LAS VEGAS — Devin Haney (30-0, 15 KOs) retained his undisputed lightweight crown with a razor-thin unanimous decision victory against Ukraine's three-division world champion Vasiliy Lomachenko (17-3, 11 KOs) Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The fight began with an aggressive start from Lomachenko, who used his signature combination of feints, footwork, and head movement to close the distance against Haney. On the inside, Lomachenko had success in landing combination punches, but on the outside, Haney was able to land jabs and hooks to the body. In the later rounds, Lomachenko had more success as his combinations became more frequent. Haney, on his part, appeared to be hurt by Lomachenko's combos, but he fought back strongly in the final round and managed to lessen Lomachenko's aggression with additional body punches. Haney made the second defense of his undisputed title with scores of 115-113 2x and 116-112. Haney said, "Lomachenko is a future Hall of Famer. It was a blessing. He was my toughest opponent by far. He is very crafty, and we put on a great fight for the fans. “He’s a crafty fighter. He turns it up in the championship rounds. I just have to take my hat off to him. He’s a great fighter. “This is all experience. Me and my team are going to go back to the house, watch the fight and reflect on it. I’ve been at 135 for a long, long time. This is my 30th fight. I’ve been here at 135 since I was 16 years old. We’re going to go back to the lab and figure out what’s next.” Loma said,"I don’t want to talk about [the decision]. All the people saw what happened today. “Before, I thought he would be better. He’s a tough fighter. He’s a good fighter. But he’s not a pound-for-pound fighter. “I think I showed that I can still be in boxing. I’m in good shape now. And see you next time. “Right now I want to go back home and support my country and support my Ukrainian orthodox church.” Valdez Repeats Victory against Lopez
After more than one year of inactivity, Oscar Valdez made a successful ring return with a 10-round unanimous decision win in a rematch against Adam Lopez. Valdez (31-1, 23 KOs) pushed the action early, using the head movement he polished under head trainer Eddy Reynoso. The pride of Nogales, Sonora, Mexico, had success in hurting Lopez in the third and fourth rounds, but Lopez (16-5, 6 KOs) began landing punches of his own in the following rounds. However, in the later rounds, Valdez’s constant pressure began to take a clear toll as he nearly stopped Lopez in the final round. Scores: 98-92, 98-91 and 97-93. Valdez said, "I was trying to be the better fighter. With someone with his speed, you can’t get too confident. I was just trying to be the better and smarter fighter. “We all want Emanuel Navarrete. Nothing but respect for him. He’s a great champion. The whole world wants to see that fight. Let’s make it happen now.” Muratalla Stops Nakathila in Two Rounds Raymond Muratalla wanted to make a statement, and that's exactly what he did as he scored a brutal second-round TKO over Namibian puncher Jeremia Nakathila. Muratalla (18-0, 15 KOs) entered the fight cautiously as he was aware of Nakathila’s power, but after studying him in the first round, he began to land his punches in the second. A right hand from Muratalla wobbled Nakathila (23-3, 19 KOs) and sent him reeling towards the corner, where Muratalla unleashed a nonstop attack that forced referee Robert Hoyle to end the fight at 2:48. Muratalla said, "I was so prepared for this fight. I’ve been training for this fight. I’ve been so dedicated. I’m so focused, and I’m ready for anybody. “I think I sent a big message to the lightweight division. Nobody has ever stopped Nakathila. I just stopped him in the second round. I think that’s a huge statement. “I want the winner of the main event. That’s who I want.” Nakatani Captures WBO Title with KO over Moloney Junto Nakatani (25-0, 19 KOs) is now a two-division world champion. The fighting pride of Sagamihara, Japan, captured the WBO junior bantamweight world title with a scintillating 12th-round knockout over Andrew Moloney (25-3, 16 KOs).
After adjusting to Moloney’s offense in the first round, Nakatani landed a right uppercut that dropped Moloney. The Australian former former world champion was undeterred, even as they clashed heads in the third round, causing a cut over Nakatani’s left eye and one over Moloney’s right eye.
As the rounds progressed, Nakatani’s dominance increased. Moloney rallied late with short punches on the inside, but those left him vulnerable to straight left hand that dropped him in the eleventh round and an overland left in the twelfth that ended the fight. Time of stoppage: 2:42. Nakatani said."I was very pleased and satisfied to have a good knockout. I was ready for him and his style. I knew he would fight that way and we adjusted to that. “I think this win opens up a big road for me. I want unification fights. It can be against anybody. It can be with [Juan Francisco] Estrada or anybody.”
