Webcomics at Day 100 #2: Penny Arcade
Pages read: 11/18/1998 – 8/20/1999 & 4/13/2009 – 8/19/2009 (including accompanying blog posts); about 180 pages
Reason for selection: Penny Arcade is important. The Gamer Webcomic is kind of the archetypical webcomic, and Penny Arcade is its most famous example. But PA has crossed over into the world of mainstream gaming and nerd culture enough that it’s transcended just webcomics, hosting major gaming conventions, pioneering the medium of TTRPG actual play, and running a successful charity. Their projects are known by people who don’t read the comic itself, and they’ve arguably played a role in normalizing video games as a hobby in broader culture.
Current status: Has updated three times a week pretty consistently throughout its entire run. In 2024 the two main characters are still wearing the same shirts they wore in 1998.
Content warnings: misogyny, sexual humor, general period typical humor including slurs
Overall thoughts: Penny Arcade relies so much on references to real-time video games and nerd culture moments that it doesn’t read well as an archive. I enjoyed the 2009 comics more than the 1998-9 comics simply because I understood a lot of the 2009 cultural references while the 90s ones go right over my head. Without that context, reading it feels like sitting on a bus behind two guys who are having a loud and opinionated conversation about their own lives. Playing the same games and running in the same circles as the creators is near essential to enjoy the work.
Penny Arcade doesn’t do anything with the webcomics medium that wouldn’t be possible in print – they primarily make three-panel strips with text and still images, and since 2002, these have been accompanied by blog commentary from one of the creators. Despite or because of this, Jerry Holkins and Mike Krahulik are the platonic ideal of Guys Who Make Webcomics. Cishet white men in their early twenties (when PA began) who didn’t have any formal training in comics or any previous notoriety, but who had internet access in its early days, a sarcastic sense of humor, and strong opinions that they really liked to share. The first few years of strips have their text written in Comic Sans, and an early strip (‘A VERY Special Penny Arcade!’ February 17, 1999) features Mike (‘in character’ as Gabe) proposing to his then-girlfriend Kara.
These early strips are far better preserved than the average 90s webcomic, and I do think that reading the full archive would be a fascinating case study of how the PA brand was built, and more broadly how a creator develops their skills and grows their audience. The art style has become more exaggerated and distinctive over the years, and the lettering looks like a published comic book. Even though there’s no narrative to the strip itself, there’s this classic American Dream, come-from-nothing narrative to the first decade of the comic’s history that I think is compelling to a lot of people, especially to gamers in the 2000s when gaming is still an often ridiculed hobby.
Capturing this, there’s scholarship on the economics of webcomics that discuss Penny Arcade and how its creators managed to turn the comic into a well-paying day job. I hate thinking about money and can’t stand economics as a discipline so I didn’t read these, but I did read Bryanne Miller’s 2007 Master’s thesis ‘Making “Cents” of Subcultural Capital: The Preservation of Authenticity and Credibility in Penny Arcade Subculture,’ a really fascinating exploration which includes interviews with fans talking about their experiences with the comic and community. According to this, PA fans see themselves as a subculture within a subculture, a particular flavor of grassroots gamer who is skeptical of major games companies and journalism. To them, Holkins and Krahulik are the witty spokespeople for their underdog gamer sect fighting against the mainstream.
The thesis also delves into the major controversies PA has been involved in, where they’ve picked fights with more powerful celebrities, as well as their open resistance to advertising even while participating in it. It also discusses Child’s Play, PA’s official charity, set up with the explicit purpose of changing the public perception of gamers at a time where the ‘video games cause violence’ panic was at its height in mainstream media. I don’t know how calculated vs truthful PA’s image of being against corporations and commercialization is, but I have to give them some credit. PA accepts donations and sells merchandise but is entirely free to read, and always has been. This is in contrast to PvP, another popular gaming webcomic of the 2000s, which has fully paywalled its archive.
Finally, ‘two gamers on a couch’ may be PA’s main mode, but it’s not their only mode. In June 2009 they posted the first pages of Lookouts, a fantasy woodland survival adventure, and Automata, a 1920s noir with artificial intelligence. These are formatted more like comic book pages, with distinct art styles, and both of their first pages are effective at establishing their worlds, which are immediately intriguing and honestly both feel like great settings for TTRPG campaigns. Comparing these to a 1999 strip gives me a lot of hope for how much I could improve at writing and analysis in ten years. Also, ‘No Heart, No Soul, No Service’ is a great line.
Relevance to Homestuck: Without Penny Arcade, Homestuck might not exist – the first MS Paint Adventure, Jailbreak, was originally hosted on the PA forums (as was early Sweet Bro and Hella Jeff). The formal ties go further - Penny Arcade is one of around fifty webcomics linked from MS Paint Adventures beneath the heading ‘No Shortage of Good Websites,’ and Andrew Hussie announced in July that their PA fanart will be featured in the upcoming PA book The Splendid Magic of Penny Arcade. I also found this gem in a forum thread from March (s_o is Andrew Hussie) and while I don’t think this directly incited Homestuck, it was definitely prophetic.
Penny Arcade’s writing style, where the writers use unnecessarily obscure and archaic words to suggest intelligence paired with a tone of aggression and self-superior humor, likely influenced Homestuck given that Hussie was a regular, popular user of their forums. I see GameBro magazine as in part a parody of PA’s blog posts and their ‘gamers against mainstream gaming’ perspectives. I wonder if anyone has ever made something like Dave’s GameBro review blog but for Penny Arcade.
Continue reading? I will definitely read more from a ‘learning about internet history’ perspective, but I won’t read this for enjoyment. To be honest, I see enough gamers yelling on the internet without specifically seeking it out in webcomic form. I do think I'll read the short form narrative comics, like Automata, that the creators have made.
#webcomics 100#penny arcade#this projects gonna. Its gonna end with me getting into 13 webcomics isnt it#chrono

Contraband and Fear of Expulsion
May 24 & 25, 2024
We were ready for a break, so we had a relaxing morning: slept until we awoke. Sarah walked up to the dining room to get coffee to take to the room (twice). We took our time packing up, posting the previous day’s blog entry, and enjoying the space. We had to be out of the room by 10:00 AM, and didn’t leave for the airstrip unlit 12:10, so we took advantage of brunch that one doesn’t get on game-drive-days. It was yummy. The watering hole was mostly slow but in addition to impalas and kudus, we were rewarded with warthogs. It looked like a mama and multiple little ones. They’re like miniature versions of rhinos - prehistoric-looking! Sitting in the dining room with a good overlook was perfect for, first, Chris and Lola and, later, John and Julie to stop by and say goodbye. We wished C&L safe driving, and shared crazy travel stories with John and Julie. Such good vehicle-mates they were! Sylvanius drove us to the airport and waited with us until we were loaded on the plane. Much as we didn’t think he was up to par with the other guides we’d had, his manner and enthusiasm managed to get under our skin, and it was a fond farewell with him, too.
