Machu Picchu: A Day Trip to Remember 🇵🇪 🤓 Ever wondered how people reach the fabled landmark of Machu Picchu? You don’t have to trek for days to reach it (though that *is* one rad option). I took an unforgettable *day trip* last fall. Details below! 💫 🚞 I traveled on a bimodal tour with Peru Rail, which included a bus ride between Cusco and the quaint town of Ollantaytambo, then a scenic train journey through the Sacred Valley. The Vistadome class was definitely worth the higher ticket price, with of rushing rivers, Quechua ruins, lush forests, and exotic wildlife visible through both the side *and* ceiling windows. 🌿 Once we arrived at Machupicchu Pueblo, my small group was greeted by an amazing local guide who led us on a knowledge-packed tour of the ancient citadel. 📜 I was amazed to learn that this iconic site was built around 1450—and is still 70% intact! 🥹 It was a legitimately humbling experience to walk through the ancient temples, agricultural zones, and protective walls that once housed an estimated 500 people. The history, lore, and surroundings left me in awe. If you're ever in Cusco, I highly recommend taking *at least* a day trip to this iconic landmark. It's an adventure you'll never forget! 🙌

Well, Friday, so I decided na mag-milktea.
Sabay nagpaalam umalis.
Pwede.
Napatingin ako sa tarpaulin ng isang pulitikong trapo na ang tsismis ay maraming patung-patong ng charges ng korapsyon.
Eww, nevermind!

Machu Picchu Adventure: The Citadel
My day started with a lukewarm shower, despite being on the hottest setting. I then went down for breakfast with the Filipino ladies, the coffee was quite good and I enjoyed yet another ham and cheese sandwich although this bread was much nicer and soft. It seems like this will be the staple breakfast now! We all checked out and then met our guide Joel in the lobby when he came to collect us and walk us down to the main square to collect a couple of others - some Chinese ladies, and a family with a two year old son. I was trying to figure out if they were Kiwis, Australian or South African by their accent. Once I heard them speaking Afrikaans my answer was confirmed. I chatted with them a bit as they were really friendly - they were from Hermanus near Cape Town and were surprised that I knew it for the whale watching. The bus journey was next so we lined up with our tickets and hopped on. I made the mistake of sitting near the back so with the super windy, super steep switchbacks it gave me some major motion sickness but the views were breathtaking over the mountains and valleys at well over 3,000m. Our initial ascent inside Machu Picchu was steep but it was cool in the morning so conditions were ideal for climbing, although there was some light rain which made it a little slippery. Joel took us to the main viewpoint/photo spot for our route although the entire citadel below was covered with fog. While we waited for it to clear away for our photos he explained how Machu Picchu was discovered only in 1911, it had been hidden away by vegetation for over 400 years and was only known by local farmers. The name means “old mountain” in the local Quechua language but no one knows the reason behind it. The Incas had created a water irrigation system that would supply their citadel with 45 litres per minute and used two different styles of construction for their buildings; a basic rock and clay combination for quick and unimportant structures like houses, and then much more detailed sculptured interlocking rocks for structures of high importance like the altar, temple, and a circular building in the centre of the citadel which had two windows. This building was used for telling exactly when the winter and summer solstices were to direct the farmers in planting and harvesting their crops with the coming seasons. The fog cleared away and we were in the perfect spot for photos in front of the citadel so Joel played photographer for about half an hour having us go one by one to pose. We continued down from the viewpoint to the citadel and walked among the ancient ruins. Joel showed us some of their plants like a passion fruit tree and a coca bush that the Incas had tried to grow at a higher elevation than it usually ever would. It started to heat up a lot once the sun was fully out and we were fighting over the little slivers of shade from the walls at each place we stopped. With the tour successfully finished, and our two hours inside Machu Picchu now up it was time to make our way down the 1000m descent.