Ali Walsh and Rosenberger Fight to Draw Nico Ali Walsh (8-0-1, 5 KOs) wanted to deliver another victory for the fans of his adopted hometown of Las Vegas, but tonight he encountered a stylistic challenge in Danny Rosenberger (13-9-5, 4 KOs) with whom he fought to a split draw after eight rounds of middleweight action. Ali Walsh worked from a high guard where he tried to pepper Rosenberger with quick jabs and right hands to the body, but Rosenberger used his footwork to prevent Ali Walsh from establishing his offense. Ali Walsh attempted to work on the inside, but Rosenberger would tie him up before finding the center of the ring and continuing to box on the outside. Scores: 77-75 Ali Walsh, 77-75 Rosenberger and 76-76. Lightweights: Emiliano Fernando Vargas (5-0, 4 KOs) defeated Rafael Jasso (3-1, 1 KO) via second-round knockout. The 19-year-old prodigy worked off a quick jab and lead left hook before landing hard counter punches. After finding his rhythm, Vargas switched to southpaw and a left hook to the body to stop Jasso. Time of stoppage: 1:41. Junior Featherweights: Floyd Diaz (9-0, 3 KOs) overcame a relentless attack from Mexican warrior Luis Fernando Saavedra (9-9, 3 KOs) en route to a six-round unanimous decision victory. Diaz fought off his back foot for the entire fight, using short counterpunches to land in between Saavedra’s wide punches. Scores: 80-72 2x and 79-73 Lightweights: Abdullah Mason (8-0, 7 KOs) earned his fourth straight stoppage with a TKO over Desmond Lyons (8-3, 2 KOs) at :32 of the sixth round. The Cleveland southpaw's relentless offense was too much for Lyons, who had stopped responding to Mason's punishing shots in the final round, forcing referee Robert Hoyle to call a halt to the fight. Middleweights: Amari Jones (9-0, 8 KOs) opened the night of action with a sixth-round TKO against Pachino Hill (8-3-1, 6 KOs). Time of stoppage: 1:16.

so i've been watching a lot ot Defunctland, and it got me wondering what drew you to Disney? you're the person i kind of defer to when it comes to Disney, because you know SO much about it and are so passionate about it, and i'm curious where that passion came from.
We weren’t a go every year family but we went to WDW a few times when I was a kid because like 95% of New Yorkers we had relatives in Florida, and it made for a (relatively) cheap vacation. So there’s definitely the childhood nostalgia aspect at work. I have a lot of fond memories there, especially with my family, before things got so strained and I started to feel so alienated from them. We still joke to this day about one of my adult cousins being barely taller than the Ewok we took pictures with (they used to do Meet & Greets outside Star Tours in the first couple of years after MGM opened). Things like that. It also helps that as an 80s baby I was square in the perfect demographic to go nuts when WDAS began its Renaissance period. I had all those VHS tapes with the clamshell covers and literally wore The Little Mermaid out, to give you an idea.
I took a 20 year hiatus, my last family trip was in 93 or 94? Despite going multiple times we were not a Disney Family(tm), I wasn’t a little kid anymore (p sure my last trip was when I was 13? I know we just missed the opening of Tower of Terror at then MGM Studios). So Mom was like “alright that’s enough”, because like most folks she believed it was for small kids.
my first time back as an adult was in 2016, when she and I took my younger Floridian cousin there for her first trip as a junior high graduation present to her. Mom and I were absolutely skint but somehow made a quick, largely unplanned Memorial Day weekend trip happen and while the padawan had a good time it was the whole opposite of how I like to travel. I vowed to come back and do it “right” as soon as I was able. Because despite eating at the shittiest quick service places and staying off site, I fell in love with the parks all over again and it became special interest territory for me again.
Like even as a kid I was obsessed with Imagineering, specifically, and not just riding on rides or hugging characters. You have to understand that I was a giant fucking nerd basically from birth, staying up all night playing SimCity and similar strategy games, getting those Eyewitness Books on how stuff gets made from the library, etc. So I was fascinated by how the parks were designed, the storytelling in the theming, insane attention to detail, etc. 80s Epcot was heaven on earth to me, I probably loved it even more than MK if I’m honest. Fuck I used to collect the transportation trading cards for the monorails and boats! I used to tape all those Samantha Brown specials on the Travel Channel. Even the planning aspect was a thing I was crazy for as a kid. When mom would say we were going, we’d always get the Birnbaum guide for that year and I’d sit there with my little highlighter and Lisa Frank notebook making my must do lists, trying to figure out the best strategies for doing everything I wanted, etc. At 7-10 years old fam! 😂 And when I started going back as an adult that childhood special interest came roaring back with a vengeance.
Nowadays I can spend half the day just taking in the theming details at Animal Kingdom for example and I enjoy the atmosphere as much as the attractions. I maintain that one of the most beautiful sunrises anywhere on this bitch of an Earth is over Seven Seas Lagoon on the beaches at the Polynesian and Grand Floridian; I would put it up against the ones I saw on a cruise ship in the middle of the Mediterranean, even. And as an introverted femme, it’s the first place I’ve ever solo traveled to that wasn’t visiting friends or family, and felt 100% safe. My favorite is still the trip I took with Dandy but I have so much fun going solo.
