The singer Lonnie Donegan was born on April 29th 1931 in Bridgeton Glasgow.

Donegan was born Anthony James Donegan, the son of a Scottish father and Irish mother. His father was a professional violinist who had played with the Scottish National Orchestra.

He moved with his mother to London at an early age, after his parents divorced. Inspired by blues music and New Orleans jazz bands he heard on the radio, he resolved to learn the guitar, and bought his first at the age of fourteen. He took his first name after a New Orleans blues singer he admired called Lonnie Johnson.

The first band he ever played in was the trad jazz band led by Chris Barber, who approached him on a train asking him if he wanted to audition for his group. Barber had heard that Donegan was a good banjo player; in fact, Donegan had never played the banjo at this point, but he bought one and managed to bluff his way through the audition. His stint in this group was interrupted, however, when he was called up for National Service in 1949.

In 1952, he formed his first own group, the Tony Donegan Jazzband, which found some work around London. On one occasion they opened for the blues musician Lonnie Johnson at the Royal Festival Hall. Donegan was a big fan of Johnson, and took his first name as a tribute to him. The story goes that the host at the concert got the musicians’ names confused, calling them “Tony Johnson” and “Lonnie Donegan”, and Donegan was happy to keep the name.

Donegan recorded a reworking of an American folk tune, Rock Island Line. Decca released the song in 1956, billed by the Lonnie Donegan Skiffle Group. The record, with its talking sequences, homage to Americana, and fast train shuffle climax, became a major hit in Britain and America. Because he was paid a flat fee for the session, Donegan didn’t receive any royalty payments for his most popular and influential song until the label struck a new deal for him 40 years later. However, Rock Island Line made him a star in his own right and would remain his signature song throughout his career.

From 1956 through 1962, he enjoyed a string of 34 British hits including Puttin’ on the Style and Cumberland Gap, which hit number one in 1957, Don’t You Rock Me Daddy-O, which reached number four in the same year, and the raucous sing-along My Old Man’s a Dustman which climbed to the top of the charts in 1960. It’s not hard to see why Lonnie is regarded as the first real pop star, his fans included the likes of Lennon and McCartney, who’s first group, The Quarrymen were a skiffle group. he Shadows, the Searchers, the Hollies, Herman’s Hermits, Gerry & the Pacemakers, and Cliff Richard all began their musical lives doing skiffle.

As the swinging sixties rolled on Donegans hits dried up but he was always in demand for gigs at home and across the world, he also dabbled in a wee bit acting and his own song publishing business, his most popular song he bought the rights for being Nights in white Satin. In the 70’s he popped upon the occasional TV shows during breaks from touring, in 1972 Tom Jones covered one of Lonnie’s songs and it went top 5 on both sides of the Atlantic. As a performer he continued to record and lease unsuccessful sides to Pye, Decca, Black Lion, and RCA.

A 1976 heart attack forced Donegan into an uneasy semi-retirement in California. Two years later, Chrysalis Records organized an all-star recreation of his early hits Puttin’ on the Style. Produced by former British teen idol Adam Faith and boasting duets with Ringo Starr, Elton John, and Rory Gallagher, it was his last major-selling album. Follow-ups with respected session ace Albert Lee and Cajun-fiddler Doug Kershaw seemed to point him towards country music, but a series of heart attacks in 1979 ended his full-time career.

In later years Donegan made a series of guest appearances with old friend Chris Barber including a featured spot on Van Morrison’s Skiffle Sessions: Live in Belfast 1998. Just before his death, he returned to touring full time, exhibiting much of his classic verve and humour before standing-room-only crowds. Donegan died on November 3rd, 2002, in Peterborough.

