notes: alright so this was long. almost 4k words if Im right but its cause I had a lot I wanted to say. This episode is a lil more depressing then the rest since I spoke a bit on loss & trauma. I hope you don’t mind that and still enjoy reading it 🤍 it does end on a very positive note though :>

such is the course of life. So with bared teeth and a tense jaw you have no choice but to march on. Abby's downfall came in the form of persistent nightmares where she would see her dad. Every year near his death’s anniversary she would become a shell of herself and in those weak moments she leaped back into old habits and sought out comfort in old connections. Until the consequences of those actions caught up to her and she paid double the price in fallen friendships and blackmail

In grief your judgment is clouded. Your anger takes the best of you but see, the world doesn’t owe you an apology.You know, you don’t get over a loved one's death. You just learn to live with it. Live with that and every other hard bitter truth. And that's what Abby learned to do.

Abby enjoyed her routine and the way she had neatly organized every aspect of her life. She maintained a perfect balance of secrecy and exposure and kept everything under wraps, emotions included. Her manager did occasionally usher her to post more scandalous things since she was about to open an onlyfans but abby remained adamant that her crowd would find out about it without her saying so much as a word

And Abby normally would agree without giving much thought into it. Nora once had called her community strap and she hated how well that nickname fit. When the question came though Abby found herself putting on her black hat back on and lowering it enough that the shadow would cover her eyes,rejecting the expecting girl curtly and went back to her sets with more force than usual. Because nothing today went “as it usually fucking would”

Most importantly I like that depending on where you are in life you will take a very different message from this game, the purpose of revenge, forgiveness or acceptance. Or maybe something else that I am not in that stage to grasp yet. Highly recommend you guys play it as well-

Ellie and Abby had a weird relationship. Abby no longer hated her but she didn’t like her either, however being in the same community and city meant you would have to be involved one way with one another thus she took the smart, professional decision to keep things civil. It was her managers request really, no. It was a demand actually but she followed through. So while they occasionally would post a pic whenever they hang out, Abby wanted nothing more to do with her unless necessary and she believed that the feelings were mutual.

However when she saw Ellie take notice of you the way she had something snapped. Abby had the privilege of being in Ellie “close friends” story and saw the upcoming comment of her admiring you and she got jealous. so she had to pull something. Something to keep you focused on her.

Her insecurities always got the best of her in times like this and when it happened she was irrational. She decided buying you that beloved statue that you mentioned more than once on your streams would send the message clearly

more silence. Abby chewed on her lip and rubbed her neck. She was sitting on her gaming chair ready to film and she was hot and ready enough which she feared Isaacs boring tone would turn her off and would ruin her plan

“It has to be behind a paywall. Abby this is business and even though I don’t want to ruin whatever fairytale shit you are living in you can’t keep doing whatever you want, you have a name and”

she put he phone on speaker and left it on her desk. she walked to her kitchen, made a coffee and filled alices bowl with food. when she went back to the room Isaac was still talking

“alright so how much should I charge?”

“400. The way you usually do”

“400?! There’s no way she will pay that- She doesn’t even know it will be sent only to her” she protested and he groaned

“200?” she asked

“250 and that's final” and he finally hung up. She smiled and once she was back and ready she started filming.

it started slow and she didn’t really intend to go too far. just enough to give you a taste of her. She had a very clear image of you in her head. Eventually though her thoughts drifted to you between her thighs, on your knees and ready to taste her. Almost as if in another timeline, she had to visit a professional on matters she deemed unimportant, and if they ever mattered to her, she now forgot why.

Abbys therapist was a woman cunning and smart and could decode everything about Abby. They had been working for a year. That was the longest that Abby ever stuck with the same therapist before running away in anger at the lack of progress. She was unsure if this one helped, but she did find herself accepting her anger and coming to terms with it. She would still cry about it and she would always stay spiteful to her peers that still had their parents close.

“I’m happy that you seem more willing to open up your heart again Abby. I have to ask though. Are you sure this isn’t a hopeful trauma bond that you are seeking to create?”

“No, definitely not. Sure I liked that she seemed more insightful and all but no, I just like her for all the other aspects” Her therapist took note of that and Abby felt insecure in herself and her decisions once again

Abby, despite of everyone's assumptions, was in fact shy and a little awkward and when Mel & Owen were at these parties it made her a lot more tense than she already was. She saw the couple in a corner kiss and then talk with others and eventually Mel would glare at Abby.

With a long sigh she grabbed her phone to check your profile. you had a story next to the statue she got you and she felt her cheeks heat up in excitement the room finally going quiet as her focus was directed at your photo. She slid up to respond to the image and was interrupted by someone getting a little too close to her personal space

“So you know her?” Ellie asked. Abby looked at the short girl and held back a scoff

“Kind of. We occasionally talk”

Ellie nod and looked around and then back at Abby

“Ugh…do you perhaps know if she is..single? or lesbian?”Abby sat on that and realized you actually had never explicitly announced your sexuality which made her reconsider every damn thing she did so far. Then came the next question.

It was adorable. She watched the videos again and again of you showing her the statue which she didn't really care about but just your excited voice was enough for her to stay hooked on those three, 4 second clips.

A breathy chuckle escaped Abbys lips as her heart swelled at the sight of your texts. She noticed in the short span of talking to you that you tended to speak a lot more and a lot faster when it came to your interests. Without filter too and she liked that.

And Abby rushed out of the bathroom and went straight to Manny to ask for her coat and car keys.

She said morphing her face into a pained expression and grabbed her leather jacket the minute he passed it over to her. She had never seen herself fold so fast over a girl and she was not in the mental state to acknowledge how embarrassing all of this was on her behalf

Things were just easier after that. She noticed you relax up and get bolder, responding to her posts more often and occasionally sending a text without waiting for her to post a story which she admitted to have started doing a lot more often for the sole purpose of giving you the push you needed to talk to her. You would often hang out at each other's streams and she quickly found out that when it came to humor, it was identical to one another and would throw jabs at each other that kept the chat entertained and Isaac pleased because your audience had new things to speculate. Abby was public with her friendships without disclosing anything more which left her audience running in circles and trying to pry more private information. This whole back and forth with you now reignited the audience's spark and due to how new it was, everyone seemed supportive and excited. In the back of her mind, Abby feared that this would eventually prove to be difficult to manage but she forced herself to stop rushing things in her head.

At the end of the day, so far you two were just friends who talked and, well, had probably simultaneously jacked off at the thought of one another without ever addressing that. That was another thing Abby chose not to speak about despite the fact that she would obsessively check on who purchased her sets to come to the sad realization that she had in fact scared you off her onlyfans.