The type of vacations I have there now are completely not what my mom could afford when I was growing up. We never stayed on property except a few visits to the Dolphin that my mom saved up for when it opened, thanks to Costco packages and nurse/govt worker discounts. I knew not to ask for anything and we never ate table service except for the odd character meal at the Swan. Which I understand completely in hindsight I mean my mom was a single parent and while she made ok money as an RN things were tight. But as an adult controlling the purse strings it’s a lot more fun.
There’s many more places I want to visit in the world, don’t get me wrong. I feel sorry for the Disney stans who never go anywhere but the parks. But even as heinously expensive as it’s gotten, even as things are stripped away and watered down by Chapek chasing shareholder profits at the expense of guests, it’s still my favorite place. I still cry when I turn that corner onto Main Street and see the castle. I don’t care how cringe other people think it is or how much we dreaded Disney Adults have become the internet’s favorite punching bag now that it’s not furries, bc of a minority of folks who would make any community look bad. I’m a proud Childless Millennial guest at the parks. One of the benefits to getting older is being freer and freer of fucks to give tbh.
Yes Disney is a terrible corporation that could really stand to be broken up (my fever dream is Parks Resorts & Experiences gets spun back off into their own division and taken over by an Oriental Land Co. type entity that will let WDI really go nuts the way they get to do in the Japanese parks). No, Cast don’t get paid nearly enough for this shit. Yes, Port Orleans Riverside needs to get burned to the ground and re-themed to something besides the damn Antebellum South. But the parks are special to me, still, and I’ll keep going as long as I’m able.
#I’m so sorry you activated the Special Interest mode#and y’all wonder why I love stephanivien so much lmao#glaivesteele#ask bisho

Chapter 13 - PART 2: The Hotel Incident
Detroit Michigan, MGM Grand Hotel Room 1136, May 18 2017
(Andi is 29, Chris is 52)
ANDI: If there was a way to describe just exactly the feeling I have it would be as if I'm up on the highest mountain where the air is really thin. I'm still able to breathe but it's a completely different atmosphere.
It's strange. I mean one minute I'm in the studio with Chris recording a track with him - a song I wrote, that he ended up finishing that he wanted to put on his solo record he was working on. His gorgeous blue eyes watching me as I play my black Gibson Les Paul - the one he stole for me all those years ago. I remember there was a knock on the upstairs door and he got up from the mixing board, gave me the sweetest kiss on my lips and headed upstairs to answer it, and now I'm here, with no warning at all.
I'm finally able to regain my composure as Chris holds me in his arms. Sometimes when I would feel the pull to time slip, this is exactly what he would do to help calm me if there wasn't anything else. The ringing in my ears has stopped finally and the lightheadedness is beginning to fade. Just having his arms wrapped around me is all the comfort I need when everything is spinning out of control. like it is right now.
"Andi... please don't slip," He whispers again.
"It's ok... I'm not going to..."I exhale as the final wave of nausea leaves me.
"I have been having just one of the worst goddamn weeks of my life, let alone the last fucking few years haven't been the best either. I never thought I was ever gonna see you again after the last time you slipped... and I'm not saying this to make you feel like... fuck... I don't know...I just... I had given up. I just didn't want it anymore. I wanted out and I had no idea how to get out... I mean..." Chris says trying to hold it together as he still holds me tight in his arms, but I can tell that he's about to fall apart. He always gets that shaky tone to his voice when he's about to fall apart, and let me tell you he doesn't do that very often. The only other time he sounded like this was when Andy died.
"You stopped me... you stopped me from making the biggest mistake that I could have ever made in my life... and the truth is... as much as I tried to move on from you, knowing that you couldn't control that you slipped, seeing you last night on that floor in the other room made me realize just how much I've missed you, and how I never fucking stopped loving you,"
He pulls away just a little and touches his forehead to mine. His blue eyes flick open to look into mine and I can see all the years that I have apparently missed with him.
"Chris I - I'm so... I'm so sorry I - " I start but he hushes me.
"I don't want you to be sorry. I'm not saying this to make you feel that way at all. I'm saying this because I have missed you for 18 years and now that you're here, I just want to tell you that I still fucking love you," Chris says, his voice still shaky as he closes his eyes. I bite my bottom lip and then without even thinking about it, I press my lips to his.
His lips feel amazing, his kiss still the same, full of lust and emotion that he always has with me. His hand move to the nape of my neck, his fingers gripping my curls as he deepens his kiss, becoming full of hunger as his tongue plays with mine. Before I know it In one movement, he moves me towards the bed and just as I feel the edge of the bed against the back of my knees, I break from his lips and drop down giggling and he laughs that sweet laugh he always does. He then leans down and presses his lips back to mine as I reach up, lacing my fingers through his curls that I've missed since he decided to shave his head back in '93.
"Mr. Cornell...? Mr. Corne- Oh, I'm sorry I uh..."
Chris, startled, breaks from my lips as his bodyguard - The same voice from last night, I think he said his name was Martin? - opens the hotel room door to see us, once again catching us in a moment. Chris glances behind him as Martin clearly looks a little embarrassed.
"Your vehicle is ready to take you to the airport," Martin says sheepishly.
