#Magoranza mention

can you enlighten me on why people pair up marx and gryll so much? is there actually a reason for it or is it just a random fandom thing that stuck

So, side-stepping the issue of shipping for a moment, there's a lot of good reason to put Marx and Gryll together as characters...

They're both "magicians" (I've mentioned this before but Magolor and Taranza are explicitly "wizards" 魔術師 where as Marx and Gryll are "magicians" 魔法使い. It's hard to define the difference, as there's no set one definition, but most people consider the methodology of magic to be key in what separates a wizard from a magician.

What we can assume based on character animations is that wizards are more structured. Their spells seem more crafted. You can see Magolor and Taranza concentrating/focusing to perform spells. It's an effort for them. Whereas magicians seem to perform magic in a more natural fashion, almost without thought. Marx's attacks all happen as a matter of fact. He just does them. We've seen very little of Gryll, but flying through space without a care in the world looks like second nature to them. Interesting when even Kirby was starting to lose consciousness when left in the void of deep space!!)

Marx and Gryll are also both members of the funny hat club! They arrived on the Kirby series scene within about two years of each other; they both enjoy a dramatic entrance; Gryll is, at this point, either canonically non-binary or canonically without a gender (but given the fact that modern Kirby is finally okay with declaring characters non-binary, I think we can safely say Gryll would use they/them pronouns if their game was to ever get an official release and, just by looking at people's gijinka, Marx is maybe also not the most gender-conforming character ever. XD)

The biggest evidence in favor of them knowing each other is that they open up with the exact same "Hey, hey, hey!" in their respective games. That's distinctive enough that you almost KNOW they must know each other.

As for shipping them... Well... it's valid? Like most of Marx's implied relationships, canon gives us NOTHING so there is no real reason not to ship them...? Similar to how a lot of Marx and Magolor ships happen post-Milky Way Wishes, I see a lot of Marx and Gryll ships/shipping content happening pre-Milky Way Wishes. Marx and Gryll learning magic together, or knowing each other since they were younger and watching as the other changes (in this case, Marx getting more and more obsessed with his wish) as they grow up.

Dynamics-wise, there's something tempting about shipping Marx with someone who possibly knew him at his most fragile and innocent - when he was still "good" - and is still capable of seeing him that way. (And I did see one short MaruGuri piece that got me good - where Marx was in the process of growing his wings out/transforming between his two "states" and was having a rough time of it but Gryll was there to comfort him through the process.) Gryll is also someone that Marx, from his POV, doesn't have any reasons to be antagonistic with.

Despite that, I don't really ship them because 1) I just ended up liking them as having a familial/found-family relationship more - Marx doesn't have any close (...on-screen...) bonds with anyone outside of Kirby and so giving them Gryll (in a non-romantic way) helps flesh out Marx's character and give him someone to confide in and someone who can give him a good talking to when he gets out of hand and 2) they kind of neutralize each other?

It's the same reason I don't ship Magoranza, even though I think it's a fine pairing! They've got similar-ish (?) backstories and hobbies and interests, and I'm sure they'd make great, even close friends, but they don't have anything that, to me, gives them that strong spark.

Between he and Gryll, Marx is, obviously, the more troubled one. Also the more bombastic one. (Although Gryll has plenty of pep. Also just lots of big sibling energy. ...What ARE Salt, Sugar, and Pepper, by the way? Gryll's kid siblings? Gryll's familiars? ...Gryll's KIDS?!)

It just feels like, though they have a lot in common (loving a good fight/challenge) the generally good-natured Gryll would just be overwhelmed by Marx's force of personality? Again, same with MagoRanza. Nothing against the pairing but w/ my takes on the characters, I feel like Taranza would be lost in Magolor's depths.

I also worry that in a MaruGuri pairing, Gryll would spend more time wrangling Marx away from his more dangerous habits and it would eventually feel confining to Marx? Whereas that's a dynamic that feels pretty natural with two sibling-esque characters.

With two agents of chaos like Marx and Magolor, there's a fear they'll encourage each other to TRULY dangerous stunts (and if you believe Marx baited Magolor into the Master Crown, then they absolutely do) but at the same time, they're probably best suited to knowing their own limits? At the very least, there shouldn't be a power imbalance there, emotional or magical.

Of the four magic-users, only Magolor is a fully realized character. Taranza comes in second but still has a TON of gaps. Marx is mostly made of HC at this point, and Gryll is nearly 100% that.

