THE EXPOSED (short) - Review
DISTRIBUTOR: Pending
Tumblr media
SYNOPSIS: After a grueling shift, a nurse returns home, unaware of the sinister presence that awaits her, a presence more malevolent than anything she could have ever envisioned.
REVIEW: Actress and filmmaker Xenia Leblanc, renowned for her portrayal of Young Red in Netflix's acclaimed series "Orange Is the New Black," ventures behind the camera without relying on CGI or VFX. Leblanc crafts a captivating 5-minute narrative reminiscent of Hitchcock's suspenseful style, showcasing her range as a storyteller and artist. THE EXPOSED had its premiere at the Dances with Films Festival in Los Angeles on June 22nd, 2024, as part of the Midnight Shorts block.
Crafting a compelling narrative in under 10 minutes is no easy feat, Leblanc masterfully achieves this by establishing a simple character, skillfully building the viewer's anticipation, and then unexpectedly flipping the story's climax - all within a concise 5 minutes. This potent combination of narrative elements, presented in a time-efficient manner, effectively sets up the climax for maximum impact.
In an era where filmmakers heavily depend on digital tools to enhance their projects, Leblanc takes a refreshing approach by relying on fundamental filmmaking tools such as a camera, lights, lenses, tripod, and editing to create her captivating shots. The brevity of her film allows for precise framing and cuts, building tension and suspense that leaves a lasting impression on the viewer. Leblanc skillfully employs misdirection, ensuring that the viewer experiences the same surprise as the characters during the climactic reveal. While the film lacks at composer credit, it incorporates a minimal score, primarily towards the end, to intensify the emotional impact of the climactic scene..
In the film, actress Mack Ogden shines as the lead, carrying the narrative with grace. She expertly crafts an emotional journey for the viewer, delivering a powerful and believable performance. Despite limited screen time to develop her character, Ogden creates a likable persona that resonates with the audience. Her ability to convey complex emotions allows us to connect with her character on a deeper level, making her performance a highlight of the film.
I strongly recommend THE EXPOSED, a captivating short film directed by Xenia Leblanc. You can explore more of her work at her website www.leblancxenia.com. I was genuinely taken aback by her prolificacy as a short filmmaker. Her portfolio boasts a diverse range of films spanning various genres, showcasing her immense talent and creativity. It's evident that Xenia Leblanc possesses a unique vision and a remarkable ability to captivate audiences with her storytelling. Based on the quality of her work, it's only a matter of time before she makes her feature film debut.

Since 31.10.2022 would have been his 80th birthday, here is a small compilation of non-mash line deliveries and accent choices of (inter)national icon David Ogden Stiers.
I really wanted to include the “look, babygirl” line from First Man in Rome but I didn’t manage to rip it so please find comfort in knowing this line exists. And unfortunately there is no footage of the “yes, Edna, even endive” from the Magic Show, so just imagine that one as well.

