Hi , first off congratulations on your mrcp! Its massive ! 😍 Wishing you more happiness and success.
So i am to embark on this same journey. I did my mbbs and residency in Pakistan and then cuz of some life circumstances had to take a break. Because of which i lost my connections as well so basically dont have a friend who i could ask this stuff.
I would be very grateful if you please guide me about these things
1. Is it true that i only need attested copy of my primary medical qualification for the application of mrcp1 ? The website doesn’t mention any other documents but dont they need proof of internship?
2. I am doing passmedicine questions and plan on doing pastest as well. I turn to other sources when i wana read more on the topic. Do you think there are any facebook groups etc that can be beneficial? Or should i just keep going.
3.Any other tips you want to give would be much appreciated
Thank you in advance. Love and prayers for you.
Hi, thank you and good luck to you!
I'm not sure. I think I remember sending a copy of my MBBS cert for part 1? But it may be different requirements for you if you're not working in the UK. I'd suggest emailing them to make sure.
I basically just used passmedicine and pastest for part 1 (and part 2), I didn't use any facebook groups. A mix of the two is definitely good because they have slightly different styles of questions. Keep doing questions and make notes on the stuff you get wrong/don't know - that's what I did anyway. Definitely make sure you do the official mock on the MRCP website at some point as that's the closest you'll get to the real thing https://www.mrcpuk.org/mrcpuk-examinations/part-1/part-1-sample-questions
Another tip I have is look at the breakdown for the number of questions for each topic, on this page https://www.mrcpuk.org/mrcpuk-examinations/part-1/format. This is how I decided which topics to spend more time on - no point stressing too much about learning all of ophthal when there's only going to be 4 questions on it! Prioritise the big topics. I would also suggest that at least at first, filter the questions on the question banks by one specialty at a time. That way, you will learn key concepts quicker because of the repetition. If you start by just doing all the topics in one go it'll be hard to focus on learning the concepts because it'll be overwhelming. So e.g. I'd do one day haematology, next day gastroenterology. Then later on, once you're more slick, do all the topics together.
Good luck!

HPV Vaccination of Adolescent Boys May Be Cost-Effective for Preventing Oropharyngeal Cancer
Everyday in my practice we perform Oral Cancer Screenings as part of our oral hygiene recare program.  This horrible and potentially disfiguring disease kills one person per hour every hour of the day and night.  We don’t charge for the screening, I do it because I think it is the right thing to do, pure and simple.
Most people don’t realize it, but the majority of oral and pharyngeal caners are caused, not be smoking and alcohol, but by infection with HPV 16 which is just one of many human papilloma viruses.  HPV is transferred to partners during oral sexual contact and there really aren’t clear clinical symptoms that someone actually has HPV 16.
However, since cervical cancer is caused by the same virus, the same vaccine will help protect both male and female patients.  Here is some really fascinating info on why vaccinating adolescent boys is important:
A new study indicates that vaccinating 12-year-old boys against the humanpapilloma virus (HPV) may be a cost-effective strategy for preventing oropharyngeal squamous cell cancer, a cancer that starts at the back of the throat and mouth, and involves the tonsils and base of the tongue. Published early online in CANCER, a peer-reviewed journal of the American Cancer Society, the study provides important information about HPV vaccination, which has proven effective against HPV-related disease in both sexes but remains controversial, especially in males.
Many western countries have established female HPV vaccination programs for preventing cervical cancer. Little is known about the cost-effectiveness of male-HPV vaccination, however. Donna Graham, MB, BCh, MRCPUK and Lillian Siu, MD, FRCPC, of the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, University Health Network, in Toronto, led a team that compared the potential costs and effectiveness of vaccinating adolescent boys in Canada against HPV for preventing HPV-related oropharyngeal cancer. When the investigators applied a statistical model to a population of 192,940 Canadian boys who were 12 years old in 2012, they found that HPV vaccination could save from $8 million to $28 million Canadian dollars over the boys’ lifetimes. Factors that could impact the cost savings of HPV vaccination in boys include, among others, vaccine cost, vaccine effectiveness, costs of cancer treatment, and survival of patients with HPV-related oropharyngeal cancers.
“We believe this study is important because HPV-related oropharyngeal cancer has increased significantly in incidence, especially in developed countries,” said Dr. Graham. “It is projected that by 2020, HPV-related oropharyngeal cancer will become the most common HPV-related cancer in the US, surpassing cervical cancer.”
Policy makers in many countries such as the United States, Canada, Austria, and Australia have recommended HPV vaccination in boys, but it is unfunded and is excluded from national immunization programs in many countries worldwide, notes Dr. Siu. “We hope that results from this study would raise awareness and lead to further assessment of this important public health issue,” she said.