Huayna Picchu: The Stairs of Death (ticketmachupicchu.com)
If you can get one of the 400 daily entrance tickets to the Huayna Picchu mountain, you will have the opportunity to visit the ‘stairs of death’. These steps offer intimidating views. And, despite its name, no one has died on these famous stairs.
What is the Huayna Picchu mountain?
What are the stairs of the death of Huayna Picchu?
How is the tour of Huayna Picchu and the stairs of death?
The rise
The descent
How many people have died on the stairs of death?
Other adrenaline alternatives in Machu Picchu
Other scary stairs in the world
How to visit the stairs of the death of Huayna Picchu?
The climb up the Huayna Picchu mountain is considered one of the best short walks on the planet. Some tourists consider that visiting Machu Picchu without ascending the Waynapicchu is like not having gone.
What is the Huayna Picchu mountain?
The Huayna Picchu mountain is the summit located north of the Inca City.
It is 2,720 meters above sea level (8,923 ft.)
This mountain is famous for its staircases on the edge of cliffs. The most popular and difficult section are ‘the stairs of death’.
In addition, a mysterious Inca construction called the Temple of the Moon is located on the Huayna Picchu mountain.
Dizzying stairs in Huayna Picchu
What are the stairs of the death of Huayna Picchu?
The ‘Stairs of death’ are a section of stone steps built by the Incas, which lead to the top of Huayna Picchu.
These stairs are characterized by being steep and difficult to climb. In addition, the stairs are on the edge of cliff views. However, despite its name, no tourist lost his life there.
After ascending this section, you reach the top of the Huayna Picchu mountain.
How is the tour of Huayna Picchu and the stairs of death?
During the tour of the Huayna Picchu mountain, the tourist must use both hands to hold the wall.
Tourists will face 183 meters of rock steps, which were sculpted more than 500 years ago.
During the ascent by these stairs, the visitor will find a damp wall and, on the other hand, a fall of hundreds of meters towards the Urubamba River.
The rise
The climb up these stairs requires considerable physical effort.
The stairs have an approximate slope of 60 degrees.
Tourists must ascend step by step. This is the most difficult section during the ascent to the top of Huayna Picchu.
The descent
If there is something worse than climbing the ‘Stairs of Death’, that is going down them.
The way back is intimidating due to the slopes on the edge of cliffs.
Tourists must descend step by step. Many times you must let the ascending tourists pass.
Descending the ‘Stairs of Death’ is a very difficult time for visitors who fear heights.
How many people have died on the stairs of death?
The stairs of death are surrounded by myths. Among the things that are said, it is said that it is very dangerous to ascend these steps. However, that is false. Actually, people of all ages climb the Huayna Picchu daily.
To date there are no known deaths of people because of a fall in ‘The stairs of death’.
Other adrenaline alternatives in Machu Picchu
The mountain Machu Picchu – This summit is the other alternative of hiking in Machu Picchu. It is a 2 kilometer walk to the top of the mountain that gave the name to the Inca City.
The Intipunku (Puerta del Sol) – This construction is located in the old entrance gate to Machu Picchu used by the Incas. It is a 2 kilometer walk along stone stairs in the archaeological site.
The Inca Bridge – This walk leads to the east side of Machu Picchu, where an ancient bridge used by the Incas is located. The walk lasts only 30 minutes and crosses paths along cliffs.