Westerhill Mines
In 1204, construction was completed for an airstrip near the Westerhill Mines and workers' town in order to facilitate the importation of new workers. This airstrip would become Gentry County Airfield in the years to come.
Starting between 1205 and 1206, however, a boom in ebony mining from nearby Ebony Valley lowered ebony prices. Dave Morriston, the owner of Westerhill Mines, committed to preserving Westerhill profit margins by freezing pay raises as well as forcing workers to work longer hours for the same pay. In 1211, the mine workers, led by Merlin Kent Ogden, united and carried out a strike. Not wishing to negotiate, Dave Morriston resigned from his position and was replaced by George Cabot, a close in-law and family friend to Ogden. Thus, negotiations succeeded in improving pay, hours, and working conditions for the miners. Furthermore, housing in the town was refurbished to facilitate middle-class living standards; and Ogden was rewarded for his efforts with an especially large residence that would become the address: 124 West Mason Street.
In 1217, the dominance of Ebony Valley over the industry forced the Westerhill Mines to close. This led the economy in the former miners' town to shift to that of trading shops, predominantly those of the spellcrafter trade. While this provided stability, Combrian leadership in Hasphitat desired for more of a purpose to be served by this town. They were soon approached by Robert Barrington, who proposed to purchase the preserved lands owned by the Emoran Heritage Foundation and build a special academy to provide a second chance to those Combrians who failed out of the Combrian education system.
Combrian law required all Combrian citizens to attend school through the level of a University bachelor degree. Any person in the University system receiving failing grades would be expelled from said University system and made to take a civil service job with the option of going through military service first in order to be considered for better promotions and pay raises. The issue here was that beginning around the 1210s and 1220s, a growing number of Combrian citizens believed this doctrine to be unfair and furthermore believed that Combrian students should be given second chances.
And thus Barrington rose to the occasion by proposing a new alternative curriculum vested in the construction of the Westerhill Institute of Academic Rehabilitation.
Westerhill Institute for Academic Rehabilitation
A few groups of collective youth working as spellcrafter traders in the former miner town attempted to speak on behalf of the Emorans against the idea of converting the preserved consecrated land to the miner town's immediate South into property developed for this new Institute. However, the Combrian government utterly ignored them and approved Barrington's proposal. Construction began in 1228 and would be completed in the spring of 1231.
The Westerhill Institute of Academic Rehabilitation was "simple-oriented" in its structure, consisting of a vast grid of criss-crossing sidewalks over vast lawns. In each corner square, and in the center square, stood a large structure with a square base. Each structure had a center pillar-wing of rooms, and a pillar-wing in each of its five corners. And each structure was five floors tall. These structures were the Five Schools of the Institute, with the one in the Northwest Corner named the William Peck School of Grammar, the one in the Northeast Corner named the John Arthur School of Science and Spellfire, the one in the Southeast Corner named the John Cracker School of Mathematics, the one in the Southwest Corner named the Michael Kelvin School of History and Law, and the one in the Center Square named the Mack Schrader School of Citizenship. Each School consisted of classrooms on its First Floor and student dormitories on the remaining Floors. The overall design of the Schools and the grounds was designed to be cut-and-dry, as well as large and intimidating in order to incentivize student focus and discipline.
Every student enrolled in the Westerhill Institute was subject to the same basic curriculum: to present what one did to cause academic failure, to receive feedback from the assigned Schoolmaster (mostly shaming), and to complete an assignment schedule given by the said Schoolmaster, with said schedule involving "fundamentals" courses on the affected subject, courses that imposed intense lecture-and-drill. The assignment schedule also required each student to complete a sophisticated project which also involved writing long essays explaining how the student thought to complete each step. This would also be subject to harsh feedback from the Schoolmaster.
Robert Barrington served as the Headmaster of Westerhill Institute from 2 through 23 May 1231, after which he resigned and was replaced by Arnold Stone.
John Fleming, University Establishment
John Fleming was born in December 1208 and grew up in Bridgetown in the District of Ereautea, and pursued a career agenda to become a trade accountant. In 1227, Fleming graduated high school with good grades and enrolled in the local branch of the University of Ereautea. Fleming completed his college freshman year in 1228 with academic distinction, and was recommended to enroll into Bridgetown College, a school independent of the University system and reserved for honors students. Fleming excelled in Bridgetown College for his sophomore year, at the end of which he was accepted into their Upper Division program and assigned a field internship for his junior year. However, Fleming had a political falling-out with one of his peers during this internship, and was made to look as if he was academically incompetent. Fleming as a result was expelled from Bridgetown College and would later have his re-application rejected by the University of Ereautea.
Fleming would work a year as a groundskeeper for the Bridge but then accepted an opportunity he received by letter to enroll in the Westerhill Institute.
Martin Cross was born in 1211, and grew up in Jestopole, where he would pursue a career agenda to be a contract scriptfire planecrafter for the Edoran Kingdom. Cross graduated high school in 1229 and, like Fleming, did so with good grades. That year, Cross enrolled in the University of Combria where he, like Fleming, passed with distinction and was moreover recommended for Upper Division that same school year. For his sophomore year, Cross was tasked with completing a dymensional plane project and presenting it as a proposition to enter the Terredon Royal College in the neighboring Kingdom of the Great North. The project involved creating an imitation of the land and territory of the Duchy of Daylram set in the tenth century. And though it was deemed impressive by Cross' peers, it was utterly rejected by the Royal College, who wrote a scathing complaint to the University of Combria on this. Though the University of Combria did not discipline him over the complaint, Cross had a mental break from the outcome and largely stopped attending classes. The University of Combria would expel him for his resulting attendance issues.
Cross then received a letter to enroll in the Westerhill Institute.
Thomas Snow was born in 1212 and grew up in Ebony Valley in the District of Ereautea to pursue a career as an engineer in ebony and related hardware construction. Like Cross and Fleming, Snow graduated high school in 1230 with good grades, but decided to work one year for one of the Ebony Valley construction companies. In the summer of 1230, before he started his job, Snow trained for and attained his Spellcaster License, an achievement which he made known to his co-workers later that year. This led to abrasion with some of them, including the high manager's son, who set him up to take on an assignment that appeared to simply involve surveying territory to the immediate Northwest for ebony deposits. This turned out to be a set-up, a discovery that Snow and his fellow surveyors only made when they, during the trip out into the wilderness, encountered dangerous wysps kept and then released by the manager's son. One of Snow's surveying crew people ran off and went missing, while Snow saved the other two, discharging spells and killing two wysps in the process. They and the person that ran off were rescued, but the incident did not pass without consequence for Snow. He would later be charged with endangerment for not realizing the area surveyed was prone to wysps, and also be penalized for the killing of the wysps themselves as they were considered by the Remikran Union to be an endangered species. Snow had a lawyer who managed to reduce the sentence for the incident to simply a fine, but this would also result in academic implications later on.
Snow received good grades during his freshman year, 1230-31. However, the University of Ereautea received documentation regarding the wysp incident and the legal proceedings. Though they did not consider this a criminal disqualification, the University leadership cited Snow's apparent lack of knowledge for biology and geography to be grounds for requiring a "remedial exam" in those subjects. Though Snow knew the material, the wording of this exam led him to failing it. Snow was then made to reconsider his career path through an "aptitude exam." And while this exam was open-ended, it was possible for a student to fail it if they did not demonstrate measurable strength for any particular career path. Like the first exam, the wording of this second exam led Snow to receiving a failing score; and so as a consequence, Snow was destined to be expelled from the University system.
Westerhill Institute enrollment was selective in nature and was done by invitation. However, Snow, in the course of working in the ebony mining industry, had befriended Merlin Kent Ogden, who worked closely with the Institute and leveraged them into enrolling Snow.
And so in the summer of 1231, John Fleming, Martin Cross, and Thomas Snow became acquainted with one another.
Such a mutual acquaintance began with Cross and Snow, who were assigned roommates and were quarreling with one another over menial logistical matters. Fleming overheard the arguments and summoned Cross and Snow to his room, where the three of them shared their backgrounds and their common hatred toward the oppressive Combrian education system. Fleming was inspired by Cross' dymensional plane project and suggested that he and Snow build one here at Westerhill. Cross initially dismissed the idea as unfeasible, but Snow voiced disagreement, stating that Merlin Kent Ogden had the hardware and venue to build such an apparatus. Cross surrendered to the idea; and several days later, they met with Ogden, who agreed to the arrangement.
On 13 June 1231, Arnold Stone arrived at the Westerhill Institute to start his tenure as the new Headmaster. The next evening, he was visited by Cross and Snow, who were sent to him by the Master of the Kelvin School for poor academic performance; both students had failed an exam due to not being able to form words for answers quickly enough due to lack of sleep. Upon further investigation, Stone learned that the two students had stayed up late into the night working on the dymensional plane with Merlin Kent Ogden. In response, Stone asked to travel to 124 West Mason Street to see this dymensional plane project.
On 19 June, Stone made the visit to the venue, where instead of moving to shut down the project, Stone was impressed with it and requested to have it moved to the Library located in the Mack Schrader School. The next day, this move was made. And on 21 June, Cross and Snow presented this dymensional plane to the other Westerhill students, who took great interest. The following day, Headmaster Stone made an announcement to all Westerhill students and faculty that this dymensional plane project, now known as simply the Project, would serve as a central part of a new curriculum. Stone furthermore declared that all students and faculty would be termed equally as "Scholars" and that faculty were required to pose research questions and provide resourceful information. Stone also banned the oppressive grading system for academic performance and declared the Library open to all Scholars.
However, George Kormell, Master of the Mack Schrader School, reported Stone to the Combria Department of Education for "significant and detrimental educational curriculum deviations." The Education Department accepted the request to press this charge, and subsequently sent a letter to Stone on 13 September, dismissing him from the Headmaster position. Kormell was assigned as the next Headmaster, prompting waves of protests from the students.
As the new Headmaster, on 17 September 1231, Kormell announced his intent to re-instill the old lecture-and-drill curriculum. However, the students staged a mass-walkout and began forming human chains around each of the Five Schools, chanting "Bring back Stone!"
On 18 September, protests escalated, as students began throwing rocks and destroying property. The Masters of the John Arthur, Michael Kelvin, and William Peck Schools resigned, as Headmaster Kormell called in martial law, who, on that day, shot dead John Fleming during a heated confrontation in front of the Mack Schrader School.
This further enraged the student protestors, who, that evening, stormed the Schools under the Masters who resigned. They overtook the John Arthur School and renamed it the House of Thomas Adams, one of their still-living protest leaders. They also seized the Michael Kelvin School, renaming it the House of Alexander Norris, and the William Peck School, renaming it the House of James Randall.
On 19 September, the student protestors were joined by the former-miner town shopkeepers and the former-miners, both of whom held sympathy for the students and a common hatred toward the old Combrian system. The protestors that day stormed the John Cracker School and beat its Master to death; they would later rename this building the House of Karl Deering. In response, Kormell barricaded himself in his Office and refused calls to leave, and on 21 September, called in more reinforcements. This was countered with even more protestors, consisting of students and a growing number of allies. On 22 September, Kormell sent a ticker-text message to the Combrian government for a significant boost in money and resources to deal with this crisis, to which the government responded with a promise to do so.
Nevertheless, gridlock continued between both sides of the crisis, until 2 October, when Kormell was approached by George Cabot with a proposition to purchase the Institute as private property for a large sum of money. Kormell relented and signed a joint proposition with Cabot for approval from the Combrian government on this. The Combrian government approved the transaction, and, on 12 October, sent Kormell a letter granting him an honorable dismissal from the Headmaster position and a rewarding retirement.
George Cabot, on 13 October, transferred ownership of the Institute to Arnold Stone, who waived ownership to the Scholars. That day, they voted to rename the Institute to Cabotton University and also to rename Mack Schrader School as John Fleming House. On 2 November, the Cabotton University student body voted in a University Constitution, which mandated the University to be run democratically according to its administrative structure, as cited in a corresponding blog entry. And on 6 June 1232, Cabotton University began classes with its first Summer Semester.
Cabotton University would then begin its first official school year with a Fall Semester commencing on 2 September 1232.

