Hii if ur ok with sharing I would love to know what camera you use? I'm a beginner and I'm so lost about what the professional standard even is!! Your photos are so great btw I really wish I could buy a print from you!!!
thanks i appreciate it! One day i'll maybe set up a print shop who knows. I shoot mostly film though im looking at picking up medium format digital camera at some point. But my main camera i work with is the Mamiya RZ67
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The thing is a heavy 5.5 pound monster that shoots 120mm film with a revolving back (can be instantly rotated while still on the camera body to shoot either horizontal or vertical). I really love it because the lenses mamiya produces are just incredible they have gorgeous glass, they're massive so you get a lot of the smooth depth of field people use 4x5 cameras for but with the convenience of shooting roll film (10 shots per roll generally $10-15 per roll now). The camera also has bellows
Tumblr media
which personally i just love the aesthetic of.
Touching on your other thing, there isn't really so much of a professional standard for photography but i would say film is definitely falling out of popularity commerically, its all either full frame slr, or medium format digital now with film for special artsy niche ocassions. But film is absolutely alive and well in the fine art world.
If i had advice for people starting out it would be to try and find someone locally who does photography you can try out a 120mm camera from because it is a whole different world seeing your images come back with that much clarity and detail. 35mm has a specific aesthetic to it that people enjoy but i could never get past how much you lose from the size and i have trouble filling out the full roll cause im way too picky with my shots. Also getting 35mm onto a holder in the darkroom is such a pain, 120mm just glides on instantly no issues. But im biased this is my large camera propaganda.

120 in 2020
My jump into MF was impromptu and luck. I contacted one of the oldest sellers of film stuff in the Manila and asked him if Mamiya 645 is good medium format film to start with.  That time I was just asking for his opinion because I trust the guy knowing he had been in the film business for quite some time. Of course he said yes and to my surprised he said he have two, one is available but have not posted yet. I asked him about it and he said he got it from Japan and only shot 2-3 rolls from it. Thankfully I got the camera, tested it, then closed the deal after a successful test roll.
120 Film
I have always been curious about medium format film. Some film photographers dabble in using a certain film stocks only in 120 and not in 35mm. Why is that?Turn out the film grain in 120 is less noticeable compared to 35mm. Of course that will still vary with the type of film stocks and speed you are going to compare. For example with Ilford HP5 Plus 400 and Delta 3200 which are both available in 35mm and 120. Some film photographers prefer to shoot them in 120 but not in 35mm.Grain is good and it’s one of the main characteristics of film. But I guess there are times that it’s better to make your film shoots look finer with less noticeable grain that is why most professional film photographers prefer to shoot 120 film. The bigger negative of 120 film will also mean that you are able to capture more details to your shots. Hence, scanned images will have higher resolution which will be beneficial when doing big prints. I don’t scan my own negatives yet but I’ve read that it’s a lot easier to scan bigger negatives compared 35mm so that is something to note for with regards to 120 film if you plan to DIY scanning in the future.
645
120 film allows several frame sizes depending on the medium format film camera you are using. The most common ratios are 6x4.5, 6x6, 6x7 & 6x9.
The 6x4.5 cm format is usually referred to as “645” which the smallest among the other format in 120 film. But with that, you can get 15 exposures with a roll of 120 film which is for me is economical.
Mamiya
I am not a geeky type of guy but when it comes to cameras, I am curious enough to know and understand details. Since the resurgence of film photography, film cameras and film stocks prices increased. Nowadays, it’s really hard to get a good deal. But there is one particular brand that catches my attention when looking at medium format systems, that is Mamiya.
Mamiya is a Japanese brand founded by Seiichi Mamiya and Tsunejiro Sugawara in Tokyo. It is best known for its professional-grade medium format cameras and lenses.
Not to get into too much history about the brand but I like its name and its logo. The stylized symbol(two crossed lenses), mostly seen on early Mamiya cameras, was designed by students of Japan Fine Arts School, and stands for the initials of the two founders.
Tumblr media
My first medium format camera is the Mamiya M645 1000s. It came with 55mm f/2.8 lens which is equivalent to about 35mm focal length(my favorite) in 135 film format. What I like about the Mamiya 645 camera systems is because they are modular. You can customize your camera depending on what or how you shoot. They have interchangeable lenses, Finder(Waist-Level Finder or  Metered Prism), film backs, and advance accessories with grips. Unfortunately, the specific model I got does not have option for interchangeable film back(only film roll insert) unlike the Mamiya 645 Pro models and Super. But since it’s among the first generation models, it looks classic, all metal sturdy body. The M645s is quite heavy especially if you are more used to a small and compact 35mm camera. Awkward to hold too when shooting but I think I will get the hang of it eventually. Actually the weight shouldn’t be an issue as it’s more light and compact compared to other medium format film cameras such as Mamiya RB67 & Mamiya RZ67. Also, I like how I can still put it inside my old Lowe Pro Passport sling bag  that I have for a decade.
I really think when it comes to acquiring film cameras, sometimes it’s a matter of luck and destiny. You may want a specific model but it’s not available or it’s way out of your budget. Or if budget isn’t an issue, you can still get the camera you have been lusting for but could come with defects or worst, malfunction. In my case, I am just grateful to have a medium format film camera that I can start shooting with this 2020. It is not perfect, but good enough to make images that I can be happy with. After all, it is just a tool and what matters is the photographs and stories you create out of it.

There is a moment in photo sessions with couples when I realize that I can let go. That doesn't mean stop making photos, instead that I don't have to be in charge of every pose and every action. It's totally normal to be awkward. It's totally normal to feel uncomfortable in front of the camera. For 99.99% of people, being professionally photographed isn't a normal thing in life. But, with a little time, you get comfortable. You feel lighter. You feel like yourself. And I see it. That's the moment I can let go. You're able to feel like yourself and all I'm doing here is capturing the best you-ness we can. 📸 Mamiya RZ67, @kodakprofessional Tri-X 400 • • • • • #filmisnotdead #filmphotography #35mm #analog #film #ishootfilm #believeinfilm #shootfilm #filmcamera #analogphotography #staybrokeshootfilm #filmcommunity #thefilmcommunity #keepfilmalive #istillshootfilm #analoguevibes #filmphotographic #fcstreet #analogfeatures #filmcommunity #filmphotographic #heyfsc #everybodyfilm #restorefrombackup #boxspeedfeature #filmphotomag #shootfilmmag #filmwave https://instagr.am/p/CEU4kQxJFux/

Photographers often complain about camera weight and size. I see it more and more often these days. Especially as mirrorless cameras are getting lighter and smaller. I wanted to share a little perspective based on what professional photographers used to carry on a regular basis. The Mamiya RZ67 is just one example of such a camera, weighing at over 5lb. The reason for sharing this video is to potentially push photographers to stop complaining about camera weight, and for those who do - to just get a lighter camera already.
