((old and new progress shot
literally just tracing the old screenshot (with some adjustments) but this time I'm sticking to outlined bc lineless is just rly hard (I'm stuck in no real art style limbo) and this is too uhhhh what's the word. ambitious! yeah. way too ambitious. it was supposed to be a lineless experiment where I was ALSO trying to work out how to shade/colour with overlay or smth. but it was.... not going how I hoped.
I did kinda like how it was looking the last time I worked on it. I got quite a bit further than the screenshot I took. I did some experimental shading, had the other wing mostly coloured in and the tail blended. I think I even had some of the face defined somehow,,, I ALSO redid the feet like 5 times over bc I didn't like the way they were looking. but I lost the progress and only have the screenshot with the sketch layer turned on. so. trying to turn it into a positive, at least I can fix anything that was bugging me but I got too far to change c:
(there's also another screenshot, that I forgot to turn back on for the progress shot, of an even earlier face sketch that I liked better but it wasn't flipped and fixed so that's why it's a little wonky and needs fixing)
#ooc post.#.vat file#vatta doodles.#mun draws.#readmore.#there are some lines I need to erase obv but I needed to take a break so I decided I'd post a lil thing#it's face is so fluffy I love it#the ref is a Magpie Sphinx from Flight Rising#but I wanted to make it kinda blue instead of reddish idk lol#Communism's headbutting my hand bc he's hungry now ok dinner time for everyone!

Moth of the Week
Hornet Moth
Sesia apiformis
The hornet moth is a part of the family Sesiidae or the family of clearwing moths. They get their common name predictably from how they mimic the appearance of the hornet. This type of mimicry is called Batesian mimicry, which is when a harmless species mimics the appearance of a unpalatable or defended species to protect themselves from predators. It was first described in 1759 by Carl Alexander Clerck under the name Sphinx apiformis.
Description This moth uses what called Batesian mimicry to resemble the hornet so predators do not want to eat it for fear of being stung. The adult moths have clear wings with yellow and striped black bodies. The number of stripes varies, females have two stripes while males have three. They are about the size of a hornet with the same jerky flight pattern when disturbed. The only difference is the hornet moth has more yellow and lacks the waist between the abdomen and the thorax.
Wingspan Range: 34 - 50 mm (≈1.34 - 1.97 in)
Females are larger than males
Diet and Habitat The larvae eat several species of poplar trees such as apsen (Populus tremula), black poplar (Populus nigra), and goat willow (Salix caprea). They prefer trees surrounded by heavy vegetation as those kinds show more evidence of infestation from larvae burrowing into trees. Adults do not eat.
This moth ranges over mainland Europe, Great Britain, and parts of the Middle East. It had also been introduced to America and Canada. They prefer open habitats such as parks, hedgerows, golf courses, quarries, fens, pond edges, and pits.
Mating The female moths attract males using special posterior glands to emit pheromones, usually soon after emergence. The male doesn’t seem to have any courtship behaviors as the two sexes are likely to begin mating as soon as they come into contact. Both males and females mate multiple times with different partners before the female beings laying her eggs.
Females prefer to lay eggs on old or isolated trees surrounded by vegetation. Females can lay from hundreds to thousands of eggs and exhibits no parental care. When comparing the number of eggs laid to the number of adults emerging per year, it is clear the large number of eggs laid is to make up for the large mortality rate between the egg and adult stages.
Predators This species of moth is primarily preyed on by magpies and great tits. Interestingly, these birds do not eat hornets despite eating this moth. An explanation for this is since these birds don’t eat hornets, the mimicry is less effective as they have any bad experiences with insects of this coloration. In fact, it can be suggested that the black and yellow coloration has the opposite effect: once the birds realize this moth is harmless and can be easily seen, they begin to actively seek them out.
Fun Fact The hornet moth is seen as a pest in the eastern United Kingdom due to a large dieback of poplar trees from larvae burrowing into them. However this dieback is not inherently caused by the larvae but instead from drought and human influences, which the larvae increase the effect of.

