Have you ever dreamt of stepping into the vibrant, lush world of Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book? The adventures of Mowgli, Baloo, and Bagheera have captivated audiences for generations, but what if you could experience the magic firsthand? India’s vast and diverse landscapes offer a thrilling opportunity to embark on a Jungle Book-inspired wildlife tour, where the stories come to life amidst towering trees, chattering monkeys, and the occasional roar of a Bengal tiger.
In this guide, we’ll explore the top destinations, activities, and tips for planning your ultimate jungle adventure. Whether you're an avid wildlife enthusiast or simply looking to rekindle your childhood wonder, India’s Jungle Book tours promise an unforgettable experience and jungle book tour
Discover the Heart of Kipling’s India
Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book was set in the dense, mysterious jungles of Central India. Although Kipling himself never visited these forests, his vivid imagination was inspired by tales and accounts of the region’s rich wildlife. Today, you can see the very places that likely fueled his creativity.
Kanha National Park: The Real-Life Inspiration
Kanha National Park in Madhya Pradesh is often cited as the real-life inspiration for Kipling’s The Jungle Book. This park, one of India’s largest and most well-maintained, is home to an array of wildlife that will make you feel like you’ve stepped into Mowgli’s world. The lush sal and bamboo forests, grassy meadows, and ravines create a perfect backdrop for spotting tigers, leopards, wild dogs, and, of course, sloth bears—the inspiration for Baloo.
Top Activities:
Tiger Safari: Embark on an early morning or late afternoon jeep safari for the best chances of spotting the elusive Bengal tiger.
Bird Watching: With over 300 species of birds, Kanha is a paradise for birdwatchers. Keep an eye out for the crested serpent eagle and the racket-tailed drongo.
Nature Walks: Explore the dense jungle on foot with a guided nature walk, where you can learn about the flora and fauna that make this ecosystem so unique.
Pench National Park: Mowgli’s Birthplace
Pench National Park, also located in Madhya Pradesh, is another essential stop on your Jungle Book tour. The Pench River flows through this park, which is believed to be the setting of Mowgli’s adventures. The park’s diverse habitats range from teak forests to open grasslands, providing ample opportunities to spot wildlife.
Top Activities:
Wildlife Safaris: Similar to Kanha, Pench offers exhilarating jeep safaris that take you deep into the jungle. Here, you might encounter leopards, jackals, and even the Indian wolf—another character from Kipling’s tales.
Boat Rides on the Pench River: For a unique perspective, take a boat ride along the Pench River, where you can observe animals coming to the water’s edge for a drink.
Night Safari: Experience the jungle after dark with a night safari, where you can witness the nocturnal activities of various animals.
Bandhavgarh National Park: The Land of Tigers
Bandhavgarh National Park, also in Madhya Pradesh, boasts one of the highest densities of Bengal tigers in the world. This park’s dramatic landscape of rugged hills and dense forests makes it a prime location for tiger sightings. Bandhavgarh is also steeped in history, with ancient caves and temples scattered throughout the park, adding a mystical element to your adventure.
Top Activities:
Jeep and Elephant Safaris: Bandhavgarh offers both jeep and elephant safaris, giving you multiple ways to explore the jungle and increase your chances of spotting a tiger.
Historical Exploration: Visit the Bandhavgarh Fort, an ancient structure surrounded by wildlife, and the Shesh Shaiya statue, a massive reclining statue of Lord Vishnu.
Photography Tours: For photography enthusiasts, specialized tours focus on capturing the perfect shot of the park’s wildlife in their natural habitat.

Desi dinosaurs!
Whenever I read the tagline from Steven Spielberg's movie Jurassic Park - "when Dinosaurs ruled the world", I wondered, did they also rule India? Or were these mega-predators only a western phenomenon?
Turns out, between 200 million years and 65 million years ago, more than 20 species of dinosaurs roamed across Meghalaya, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh and Telangana. It is believed that the largest and the last ever dinosaurs roamed in this part of the world.
Don't believe that? Read on. Because, therein lies a tale.
About 100 kms from Baroda (Vadodara) in Gujarat is an old, sleepy town called Balanisor. 10 km from there is a small village called Raiyoli. Once upon a time, an old woman used to live in Raiyoli. She had magical culinary skills. It was said of her, "Her curries would cure ailments, hypnotize officials, calm the angry and excite the unruffled."
