Daniel had something that smelled like Max in his nest.

Daniel had stolen something that smelled like Max to put in his nest.

Max didn't have a lot, or really any, experience with the ins and outs of a courtship and most of what he did for Daniel was instinct - something he never really realized he was doing, just felt the urge, the drive, to care for Daniel or bring him treats. To show he could provide for Daniel, an omega.

His mind reeled with the confusion of Daniel's desperation for Max to get out of his apartment, the way he smelled so ashamed and embarrassed, and how it had made his own alpha instincts kick in hard at the realization that his hoodie, smelling like him, was snatched by Daniel for his nest.

Max sighed as he flopped himself onto his sofa, tucked safe back in his own apartment, and pulled his phone out of his pocket to call Daniel, who predictably rejected his call.

"why do you have my hoodie" he texted instead, watching his message switch to 'read' within seconds. He wasn't anxious really, just confused. Daniel's actions, Daniel's scent, it all conflicted with his words and Max didn't know what to do about it. Daniel had smelled sad when he'd told Max they'd just be friends. Daniel took something that smelled like Max for himself. It didn't make any sense.

"i'll give it back. sry." came Daniel's reply moments later and Max frowned his frustration down at his phone.

"i don't care about the hoodie daniel i care about why you don't want me but you do want things that smell like me"

This time the 'read' notification made Max's heart jump. He felt he had the right to ask. Daniel confused him so much.

"why do u think" nearly made Max throw his phone into the TV.

Max typed his reply and hit send. "you smelled sad when you told me to just be friends."

"just bc i know it's the right thing to do doesn't mean it's the thing i want to do."

"i don't want you to do whatever you think is right when we're both sad", Max sent, so brave and trying so hard.

His message was read and Daniel's little typing bubbles never appeared again.

Max sighed, slumping down on the sofa and closing his eyes, trying to process as best he could. He didn't know what he was doing, only that he'd been clear to Daniel what his intentions were and Daniel's conflicting words and actions made it impossible to parse through.

Max was about to check his phone again for a reply, when his head whipped round to the knock at his door.