BACKGROUND;
TW: death, parental loss, homelessness, murder, juvenile detention, prison. ● Nova was raised by a single mother, Rose Dodson, their father never in the picture as he had abandoned her the moment he found out she was pregnant. ● It became clear at a very young age that Nova was advanced and at only four, he took a Mensa test and was admitted as one of the groups youngest members with a score of 142. ● By age eight, Nova seemed entirely sure of who they were; they spoke to their mother about their identity and their future and Rose was nothing short of supportive, embracing her child and supporting them the way they always had. ● Unexpectedly, Nova's mother fell sick and passed away by the time he was twelve and they were placed with relatives. However, due to not knowing how to handle him, Nova was bounced around and eventually, ended up drifting between relatives homes, couch-surfing with friends or simply sleeping on the streets. ● At fifteen, after getting involved with the wrong people, a robbery Nova was a part of went wrong and he was charged with felony murder. They had never had a weapon or touched anyone, but due to their involvement with the original crime, they were charged as an adult and sentenced to seven and a half years in prison. ● Nova graduated high school on their own while in juvenile detention and even helped tutor and push other kids to do the same but once he reached eighteen and was transferred to an actual prison, something shifted within them and they gave up on themselves. ● A mentor from Mensa who had known Nova since he was a child refused to give up on him, visiting monthly and attempting to encourage him to continue fighting for the future he'd planned and when Nova was finally released, they used their connection as an alumni of Ogden to get Nova a spot despite their background. ● A sparks seems to have lightened back within Nova; he's brighter than he has been in the past four years, attending classes and excelling as they had been as a child but even they're not entirely sure what they want for their future or if their dream is any longer worth pursuing.

