The summer sun cascades softly through the broken window, and the old moth-eaten sheets from the thrift store do a terrible job of blocking out the sunlight. The scent of bacon drifting in on the breeze from next door's kitchen window, The sounds of dogs barking, motorbikes revving and a few people shouting around the culdesac do nothing to arouse them.

The room was sparse and tattered, the plaster of the walls flaking off from dampness, and a few holes in the walls courtesy of Samuel's father. The walls a pale grey with a scuffed and chipped wooden floor. A few colourful comic posters lined the walls covering some of the older and worse holes in the walls. None of the furniture matched all of it picked up from garage sales and thrift stores and when the old stuff fell apart, none of it ever matched even slightly, A small shelf in the corner of comics and Shakespeare books, a small clothing rail held together with tape hanging a few dresses, shirts and jackets, a wooden chest of drawers to the side chipped and broken with the fake wood pealing from the MDF, one small bedside table where a few candles sat, and a old wooden double bed without a footboard, pushed into the corner so only one side was really accessible. The room did have space for the bed to be in the centre but Samuel liked it better this way, he could lay on his side and have Y/n tucked into the corner with the walls to her sides, keeping her safe in his arms so no one could get to her without going through him first.

Within the bed, Samuel lays, on his back, his right hand behind his head to help prop up his small pillow, his right knee slightly up and his left foot dangled off the end of his short bed. Wearing his grey faded old t-shirt that's miles too big for his body, and a pair of blue boxers full of holes as half-broken elastic. His blonde hair was a messy mop a little fluffy from last night's cold shower, and his left arm was draped over Y/n.

Y/n lay on her side, her legs bundled up to avoid the end of the bed, one leg wrapped around Samuel's, her head resting softly against his chest, her hand draped over his stomach, her Y/h/c hair in a braid down her back also a little fluffy from their shared cold shower last night, in a pair of pink panties and one of Samuel's old white T-shirts.

The sheets had been pushed off them both as it was far too hot without AC in their little room.

A sudden bang caused them both to flinch, as the front door slammed shut. Heavy footsteps marched across the house and it all ended with another bang of a door being slammed.

By now both Y/n and Samuel were awake, He held her in a tight grip until he knew it was over and they were both safe.

"Dad's home," Samuel sighed,

"Ummm," She nodded,

"Good Morning Deare," He cooed down to her,

"Good morning," She yawned,

"You sleep okay?"

"I did," she nodded, "Still sleeping though,"

"Okay, you sleep a little while longer," he cooed kissing her forehead, "Ummm can you smell it?"

"Mhm," she nodded,

"Must be the start of the month, Neighbours have bacon money," He chuckled but even the word made both their stomachs groan and rumble,

"But alas we do not have bacon monies,"

"I know… but we can still smell it,"

"All I smell is you, and the one-dollar shampoo."

"Ooohh… do I smell good?"

"Not really,"

"I need another shower?"

"…No, but extra body spray today."

"It might be that body spray actually, the first hour or so it's fine then it starts making me smell like old oil,"

"…Where did you get it?"

"The cheap one from the corner store,"

"Maybe trade it out for a reduced store January shower set spray,"

"Ohh what like some Guddi contempt of court?"

"Yeah exactly," she chuckled before she finally sat up with a stretch, "Plan?"

"I am gonna go and do my Shakespeare, but scamper by two before the really dickish security guy shows up but after the lunch break rush. You have that uhh… what is it?"

"It is a health check at the free clinic," she shrugged as she got to her feet and began to gather clothes for the day, tossing Samuel a pair of boxers and a clean shirt as she tossed her own on the bed,

"Didn't you do one like three months ago?" He asked,

"I did, I'm not going cause I need to. They give you a free box of condoms, a pair of boxers and a coupon for the sandwich shop next door."

"Ahhh" he nodded, getting dressed too, "Sell the condoms to Rick at the nightclub for the bathroom machines?"