So you can really see them as any way you want! And if you like coupling the magic-users, MaruGuri is a more natural way to "pair the spares" than trying to put Taranza and Gryll together. Or MagoGryll. Or MaruRanza for that matter! (Or you could skip the headache and just polycule them??)

EDIT: I FORGOT that Marx Soul also has pointed toe shoes that are a lot like Gryll's! Really weird connection, but there you go!

Hot Chrysanthemum and Cold Brew White Tea.

It was currently summer, a season one wouldn’t think snowmen would thrive in. This was generally true, as a normal snowman would melt away. Fortunately for everyone that knew it, Chilly was not a regular snowman.

Sitting in its house, it sat in its living room as the sun beat down on Dreamland. As it was one of the hottest days of the year, the snowman had been allowed a day off from work. Chilly had decided that its vacation day was best spent being as lazy as possible, currently sitting on its armchair with a book.

Even though it was supposed to be the snowman’s day off from work, it knew one of its friends would arrive to end it. Maybe it would be Kirby, wanting to have a picnic with all of their friends? Or Prince Fluff, wanting someone to knit with? The most likely option was Magolor, barging into its house to ask it some benign question about Dreamlandian culture. 

KNOCK! KNOCK! KNOCK!

Oh, great, there was already someone here.

Turning away from its book, it narrowed its eyes at the door. That definitely was not Kirby’s knocking pattern, as they didn’t really knock. It also didn’t fit Fluff, as he always followed an odd, musical pattern. So all that left was…

“CHILLY!”

Magolor.

He had already entered the house at this point, not seeming to care if Chilly replied or not. Closing the door behind him, he quickly approached the armchair.

“So… Um…” Clearing his throat, the mage adjusted his scarf and cloak. “I need some advice… Please.”

Bookmarking its book, it raised a brow towards him. “What kind? You know I only give three kinds of advice: moral, financial, and—”

“I need relationship advice,” he cut in, “It might be romantic? He’s my friend, though.”

Oh. Oh. 

Magolor had a crush on someone. One of his other friends.

“Thank NOVA,” it sighed, earning a perplexed look from the alien. “Sit down, Mags. This is gonna be a long one.”

. . .

The two were now sitting at Chilly’s dining table. The snowman was sipping on a cup of cold white tea, while the alien awkwardly held a cup of chrysanthemum tea. Magolor had been staring at the flower floating in his cup, ears occasionally twitching as it stained the water yellow.

Lowering its cup, Chilly looked at him quizzically. “You alright?”

For several minutes, Magolor did not answer. Then, he said, “Yellow chrysanthemums mean ‘slighted love’ in Floralian flower language.”

It narrowed its eyes at that, though it didn’t bother questioning how he knew that. Instead, it asked, “... Bad choice?”

“No, it’s fine.” His ear twitched. Knowing that Chilly definitely noticed that nervous tick, he sighed, “Just… nerves getting to me, haha!”

“Alright, then spill,” it lifted a hand to gesture with, “I can’t help if I don’t know what’s going on.”

Taking in a deep breath, Magolor did just that.

“Okay, so storytime!” He giggled, tugging his scarf upwards, “Last week, me and my friend—Taranza, you’ve heard of him, right?—were stargazing and stuff. It was cold, so we were sharing a blanket. That’s not the weird part, though.”

Chilly nodded, trying to figure out why that name felt familiar to him. It was a unique name, that was for certain. 

“So we’re on the Lor’s deck, and he’s trying to tell me about a constellation. Turns out it’s a Floralian constellation! What’s worse? Dude completely forgets the word in Common, so I’m just trying to figure out what the heck he’s talking about!” He was waving his hands around to add more flare to his story, though it just made him look foolish. “By the end of it, I’m just holding his face like ‘SPIT IT OUT, I KNOW YOU CAN DO IT!’”

Chilly chuckled at that, “You were just yelling at the poor guy?”

“Well, I was nicer than that. But you get what I mean?”

Nodding, it motioned for Magolor to continue.

“Right, so… Turns out he was trying to talk about a dragon!” He chuckled at the memory, “Poor ‘Ranzy was so sleep deprived he couldn’t remember Common…”

It arched a brow at the nickname he had assigned his crush, but it didn’t comment on it. 