EXPAND ON HOW THEY EMBODY THEIR SKELETON TROPE;
While most of the life of a star is stable, as it burns through its fuel and begins to cool, the outward forces of pressure drop until it's low enough for gravity to take over and cause it's collapse — a supernova. It's chaotic, bright, powerful, beautiful. It's also essential to life, a source of elements including the very iron in your blood and in their wake, can leave either a black hole or a new star. Balance was taken from Nova a decade ago, forcing them to drop further and further downwards, a decline they had long since lost control of until gravity or fate intervened. What was becoming a shell of the luminary Nova had once been was thrown into chaos; a new world, a new environment and perhaps, a new start. Chaotic, bright, powerful, beautiful. It was essential to his survival, his life. The only question that remains, what will be left in their wake?
Tumblr media
RELATIONSHIP TO GREER;
Nova's relationships to Greer seems to exist more on a hypothetical than any reality. Their arrival was meant to be a new and exciting change, a return to the life they were meant to have, one that ended up all but cloaked by the darkness of Greer's missing status. It seemed to be everyone's focus and to some degree, Nova was thankful for it, his arrival able to slip mostly under the radar. After all, who held interest in your story when the school's golden girl had up and vanished?

Dedicated to Death: The End Experiment of Thomas Bradford
When the Fox sisters of Hydesville, New York claimed they contacted the spirit of a murdered peddler in 1848 the ears of the entire country listened. Suddenly there was hope that those who passed away were not truly gone and people from all over began to scramble to find ways to communicate with the dead. Later, with the horrors of the Civil War tearing the country and families apart people looked to Spiritualism and any way possible to find answers from beyond. Hundreds of thousands never came home, countless numbers were never found and the need for closure and communication drove people into the parlors and palms of people claiming they could be their much-needed bridge to the other side.  As many people that believed in life after death, there were just as many who refuted it and the divide grew. As time moved on the division deepened with both sides seeking the ultimate proof that death was, or was not, the end. It is an argument that is still actively debated to this day.
Prof. Thomas Lynn Bradford was a man of many ventures. A one-time electrical engineer, athlete, and actor, by 1920 he had begun studying and lecturing about the occult with a particular focus on the afterlife. The world had now suffered through World War I and people’s spirituality was again feeling highly tested. Bradford was a man of sound mind, but his headspace became more and more filled with his thoughts on life after death and how to prove it. He wrote “…all phenomena are outside the domain of the supernatural." He wanted to prove his theories using scientific fact, but he knew he could not do it alone.
Tumblr media
Professor Thomas Lynn Bradford.
In the early part of 1921 Bradford placed an ad in a local Detroit newspaper under the name “Professor Flynn” and stated that he was seeking “someone interested in spiritualistic science.” It was a strange ad, which was exactly why it caught the attention of prominent Detroit native Ruth Starkweather Doran. Doran was not a firm believer in Spiritualism. But, she was an avid researcher and was intrigued with the opportunity to learn about a field so unfamiliar to her. On a whim, she responded to the ad and before long she and Bradford began meeting face to face.
The experiment Bradford presented to Doran would have sent most people running, but for reasons unknown, she stuck with the plan. Before their last meeting on February 5th 1921 Bradford finished typing his latest manuscript and laid it neatly next to his typewriter. There was much to do and once Doran arrived the details were ironed out about how he would contact her when his half of the experiment was complete and how they would then reunite. The deal was made. They bid each other farewell and Bradford shut the door of his rented room. He knew he would not be disturbed, he already informed his landlord, a Mr. Marcotte, that if anyone were to call for him to tell them he was out and would not be back until very late. He turned on his heater. blew out the pilot light, turned up the gas, and laid down in bed until the fumes took his life.
The fact that Bradford killed himself in pursuit of answers about life after death may not have come as a shock to some of his friends. It was later reported that the occult interested him more than anything in the physical world. At one point he told Mr. Marcotte, “When I die my body goes to science. It is to be sent to the Michigan Medical Institute. Anyhow, my body does not amount to much.”
When Bradford’s body was discovered by Marcotte the next day the gas was still pouring from his heater. Upon investigation police found his typewriter, with one final note never removed, “And it is through scientific facts that I propose to demonstrate clearly the phenomena of spirits and prove that all the phenomena is outside the domain of super-natural.” Baffled by the suicide, the Detroit Police Department began to look for an explanation, and the dots quickly led to Doran who escaped any legal action by claiming they had met and discussed proving the afterlife but that she did not know he was planning to kill himself that night. Now, with his lifeless body laying in his home the first part of Bradford’s plan was complete. The second part relied on reconnecting with Doran to prove there was life after death. The self-proclaimed skeptic agreed to go through with it. “I am his friend.” Doran said, “If he can cause his spirit to come back to earth I believe his spirit will come to me first.”