One of the multiple young, women pilots we’ve had came up, happy to see us, and was ready to load us into her four-seater, only to realize that she was flying someone else, and we were on a larger plane, leaving at a similar time, also to Jo’Burg. Such a small world this is with limited pilots on the circuit. As they closed the passenger door, they asked Jillebob to secure the latch - holy moly - didn’t want to have a Boeing incident on a Wilderness flight. We had two pilots up front and while we joked that we were on a training flight, more likely it was some sort of orientation flight for the new guy. In the end, he did well.
At Windhoek, we hung out in the Wilderness “lounge” with decent WiFi, and charging outlets. The Wilderness staff person let us know when to check in and go through emigration. Then, it was a bit more of a wait for the flight. Quick and easy - 1.5 hours and we arrived in Jo’Burg. We had a crazy guy meet us, super nice, but by the time we got our bags and he dropped us at the hotel, we knew all the sordid details of his life. Fun, but nuts.
In the room, Jill FT’d with Janet while Seb purged (1 kg over the Eastern Africa little-flights limit). We bought a bottle of wine in duty-free Windhoek and the check-out gal gave us a song and dance about when we could/couldn’t bring it into South Africa. We decided it was risk-worthy contraband and were grateful when we got to the room. Novice smugglers, we did ok.
The room was comfortable save for the beds so tightly tucked in that Jill woke up complaining that her feet had been in jail overnight! But truly, the Intercontinental made for an easy, comfortable overnight stay. We packed up quickly in the morning and had a wonderful breakfast at the hotel before heading back across the street to the airport. It seems that the immigration go-slow is over, as it was as easy getting through emigration, as it was going through immigration last night. We had some local currency to spend, so wandered around, bought some chocolate and mints for the road, then tucked the last little bundle of rands in a bin for charity.
We waited for a while at Gate A1 only to have a gal swing by and tell about 8-10 of us that the gate had changed to A21. Ha. After a short wait at the gate, we loaded into (or should we say stuffed into) a bus that sat… and sat…and sat by the gate, with us all the while breathing in bus fumes from others idling all in a row. Turns out, we were waiting for one person. The tarmac crew did not inspire confidence. When we got the plane, they opened the door, folks started disembarking and they told us to stay put. Didn’t seem like the safest move, but no one was run over by a passing plane before they let us board. All in all, though, we’ve really enjoyed our three SA Airlink flights. None were full, seats seem more spacious than US domestic flights and flight crew was friendly and professional.
The worry came when they passed out the immigration cards and the health section asked for confirmation that visitors have had yellow fever immunization within the past 10 years. Yikes!!! Sarah’s is 12 years old. First reaction: can one sue Passport Health, the clinic where we each had appointments to get squared away on shots? After filling out one form honestly, Sarah opted to get another form, say yes (vaccine within ten years) and plead ignorance if questioned on entry to Madagascar. Seb wished Jillebob a nice onward journey in case she was expelled at immigration. Thankfully, our airport meet-and-greet guy met us planeside (wow -service!) and hustled us through immigration, health check and bag pick-up without a hitch. Well, only one minor hiccup when immigration’s automatic sensor couldn’t read the visa stamp they had just applied to Seb’s passport. Yay for our M&G guy - we were with our guide and driver, on the way to the hotel, in about 15 minutes!
Maharo, our guide for the first part of our Madagascar adventure, and a driver met us as we emerged from picking up bags, and drove us to the hotel. What an interesting drive! City life is so different from the tourist-oriented safari locations. Looks like quite a bit of poverty here. The road went through rice paddies with shacks; small road-side stands for food; zebu, that are akin to cows but not, until we reached the city. There continued shacks, make shift buildings and more and more actual buildings. The streets were busy, traffic a bit crazy. We never saw a really modern part of town. The city center seems to be on a hill, with lots of cobblestone roads, steps going up and down the hill, lovely-looking (but well-protected) and shabby buildings mixed in all the way to our lovely hotel. It’s the residence of the Consular General of Monaco (who had the 3rd floor) and a hotel with only about four rooms on the lower two levels. Really lovely! Armed guards at the door. Maharo and the staff suggested we pass on going out for a walk - sounds like tourist safety is a concern here. We ventured out anyway; it was simply too long to sit around. We did follow their caution to stay on the main roads and not go into any alleys or buildings. More of the same - alternating lovely and shabby buildings, crazy drivers, not particularly friendly people passing on the street. It will be interesting to see the contrast from here to the countryside. The sprawling cityscape from high up is striking, with some seriously beautiful flowering trees, even if close up the sidewalks are treacherous, streets dirty and not a lot to see.
Back at the hotel, we chilled out in the room for a bit then went upstairs to order a bottle of wine in the lovely living room adorned with Grace Kelly books, eclectic art, and some African artifacts - cool. At 7:00 PM, the other two couples at the residence (all whom we recognized from our flight) arrived for dinner that was set up as a table for two and a larger table with two at each end. We encouraged everyone to join at the common table which threw the staff a bit, but made for a very entertaining evening. Both couples were 70-ish, super nice and extremely adventurous. All four Aussies with one gent originally from Glasgow, one woman from England and the other woman born in South Africa: another wonderful international group. We went around the table and introduced ourselves. Typically, Jill is the worst at remembering names, but the two women were Lynn and Maureen — the same names as Jill’s sisters-in-law. The conversation was about travel, with memories and recommendations shared all around. Back in the room to wrap up the blog post from our two travel days and off to sleep for an early rise tomorrow.

FTH 2024
Fandom Trumps Hate bidding is live as of today and this feels like a good time to tell y'all that I'm offering two gift works this year! I had to skip last year as I had just way too much going on, and while I guess technically I'm still just as busy I really missed writing as much last year so I'm prioritizing it now. But anyway - my offerings! Here's the link to my offering page itself if you'd like to look there or think about donating, but for the full breakdown (and a bit of explanation) click the readmore 😌
So as I said I'm offering two works this year, one 5-10k words and the other 10-20k words. The minimum bid for the smaller fic is $5 and for the longer one it's $15. My ships/tags/special interests/etc. are the same for both, and for those of you who are familiar with what I write I'm sure you can guess what they are lol but I'll put it all here anyway!
