Been watching the Fictional Crush game with interest, here are some of mine, although maybe it would be more correct to call them formative influences 😂

First off: The Princess Bride. One of the first things I did when going on dating sites for the first time at the grand ol' age of 38 was ask for opinions on this movie. My now-fiance, who is 3 years older and therefore had no excuse, told me he'd never seen it! Obviously I pointed out the error of his ways. So we watched The Princess Bride on our first stay over at his house, then the following weekend his favourite - The Back to the Future trilogy.

I did not actually crush on Westley. I never have gone for blonds really. But I love the whole movie to my bones. Sort of a whole movie crush, if you will.

I'm not sure I would call these two crushes, just that they made me feel a bit... Odd.

David Bowie as Jareth was very odd for me. Dad had most of his 70's LPs so I was very familiar with his adoption of androgynous personas. But this was something else.

Tim Curry in Legend. Well if this wasn't the inspiration for thousands of devil romantasy fics.. that pose is one I'm sure Raphael copied in BG3 😂

So far, so typical of a geek girls 80s childhood.

Then I hit puberty around 1993.

The first fictional man to get my tummy fluttering was BJ Spatano in the Haunted duology. I have no idea who the model was. But the eyebrows. The eyelashes. The hair. That lower lip. The leather jacket. The leather thong around the neck juuust peeking out of the white tee. He was a ghost from the 50s! He has had a lifelong influence on my taste in men!

I loved these books. I was so sorry that he didn't end up with Angel that I made up my own fanfic for them, just in my head, while accepting that the actual ending was logically better for everyone concerned, really.

Oh my little goth self gulped The Crow down.

These two. Fucking perfection. So much yearning. Love them.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer - the movie. I could never get into the TV series. I'm a sucker for movies where the actors seem to be having a riot.

I wasn't into Beverley Hills 90210 and hadn't really thought much of its actors. I was never into the obvious teen magazine choices. But Luke Perry as Oliver was...🫠

Rutger Hauer was brilliant, he was the scary baddie in so many movies to me, so to see him chewing the scenery like this was fabulous.

Gary Oldman's Dracula. Ooof that perfect little goatee.

And finally... Lestat de Lioncourt. Again, not a crush (I'm failing at this crush game, aren't I?!). He is blond 😂 and none of the depictions ever captures how I picture him. Tom Cruise had fun with it but wasn't the right build. Stuart Townsend was... not right either. Lestat is a big guy! Sam Reid is probably as close as I've seen. I've not watched any of the new stuff yet, I'm almost scared to in case I feel let down 😂. I couldn't really describe how I felt about Lestat, until Anne Rice said that she considered him to be her masculine persona. That struck home for me although it sounds obvious now 😂

In summary: humourous fairytales, fae, devil, ghosts and so. many. damned. vampires. Yes my first attempt at writing an actual book was a vampire fantasy, how did you guess?

I was reading romantasy before they even gave it a portmanteau name, bitches!