In the days following Bradford’s suicide the eyes of the Spiritualism world were firmly fixed on Doran’s parlor where she was hosting multiple vigils waiting for her friend to reach out and make contact. Throughout the entire process though, Doran made it a point that she was not a psychic, saying that she was simply a human being there to serve as a middleman and prove Bradford’s theories. She and the intrigued masses patiently waited night after night for a connection, but the hours moved on quietly with Doran only stating at one point that she felt a “strange sensation”.
Doran and the spiritualists were not the only one wanting to hear from Bradford. Multiple newspapers waited eagerly for word, running headlines updating the masses with the New York Times reporting, “Dead Spiritualist Silent” two days after the suicide. It was a few days into a planned two week long vigil that there was finally something to report, but it was not from Doran. A woman named Lulu Mack came forward stating that during a visit with a medium she heard a voice calling the name “Thomas Bradford”, a name she claimed was totally unfamiliar to her at the time. She told reporters that Bradford could not communicate very well because his suicide made him weak, suspending him before he could fully pass on to the next realm. “Life has fled from the body of Thomas Lynn Bradford but his spirit is hovering near and calling to us to hear its message,” Mack reported. “I have heard the call of his spirit. It is calling to me even now. But I cannot hear the message it would send, because the spirit is too weak.”

Suddenly, a week after Bradford took his own life, Doran claimed she had a feeling she was going to hear from him, but it would be difficult considering how weak he was. Papers, thirsty for the next part of their bizarre story, urged spiritualists to concentrate on Bradford and “assist” him in reaching out. To make sure it was a focused effort it was agreed that 9pm was the time to take action and focus to help Bradford and Doran reconnect.
Much to the delight of some and criticism of others, at 9pm that night Doran sat in her darkened parlor with three witnesses. Suddenly, she put her hands to her temples, commanded the lights be turned off, and told someone to start writing. According to her, Bradford had finally arrived. “I hear his voice” she said to the room, “It is faint, but it grows more distinct. It is the professor.”
As Doran spoke in broken fragments the alleged message from Bradford was slowly pieced together:
“I am the professor who speaks to you from the Beyond. I have broken through the veil. The help of the living has greatly assisted me. I simply went to sleep. I woke up and at first did not realize that I had passed on. I find no great change apparent. I expected things to be much different. They are not. Human forms are retained in outline but not in the physical. I have not traveled far. I am still much in the darkness. I see many people. They appear natural. There is a lightness of responsibility here unlike in life. One feels full of rapture and happiness. Persons of like natures associate. I am associated with other investigators. I do not repent my act. My present plane is but the first series. I am still investigating the future planes regarding which we in this plane are as ignorant as are earthly beings of the life just beyond human life.”
At 10pm the lights were brought back on and a flustered Doran looked over the bits and pieces that she claimed were given to her directly from the spirit of Bradford. Then, she suddenly fainted. Once resuscitated one of the witnesses asked her if she was positive about her message, was she absolutely sure she was speaking with Bradford from beyond the grave? She was adamant, “I am convinced. I never heard a spirit voice before. That was the professor, without doubt."

