Kontak Perkasa Futures - Dosen Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) berhasil mengimplementasikan pengolahan sampah menjadi energi alternatif penghasil listrik. Melalui penelitian berbasis Hydrothermal Carbonization, Dr Ridho Hantoro ST MT, berhasil mengurangi massa sampah secara signifikan pada prosesnya.
Penelitian yang dilakukan berangkat dari permasalahan penumpukan sampah di Indonesia yang semakin menjadi, terutama di kota-kota besar. Pemerintah daerah pun sudah ada yang memanfaatkan sampah menjadi listrik. Namun dari beberapa jenis metode masih memberikan permasalahan pengurangan massa yang tidak signifikan.
Dosen dari Departemen Teknik Fisika ITS ini terinspirasi dari konversi nilai energi dan banyaknya sampah yang menggunung di Tempat Pembuangan Akhir (TPA). Salah satu TPA yang mengaplikasikan metode ini adalah TPA Putri Cempo di bawah Pemkot Surakarta.
"Hasil proses hydrothermal carbonization akan digunakan sebagai bahan baku gasifikasi dan gas engine untuk memproduksi listrik," ujarnya, Selasa (14/1/2020).
Melalui penelitiannya berjudul Studi Pembangkitan Energi melalui Pengolahan Sampah Kota (MSW) dengan Proses Hydrothermal Carbonization (HTC) dan Gasifikasi, Ridho fokus menggunakan metode HTC dan Gasifikasi.

Pada prosesnya, lulusan S3 Teknik Kelautan ITS ini mengungkapkan, limbah dipisahkan dari logam dan material toksik yang ada, lalu dimasukkan ke dalam reaktor HTC. Pada kondisi saturasi biasanya 23 bar harus tetap dikontrol, hal itu juga tergantung kondisi dan komposisi karakteristik sampah.
"Bisa sampah plastik atau sampah organik seperti sayur-sayuran, limbah rumah tangga, plastik, kertas, dan lainnya," jelas pria kelahiran 1976 ini.

Sampah itu kemudian dibentuk bubur karbon (char). Setelah itu bubur tadi dihilangkan kadar airnya, lalu dikeringkan dan menjadi briket. Briket yang sudah dikeringkan dimasukkan ke dalam gasifier, dan didapatkan metana murni yang di-treatment. Selanjutnya, dimasukkan ke dalam gas engine atau motor bakar yang akan menghasilkan listrik seperti halnya genset.
"Apabila dalam pemanfaatan limbah menjadi biogas akan dihasilkan gas organik, tetapi hasil yang dikeluarkan dari gasifier akan berupa gas sintetik (syngas)," terang Ridho.
Menurut dosen yang juga menggeluti bidang energi terbarukan tersebut, penelitian yang sudah dilakukan ini diharapkan mampu memberikan kontribusi dalam menyelesaikan permasalahan sampah kota.
"Selanjutnya saya akan meneruskan penelitian ini dengan membuat prototipenya, lalu mencoba mengaplikasikannya," pungkas pria berkacamata ini.

More than 27 million holidaymakers travel around the world on cruise ships each year, and with up to 9,000 people living on one ship alone, vessels need be equipped to dispose of large amounts of waste. Currently, operators do this through incineration or disposal on land, in accordance with the standards set by Marpol Annex V.ย 
TECO TECH has developed a system that uses gasification as the means of waste disposal for heat recovery through proprietary sodium heat pipe economizers. To take their technology one step closer to implementation, the company has teamed up with DNV GL as well as Royal Caribbean Cruises (RCL), Carnival Corporation and Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) to carry out a technology qualification project.ย ย

How it works
Disposing of solid waste through gasification, means converting it to usable synthesis gas, or syngas. It is the production of this syngas which makes gasification so different from incineration. In the gasification process, the municipal solid waste (MSW) is not a fuel but a feed stock for a high-temperature chemical conversion process.ย 
โ€œOrganic or fossil fuel-based carbonaceous materials are mainly converted into three components: carbon monoxide, hydrogen and carbon dioxide. This is achieved by reacting the material at high temperatures, without combustion. Instead, the system uses controlled amounts of oxygen and/or steam,โ€ explains Henrik Brixen, CEO of TECO TECH. The resulting gas mixture is called syngas (from synthesis gas) or producer gas and is itself a fuel. The power derived from gasification and combustion of the resultant gas is considered to be a source of renewable energy, if the gasified compounds were obtained from biomass.ย 
Benefits and challenges
If the risks associated with the technology are addressed, the potential benefits are significant. โ€œLooking at the different vessel segments, our gasification unit would offer the greatest benefits to the cruise industry. It would not only cut down their vesselsโ€™ energy consumption, it could also generate large amount of syngas, which could be used to power other systems on board,โ€ says Brixen.ย ย

Orlando, FL (PRWEB), October 19, 2011: Capital Corp Merchant Banking has entered into a $140 million funding agreement with a US-based company to fund the first phase of a waste-to-energy plant, to be situated in Alajuela, Costa Rica. ย The full project will eventually amount to an investment totalling $400 million. ย As the Costa Rican government has grown impatient with landfills' negative impacts, this development comes at a most opportune time.
The funding agreement is based on 11% common stock and 89% debenture. ย The project consists of starting with a plant capable of generating 15 MW/hr of electricity, after which it will build 2 (two) additional plants that will produce 15 MW/hr of electricity each, derived from various wastes, for a total of 45 MW.
The technology for the plant comes from Entech Renewable Energy Solutions, a technology provider and global leader in Low Temperature Gasification technology.
Costa Rica, like many other countries around the world, is facing a waste management problem and energy crisis; its landfill dilemma has social, economic, and environmental repercussions; it struggles to keep up with increasing demand for electricity; its power production is limited, which has engendered setbacks in growth; and energy production and waste management have become highly politicized issues. ย This project represents a long-term solution to both waste management and electricity production, while taking into account the country's efforts to preserve its ecological and environmental balance. ย In fact, the Costa Rican Ministry of Health ruled in 2010 that municipalities would have to adopt sustainable and environmentally friendly means of processing municipal solid waste (MSW) henceforth.
The plant has the capacity to convert 100% of landfill waste, and once completely finished it will be able to handle an intake of 520,000 tons of gasifiable waste and generate electricity up to 47.4 MW/hr. ย 
Economic benefits to be derived from this ambitious project include but are not limited to: reduced cost of generating electricity; greater distribution of electricity throughout Costa Rica; reduce landfill-designated areas and thus reduce local pollution; increase property values in surrounding areas; myriad recycling benefits; and greater tourism value for Costa Rica as an eco-tourism hotspot as the country becomes 'greener'.
This project will also play a major role in Costa Rica's effort to reach its ambitious goal of becoming the world's first carbon neutral country by 2021. ย With this first project and 2 anticipated similar projects of similar size, the client intends to contribute to the reduction in the country's carbon footprint by well over 4 million tons of carbon or equivalent greenhouse gases over the next decade.
