A video-essay and analysis on my deep-rooted hatred on the idea of fate. I think the game Kingdoms of Amalur, and the character within it, the Maid of Windemere, gets across my distaste for it perfectly and the Fae society within the setting, where fate is an actual tangible real measurable thing as natural as the wind... until it isn't.

I was already firmly on the Marcia is Maeve train but upon this reread I suspect the Windemere's maid Marianne also was. There's no reason for a maid to know the details of the Luideag's binding like that. Plus the 'remember I love you as much as I love my children' reads differently given the Tuatha aren't claimed by Maeve.

Playing Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning since it’s free on PS+ this month and a friend recommended it. Just finished the House of Ballads storyline. Sided with Magwyr, the Maid of Windemere, in the end. The Telling was a cruelty to the "villains", since they weren't allowed to leave the "role" at a whim and leave it to a replacement like the Court of Enchantments could. Also, since "change" was coming to the fae either way, ruling with her should let the Fateless One steer her into being a better ruler, especially since her cyclical torment makes her more open to change than most fae.

re: my last post about koar: Yes. Yes, it's because of the maid of windemere, both the somewhat not faked hot-lady-please-step-on-me attitude, and the willingness to side with "evil" in koar. i'm pretty sure the house of ballads was the first faction quest i did in my first playthrough and there's something very compelling about helping the maid (and everyone else) to escape the cycle, especially as she claims the fae are "in their autumn". i'm having quite a number of thoughts about everyone in the house fading into the sunset, freed only in their last few days, too late to do anything substantial but early enough to have a flash of happiness. none touch me im veryvery soft & fragile

I just fought the Maid of Windemere at Level 16 while affected by the Blood Plague.
It was impossible so I turned the difficulty down xD

like I’m aware that this is probably a function of laziness/lack of budget/what have you, and that the studio either didn’t want to waste time recording a bunch of separate lines or they didn’t have the funds to do so, but like.... everyone in the House of Ballads seems really bi.
like.
reeeeeally bi.

well House of Ballads quests line started boringly and was so repetitive and got me soo confused about fae and their whole ‘technicaly immortal but stupidly easy to kill’ thing and like shouldn't they just kick fateless one ass for gathering too many fae personas??
omg fae are basically kin with historical/ballad heroes, aren’t they?? am dying
anyway this whole party got way better once maid of windemere appeared and called my fateless one ‘beloved’, it hit right in my wlw feels, so of course in the end namiundku became queen of fae
i don’t care that they hate new queens and i had to personally kill all fae from the last court, or that it’s not really romantic option in the game, or that now we have no freaking idea what will happend with fate since apparently it’s actuall factor in this world and people aren’t obssesed with it just because, or that my new wife was in conspiracy with bad guys im trying to stop from taking over the world...
i just don't care, i got pretty ending of a weird line of quests and i’m content enough

I sided with the Maid of Windemere this time. I think the summer court will not be happy with me.

A bunch of more characters for my fateless household, who moved into a bigger home now
in order: Magwyr, the Maid of Windemere, Taibreah, Sunhilda Lorelle, Rience, a friend’s OC ( @sanitary-inspector ‘s, specifically.), Alyn Shir, and Rast Brattigan.

I imagine it’d be quite distrubing to see the Maid of Windemere and Lunae return to the House of Ballads.
The villain you feared, and the hero you trusted, walking right into your home, bearing a distinct smell of iron, blades caked in each other’s blood, but holding hands, declaring themselves your new Queens. You realize that the mortal hero you placed all your hopes on hasn’t even succumbed to the Maid, no, you can tell she’s perfectly conscious and aware, instead, she beat your feared nemesis, spared her, and decided to join her.
And you can’t do anything about it, you can’t even leave, because your fate binds you to the House.