Two for joy: Chapter 38
The earth titan teleporting in Vecna’s place leaves room for a long descent as Vox Machina slowly drift back down to earth. Clearly the horrors in its bowels were not included in the spell, resulting in quite a splatter of rotting flesh and bone. Zahra and Kashaw wave them down in a less gorey patch, the latter pumping healing into them both.
Ravens descend as fog onto the corpses, merrily getting to their goddess’ work. Mortal in every way, squabbling and poking for anything edible. There’s a flash of white among them - one magpie, or perhaps two.
Vex’s legs shake when she touches down, gratefully putting Percy on his feet. His arm remains around her waist, tight even against what might be a broken rib. She leans into the living ache.
It takes a moment for her numb fingers to summon Galdric from the necklace. Fate-gold glow and lupine eyes match perfectly as they open. “Sorry you didn’t get to kill a god, buddy.”
“Rrrrf,” he huffs, ears twitching at that last bit. Right - still not on a buddy basis, yet. There’s something a bit resigned to him as he limps closer, arranging himself at Vex’s side.
“You got that big nasty vampire, though,” Vex points out, drawing her knuckles under his chin. That gets a reluctant wag of his tail.
Velora, busy pestering Kashaw ‘the human’ (oh, that’s going to be an ordeal, isn’t it?), gasps. “A puppy?!”
Galdric does not make a move to evade the child bounding over, her exhaustion forgotten. He does give Vex the most pathetic look, begging for her to call off Velora. No such luck.
“The Slayer's Take is in desperate need,” Zahra is saying. “We should check on the sphinx.”
Vex abandons the wolf to her sister’s fussing and cooing. “We can't thank you enough - again,” she says. “I'm so glad you're alright.”
Kashaw has his arm slung over Vax’s shoulder and is muttering something to him, pausing just long enough to go “I’m totally kidding, that’s never going to happen” and spurring them and a nearby Keyleth into laughter. Ravens scatter at the sound.
Zahra rolls her eyes, fond, and leans towards Vex conspiratorially. “We’ll get a Sending stone,” she promises. “If you need me- well, I won't come, because I'll be away, but -”
“Yeah - yeah.” Vex waves her free hand around (Percy still hasn’t let go, though he seems content to just listen). “You'll be a little busy with the - child and all.”
Somehow that feels more ludicrous than the fact they just defeated a god. Her friends are having a baby.
“A little busy, yes. But come and visit if you get a chance. Who knows?” Zahra grins sharp. “Twins run in my family, so you never know.”
“Really?” Correction: her friends might be having two babies.
Vex slides her hand free of Percy’s hold to envelop Zahra in a hug. It’s something weak and shaky, and she’s half sure their blood smears together across their arms. Wings curl around them, brushing the tips of Zahra’s horns, and pressure around Vex’s wrist reveals itself to be Zahra’s tail, looping lightly around it.
“I love you, darling.”
“I love you so much. Congratulations.”
As Zahra drifts away to offer goodbyes to Scanlan and Grog in turn, Vex finds Percy’s fingers drift from her shoulder, down her arm, back into her grasp. Still hanging on.
“You’re being very literal,” she notes, soft.
He shrugs. “Figured there’s no harm to it.”
Vex squeezes back. Enjoys the muted quiet of the space, the hum of her friends and little sister talking over eachother. No, enjoy is a lie - she’s too tired for real joy, she’s writing a memoir with this hum. Her whole life could be distilled to Vax and Grog bickering, Velora asking something of Keyleth, Percy’s thoughtful presence, and Zahra’s -
“Percy.” Both of them jump to see Zahra sashaying her way back to them. She leans heavily into the gunslinger’s side, effectively sandwiching him.
Without pupils, it’s quite hard to tell - but Vex is sure she glances up at him from where she’s tucked her head against his shoulder, horn pushing into his jaw. “Take care of our girl.”
Percy softens. A debate breaks out among the carrion birds, almost drowning his words: “I’ll try -”
“Take care of her,” says Zahra, with no room for debate.
(Vex’s heart, too slow, wonders how long he will have to.)
