When we are in chaos and anxiety, the urge to do something becomes stronger. So to speak, the boredom of being locked inside early this year prompted this new photo book project, Still Life. In 2020, no matter where we are, we all experienced a similar but not the same predicament. When photographers are constrained by reality, or caught in a battle with boredom and anxiety, we couldn’t help it wonder, without the trigger points of taking photographs, where would their lens go? Will ‘photography’ still happen?
We invited photographers we’ve been closely watching. In this project, an intervention has been imposed onto their freely selected topics, each photographer needs to create their stories indoors using limited equipment. As a result, the photographic collective Still Life includes 13 works from different photographers around the world.
The title Still Life comes from the principal genre of Western art, which was endowed with a beautiful meaning — life is still. Here in this book, ‘Still Life’ is considered as a metaphor for the state of continuing living in this predicament — in the context of the pandemic, a relatively still state we are all in.

BLCD Review: I’m Not a Robot but BL
Title: Android no Boku ga Super Darling ni Koishite mo Ii desu ka? (アンドロイドの僕がスパダリに恋してもいいですか?)
Release Date: 2021/05/28
Author: Brilliant Prin
Illustrator: Ise
Cast:
Shingaki Tarusuke x Amasaki Kouhei
Oono Tomohiro
Furukawa Makoto
Synopsis: Saikawa Tomohiro is in dire straits after getting fired from the cafe he was working at. Kariya, a regular, asks him if he was up to part-timing as an “android” for an entrepreneur, Hasumi Eito. Although sketchy, Tomohiro had no choice but to accept—the deal wasn’t exactly bad anyway, since the conditions were good, and he was going to be paid handsomely. However, as he naturally becomes drawn to Eito’s charm and kindness. They even begin to share a physical relationship, but Eito might not accept Tomo as a human. After all, Tomo’s just a stand-in for Eito’s deceased lover.
Review Proper
I wrote that goddamn synopsis myself and even said, “What is with Brilliant Prin and depressing original content?” I’m spoiling ‘cause it’s an original with no novels or manga. So, basically everything in the synopsis is true. It kinda felt similar to Sweet Delivery Boy in the beginning, especially since Tomohiro’s more or less a sex-worker because he also got paid to have sex with Hasumi-san. With that thought in mind, I went into this thinking that it’ll go the same route, and it did to an extent, until the point when Tomohiro got guilty over the pretending and him catching feelings for Hasumi-san, that is.
I was screaming so loud at Tomohiro not to fall for that man CAUSE HE’S JUST AN OBJECT TO HIM DUHHH??? Kariya, Hasumi-san’s scientist friend and Tomohiro’s employer, was even supportive of his feelings for some reason, and even though I loved Kariya ‘cause he was so nice to this bb, I was just so confused as to why he was deceiving his friend like that??? And like, how much of an idiot was Hasumi-san that he just accepted every little human quirk Tomohiro showed??? Brah, there was this one time when Tomohiro let it slip that he worked at a cafe before to make ends meet, and Hasumi-san was just: “Oh, that’s cute. Kariya must’ve programmed that in you”???
Anyway, Tomohiro resolves to tell Hasumi-san the truth someday soon and leave for good ‘cause he loved him that much. IDIOT 😭😭😭 Before he could confess, however, Hasumi-san gets invited to a company party, and he decides that he’ll be introducing Tomohiro to everyone as his lover. A little nervous yet excited, Tomohiro agrees to go, and during the party, he finally meets Hasumi-san’s humpty-grumpy co-worker, Yuugi, that’s voiced by Makonyan. He showed no attempt to hide his diskust AT ALL. He was such an asshole, he straight up rubbed it in his face that he’s just a stand-in for Hasumi-san’s departed beau AND THAT HE’LL NEVER ACCEPT HIM CAUSE HE AIN’T HUMAN. AND THEN TOMOHIRO finds out that Hasumi-san's deceased lover was named Tomoya. THERE TOMOHIRO AND I WERE, THINKING THAT THEY JUST GAVE HIM THE NAME TOMO FOR A SHORT TOMOHIRO, BUT IT WAS TOMO FOR TOMOYA'S REPLACEMENT THE WHOLE TIME????
I WAS READY TO GO WAR. I WAS READY TO FUCK BOTH MAKONYAN AND HASUMI-SAN UP. MY BOY HAD NOTHING!!!
Tomohiro becomes depressy after finally realizing that he’s really just an object to Hasumi-san and takes a break from the party. Kariya goes to comfort my boy ‘cause he had a feeling that Yuugi would say what he did, but Tomohiro lies, saying that Yuugi didn't and he was okay, albeit a little anxious. Kariya gently calls him out on his bs, telling him that what he felt wasn’t anxiety but irritation. Realizing that this emotion is very much un-android-like, Tomohiro goes into a panic, but Kariya quickly de-escalates. “Tomo, you are an android. You have no control over your feelings, and Hasumi believes that you’re an android, anyway. You don’t have to think so hard about it and just say what you want to say—just like an android. Does he look like the type of man who’ll let you go just because of this?”