Ships I will write (and they are listed in order of personal preference for writing): 3zun (or any pairing within it), Wangxian, Chengqing, Xuanli, Junior Quartet
Especially interested in: Fix-its, AU's (specifics can be discussed), Canon Divergence, Slice of Life, Fluff, Angst with Comfort, Smut, Gender Fuckery™, Rule 63/Cisswap
Ships I don't want to write: SongXueXiao or any pairing involving Su She, Wen Chao, Wen Xu, or Jin Guangshan.
Unwilling to address: Angst with No Comfort, Bathroom Kinks, Underage, Rape (I can make exceptions at my discretion depending on context)
Other notes: I can be fairly flexible! I've worked before with a bidder who wanted an extra written for one of their own stories, I can write requested extras or missing scenes for any of my existing stories/universes, or we can come up with something completely new. I prefer specific prompts, but please allow me some wiggle-room for my own interpretations, we're working on this as a team!
Special interests: F/F ships, Poly ships, Genderswap/genderbending, Canonically trans or nonbinary characters, Trans or nonbinary interpretations of canon characters
This year I've chosen to select specific charities I'd like donations to go towards, and I chose ones that take international donations and that focus their efforts on people of color, children/youths, and LGBTQ+ issues.
Organizations this auction benefits:
In Our Own Voice ["...lifting up the voices of Black women leaders at the national and regional levels in our fight to secure Reproductive Justice for all women, girls, and gender-expansive individuals..."]
Middle East Children's Alliance ["...organization working for the rights and the well-being of children in the Middle East...They are currently responding to the Gaza crisis with medical supplies and emergency assistance for displaced families."]
Never Again Action ["A Jewish-led mobilization against the persecution, detention, and deportation of immigrants in the United States, NAA takes on campaigns against detention centers and ICE training programs, and organizes mutual aid and deportation defense."]
Sherlock's Homes Foundation ["...provides housing, employment opportunities, and a loving support system for homeless LGBTQ+ young adults so that they can live fearlessly as their authentic selves..."]
And that's it really! I'm really excited to be doing FTH again, I loved it the first time and I love feeling like this ridiculous hobby does some material good in the world in a way that's a bit more targeted and magnified than the writing usually does on its own. Financial contributions to good causes isn't something I've been capable of managing in a very long time, but I can spend my time writing a thank you gift for those who can and do ❤

I
The winds had quietened and they gambolled down the hill that
Had seen so many stories in atmospheres of hushed ivy and the
Night had an inky zone now on all that mattered most in the
Changing age. ………………………………………………….
In the old house that overlooked the hill the lights were still
Yellow from the strange isolated man that lived there with the
Shocked grey hair and the countless tales, too, that few were
Known about … only glimmer and glamour, secrets kept hard.
The foxes dallied across the roads by the nights and they
Were never going to be caught and they knew it and that’s
Why they even ventured out before midnight, why they muzzled
At the food bins outside the houses or the gardens in search
Of the cats or the mice, or whatever it is that these animals
Do – for you only ever see them within seconds and then nought.
The schools were back on in January nothingness; the mundane
Dreary walk up the motorway to the high school that
Looked like a building out of a true crime documentary …
The kids were angry that none of the storms had cancelled
The school days, yet; and thus they had to do the jaunts
In the lashing rain and blistering wind that had stopped the
Trains across the nation, had overlorded the news.
Christmas and Hogmany seemed like aeons ago even
Though it was only last month and there was little to go
On with 2024, as a year, save the casual mayhem that happened
On the radio or on one’s phone, with the occasional wowing
Event being one related to a soccer manager announcing his
Decision to vacate at the end of the season or some other
Thing that wasn’t nearly as important as war, except, was:
Only in a civilian way. …………………………………………….
Several of the trees had cracked and were destroyed by the
Storms and many of the folks would miss them because
There was nothing they could do about these giant shards of timber
Lying now on the fields of the park with their clear innards
Outside the gnarly bark and each of them wondered with ease
How easily such a brute branch could kill you if you stood under
It … if you’d been there during that moment in the carnage
When it quit the trunk and thundered down.
II
The cafes have slow businesses and there are various reports from
Week to week about restaurants shutting down, some of them joints
That have been alive for forty years in the city. And there’s not much
To rescue with such incidents, either. Oh, and even some of the
Watering holes, in this nation renowned for alcohol, have had to
Shut the doors also; and on social media these snapshots are met
With sad faces and what not, and it makes one wonder about
The fifty or so people that work in and around that particular
Venue and what on earth they will do for money now that their
Lives have changed. ………………………………………………
But the vans still hurtle buy delivering their parcels and folks
Still go to the supermarket in the busy times all the same.
Some of them even still stop to give the charity magazine seller
A coin or two outside of the revolving doors and when you go
Through said doors the heating in the building is ramped up full
And you sweat or your skin prickles because you’ve just come
Out of the cold and it’s fifteen degrees upgrade in here …
And there are young folks working in the market and there
Are older workers too who have been here, you know, for over
Twelve years. And they play pretty good tunes on the tannoids
High above and you can sing along in a civilian way as you
Go to get your stuff. And there’s this older chap who hasn’t
Worked in the place so long and he is always always always
Cheery and you wonder what gives him the zeal to be friendly
With other folks all the time. ………………………………………
Outside the supermarket the gulls are a bit twitchy and desperate.
And they have grown to picking on the gardens instead, up
In the suburbs, where the humans feed the seeds and bread to
The pigeons and blackbirds (the likable birds). But really it’s free
For any squirrel or rat, whomever, to come and rage at the output.
Following the latest storm, the wind has blown off the fencing
From several of the neighbourhood gardens as well and since
The residents are a bit older now they have hired other workers
To come fix it rather than try and hail up the fences themselves.
Which must be a sad fact to them, that they haven’t the physical
Verve anymore (although some of them are in their 70s, so no shame.)
Brave daffodils and bluebells poke from the fields and woods
In little miraculous pockets of colour, the way they always do;
And they are a cheerful sight indeed alongside the muddled streets.
III
The city is over half a million folks now which is quite a hefty
Number of people if you think about it and I remember when I
Was a kid it was about a hundred thousand less than that, and that
Makes me feel old and I suppose I am getting pretty old … and even
Though I’ve lived most of my life in a leafy suburb which is quite
Detached from Edinburgh, there even seethes this sense of quick-turning
Change, even here, in a place that never quite belonged to urbanity
From what I recall in youth. With the stark differences in the weather
And the way people act differently with technology, most things are
Moving far too fast and it didn’t move that way when you were a boy.