For all of the speculation and attention leading up to Doran waiting to hear from Bradford, the aftermath was remarkably tame. Despite the accounts from both Doran and Mack, members of both the Spiritualism community and the general public were not convinced that the alleged message from Bradford was proof of anything. The headlines faded into obscurity and Doran went along with them. Later in the year Doran wrote an article claiming that she maintained regular communication with her departed friend ever since. She was now a believer, still receiving messages from Bradford detailing how one day both realms would meet.
“Through spiritualism the world will be reclaimed: sin will be vanquished, suffering will end” she claimed he told her. “The physical in man will cease to be, and physical death, and that is the only death, will be no more. Men will live on earth forever, even as they live forever in the spirit world.”
At the time of his death Bradford was near penniless. His estranged wife living in Wisconsin only learned of his death later and his body was claimed by a brother, James Bradford, who handed it over to an undertaker for interment.
The body of Professor Thomas Lynn Bradford, the man who gave up his life to prove life after death, is buried in the Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Detroit, Michigan.

“Beware of The Blob; it creeps; and leaps and glides and slides; across the floor; right through the door; and all around the wall; a splotch, a blotch; be careful of The Blob. *pop…pop…pop* Beware of The Blob!” Actually, these lyrics could be the film’s synopsis. Join this episode’s Grue-Crew – Whitney Collazo, Chad Hunt, Daphne Monary-Ernsdorff, and Jeff Mohr – as they discuss the film that spawned what The Black Saint called the scariest creature ever, The Blob (1958).

The Blob is Whitney’s choice. It was recommended to her by her great grandmother after she had enjoyed “Flubber” (The Absent-Minded Professor, 1961) as a youngster. As misplaced as that comparison was, she was glued to this movie as a kid with the theater scene, in particular, sticking with her. Now she sees The Blob as a silly and fun classic with a really different kind of creature.
Chad also calls The Blob a classic with a very different kind of monster. Even though Steve McQueen looks nothing like a teenager, he loves this fun flick. A relative, this time an auntie, also turned Daphne on to The Blob and she’s thankful for her introduction to this cool part of B-movie history. She also points out some of the film’s legacy as she is reminded of later movies in the old-man-and-the-dog scene in Killer Klowns from Outer Space (1988) and “The Lonesome Death of Jordy Verrill” segment in Creep Show (1982). All of the scenes with the blob scared the crap out of Jeff as a child and have always stuck with him. Now he notices the abundance of exposition but still has a great time watching The Blob, a movie he sees as Rebel Without a Cause (1955) combined with a very unique SF creature feature.
Suffice it to say, The Blob never gets old for the Classic Era Grue-Crew. If you feel the same way about this classic, at the time of this writing, The Blob is available to stream on HBOmax, The Criterion Channel, Crackle w/ads, and Plex w/ads. In terms of physical media, it is still available as a Blu-ray from Criterion.

I have now finished the (abridged) audiobook of The First Man In Rome. It's a tragedy it's abridged and also that DOS did not narrate The Grass Crown because now I'm emotionally attached to the worst man in Rome, Lucius Cornelius "Look, Babygirl" Sulla.
Great for fans of (fictionalised) Roman history and hearing David Ogden Stiers say the word babygirl and talk about Ancient Roman gay porn.

Beginning: Deborah and Thomas Mack
Mother:
Never trust a drop-out? That's not a very nice thing to say.
If you know who Ivella is, then you should know her relationship to a very important person: Merlin Kent Ogden, practically a legend here in Gentry County. I know that he passed on some years ago. But didn't you know him when you, yourself, lived in Cabotton?
In any case, Ivella means well, even though she no longer attends. The reason she left was because though she is intelligent and well-disciplined, the curriculum at the University simply was not a fit for her. Nonetheless, she is intelligent and well-disciplined. She has sense in how to work with people. And she is quite dedicated to her craft. She, Glenda, and the two others have been running their TableQuest session for quite some time now, even before I started at the University. And they earned quite the reputable business in the process.
I would like to further point out that even though she is a drop-out, she is actually still on good terms with the University Headmaster. So I am in less danger than you think.
Nevertheless, if you're that concerned for me, mark my words: If I sense any sort of trouble or treachery, or any sort of darkfire practice at work, in even the slightest, I will withdraw, and I will protect myself. In fact, I know a very stout vigilante named Mervin Lorens, who will certainly guarantee my safety if need be.
In any case, it is late now, so I am turning in for the night.
Best Regards,
Tom