She wasn’t sure if all of those were things she was supposed to feel, after all she had never taken it slow with anyone. Abby didn't travel much. Not outside the country at least. She considered your messages and tried not to delude herself into a double meaning. Were you asking for an invite or were you inviting her ? Perhaps you were just venting. She was Picking at a thin layer of unstuck plastic from her table and toyed with it until it snapped. Either was she now knew you were not seeing someone and she could make a move guilt free

There wasn’t really a discreet way to go about this and if she was going to suggest it, you would need at least a heads up to rearrange your schedule.

“Like I said. We both have those two weeks available and it was about time I took a little trip. I could talk my manager into believing this is for work”

-Oh sure. If you want we can do a collab as well so that you don't take a loss in revenue and stuff

She reassured and felt her ego inflate at how easily you seemed to be put at ease with her words. She couldn’t know for sure if her attraction was romantic or just sexual but she sure as hell loved the way you two aligned.

You spoke for a while and with winter break only a month away you already settled on the dates.

“I have to go to the gym now but I’ll send you a text once I get the tickets so that you know what time Ill be there

Abby put her phone away and for a few minutes she would occasionally laugh, softly, while imagining what it would be like. She was nervous and with delight she noticed that she finally regained that spark in her where she had a crush and wanted to speak about her instead of statistics, trauma or finances. she felt good

“Anastasia, a maintenance worker for Acadia National Park, lives off Main Street in an apartment building owned by Mount Desert 365, a nonprofit whose mission is to combat “community deterioration” in the town of Mount Desert, which includes the village of Northeast Harbor.

Between 2012 and 2022, the town’s population shrunk by 20 percent while the seasonal vacancy rate — homes left empty by summer residents or houses converted into short-term rentals — grew from 46 to 60 percent. (Bar Harbor recently began regulating short-term rentals; the island’s three other towns have not.)

The median price for a home in Mount Desert last year was nearly a million dollars, doubling in just five years.

Mount Desert 365, watching these changes unfold, began purchasing property several years ago with hopes of building year-round workforce housing — typically property whose sale or rental price is lowered below market rates and set aside for people with incomes near the area median.

One of those plots is the 0.9-acre lot on the corner of Manchester and Neighborhood, where the group plans to build a six-unit subdivision called “Heel Way.”

Anastasia got a job with the National Park Service and is now one of the workers who ensures Acadia doesn’t decay under the weight of the more than 4 million visits it receives each year, visits that fuel the local recreation-based economy: hotels, campgrounds, restaurants, lobster pounds, and bike and kayak rentals. In the summer he puts new roofs on park buildings, fixes bathrooms and replaces fixtures. While many park workers leave the island during the winter, he stays on, rehabbing the interiors of park buildings.

During “the season,” which runs from May to October, cars and trucks pour over the bridge, carrying workers who make it possible for Mount Desert Island to serve as a summer haven for some of America’s richest people.

Come nightfall, those workers go back over the bridge, unable to find or afford housing on the island.

Anastasia gets to stay, but only because he found an apartment set aside for working-class people, and because he didn’t have pets and everyone in front of him on the waiting list did. He knows he’s lucky to have a place in town, but it’s a rental, and he dreams of one day buying a home and making it his own.

“I’m holding on for Heel Way,” Anastasia said. “But it’s not everybody’s dream to see housing there.”

Since the start, the project has been the subject of great debate, spurring petitions for and against. After months of public hearings, it was approved by the town planning board late last year in a 3-1 vote. But soon after, a group of seven wealthy summer residents sued the town, arguing the six-unit project was too dense.

A judge struck down all their arguments; undeterred, they appealed the court’s decision last month, delaying the project and costing the town, so far, at least $55,000 in legal fees. The Maine Supreme Judicial Court won’t hear the case until February at the earliest.

The project proponents say the island desperately needs housing and year-round residents, and the Heel Way subdivision would be an important, if small, step. Many see the lawsuit as an example of a NIMBY (“Not In My Backyard”) attitude that has limited housing development across the country.

Opponents, meanwhile, say they support workforce housing but think the Heel Way project is flawed, with too many units on too small a plot — out of character for the neighborhood.

The debate comes amid a number of recent votes by Maine communities to stop affordable housing projects — distinct from workforce housing but with a similar goal — including a 107-unit proposal in Cumberland and a 45-unit project in Kingfield earlier this year.

What makes the fight over Heel Way unique is the small size of the project — just six units — and the way it has been stymied not by local voters but by a lawsuit from seven wealthy people who only live in the area part-time.

The debate pits millionaire summer residents not only against the town planning board, but against billionaire brothers Mitchell and Steven Rales, who have funded the effort to build housing for working-class people.

As Maine grapples with a housing shortage exacerbated by the pandemic, the fight over Heel Way shows how efforts to address the crisis can be both buoyed and stymied by the same force: private individuals with massive wealth.

Across the United States, the refrain is the same: There isn’t enough housing. One recent analysis found that the U.S. is short 4.5 million homes, while Maine, a state study found, needs to build 84,000 homes by 2030 to make up its deficit.

One way to address the crisis, experts say, is by changing zoning laws, which often serve as a way for communities to forbid cheaper, denser housing in favor of single-family homes. Maine has taken steps to loosen zoning policies in recent years, including instituting a law in 2022 that required municipalities to adjust ordinances to allow greater density and accessory dwelling units on single-family lots.

A 2018 study of Mount Desert Island’s housing needs found that, conservatively, there was demand for an extra 125 to 300 workforce housing units, and the island could “easily” absorb 100 to 200 below-market-rate senior housing units by 2023.

But for many who live and work on the island, the 2018 housing market seems like a different world. The pandemic exacerbated the trend of people converting year-round housing into summer homes and short-term rentals, taking housing off the market and driving up prices. The price of a median home in Mount Desert, according to the Maine State Housing Authority, was just under $450,000 in 2018. By 2023 it had doubled to $903,000.

It’s become common for businesses large and small on the island to provide, and sometimes build, housing for employees, adding costs to businesses that are sometimes only open half the year.

Earlier this year, Witham Family Hotels opened a three-story housing complex that will house 84 seasonal workers in Bar Harbor. The nonprofit Friends of Acadia has begun construction on housing for eight seasonal National Park Service workers in Seal Harbor, another village in the town of Mount Desert. (Last year about 30 percent of Acadia’s seasonal positions went unfulfilled, in large part because potential workers struggled to find a place to stay.)

Susan Allen, an island native who owns the Harbour Cottage Inn in Southwest Harbor, bought a house three doors from her own home to house four of her seasonal employees. In the winter she rents it to a friend.

“I don’t like taking any year-round housing out of stock,” Allen said. “But it’s a slippery slope because if I can’t get staff, I can’t run my business, and then I’d have to leave.”