I relate at the same to the Beast’s desire to be accepted by the society that fears and looks down his appearance and to Belle’s mixture of fear, curiosity and fascination by the hybrid anthropomorfic creature. And with their great chemistry, the actors Josette Day and Jean Marais really captured those feelings in this classic adaptation directed by Jean Cocteaus

Damiel and Marion (Wings of Desire, 1987)

A 1987 film by Wim Wenders originally called Der Himmel über Berlin (lit: ‘The Heavens Above Berlin’).The film depicts two angels, Damiel and Cassiel, wandering in Cold War era Berlin and listening to the thoughts of humans. Among those humans are an old man looking for the now-destroyed Potsdamer Platz and recalling the good times he used to have there; Peter Falk As Himself; and Marion, a lonely French trapezist desperately looking for a purpose in life.  The angels don’t directly intervene in human existence but sometimes give comfort to humans who need it, like a woman in labor, or a suicidal man on a tram, or a motorcyclist who is dying in the street after he was struck by a car. However, Damiel yearns to be human himself and to experience life as a mortal does. Fantaghirò (known in the english speaking world as The Cave of the Golden Rose) is a series of five television films produced in Italy by Lamberto Bava (Mario Bava’s son), telling the adventures of Fantaghirò, the youngest of three princess sisters, who traines to become a brave warrior as a way to get free of the sexist restrictions imposed at her life by her father. Her kingdom has been at war with a neighbor kingdom for years, and one day the rencently crowned young adversary king, Romualdo, decides to end the war by personally challenging the best champion of Fantaghirò’s kingdom. Fantaghirò, disguised as man, presents herself as this champion, and their love story begins when Romualdo falls in love with the beauty of her eyes. What’s interesting about this couple is how their personalitys complement each other: Fantaghirò with a more combative strong temper, and Romualdo with a more sweet and calm temper.

Marianne Danielle and Doctor Van Helsing (The Brides of Dracula, 1960)

While watching Hammer Horror’s Brides of Dracula, i finded adorable how Doctor Van Helsing cares for Marianne Danielle (whom he befriends while arriving at Transilvania), how he wants to protect her and respects her feelings, to the point of trying contain his sorrow when she announces her engagement with Baron Meinster. I always imagine that when he defeated the Baron (who is revealed to be a vampire), and flee the wind mill with Marianne, he declared his feelings, she reciprocated, he teached her how to fight vampires, they married and became a battle couple searching to purge the world of the vampires. This is a pairing who deservers more love, fanart and fanfiction.

Fininha and Clécio (Tatuagem, 2013)

Tatuagem (Tattoo) is a movie set in the late 1970s, during the period of the Brazilian Civil-Military Dictatorship, that tells the love story between Fininha, an young soldier, and Clécio, an actor and playwrighter who produces satirical plays for a underground theater called Chão de Estrelas (Floor of Stars). Their romance is one of the most sweetest ever captured on film, but we also feel a certain unease that the fact of Fininha being at the service of the military who persecutes the theater artists will break the couple apart at any moment…

Karaba and Kirikou (Kirikou and the Sorceress, 1998)

Kirikou and the Sorceress is a 1998 French animated film, directed by Michel Ocelot, loosely based on a West African fairy tale.  It tells the story of a tiny baby boy, named Kirikou, who is born in a spectacular way (all by himself, without effort of his mother nor outside help) and can speak and walk immediately after being born. After a couple of questions, he learns that a wicked sorceress, Karaba, has cursed the village and devoured all the men and boys, except his uncle, who is on his way to fight the sorceress. He tricks the sorceress, saves his uncle as well as the children of the village (twice!!), brings the water back to the dried-up spring and, among other things, discovers the sorceress’ true motivations: Karaba is evil because of all the suffering she went through at the hands of men, including a very subtly implied rape. All the bad things that she allegedly had done are ultimately proved to be false. She does hate everyone, but she gets better. Despite being a baby, Kirikou asks Karaba in marriage when she pulls a Heel–Face Turn, saying that he doesn’t like little girls. She doesn’t accept, of course, but then her kiss turns him into a handsome young man.

