She-Hulk: Attorney at Law
[3 stars]
The pilot episode of this series was one of the better launches of the MCU efforts they’ve done. It was funny and set up a slew of possibilities… which it promptly threw away during the second episode. I mean, really, she never even considered hanging up her own shingle before working for the dark side? Yes, I know, mixed metaphors, but what can you do?
And then the series itself meanders its way to a main plot. You can maybe, kinda see it forming up as things go along, but it isn’t particularly sharp writing. They got their mojo back in the penultimate, cross-over episode (which while ridiculous had some of their best moments). And then the finale…which I honestly don’t know whether to love or hate. There are some great things in there, but it turns the entire series into one, long joke. Worse, in some ways it turns She-Hulk into a bumbling, long joke rather than the hero and bright lawyer she is.
I will admit that Tatiana Maslany (Destroyer) clearly had a blast doing the show. She’s adept at the nuanced shifts between her Hulk and Jen presentations. And she has the charisma to hold the show. Maslany also has some nice help from character actor Ginger Gonzaga, Griffin Matthews (The Flight Attendant), and Tim Roth (Luce)…with a nod to Mark Ruffalo (The Adam Project) as well. And her onset Hulk reference, Malia Arrayah, deserves to be mentioned simply because she would otherwise be invisible since Maslany’s face replaces hers in the final cut. There are some additional surprises throughout the series, but let them be surprises. The other recurring characters serve their purposes, but didn’t really stand out for me. And the cast, as good as many of them are, couldn’t quite rise above the writing all the time.
And there are also ongoing tropes that they just can’t quite sell. Maslany breaks the 4th wall many times during the season. It’s amusing, though not as effective or brash as Deadpool. But none of the directors seem to know how to make it work effectively. There is no micro-beat  or selling of the shift in focus. It is all thrown away such that you aren’t even sure for a brief moment if she is talking to the audience or not…and when it stops. It really sucks the joy out of the attempt.
In addition to any writing and directing issues I may have, the CGI is, well, lacking. Maslany’s size is variable (a traditional problem with the tech) and she looks so damned plastic all the time. There is no texturing of her skin and it doesn’t quite move right all the time. All of these serve to pull you out of the moment…and the eps are already short. It just can’t afford those kinds of stumbles.
Overall, it is a nice attempt at trying to do something new, but it doesn’t really succeed fully. It has moments and possibilities, almost all of which are squandered or telegraphed. If approached as empty calories, the show passes muster. I didn’t need a huge MCU style story, but I didn’t need sharper and more consistent delivery in writing and directing.

With 55.9% Malia Arrayah has just been accepted by most fans for the role of Kikunojo. She would have to work hard to convince the rest, though.