For Jackson Laboratory of Bar Harbor, the housing shortage represents an existential threat.

When Lon Cardon, the CEO of Jackson Laboratory, which employs 1,500 people in Bar Harbor, Ellsworth and Bangor, talked to a meeting of the Mount Desert Association of Summer Residents in Northeast Harbor last month, he described the integral role his lab’s research has played in fighting and treating diseases.

Then he turned to housing.

Cardon told them that when he took the job and moved to the island in November 2021, he couldn’t find a place to live. (Cardon earns more than $1 million a year at the lab, tax records show.)

The struggle is even greater for the lab’s rank and file. The laboratory built 24 rental units for its employees, which Cardon said didn’t move the needle. If he had been in charge at the time, he’s not sure he would have approved the project, he said. After all, building housing diverts money from research.

The question of housing prompts an even larger one for Cardon and his lab, the largest private employer on the island: “Do we stay here?”

Mount Desert 365, the group behind the Heel Way project, started because of cruise ships.

Sitting in her office overlooking the harbor, executive director Kathy Miller recounted her group’s origins: In 2016, a relatively small cruise ship dropped anchor and disgorged vacationers into the town. Some saw this landfall as a portent of a future that revolved around selling tchotchkes to tourists. Meetings and debates followed. Eventually, the town of Mount Desert passed an ordinance that barred cruise ships from letting passengers disembark. Other towns on the island followed suit (except for Bar Harbor, where the battle rages on).

During those meetings, many business owners said the day the cruise ship came to town was their best in years. And so two things became clear, Miller recalled: This town doesn’t want cruise ships, but local businesses need more support to stay solvent. And the founders of Mount Desert 365 thought the best way to do that was to increase the year-round population.

The founders included Mitchell and Steven Rales, the brothers who launched the Danaher corporation in 1984. The company is now a publicly traded “global life sciences and diagnostics innovator” worth $197 billion. The brothers, who have an estimated combined net worth of nearly $15 billion, own millions worth of property in the town of Mount Desert through various LLCs, including the $19 million dollar Rockefeller mansion that Mitchell Rales tore down and rebuilt.

Mount Desert 365 launched in 2017 with $6 million in funding, according to tax records. Shortly after, the group bought the Heel Way property, and eventually purchased nine others. By the end of 2023, the group owned $9.7 million in property but had just $131,197 in savings and cash, according to its most recent federal tax filings.

The final design for Heel Way, approved by the planning board, shows a lot with two duplexes, two single-family houses and a five-bay garage, which would be converted into storage space. Each unit has a two-car driveway and a deck.

The original plan was for the houses to cost between $250,000 and $275,000 — around a quarter of the median price in town. But Miller notes that estimate is now years old, and the longer the project is delayed, the higher the price is likely to rise.

Units will be sold to families who qualify for mortgages but don’t make more than a certain percentage of Maine’s median income, depending on family size, Miller said. A family of four would be eligible if they earned less than 160 percent of Maine’s household median income of $73,733, which would be $118,000 a year.

The Heel Way renderings show small houses with columns and dormer windows, bracketed by lush trees and well-manicured hedges. One shows an adult holding a child’s hand as they approach a house. This is what proponents envision: young families with parents doing essential work and children attending the local school, a short walk away.

“This village has lost so much. This village used to be vibrant in the wintertime and now it’s dead,” Miller said.

“And if you don’t want shops that are boarded up all winter because there’s nobody there, then you’ve got to have people.”

Opposition to the project has been fierce. In the fall of 2022, a petition was signed by 205 residents who “support workforce housing” but oppose the project. They argue the housing units would be too cramped, and warn about traffic that would hurt children riding their bikes between the tennis and yacht clubs.

They worry there wouldn’t be enough space for all the stuff that sits in Maine garages and sheds: grills, snowblowers and boats. They argue the character of the neighborhood would change, and residents wouldn’t be able to build equity because the sale to the next qualified buyer would be capped by price restrictions.

To many opponents, the main problem is the number of units. Under the old density ordinance, six units would not have been allowed on a lot the size of Heel Way. But under the updated ordinance, developers can use a “density bonus” if the area is designated as workforce housing.

Many said they’d have no problem with three units on the property. Why did it have to be six?

“The state needs as many as it can get,” Miller said. “Our mission is to bring back a more robust year-round population, and so we are working within the ordinances. We’re not asking for any special permission. This is what the ordinances allow. So why not do it?”

During one planning board meeting, Miller made a presentation showing there already were several other lots in the village with similar or greater housing density, calculations the planning board cited in its approval of the project.

In addition, a basic fact of housing construction is that greater density lowers costs.

“There is an economy of scale,” Miller said.

Barbara Ryerson, whose husband is one of the residents who sued the town, was involved in submitting the petition against the project. In a March 2023 letter to the planning board, she wrote that she and other neighbors had “put ourselves in the shoes of the residents” and had concerns: “We want to ensure the workers in Northeast Harbor and the town of Mount Desert are able to obtain affordable housing and live comfortably, safely, and not packed in so densely.”

But the density doesn’t bother Anastasia, nor Gloria Kunje, who for months traveled between her home in Connecticut and Bar Harbor while working at the College of the Atlantic because she couldn’t find a place to live on the island. Now a special education teacher living in the same Mount Desert 365 project as Anastasia, Kunje wonders how opponents came to their conclusions.

“That’s not an issue at all,” she said of the density. “When those arguments are made, are they actually asking the people who would love to live there?”

One common argument at public hearings, almost always prefaced with a declaration of support for workforce housing in general, was that tenants filling up six units could bring a dozen new cars to the corner, which sits on Manchester Road.

In one June meeting, Mara Lehrman, a summer neighbor on Manchester Road, noted her “primary concern” was the safety of children biking, asking if MD 365 shouldn’t focus its efforts on its property “where it would not disturb the wonderful independence that children have in Northeast Harbor to bike without the fear of getting hit by cars.”

Traffic engineer Diana Morabito shared the results of a traffic survey done by the Department of Transportation that found Manchester and Neighborhood roads had a peak of 84 vehicles per hour in busy July, with daily volumes ranging from 550 to 880 vehicles per day. Her study found that the site would add four to five more cars per hour.

“That’s one extra car coming or going every 12 to 15 minutes,” Morabito said. “That’s not a lot of additional traffic.”

Proponents also noted that the project’s driveway exits onto Neighborhood Road, not Manchester Road, which is the road well-traveled by children.

In fact, Mount Desert 365 altered the plans in response to neighbor concerns, moving the driveway from its original spot on Manchester Road. Then they moved the driveway again so it wasn’t aligned with the driveway across the road, because the residents of that house — who lived there only part-time — were worried about headlights shining on their house at night.