"Yep, bring the boxers home for you." she nodded,

"And we'll meet at the sandwich shop to split a footlong for dinner, before we go to the mall and check the dumpsters for the unsold sale stuff?"

"Sounds like a plan," she agreed slipping her jacket on,

"Okay, have a good day dear," He cooed, bringing her in for a hug and a kiss,

"You too Sammy," she cooed, "Bye,"

"Bye,"

"Love ya,"

"Love you too,"

Y/n gave him a playful shove grabbing her bag and heading out of the little house.

Samuel sighed a little and finished getting ready himself, He adored Y/n so much and wanted her in his arms all day every day but he knew that wasn't really an option. Not if they wanted to keep their heads above water, which was at times already pretty rough.

Samuel's dad drank, and gambled away every penny they had, Beckett did his best with whatever random side hustles he could get his hands on often working shift after shift for days on end. Samuel did what he could but he was too young for most places to take him on for a part-time job or anything like Beckett so he did street performances mostly, as well as him and Y/n had a variety of ways to accumulate cash, dumpster diving, thrift shopping, dog walking, paid reviews, coupons and reward programs. They never scammed anyone or lied to anyone they were just very efficient. Every penny being saved to one day let the two move out on their own, a much more desperate need now Y/n had moved in with him after some trouble with her stepdad.

Samuel counted up the cash from his performance, it wasn't bad, it would keep them afloat for a while. He walked to the free clinic and saw Y/n already outside with their free sandwich, her jacket done up and her arms crossed.

"Hi," he cooed kissing her forehead,

"Hi," She smiled softly but seemed a little distant,

He took her hand and they began the walk across town to the mall,

"How'd you do?" She asked as they found a metal bench outside the mall's parking lot,

"Thirty bucks," He nodded, "You?"

"Basic generic sandwich I'm afraid," she said as she pulled out the sub sandwich already cut in two, Samuel looked at the two and gave her the bigger half,

"It's cool I like a generic sandwich," he nodded,

"I tried to use it for the bigger ones but it is set up only for a small or a kids meal,"

"Damn," he sighed as they ate,

"But is it extra veg cause it was Lisa working,"

"Ummm, we need to make sure we go on Tuesdays she's really good with the serving sizes,"

"Yeah, and new boxers are in my bag, you got blue ones this time,"

"Ooohh I like blue," he nodded, "Good maybe I can toss the ones I've been sleeping in there's nothing left of them,"

"And I already texted Rick he'll have the condoms off us for the vending machine at a dollar each,"

"Box size?"

"Twelve,"

"Oooohh! Good job," He nodded kissing her on the cheek, "Oh- And I grabbed a bunch of one-dollar-fifty flyers for the Burger place, some guy was handing them out."

"Expiration?"

"Friday next week,"

"Code?"

"Oooooooh good boy," she nodded resting her head on his shoulder, "We eating good the next week or so then,"

"You okay?" he asked noticing she was still a little off,

"… yeah it… nothing," she clearly lied,

"Y/n, come on Deare, you can tell me," he cooed wrapping an arm around her waist,

"Sam… Samuel I'm pregnant."

He froze, "…Humm? you- you what?"

"I am pregnant,"

"… Right …okay …Well …That's news."

"I know," She sighed,

"I thought you were on -"

"I was, but the free pill I was on got changed to not be free anymore and the one that is free apparently stops working if you aren't consistently eating."

"Shit." he sighed, "How did you find out?"

"Clinic told me, apparently it was all part of the free testing."

"I'm so sorry Y/n, I wish I was there to hold your hand at least." He cooed hugging her tightly, "Are you okay?"

"… It's a lot,"

"I understand that," He nodded, "Discussion or distraction right now?"

"Distraction, please."