Nina Shah and Lisa MacKinlay (Nina’s Heavenly Delights, 2006)

Nina’s Heavenly Delights is a Rom Com about a cooking contest,  directed by Pratibha Parmar. The death of her father Mohan brings prodigal daughter, Scot with Indian ancestry Nina (Shelley Conn) home again to Glasgow, her mother, siblings - and the family restaurant, “The Taj”. Being able to keep the latter now hinges on the cooking skills Nina learned at her father‘s knees. In the “Best of The West Curry Competition” she will have to face the former fiancé she left at the altar, Sanjay. In this competition, she will count with the partnership of Lisa, who owns half of the restaurant since Mohan’s death and already seems to be very much part of Nina’s family. And in the proccess, Lisa also becomes a part of Nina’s heart… 

Lady and Tramp (Lady and the Tramp, 1955)

I grew up watching VHSs of the old Disney 2-D Animated movies over, and over, and over. And a thing that i find funny is that most people tend to quote movies from the 1990s Disney Renaissance as when Disney Couples started to met each other first instead of fall in love at first sight, bu when we make a retrospective, in actuality it was Lady and Tramp who started the trend. First they met at Lady’s house and have a verbal fight due to diverging points of view about humans, them they encounter each other again at the streets when she flees from Aunt Sarah, and they walk trough the zoo to unleash Ladys muzzle, Tramp takes her to dinner at Tonys (wich us gives Bella Notte, one of the most romantic scenes in movie history)… every step that a real couple takes to meet each other is taken by Lady and Tramp.

Orfeo x Eurydice (Black Orpheus, 1959)

Black Orpheus is a 1959 film, a French production shot in Brazil and in the Portuguese language. It is a retelling of the ancient myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, set in Rio during Carnaval. Orfeo is a trolley conductor who moonlights as a dancer in a samba school. He is engaged to be married to the gorgeous and passionate Mira, but doesn’t seem too enthused about it. On his trolley car, he meets Eurydice, who has arrived in Rio from the countryside because she is being chased by a mysterious man who she thinks is trying to kill her. Orfeo and Eurydice fall in love, but the strange man—Death himself—is still stalking her.

A man has been banned from owning animals after six puppies were found in his vehicle at a Scottish ferry port covered in urine and faeces.

Stephen McRea, 29, from Belfast, was found trying to transport the six collie puppies from Northern Ireland to Stranraer on December 3, 2020, a court has heard.

The poorly pups were all found to be underweight and tested positive for the Parvo virus antigen – and three of them later died. He has since been given a 15-year ban from owning animals.

Police stopped McRea at Loch Ryan Port, Cairnryan, in grey Ford Transit van after it had disembarked from the P&O ferry sailing from Larne Port, Northern Ireland.

Cops noticed a strong, pungent smell of animal urine emanating from the driver’s window.

Six puppies were found in the back of Stephen McRea’s van at a ferry port, covered in urine and faeces.

When they asked McRea what he was carrying he said that he was transporting a “couple of dogs” to a family member in Glasgow.

They searched the van and found six collie-type puppies in a cage in the load space of the vehicle with no food or water.

There were two blankets that were covered in both urine and faeces. All of the puppies were also covered in the excrement, the court was told.

The floor of the load space was covered in sawdust and had traces of dried faeces. The police removed the puppies before handing them over to the Scottish SPCA to be examined by vets.

McRea was sentenced at Stranraer Sheriff Court on Tuesday after previously pleading guilty to failing to take steps to provide the collie puppies with food, water or a suitable place to rest while transporting them.

He was also ordered to carry out 90 hours unpaid work and will be supervised for a year under a community payback order imposed by the court.

Six puppies were found in the back of Stephen McRea’s van at a ferry port, covered in urine and faeces.

The singer Lonnie Donegan was born on April 29th 1931 in Bridgeton Glasgow.

Donegan was born Anthony James Donegan, the son of a Scottish father and Irish mother. His father was a professional violinist who had played with the Scottish National Orchestra.

He moved with his mother to London at an early age, after his parents divorced. Inspired by blues music and New Orleans jazz bands he heard on the radio, he resolved to learn the guitar, and bought his first at the age of fourteen. He took his first name after a New Orleans blues singer he admired called Lonnie Johnson.

The first band he ever played in was the trad jazz band led by Chris Barber, who approached him on a train asking him if he wanted to audition for his group. Barber had heard that Donegan was a good banjo player; in fact, Donegan had never played the banjo at this point, but he bought one and managed to bluff his way through the audition. His stint in this group was interrupted, however, when he was called up for National Service in 1949.