Or perhaps I’ve just come into the thirties with a shock, knowing I
Won’t live forever. Edinburgh is still alive, though, and I am too,
For now at least. Even though it’s night and black outside and lost
And changing, it still has an erratic pulse. ……………………………..

The National Dog Survey 2024: Insights into Dog Ownership Trends and Challenges in the UK
As guardians of canine well-being, dog owners in the UK play a vital role in shaping the lives of their pets. The National Dog Survey 2024, an initiative by Dogs Trust, has reached an all-time high in participation, highlighting evolving trends in dog ownership, emerging behavioral challenges, and the impact of economic pressures on pet care. The results from this extensive survey provide essential data to aid Dogs Trust in tailoring their support programs to the needs of dog owners across the UK.
Record-Breaking Participation in the 2024 Survey
The National Dog Survey 2024 attracted over 350,000 participants, a record-breaking number that underscores a growing interest in dog welfare and the eagerness of owners to voice their experiences. This increase in feedback, covering details of nearly 348,533 dogs, offers Dogs Trust a valuable, comprehensive view of the current dog ownership landscape.
Key Topics of the National Dog Survey 2024
The survey explored several essential themes concerning dog ownership in the UK, including:
Behavioral Challenges: Addressing common issues such as aggression, anxiety, and training difficulties.
Economic Impact: Examining how financial pressures influence spending on pet care.
Owner-Dog Relationship: Analyzing how the pandemic and lifestyle changes have affected the bond between dogs and owners.
Ownership Trends: Tracking shifts in popular dog breeds, acquisition rates, and demographics.
Behavioral Challenges in Dog Ownership
Common Behavioral Issues Faced by Dog Owners
The survey highlighted several behavioral issues commonly encountered by dog owners, including:
Excessive Barking and Chewing
Separation Anxiety
Inappropriate Elimination
Destructive Digging
These behaviors often stem from boredom, stress, or inadequate training. Understanding these challenges has allowed Dogs Trust to develop resources such as the Behaviour Support Line, a free service offering expert guidance to help owners manage and mitigate these behaviors.
Supporting New Owners in Addressing Behavior Problems
With a surge in new dog owners post-pandemic, training and socialization have emerged as critical areas of concern. The survey found that 37% of owners had acquired their dogs since 2020, many of whom are first-time pet owners unaccustomed to handling behavioral complexities. In response, Dogs Trust offers a range of educational resources and support programs to assist these owners.
Economic Pressures and Pet Care Spending
Rising Costs Impacting Dog Owners
The economic landscape has significantly influenced pet care in recent years, with 78% of survey participants reporting that financial strain has impacted their ability to care for their pets as they wish. The following areas are most affected:
Pet Food Choices: Many owners are switching to budget-friendly brands or buying in bulk to reduce costs.
Veterinary and Training Expenses: The survey revealed that 22% of dog owners have scaled back on these services due to financial constraints.
Adapting to Financial Challenges
In light of these economic challenges, Dogs Trust is exploring ways to offer affordable resources and guidance for dog owners. Initiatives like free behavioral support lines and cost-saving tips have been well-received by participants, reflecting the charity’s commitment to providing ongoing support to the dog-owning community.
Shifts in Dog Ownership Trends
Breed Preferences: Rising Popularity of Crossbreeds
According to the survey, part-breed dogs now make up 11% of the UK’s dog population, with cross breeds such as Cocker Spaniel/Poodle crosses (Cockapoos), Labradoodles, and Cavoodles gaining popularity. These breeds are celebrated for their temperaments, intelligence, and compatibility with family life, making them appealing to a broad spectrum of owners.
The Pandemic’s Influence on Dog Acquisition
The survey reports that the pandemic triggered a significant rise in pet ownership, with 36% of dog-owning households acquiring a dog within the past three years. While this trend indicates a positive interest in dog ownership, it has also posed new challenges in terms of behavior and socialization, as not all new owners were prepared for the responsibilities involved.
Age Trends in Dog Ownership
Data from the survey suggest that the pandemic led to an increase in younger dogs within UK households, as more families adopted puppies. This “pandemic puppy boom” highlights the need for support in early-stage dog training and care, areas that Dogs Trust addresses through specialized resources and educational initiatives.
Insights into Dogs Trust’s Support Programs
Behavior Support Line: Addressing Owner Concerns
A prominent feature of the Dogs Trust’s initiatives is the Behaviour Support Line, a free service designed to assist dog owners with behavioral challenges. Using the data gathered from the survey, Dogs Trust has tailored this program to address issues such as aggression, anxiety, and training difficulties, providing personalized support to ensure the well-being of both pets and their owners.
Impactful Programs for Improved Canine Welfare
Beyond behavior management, Dogs Trust is actively engaged in programs that support various aspects of dog welfare:
Educational Resources: Covering topics from socialization to obedience training, helping new and experienced dog owners alike.
Affordable Veterinary Support: Providing guidance to owners affected by financial hardship.
Advocacy for Responsible Ownership: Campaigning for policies that promote responsible dog ownership and care standards.
These programs have become integral in fostering a supportive environment for dog owners, helping them overcome challenges and strengthen the bond with their pets.
Conclusion
The National Dog Survey 2024 has painted a comprehensive picture of dog ownership in the UK, highlighting both the joys and challenges faced by owners. As the landscape of pet ownership continues to evolve, organizations like Dogs Trust play a crucial role in supporting owners through education, behavioral support, and financial guidance. By leveraging survey insights to shape their initiatives, Dogs Trust remains dedicated to enhancing the welfare of dogs and their owners, ensuring that every dog has the opportunity to lead a fulfilling, healthy life.

As Perth's skyline continues to evolve, window cleaners are encountering some of the most unique and unexpected challenges in their profession. From collaborating with beekeepers to cleaning underwater-themed restaurants, these tasks highlight the diversity and unpredictability of window cleaning in our city. Here are the top ten most unusual and interesting window cleaning jobs in Perth for 2024, showcasing the skill and adaptability of our local professionals.
1. Collaborating with Bees on a Rooftop
In East Perth, a team of window cleaners found themselves sharing a high-rise workspace with a swarm of bees. Their mission was to clean the windows without disturbing the bees while coordinating with an apiarist to safely relocate the swarm. Using low-noise equipment and moving cautiously to prevent vibrations, the cleaners worked meticulously alongside the beekeeper. Their combined efforts ensured both the successful cleaning of the windows and the safe relocation of the bees, demonstrating professionalism and environmental stewardship.