Balanisor also hosted the estate of the former royal family of the 17th century Babi dynasty. The estate has now been converted into a 8-room hotel, managed by Princess Aliya Sultana Babi and her brother.
In October, 2003, young Princess Aliya was on her rounds in her estate, when she passed the old woman’s hut. An intoxicating aroma filled the air and enticed her inside. The princess found the old woman grinding spices with a odd looking mortar and pestle, then mixing them into a curry that was slowly cooking on an earthen stove. Princess Aliya borrowed the pestle from the old woman, studied it and found that it was a dinosaur egg!
In the early 1980s, palaeontologists stumbled upon dinosaur bones and fossils during a regular geological survey of this mineral-rich area. They found dinosaur egg hatcheries and fossils of at least 13 species of dinosaurs, more than 100 million years old. It is now believed that Gujarat is home to one of the largest clutch of dinosaur hatcheries in the world. So well-protected are the fossilised eggs found here that many researchers call them the best-preserved eggs in the world after the ones found in France.
Today Balanisor hosts India's first and only Dinosaur fossil park. It is also called India's Jurassic park. Gujarat tourism officials talk about Dinosaur Tourism and Princess Aaliya, also called the Dinosaur Princess, conducts guided tours of the fossil park.
I was not aware of all of this until I read an interesting book called Quirky History. It contains a chapter on Dinosaurs that are believed to have roamed in India. I checked them out on Google and Wikipedia, and found details about a few pretty interesting breeds.
The first one is named Titanosaurus indicus, the first Indian dinosaur to be discovered, in 1828, by William Henry Sleeman, an administrator with the East India Company, at the base of the Bara Simla Hill near Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh. This is how the bugger looked.
Another one was called Barapasaurus Tagorei. Bara = Big, Pa = Feet. Almost 300 bones of at least six Barapasaurus were excavated from the present day town of Pochampalli, Telangana, in 1961. Interestingly, the species’ surname, Tagorei, was chosen because the first year of fieldwork on the site at Pochampalli was carried out in the centenary year of Rabindranath Tagore’s birth.
The next one is my favorite. I had a great time reading about it. I was almost ROFL. Its was called Jainosaurus. Quite like the Jains, this dinosaur was a herbivore. But that's not why it's called Jainosaurus. This dinosaur actually gets its name from the palaeontologist Sohan Lal Jain, who worked on figuring out the skull of this animal. Its fossils were also discovered near Jabalpur. The Jainosaurus is especially interesting because it is among the last dinosaur species to live on earth.
Some dinosaurs were named after the places where their fossils were discovered. For example, Jaklapallisaurus was discovered near Jaklapalli in Andhra Pradesh. You can easy guess where Jubbulpuria was found.
One was named Isisaurus, after the Indian Statistical Institute!
I swear guys, I am not making this up. Pls check it out on Google if you wish. :-)
The last one, for now, is Bruhathkayosaurus, from the Sanskrit Bruhath-kaya, which means huge-bodied. It is believed to be the largest dinosaur that ever lived. Its fossils were found in Tiruchirappalli district of Tamil Nadu.
You can check out some of the other species for yourselves - Rahiolisaurus gujaratensis, Rajasaurus, Kotasaurus etc.
I will sign off with a fun fact. In Balasinor, paleontologists have found fossilized remains of a snake that dined on dinosaur eggs. A 67 million-year-old snake skeleton was found in a dinosaur nest, wrapped around a baby dinosaur.
Next time I go to Ahmedabad or Baroda, I must take time out to visit the Dinosaur Fossil Park in Balasinor.

Into the Jungle Book: Explore India’s Most Iconic Wildlife Tours
India, a land of diverse landscapes and rich cultural heritage, is also home to some of the world's most extraordinary wildlife. From the majestic Bengal tiger to the elusive snow leopard, India's national parks and wildlife sanctuaries offer a glimpse into the wild heart of this incredible country. For those inspired by Rudyard Kipling's timeless tale, "The Jungle Book," visiting these wild havens is like stepping into the pages of the classic. In this blog, we will explore India's most iconic wildlife tours, focusing on the enchanting jungle book tour that lets you follow Mowgli's footsteps.