"Alright, thank you, Martin," Chris says and gives him a little half smile as I try to hide behind Chris.
"Do you need any accommodations for the lady... at all?" Martin asks. It felt so strange to hear that Chris has people doing things for him now, like making sure cars are ready to take him places and a Bodyguard always checking on him. I really have slipped far into the future.
Chris glances back at me for a moment and gives me that coy smile he always does, looking exactly the way he did, 20 years ago in his time.
"You um... you want to come with me? I'm pretty sure Kim, Matt and Ben would love to see you again," Chris says sweetly brushing a curl out of my eyes.
"Ok," I say quietly and he touches his forehead to mine for a moment.
"Yea Martin, can you book another ticket to Columbus...? Same flight, preferably same seats...?" Chris glances back at him.
"Will do," Martin says with a small smile and disappears out of the bathroom. Chris turns back to me and cups my face in his palm once more, the sweetest smile spreading across his lips.
"So, I guess I'm gonna need some more clothes then?" I say quietly.
"Nah, I figured you could just steal them like you always did," Chris jokes.
"Right, 'cause you know I just love having to do that when I time slip," I roll my eyes and Chris chuckles and places a kiss on my forehead.

(Significantly More Than) Ten Songs Which Have Moved Me
@progamuffin tagged me with this and I like doing these so I thought I’d get right to it. I might even post some explanations! In no particular order:
1. Benjamin Britten, “Elegy” (fourth movement, Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings [Op. 31], 1943)—A gorgeous and chilling setting of William Blake’s enigmatic poem “The Sick Rose”. Knowing more about Britten’s life and his struggles with how he saw himself as a person add an extra veneer of eeriness and pathos to this one.
2. St. Vincent, “Black Rainbow” (Actor, 4AD, 2009)—This one is sort of tied with “Laughing With a Mouth of Blood”, as both wonderfully capture a very particular set of experiences and emotions which resonate with me personally, both lyrically and in the superficially upbeat, lush music. I’m giving “Black Rainbow” a slight edge, though, as a splendid depiction of the claustrophobia and frustration which chronic depression brings.
3. Wire, “Map Ref. 41ºN 93ºW” (154, EMI, 1979)—The perfect power-pop song, perfectly encapsulating the wonderment of realising how truly vast and beautiful the landscape is, dashed with cheeky yet ecstatic turns and wrapped in immaculate synth and guitar arrangements. Known to make me cry tears of joy, literally. Fantastic.
4. Have a Nice Life, “Earthmover” (Deathconsciousness, Enemies List Home Recordings, 2008)—The first four songs on this album, as a bloc, are incredibly compelling, but I’m giving it to the grand finale here for its sheer apocalyptic power and strange mixture of holy joy and abyssal melancholy. “We wish we were dead,” indeed.
5. Prurient, “Myth of Love” (Black Vase, Load Records, 2005)—One of the scariest experiences that I have ever had with music was listening to this for the first time alone in my room one night with all of the lights off. The manipulations of the vocals made it sound as if the very static hiss of the amplifiers were speaking, as if this were a recording without human intervention, a self-recorded exorcism of something that had never been alive.
6. Dälek, “Ever Somber” (Absence, Ipecac, 2005)—The culmination of an album and a thesis which builds by degrees. An instrumental which swoops down like a formation of black swans, into which weave erudite lyrics at once quietly delivered and charged with righteous anger. A way forward for political music which I had not considered prior to my exposure to this group.
7. Ruth Crawford Seeger, String Quartet (1931)—Hard to explain this one, except that there is something immensely satisfying about a work of high modernist composition with so much humour, verve, spookiness and outright melody. Foreshadows total serialism and drone music alike.
8. Jute Gyte, “I Am in Athens and Pericles is Young” (Perdurance, Jeshimoth, 2016)—Not difficult at all to explain this one, insofar as it speaks for itself. Any song from this album could go here, but the sheer extremity of the ideas and revelry in abstraction make this one a fine exemplar. Easily the most exciting “band” in black metal today.
9. Swans “The Glowing Man” (The Glowing Man, Young God, 2016)—Pure undeniable minimal-meets-maximal transcendence. Simply astonishing for every minute of its significant runtime, challenged only by the perfection of the album closer “Finally, Peace”.
10. Coil, “Where Are You?” (Musick to Play in the Dark Vol. 2, Chalice, 2000)—The pure terror inspired by “Strange Birds” and “Ether” from this spectral duo count for a great deal, as do the exquisite requiems which close each album, and the synth odysseys of “Red Birds...” and “Tiny Golden Books”. These albums are, not to put a finer point on it, stone cold classics. But for a taste of pure outer sphere mystery filtered through a haze of attic dust, “Where Are You?” cannot be beat. It is aching nostalgia for a place beyond birth and death.
11. Sonic Youth, “Hoarfrost” (A Thousand Leaves, DGC, 1998)—Skeins of guitar like wood-smoke and frozen branches zigzagged over a snowy landscape, winding in and out of one another, glistening at times and curling dark and quiet at others over the patter of toms and warm yet distant vocals, like something hiding in the very heart of the woods.
