do you have a particular naming scheme for characters in the setting, or do you just go whatever you think sounds good at the time?

it's a very soft rule: characters born in union tend to have tomino style names, characters born in kishar tend to have nasu style names, and characters in the divine solis tend to have names that are corruptions of romantic language names

the closer you are to the core of a faction's power, the more likely you are to have a name that reflects the motif of that faction. the further you are, the more normal your name gets

when you get into more regional names, you do begin to see some patterns in the variation, which some eagle-eyed readers might have noticed

Meilin Biltruf and Jianlin of El (the latter being the protagonist of Fingers on the Mirror) could probably both trace their families (provided they still had them) back to similar places

the spectating saints.

Saints are higher-existence beings spectating on the story - in this case, When the Crocodiles Weep - a Filipino reimagining of Umineko. From left to right, they are:

Bernardo Carpio, the Saint of Toil. An imprisoned giant chained between two mountains.

Asuang, the Saint of Damnation. The mother of monsters and all things hellish. Dwells deep under Mt. Malinao.

Sto. Monito, the Saint of Gifts. The saint form of Kulas Obispo, the story's hero. He must defeat Doña Jeronima and uncover her lies.

Flerida, the Saint of Truth. Her statements, just like her arrows, always hit their mark. Values accuracy above all.

I've got other Saint OCs, but these are the main ones. They're premade PCs for When the Crocodiles Weep, though you can always make your own.

Day 3 - April 29, Saturday

Asis and I were out and about on our rented scooter around 5 am. We made a pitstop at the Sto. Tomas de Villanueva Parish church. Afterward, we roamed around the area in search of an open cafe, but to no avail. Eventually, we decided to head to Shaka Cafe, as it was the only place we found that would open at the latest by 6:30 am. Arriving 40 minutes before the opening time, we sat and enjoyed the view of the waves and surfers from afar.

On Day 3, our plan was to island-hop. We hoped for good weather, but it turned gloomy with dark clouds and occasional rain. We still went ahead and rented a private boat for our group. Our first stop was Naked Island, a sandbar true to its name—completely bare. It was just sand and I couldn't fully appreciate it unless seen from above. Our middle stop was Daku Island, the largest of the three main islands, where we stayed for a while and enjoyed the infamous boodle fight. The last stop was Guyam Island, named aptly for its small size.

I don’t know, but this day felt exhausting, and the weather only added to the gloominess. We returned to our place around 3 pm, completely worn out. After freshening up, we were all knocked out. We only woke up to the sound of rain and decided to have our dinner delivered to our place. What a day!

Day 4 - April 30, Sunday

The group was out early and had our breakfast at Siargao Corner Cafe. The weather started clearing up. The sun was finally peeking! Unfortunately, it was also the last day of our friends on the island. They were bound to Manila later that afternoon. In the time remaining, we passed the Catangnan-Cabitoonan bridge and took tons of photos in this coconut road. We also visited a piercing shop, and most of them decided to have their ears pierced, while Asis opted for an eyebrow piercing. Our final stop with the group was CEV: Ceviche & Kinilaw Shack. I had no idea about this place, but one of our group members insisted it was a must-try spot in Siargao. They mentioned that whenever they attempted to eat there, it was either closed or jam-packed. And man, it was the first restaurant on the island that Asis and I both approved of. The dishes were delicious, with the ingredients complementing each other perfectly. Eating there was a perfect way to wrap up the entire group tour with our friends.

After parting ways, we returned to Mera's Garden Resort, our rented place, to collect our stuff. Riding on our scooter, we successfully transported all our gear—two backpacks, a tote bag, and a small suitcase—from General Luna to Malinao, our next Airbnb home for the next few days. Upon check-in, we dropped off our laundry nearby. In the late afternoon, we ventured back to General Luna town proper, aimlessly roaming with no particular destination in mind, enjoying the views, local vibes, and the cool night breeze. It was indeed a pleasant day.

Makikilala mo ang mala-anghel na katiwala ng banal na geyt ng SHS. Pagpasok mo ay siguradong maliligaw ka sa napakalaking paaralan. Pero, wag ka mag-aalala subalit maraming mahabaging binata na tinatawag na Bosconians ang maari mong malapitan. Kapag linapitan mo ang mga bosconians na ito, siguradong tutulungan ka nila, subalit mula noong kanilang pagpasok sa DBTI-Makati, sinanay na sa kanila ang “Reason, Religion and Loving Kindness.” Matapos mong mahanap ang tamang landas, makikita mo ang dalawang salamin na pinto ng Braga building. Pagpasok, una mong makikita ang isang malaking istatuwa ng patron ng paaralan, si San Juan Bosco na may kasamang mga bata. Pangalawang mapapansin mo ay ang tema ng gusali na puti,

kumpara sa gusali ng Junior High School at Elementary na makikita mo sa sumusunod na larawan:

Matatawag mong moderno ang disenyo ng Braga Building.