Bill Hanley, an architect and chair of the Mount Desert Planning Board, said part of the controversy stemmed from Mount Desert 365’s “unwavering position” on the number of units.

“It’s a lot on a little,” he said, noting that putting that many units on a small lot in a “single-family residential area in the village of Northeast Harbor” is “going to stir up the hornet’s nest.”

Hanley was the one member of the four-member planning board who found the project did not meet the town’s criteria requiring “compatibility” with the surrounding area.

Meredith Randolph, a planning board member who resigned in July, said Mount Desert altered its designs a great deal in response to community feedback. In her opinion the planning board process worked — but it wasn’t enough.

“We got it back, redesigned to a more compatible, more aesthetically pleasing design, with the town recognizing a number of people’s reasonable requests for adjustments to the design,” Randolph said. “But they still took it to court.”

In November, seven wealthy residents sued the town, arguing that the planning board defined “lot” incorrectly, calculated allowable housing density incorrectly, failed to apply the correct open space requirements, and should have required a performance bond.

In June, Justice Thomas McKeon of Maine’s Business and Consumer Court struck down all of the plaintiffs’ arguments. The group appealed the decision, and the case awaits a decision from the high court.

Opponents often ask why Mount Desert 365 can’t be more like another housing nonprofit, Island Housing Trust. The group has converted 49 homes — either purchased or acquired via donation — into workforce housing, said Marla O’Byrne, the Island Housing Trust executive director. It also built a workforce housing development of six single-family homes and two duplexes closer to the head of the island.

Island Housing Trust depends on donors, among them the conservative legal activist Leonard Leo, and the Law and Order television series creator Dick Wolf, as well as some of the Northeast Harbor residents suing the town.

The group has avoided the kind of controversy Mount Desert has found itself in with the Heel Way project. That’s because it has largely converted existing single-family homes into workforce housing, and has built in more remote parts of the island — away from the donor class.

“Those were not areas where the people that appealed this decision would necessarily even travel,” said Mount Desert town manager Durlin Lunt.

At one point, Mount Desert 365 proposed that Island Housing Trust take over the Heel Way Project. But Island Housing Trust turned down the offer, O’Byrne said.

“My board wanted to have more input into what was done, how it was done, and may have come to the same conclusions, but they didn’t just want to implement another organization’s project,” she said.

Some opposition is also connected to who is funding the project and what they plan next. Mount Desert 365 has other properties around town, and there is concern that all of them will be developed with a similar density.

“I’m going to address the elephant in the room,” said summer resident Betsy Kelly during a March 2023 planning board meeting, prefacing her comments by saying, as almost all opponents did, that she “fully supported the building of affordable housing in Northeast Harbor.”

“I’ve never seen a master plan from Mount Desert 365,” Kelly said. “The pockets are so deep, and the power and the control that MD 365 has is, or perceived to have, is very, very great.”

Several of the seven summer residents who sued to stop the project own summer homes down Smallidge Point Road, which begins a few hundred feet away from the Heel Way site, next to a sign that reads: “Private Road. Owners and Guests Only.”

The road is named after Smallidge Point, a small peninsula that forms the western shore of Gilpatrick Cove, ending near a private wooden bridge leading to the Northeast Harbor Fleet, the area’s yacht club.

Stuart Janney III, one of the plaintiffs, lives down this road and has summered in Northeast Harbor for most of his life. Janney is the chairman emeritus of Bessemer Trust, a private wealth management firm that oversees more than $200 billion, as well as a director of the New York Racing Association. Janney owned Orb, the 2013 Kentucky Derby winner.

He owns a summer residence assessed at $3.7 million that is located a quarter-mile from the Heel Way site. He and his wife have also donated tens of thousands to Island Housing Trust, according to the group’s annual reports.

In March 2023, Janney and his wife wrote to the planning board, explaining that Mount Desert 365 had invited them to an event in which the group laid out its plans. The dinner led the pair to conclude that the group’s approach was “ill conceived and not based on facts or analysis.”

“We were not alone,” they wrote.

They said if the Heel Way project were developed “as proposed,” it would “have a profound negative impact on the neighborhood.”

They went on to say the group has “underperformed with past projects” and “has never stated a research-based case for what they propose.”

During a recent phone call, Janney declined to answer many of The Monitor’s questions on the record. But he stressed his desire for a vibrant year-round community.

“We all agree that we want the town to be more vibrant, to not have the lights out in the winter, to have a better workforce environment, to protect the school from going out of business,” Janney said.

“And I would also say that nobody in the community that I have anything to do with has ever had any problem or worry about the fact that we are a community of year-round residents and summer residents. We wouldn’t want it any other way. That’s what we grew up with. Some of my best friends are year-round residents.”

“Housing is a real need,” he added. “But the worst thing in the world for Northeast (Harbor) would have been for this project to go forward and have it be a complete failure.”

Lynne Wheat, another plaintiff, also owns property on Smallidge Point Road.

In October 2023, she wrote to Hanley to express concerns about “too many people and too many cars,” noting that “some child is going to get thrown off their bike, or worse.”

She said she feared the project would serve as a template for Mount Desert 365’s other properties, warning, “We won’t recognize our town in 10 years unless the ordinances are revised.”

Wheat’s Northeast Harbor home, which Decor Maine once called a “classic cottage,” is assessed at $5.2 million. Wheat owns the home, called “Mainstay,” with Allen D. Wheat, the former chief of Credit Suisse First Boston, who was fired in 2001 shortly before the firm agreed to pay $100 million to resolve a federal investigation into alleged abuses related to initial public offerings during the dotcom bubble.

Two other nearby parcels of Mount Desert property worth a combined $2.7 million and owned by separate LLCs have tax bills listed as “care of Lynne Wheat.” The tax bills for all these properties associated with Wheat are sent to a $96 million Palm Beach mansion owned by billionaire Thomas Peterffy. In 2018, Peterffy and Wheat made a donation to an auction for Friends of Acadia in the form of a dinner for 16 “at their new residence” in the tallest residential tower in the Western Hemisphere on Park Avenue in New York.

In an email, Lynn Wheat declined to comment.

Lamont Harris, a plaintiff whose great-grandfather Henry Flagler co-founded Standard Oil with John D. Rockefeller, also owns a property on Smallidge Point Road. Harris’ summer home is assessed at $4.2 million. He also owns a $5 million house in West Palm Beach, Fla.

He signed a letter, with several opponents and other plaintiffs, that said the project was “not consistent with neighboring homesteads” and “anyone driving around this project location can see that the homes in this section of Northeast Harbor have an abundance of acreage and open space around each single-family home.”

The Monitor was unable to contact Harris.

Throughout the process, he has mostly let the group’s attorney, Grady Burns, do the talking.

