KUHNS: FAN FAVORITE TRAVIS HOWE INKS DEAL WITH GREENVILLE
Tumblr media
Swamp Rabbits' pugilist re-signs for 2019–20 season BY: Jordan Kuhns, Greenville Swamp Rabbits GREENVILLE, S.C. — Fan-favorite forward Travis Howe has signed a Standard Player Contract to return to the Greenville Swamp Rabbits for the 2019–20 season. Howe, an unforgettable physical presence on the ice, and a strong presence in the Greenville community will look to only improve on his already great first impression on the fanbase and beyond. "I think Greenville is an unbelievable spot. The town itself is incredible. The fans are top-notch. They stuck by us in tough times, and they are as rowdy as any other fans I've been around," Howe said. "It's a town that loves the sport and it can only grow. It was an easy choice to decide to come back." Howe entered his Greenville career known as a player unafraid to drop the gloves and protect his teammates. He did just that with three fights and 29 penalty minutes in his preseason debut against Atlanta on October 4, 2018. Howe showed no fear in his AHL debut after his call-up to the Tucson Roadrunners, with a fight against Bokondji Imama of the Ontario Reign on December 8, 2018. Howe finished 17th in league penalty minutes with 169, even while playing half as many games as his competitors. He showed an ability to keep up with the game and post some offense, with a pair of goals and assists, coming in a time where he saw time on the top line with Michael Pelech as a centerman. His versatility came into play when injuries decimated the blue line, and he reverted to his original position he played in juniors. The 25-year-old worked closely with the local humane society without any fanfare this past season, with a true love of dogs, including his own canine companion, Daisy. Due to his commitment to that cause, and his willingness to embrace each and every fan in Greenville and take part in community engagement events, as well as being a strong supporter of the Swamp Rabbits Booster Club, he was nominated for the ECHL Community Service Award. Community service is in Howe's blood. He won the NAHL Community Service Award as a member of the Corpus Christi IceRays in 2015 where he logged over 70 hours of service. He assisted in a fundraiser during the team's Childhood Cancer Awareness Night for an IceRays fan's Stage IV neuroblastoma treatments. Howe's first year as a professional in 2015 saw him begin his time with the Berlin River Drivers of the Federal Hockey League, and the Mississippi RiverKings of the Southern Professional Hockey League, but after that, united with head coach Kevin Kerr and the Macon Mayhem. "I played for Kerrsy prior to last year, so I know what he's about," Howe continued. "Last year's result made us all angry, and we're coming back with a vengeance. We are going to turn this around. "The affiliation with Carolina helps us out tremendously. With or without those guys, we will have the right guys in the room to compete for a Kelly Cup championship." Howe caught on at the ECHL level with the Utah Grizzlies for two seasons before being acquired in a trade along with Pelech for Caleb Herbert on July 25, 2018. The following players are now under contract for the 2019–20 season: F - Michael Pelech (29) F - Johno May (25) F - Travis Howe (25) More signings will take place throughout the offseason, so stay tuned to the Swamp Rabbits on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

KUHNS: SWAMP RABBITS SIGN CHRIS IZMIRLIAN
Tumblr media
Top-caliber forward joins Swamp Rabbits roster BY: Jordan Kuhns, Greenville Swamp Rabbits GREENVILLE, S.C. — The Greenville Swamp Rabbits have announced that Chris Izmirlian has signed a pro contract to join the team for the 2018–19 season. The high-flying playmaker will add a strong offensive presence to the attack for the upcoming season. The 2017–18 season saw Izmirlian make three pro stops, including the Knoxville Ice Bears, the Macon Mayhem, and the Quad City Mallards. In 25 games at the SPHL level, Izmirlian added eight goals and 22 assists, good for 30 points, and then racked up 17 points in 36 games for the Quad City Mallards at the ECHL level. “I’m really looking forward to getting to Greenville, and extremely excited to get the opportunity to play under coach Kerr again,” Izmirlian said. “I know he’s going to do everything he can to make the team extremely competitive, and I want to