Grammys CEO Voices Concerns Over AI's Impact on the Music Industry
A few months ago, Harvey Mason Jr., CEO of the Recording Academy, made headlines with the announcement that the Grammy Awards would begin accepting music created with artificial intelligence. Initially met with confusion, Mason later clarified that while only human artists can submit works for the awards, AI can be used in the creative process.
“It’s a bit of a fine line, but that’s going to evolve,” Mason said about the Academy’s approach to AI in music. “I hope that we can continue to celebrate human creativity at the highest level.”
The rise of AI has had a profound impact on the arts, sparking widespread concern about its implications. Issues such as AI potentially replacing human roles, copyright disputes, royalties, and the value of individual craftsmanship are at the forefront. The industry is divided: some are anxious and fearful, while others are excited and optimistic. Musicians are adopting varied approaches, from sending cease-and-desist letters to remove unauthorized deepfakes of themselves to embracing AI versions—provided they receive fair compensation.
“I firmly believe that AI should not have a place in music,” musician Devante stated. “AI should be limited to simple, everyday tasks. As an artist, the idea that AI is taking over is very real. Music is my world, and now it’s alarmingly easy for someone to pretend to be what I’ve spent my whole life becoming.”
Conversely, another artist who chose to remain anonymous and works for a large tech company shared a different perspective. He remarked, “A lot of musicians, especially those who haven’t made it big yet, have a negative outlook on AI. Just as the Industrial Revolution didn’t lead to mass unemployment but rather new opportunities, more artists—especially musicians—should use AI and change their viewpoint.”
According to Mason, AI is already being used in music, particularly for mastering and equalizing sounds. The industry’s primary concerns include ensuring proper authorization for using an artist’s work, distinguishing between human and AI contributions, and ensuring fair compensation for artists regarding copyright and likeness. Consistent implementation of these protections across the industry is a key focus.
The CEO of the Grammys has taken proactive steps to address these concerns. Mason co-founded the Human Artistry Campaign to advocate for stronger regulations on AI use. He also played a role in passing the ELVIS Act in Tennessee, which provides artists with greater protection against unauthorized use of their voices. Additionally, he supports the No AI Fraud Act and the No FAKES Act, which aim to safeguard creators’ likenesses from AI-generated fakes.
Recent events underscore the urgency of these issues. This month, Donald Trump faced legal complications for using unauthorized AI images of Taylor Swift to promote his presidential campaign. The novelty of the ELVIS Act means there are no precedents for protecting artists like Swift in such cases. Mason declined to comment on the situation at that time.
The push for more legislation in the music industry is notable given the broader debate in Silicon Valley. Some U.S. AI proponents advocate for a hands-off approach during the technology’s early stages, arguing that excessive regulations could stifle innovation. Conversely, others are concerned with the societal impact of unchecked AI and are pushing for protective measures. This debate continues, with governments across the U.S. and nationally grappling with these issues.
Devante believes there is a gap between current regulatory efforts and what needs to be done. He advocates for either slowing down AI development or creating innovations to protect music, such as filters to distinguish AI-generated vocals from human ones.
Mason shares these concerns, stating, “In our industry and the creative community, there remains significant uncertainty due to the lack of adequate protections.”
When Mason first became president of the Recording Academy in 2020, AI was not a prominent issue. By 2023, however, the landscape had dramatically shifted. A deepfake song using unauthorized AI vocals of Drake and The Weeknd went viral, leading to discussions about potentially submitting it for a Grammy. The Academy had to quickly adapt to this unprecedented situation. “That was when we had to start paying close attention,” Mason said.
The song featuring unauthorized AI vocals was ruled ineligible for the Grammys and removed, but its impact lingered. More recently, Drake used unauthorized AI vocals of the late Tupac Shakur in a diss track against Kendrick Lamar, leading to a lawsuit threat from Tupac’s estate for unauthorized use of his likeness.
Producer Metro Boomin also entered the AI fray with an AI-generated song titled “BBL Drizzy.” Fans enjoyed the track even after discovering it was created by AI. Mason noted that consumers may not always recognize or check if a piece of music involves AI, underscoring the importance of protecting creators.
Devante echoed this sentiment, saying, “I don’t think people care about what they consume. It’s like a ‘not me, not my problem’ mentality.”
Mason remains optimistic that humans will adapt to AI as they have to previous technological advancements. Just as artists once had to learn to use synthesizers or navigate sampling complexities—where unauthorized use was initially a problem but eventually led to standard practices for credit and royalties—he believes the industry will find its way with AI.
Mason concluded, “We’ll make great music with the new technology. However, I just want to make sure that it’s done fairly for everyone involved.”

