At age 106, she is the oldest tattoo artist, or 'mambabatok', from Kalinga in the Philippines.

Whang-od Oggay, born February 17, 1917, also known as Maria Oggay, is a Filipina tattoo artist from Buscalan, Tinglayan, Kalinga, Philippines. She is often described as the "last" and oldest mambabatok (traditional Kalinga tattooist) and is part of the Butbut people of the larger Kalinga ethnic group.

She has been tattooing headhunters and women of the indigenous people of Butbut in Buscalan, Kalinga, since she was 15 years old, but the Butbut warriors who used to earn tattoos by protecting villages or killing enemies no longer exist. Despite this, Whang-od continues to practice her traditional art form on tourists visiting Buscalan.

Unlike the majority of Filipinos, she does not speak Tagalog or English. She only communicates in Kalinga, her native language, and Ilocano, one of northern Luzon's lingua franca. (x)

Spend weeks getting inked at Buscalan Tattoo Village in Tinglayan Kalinga.

Home to the butbut tribe and the world famous Apo Whang-Od (or Fang-Od), the last mambabatok. Before, "Batok" [the traditional hand-tapped Filipino tattoo] is primarily given to headhunters as a symbol of honor for protecting villages or for killing enemies. Given that headhunting and tribe wars are just stories of the past, this sacred art of tattooing has now become part of Buscalan's various attractions.

Prior to my trip, I made prior arrangements with a local guide in Buscalan. I've been planning for so long to get an arm sleeve tattoo etched on my skin made by her apprentices and the signature 3 dots from Apo Whang Od. It is something that I considered as a legendary trademark and not everybody will have the opportunity to be tattooed by her. She is a 106 years old already. Time is flying. I need to get that tattoo. So the moment I felt that rush, I immediately but carefully planned a trip there.

It's an Indigenous practice and I'm still very much reconnecting and learning (always will be) so I don't know if I'm equipped to answer this without exposing too much of the practice to people looking to appropriate or steal :,(! However, the mambabatok I received markings from has a site, interviews, and books that go through much of it! You can find the information here!

Apo Whang-od, ultracentenaria artista del tatuaggio filippina, è stata la prima donna a portare avanti la tradizione mistica del disegno sul corpo di Kalinga (gruppo etnico a cui appartiene per nascita).

Custode di rituali dal valore sacro, disegna a mano sulla pelle con una spina intinta nella fuliggine, nel remoto villaggio di Buscalan, a 12 ore di viaggio da Manila.

Il tatuaggio è un segno indelebile della sua identità culturale e lei, nell’ultimo secolo, ha impresso i simboli sacri degli antenati su donne, guerrieri e cacciatori di teste.

Nominata per il National Living Treasures Award nel 2017, la Commissione nazionale per la cultura e le arti le ha conferito il prestigioso premio Dangal ng Haraya nel 2018. Recentemente, a 106 anni, è stata immortalata sulla copertina di Vogue.

Nata a Tinglayan, nelle Filippine, il 17 febbraio 1917, ha cominciato a tatuare e essere tatuata quando aveva sedici anni. Sebbene fosse un’arte tradizionalmente riservata soltanto a uomini che discendono da famiglie di tatuatori, è stato proprio suo padre a iniziarla.

Per gli uomini, significava essere investiti dello status di guerrieri, un rituale di guerra che aveva implicazioni spirituali, mentre le donne si tatuavano per accrescere la fertilità e per motivi estetici. A quei tempi, le donne non tatuate erano considerate imperfette, indesiderabili. I loro corpi disegnati erano celebrati come distintivi di onore, ricchezza, bellezza e coraggio.

Apo Whang-od, non solo è stata la prima donna a imparare questo antico mestiere, ma lo ha, a sua volta, insegnato ad altre donne, rompendo la tradizione della storia di Kalinga.

Con l’arrivo del cattolicesimo che ha imposto altre regole, essere tatuate era divenuto motivo di vergogna e le generazioni successive non hanno portato avanti l’antica pratica.

Come mambabatok, tatuatrice tradizionale, eseguiva una serie di rituali mentre era all’opera, come praticare la divinazione intonando i canti tradizionali.

Scoperta da pochi anni, sono tante le persone da tutto il mondo, compresi personaggi famosi, che affrontano l’impervio viaggio per farsi tatuare da lei.

Per tutta la sua vita, come da tradizione, non ha mai chiesto soldi in cambio, al massimo le venivano elargiti prodotti della terra come ricompensa per un lavoro che durava anche tre giorni e ha continuato a fare la contadina.

Oggi fa tatuaggi semplici e non canta più, quella pratica era riservata alla sua gente e aveva un significato simbolico e mistico.

Usa la tecnica millenaria del batok, che è più dolorosa dei moderni tatuaggi e consiste un bastoncino di bambù con una spina di albero attaccata all’estremità in una miscela di carbone e acqua.

Il suo marchio distintivo è composto da tre punti, che rappresentano se stessa e le sue due apprendiste legate al lignaggio, le nipoti, perché i mambabatok possono tramandare il loro mestiere solo nell’ambito della loro discendenza e lei non ha avuto figli o figlie.

Apo Whang-od è oggi una rispettata anziana del villaggio, suona il flauto da naso e continua a coltivare riso e allevare animali.

La sua arte è stata conosciuta solo nel 2007, grazie all’antropologo statunitense Lars Krutak che ne ha documentato i suoi lavori.

L’episodio della serie Tattoo Hunter su Discovery Channel è stato l’inizio della riscoperta della cultura Kalinga e di Apo Whang-od per il pubblico globale.

Questa fama, seppur tardiva, le ha portato diversi riconoscimenti e partecipazioni a fiere e mostre internazionali.

La sua storia e il suo contributo all’identità e al patrimonio nazionale sono stati raccontati in diverse serie tv e documentari.
