I have so many thoughts about this entire sequence, from the way Hiccup and Toothless get along to the MUSIC- (the music analysis is going to my tags)

But im gonna talk about Toothless pov again

I always think of this is like, the forbidden friendship scene for Toothless the way the actual forbidden friendship was for Hiccup

If Hiccup's scene was Toothless connecting to Hiccup through human things (sharing food, smiling, art and all that)

Then this scene is Toothless' because Hiccup connects with Toothless through flying, something I've always headcanoned to be what dragons (the ones that fly anyway) need not just to survive, but to live and bond with others.

if Hiccup's FF is the beginning of the potential then Toothless' FF is the "end", the moment where the potential is found and fulfilled, the thing that really solidifies their friendship because both has now experienced and accepted the other's unique sides

Just, yeah Toothless sees Hiccup just getting it, understanding why flying is so wonderful, hearing him cheer and whoop in joy like a fledgling's first time in the air, and seeing him at the end instinctively understand what to do-

Like that sudden spin near the end of the sea pillars- and both of them looked surprised they even managed to do that together instinctively- when just a few minutes ago Hiccup couldnt even dodge the two very obvious sea pillars in the beginning

He looks up at this human, this strange clever, brilliant little human who has somehow made this even possible, who has broken every preconception he has, who is now flying with him with a dragon's instinct but baring his teeth in that human way of expressing joy, screaming something he could not parse perfectly in his dragon tongue but understood the meaning all the same.

i looovve seeing people's different designs of Hans as human. Everyone has their own way of putting his distinctive colours, whether it's his makeup, tie, sunglasses, hair, mask, or any other place. it's always fun to see what people come up with, can't say there's ever been a human hans i was disappointed to see

for a long while when I'd visit my relatives on the chesapeake for a brief respite from the hells of home life, there was an odd beat-up little cardboard box sitting amid the plastic-cased ds games in the gamestop I'd always visit (rarely to actually get anything)

finally, one time before the journey back to hell, i actually had a scattering of bills in my pocket. after looking around at the shelves of shovelware (i didnt have enough for any of the proper titles like mario or pokemon), i finally decided to bring the story to a close and give the ragged little box a home

it was Sola-to-Robo, one of the rarest ds games ever published, possibly the most technically advanced engine ever devised on the system, and among the most unique and emotional experiences I'd ever encountered in a video game (which is saying something considering I'd already all but lost emotion by that point)

i barely remember it anymore, but for the time it became my favorite standalone game of all time (although it technically is part of a series, succeeding the PS1's equally obscure Tail Concerto)

I still dream of returning to it and seeing just how well it holds up from a more experienced point of view

the one thing i do remember is that it had and still has by far the most beautiful and powerful opening song of any game ive ever encountered, which is saying something considering the hundreds out there! it's up there with Atelier Meruru's Cadena

also the fact that when you beat the game, after the credits it goes "chapter 2" and there's an entire sequel within the game. altogether both parts are probably not longer than any other rpg, but on the original ds where full 3d action rpgs were resource intensive and typically limited in scope, it was mindblowing

also it apparently had like undefeatable copy-protection and to this day still requires a modified rom to emulate or even run on original hardware without a card?

anyways.... remarkable game. i was shocked to find that it's one of the most sought after titles on the system. in rarities ive personally enountered it's second probably only to Retro Game Challenge, which I encountered at regular price once in the late 2010s but didnt have the money for at the time... that's my "one that got away"

re: the smallest man who ever lived. did you see that the Eras stage setup for this song emulates the Victoria Secret show invasion segment (from the vs show taylor supposedly met karlie)?

So l guess gaylors who are making this song about karlie have actually a point. Not only lyrics (many of the song's verses suggest kaylor), song callbacks (mad woman parallels) AND the stage setting for this song is giving karlie. She might be the smallest man who ever lived in Taylor's eyes.

i have an experience when i listen to taylor's music and see her visuals where, because i see such overwhelming evidence on the daily that suggests that not only is there no bad blood between t&k but in fact quite the opposite, i can feel karlie's presence in taylor's art as a general major muse. and so even though i do not believe they had a falling out the way the public believes they did, i can hear things in otherwise sad songs about heartbreak or loss - like cardigan, gold rush, the 1 - that evoke karlie with specifics but it doesn't make me question what i think happened or is happening between them.

taylor's literally constant references to the vsfs never feel like she's making a dig at karlie. to me, her obsession with these events in her art tell me that these were really significant times for her that remain important, and she wants people to keep looking back at that. i didn't notice this particular parallel in the TSMWEL set, but if it really is another reference to vsfs, it wouldn't make me question that all the other millions of instances of her doing that were not done with love. in fact, it would make me think about its use in this song and what that might actually mean in the context of the rest of her body of work: if all other vsfs allusions have been joyful/heartfelt/full of love, how might that alter the intended interpretation of this song?