The Legacy of "The Jungle Book"
Rudyard Kipling's "The Jungle Book," published in 1894, has captivated readers for over a century. The story of Mowgli, a boy raised by wolves in the Indian jungle, is set in the lush forests of Central India. The characters—Bagheera, Baloo, Shere Khan, and others—are inspired by the region's natural wildlife, making these jungles the perfect setting for anyone who dreams of experiencing the story firsthand.
What is the Jungle Book Tour?
The "Jungle Book Tour" is a unique wildlife experience that takes you deep into the heart of the forests that inspired Kipling's masterpiece. This tour is centered around the national parks and tiger reserves of Madhya Pradesh, particularly Kanha and Pench National Parks. These parks are known for their dense forests and diverse wildlife and their connection to "The Jungle Book."
Kanha National Park: The Land of Shere Khan
Kanha National Park is one of India's most famous tiger reserves and is often considered the real-life setting for "The Jungle Book." The park's vast meadows, dense sal forests, and bamboo thickets are reminiscent of the landscapes described in Kipling's book. Kanha is home to a significant population of Bengal tigers, and if you're lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of the mighty Shere Khan himself.
Besides tigers, Kanha boasts an impressive variety of wildlife, including leopards, sloth bears, wild dogs, and the rare barasingha (swamp deer). The park's well-maintained safari trails offer excellent opportunities for wildlife sightings, making it a must-visit destination on the Jungle Book Tour.
Pench National Park: Mowgli's Playground
Pench National Park, located in the Seoni and Chhindwara districts of Madhya Pradesh, is another key destination on the Jungle Book Tour. This park is often considered the true inspiration for Kipling's Jungle, as it lies in the same region where the author set his story. Pench's dense forests and meandering rivers provide the perfect backdrop for imagining Mowgli's adventures.
The park is home to a healthy population of tigers and other iconic species like leopards, wolves, and jackals. Birdwatchers will also be delighted by the variety of avian species that inhabit the park. A safari through Pench offers a magical experience, with the chance to spot wildlife at every turn.
Other Iconic Wildlife Tours in India
While the Jungle Book Tour is a highlight for any wildlife enthusiast, India has much more to offer regarding iconic wildlife experiences. Here are a few other tours that should be on your radar:
Ranthambore National Park: The Royal Bengal Tiger’s Domain
Ranthambore National Park in Rajasthan is one of India's most famous tiger reserves. The park's dramatic landscape, dominated by the ancient Ranthambore Fort and dotted with lakes, is a stunning backdrop for wildlife safaris. Ranthambore is known for its high density of tigers, making it one of the best places in the world to see these majestic cats in the wild. The park also hosts a variety of other wildlife, including leopards, crocodiles, and a wide range of bird species.
Jim Corbett National Park: India’s First National Park
Jim Corbett National Park in Uttarakhand is considered India's first national park, established in 1936. Named after the famous hunter-turned-conservationist Jim Corbett, the park is renowned for its Bengal tigers and elephant population. The park's varied terrain, which includes grasslands, forests, and rivers, makes it a biodiversity hotspot. A safari in Jim Corbett offers not only the chance to see tigers but also the opportunity to explore one of India's most historically significant wildlife reserves and east to west india travel.
Kaziranga National Park: The Home of the One-Horned Rhino
Located in Assam, Kaziranga National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the last strongholds of the Indian one-horned rhinoceros. The park's vast floodplains and tall grasslands are the perfect habitat for these prehistoric-looking creatures. In addition to rhinos, Kaziranga is home to elephants, tigers, wild buffalo, and various bird species. A wildlife tour in Kaziranga is a must for those looking to experience the unique flora and fauna of Northeast India.
Planning Your Jungle Book Tour
If you're planning to embark on the Jungle Book Tour, here are a few tips to ensure you have the best experience:
Best Time to Visit: The best time to visit Kanha and Pench National Parks is from October to June, with the peak season being November to April. The weather is pleasant during this time, and wildlife sightings are more frequent.
Safari Booking: It is advisable to book your safaris well in advance, as these parks are popular among tourists, and slots fill up quickly. Kanha and Pench offer jeep safaris and, in some cases, elephant safaris.
Accommodation: Several lodges and resorts near Kanha and Pench cater to different budgets. For a more immersive experience, consider staying in eco-friendly lodges with guided nature walks and other activities.