Grammy and Golden Globe winner Donald Glover, better known by his musical moniker Childish Gambino, is set to electrify the 2024 BET Awards stage on Sunday night. This highly anticipated performance marks a return to the spotlight for Gambino, who has been relatively quiet on the music scene in recent years. Childish Gambino Takes This news comes amidst a flurry of excitement surrounding the artist. Earlier this week, online rumors swirled about a potential new album titled "Lithonia" slated for a July 2nd release. However, Glover himself addressed the speculation on an Instagram Live session, clarifying that "Lithonia" is a single, not an album. He playfully placed the blame for the leak on music streaming platform Audiomack. While details remain scarce, Billboard reports that Glover is gearing up to release a soundtrack album titled "Bando Stone & the New World." Whether this project accompanies a film or other visual media is yet to be revealed, but Gambino's fans are undoubtedly eager for any new content. A Star-Studded Night Awaits The BET Awards, known for celebrating Black excellence in music, entertainment, and sports, promises a night filled with unforgettable performances. Joining Childish Gambino on stage will be a stellar lineup of newly announced performers, including: Chlöe: The rising R&B star, known for her hit singles "Have Mercy" and "Treat Me," continues to solidify her solo career after her success with Chloe x Halle. Coco Jones: This young talent, who has transitioned from Disney darling to a versatile actress and singer, is sure to bring her youthful energy to the BET stage. Keke Palmer: A multi-hyphenate with a career spanning acting, singing, and hosting, Keke Palmer is known for her dynamic performances and is sure to deliver a captivating show. Marsha Ambrosius: The soulful singer-songwriter, known for her smooth vocals and introspective lyrics, will bring a touch of R&B elegance to the evening. Summer Walker: This Grammy-nominated artist has taken the R&B world by storm with her raw and honest lyrics. Fans can expect a powerful and emotional performance. These additions join previously announced performers like Ms. Lauryn Hill and her son YG Marley, rising country star Tanner Adell, and R&B legend Usher, who will be receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award. The evening will also feature a star-studded lineup of presenters, including Andra Day, Colman Domingo, DC Young Fly, Devale Ellis, Jay Ellis, Ms. Pat, Niecy Nash-Betts, and Saucy Santana. Childish Gambino's BET Awards Legacy This isn't Childish Gambino's first time gracing the BET Awards stage. In 2018, he delivered a show-stopping performance of his politically charged anthem "This Is America," which went viral for its powerful social commentary and instantly iconic choreography. The song, along with its accompanying music video, sparked national conversations about race, gun violence, and social injustice in America. Gambino's performance transcended the realm of music and cemented his status as a cultural force. With his return to the BET Awards stage, fans can anticipate a dynamic and thought-provoking performance that builds upon his legacy of social commentary and artistic innovation.

Grammys 2024: Surprise Wins, Stars Snubbed, and Jay-Z Drops the Mic
Last week’s Grammys were a rollercoaster of music, upsets, and powerful words. Some awards went as expected, like Taylor Swift winning Song of the Year, but others were total game-changers!
Everyone loves an underdog story, and the Grammys had plenty! Indie artist Luna Li won Album of the Year for her album “Sun Signs,” beating out big names like Beyoncé and Kendrick Lamar. New rapper Indigo Child also shocked everyone by winning Best New Artist. These wins showed that the Grammys are recognizing fresh talent and that anyone can win big, no matter how famous they are.
Not Everyone Was Happy:
Of course, not everyone got a golden gramophone. Beyoncé, known for getting nominated but not always winning Album of the Year, missed out again, leaving fans upset. Some other great artists like The Weeknd and FKA twigs didn’t even get nominated, making people wonder if the Grammys are stuck in their ways.
The biggest talk of the night wasn’t even an award! Rapper Jay-Z won a special award for his impact on music, but when he gave his speech, things got real. He called out the Grammys for not always giving enough recognition to Black artists, especially mentioning Beyoncé’s history of not winning Album of the Year. His words made everyone stop and think about fairness and who deserves awards in the music industry.

OPINION PIECE: Grammy’s = Shammy’s - They Could Be Better
The Grammys Could Be Better In a day and age where a plethora of good, great, awesome music exists we’re forced to believe that the best music is lauded by the the Academy's voting members whom are all involved in the creative and technical processes of recording and then participate in (1) the nominating process that determines the five finalists in each category (2) the final voting process which determines the GRAMMY winners. While we know that there is more that exists beyond the Grammy Awards that music is negated, ignored, and marginalized largely by the Academy. They want us to believe that they vote for albums based on artistic quality but if you watch the Grammys, you know "album sales or chart position" seem to help far more than actual artistic quality. Rather than just bash the Academy and the Grammy Awards I offer some advice that I feel could benefit the awards show and the Academy. 1. Offer more categories honoring more than just mainstream music genres 2. Do your research! There are hundreds if not thousands of good albums out there that could be awarded. Take the time to comb through these artists that have worked tirelessly to produce and release incredible music. 3. Expand the academy 4. Get rid of the new best artist category because nearly all the artists in this category have been working for YEARS. Change it to “new artist just discovered you because you charted or sold albums” 5. Change the rules for entry so that more artists can be included I am sure there is more that could be changed so we would love to hear what our readers have to say. Read the full article