2. Refreshing Windows of a "Haunted" Heritage House
A heritage property in Fremantle, famous for its ghostly tales, required a thorough window cleaning. The team reported strange noises and flickering lights during their work, adding an eerie atmosphere to the task. Approaching the job with curiosity and caution, they worked in pairs and ensured they finished before dusk. Despite sudden temperature drops near certain windows, they remained focused and restored the sparkle to the old house, earning commendations for their courage and dedication.
3. Upside-Down Cleaning for Charity
To raise funds for a local charity, a group of professional window cleaners performed their duties upside-down while harnessed to a skyscraper in Perth's CBD. After weeks of extensive training to perfect their techniques and ensure safety, they used specialized harnesses and controlled movements to prevent smearing the glass. The event not only attracted substantial donations but also provided onlookers with a thrilling spectacle, turning a routine job into an exciting community event.
4. Maintaining an Underwater-Themed Restaurant's Illusion
A trendy restaurant in Scarborough with an underwater theme required window cleaners to preserve its oceanic illusion. The windows, coated with a special blue tint, needed careful cleaning to remove grime without damaging the effect. Working during off-hours to avoid disturbing diners, the cleaners used specialized microfiber cloths and unique cleaning solutions. Multiple inspections under different lighting ensured the windows remained streak-free and the underwater ambiance intact, contributing to the restaurant's immersive atmosphere.
5. Cleaning Solar Panel-Integrated Windows
In Subiaco, an eco-friendly suburb, window cleaners faced the challenge of cleaning windows integrated with solar panels on a commercial building. These panels demanded specialized techniques to avoid damage and maintain optimal energy efficiency. Using non-abrasive tools and purified water, the cleaners prevented scratches and residue that could hinder the panels' performance. Coordinating with building management to temporarily shut off power ensured safety, resulting in spotless windows that continued to contribute to the building's green energy goals.
6. Navigating the "Sky Garden" Apartments
A luxury apartment building in South Perth featured windows adorned with small gardens, presenting a significant challenge for window cleaners. They had to carefully maneuver around plant beds without dislodging soil or leaves onto the areas below. This task involved meticulous planning, including laying protective tarps on lower levels and using extended tools for hard-to-reach spots. The cleaners even took on some gardening duties by watering plants as they worked, demonstrating adaptability and precision in maintaining both the windows and the greenery.
7. Enduring Extreme Heat During a Heatwave
During Perth's scorching summer heatwave, window cleaners undertook the task of cleaning a major retail building amid temperatures exceeding 40°C. To cope with the extreme conditions, they adjusted their schedules to work during early mornings and late evenings, staying hydrated and using cooling vests. Special cleaning solutions were used to prevent rapid evaporation. Their dedication and resilience ensured the building's windows remained spotless despite the challenging weather.
8. Cleaning Animal Enclosure Windows at Perth Zoo
Window cleaners faced an extraordinary task at Perth Zoo, cleaning the windows of predator enclosures, including those housing lions. With the curious big cats observing and sometimes pawing at the glass, the cleaners had to move carefully to avoid startling the animals. Using extra-long poles to maintain a safe distance, they focused on delivering clean windows while ensuring a calm environment for the animals. This job tested their nerves and skills, emphasizing safety and respect for wildlife.
9. Working on the Giant Public Aquarium
The large public aquarium in Perth required expert window cleaners to maintain the clarity of massive glass panels separating marine life from visitors. This unique environment meant working surrounded by water with marine animals, such as sharks, swimming just inches away. The team used scuba gear for certain sections, working both inside and outside the tanks. Special non-toxic cleaning agents were essential to protect the marine life, combining their cleaning expertise with underwater skills for an unforgettable project.
10. Preserving Art on Window Murals
In Northbridge, a new art installation featured intricate murals painted on windows. Window cleaners were tasked with cleaning these windows without damaging or smudging the artwork. Collaborating closely with the artist, they identified areas requiring extra caution. Using gentle, precise tools, they carefully cleaned around the murals, ensuring the glass remained clear without affecting the art. This meticulous job elevated window cleaning to an artistic endeavor, highlighting their attention to detail and respect for creativity.
Conclusion
Window cleaning in Perth has proven to be anything but ordinary in 2024. From collaborating with beekeepers and working in extreme weather to engaging with wildlife and preserving art, these unusual projects demonstrate the versatility and expertise of window cleaners in Perth. Each task presents its own set of challenges, making no two days the same in this dynamic profession.

With the rise in Hurricane activity we need to be attentive to two things. The first is the issue of climate change which is responsible for both the active weather conditions and the rising sea levels. The second is the need to develop our sense of preparedness in order to respond to natural disasters.
The above NPR program offers an in-depth description of the first point. There are two lessons that climate editor Rachel Waldholz offers us which we need to take seriously in the aftermath of Hurricanes Helene and Milton.
First, everyone in the path of Hurricanes needs to pay attention to their local officials and listen to evacuation orders.
Second, the U.S. has to be prepared to see more storms like this as long as more warming continues and this means lowering the use of fossil fuels.
A third lesson that I want to highlight is that we need to refrain and call out politically biased misinformation that attempts to delegitimize government and organizational disaster responses. I addressed this in a recent post in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene and I offer the USA Today analysis below in light of Hurricane Milton.
For us Catholics we have the added wisdom of our Holy Father and the Catholic social tradition. In his exhortation, Laudato Deum, Pope Francis adds his voice to the moral lessons of climate change.
Despite all attempts to deny, conceal, gloss over or relativize the issue, the signs of climate change are here and increasingly evident. No one can ignore the fact that in recent years we have witnessed extreme weather phenomena, frequent periods of unusual heat, drought and other cries of protest on the part of the earth that are only a few palpable expressions of a silent disease that affects everyone. Admittedly, not every concrete catastrophe ought to be attributed to global climate change. Nonetheless, it is verifiable that specific climate changes provoked by humanity are notably heightening the probability of extreme phenomena that are increasingly frequent and intense. (LD #5)
Our faith calls us to be attentive to the "signs of the times" from the prism of hope and action that comes from the Gospel message. In his 2024 Care for Creation message Pope Francis reminds us that "To hope and act with creation, then, means above all to join forces and to walk together with all men and women of good will."
Next week a CCBQ colleague and I will be going to a training to be part of the national Catholic Charities Disaster Response Academy and receive our Disaster Case Management Cerificate. We anticipate that this will aide us in coordinating our own local response while preparing us to nationally serve in other crisis areas. Catholic Charities USA is currently receiving donations and support to continue responding to the victims of Hurricane Helene and to begin mobilizing resources for the victims of Hurricane Milton.