12. Angels of Light, “Praise Your Name” (New Mother, Young God, 1999)—Another Gira song? Really? Yes, really. A love song to the righteous hatred of a broken person, in luminous tones full of sacral awe.
13. Current 93, “The Bloodbells Chime” (How I Devoured Apocalypse Balloon, Durtro, 2005)—An utterly heartbreaking song in any version, but I wanted to highlight this slower, wearier arrangement from a rather obscure live recording, which absolutely aches with sorrow in the final verse: “Tommy Catkins still sends his regards...” One more reason to cry, this time with no joy whatsoever.
14. Dome, “Keep It” (Dome 2, Dome, 1980)—Another exercise in obscure and paralysing nocturnal terror, here triggered by the realisation that I had no idea what I was hearing or what any of it meant. Like “Ever Somber” and “Earthmover”, this is less a singular sensation than a cumulative one, although like “Where Are You?” or “I Am in Athens...” it more or less stands for the album experience as a whole.
15. Sutcliffe Jügend, “The Death of Pornography” (Blue Rabbit, Crucial Blas, 2012)—As above, so below; from Kafka to Bataille. While the dread of this LP is less subtle than Dome’s approach, it is a similarly restrained effort on an instrumental level, and while it was the title track which made me put this one down for months, it was the closer which made it both a classic and something which I feel uneasy recommending.
16. Bügsküll, “Flowers Smile” (Distracted Snowflake Volume One, Pop Secret, 1997)—A pop song which is also not anything resembling popular music, simple and sweet and unaffected yet deeply strange and intimate. Such a thoroughly underrated musician.
17. The Velvet Underground, “Candy Says” (The Velvet Underground, MGM, 1969)—What is there to even say?
There are certainly more than this but I should probably stop now.
@nyathescurial, if you haven’t done this yet, you’re it. Also @section42l, @allelesonwheels, @sfsorrow, @kitswulf, @carrionade if any of y’all are interested.

Catriona Gray
Michelle McLean
Catriona Gray, 24, of the Philippines and Michelle McLean, 46, of Namibia have something in common aside from the obvious and well-known fact that they are both confidently beautiful with a heart. The former is a candidate in Miss Universe 2018, in which the latter is a judge.
At the age of 19, McLean was crowned Miss Namibia 1991. She represented Namibia in Miss World 1991 and finished fourth runner-up.
McLean joined Miss Universe 1992 and won the title. She became the first and still the only woman representing Namibia to win the title.
On the other hand, Gray is the eighth woman from the Philippines and the most recent one to make it to the Top 5 of Miss World. The first seven are Cecilia Amabuyok, Evangeline Pascual, Ruffa Gutierrez, Mafae Yunon, Karla Bautista, Gwendoline Ruais and Megan Young.
On December 18, 2016, Gray represented the Philippines in Miss World 2016 at the MGM National Harbor in Oxon Hill, Maryland, United States. Aside from making it to the Top 5, she also won the Multimedia award, was second place in the talent competition and was one of the five finalists in the Beauty with a Purpose category.
More than a year after failing to win the Miss World crown, Gray joined the 55th edition of the Binibining Pilipinas, which chooses the representatives of the Philippines in Miss Universe, Miss International, Miss Intercontinental, Miss Supranational, Miss Grand International and Miss Globe. She won the top crown that made her the Philippine representative to Miss Universe 2018.
Hosted by Steve Harvey and Ashley Graham, the Miss Universe 2018 coronation night will take place at the IMPACT Arena, Exhibition and Convention Center in Muang Thong Thani, Bangkok, Thailand on December 17, 2018. Gray will compete against 93 other women for the crown of South Africa’s Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters’ successor.
Including McLean, Miss Universe 2018 has seven judges for both the preliminary competition and the coronation night. The other six are Bui Simon, Iman Oubou, Janaye Ingram, Liliana Gil Valletta, Monique Lhuillier and Richelle Singson-Michael.
Almost three weeks before the Miss Universe 2018 coronation night, Gray released a single titled “We’re in This Together.” Watch the music video here:

Viva Las Vegas 2017
**I didn’t realize that I hadn’t posted my blog from Vegas in Oct when I posted the Palm Springs one!
Oops!
Viva Las Vegas! I was super excited to head to Vegas for the first time. I was not as stoked to be going for a work conference but hey, a trip is a trip right! I had applied for some funding to head to the Pediatric Critical Care Conference put on by name and was approved! I was getting a bit of money for work to cover some of the expenses of the trip and was excited to use this as an excuse to head to “Sin City”. I have plenty of travel points so figured I would save some money and book my flight on points (25,000 + 70$ in taxes) which worked out well. I would be flying with Air Canada which would get me more points and was a fairly decent airline. The conference was 2.5 days long and I had decided to stay an extra day and a half to explore the city a bit more. I was pretty excited because my boyfriend Alex was meeting me there for the last two days of the trip which would make it that much better! While I won’t go into too many boring details of the unimportant parts of the trip (like the conference.. kidding!) I will write a bit about the more fun events (Britney Spears DUH) and some of the must do/must see things if you haven’t been before!
