Flamains are an alien specie of fire people from a planet called Bellus. They possess lots of fire related abilities and I'm gonna go into details about them.

Their physical appearance

Flamains have multiple forms. A fireball one, not used much because of how inefficient and small it is. A human one, the most used one, helps them to blend in on earth. And a mix of both, where it's kind of just the human form on fire. Helps in fights and may happen when under strong emotions.

Flamains also have ''unnatural'' hair colors. Normally, their hair can have natural colors (brown, blond, etc...) but once they use their powers, their roots will start to grow hair with a different hair color that may be : red, green, blue, yellow, orange, purple, and on very rare cases the hair becomes white and red, meaning the flamain with this hair color is very powerful.

Their eyes and fire also match the color of their hair. So if a flamain has blue eyes, their fire and hair will also be blue. And flamains with red and white hair will have red eyes and fire.

And since the fire flows in their blood, their blood will take the color of their respective fire. So some flamains might have a warm red skin tone, and some flamains a pale, blue skin tone.

Their powers

As said before, flamains have fire powers, meaning they can create fire whenever they want using the air around them, all thanks to the magic inside their body. Yes, magic is a big part of their existence, as without the magic flowing in their fire-y blood, they wouldn't live.

Their body being mainly fire means they dont feel cold when it's cold, or hot when it's hot, Which means they also do not have the ability to sweat to cool off. And they also do not need to drink. Drinking won't kill them, but it just isn't necessary for them to live.

Flamains also live for way longer than humans. The more they age, the longer their body age. Which means an old flamain is REALLY old.

''What would happen if a flamain and a human had a kid''

A flamain-human hybrid would physically look like the human version of a flamain. They would also acquire the fire capacities of a flamain, but to a less powerful level. They wouldn't be able to turn into the other forms of a flamain. And due to less magic in their body there's chance that they would just be a weaker individual in general (Humans don't have magic in them). They would also have the aging process of a flamain, since flamain genes are still pretty dominant.

Royal army (von kaiser x king hippo) is definitely up there as my favorite PO ship. I love how it started out as a crackship from a joke in animal crossing but then just delved into Whatever the fuck w/ maber KJDHKSJF.

But seriously though !! they just Work somehow... like you have both of them having royal names (albeit i hc hippos is an actual title he carries, and kaisers more of a stage name bc of his interest in royal n military history). Plus, I think kaiser would b very interested in learning more ab hippos culture n hippo would b happy to indulge him. It's what elevates Kaiser from ''just another peasant'' to Hippo as someone who he's willing to talk to! Not many people take his title seriously as hippo island's fairly unknown outside of the south pacific hes from, so when they first meet, Kaiser's a huge breath of fresh air to him.

Seeing as Kaiser is a polyglot as well in my HC, I like to think he was one of the few people in the WVBA who had prior knowledge of Hippo Island and it's language. Although Kaiser can only speak a couple basic sentences and struggles with the pronounciation, Hippo still appreciates the effort. In turn, Kaiser has also taught Hippo some German, the language being easier to Hippo due to the sounds made.

ALSO imagine the hippo island kids n kaiser's academy kids going on some type of exchange w/ one another !! theyd have the time of their lives !! The kids would totally get into an argument over who's cooler too.

They're a lot like opposites attracting as well. Hippo, although he is responsible to his people, is generally a lot more easygoing n defo helps kaiser let loose a bit more like how he did in his 20s (berliner party days baybe !!!) But Hippo learns a lot from Kaiser too ! he really admires his work ethic, and loves how much of a leader n fatherly he is to the kids he teaches. He admires his resilience as well, both having confided much into eachother. His resilicience almost like a... MACHINE?!? Either way, both have positions in which they lead in some way, and theyve both taught eachother a lot.

Also they bond over dead mother figures (hippos who died of illness, and kaiser's who went missing when he was very young.)