We need to work together to address the challenges we face by changing our own lifestyle, advocating for social solutions, and responding to the natural crises that impacts our communities. Faith based communities like the Catholic Church and its Catholic Charities agencies grants us these opportunities to bring hope to those in need.
We need to be guided by the hopeful message of our faith tradition rather than politically distorted messages.

Social Media Governance: The CSR Imperative for Protecting Influencers
The changing outlook of influencer marketing
According to Stockmann, Schlosser, and Ksatryo (2023), social media governance means policies and practices guiding online behavior, which is increasingly crucial in influencer marketing. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), the ethical conduct of businesses towards stakeholders (Etikan 2024), is a key pillar of this governance. Hence, the important partners in brand promotion - influencers deserve protection and support from the brands they represent.
The ethical responsibility of brands
CSR extends beyond traditional charity activities; it shows a company's entire relationship with its stakeholders, including influencers. Brands that engage influencers have a responsibility to ensure their well-being, both online and offline. This includes protecting them from the harmful effects of online hate and harassment, which can have severe repercussions on their mental health and career. For example, Samsung launched a campaign called Ninh Duong Story x Samsung to announce the new product Samsung Galaxy A35 on their Facebook channel with hashtags #Samsung #GalaxyA35 5G #AwesomeUngVanBien (Duy 2024a). The participation of the Ninh Duong couple in advertising campaigns for Samsung in Vietnam has shown a new era of recognition and acceptance for the LGBTQ+ community on social media. However, there are still some negative comments about the influencers such as anti-lgbtq+, blaming their appearances (Duy 2024b). Therefore, this urges brands to take responsibility for booking influencers on social media.
The power of social media governance
Effective social media governance involves establishing clear guidelines for online conduct, providing resources for dealing with negativity, and fostering a culture of respect and inclusivity (Linke & Zerfass 2013). Hence, brands like Samsung in that case study can implement policies that prohibit hateful comments on their influencer's posts and actively promote positive interactions. They can also offer training and support to influencers on how to manage online negativity and protect their mental health.
Benefits for brands, influencers, and society
When brands prioritize influencer well-being, it's a win-win situation for all involved. Influencers feel valued and empowered, leading to more authentic and engaging content. Brands benefit from stronger relationships with influencers, increased brand loyalty, and a more positive brand image. Ultimately, a healthier online environment is fostered, where respect and positivity prevail.
The future of influencer marketing
As influencer marketing grows, social media governance will play an increasingly critical role. Brands that embrace ethical practices and prioritize the well-being of their influencers will not only reap the rewards of a successful marketing strategy but also contribute to a more responsible and inclusive digital landscape.

Church and charity leaders call for end to two-child limit
The two-child limit on benefits is leaving families in “acute hardship”, Christian leaders have said.
The Child Poverty Action Group (CPAG) and the Church of England are calling on the new Labour government to abolish the controversial policy this year.
Under the current policy, benefit payments for most families are limited to two children for those born after 6 April 2017. Charities say this has resulted in families losing thousands of pounds a year for additional children born after that time.
Figures published by HM Revenue & Customs and the Department for Work and Pensions today reveal that the policy affected a record 1.6m children in the year to April 2024, up from 1.5m in the previous year.
A survey of 560 affected families by CPAG found that nearly half (45%) were struggling to pay their rent or mortgage because of the policy, while a similar proportion (46%) were finding it difficult to manage childcare costs.
Most families (93%) said the policy had affected their ability to pay for food, while 82% reported struggling to cover gas or electricity bills.
Some parents reported keeping children out of school because they could not afford basic items like shoes, while some mothers had been forced to cut their maternity leave short because they needed to work.
One single parent in full-time work said their child could no longer take GCSE PE because of associated costs.
“One of my children was on a pathway to play under 14’s England netball team but had to stop, I just couldn’t pay monthly fees and take them to training and games,” they said.
One working mother said: “My number one reason for doing anything is my children, yet when I watch them queuing in a foodbank with me because I physically can’t provide for them, I feel horrific, it makes you feel like an absolute failure.”
Chief Executive of Child Poverty Action Group Alison Garnham said: “Children are losing their life chances to the two-child limit now — they can’t wait for the new government to align every star before the policy is scrapped.
“The PM came to office pledging a bold, ambitious child poverty-reduction plan and there’s no way to deliver on that promise without scrapping the two-child limit, and fast. This is not the time for procrastination or prevarication — the futures of 1.6 million children are on the line.”
The Bishop of Leicester, Martyn Snow, said: “The testimonies in this report remind us that the two-child limit continues to affect the wellbeing and life chances of too many children and families in this country. Abolishing this unfair policy is essential if we are to turn the tide on poverty and ensure that every child is supported to flourish in all areas of life.”

Alauddin Siddiqui Trust : Ashura 2024
Introduction :
Ashura is a significant day observed on the 10th day of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic lunar calendar. It holds profound religious and historical importance for Muslims worldwide. Ashura commemorates the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, and his companions at the Battle of Karbala in 680 CE. This solemn occasion is marked by rituals of mourning, reflection, and acts of charity, known as Muharram donations, which play a crucial role in supporting humanitarian causes and community welfare.
Understanding the Historical Context of Ashura :
Martyrdom at Karbala
The Battle of Karbala was a pivotal event in Islamic history, where Imam Hussain and his followers stood against the forces of Yazid, the Umayyad caliph, in defense of justice and righteousness. Imam Hussain's refusal to pledge allegiance to Yazid, whom he deemed unjust, led to a tragic confrontation resulting in the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, his family members, and companions. The bravery and sacrifice displayed at Karbala have since inspired Muslims to uphold principles of integrity, compassion, and resistance against oppression.
Significance of Muharram Donation :
1. Fulfilling Religious Obligations
Muharram donations hold deep religious significance in Islam, emphasizing the virtue of charity (sadaqah) and generosity towards others. Muslims are encouraged to give during Muharram as a means of honoring Imam Hussain's sacrifice and following the teachings of Prophet Muhammad, who emphasized the importance of caring for the less fortunate. These donations serve as a form of worship and spiritual purification, fostering a sense of empathy and communal solidarity.
2. Supporting Humanitarian Causes
Muharram donations play a crucial role in addressing societal inequalities and supporting vulnerable populations. Funds collected during this period are allocated towards various charitable initiatives, including food distribution, healthcare services, education scholarships, and community development projects. These efforts aim to alleviate poverty, improve quality of life, and empower individuals to become self-sufficient members of society.