Tuesday October 31st, 2017 I had a super hard time getting this shift off as many of my coworkers have kids and obviously wanted to take their kids out of Halloween but I managed to get the night off and was heading to Vegas on an evening flight. I found great prices on airport parking (airportreservations.com) where you get dropped off at the airline entrance and then you call when you land and they pick you up in your own car which is key. I as excited to use this service as I travel often for work and am always looking for the best/easies/most cost effective way to park at the airport. I was on an AC Rouge flight that had average service but was fine for the 4 or so hour flight. I landed in Vegas around 2200 or so and grabbed a Lyft to my hotel. The conference was at the Tropicana which is towards the end of the strip about a km away from the “Welcome to Vegas sign” and across from Excalibur. On the way there, I was immiediately entranced by all of the lights of the city. The driver was super kind and helpful and gave me some insider tips. The hotel was nice enough. The bottom levels were filled with people smoking, drinking and gambling, which is so bizarre to see inside. I did a bit of people watching before heading up to my room. . By the time I checked into the hotel and got unpacked, it was almost midnight and I was pooped! The room was quite spacious with a large bathroom and sitting area. I settled in and rested up before day 1 of the conference.
Wednesday November 1st, 2017 Like I previously mentioned, I won’t go into details about the conference since most people that would read this (if any one does) could care less about advances in Pediatric Critical Care. It is neat to note that a coworker of mine who works mostly in London was also at the conference with her coworkers. It was nice to have a familiar face to hang out with. We had a lengthy lunch break where I did some errands up the strip and met them for lunch at the food court in the MGM. The afternoon of the conference went by super slowly. Or at least that’s how it felt because I was super excited to be seeing Britney spears in the evening. An ex-coworker of mine from Sinai had moved to Vegas a few years ago and was a huge Britney Fan! I told him I was heading down for the conference and we made plans to go see Britney. I was meeting him a bit before the concert but had a few hours to kill before then. I wandered up the strip taking in all the sights. I enjoyed a bevy (on the street which is so weird to me!) while watching the Bellagio fountains which are as magical as I was told. I met up with Liam just outside of Planet Hollywood where Britney has her residency. We grabbed a drink and caught up before the show- happy hour is even more magical in Vegas with $5 glasses of red. We were in the very front for the concert, which I was super excited about. I have loved Britney since Hit me baby One more time was a hit. I had never seen her in concert when I was young so I was super pumped about having my younger year dreams come true. Before the concert, we looked at some of her old costumes that are on display in the theatre hall. It was really cool to see these famous outfits (and how tiny they are!) During the show, we made some friends and enjoyed some drinks in collector cups right in front of the stage while dancing and singing along. While it is evident that she isn’t in her early 20s anymore, her show was amazing! She entertained us (as I doubt she actually sings any of the songs) to many of her songs from all of her albums. Her costumes were very elaborate and all of her dancers were very talented. After the show, I bid Liam adieu, grabbed some dinner and headed back to my hotel room.
Thursday November 2nd, 2017 Day 2 of the conference! Today we did some break out sessions which was neat because we got to choose the topics we learned about. The best lecture I went to was by ¬¬¬Scott DeBoer and was a jeopardy game about perils and pearls of Pediatric Emergency Medicine. For lunch, we jumped on the bus and went to a Ocean One Bar and Grille that had 4.99 lunch specials! IT was crazy. You could get pretty well anything you could think of for 4.99. We enjoyed our lunches while catching up on what sessions we went to in the am and such. Similar to the day before, the afternoon seemed to take forever. This was probably because I was super excited that Alex would be in the hotel by the time the conference was done for the day. After catching up, we headed out to enjoy Vegas at night before enjoying an AMAZING sushi dinner at Kabuto. It was a traditional meal that included hand made sushi that you ate the moment the chef was done rolling it. We had an an appetizer and sake along with a variety of sashimi and sushi pieces that were chosen by the sushi chef based on our preferences. We ate a lot of tuna. The meal was delicious and worth every penny. We grabbed a Lyft back towards the main strip and enjoyed wandering around a few of the hotels. My favourites were the painted ceilings of the Venetian along with the beautiful flower displays in the Wynn. Alex loves the Aria complex and we spent a while enjoying the complex. We both love NYC (as evident in one of my last posts) so we spent quite some time wandering around New York New York before heading back to the hotel for the night. On our way up to our room, we grabbed our fresh, warm (and free!) cookies that are provided to each guest before Alex tried his luck on some slots. While I am not a bigger gambler, it is pretty neat to watch others gamble. I wish I knew how to play the card games better so I would enjoy it more.