As for how they'd butt heads, would be kaisers endless need to seek approval due to his dad being emotionally constipated, and hippos occasional emotional outbursts (poor emotional regulation). also hippos friendly teasing (how he shows affection, aside from physical contact) sometimes strikes a nerve w/ kaiser, esp if it's about his age or career.

One time, after a particularly exhausting match, kaiser just fell asleep on hippos lap as the latter was holding him. Aran walked by in disbelief, w/ hippo going ''heh, jealous? ;)'' w/ aran going ''Nah, not at all''

One last thing.... hippo sees kaiser as a kitten (thank you maber for that idea i am obsessed); kaiser's height n physique r significantly smaller than hippo's, leading to hippo often times patting him on the head n even picking him up like he weighs nothing. Kaiser secretly rly likes it, but he won't tell him directly because yknow... hes got a rep to protect.

Ok so maybe I invented a gravity falls au.

Long story short, my brain said “Dipple and Maber” instead of the niblings and, while I’m not going to name them that because that’s stupid, I started wondering what would happen if I shuffled things around. Also, I don’t know what to do with Fiddleford so if anyone has ideas, let me hear them please.

This is swap!gravity falls. Including my art, which is mid (except dipper that’s a good dipper)

TLDR main swaps are Dipper/Mabel, Ford/Stan, and Wendy/Soos

Dipper = sweater vests, braces, fashion, confidence, unicorns

Mabel = collared jacket, hat, nerves, brains, science

Soos = lesbian badass with a motorcycle and lots of knives. She’s just here cause it’s a decent job, and she only steps in when needed, but she is very protective of the kids.

Wendell = Dedicated & loyal teen who always does his best but he’s a little stupid. Also he has daddy issues. Crush-crazy bi dipper falls in love with Wendell. Wendell’s teen group is the outcasts, but in a very nerdy losery way. This includes Robin the band geek, Timmy the programmer, Kate and Bee the chess players, and Tabitha who could probably be cool and popular if she wanted.

Candy & Grenda = swapped, so little skinny candy does martial arts and big loud Grenda is a gaming streamer with glasses.

Ford got kicked out of home for being a freak, Stan dropped out of college, Ford fought his way through college with loans and scholarships and has a couple PHDs. Ford came to Stan’s tourist trap 30 years ago (which Bill helped build) to talk to him, Stan let him set up a lab in the basement, went down there after being manipulated by Bill and freaked at how big it was, fight, Stan turned on the portal and ended up falling in, now Ford has to run the shack and try to stabilize the portal so it can open a double-sided gateway for Stan to come back, also he convinced everyone that wym ‘Stanley’ it was always ‘Stanford’ and actually now he’d rather go by his full name or just ‘Ford’ thanks.

Ford = Grunkle 1, loves them kids, enthusiastic, uses mystery shack for money, curious, bullheaded, feels super fuckin bad about what happened, tries not to cuss in front of the kids but isn’t a very aware guy

Stan = Grunkle 2, immediately falls in love with the kids, very creative, fighter, a bit scared of being emasculated tbh, nemesis with Bill, total sailor’s mouth

Bill = what if Bill’s the same except he’s a fucking square? You fucking square.

Waddles is a cute lil round goat that Dipper fell in love with and stole, and there’s also a big silly pig named Gompers around

The kids have a lot more fun toys from the start because Grunkle Ford isn’t gonna tell them about the portal, but if his kids want magnet guns, they’re gonna get magnet guns.

Stanley wrote the journals, they’re just accounts of the weird shit he’s run into over time in Gravity Falls. Ford is using #3 to try to derive scientific information about the anomalous nature of the place, but Stan is so Not A Scientist ™ that it’s hard. Mabel finds journal #1 and it’s full of hastily drawn pictures and warnings like, instead of a scientific name and approximate diagrams, it’s “what the fuck is this??” and “fuckin huge!” And Mabel is adding more scientific/helpful labels, Like the gnomes (all girls) are in there as “annoying little shits” “punt them” “if there’s too many to punt, hide.” To which Mabel adds “LEAF BLOWER - VERY EFFECTIVE” and “CAN STACK TO BECOME LARGE CREATURE”

Ford is too chaotic for a journal so he just has stacks of binders full of BS. And again, he doesn’t tell the kids about the lab downstairs or the portal or anything, but he’s 100% willing to give them stuff, and he’s become a chronic liar over time in order to run the mystery shack, signing legal papers and taxes as Stanley but having people call him Stanford.