Will Ravens’ Ronnie Stanley become the NFL’s highest-paid non-QB? – Baltimore Ravens Blog
Last year at this time, the question surrounding Baltimore Ravens left tackle Ronnie Stanley was whether he would make his first Pro Bowl.
Now it’s legitimate to ask whether Stanley is going to get paid like no other non-quarterback in the NFL.
Stanley’s ascension to the top of his position comes as he enters the final year of his rookie contract and an enviable situation. The left tackle market suddenly became inflated while lacking a core of young and established blockers.
In addressing his contract situation this past week, Stanley said, “I definitely want to get paid my value and what I’m worth.”
Given that he’s a first-team All-Pro, Stanley is expected to surpass Houston’s Laremy Tunsil, who escalated the value for left tackles in April by signing a three-year contract that averages $22 million per season.
• Stefanski’s early impression on Browns • How A.J. Brown can avoid soph slump • Steelers’ D vs. division’s three Heisman QBs • How Hyde fits in Seahawks’ backfield • Inside Broncos’ biggest positional overhauls
Coming off one of the best seasons by a left tackle in recent memory, Stanley could move past Chicago pass-rusher Khalil Mack ($23.5 million per season) and Los Angeles Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald ($22.5 million) to become the richest non-QB in the league.
In protecting the blind side of NFL MVP Lamar Jackson, Stanley allowed six pressures, the fewest by an offensive tackle in 14 years. He was named Pro Football Focus’ Pass Blocker of the Year.
In opening holes for the NFL’s all-time single-season rushing attack, Stanley helped Baltimore average 7.2 yards per rush on the left side. In the past 15 years, only the 2018 Carolina Panthers gained more yards per carry on the left side (7.4).
Stanley has been the most effective left tackle in the game, and the metrics prove it. Laremy Tunsil’s new contract upped the bar for Stanley’s asking price. Tommy Gilligan-USA TODAY Sports
Detractors will say no left tackle is worth that money (over half of the NFL’s starting quarterbacks are making less than $22 million per season) and that Stanley’s numbers are more reflective of how teams are reluctant to full-out blitz Jackson. Others feel the Ravens can’t spend on Stanley when three Pro Bowl players (cornerback Marlon Humphrey, tight end Mark Andrews and offensive tackle Orlando Brown Jr.) are scheduled to become free agents after the 2021 season and Jackson will likely be seeking a record-setting deal around that time.
Baltimore can keep Stanley at what amounts to be a bargain price for the next two years. Stanley is making $12.86 million in his fifth-year option this season, and he could receive the franchise tag at around $15 million in 2021.
Ultimately, the Ravens will have to make the tough decision: Give Stanley the biggest average-per-year deal in franchise history or search for his replacement.
Baltimore understands the challenge of finding a long-term answer at left tackle. After Hall of Fame offensive lineman Jonathan Ogden retired in 2007, the Ravens went through seven starting left tackles in eight years: Jared Gaither, Adam Terry, Michael Oher, Bryant McKinnie, Eugene Monroe, James Hurst and Kelechi Osemele.
It wasn’t until the Ravens used the No. 6 overall pick in the 2016 draft on Stanley did they stop the turnstile. He was solid in his first three seasons before his breakout year in 2019, which moved him to the top of a position that lacks a lot of star power.
The days of Ogden, Walter Jones and Joe Thomas are gone. The current top protectors of the blind side are Stanley and Green Bay’s David Bakhtiari.
Dallas’ Tyron Smith and New Orleans’ Terron Armstead can’t stay on the field. San Francisco’s Trent Williams hasn’t played a game since 2018. Indianapolis’ Anthony Castonzo turns 32 before the season.
By protecting the blind side of the reigning league MVP, Stanley has built a rep as a shutdown blocker — he allowed zero sacks in 2019 and was flagged just four times. Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images
Tunsil became the highest-paid left tackle because of leverage. The Texans traded two first-round picks and a second-rounder to the Miami Dolphins for Tunsil, and they couldn’t afford to let him walk.
So Tunsil received $4 million more per season than any other offensive tackle in NFL history. How much more will it jump with Stanley?
Last season, Tunsil allowed three sacks and committed a league-high 17 penalties, including 14 false starts. Stanley didn’t give up a sack and was flagged just four times.
To keep Stanley, it certainly looks like the Ravens will have to give him a contract that exceeds the $22 million-per-year deal signed by quarterback Joe Flacco in 2016.
If anyone needed a reminder about how much teams covet offensive tackles, five were taken in the first round in this year’s draft. The Browns, Jets and Dolphins all selected tackles in hopes of protecting young franchise quarterbacks.
The Ravens know the price it’ll take to keep Stanley shielding pass-rushers from Jackson. It’s just unknown whether they’re willing to pay it.