“Anyway, so we’re laughing about it for a bit! Then Taranza stops laughing, and I look at him to ask him what’s going on.” He paused, tugging his hood over his face. “I couldn’t see him. Too dark. But I could feel him blushing through my gloves.”

“Huh,” was all it could respond with, before it decided to ask, “What do you think caused that?”

“I don’t know! That’s why I came to ask you!” He lifted his hood to look at Chilly, though his hands were still locked onto it. When he couldn’t find an answer in its eyes, he removed his claws from the garment, letting it return to its normal position. 

“Well, you know him better than me.” It shrugged, its bell jostled by the motion, “Figured you had a theory or two.”

Magolor’s hands returned to his cup, his gaze now fixed on its contents. The longer he stared at it, the more his ears lowered, “Maybe I held his face for too long? Could’ve embarrassed him.”

“He was literally sharing a blanket with you,” before the mage could interrupt it, Chilly continued, “But that is a good theory.”

Silence followed, both stuck thinking on this point. 

“What happened next?”

“I let go of his face.” 

Chilly knew there was something more to that statement, so it prodded, “What else?”

Magolor was still refusing to look at it, his gaze boring into his cup. “We went back inside and never talked about it again.”

“... Can I be honest for a sec?” He nodded, a confused look on his face. “You’re an idiot.”

“Eh?”

“You think holding his face crossed a boundary, right?” His nod was more confident this time. “Then why wouldn’t you ask about it? It’s been a week, he’s probably fine talking about it now!”

It took a bit for Magolor to process this, before realization dawned on him. “Oh.”

“Yeah, exactly.”

“Should I…?”

“Yes, you should talk to him soon,” it sighed, picking up its cup, “Also, finish your tea. It’s supposed to calm you down.”

“Ooooh, that explains it,” Lowering his scarf, he raised the cup to his mouth and took a sip. “Thanks, Chilly. Sorry for… That.”

“It’s fine,” it gave him a humorous grin, a jovial tune in its voice, “I’m sure your loverboy will appreciate an apology, anyway—”

Magolor leapt several feet in the air, nearly splashing his tea onto himself. His ears were pinned to his head, face bright gold, “‘LOVERBOY’?”

… Oh, great. He made a realization I didn’t think about. Letting out a tired sigh, Chilly took another sip of its tea. This was going to take longer than anticipated.

I didn't really know what to do with the "Snowman" prompt, since I never built a snowman irl before. So I figured that I would make Magolor a Menace To Chilly!

My choice is fairly obvious, but what about Magolor?

Favorite thing about him: Even above the shockingly complex and indepth redemption arc or the wardrobe designed to allow him to cry in front of people without them seeing it or the fact that he calls kirby a cool dude my favourite thing about him is his fuckign ears

Least favourite thing about him: capes are hard to draw :(

Favourite line: Do I have to say an actual line or can I mention the part at the end of magolor epilogue where he starts sobbing in front of the portal to the dream kingdom. Either way my answer is the haircut line when you piss him off

my most recent magoranza post vs my first

its kinda crazy how much my art improved after only a few months (the older one is from february and it's currently july)

you see how my line art changed aggressively from me being "mmm smooth art" to "yes thats cool and all but t e x t u r e d b r u s h"

i focused mainly on lineart in that last paragraph but most of everything changed

shading got more aggressive (color burn my savior 🙏), the lineart coloring (idk what terms im using hopefully its self explanatory idk), where i put my watermark, the angle, how i draw the characters (it was like.... my 3rd taranza and 1st ish mags..... rough)

idk its just crazy to me (also BURN MY OLD ARTSTYLE RAAAA) (<- for clarification not the style in general just mainly how i did most regular art stuff like the before mentioned and the fact that i sucked at proportions)

Quick post regarding a future Magoranza post

I have been thinking on making a post each week, while I'm writing A Wonderful Attraction, to analyse a part of the Magolor/Taranza ship. However, I can't really explain why I love so much this ship without delving into spoilers for AWA.

So I decided to make a huge post over-analyzing their relationship and why I love it so much after I finish the story

I also planned to make a post regarding some of the symbolisms, secret details and scrapped ideas that I had for AWA. Furthermore, I planned to show a list of fanfics ideas I have for the future. Tell me what you think about it ;)

Quick note, I'm going to replace most of the mentions of Sectonia in the fanfic to Joronia (I only discovered recently that it was her original name before the transformation). It makes much more sense for Taranza to call her this way.
