what do we know about the beast (and by proxy the son of the beast)?
i know you can see its pen/where it was held from the line but do we have any more knowledge on it?
OOO YES I LOVE THE BEAST!!!
We actually know surprisingly (and disappointingly) little about The Beast and its family considering how integral to the park's history it is. Here's what we do know for sure about the creatures themselves:
In its opening year, an announcement asking for volunteers in hunting down The Beast was posted on a board outside of the ride. The Beast is a massive, orange-furred animal - likely a mammal, and likely a carnivore - with five toes on each paw and long silver claws. At some point, manacles were attached to its front legs. It's unknown how this was achieved. Perhaps that hunting party was relatively successful.
The Beast is confirmed male due to teasers for Son of Beast referring to it as "the father"
It has a son (Son of Beast) and a younger brother (The Beastie). We learn of The Beastie's biological sex via the plaque on the ground for 1980 in the Tower Garden. An image of that plaque (taken by me on October 28, 2023) can be found below.
Thanks to the logo, the Beast paw prints on the ground, and a photo found on the Flight of Fear Substation Overview map, we also know The Beast's general paw shape and size. We also know of The Beastie's paws thanks to its logo.
Son of Beast had yellow eyes with oval-shaped pupils. We know this due to its logo
Both The Beast and Son of Beast caught the attention of the Bureau of Paranormal Activity and both have been studied. Some of Beast was at some point captured and taken to Outpost 5, where it later escaped. The Beast, on the other hand, has been studied in its original habitat in the forest of Rivertown near the Sycamore Mining Company.
Additionally, the Substation responsibilities of The Beast and Son of Beast are listed as "CRYPTOZOOLOGY" and "QUARANTINE CONTAINMENT COMPLEX" respectively. This is found on the "SUBSTATION Principle Duties and Responsibilities", and I'll post a reference and transcription of that paper once I can go to the park and actually get a picture of it without a glare lol
Story-wise, we know very little about what's going on with The Beast or why we - the riders - are even there. Additionally, a lot of Son of Beast's story and theming went undocumented and thus has effectively disappeared alongside the ride. Hopefully we'll be getting some new stuff in the future, though! I'd be lying if I didn't say the Son of Beast crate that appeared during last season's Halloween Haunt hasn't made me a little hopeful.
There are also a couple of tie-ins between Son of Beast and both Mystic Timbers and Adventure Express, though (and potentially the Slaughterhouse scare maze)! I'll detail that in a separate post, though. I wouldn't want to make this answer any longer! 😅