"Okay," he agreed, "Come on, let's have ourselves a dig," He cooed,

He took her hand and they headed behind the mall to where all the store's dumpsters sat, this was their usual scheme, of digging through and finding the unsold merchandise for them to resell, but he made sure Y/n just sat comfortably while he worked not wanting her to get hurt.

Once the sun set they started up Samuel's old battered car, and headed out to run food deliveries, as they almost always did long into the night. Samuel drove and let Y/n snuggle up to his arm letting her relax as they finally talked it over.

"Do you want to keep it?" he asked,

"Do you want me to?"

"I do not get a say in this, this is your body. I will never tell you what to do with it, Y/n."

"We can't afford a baby,"

"True," he nodded,

"But we also can't afford to get rid of the baby,"

"We can, it would mean dipping into the savings but… if it's what you want,"

"No," She answered,

"No?" he asked, "You sure?"

"Is that okay?"

He softly smiled, "If that's what you want," he cooed kissing her softly, "Then I'm very excited to be a daddy,"

Samuel sat on the house's steps with Y/n in his arms, the two reading through a pregnancy book from the thrift store. Samuel's hand often stroked her small bump.

"See says here a balanced diet." He reminds her,

"If I wanna eat only chicken nuggets, I will eat only chicken nuggets. Baby says nugs so we eat nugs,"

"I know, but maybe something other than nugs today?"

"No,"

"Alright," he chuckled kissing her head, and then her bump, "You are gonna come out shaped like a chicken nugget I swear little one,"

"I mean… isn't it now kinda chicken nugget shaped?"

"Umm… the book says… it's an apple."

"That's size not shape,"

"I guess so, well you're a very nice little nugget in your mama's tum tum," he cooed giving her bump more little kisses, "Can you fetch me the little blue baby book off the shelf?"

"The baby-proofing one?"

"The very same,"

"Okay, just a sec," she cooed,

Samuel helped her to her feet and she headed inside, so he continued reading the book until he heard footsteps and immediately put himself between the steps and the door,

"Hi Samuel," Grace smiled,

"Ohh hey, Grace," he offered her a small smile, she only lived a few houses down and her father ran the small corner store, "What's up?"

"I just needed to pop by, about the gummies." She said as she came closer,

Samuel's blood ran cold, "I- I know I can get the money for them I swear, I just- I had to get them. For Y/n. She needed the vitamin gummies - She's struggling with baby as it is." He tried to reason with her but he knew if she was here it was already too late, with a sharp quick swing she chopped his little finger, and he cried out in pain,

"I'm sorry samuel, Father says thieves are bad for business and business has been very bad recently, and given the debt your dad has already built up… he thinks he's not getting his money. But it's okay now we even," She explained, "I hope Y/n's staying healthy," She nodded before she ran off into the night,

"Samuel!" Y/n gasped as she rushed out after hearing him yell, "Samuel what happened!" She quickly ushered him inside,

"I was dumb," He sighed as she took care of his finger for him, "I know I shouldn't have stolen them… but they were fourteen dollars and I didn't want to risk getting them close to expiration or second-hand or anything. We can't risk that with baby."

"I know, I'm sorry Sam-"

"Don't be sorry it's my own stupid fault," he sighed,

"It's still very sweet," She cooed kissing his bandage for him, "Thank you, Daddy," She giggled playing up a voice for their baby as she moved her stomach closer,

"You're welcome little one," he cooed kissing her bump,

But as he did the door opened and finally Beckett was home, which already was a sore topic.

"Hey!"

"Hey Sam, what happened to you?" Beckett asked,

"Grace came by,"

"Ah-"

"Yeah, she knows about Dad and his debt. Everywhere does."

"I know that sounds bad-"

"Sounds! It is bad Beckett. Where the hell have you been anyway?"

"Doing some stuff,"

"Stuff?"

"It's complicated, But new cars outside just arrived fresh off the order."

Samuel held Y/n close squeezing her hand in his knowing if she wasn't he would have torn into his older brother, "The car."