Impact of Muharram Donations :
Empowering Communities
Through Muharram donations, communities receive vital resources and support to foster sustainable development. Initiatives such as vocational training programs, microfinance projects, and infrastructure improvements enable beneficiaries to enhance their livelihoods and achieve economic stability. By investing in community empowerment, donors contribute to long-term prosperity and social resilience.
Enhancing Educational Opportunities
Education is a cornerstone of progress and empowerment supported by Muharram donations. Funds are allocated towards building schools, providing scholarships, and enhancing educational facilities to ensure equitable access to learning. By investing in education, donors promote literacy, critical thinking, and skill development among youth, empowering them to pursue brighter futures and contribute positively to society.
Promoting Healthcare Access
Access to healthcare is essential for maintaining well-being and preventing illness within communities. Muharram donations support medical clinics, mobile health units, and public health campaigns aimed at improving healthcare access and awareness. These initiatives address healthcare disparities, promote preventive care, and ensure that individuals receive necessary medical treatment, thereby enhancing overall health outcomes.
Challenges and Opportunities :
Sustainability of Initiatives
One of the challenges faced by organizations collecting Muharram donations is ensuring the sustainability of their programs beyond the observance period. Strategic planning, donor engagement, and effective resource management are essential to maintaining continuous support for ongoing projects and expanding outreach to more beneficiaries.
Building Trust and Transparency
Maintaining trust and transparency in donation management is crucial for fostering donor confidence and accountability. Organizations must uphold ethical standards, provide clear financial reporting, and communicate impact effectively to stakeholders. Building strong relationships with donors and community members ensures mutual understanding and support for charitable endeavors.
Conclusion :
In conclusion, Ashura and Muharram donations exemplify the enduring principles of compassion, justice, and solidarity within the Muslim community. By commemorating the martyrdom of Imam Hussain through acts of charity, Muslims reaffirm their commitment to humanitarian values and social responsibility. Muharram donations not only provide immediate relief to those in need but also contribute to sustainable development, empowerment, and community resilience. As Muslims worldwide observe Ashura and participate in Muharram donations, they embody the spirit of selflessness and generosity, striving to create a more equitable and compassionate world for all.

Andy Robison- Mental Health On Tour
Andy Robison is a freelance front-of-house sound engineer and production manager.
Robinson has worked with big names like Beabadoobee, and Ashnikko but has mixed for every sort of artist and bands. For the past twelve years, Andy has been working in the realm of live music, for the past nine years he’s been touring all around the world but worked at his local O2 arena when attending the University of Leicester. Robinson was lucky enough to meet award winning band Wolf Alice just before their success and started touring with them for a year. Andy has stated that touring with Wolf Alice allowed him to put his foot in the door of the industry which led to him getting more work in the future.
Andy is very open about every part of his job and doesn’t shy away from the more realistic topics. He says “The best part about my job is I get to travel the world” he speaks about the people and friends he has met whilst doping so and speaks about all the existing adventures they all have, on the flip side of this he speaks about how the job is very fun but does come with some drawbacks like long hours, the unsocial hours, spend a good chunk of time is in forms of transportation, his longest day on the job was 27 hours, this included flying to LA setting up doing the show packing down and the travelling back to his accommodation for the night. Andy shared that at the beginning of his career, he loved the travelling side to his work, visiting all these new countries however as time goes by he has since found that the travelling side can at times be a tedious task and can absolutely have effects on his relationships, and family dynamics sacrificing not being around for big family events.
When speaking about how being on the road can really affect your mental health Andy caught my attention. He said ‘There are many things that contribute to the effects of your mental health on tour, some of these might be the food that you’re eating’ ‘Sometimes tours are catered for and that's amazing, but often I find myself eating junk food and a lot of Deliveroo food’
This is something that I would keep in mind because a big part of my life is diet and physical activity, I will try and eat as many whole foods as I can and try to stay away from fast food and junk chemical foods.
Another aspect of mental health Andy speaks about is the stress and pressure of the job. “Personally, I like the pressure and stress” he feels that when in these situations he can often pull off some of the best shows that he has worked on. This is the complete opposite of me, when stressed and under pressure, I tend to shut down and lose my train of thought, so I applaud Andy to have the capability to achieve such results in stressful situations.
A report from Music Ally written by Stuart Dredge shares the comparison in musicians with mental health problems pre-Covid and post-Covid.
‘The comparison with pre-Covid numbers show a 396% increase in mental health consultations and a 357% rise in numbers of patients' (Dredge, 2024)
Stuart Dredge also wrote another article, this one focusing on a charity called ‘Music, Minds, Matter.’ this article is dedicated to helping the organisation set up a stand-alone charity that focuses on ‘mental health and the twin pressures of touring and social media.’
Whilst Andy isn’t the most active on social media he is always on the job, whether it’s a stand-alone show or a run of shows Andy is always on the job and charity could be a massive help in terms of his al health when on the road.
“Creation of the new charity will mean all fundraising income generated for mental health by the charity is solely dedicated to improving mental health,”
Since opening the charity, the call lines to ‘Help Musicians’ have risen by 30% in the last year. (Dredge, 2024)
I think that the call stats have risen due to the company being so public about the fact that the mental health portion of the company is now a separate company. The publicity of this change has opened up the eyes of people who are struggling with mental health issues.
If I could sum up meeting Andy and hearing his talk, I would say I came away from it with more interest towards the behind the scenes side of touring, his honesty was very insightful and has made me consider getting into his side of the industry.

Finding Refuge: The Healing Power of World of Warcraft Communities.
In recognition of Mental Health Awareness week, running between the 13th to the 19th of May 2024, the Starship community and guild are proud to embrace a diverse array of personalities, cultures and life experiences from around the globe. Our members enter the World of Warcraft to find respite from the demands of everyday life and to safeguard their mental well being.
Individuals from all walks of life come together with a common goal to seek solace and enjoyment in the virtual realm of Azeroth. Whether it's a student facing academic pressures, a professional navigating work schedules, or a caregiver shouldering immense responsibilities, each person finds refuge within the friendship and events offered by our community.
The World of Warcraft serves as a safe place for many, providing a temporary escape from the stressors and uncertainties that follow our real life obligations. Engaging and collaborating with fellow community members fosters a sense of purpose and accomplishment, offering a much needed reprieve from daily life. Our community recognises the profound impact of mental health and prioritises the well being of all members.
In our Starship community, we prioritise collaboration with other gaming brands to foster a supportive and inclusive environment for mental health. Our partnerships with industry leaders such as Blizzard, Raider.IO, and Zygor enables us to commit to breaking down barriers and stigmas surrounding mental health while also offering valuable support and guidance to our community.