Anyways, the portal incident happens as normal, and when Stan comes out of the portal he absolutely punches his brother, but the response is “Okay, I might deserve that, but so do you” “Fair enough.” And a reciprocal punch. “So does anyone else know about your secret lab situation?” “Oh, just… the entire US government?” “WHAT?!” And suddenly Stan is the doer and Ford takes a backseat like they did as kids, when Stan would make all the friends for them and beat up the bullies and Ford would do his homework.

The “Billpocalypse,” as Stan so aptly named it, occurs when Mabel starts getting a lot of attention from both Grunkles for being smart and creative and Dipper gets upset and runs off, then gets tricked on promise of being “smarter.” Stan, as always, stands up to Bill and has problems for it, and when the bubble around the town gets discovered, claims that he knows what’s causing it and how to destroy it, not wanting real-scientist Ford to get captured or anything. Dipland is full of candy and unicorns and everyone is equally smart, and Mabel breaks him out by explaining that her intelligence would be useless without his creativity, confidence, and enthusiasm, and the world needs him to save it. The Bill solution is the same, Stan has a metal plate implanted in his head and can’t let Bill in cause he’d discover that Stan was lying, so they swap and Ford gets his mind erased… for like a week, then he’s fine. Show ends with the grunkles going on the road trip of their dreams together in an RV they tricked out.

Revaloriser le genre de la science-fiction, le défi de Jim Soddard

En 2020 Penguin Books lance une nouvelle collection nommée Penguin Classics Sci-fi, cette collection dont la direction artistique est confiée à Jim Soddard présente vingt et un titres de classiques de la littérature internationale de science-fiction. La maison britannique a pour but grâce à cette collection de revaloriser le genre de la science-fiction et de rendre ces classiques accessibles à un large public.

La stratégie utilisée par Jim Sottard est de proposer une collection qui sort de l'esthétique traditionnelle associée au genre de la science-fiction. Afin de revaloriser le genre, il va proposer une collection à l'image minimaliste synonyme du savoir-faire de la maison Penguins. 

1 Quelle lecture faites-vous du registre iconographique sélectionné pour cette collection ? En quoi vous semble-t-il pertinent dans un tel contexte ? Expliquez.

Dans un premier temps, nous pouvons dire que la volonté de Jim Sottard pour la composition générale des couvertures a été de créer une collection qui valorise l’identité de chaque titre à une valeur un peu plus faible que l’identité de la collection en elle-même. En effet, les couvertures sont pensées pour fonctionner toutes de la même façon. Le premier quart de la page est consacré au titre et au nom de l’auteur et le reste à l'iconographie. Comme pour la collection Penguin Mystery and Crime de Romek Maber ou la collection New Penguin Shakespeare de David Gentleman, l'iconographie occupe une place très importante dans la couverture. Cette place laissée à l'iconographie permet de créer l’identité de la collection. 

Le choix des illustrations est l’élément qui crée le plus gros contraste avec les couvertures habituelles de science-fiction. En effet les couvertures exubérantes aux couleurs criardes et aux caractères de titrage évoquant l’espace sont remplacés par des illustrations aux traits noirs et fins sur un fond blanc. Jim Stoddart décide de s’éloigner des couvertures de science-fiction typiques du XXe siècle qui semblent aujourd’hui dépassées. L’esthétique sobre de la collection reste néanmoins ancrée dans le genre de la science-fiction en représentant des schémas, des plans, des croquis et autres dessins évoquant des thèmes comme la science, le corps dans l’espace, les mathématiques... 

