GISB in S'pore Part III.
Woman shares her experience of working at two GISBH cafes in Kampong Gelam, not being paid a salary.
For a year and a half since 2010, Ummu Shofiyah Muhammad Amin, now 27 years old, has been one of the residents of the 'guest house' operated by Global Ikhwan Services and Business Holdings (GISBH) located at Jalan Pari Dedap. She and three other younger sisters were sent to GISBH hostels. Shofiyah also worked at two GISBH cafes in Kampong Gelam and according to her, was not paid a salary.
In her sharing, Shofiyah recalled her memories when she was first sent to the GISBH hostel in 2010. "At that time, I was about 13 years old, just finished the PSLE exam. In December, I had to take one test (by GISBH). In January, I walked into a hostel in one of the Bandar Country Homes in Rawang, Selangor, Malaysia."
"I asked my mother why I had to go there because my PSLE results were also quite good but my mother said that the hostel would also teach me the content that I would study in Singapore. I went there with a heavy heart because I felt I would waste my time," said Shofiyah. According to Shofiyah, she stayed in the hostel for about a month only. "In the dormitory, everyone is Singaporean. We lived in a small room with eight other students. The hostel is in a terrace house but we only got one room,"
Shofiyah claimed that she never studied or received an education there. "I just have to cook, if they tell us to cook. We also tidy up the house. We don't learn," said Shofiyah.
She then complained to her mother when she returned to Singapore. Shofiyah explained that since the Singaporean students also do not have visas, they need to return to Singapore once a month. "When I returned to Singapore, I told my mother that I was not going to the school she had promised. I feel like I've been cheated. I told my mother that I didn't study, didn't do anything. So why do I need to live in the dormitory again," explained Shofiyah. Due to her complaint, Shofiyah was transferred and sent to the promised dormitory. She stayed in the dormitory for another five months.
"When I was in the hostel, I didn't feel anything strange because we studied according to the materials of madrasah schools in Malaysia. The books used are not entirely books about Abuya. There are also books from outside. They also teach basics such as tauhid, fardu ain, tajwid," he added. But a few months later, they stopped studying altogether. "At that time, Abuya had passed away. After that, his son, who is also the principal of the dormitory, also died, and strange things began to happen. We don't learn anymore," Shofiyah claimed.
Not long after, Shofiyah was brought back by her mother to Singapore and delivered to a GISBH-controlled 'charity house' at Jalan Pari Dedap. As Shofiyah recalls, she lived in a 'charity house' at the mentioned location for about a year and a half from 2010.
There, she once again admitted that she had never studied. "If my mother hadn't come to the house, we wouldn't have learned. We just hang out with other friends," said Shofiyah. According to her, there were less than 20 adolescent girls between the ages of 13 and 20 living with her at the time. Shofuyah said: "There, we will be divided into several groups. So every week we have an assignment. This week, we need to do one task. Another week, we need to do other house chores as well. It's our daily routine." "The good thing is that we still pray in congregation. Half an hour before prayer, we are ready to sit in the saf, pray," she added.
According to Shofiyah, some of the things taught were quite suspicious after Abuya died. Abuya is the nickname for the founder of Al-Arqam, Ashaari Muhammad.
"They teach about 'Islamic Holy Sex' where women need to dress sexy for their husbands. At that time, I was young, too young to understand the subject." "Umm Jah (Abuya's second wife) also said that she could have sex with Abuya in the spirit realm. To me, it was a bit suspicious. How can a living person enter the spirit realm? I know that she is the wife of Abuya so what she said, we should believe that it came from Abuya," Shofiyah said.
Another thing that caused her doubts at that time was the practice of 'Tabung Takwa'. "Every month we have to contribute to this fund. They say that our level of piety depends on how much we contribute. I was only 13 years old at the time. I also don't receive much pocket money." "So sometimes I only have S$3. I have to give the money but every day I will pray tahajjud, pray on time, pray but my taqwa is only worth S$3? It made me think because they also said that people who are not worshippers will not enter heaven. What about my relatives who I know their worship is more than mine. Does that mean they will not go to heaven because they do not contribute to the piety?" explained Shofiyah.
Shofiyah also shared her experience working in two cafes operated by GISBH. His first experience was around 2013. "The first is a shop selling Malay side dishes next to Kampong Glam Cafe. I come every morning to help. I 'worked' there with my sister. So I will take turns to work. For example, on Monday I work, on Tuesday she also works. We need to be in that shop from 10 am to 10 pm. Every week, we will work about three or four days," said Shofiyah. During that period, Shofiyah claimed that she was never paid a salary.
In 2015, Shofiyah also worked at another café run by GISBH in the Kampong Gelam area. The name of the shop, according to Shofiyah's mother, Ms. Yuwana Muhammad Ehwan, is Mat'ma Ikhwan. According to some reports, the company was founded in 2012.
In 2016, Shofiyah decided to leave GISBH. At that time, she began attending Quran classes with her mother. However, she was deemed to be not committed to GISBH. "They said I didn't spend time in cafes. I was told to always go out. They always ask, why do you need to study outside? Why not focus on the congregation (GISBH)?"