In 1952, he formed his first own group, the Tony Donegan Jazzband, which found some work around London. On one occasion they opened for the blues musician Lonnie Johnson at the Royal Festival Hall. Donegan was a big fan of Johnson, and took his first name as a tribute to him. The story goes that the host at the concert got the musicians’ names confused, calling them “Tony Johnson” and “Lonnie Donegan”, and Donegan was happy to keep the name.

Donegan recorded a reworking of an American folk tune, Rock Island Line. Decca released the song in 1956, billed by the Lonnie Donegan Skiffle Group. The record, with its talking sequences, homage to Americana, and fast train shuffle climax, became a major hit in Britain and America. Because he was paid a flat fee for the session, Donegan didn’t receive any royalty payments for his most popular and influential song until the label struck a new deal for him 40 years later. However, Rock Island Line made him a star in his own right and would remain his signature song throughout his career.

From 1956 through 1962, he enjoyed a string of 34 British hits including Puttin’ on the Style and Cumberland Gap, which hit number one in 1957, Don’t You Rock Me Daddy-O, which reached number four in the same year, and the raucous sing-along My Old Man’s a Dustman  which climbed to the top of the charts in 1960. It’s not hard to see why Lonnie is regarded as the first real pop star, his fans included the likes of Lennon and McCartney, who’s first group, The Quarrymen were a skiffle group. he Shadows, the Searchers, the Hollies, Herman’s Hermits, Gerry & the Pacemakers, and Cliff Richard all began their musical lives doing skiffle.

As the swinging sixties rolled on Donegans hits dried up but he was always in demand for gigs at home and across the world, he also dabbled in a wee bit acting and his own song publishing business, his most popular song he bought the rights for being Nights in white Satin. In the 70’s he popped upon the occasional TV shows during breaks from touring, in 1972 Tom Jones covered one of Lonnie’s songs and it went top 5 on both sides of the Atlantic. As a performer he continued to record and lease unsuccessful sides to Pye, Decca, Black Lion, and RCA.

A 1976 heart attack forced Donegan into an uneasy semi-retirement in California. Two years later, Chrysalis Records organized an all-star recreation of his early hits Puttin’ on the Style. Produced by former British teen idol Adam Faith and boasting duets with Ringo Starr, Elton John, and Rory Gallagher, it was his last major-selling album. Follow-ups with respected session ace Albert Lee and Cajun-fiddler Doug Kershaw seemed to point him towards country music, but a series of heart attacks in 1979 ended his full-time career.

In later years Donegan made a series of guest appearances with old friend Chris Barber including a featured spot on Van Morrison’s Skiffle Sessions: Live in Belfast 1998. Just before his death, he returned to touring full time, exhibiting much of his classic verve and humour before standing-room-only crowds. Donegan died on November 3rd, 2002, in Peterborough.

MAN SOUGHT OVER PIZZA SHOP ARMED ROBBERY IN EDINBURGH…. More than £1,000 has been stolen in an armed robbery at an Edinburgh pizza shop. A man threatened a 21-year-old worker in the basement of Papa John's in South Clerk Street at about 11:15 on Friday and made off with a four-figure sum of cash. Police would not say what weapon the suspect had or the exact amount of money taken. The 21-year-old man was not injured but left "very shaken". The suspect is described as white, about 6ft tall, with a heavy build. He spoke with a Scottish accent and was wearing a black hat, a black scarf covering his face, a large black jacket and faded black jeans that had rips on the legs. He was also wearing black Converse trainers, blue latex gloves and was carrying a black Puma rucksack. Police said they were keen to hear from anyone who was in the Newington area of Edinburgh and may have witnessed the incident. Det Sgt Bob Campbell said: "The area was busy with traffic and pedestrians and anyone who recognises the description of the suspect, or who has any information that can help with our investigation, is asked to contact us as soon as possible."