Other scary stairs in the world

Iconic Historical Monuments Around the World: A Traveler's Guide
Travel is often about exploration, discovery, and connection to places that shape our understanding of history. Among the many attractions that beckon travelers, iconic historical monuments stand out as timeless symbols of human achievement. These structures, each with its unique story, reflect the creativity, resilience, and cultural richness of the societies that built them. This guide will take you on a journey through some of the world's most celebrated historical monuments, offering insights into their significance and practical tips for visiting.
The Great Wall of China: A Marvel of Ancient Engineering
Stretching over 13,000 miles across northern China, the Great Wall is a monumental feat of engineering and a symbol of national pride. Originally built to protect Chinese states from invasions, the wall was constructed over several dynasties, with the most famous sections being built during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). Its serpentine form through varied landscapes showcases the determination of the Chinese people to defend their land.
Visiting Tips: To fully appreciate the wall, visit less touristy sections like Jinshanling or Simatai. These areas offer stunning views and a chance to walk along well-preserved stretches. Early morning visits are ideal to avoid crowds and enjoy cooler temperatures. Be prepared for some hiking; sturdy shoes are a must!
The Pyramids of Giza: Guardians of Ancient Egypt
The Pyramids of Giza, particularly the Great Pyramid of Khufu, are perhaps the most enduring symbols of ancient Egypt. Built around 2580–2560 BC, these monumental tombs were designed to honor pharaohs and ensure their passage into the afterlife. The precision and scale of the construction remain a subject of fascination and admiration, attracting millions of visitors each year.
Visiting Tips: To enhance your experience, consider hiring a knowledgeable guide who can share insights into the history and mysteries of the pyramids. Arriving early is crucial in avoiding crowds and the midday heat. Don't miss the nearby Sphinx, which adds to the mystical allure of the site.
Machu Picchu: The Incan Gem in the Andes
High in the Peruvian Andes lies Machu Picchu, a breathtaking Incan citadel dating back to the 15th century. Often referred to as the "Lost City of the Incas," Machu Picchu was abandoned during the Spanish conquest and remained hidden until Hiram Bingham rediscovered it in 1911. The site features impressive stone structures and terraced agricultural fields, revealing the advanced engineering skills of the Inca civilization.
Visiting Tips: Many travelers choose to hike the Inca Trail to reach Machu Picchu, a multi-day trek that offers stunning vistas along the way. For those with limited time, a scenic train ride from Cusco to Aguas Calientes is a convenient alternative. Regardless of your route, book tickets in advance to secure your spot at this UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Colosseum: Rome's Ancient Arena
The Colosseum stands as a testament to the grandeur of the Roman Empire. Completed in AD 80, this colossal amphitheater was used for gladiatorial contests, public spectacles, and more. With a capacity of up to 80,000 spectators, it remains one of the most iconic symbols of Rome's architectural and cultural legacy.
Visiting Tips: To truly appreciate the Colosseum, consider joining a guided tour that provides in-depth knowledge of its history and architecture. Aim for a visit in the early morning or late afternoon to avoid peak tourist hours. Remember to explore the surrounding Roman Forum and Palatine Hill, which are rich in history and equally impressive.
The Taj Mahal: A Testament to Love
The Taj Mahal, an exquisite white marble mausoleum located in Agra, India, was commissioned by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal. Completed in 1653, it is renowned for its stunning architecture, intricate inlay work, and beautifully landscaped gardens. The Taj Mahal is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a symbol of eternal love.
Visiting Tips: For an unforgettable experience, visit the Taj Mahal at sunrise or sunset when the light creates a magical ambiance. Exploring the surrounding gardens is equally rewarding. Remember to dress modestly, as this is a place of reverence, and be prepared for security checks before entering.
Petra: The Rose-Red City
Petra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in Jordan, is famous for its rock-cut architecture and water conduit system. Established as a trading hub by the Nabataeans in the 4th century BC, Petra features impressive structures, including the stunning Al-Khazneh (The Treasury). The city, carved into rose-red cliffs, is a remarkable testament to ancient engineering and artistry.
Visiting Tips: Prepare for a day of walking, as Petra spans a vast area filled with stunning sites. Wear comfortable shoes and consider hiring a local guide to enhance your understanding of the site's rich history. A visit to Petra by Night, where thousands of candles illuminate the path, offers a unique and enchanting experience.
Visiting iconic historical monuments is more than just sightseeing; it's an opportunity to connect with the past and appreciate the diverse cultures that have shaped our world. Each monument, whether the Great Wall of China or the Taj Mahal, has a story to tell and a legacy to share. As you embark on your travel adventures, take the time to explore these remarkable sites and immerse yourself in the history they embody. Your journey through these monumental wonders will not only enrich your understanding of our shared heritage but also inspire a deeper appreciation for the beauty of our world. Happy travels!