“This proposed density is substantially larger than any comparable parcel in the area,” Burns said during a June 2023 planning board meeting. “These standards exist not just to make us feel good about the aesthetics of our neighborhoods, they are to protect the interests of property owners who have invested already in this community with the understanding that their neighborhoods, their communities, will change in a way that is measured, that is consistent with their expectations.”

Marc Cannon and his wife Ann, both plaintiffs, bought a house in 2004 for $400,000 that sits about 100 yards from the project. It was recently assessed at $562,000.

“Everybody wants the town to prosper in the winter and everybody wants it to be successful, but you’ve got to be thoughtful about it,” Cannon said during a phone interview, adding that “the lot sat empty for four or five years and 365 didn’t even keep it up. They weren’t mowing the lawn. It looked terrible.” (Mount Desert 365 didn’t mow where the former residents had a vegetable garden, but the group did mow the lawn next to the house, Miller said, adding that she often did the mowing.)

Cannon declined to answer other questions on the record. Last year he retired from his position as chief customer experience officer for AutoNation Inc., a $6 billion publicly traded automotive retailer.

Cannon’s sister, Melissa Cannon Guzy, is also a plaintiff and owns a $1 million property close by. Guzy is the co-founder and managing partner of Arbor Ventures, a Singapore-based venture capital fund. She is also on Jackson Laboratory’s board of trustees.

The plaintiff who lives closest to the project site is Joseph T. Ryerson III.

Ryerson and his wife Barbara (who is not listed in the lawsuit but was involved in circulating the petition) own a home with a driveway that runs parallel to the lot’s property line.

Joseph T. Ryerson III is the great-great-grandson of Joseph T. Ryerson, whose company supplied steel to Ford when it began manufacturing cars. Today it’s traded on the New York Stock Exchange and worth more than $600 million. The Ryersons’ Northeast Harbor home is assessed at $842,500, and they also own a $1.1 million home in Massachusetts.

Ryerson has focused his opposition on the minutiae of the Heel Way project, emails sent to the planning board show, including questions about the capacity of the sewer line. In one email he noted the project could cause “a major disruption for present sewer easement holders, not to mention significant environmental damage to an area historically natural and unspoiled in appearance, enjoyed by present easement holders for walks, and being a pathway to and fro for deer, fox, felines, turkeys and others.”

The Ryersons declined to comment when a reporter knocked on their door last month.

Nearby, in the driveway of a house directly across Manchester Road from the Heel Way project, Bill Newlin Jr. had a different take. Explaining that his parents owned the home (assessed at $3.2 million) and that his extended family has summered in the village for decades, he said his family had no problem with the project.

“We’re very cognizant of the need for affordable housing,” Newlin said. “What are we going to do, oppose it? That’s not a good look.”

Last year, Ned Herrington, a lifelong summer resident of Northeast Harbor who recently started at Stanford Law School, started a petition in support of the Heel Way subdivision after reading the petition against the development, which he thought “painted the summer residents in town in a terrible light.”

He wanted to show the planning board “that the summer residents weren’t a monolith.” The petition was signed by 225 people.

“I think these NIMBYs are operating against their own self-interest,” Herrington said. “They just don’t realize that if the winter community and the town suffer, that will cost them, too.”

The town of Mount Desert has a unique dynamic, although one common to communities with seasonal residents who own expensive properties: Summer residents pay the lion’s share of the taxes, but because they are not year-round residents, they can’t vote.

Despite a 20 percent increase in the town’s total property valuation between 2022 and 2024, Mount Desert’s mill rate increased by about 15 percent in the same period. Meaning the town had to raise taxes even though it had more money coming into its coffers.

“You have to pay a higher premium for wages to convince people and make it worth their while to come down,” said Lunt, the town manager. “So the property values go up, also the costs of the government go up.”

In 2021, the local nonprofit Northeast Harbor Ambulance Service notified the town of Mount Desert that it couldn’t continue to operate. The town’s dwindling year-round population had made recruiting enough volunteers impossible.

So the town took over ambulance and EMS duties in 2022. It expanded the fire department, enlarging its roster from four to 14 employees, renovated one fire station and rebuilt another, adding quarters, bunks and day rooms. The final price for the facilities was around $6 million.

Responsibility for building out this new organization fell to the fire chief, Michael Bender. He had to hire a dozen or so new staff members, but hasn’t been able to fill the last paramedic position. They’ve advertised the job nationally for two years, Bender said, but have had no luck, despite paying some of the highest wages in the state.

“When people start looking at and researching the housing here, they realize they can’t afford to live here,” he said.

About half of the department’s staff live on the island; the other half come from farther away. One drives in from Old Town, north of Bangor. It’s about a 55-mile drive each way, taking nearly three hours round-trip.

Even caretakers who look after seasonal properties while owners are away seem to be moving off the island, Bender said.

It used to be that if the department responded to a fire alarm in the middle of the night during the off-season, they could find someone nearby who had a key to the residence.

Now, he said, “sometimes we’re waiting half an hour for somebody to come from off island.”

As the lawsuit awaits a decision from Maine’s high court, change is happening at Mount Desert 365. In the spring, the Rales brothers resigned from the group’s board.

New board president Rick Savage — a lifelong Northeast Harbor resident, chair of the Mount Desert harbor committee and owner of a chartered boat tour company — supported the Heel Way project in communications with the planning board before joining the organization.

For now, he said, Mount Desert 365 is putting the Heel Way project “on the back burner.”

He wants the organization to pivot to a “much smaller” project on one of its other nearby properties on Summit Road, which would likely be a duplex, as a sort of proof-of-concept.

Mount Desert 365 has also met with some plaintiffs, who “offered to drop the lawsuit if we would make concessions,” Savage said. “I don’t think the board is in a position to make any concessions.”

But the group is in the process of assembling an advisory board, and is considering some of the plaintiffs as potential members.

As for the Rales brothers, they took a step back because they had become a lightning rod for criticism, Miller said.

Meanwhile, the summer season is winding down. Kids are back in school, and visitors are limited to what some in the local restaurant business call “newlyweds and nearly deads” — tourists on either side of their child-raising years. By the end of October, the stores will close up and the multi-million-dollar yachts will leave for warmer climes.

Anastasia, the Acadia maintenance worker, is holding out hope for the project despite opponents’ fears.

“It’s not reality that they’re fearful of,” he said. “It’s not a justifiable set of things that are legitimate concerns.”

It’s not just that the bad things predicted by the naysayers won’t happen, Anastasia explained. It’s that good things would happen.

Should the Heel Way project succeed, he said, the community would be enriched by more year-round residents taking an interest in their surroundings and their neighbors: “It’s year-round housing for year-round people who call this place home.”