"Yeah, you wanna go -"

"You bought a Bently… you actually did it." He said in disbelief, "Need I remind you my girlfriend is pregnant,"

"Of course, I know-"

"We are having a baby. I have been digging through dumpsters for maternity clothes, I have legitimately considered selling a kidney to buy a goddamn Stoller, We don't even have groceries. and you bought a fucking Bently!"

"I know we're in the shit, but this will fix it you just got to give me time, and the Bently is a part of that, part of the image we need to sell to get this sorted. And it's an investment man."

"I'm hungry Beck." He told him, "Y/n is hungry, Our baby is hungry. And you stroll in with a fucking Bently."

"Here. get some Grociers." Beckett handed Samuel a few hundreds,

But Samuel knew better, "Where'd you get these?"

"I told you, time it's all part of the plan,"

"No." He told him as he threw it back, "I'm not risking fake bills at the supermarket,"

"They pass-"

"I don't care. I'm not risking it, cause if I get caught I can't lie my way out of it Beck. And I have important things to take care of, I'm not risking getting locked up." He said resting his hand softly on Y/n's bump,

"Fine… I'll go," Beckett sighed,

"Good, don't call us if you get caught."

Samuel was being as quiet as a mouse, as he slowly put together the crib he managed to snag from an online marketplace, it came in pieces so he was sitting and putting them all together to make the sweet little crib for their baby who was due to be born any day now. Y/n was having a nap in the bed as she'd had a bit of a tummy ache all day, and every so often as he worked he'd turn to the bed and kiss her little head, and her very heavy bump. Once it was all put together he admired his work, setting up the blanket, little cushions and the cute little teddy bear ready to show off to Y/n when she woke up, making it all cute for her to fawn over. When he jumped out of his skin as the window opened and Beckett's friend little Larry climbed in,

"Jesus come on in," Samuel whisper yelled,

"What?" He protested,

"Shhh!" Samuel said pointing to the sleeping Y/n,

"Sorry, look I need to grab something,"

"What?"

"Beckett told me I could hide something in your closet,"

"No, he wouldn't -"

"Just move." Larry pushed past him going into the wardrobe, digging around for something, "No. no no no no! It's gone!"

"What's gone?"

"Where is it you little shit!" Larry pushed Sameul up against the wall,

"Where's what!"

"My fucking money!"

"Money! I don't know about any money!"

"No? Cause I see a lot of new shit around here,"

"Yeah, Y/n's about to have the baby we have a lot of new shit."

"Oh, so you took my money for that you little fucker, not my problem you knocked up your girlfriend, so tell me. Where the fuck is my money, or I start asking her?"

"Don't you fucking dare!"

"Whoa! What the hell is going on!" Beckett rushed in and pulled them apart,

"My money is gone!"

"You stored money? in this house!" Beckett sighed,

"You fucking idiot." Samuel sighed,

"Check everywhere," Beckett nodded,

The three bolted around the house checking all the hiding places, every single penny was gone, all the fake money, all the debt money, all their savings, everything was gone.

"Oh my god- oh my god- What are we gonna do? We needed that money." Samuel began to panic,

"He took my money too the bastard," Larry complained,

"Who gives a shit about you two's monopoly money!" Samuel complained, "We needed that money, The baby is due any day how can I take her to the hospital with no money."

"Samuel calm down we'll find it-" Beckett reassured,

"You calm down!"

"We'll find him. And the money."

They searched all the usual spots but couldn't find him. Hours passed before finally Their father stumbled home drunk off his ass,

"Parepare his bed!" He yelled out,

"Where's the money dad?" Beckett asked,

"I had a very good night,"

"One hundred a fifty thousand dollars where the hell is it!"

"Quiet a night!"

"Where's the money?!" Samuel asked shaking his father,

"It's gone…"

"Of course it is…" Samuel broke away almost crying, "I needed that money, we all needed that money."

