Ulu Muda

It was a privilege and a treat to be able to visit Ulu Muda, a forest reserve in the northwest part of Malaysia bordering Thailand.

The man-made lakes provides water to the rice producing Kedah. To get to the Earth Lodge, the only place to stay, takes about 2-3 hours car ride from Butterworth to the Muda Lake jetty, then another 45 minutes to 1 hour boat ride to the remote lodge.

At the jetty, we were met with the founding director, Hymeir who would be our hosts for the next 2 days.

The program included morning and evening river cruises to hopefully spot some animals, including some Asian Elephants crossing the river!

Besides many seeing different species of birds including hornbills, there were lots of monkeys, short and long tail macaques.

A 3 hour hike through the rainforest took us to a limestone cave. It was a welcome site to feel the cool air of the cave, a break from the hot and humid temperatures.

Returning back to the lodge, we were treated with a much needed iced orange juice, after visiting the natural spring salt licks used by the animals such as the elephants. Though we were wearing leech socks, some of us did get bitten by leeches but there were not too many of them since it has been pretty dry.

Though the accommodation is basic (no air conditioning, no power after 10pm), it was quite an experience to be remote and be off the grid (no internet). The meals were definitely delicious!