He said he often walks by the Heel Way property in the winter. He can see the houses of the neighbors, some of whom have gone to great lengths to stop the project. The lights are always off, their houses cold and dark.

“They’re all empty,” he said.”

India’s real GDP growth in FY24 reached 8.2 per cent and exceeded 7 per cent for the third consecutive year, demonstrating resilience amidst global challenges. The growth is driven by stable consumption and improving investment demand. Surpassing China’s economic growth rate, Indian economic growth rate over the last few years has been one of the highest in the world. The Economic Survey 2023-24 projected country’s real GDP growth in the range of 6.5 to 7 per cent, despite taking a conservative approach. Many experts, however, believe these projections will be surpassed. Retail inflation, at 5.4 per cent, remained lowest since the pandemic due to policy interventions and RBI measures. Inflation is expected to decline further to 4.5 per cent in FY25 and 4.1 per cent in FY26, under the assumption that India will have normal monsoon and no external disruption.India's real GDP grew 8.2 per cent in FY24, driven by stable consumption and investment. The 2024-25 budget focused on the textile sector with increased allocations and reduced customs duties. Despite global challenges, exports rose in Q1 FY25. Tiruppur saw recovery, with large orders from global players. New BIS certification for medical textiles starts in October 2024. A supportive budget The annual budget for 2024-25 was presented by Indian Finance Minister on July 23, 2024. The budget addressed various aspects of textile and apparel sector, encompassing production incentives, export growth and sustainability. The key highlights of the budget for the sector include: - The budget allocation for the textile industry was increased by 28.29 per cent, from ₹3,443 crore (FY24) to ₹4,417 crore (~$530 million), of which ₹375.41 crore are allocated for the establishment expenditure of the Centre, ₹3,866.17 crore for central sector schemes/projects, and ₹175.41 crore for other central sector expenditure. The major share of spend on schemes/projects will be consumed by top 5 centrally sponsored schemes: Programmes of the Central Silk Board (23.28 per cent), the Amended Technology Upgradation Fund Scheme (16.42 per cent), Procurement of Cotton by the Cotton Corporation of India under the Price Support Scheme (15.52 per cent), National Technical Textiles Mission (9.70 per cent) and PM MITRA (7.76 per cent). - The budget for PLI (Product Linked Incentive) scheme was increased by 800 per cent to ₹45 crore (~$5.4 million) from ₹5 crore in the previous year. - The funding for CCI’s cotton purchase under the price support scheme was increased from ₹0.01 crore to ₹600 crore, while funding for the Integrated Scheme for Skill Development got a boost from ₹115 crore to ₹166 crore. - The budgets for the Development of the Jute Sector and the Amended Technology Upgradation Fund Scheme (ATUFS) were reduced from ₹75 crore to ₹50 crore, and ₹675 crore to ₹635 crore, respectively. - The budgets towards the National Technical Textiles Mission, National Handicraft Development Programme, National Handloom Development Programme and Handicraft Cluster Development Programme (Handicraft Mega Cluster) went up from ₹170 crore to ₹375 crore, from ₹155 crore to ₹206 crore, from ₹190 crore to ₹200 crore, and from ₹15.7 crore to ₹30 crore, respectively. - The reduction in the customs duty, as proposed in the budget, aims to reduce input costs, deepen value addition, promote export competitiveness, correct inverted duty structure, boost domestic manufacturing etc. In the same regard, the Basic Customs Duty (BCD) on MDI (methylene diphenyl diisocyanate) for spandex yarn production was reduced from 7.5 per cent to 5 per cent, to address duty inversion and reduction in input costs for manufacturers; and, lowering of BCD on real down-filling material from ducks or geese, from 30 per cent to 10 per cent aims at making premium filling materials more affordable for garment manufacturers. - Tariff rates were reduced to zero for certain additional accessories and embellishments for the manufacture of textiles. Additionally, a bottom-up reform was proposed to create new tariff lines concerning many products including technical textiles to align them to the tariff lines with WCO (World Customs Organisation) classification and better identification of goods. These changes came into effect from October 1, 2024. - The government also proposed to expand the list of exempted goods used in the manufacture of leather and textile garments, footwear, and other leather articles intended for export. The move aims at reducing production costs and encourage more manufacturers to enter the export market. Trade update In FY24 ended March 31, 2024, India’s export of textiles and apparel, including handicrafts, increased 1 per cent and reached ₹2.97 trillion (~$35.64 billion). The export value of RMG at ₹1.2 trillion (~$14.4 billion) contributed around 41 per cent to total exports, followed by cotton textiles (34 per cent) and man-made textiles (14 per cent). MSMEs contributed more than 80 per cent of India’s textile and apparel manufacturing capacity. Particularly in March 2024, the textiles and apparel exports registered 11.18 per cent and 1.7 per cent growth over March 2023, respectively, while their combined growth was 6.91 per cent year-on-year. Category-wise, exports of cotton yarn, fabrics, made-ups, handlooms grew 6.78 per cent, carpets increased 16.23 per cent and handicrafts rose by 128.39 per cent. The categories which saw a drop in March included man-made yarn, fabrics, made-ups (-7.86 per cent) and jute including floor covering (-24.13 per cent). Imports of cotton raw & waste and textile yarn fabric, made-ups during the month fell by 11.29 per cent and 12.17 per cent, respectively. In the first quarter period of April to June of FY25, exports of textiles and apparel increased 4.08 per cent y-o-y to $8.785 billion. In this, textile export at $4.935 billion increased 3.99 per cent and apparel export valued at $3.849 billion grew 4.2 per cent, though their combined share in India’s total merchandise exports decreased to 7.99 per cent during the period. Cotton yarn, fabrics, made-ups, and handloom products saw a 5.71 per cent increase to $2.916 billion, the shipment of man-made yarn, fabrics, and made-ups gained by 0.37 per cent to $1.165 billion, and carpet exports increased by 11.41 per cent to $263.37 million. Despite unfavourable economic conditions in the EU, US, and West Asian nations, Indian textile exports grew 9.59 per cent in the month of May compared to May 2023, while apparel exports grew 9.84 per cent. The combined exports of textiles and apparel during the month registered a growth of 9.70 per cent y-o-y. The Indian textile exports during two consecutive months of April and May, increased 6.04 per cent over exports during the same two months in the previous year, whereas the exports of apparel increased 4.46 per cent. Overall, aggregate exports of textiles and apparel for 2-month period surged 5.34 per cent y-o-y. In June alone, textiles and apparel exports amounted to $2.919 billion, with textiles increasing marginally by 0.05 per cent to $1.625 billion. While cotton yarn, fabrics, made-ups, and handloom products increased 0.92 per cent to $959.55 million and the shipment of man-made yarn, fabrics, and made-ups gained 2.79 per cent to $383.16 million, the exports of carpet increased by 10.64 per cent to $121.44 million. During Q1, FY24, imports of raw cotton and waste declined 23.42 per cent to $152.01 million, down from $198.49 million in Q1, FY23. Imports of textile yarn, fabric, and made-ups improved 7.47 per cent to reach $557.2 million, up from $518.4 million in the same quarter of the previous fiscal. The inbound shipment of raw cotton and waste dipped 26.16 per cent to $70.22 million from $95.10 million, while imports of textile yarn, fabric, and made-ups jumped 23.83 per cent to $209.23 million in the month of June 2024. Tough time for exports Indian government aims to achieve $600 billion in textile exports by 2047, but the sector faced challenges such as geo-political uncertainties, consumption shifts, and low overall growth in 2024. The sector was affected by the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, the Red Sea crisis, and the Israel-Hamas conflict, which made the international trade scenario much tougher for the Indian exporters in 2024. According to a CRISIL report released in February, India’s textiles industry is unlikely to be significantly impacted by the Red Sea crisis. However, a prolonged crisis is likely to impact margins and stretch the working capital cycle. It was further highlighted that the higher freight cost due to the Houthi disruption maybe a hindrance for textile exporters with a lot of trade happening through the Suez Canal. The freight rates increased by nearly 40-50 per cent. Additionally, a global 'weak demand' in textiles was another worrisome factor for the industry. The May 2024 ITMF Global Textile Industry Survey (GTIS) revealed a continued stagnation in the textile business climate and that a weak demand remained the main concern since September 2022. Tiruppur bounced back Tiruppur – India’s textiles export hub, revived back in the first quarter of FY25, following a 14 per cent contraction in knitwear exports during FY24. The revival was triggered by large orders from global players like Primark, Tesco, George at ASDA and Decathlon. While April grew marginally at 1.5 per cent, the respective growths in May and June were 11.4 per cent and 10 per cent. The Tiruppur Exporters Association (TEA) reported US players like GAP, Carter’s and Walmart, European majors such as Next and Duns, and Australian giants like Target and Woolworths, lining up to place orders in the region. This was also due to the global majors diversifying their sourcing basket under the ‘China Plus One’ policy and a major wage hike in an important market like Bangladesh. Late last year, Bangladesh reportedly announced a 56 per cent increase in the monthly minimum wage to $113 from the previous $75 for garment factory workers. As per TEA, the region’s export in April and May amounted to $294 million and $360 million versus $290 million and $323 million in respective months of 2023. During calendar year 2024 also, excluding a 3.8 per cent drop in January, the exports showed growth in rest of the months. The increase in February and March, compared to last year, were 6.4 per cent and 5.6 per cent respectively. Tiruppur accounts for 90 per cent of India’s cotton knitwear exports, and 55 per cent of all its knitwear exports. The region faced issue of labour shortage, which showed sign of improvement after elections in India. Prior to elections, the region reportedly experienced around 40 per cent shortage in migrant employees, which reduced to around 10 per cent by mid-2024. Tiruppur's textile industry hosts 600,000 inland employees and 200,000 migrants. Mandatory BIS certification The range of medical textile products, including hospital bed linens, pillow covers, and sanitary napkins, are now subjected to Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) w.e.f. October 1, 2024. The move aims at ensuring quality and safety in medical textiles. BIS began the sensitisation efforts in this regard among stakeholders even before the implementation date. The compulsory ISI mark is a significant step in standardising products used in critical healthcare settings, potentially elevating the industry’s standards on a global scale. Kyle was happy when Price decided to send him on a special training mission across the pond to the states, at least he was for a while. But then FOMO hit him when he realized that he would be missing out on a few missions. The training would last for a few months. Two months too long in his opinion, but here he was those months later and he had finally completed his training. Kyle was certain that his Captain would be proud to learn that he had made it to the top of the class.