Friday November 3rd, 2017 Today was the last day of the conference! Alex did some exploring and errand running while I spent the morning in the Conference. Of course it was the best breakfast (breakfast burritos) and they ran out by the time I got there! There wasn’t a ton of new learning this morning but it was still a great experience. I made my way to the Cosmo where we were having lunch. We had heard about the amazing buffet with bottomless drinks at the Wicked Spoon and were really looking forward to it. For $50 each, we had 2 hours at the buffet with unlimited Mimosas, Bloody Marys and beers. The food was absolutely amazing. There were some very “gourmet” choices along with a wide variety of breakfast and lunch foods. We definitely ate way too much but were very glad we checked it out. After being sufficiently stuffed, we wandered down the strip and checked out some of the hotels we hadn’t yet. We visited the Flamingoes at Flamingo and enjoyed the Bellagio Fountains again. I loved the botanical conservatory in the Bellagio! It was so beautiful! We wandered around the Park promenade before heading back to New York New York for the Zumanity Show! We knew we wanted to see a Cirque show but couldn’t decide which one. The gentleman said that while O! is super popular, his favourite was Zuamnity. We are pretty breezy and so though, hey why not! The show did not disappoint! It was pretty bizarre and almost raunchy at times but we both really enjoyed it. There was some awesome acrobatics and hilarious costumes. If there is a sky wheel in a city, I HAVE to ride it! I love seeing cities from all different vantage points. I prefer to see the city at sunset or later since the lights usually make the city look that much more magical. The High Roller is the largest observation wheel with 28 pods that can hold 40 passengers each. It is 550 feet tall. Alex and I were lucky enough to have the whole pod to ourselves which was super fun. The 30-minute or so ride was awesome and gave us the best view of the city. I took tons of photos (shocking!) of all of the amazing lights and colours of the city. After the Wheel, we stopped and sat at one of the smaller fountains in the area and grabbed some pizza at Flour and Barley and a beer.
Since we were heading home after our day trip tomorrow, we made sure to pack up and get prepped for a busy last day (and a very early morning!)
Saturday November 4th, 2017 After about 4 hours of sleep (so much to do, so little time), we were up bright and early to get picked up for our guided tour of the Grand Canyon. We were being picked up around 0600 en route to the Grand Canyon. We took a big tour bus filled with tourists ont his adventure because we figured it was easier than renting our own car. I think this is definitely something that can be done on your own and it allows for different stops along the way. We are glad we took the bus, since neither one of us felt much like driving several hours each way into the desert. Our tour guide took us onto Highway 93 and discussed info about the three main cities in the Valley and about the mountains all around us. Sadly, I slept the majority of the drive so didn’t really get a great deal of learning in . I did learn that a lot of the land in the desert (especially the Mojave) used to be ranches. We drove through Boulder City and over the Hoover Dam. We got a quick look of Lake Mead as well. We also saw a few Joshua trees on the route which are pretty cool. We took Route 66 and learned about Seligman (town that was the inspiration for the movie Cars) before stopping at the Rodeo Restaurant in William, Ariona. This was the home of the Grand Canyon Train. We enjoyed a decent buffet lunch. After a bit of stretching (sitting for hours on end in a bus is challenging!) We headed back into the bus for the final bit of driving before entering the Grand Canyon National Park. As a bit of history, the Grand Canyon is a steep-sided canyon that is carved by the Colorado River. It is about at an elevation of about 800 m and is 446 km long, 29 km wide and 1,857 meters deep. It has been formed over millions of years from the cutting down of the small branches of the Colorado river and the retreatment of the cliffs. The canyon sees about 5 million visitors per year with the majority seeing the South Rim (Which is what we did). While we didn’t see much, there is a vast ecosystem in the Canyon and surrounding area. There are 5 of the 7 different life zones found in the Grand Canyon National park. The Park is home to many about 80 different mammals (most rodents and bats), 48 bird species and 41 reptile species. We did some birds but sadly, that was it. When we arrived at the Grand Canyon, we took the typical photo in front of the sign before making our way on the 2.1 mile walk. I was really taken aback at how big and beautiful the canyon was! Photos and videos do not do it justice. It truly is breath taking. I think we (lets be real, I) took 300 photos that all looked the same! The different rock colours and layers are super neat! We caught a few glimpses of the Colorado river wayyy down below. We learned more about the history and geology of the park and the rocks. We spent a couple hours at the Canyon, wandering around the path. We checked out one of the hotels and its gift shop (of course) and grabbed our necessary magnets. We saw an ice cream store, so we grabbed a scoop and enjoyed the view. We hopped back on the bus a bit before sunset. We had quite the drive back but it was a beautiful one! We saw the sunset over the desert, which was just amazing! Dinner was tacos at this random (but delicious) stop on the way beside a gas station called _ We headed back towards the city which was an enjoyable ride. We didn’t stop at the Hoover Dam (which I was slightly disappointed about) but, we did get to see it and it was definitely way bigger than had thought. We arrived back into the city in the late evening. Since we were dropped off at the hotel, we jumped in a Lyft to the airport. Both Alex and I were exhausted and I was less than thrilled with the security staff at the airport. I am not a new traveller but felt like I was being spoken to like a child, which is not something I enjoy (especially when I am tired and a bit cranky). After a rather lengthy security line, we made our way to the Maple Leaf lounge for some pre “Red Eye” showers, snacks and bevvys. Our flight home was uneventful (especially considering we both snoozed the majority of the way home). My first trip to Vegas was definitely memorable! I think that we got a lot accomplished and saw the majority of the things that I wanted to see. There were still a few shows and hotels that I would like to check out the next time and would love to just have a hang-out by the pool day. All is all, I definitely see the allure of Vegas. I think if you are big into drinking/partying and gambling, it is the place for you however there is TONS to do for everyone. I think I could’ve walked up and down the strip for the days, checking out different hotel lobbies and attractions. The next time, I would ideally prefer to stay more in the middle of the strip but do think that the Tropicana was fine for how much time I spent in the hotel.
