The BJP's Strategy Behind the 'Great Congress Exodus' in Madhya Pradesh
In recent months, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has claimed a significant surge in the number of Congress leaders and workers defecting to its ranks in Madhya Pradesh. Former Bhopal corporator Sanjay Varma, now a dedicated BJP member, finds himself in a unique position, actively engaging with Congress workers to facilitate their transition to the BJP fold.
Tumblr media
Under the stewardship of former state Home Minister Narottam Mishra, a committee has been diligently overseeing the induction of Congress members into the BJP. According to their data, over 16,000 Congress leaders and workers, along with a few from other parties, have joined the BJP since March 21. This surge is strategically timed ahead of the upcoming elections, with the BJP eyeing victory in all 29 Lok Sabha constituencies in Madhya Pradesh.
However, the Congress disputes these claims, asserting that the actual number of defections is much lower. Regardless, it’s evident that the BJP’s primary focus in Madhya Pradesh is to dismantle the Congress organizationally, aiming for a sweeping victory in the upcoming elections.
The BJP’s recruitment drive has seen notable figures from the Congress, including former Union Ministers and MLAs, crossing over to the ruling party. The emphasis has been on attracting booth-level workers, with plans to decentralize the joining committee down to the booth level. This strategic move aims to further weaken the Congress’s grassroots support base.
The exodus from the Congress is particularly pronounced in districts where the BJP has historically been dominant. Dissatisfaction with the Congress leadership, coupled with promises of better prospects in the BJP, has driven many to switch allegiances. Criticisms of the current state Congress president Jitu Patwari’s leadership style and lack of vision have also contributed to the defections.
In response, the Congress frames these departures as a “purification campaign,” asserting that true party members remain steadfast. However, the BJP sees this influx of former Congress members as an opportunity to strengthen its position and consolidate power in Madhya Pradesh.
As the political landscape continues to evolve in Madhya Pradesh, the ‘great Congress exodus’ orchestrated by the BJP reflects the complex dynamics of power and influence shaping the region’s political future.

Bhopal Satpura Bhawan fire: Thousands of MP govt files burnt, but what it means in digital age
Thousands of Madhya Pradesh government files were gutted in the massive fire at the Satpura Bhawan in Bhopal. But what does files being reduced to ashes mean in this digital age when data is stored on hard disks and in the cloud?
Tumblr media
The massive fire that broke out at Bhopal's Satpura Bhawan has resulted in the burning of many important files kept there. The building houses several Madhya Pradesh government departments. But were all documents digitised? And what does a fire destroying physical files mean in the age of computers?
A masive fire started on the third floor of Satpura Bhawan on Monday evening and spread to the sixth floor. The building houses offices of various departments of the Madhya Pradesh government.
On Tuesday, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan called a review meeting regarding the fire, which was attended by senior officers. They presented facts before the chief minister and other ministers regarding the blaze.
As thousands of files and assets were engulfed in the massive fire, the Opposition hit out at the BJP-led government for “corruption” and “foul play” ahead of the state Assembly election due later this year.
But, how many files were actually burnt? And will hard drives or digitised copies of those files help in retrieving them? The other big question, were all documents really digitised?
How many files were burnt in the fire?
The fire allegedly gutted furniture worth Rs 25 crore and over 12,000 important files. However, Rajesh Rajoura, a member of the committee formed to investigate the fire, said, "It is not possible to go inside the building. Hence, it would not be factually correct to say how many files have been burnt."
He said the number of affected files can only be ascertained after the investigation is complete.
Which departments were affected the most?
Departments like Tribal Affairs, Health, Forest, Chief Minister Monitoring Case, Public Grievances and National Information System operate on the sixth floor of Satpura Bhawan. Hence, the documents of these departments were subject to fire.
Documents related to the establishment of health services, complaints branch and assembly questions kept in these departments have been burnt. The service records, complaint documents and budget accounting documents of employees on the fourth floor of the building were also burnt to ashes.
Were all Satpura Bhawan documents digitised?
There is no data available on the number of health department files kept at Bhopal's Satpura Bhawan, that have also been digitalised, sources said. However, some departments have heavy reliance on written documents, like the complaint department.
Were files related to Covid-related payments burnt?
According to some reports, files related to payments made to hospitals during the Covid-19 pandemic were also gutted in the fire. However, an official confirmation in this regard is still awaited.
Which files were not affected by the fire?
Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Narottam Mishra said that documents related to purchasing and tendering in the offices were not affected by the fire. Medicines, equipment and furniture for hospitals were also not affected, as they were kept on the second floor.
Will hard disks help in retrieving burnt files?
Talking about files that were burnt in the fire, MP Home Minister Narottam Mishra said that information about state and central government schemes will be recovered from the hard disk, although it may require some work. He said, "Many files were saved in digital format. So it would be wrong to say that files and records were burnt in the fire.
What will happen to complaints and queries raised by people?
Questions asked by people to the MLAs are answered in a digital format. However, most questions are sent in a written format, as compared to those received via email. It is feared that the written complaints sent by people may have burnt to ashes, as fire also broke out at that department.
When will the investigation in this case be over?
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has announced a committee to investigate the cause of the fire at Satpura Bhawan. The committee will present the investigation report of this fire in the next three days. ACS Home Rajesh Rajoura, PS Urban Neeraj Mandloi, PS PWD Sukhbir Singh and the ADG Fire will be part of the committee.