Did you know:
1 in 4 people experience mental health issues
1 in 5 have or will have suicidal thoughts over the course of a lifetime
Only a third of people with a mental health issue seek and receive treatment
Mental health support within the gaming community is an important issue that needs to be addressed. With the rise of online gaming and the prevalence of social interaction within these virtual environments, it is crucial to provide resources and support for individuals who maybe struggling with mental health. Gaming communities can play a significant role in promoting mental well being by opening the conversation and embracing the subject of mental health.
We in Starship are proud to partner with our charity, Safe In Our World who aim to foster mental health awareness within the video game industry, eliminate stigma surrounding mental health and to make it a natural topic of discussion.
We spoke to Rosie Taylor, Content and Community Manager from Safe in our World to find out more!
Can you share with us how Safe In Our World is contributing to mental health awareness within the gaming community?
Safe In Our World at its core is championing for mental health awareness, education, and wellbeing for both gamers and games industry professionals. We are creating opportunities for both through a variety of initiatives aimed at broadening mental health awareness as well as more tangible outputs through training and direct collaborations. Our website, SafeInOurWorld.org is a global hub of information, helplines, support, and stories connected to mental health and video games culture. We want gamers to be able to easily find information that is explained in a unique way, by using games as a vehicle to portray important messages and experiences.
In what ways do you believe the gaming industry can better prioritize mental health, both for players and creators?
One easy way for games industry companies to get more involved in wellbeing for their teams is to join our Level Up Mental Health programme. It’s free to join, and is a commitment to take mental health and wellbeing more seriously for their teams and player bases. By joining, Safe In Our World will work with you directly to bring you relevant resources, offer advice and support, consultation and training to create safer environments for employees and communities alike. We’re already working with over 160 companies worldwide, with more joining every week.
Another way that the industry can prioritize mental health is through the games themselves. We actively work with developers to create content warnings to better inform players on the potential triggers that could affect them in gameplay. We recommend that game developers actively pursue opportunities to collaborate with mental health charities, mental health professionals and folks with lived experience to truly tackle mental health representation and safety more seriously within video games. This extends to portrayal of mental ill health, language, stigma and resources for players during gameplay.
There are so many practical things companies can do to take steps towards prioritising wellbeing, but one of the most important steps is a more passive one; listening. It can be so easy to assume you know what people need or want. By providing spaces for feedback, actively listening to it, and implementing feedback-informed change can be a huge step in instilling more trust within your community and employees, which has a knock on effect on wellbeing culture.
How do you see the role of community managers evolving in addressing mental health concerns within gaming communities?
The role of the Community Manager is often endless. Constantly having to be on guard, listening and being the go-to person for a whole community of people is rewarding, but also exhausting. I’d love to see more support provided to Community Managers from leadership to provide them with opportunities to learn, take part in training and also switch off from their role. At Safe In Our World, we have a free Community Manager Toolkit to aid in this, but would highly recommend in employers investing in training to better equip their teams to deal with these sorts of things. We have a duty of care to players to signpost them to where they can get support, but we don’t have a duty to be personally responsible for those people’s mental health. Senior leadership has a duty to set these expectations and support Community Managers in setting boundaries in relation to this, so that Community Managers can handle these situations in a way that is safer for both parties. We have a guide on how to more empathetically signpost that should explain how we can do this in a responsible way.
Could you elaborate on any specific initiatives or strategies that Safe in Our World has implemented to support mental well-being in the gaming space?
We recently co-created the Good Game Playbook in collaboration with Ubisoft, which has been a great initiative targeting players who are either being impacted by toxic behaviour in-game, or players who are being toxic in-game. This is just the first step in learning how we can create safer online spaces for gamers, informing us of the real issues that gamers face and leading to solutions of how developers can better protect players from toxic behaviours.
We’re also now offering game consultation and content warning support to developers who want to get mental health representation ‘right’ in their game. By offering clinical support and lived experience perspectives, we’re creating a more honest environment for developers to learn about how best to represent certain mental health diagnoses or related issues in a non-stigmatising way.
What advice would you offer to gaming communities striving to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for individuals struggling with mental health issues?
I’d hugely recommend having a good signposting and peer support structure in place within community spaces. By being more open and non-stigmatising about mental health in general, people may feel more able to speak out about their feelings and wellbeing, as well as ask for support. Having these resources to hand as a community to equip individuals with the tools they need to access support is a huge step in the right direction.
One thing I’d also say, is that often the games communities that we foster represent those within them. As community managers, it is imperative to foster the environment you want to see, rather than expect for it to just show up. Sometimes that can mean having difficult conversations with community members and enforcing boundaries by protecting your community from unwelcome behaviours or attitudes.
Consider people’s feedback, especially if they’re from a group that is marginalised by society or underrepresented. There is no ‘one-size-fits-all’ when it comes to creating an inclusive space and it will be an ongoing task as you learn more and grow as a community.
From your perspective, what are some common misconceptions surrounding mental health within the gaming industry, and how can we combat them?
One of the more common misconceptions relating to mental health in gaming for me is that games are inherently good or bad for your mental health. I think it’s clear (at least to me) that games have the power to create powerful experiences for players, tell important stories, share unique perspectives and foster incredible communities. There are also negatives that games bring that stem from toxicity and inability to manage emotions during play. I’d love for players to focus more on how they feel before, during and after they play games, and make more conscious decisions on how they can switch up their gameplay habits to adapt to their mood. For some, that might mean playing more FPS when they’re frustrated, and for some that might mean sitting down with a cosy non-violent RPG and settling in for the night. Those decisions look totally different from player to player, and that’s kind of the point; gaming is a unique experience that will evoke different feelings for different people. By embracing your own relationship to the games you play, you can create much healthier habits and celebrate the positives that games can bring more easily.
In your experience, what are some effective ways to encourage open dialogue about mental health within gaming communities?
Sharing stories! One of the things that always gets the room open to conversation (in my experience) is nonjudgmentally listening to others tell their experiences and share stories. More often than not, you see other people who have experienced something very similar who feel closer to other community members in that solidarity alone.
Sharing is not always simple or easy for people, so by fostering a community where talking about mental health is normal, and not shameful, can be a great start in setting that tone for others.
Looking ahead, what do you envision as the future of mental health advocacy within the gaming industry, and how can organizations like Starship continue to drive positive change?
Seeing more companies, individual communities and organisations really empower each other to do better, and have healthy competition in providing support to their teams and communities would be amazing. I want to see companies shouting about all the work that they do to support people, not have it as a one liner on a job description, or in the tiny text at the bottom of their website. Be bold about your work, listen to how you can improve, and make those changes transparently.