*again, photos are not in any specific order, not too sure how to fix that :(

LAS VEGAS, NV – Some fighters are just special.
At the MGM Grand conference center in Las Vegas, Brooklyn’s Teofimo Lopez (16-0, 12 KOs) made history by becoming the youngest undisputed champion in boxing history.
Lopez surprised the boxing world by not only defeating but out boxing Vasiliy Lomachnko (14-2, 10 KOs) over 12 rounds to become the undisputed Lightweight champion.
The fight began cautiously for Lomachenko as Lopez was able to establish his strategy of utilizing his jab immediately.
The young Lopez's speed was used to offset the Ukrainians movement and ability to attack on the inside.
Lopez’s usage of what Hall-of-Famer Shane Mosley called ‘power boxing’ kept Lomachenko from committing to a sustained attack through the first half of the fight.
With Lomachenko’s offense was on layaway, Lopez was able to win rounds by applying pressure and landing punches to the body and up top.
Lomachenko was able to land straight left hands occasionally, but it wasn’t until the eighth round that he began to attack Lopez at a more active pace.
The fight’s momentum began to swing in favor of the Ukrainian, as Lopez seemed to be slowing down.
However, any moment of success that Lomachenko found would be countered by a returning attack from Lopez.
Lomachenko’s strategy of taking Lopez into ‘deep waters’ seemed to be working, but he may have needed 15 instead of 12 rounds.
The 12th and final round saw both men trade punches in the most exciting round of the fight.
After 12 rounds, Lopez was rewarded with a unanimous decision with scores of 119-109, 117-111, and 116-112.
Lopez was able to throw 659 punches landing 183 at a 28 percent connect rate. Lomachenko landed 141 out of 321 total punches at a 44 percent connect rate.
The victory from Lopez cannot be understated.
He outboxed a fighter that was heavily favored to win with leaps and bounds of more experience as an amateur and against world champions as a professional.
Lopez has shaken up the boxing world and at 23 should now enter pound-for-pound rankings as one of the best fighters in the world.
Lopez and his team spoke the fight itself and the victory into existence by having a tremendous amount of self-belief that only the most elite pugilists exhibit.
Whether he decides to move up in weight or defend his Lightweight titles, Lopez now has the boxing world at the palm of his hand.
The co-main event featured a battle between two Junior Welterweight contenders in Oklahoma City’s Alex Saucedo and South El Monte, California’s Arnold Barboza Jr.
Barboza Jr. was able to outland and brawled with Saucedo through all 10 rounds. The California native was able to keep the fight at mid-range and on the inside, allowing him to land hooks on Saucedo, who needed more space to work.
Saucedo, however, never gave any indication of seceding to Barboza Jr. as he scored a knockdown in the seventh round, landing a left hook.
Initially, the referee thought the knockdown was a slip, but in between rounds, it was overruled due to Las Vegas’ new replay rule.
The final rounds were action-packed, with both fighters exchanging. Barboza Jr. got the better of the exchanges and earned a unanimous decision victory.
The judges delivered scores of 96-93 and 97-92 in favor of Barboza Jr.
The 28-year old Barboza Jr. has now established himself as a top contender at Junior Welterweight. He will now look to continue to climb the division’s top 10 to earn an eventual title opportunity.
Opening the main card on ESPN was rising Super Middleweight prospect Edgar Berlanga (15-0, 15 KOs).
The Puerto Rican took on veteran Lanell Bellows (20-6-3, 13 KOs) in a scheduled eight-round bout.
Berlanga was looking to go more rounds against Bellows, who previously had never been stopped in his career.
However, Berlanga’s punching power proved too much for Bellows to handle as a left hook in the first stumbled him and a right hand put a cut over his left eye.
Berlanga unloaded against the ropes, and before he could be knocked down, the referee stopped the bout. The fight was stopped at the 1:19 mark of the first round.
The power-punching Puerto Rican’s first-round knockout streak extends to 15. Berlanga’s power at this time seems to be otherworldly, as a fighter with 28 fights who had never been stopped couldn’t last a round with him.