do everything I can to make this team a contender this season.” His short stint in Macon saw him be named Player of the Week once after a seven-point outburst, and at the time of his loan to Quad City on January 17, he led SPHL rookies in assists and point scoring, and also ranked third in overall assists and sixth in overall point scoring in the SPHL. Izmirlian was a mainstay on the Mallards’ penalty kill upon his transition to the ECHL level, immediately improving that mark right after his arrival. “I had Chris in Macon last year. He’s a very skilled, fearless player that the fans are really going to like,” said head coach Kevin Kerr. “He’s got a great hockey IQ, great skill, and he’s another guy that who is really excited about coming here to Greenville. He’s very versatile, and can play all positions up front, and can add some secondary scoring to our lineup.” “He’s a fearless, competitive kid who isn’t a fighter, but he’s not afraid either.” The 25-year-old played his college hockey at Yale University, played in 110 games, and notched 40 points. He showed his responsibility by only being nabbed for only 50 penalty minutes in his collegiate career, and was a +17. Even more staggering, Izmirlian only racked up four penalty minutes in 25 games at the SPHL level, and just six penalty minutes in 36 games at the ECHL level. The Swamp Rabbits have signed 21 players for the upcoming season. The full list can be found below, or on the offseason player tracker at SwampRabbits.com. Forwards (12): Chris Izmirlian, Jarrid Privitera, Dylan Vander Esch, Stephen Pierog, Austen Brassard, Mike Pelech, Travis Howe, Alex Globke, Timmy Moore, Will Merchant, J.T. Henke and Johno May. In addition to assuming the head coaching position, Kerr will also take on the role of Director of Hockey Operations. Kerr has eight years of head coaching experience spanning four different franchises. “I am very excited and proud to hire Kevin Kerr as our new Head Coach of the Greenville Swamp Rabbits,” said team President & CEO Steve Donner. “It was my goal to bring a coach to the team that has won championships both as a player and as a coach. I am determined to build a winning culture in Greenville with hard working, physical teams. “Kevin worked hard for everything he has achieved as a player and as a coach,” Donner continued, “and he brings the same work ethic and desire to win with him to Greenville. His teams are competitive and fun to watch, and very hard to play against.” Kerr has guided the Macon Mayhem of the SPHL for the last three seasons. Since assuming the role of Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations/General Manager in 2015, he compiled a 94-56-11-7 record. Macon qualified for the post season each of the team’s first three seasons and collected a President’s Cup Championship in 2017. “I'd like to thank Steve Donner and the entire Swamp Rabbits organization for this great opportunity. I'm excited to come to Greenville and help build a winning team, one that's hard to play against and fun to watch,” said Kerr. Prior to taking over as the first coach in Macon Mayhem history, the North Bay, Ontario native spent two seasons with the New York Bobcats in the EHL. His resurgence into coaching came after a five-year hiatus. After wrapping up his playing career, Kerr took over the North Bay Skyhawks of the NOJHL for his first shot behind the bench. Kerr then took over as head coach of the Flint Generals for two seasons where he had previously played 417 games, tallied 674 points (356G, 318A), and accrued 1,421 PIMS across eight seasons. Kerr was one of two players to have his number retired by the Generals and led the organization in points and goals when the club folded in 2010. As a player, Kerr was selected by the Buffalo Sabres with a third-round pick in the 1986 NHL Draft. After logging four seasons in the OHL, he began his pro career with the Rochester Americans in the 1987-88 season and led the team in PIMS with 352 in addition to 29 points (18G, 11A). Kerr retired after the 2004-05 season after playing professional hockey for 18 seasons across 15 organizations and six leagues. At the time of Kerr’s retirement, his 677 goals were a career minor league record, while compiling 3,706 PIMS. He also helped capture an AHL championship with the Portland Pirates, a Turner Cup title with the Flint Generals, and was the 1993-94 CoHL MVP. Read the full article