What's the plan of attack for MRCP Part 2? I'm deciding whether to go for the Oct or Dec sitting. Thanks for answering Qs so far :)
Good question! So far I've just done a bit of very low-key revision on Passmed starting last week, like 30 questions a day sort of thing. It's actually harder than I thought it'd be though! I know the pass rate is much higher than part 1 so I think I was maybe a bit blasé about part 2, but now I've started there's defo a lot of stuff I don't know... especially because from what I've seen so far, part 2 focuses more on treatment plans and that was probably my weak point in part 1. I can figure out the diagnosis of a weird rare genetic condition but I struggle to remember which cardiology drug to give for what lol.
But I think my plan will be the same as what I did for part 1, seeing as that worked, which is:
- start with passmedicine questions. Only do questions from one specialty per day to start with, so that it's not too overwhelming and you can get repetition of concepts. E.g. one day I'll do cardiology q's, the next day I'll do renal.
- maybe for 10-20 mins a day also use the knowledge tutor on passmed too, because that's good for just drilling facts
- every time I get a question wrong, I make a note of the concept. I then either straight away or later that day make notes on and around that concept. That way, I end up with a notebook/notes app full of all the stuff I need to go over
- half way through the revision period (so for me that'll be mid august) get pastest as well and start doing that as well as passmed. (and ?reset passmed if I've finished most/all the questions by then). I think doing pastest really helped me get a good mark on Part 1 because to me, I thought the pastest q's were harder and more similar to the real thing.
- in the last 2-3 weeks: start doing all specialties together because that makes it harder to guess the answer, and similar to what the exam will be. Do the official mock exam on the MRCPUK website
- oh and also, I look up the specialties weighting on the MRCPUK website (it's under 'format'). Some specialties (e.g. cardiology, gastro) are big ones and each have roughly 19 questions in the exam. Whereas Ophthal has on average 3 questions. So if you're running out of time... prioritise the ones that'll come up a lot
Good luck with your revision!

Comparing MRCP UK and MRCPI Ireland: A Thorough Examination
Tumblr media
Here, we compare MRCP UK and MRCPI Ireland in great detail.
MRCP
Anyone who wants to pursue a career in the UK must pass the Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP) exam. MRCP Part 1, MRCP Part 2 (written), and MRCP PACES (Practical Assessment of Clinical Examination Skills) make up this three-part series. The examination assesses the candidates’ clinical and medical knowledge and abilities.
MRCPI
If you’re an OB/GYN expert hoping to reside in Ireland, you might want to consider the Membership of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland (MRCPI).The three sections of the exam — MRCPI Part 1, MRCPI Part 2 Written, and MRCPI Part 2 OSCE — evaluate applicants’ clinical and medical knowledge.
MRCP Exam Structure
MRCP Part 1
There are two papers in the one-day MRCP Part 1 test. Every paper lasts for two hours. There are one hundred multiple-choice questions in a best-of-five format on the exam. There are no deductions for incorrect answers; each right response receives one mark.
MRCP Part 2
There are two papers in the MRCP Part 2 test. Each paper has 100 multiple-choice questions, or MCQs, and lasts three hours. Both exams can be taken by candidates on the same day.
MRCP PACES
A clinical setting, such as a hospital or clinical skills facility, is used for MRCP PACES. Eight patient interactions and five stations make up the assessment, which evaluates the seven fundamental competencies required for advanced specialty training. A clinical station lasts for twenty minutes. There is a five-minute intermission in between every station.
MRCPI Exam Structure
MRCPI Part 1
The computer-based MRCPI Part 1 exam evaluates your theoretical understanding of the core concepts of the specialisation you are taking the exam for. Both extended matching questions (EMQs) and multiple-choice questions (MCQs) are included in the exam. To sit for the MRCPI Part 2 tests, you must pass this exam.
It is crucial to remember that there are some exclusions that permit applicants to take the MRCPI 2 Written test without having to complete MRCPI Part 1.
MRCPI Part 2 Written
The application of clinical knowledge is the main focus of the Part 2 Written test. Paper 1 and Paper 2 are the two papers that make up the exam. A combination of MCQs, EMQs, and clinical case-based questions are included in each paper. Your diagnostic and case management skills in a variety of specialties — cardiology, pulmonary medicine, infectious diseases, cancer, rheumatology, and others — will be evaluated on the exam.
MRCPI Part 2 Clinical:
The Objective Structured Clinical Exam, or MRCPI PART 2 OSCE, is the last component of the MRCPI and assesses candidates’ clinical knowledge and communication skills. This practical test is administered in an environment akin to a hospital.
With a variety of short- and long-term MRCP courses, MRCPI Courses, our team of professionals can assist you in advancing your career in the UK or Ireland.
