates, Hot Wax, and Baxter Dury.
I finally had the chance to check the energetic The Hives off my bucket list.
And last, but not least, my favourite find of the year was the ’50s-inspired American rocker Stephen Sanchez. I haven't stopped playing his album Angel Face since.
Next year, I aim to capture a show at the UK’s largest indoor arena, the Co-op, and dive into more unforgettable pop shows.
THANKS TO:
My friends and followers for their likes, comments or reposts.
To the PR for organising photo passes and guestlists. To the photographers who have shared the pit with me, a mention must go to Andy Von Pip for the car-sharing banter, road planning and roadwork detours.
To the reviewers who have complimented my photos with their beautiful words. Big thanks to MK Bennett for his poetic deep reviews. It’s been 16 years since I leapt into the music business. It's 9 years since I started to shoot for Academy Music Group as a house photographer for O2 Ritz, O2 Victoria Warehouse and O2 Apollo and 11 years for the Louder Than War website.
This year I photographed everyone below:
Sharon Shannon Band, Camille O' Sullivan, Imelda May, Rick Astley, Confidence Man, Kate Nash, Connie Constable, Khruangbin, WH Lung, Anna B Savage, PEM, Amyl and the Sniffers, Upchuck, Conan Grey, Between Friends, Lindsey Stirling, NYA, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Black Country new Road, Chelsea Wolfe, Mary Jane Duphe, Alice Cooper, Primal Scream, The Meffs, Eivor, Sylvaine, Aurora, Unflirt, Bianca Del Rio, Mary Mac, Camille O' Sullivan, Richard Ashcroft, Garbage, Luca and the Best Boys, Cast, Shania Twain, Delta Goodrem, Janelle Monae, Pink, Grace Jones, Sting, Germein, Storry, Richard Hawley, Thea Gilmore, Thirty Seconds From Mars, Jagwar, Janes' Addiction, Humanist, Orla Gartland, Future Islands, Melanie C, Caity Baser, Sprints, Billy Nomates, Corrinne Bailey Rae, Declan McKenna, Lucia + the Best Boys, Baxter Dury, Imogen and the Knife, Hotwax, Baby Queen, Take That, Olly Murs, Paloma Faith, Mika, The Hives, Bad Nerves, Slash feat Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators, Jake Bugg, Dillon Squire, Liam Gallagher + John Squire, Lust For Life, Suzi Ronson, LSDOXOX, Fever Ray, Alison Goldfrapp, Alex Chapman DJ, Georgia, Stephen Sanchez; Kim Petras; Depeche Mode, Nadine Shah, Dorian Electra, Baby Morocco, John Vincent III, Static Dress, Cassette, Bad Omens, Bring Me The Horizon. Cirque Du Soleil - OVO, Rick Astley in conversation (book launch) Holly Johnson (preview night of his exhibition)
And finally, this is me in December 2024, looking forward to taking early retirement from my part-time day job in February 25. Let's see what else 2025 has in store, I hope it's good.