Since then, Shofiyah has taken several courses and classes to improve her skills. "I started going to tuition with my grandfather. I have also taken the Workplace Literacy and Numeracy (WPLN) course. I also enrolled for the pre-diploma in Andalus, while taking the 'N' level exams," she explained. Prior to 2019, Shofiyah successfully passed the 'O' level examination while studying for a Diploma in Shariah at the Muhammadiyah Islamic College. She also served as an early education teacher for five years.

Intertextile Shenzhen returns in June 2025, offering gateway to South China’s fashion landscape
Following the success of the 2024 edition, which welcomed nearly 20,000 visitors from 45 countries and regions, Intertextile Shenzhen will return from 11 – 13 June 2025 at the Shenzhen Convention & Exhibition Center (Futian). Including several distinct product categories, and with the establishment of two new zones – Fashion Gallery and The Closet – the fair will offer abundant opportunities for industry players from across the value chain to elevate their brands within South China’s ever-evolving fashion landscape.
Ms Wilmet Shea, General Manager of Messe Frankfurt (HK) Ltd, commented: “South China’s robust consumption and the rise of local brands present unique opportunities for global suppliers, and Intertextile Shenzhen is the ideal platform to make a regional impact. The show consistently attracts a varied array of visitors with sourcing intent, to discover new suppliers, gain insights into trends, and explore partnerships that drive future growth. Buyers know they can find leading international apparel fabrics and accessories players at this platform, and its location in Shenzhen’s CBD increases its accessibility and appeal.”
Shenzhen is strategically situated at the crossroads of textile design, production, and sourcing. Home to over 2,500 fashion brands, including leading ladieswear companies Eeka, Ellassay, Marisfrolg, Yinger, and more, the city is energized by emerging designers and renowned events such as Shenzhen Fashion Week. Well-connected through various ports and stations, and with key products including ladieswear, casual wear, and functional sportswear, Intertextile Shenzhen 2025 is positioned as an ideal sourcing platform for trend-focused buyers from across China, ASEAN, and beyond.
Exhibiting at the 2024 show, Mr Jay Hwang, General Manager of SK Tex Co Ltd stated: “This edition of Intertextile Shenzhen is better, as the location is different, and the number and quality of visitors have increased. At this fair, most of the visitors are manufacturers based in Shenzhen. Our main fabric here is voile, used for party dresses for example, and so many buyers have requested this item. Being part of the Korea Pavilion is better than in an individual booth. Buyers can see the Korea Pavilion, identify where we’re from and it helps generate more interest.”
Beyond business exchange: new zones at Intertextile Shenzhen 2025
To capture opportunities of South China’s fashion scene, the organizers have announced the debut of two zones – Fashion Gallery and The Closet.
Featuring a diverse range of offerings – from ladieswear and casual attire to functional sportswear and lingerie – Fashion Gallery aims to showcase the innovative spirit of the fashion industry.
Complementing Fashion Gallery, The Closet will be a unique space for fashion designers and garment manufacturers, fostering collaboration and networking while showcasing cutting-edge creations. This hub aims to nurture creativity and innovation within the fashion industry by providing emerging designers with the resources, support, and visibility they need to thrive.
Set to further enhance the show’s dynamic business environment, the Chinese government has recently extended its visa-free policy to include over 28 countries, including Andorra, Austria, Australia, Belgium, Cyprus, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Korea, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Monaco, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, and Switzerland.
Intertextile Shenzhen serves as an exceptional platform for promoting the emergence of new trends, industries, innovative models, and dynamic driving forces. By showcasing a collection of pioneering case studies and comprehensive solutions for industry enhancement, the show facilitates the replication of successful new models and technologies through engaging displays, seminars, and themed forums.

The government, in its efforts to balance various factors, will also limit the intake for the number of student visas available for international students, a move that will be felt by many aspiring students.
Australia's latest policy reform will set a 270,000 visa cap for international students in 2025, with specific limits imposed on each institution.
This new limit, formally referred as the National Planning Level (NPL) for foreign student enrolments, will be allocated across the higher education and vocational educational sectors.
Australia Limits International Student Numbers
Government data indicates that the new cap will allow approximately 145,000 international students to enrol in public universities and about 95,000 in vocational institutions. This represents a reduction of roughly 7,000 students compared to pre-pandemic figures and 53,000 fewer than the previous year.
Caps are set according to 2019 enrollment data, with adjustments for institutions that expanded between 2019 and 2023. Universities with larger international student populations will experience stricter growth controls.
Categories Excluded from the Student Cap
The government has clarified that specific sectors are not covered by the NPL, including:
1. Schools
2. Higher degree research programs
3. Standalone English-language providers (ELICOS)
4. Non-award programs
The Department of Home Affairs presented information showing that the number of student visas granted in the most recent financial year plunged by 60,000 compared to 2023.
Chair of Universities Australia, highlighted that visa grants for higher education have decreased by 23% compared to the previous year. This decrease has resulted in a $4.3 billion economic loss and created job losses for 14,000 jobs within the sector.
The government has commendably raised visa processing fees from $710 to $1,600, the most significant increase in five years. This recent change in the migration fee for student visa of Australia has already cut short offshore interest in vocational education, and upcoming updates later this year can dampen permanent migration opportunities for international students.
Specifically, 40% of prospective students from the Philippines and Malaysia have suggested they might rule out Australia as a study destination due to the increased visa fees.