36 dead as roof of temple stepwell collapses in Indore, CM Chouhan visits injured
Home Minister Narottam Mishra among others who went to meet the kin of the deceased at a community hall in the city's Patel Nagar area had to return hastily following sloganeering, said sources.
Tumblr media
BHOPAL: Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan visited Indore on Friday, a day after 36 lives were lost in a tragic temple stepwell accident.
The concrete slab-roof covering an ancient stepwell ('bavdi') caved in during the Ram Navami celebration at the Beleshwar Jhulelal Mahadev Temple in the city's Patel Nagar area, on Thursday at 11 am. Several people were trapped inside for hours.
Overcrowding in the temple premises is said to be the reason for the collapse.
After the retrieval of 21 more bodies early morning today, the total death toll from Thursday’s tragedy rose to 35.
With the recovery of another body, identified as that of 53-year-old old Sunil Solanki, the official death toll is now 36.
The search operation is likely to be over now with no possibility of finding more bodies in the stepwell.
The search operations gained momentum after the process of dewatering the well (bearing water up to 13-14 feet) and with the Army's help.
Chief Minister Chouhan met with the injured including twin sisters at a private hospital.
He then visited the tragedy site to take stock of the rescue operations carried out by the Indian Army in association with the National Disaster Response Fund and State Disaster Emergency Response Force teams.
The CM said: “Directions have been issued to conduct a state-wide survey and an inquiry of all such covered 'bavdis' and 'kuwans' (step-wells and wells) to ensure there is no repetition of Thursday-like tragedies.”
The deceased included 20 women aged between 24 and 84 years, 12 men aged between 26 years and 65 years and three children, including two boys aged two years and eight years and a 13-year-old girl.
According to unconfirmed sources, minister colleagues of the CM, including Home Minister Narottam Mishra and Water Resources Minister Tulsi Silawat, and Indore Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargava, who went to meet the kin of the deceased and the injured at a community hall in the residential colony where the mishap had happened, had to return hastily following slogan shouting.
A magisterial probe has already been instituted to probe the mishap.
Also, a criminal case u/s 304 IPC (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) has been registered at the Juni Indore police station, against the chairman and secretary of the private trust which managed the affairs at the Beleshwar Mahadev Jhoolelal Temple – where the tragedy happened on Thursday.
On Thursday, while the state government had announced Rs 5 lakh each to the kin of the deceased devotees and Rs 50,000 for each of the injured, an ex-gratia sum of Rs 2 lakh each was announced from the PM National Relief Fund for the kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 to each of the injured.

Objecting to the “obscene” dance by Bollywood star Sunny Leone in a music video in a song “madhuban mein Radhika naache” from the 1960 film Kohinoor, Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Narottam Mishra has given the star and music composer Saqib Toshi three days to remove the music video.
Mishra — who added Leone to a growing list of brands and artistic content he deems objectionable and has threatened with legal action — has claimed the video that accompanies the song hurts Hindu sentiments.
While talking to the media here on Sunday, he said, “Some people continuously hurt Hindu sentiments... there are temples for Radha... we pray to her. Toshi can make songs concerning his religion, but such songs offend us. I will take legal advice and action will be taken if the video is not taken down in three days.”