Chaque illustration est réalisée par un maître du modernisme tel que Pablo Picasso, Le Corbusier ou Herbert Bayer et représente une facette de son travail tout en étant en lien avec l’histoire du livre qu’elle illustre. Le choix d’artistes modernistes permet d’illustrer les classiques littéraires grâce à des classiques artistiques et liant le savoir-faire de ces artistes à la collection. Grâce à cette idée Stoddart arrive à apporter une dimension plus sérieuse au genre de la science-fiction et réussis à élever le genre au même niveau que des textes de littérature classique. On peut donc dire que son choix est pertinent car il modernise et rafraîchit l’image associée à la science-fiction. 

2 Comment interprétez-vous le choix typographique opéré ici, et la façon dont le caractère est employé dans les couvertures ? Quelle tendance historique du design graphique de telles stratégies semblent-elles convoquer ?

Nous allons maintenant nous intéresser à la partie supérieure des couvertures et notamment au choix typographique fait par Stoddart. Comme dit précédemment la partie supérieure des couvertures contient uniquement le texte et le nom de l’auteur. Le caractère typographique utilisé est le Theinhardt, créé par François Rappo et publié par la fonderie suisse Optimo en 2009. Ce caractère qui évoque l’Akzidenz Grotesk et L'Helvetica suit l’idée de modernité que veut créer Jim Stoddart. Il utilise le même corps et la même graisse du caractère (le medium) pour le titre et le nom de l’auteur. Le corps change seulement d’une couverture à l'autre en fonction de la taille des informations mais la graisse reste la meme. 

La distinction entre le titre et le nom de l’auteur se fait uniquement grâce à la justification et à la couleur. Le titre est justifié à gauche et le nom de l’auteur à droite, les deux sont alignés. Ensemble ils rappellent la composition de la collection Penguin Mystery and Crime de Romek Maber avec la présence d’un rectangle blanc pour en haut pour les informations textuelles. 

Comme pour beaucoup d’autres collections Penguin, la couleur a une valeur signalétique dans les couvertures. C’est par exemple le cas pour la collection Penguin Mystery and Crime qui est associée au vert ou encore à la collection Pelican Books qui est associée à un bleu vert.Pour les couvertures de la collection Penguin Classics Sci-fi la couleur sert à créer une distinction entre le titre et le nom de l’auteur mais aussi à identifier la collection. Pour la collection de classiques science fiction c’est le violet qui est utilisé en plus du titre on le trouve sur le dos du livre ainsi qu’en bas à droite sur le logo des éditions Penguin. Le violet et la seul couleur utilisée en plus du noir, les noms des auteurs sont écrits en gris afin d’êtres moins visible et de créer une véritable hiérarchie dans la page.

L’utilisation du Theinhardt a avant tout pour but d’être fonctionnel c'est-à-dire lisible et discret pour laisser un maximum d’espace à l'iconographie.

 Le choix d'utiliser Theinhardt comme le faisaient les typographes suisse du style international accentue le positionnement de Stoddard et son envie d'élever le genre de la science-fiction en faisant référence à des classiques de la typographie moderniste.

3 Quel semble avoir été le but poursuivi par le directeur artistique en ce qui concerne la perception traditionnelle du genre littéraire concerné par cette collection?

Grâce à sa volonté de faire référence au modernisme autant dans ses choix iconographiques que typographiques, Jim Sottard revalorise et élève le genre de la science-fiction afin qu’il ait la même reconnaissance auprès du public que les autres collections de Penguin. Il apporte un nouveau regard sur la science-fiction et change la perception traditionnelle du public en proposant des couvertures radicalement éloignées de l’esthétique des couvertures utilisées traditionnellement. De plus, il parvient à créer une ligne graphique uniforme qui permet d’identifier immédiatement la collection tout en étant cohérent avec le sujet de la science-fiction.