Like magic, Hasumi-san comes back to the suite and proposes to take him back to the party after confirming that Tomohiro was fine, saying that he ain’t gonna stop until everyone in the building accepts their relationship. OBVIOUSLY, THIS SENDS MY BOY TOMOHIRO INTO PANIC ATTACK NUMBER TWO!!! “Bro, I’m an android! I don’t need that shit! Just treat me like some toy or pet!” I was like, "Yeah! Throw him those bars!" Ngl, I really hoped that we was wrong about the Tomo=Tomoya thing, but when Tomohiro called him out for it, Hasumi-san choked AND I SWEAR I WOULD HAVE CHOKED HIM MYSELF AAAAAA
BUT THEN TOMOHIRO
TOMOHIRO MY BOY SAYS:
“Then I’ll tell you a lie too. I’m an android. I’m not human.”
As I was on a 0.01 second high, I didn't realize that he climbed the ledge of the balcony??? And he says that since he was an android, it wouldn’t matter if he breaks ‘cause they could just fix him??? And I was like, boy??? YOU’RE HUMAN OMG, GET THE FUCK DOWN??? THEY TRIED CONVINCING TOMOHIRO TO COME DOWN, BUT AS HASUMI-SAN’S MONOLOGUE ABOUT HOW GREAT IT’D BE IF HE REALLY WERE HUMAN WAS TOO LONG, TOMOHIRO FUCKING SHORT-CIRCUITS AND FALLS OFF THE BALCONY???!!!
HE
REALLY
WAS
AN
ANDROID???!!!
So, apparently, after Tomoya died of illness three years ago, Kariya made Tomohiro as a stand-in for him. Since Tomohiro was programmed to think that he was human and could absorb all the info (includes feelings) around him to become human-like, Kariya explicitly warned Hasumi-san not to let Tomohiro experience such emotions as inferiority and irritation 'cause he wouldn’t be able to process them, and they may cause him to malfunction. Now broken and his chances of repair slim, Hasumi-san begs and even threatens Kariya to fix him. Although he couldn't bear seeing his friend suffer over losing his deceased lover, which prompted him to make Tomohiro, I loved how Kariya also high-key treated Tomo like family and even stood up to Hasumi-san. "Tomo believed he was human because I programmed him that way. And humans don't get a "next time". I'd let him die a human if I were you. That'd be the ultimate act of love." Kariya does agree to fix him on the condition that Hasumi-san allows Tomohiro recognizes himself as an android, however, and Tomohiro wakes up half a year later as an android. The end.
We also get a bonus track of how Hasumi-san met Tomoya that nobody asked for. Damn, I didn't know what I expected Tomoya to be like, but I didn’t think he would be that hoe. So, Tomoya really did work at a cafe, which is probably why that cafe thing was programmed into Tomohiro's memory, and Hasumi-san comes to that cafe often to flirt with him. Anyway, after Tomoya and Hasumi-san get caught in the rain and Tomoya suggests Hasumi-san to dry off at his place, Hasumi-san confesses then things get jiggy. Hasumi-san is obvs very happy, but he was afraid he wouldn't be able to get his hands off him if Tomoya allows him to get serious.
Tomoya: "Be serious, then. And I don't hate this either."
Shingaki: "That's all?"
Tomoya: "Well, if you turn out to be good in bed, then maybe I can fall in love with you."
Hasumi-san: "You're definitely falling in love tonight."
Y'all think this is funny, Brilliant Prin??? I came here for I'm Not A Robot But Sweet Delivery Boy, BUT THE AUDACITY OF Y’ALL TO GIVE ME SHORTCAKE NO ICHIGO NI WA SAWARANAIDE, HONEY, AND NIGHTS BEFORE NIGHT WITH SPICY DIALOGUE???
All that spice and he just dies in the end, turning Hasumi-san into a lonely, delusional man. I still hate him tho.
I haven't even discussed the technicalities yet, but this review is already a novel long. Anyway, just know that the voice acting was excellent (save for the way Shingaki screamed when Tomohiro fell). Amasaki Kouhei voiced Tomohiro and Tomoya so differently from each other. I was just shocked. What a man. It also was a little reminiscent of Shimono Hiro's performance in Honey. 👀
This drained me emotionally what the fuck? But I highly recommend this to all you sadomasochistic hos. I haven't listened to the first Brilliant Prin original which also had loss, but I will say that this is the most dramatic so far (Pheromone Tantei might be more similar to Cendrillon). This also doesn't have that high of a Japanese requirement, so it'd be good for those who have intermediate Japanese. As for similar dramatic CDs with plot twists, again, I'd like to recommend Shortcake no Ichigo ni wa Sawaranaide and Yesterday wo Kazoete (suffer lmao). Funny how I listened to this right around the time I came out with Miike Romuco's Ginga. *plays The Beatles' Code theme