Add your own related questions if you want!
Include the rules just in case!
Have fun choosing :)
Cast/Characters:
Paige O’ Hara’s Belle or Emma Watson’s Belle
Emma’s Belle because....she’s kind of a beast, tbh. She’s sharp and suspicious and prickly from her lifetime of being left out of things; she only softens as she finds her home at the palace. Her singing is a bit naff, but Emma’s Belle is far more interesting, and brings more complexity to the romance. (still say gugu should have got this part though)
Robby Benson’s Beast or Dan Stevens’ Beast
Dan did a superb job.
Richard White’s Gaston or Luke Evans’ Gaston
Is Luke Evans as big as a barge?! Is he now?! Go back to middle-earth, ya wimp
Jesse Corti’s LeFou or Josh Gad’s LeFou
omg is this even a contest
Rex Everhart’s Maurice or Kevin Kline’s Maurice
KEVIN KLINE I LOVE YOU AND EVERYTHING YOU DO please love me back
Jerry Orbach’s Lumiere or Ewan McGregor’s Lumiere
I love Jerry Orbach’s Lumiere so much. So. Much. it’s not even a contest, really
David Ogden Stiers’ Cogsworth or Ian McKellen’s Cogsworth
this one’s hard!! David Ogden Stiers because his line readings are amazing, but it’s sooo close
Angela Lansbury’s Mrs. Potts AND Emma Thompson’s Mrs. Potts
it’s DIFFICULT again!! I CAN’T. they’re both great. don’t make me choose between my two moms
Bradley Pierce’s Chip or Nathan Mack’s Chip
tbh they’re both kinda annoying/creepy, at least in cup form. i dunno it’s both or none so let’s go none
Kimmy Robertson’s Babette or Gugu Mbatha-Raw’s Plumette
PLUMEEEEEEEEEEEEETTE
Jo Anne Worley’s Wardrobe or Audra McDonald’s Madame de Garderobe
(oh how divine)
Songs & Scenes:
Human Again or Days In The Sun
days in the sun makes me cry, ok
1991 Gaston or 2017 Gaston
(though I miss the old lyrics)
Lumiere letting Maurice into the castle or Maurice being terrified by Chip
‘monsieur, you are welcome here!’
Beast giving Belle the library as a gift or Beast giving Belle the library because Romeo & Juliet sucks
1991 Castle vs. Villagers or 2017 Castle vs. Villagers
Wait no I've thought about this but I'm on my phone now so I can't fix it. But basically I changed my mind and prefer the 1991 one (but barely)

Include the rules just in case!

Cast/Characters:
Paige O’ Hara’s Belle or Emma Watson’s Belle
Heck first one in I’m already stuck but I’m gonna say this cause while I enjoyed the new things in the new Belle I have issues with Emma Watson and we’re gonna leave it as that so it’s not a rant
Robby Benson’s Beast or Dan Stevens’ Beast
I’m going with this purely for the line ‘I had an expensive education’ because I live for that do you understand how long I’ve been mad at the idea that the beast can’t read when fuck that nobel children got taught to read like 4 languages including latin I was so pleased I feel like this line is a throwback to that which fixes it also he hates people over romanticing Romeo and Juliet
Richard White’s Gaston or Luke Evans’ Gaston
*Makes iffy hand gestures and a non commited sound
Jesse Corti’s LeFou or Josh Gad’s LeFou
Can I choose neither? I wanna choose neither cause Jesse Corti’s didn’t add much of anthing while I have Huge Issues with Josh Gad’s also but at least he had a bigger role but yeah I have problems
Rex Everhart’s Maurice or Kevin Kline’s Maurice
Both are good? But the man had me at his music box so …
Jerry Orbach’s Lumiere or Ewan McGregor’s Lumiere
While Jerry is a darling I really enjoyed the newer Lumiere purely because he’s less sexual creep and more hopelessly in love with his girlfriend, I dunno I feel like I’ve probably known some men like Jerry’s Lumiere and it’s not fun, he seems women obsessed and Ewan is adorable
David Ogden Stiers’ Cogsworth or Ian McKellen’s Cogsworth
Heck heck heck I wanna say David because he was really funny and I love him but Ian and Ian should win everytime purely for my love for him help HHHHMMMMM
Angela Lansbury’s Mrs. Potts AND Emma Thompson’s Mrs. Potts
Emma was so good but Angela is like such an icon from my childhood she’s wonderful I love her
Bradley Pierce’s Chip or Nathan Mack’s Chip
I like both of them and can’t think of how either differs really? Maybe Nathan’s Chip is a few years older? Ehhhhhh
Babette or Gugu Mbatha-Raw’s Plumette
Shut that noise this aint even a competion gimme my lady
Jo Anne Worley’s Wardrobe or Audra McDonald’s Madame de Garderobe
The orignal Wardrobe was so annoying? Is that just me? gimme my beautiful songstress
Songs & Scenes:
Human Again or Days In The Sun
OOhhh right so when I first saw the new film I was really hoping to see Human Again at last offically in but because of how the curse is changed (100% worse, fuck that witch tell her to meet me in the pit I’ll take her down) and how the servants are outright doomed rather than considerably inconvenienced they have a completely different feel, and I think at least very realistic, they want to be free again, they honestly don’t want to die or for their loved ones to die but they have to face reality and they know breaking the curse is unlikely, they will do what they can to stop it and save themselves but the odds are they cannot be saved and at some level they’ve all accepted it, Human Again would never fit into this, and Days in the Sun is mourning what they’ve lost
1991 Gaston or 2017 Gaston
Ya
Lumiere letting Maurice into the castle or Maurice being terrified by Chip
*Shrugs* That stink eye Lumiere gives Cogsworth when he tries to silence him and then how he burns him its great
Beast giving Belle the library as a gift or Beast giving Belle the library because Romeo & Juliet sucks
While the orginal Beast was so cute when he wanted to suprise Belle with the library I deeply feel new Beast’s level of ‘Fuck you and your shite taste in books heres better’ right in my soul
1991 Castle vs. Villagers or 2017 Castle vs. Villagers
Go git em darlin’ Cadenza
People I’m Tagging:
Nah Son