LOOTERS TARGET FIRE-DAMAGED BAR NEXT TO GLASGOW SCHOOL OF ART…. Looters have raided a bar that was damaged by the fire at the Glasgow School of Art. Intruders are understood to have stolen a quantity of alcohol from Campus. The bar is inside a cordon placed around the block on Sauchiehall Street following last week's devastating fire. A police spokeswoman said inquires were ongoing. Glasgow City Council had earlier warned people not to breach the cordon amid safety fears. Police Scotland said officers were alerted to the raid at about 03:20 on Thursday. A police spokeswoman said: "Inquiries are continuing following a housebreaking at a premises in Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow, around 3.20am on Thursday 21 June." Officials from Glasgow City Council have warned people not to enter the cordon, saying parts of the art school structure could collapse without warning. More than 120 firefighters were involved in fighting the blaze which engulfed the school of art. A number of businesses remain closed, and residents are being restricted on where they can park.

UPDATE: SCOTS ATLANTIC ROWER ABLE TO LEAVE RESCUERS' SHIP…. A Scot who was forced to abandon his bid to row across the North Atlantic has been able to leave his rescuers' ship and enter Canada. Niall Iain Macdonald was making his third attempt in four years to row from the USA to Scotland when he got into difficulty in rough seas. He was rescued by a Canada-bound cargo ship, but had to remain on board until he got permission to come ashore. In a tweet, he has thanked the Canada Border Services Agency. Earlier this week, he had appealed to the agency and Canada's prime minister, Justin Trudeau, for help in entering Canada. Mr Macdonald, who had hoped to row to Stornoway in Lewis, was concerned his rescuers would become caught up in his situation through no fault of their own. Another Scot is making a separate bid to row from the USA to Scotland. Duncan Hutchison, from Lochinver, hopes to complete his challenge in about 90 to 100 days.

SCOTTISH FRUIT AND VEGETABLE GROWTH STRATEGY UNVEILED…. Scottish fruit and vegetable producers have drawn up a new strategy to boost the industry in response to Brexit. Business leaders fear it could be hit by a slowdown in European exports and a shortage of workers once the UK leaves the European Union. The Fruit, Vegetable and Potato Industry Leadership Group wants to support the industry through to 2030. It said the strategy would benefit the nation's health and environment - as well as the economy. The Scottish fruit and vegetable retail market, excluding foodservice, is worth over £1bn. The leadership group includes a wide range of producers as well as Scotland Food and Drink chief executive James Withers. The group's chairman, Allan Bowie, said there was "huge potential" for the sector to grow. He added: "We recognise that the fruit, vegetable and potato sector in Scotland is diverse and each sub-sector has its own distinct challenges and opportunities. "But we believe that if the sector works collectively with a focus on skills, innovation, strengthening the supply chain and developing markets the sector can carve its place in Scotland's food and drink success story." Rural Economy Secretary Fergus Ewing said: "Scotland has some of the healthiest, freshest and highest quality produce anywhere in the world, and there are exciting opportunities ahead for our growers and producers across the fruit, vegetable and potato sector. "There is no doubt that we face challenges, particularly relating to Brexit, but this sector has huge potential if we can increase consumption, displace imports, and capitalise on our reputation internationally."

SOMETIMES STUPID IT JUST NOT ENOUGH: LEARNER DRIVER RAMMED POLICE CAR DURING CHASE…. A learner driver who rammed a police car during a high-speed chase has been banned from the road for 27 months. Isaac McPhee reversed into the officers' vehicle before leaving his van and running away during the incident last August. McPhee, of Dundee, admitted driving dangerously on eight Perthshire roads and in the town of Alyth. The 29-year-old was also ordered to carry out 225 hours unpaid work in the community. McPhee admitted failing to stop for police officers and driving without insurance. Depute fiscal Robbie Brown told Perth Sheriff Court that officers began to chase McPhee on the B952 shortly after midnight. He said: "The accused was maintaining speeds up to 70mph on a single carriageway severely affected by standing water. "The vehicle went through a large area of standing water which caused a malfunction to the engine and it came to a halt. Mr Brown said McPhee's van then reversed into the police car. He said: "It then appeared not to be able to get beyond 20mph (High Speed?) . "It continued into a farm steading and came to a halt. "The accused ran off but he had been recognised and was subsequently apprehended." Solicitor Pauline Cullerton, defending, said: "He fully accepts responsibility for his actions and accepts what he did was reckless and stupid. "There could have been serious harm caused."