Now, he only had a few days left before he had to ship back out to the UK. He’d planned to chill in the barracks and maybe go to a bar for a couple of drinks. However, that was not the case when he received a random text from his cousin.

Sarah had moved out to California from their hometown after she got accepted into UCLA. She was very excited when she heard about her acceptance. Kyle believed it was because she could now party it up without the scary eyes of their very religious grandmother baring down their necks. At least that’s how he felt when he first left home to join the military.

Sarah had invited him to go out to a festival or perhaps it was a rave? He wasn’t sure because he had never been to one before so this was sure to be a new experience. He’d never been one to party, even less given that he’s living a military and not a typical college life style. However, he can say that he can handle his own with a couple of pints.

He glanced back to her text to make sure that he had input the address correctly. He was lucky that her new home wasn’t too far from the base he was staying at so he could take the bus that ran through the base. Sarah had decided that the gloomy skies of England were no match to the sunny skies of Los Angeles, so after graduating she found a job in engineering and found a place to call her own. He was honestly happy for her and was genuinely surprised that she had messaged him since they had not talked in several years. He had a suspicion that their grandmother called her about him being there.

The bus stop was only a few blocks away from Sarah’s house so he had to walk the rest of the way. It was early, almost 8 am on a Saturday, so Kyle was certain that his cousin was likely still sleeping in. He made sure that his walk took longer by taking in his environment. It must have been because of his military mindset that had him checking the area for security risks. He knows that L.A. has a bad rep but his cousin living in a decent neighborhood didn’t mean that there were no risks. Kyle didn’t see that many people out that early. Only a few dogs walkers and a mother pushing a stroller with a baby that seemed not too happy to have been woken from their sleep based on theirs incessant crying. Kyle winced when they walked by.

Kyle made it to his cousin’s door in 15 minutes. She opened the door after two knocks with a few minutes in between.

“Kyle! You’re here!” She engulfed him in a tight hug, her arms squeezing against his torso with enough strength to pop his back. “Ahhh!! It’s been forever!”

“Gah!” He wheezed as his arms were crushed to his sides. “You have gotten a lot stronger, Sarah. Please let me go.”

“Oh! Sorry. Sorry. I get a bit excited about this stuff. You know me!” Sarah let him go and cover her mouth with her hand to try to hide her laughter. Then, she flexes an arm. “I just did arm day so I’m pretty pumped.”

Kyle laughs, “Your noodle arms are nothing compared to mine.” He teased her while flexing his larger arm muscles. It was like they were back to being kids and laughing and making fun of each other.

“Har. Har. Kyle!” She rolled her eyes and gestured into her home. “Get your ass inside, Popeye.”

“Who?” His brow rose. She stared at him blankly.

“Just get in, you uncultured swine!” Sarah started pushing his back to get him in. He resisted of course, but after a few seconds he let her have her way and stepped through the threshold.