Pangatlo, ay mapapansin mo ang malawak na hagdan sa kaliwa’t kanan ng gusali na humahantong sa iyong patutunguhan, sa unang tingin ay nakakatamad itong akyatin pero, may pumukaw sa iyong mga mata, dalawang elevator sa likod ng istatuwa ni Don Bosco. Ang mahiwagang elevator na ito ay pribiheliyo ng SHS Bosconians at Faculty. Pagpindot mo sa pataas na pindutan, mapapansin mo na hindi gumagana ang isang elevator kaya kailangan mo hintayin ang nag-iisang elevator. Pagbukas nito, may lumabas na guro kaya’t magdadalawang isip ka kung pwede mo ba talaga ito gamitin, pero ginamit mo parin sa kabila ng pagdududa dahil tinatamad ka talagang akyatin ang mahabang hagdanan. Pagdating ng elevator sa ikatlong palapag, ika’y mababahala sa dami ng Bosconians sa student lounge. At dito na magsisimula ang iyong “unang araw” bilang isang bosconian.

personality: she’s a fucking old lady.

technically, not really, because forty isn’t old, and more than that she doesn’t want that to be her personality, she really doesn’t— but when your entire party is, at least, two whole decades younger than you, practically half your entire life time ( and double theirs, what an awful thought ) it’s kind of inevitable. she takes the position with grace, though… and a bit of an attitude, but she deserves that at the very least.

odile’s learned some things in her forty years; not a whole lot, that’s why she’s out here traveling in the first place, has the moniker of “the researcher” in their silly little party, so on and so forth. for all her crankiness she cares for them deeply, and she’s more than happy to impart whatever wisdom she has upon them; despite her craft type, she is firmly, proudly, undoubtedly their rock.

history / background: 

odile was a liar by omission.

or perhaps that’s not quite right. it’d be “by omission” if isabeau had said nothing, and she continued to say nothing— but the moment he’d questioned it, she’d had the choice to lie, or to come clean.

is it possible to lie without saying a single thing? that is how odile felt that afternoon, the way the kids start verbally wrestling with each other in their attempt to crack her open; to them, this was a weakness in the shell, an opening, and it’s easy to toss them the bone and watch them fight with each other like puppies, playful and with teeth but no fangs.

she’s fond of them, more than anything. born in ka bue but here in vaugarde to learn, she finds her greatest teachers are a bunch of twenty somethings and an actual, literal child. of course, she knew from the very beginning of her journey, that little of her studies would be found in libraries, or schools, or houses— but she finds herself easily and quickly in these first strangers, then friends, now family.

mirabelle and isabeau. then siffrin. then bonnie. the search for herself is never ending, but she’s certain, with them by her side, that it’s right there— nestled between their quiet, beating hearts. all of theirs.

powers / abilities: 

CRAFT SKILLS. in stars and time’s equivalent of magic. rock paper scissors, pretty literally: odile’s a paper type, so she’s weak to scissors, resistant against rock, you can figure it out. she’s also capable of using all three craft types. craft type determines the palm shape when attacking— or is it the other way around? who knows. whichever it is, odile attacks with an open palm.

The second batch of hundreds of books donated by The Friends of Greenburgh Library of New York arrived at the Balading Elementary School and Malinao Central Elementary School in the Province of Albay. The photos show the excitement of school children opening the shipping boxes and browsing the attractive books.

Teacher @Ronnie Alcoriza in his Facebook post expressed his gratitude and importance of books to building the knowledge of learners in school and at home.

ASUANG, SAINT OF DAMNATION

The mother of monsters and all things hellish. Dwelling in the depths of the earth under Mt. Malinao, from her cave come all manner of bats and beast. She loves to reward do-gooders almost as much as she loves to punish sinners.

This is a reimagining of Asuang, the god of evil in Bicolano myth. Although in the original myth Asuang is a man, I thought having a whole "mother of all monsters" theme would be more interesting! I was aiming for a ghoulish vibe for this drawing - though hopefully not too scary.

Asuang is the Saint of Damnation, the Swellbloom Kids equivalent of Umineko witches. She features in my module, When the Crocodiles Weep! Check it out here:
