MLB: Awaiting The Division Of Billions This Fan Steps Back

Yeah, okay.

I definitely agree with you re: players' rights, duration of the season, and forcing owners to compete. The latter especially needs to be addressed and, yes, would improve the sport far more than any rule changes to the sport itself. I suspect all of these things will be covered in the renegotiation of the MLBPA's collective bargaining agreement next year, which will hopefully bring big wins for our boys.

Now, I'm not gonna stop hating the single game Wild Card, but that's really a matter of personal taste. I recognize its appeal; and of course, it's given us a few World Series winners. But its current expansion to two teams is hardly sacred. It's practically brand new, and a single-elimination game is an affront to a sport which prides itself on being a marathon, not a sprint. (For anyone who hasn't had a chance to look more closely at everything, the proposed changes wouldn't do away with the concept of the Wild Card - rather, they expand it to include a second match-up and follow a more traditional format.)

As for teams choosing their opponents, the postseason is already structured to pit the best records against the worst. And if (big if) MLB actually made these changes, the team with the very best record would choose last. So I still think there's potential there. Teams will try to moneyball their way through a decision with Big Data, and underdogs will win anyway as underdogs often do, embarrassing the management who thought they'd do well against someone soft.

But overall yes, I definitely agree that the most urgent change is to address the root issue of owner greed. In the meantime, if players do, as you reasonably suggest, have concerns about the current and less viral proposal, they hopefully have the upper hand with upcoming negotiations to make their feelings known.

Seven teams is a fucking lot to have in the postseason but it gets more people invested

I’ve seen a lot of people SUPER mad about this and I respect that - we all love different things about the same great game, and this does change it in some ways. But I think this is the kind of freshening up which preserves the integrity of the sport while mixin it up a bit