They settled on the couch and began to catch up. He learned about her job and that although it wasn’t her dream job, she was still happy about working there. Kyle didn’t tell her that much about his work being that almost all of it was classified but he shared that he too enjoyed working with his team. Overall, they were happy that the other was happy.

“Now, what’s this about a rave? Festival?” Kyle felt like he didn’t know what he was saying. “You wanted to go out later tonight?”

“Yeah! It’s a rave with festival vibes.” Sarah explained and he nodded along. “We have to dress up a bit so we can look cool I guess. That’s why I wanted you to come a bit early, though not this early!”

“Sorry.” She chuckled at him.

“Don’t worry about it. I should have known that with you military types that I should have specified the exact time. That’s on me. But! Now we have more time to go over what you’re going to wear!”

If Sarah could be more excited she’d be bouncing off the walls and out the door. Her face bright like the huge grin pulling at her lips.

“Oh… I was just gonna go like this.” He gestured at himself but apparently that did not go over so well with Sarah. She had a grossed out face.

“A button up with kakis? What are you Jake from State Farm?” Another cultural reference that he lacked an understanding of. Sarah’s accent had become more Americanized but her British voice would shine through on the occasion. “No, no, no! I will not be seen with you dressed like that, love!”

She stood up. “I think I know what to do.”

Kyle almost panicked. “Please, no cheeks handing out and nothing too girly.” His brows furrowed together. “Damn… what would my team say if they saw me like this??”

“They’d say nothing because they would see that you had girls hanging off of you. You know some girls like men who are in touch with their feminine side?”

“I don’t have a feminine side.” He pouted.

“Well, now you do!” Kyle cursed himself at being more open about what she could dress him in. He just hoped no pictures made it back to the Task Force.

Kyle and Sarah walked amongst the crowd heading into the music festival grounds. There were so many people there, and from what he could see, not so many security guards or police. His training had him looking around and eyeing any suspicious looking people. Although that was kinda hard when every other person had their ass and titties hanging out, with even more glitter on their bodies than he had.

They made it through security which was just a metal detector and the guards checking their bags. Then their passes were scanned and off into the throng of people they went.

“My friends texted that they were near the food stalls.” Sarah glanced up from her phone. “I told them we’d meet up with them. Come on, let’s go!”

She took off and Kyle followed after her. He felt like a protective older brother as he glared at anyone who gave her weird looks of lust. Sarah was pretty and everywhere she went she always garnered looks of appreciation from strangers. She was currently wearing a yellow outfit that complimented her skin tone rather well. Her hair was long and styled back in curls. Large hoops adorned her ears. She was also wearing a large yellow coat which he thought she was crazy for because of the heat, but she assured him that it would get colder as the night went on. He was certain that her new white shoes wouldn’t stay that way afterwards.

His own outfit wasn’t too bad if he was honest, although the sheer crop top was new for him. He liked the baggy pants that Sarah picked out and he paired it with his black combat boots. Sarah had given him two thumbs up and started messing around with her makeup bag. He was checking his outfit out in front of the mirror when he saw a hand with a makeup brush making its way to his face.

“Woah! What’ya doin’!?” He pushed her hand away. Sarah huffed.

“Just adding to the vibes. Come on it’s just some glitter, you’ll look so hot that girls will be falling all over you.” She grinned.

“You say that but I’m not so sure…” He squinted at her.

“Ugh! Just let go!” She shook her arm around.

“Okay, Elsa.”

“Bitch-!”

Sarah found her friends in the crowd by the food stalls. She squealed and yanked on his arm in their direction. Introductions were made and the group went together where the concerts were happening. The crowd wasn’t as pushed together as Kyle thought but he never took his eyes off the group for too long, not wanting to lose sight of his cousin. Call him overprotective if you want.

They found a spot near the middle of the crowd. The girls danced around him and he bobbed his head to the music despite it not being to his taste. Maybe he tapped his foot but he won’t admit it. Although, he’ll admit that the live band was rather good.

From the corner of his eye he saw arms shoot up and wave around. He followed the movement down and saw the form of a girl dancing and singing along to the song. Her wrists had multiple beaded bracelets, fingernails perfectly manicured. Her lips were in a smile, sparkling with her lipgloss, and her eyes reflected the bright colors of the strobe lights. Her makeup was pretty but he had no real knowledge about that. The more he looked the wider his eyes dilated.

The girl wore a black three-piece bra, high-waisted bikini bottoms and skirt-wrap combo with flowers and tuffs of faux feathers. Her arms had long sleeves and she wore a matching choker necklace. Chains dangled from her form and bounced as she jumped and danced. His eyes lowers down her legs and to her feet in very tall heels that he was amazed she was jumping around in. He thought she’d break an ankle.

When his eyes went back to her face, she was already looking at him. Brow raised in question and lips slightly pouted. Damn those lips. He flinched back a bit when their eyes connected. His cheeks burned at realizing she caught him eyeing her up.

“Hi!” She said rather shyly, or really, she yelled over the music.

It took him a moment to respond. “Hello, Miss?”

She yelled her name but said that everyone called her Angel, and he gave his own in return. The music changed to a faster beat and the people around him were dancing closer to each other.

“Wanna dance?” Her hand reached for his, fingertips sliding softly up on his forearm. He could feel the slight scratch of her nails. It sent shivers up his back.

He felt like a teenager with the slight nod to her question he gave. His damn voice was caught in his throat. He was better than this. Smoother at flirting with pretty ladies but right now all of his experience was failing him.

She giggled at him, not that he could hear it but felt it as she drew herself closer to his chest. Her breasts pressed to his shear shirt. Her hips swayed with the music and his hands automatically rested themselves there. Angel raised her hands, gliding them on his chest. Her fingers teased the sides of his throat before curling behind his neck.

As her nails scratched the short hairs there, he brought her hips closer to his. She was definitely aware that she was affecting him physically. He ground his hardness against her. They both moaned at the feeling. His eyes were droopy with lust, they glanced at her pouty lips. Someone from behind bumped him closer and he let his lips lock with hers.

Kyle’s hand tangled in her hair pulling her closer. She moaned and his tongue slipped past and tangled with hers. He tasted her lipgloss and the sweetness of the alcohol she drunk earlier that night. Both reveled in each other’s touch.

The moment was cut short by whoops and whistles to their left. When they separated, Kyle looked over and saw his cousin and her friends cheering him on. Sarah must have noticed that he wasn’t as close to them as before. His cousin gave him a thumbs up and a fist pump. The girl in his arms hid herself in his chest, her cheeks warming. As if she wasn’t just grinding up on him as they were making out.

“Ah… sorry, that’s my cousin and her friends.” He chuckled, abashed.

“It’s okay.” Angel smiled at him, taking in his pretty eyes.