"We had your debts, that we needed to pay. We have bills we have to pay, Y/n is about to have Sam's fucking baby any day do you even give a shit! about any of us!" Beckett complained, "… I'm gonna have to kill him, we don't have a choice he's coming after us, you, me, Sam, even Y/n and the baby aren't safe cause of you!"

"We do not kill… in this house…" Their father muttered,

"They'll kill us if we don't!" Samuel complained,

"I saved a bit… see enough to pay-" he explained tossing some crumpled bills on the table,

"Pay for nothing! this won't even cover a taxi to the fucking hospital! let alone your debts with the casino!" Beckett began, before pulling out a gun,

"Beck- beck calm down-"

"Samuel, Wake Y/n, pack up your things, take everything we need. We're leaving."

"Beck- Please,"

"Every single fucking time, you cause us more and more problems."

"I was a king last night," Their father cooed,

Beckett pulled the trigger and luckily it was empty causing him to scream out realizing what he would have done if it had been full,

"You're not going anywhere… ANYWHERE!" Their father screamed,

"Go. Now." Beckett demanded,

Samuel nodded and rushed to his room starting to pack their things and all they had accumulated for the baby, loading it all into his car before he went to wake her, "Y/n, Y/n dear. You need to get up we need to-"

"Samuel…" She gasped in pain, already awake but catatonic from pain, her hand between her legs,

Samuel looked down and already knew, "It's too late…" He gasped,

"Baby's coming…" She cried,

But the door slammed shut.

Samuel moved over Y/n protectively, as shouting began from the living room, he heard voices, Larry. Their father. Beckett. the casino owner. The lender. All of them here to collect.

Samuel knew he couldn't get her out of the house without passing them, couldn't move her too much in this state, he had no choice.

"We have to do this… as quietly as possible," He whispered,

She nodded knowing they didn't have any other option,

Samuel used all the books he could to make sure he was doing everything right,

Y/n bit down on the pillowcase as the pain ripped through her body,

beyond the door, shouting, banging, swearing as it all went down just inches from them,

Suddenly agunshott fired Y/n took as a moment to scream while no one could hear pushing as hard as she could and suddenly the baby was born.

Samuel quickly wrapped the baby in a blanket and cradled the little girl in his arms, "Oh my god-" He gasped as he began to cry, "She's okay, she's okay, she's perfect," He whispered to reassure Y/n, "Our little girl, look at her,"

Y/n happily took the little baby and smiled widely down at their little girl,

"You're little Shakespeare slave and his bitch where are they?" The lender asked firmly,

Samuel immediately perked up,

"No, no no shh shh shh little girl, please please be quiet," Y/n begged,

Another shot ran out which only made the baby cry louder,

"Shakespeare… Shakespeare…" His voice got louder, the steps closer,

"We have to move, I'm so so sorry," Samuel whispered, But he helped Y/n to her feet all but carrying her, as they managed to sneak out of his room, he quickly got her into the backseat of the car and kissed her and the little baby before he went back inside,

"Shakespeare! I just wanna meet the baby, I have a gift."

Samuel found Larry's gun, quickly grabbing it and checking it was loaded before he walked to the house trying to find the man before he found him, and luckily he caught him as the man looked over where Y/n had been, "Hey Ronin."

The man turned but Samuel quickly fired, leaving the man to fall. Samuel quickly gathered up the rest of their stuff and checked the living room, seeing everyone dead, but Beckett was still breathing.

Samuel helped him to his feet and got him out to the passenger seat of the car, before getting in himself and quickly driving off,

Beckett slowly woke looking over the packed car, "Holy shit, that's a baby."

"Hey be nice." Samuel glared, "How's the little lady holding up?" he asked,

"Happy and giggly," Y/n nodded,

"Now what… we have -" Beckett began,

"The debts are paid. In blood at least. And we have enough cash to get us somewhere safe." Samuel explained,

"Y-You stole it?"

"I found it, when I was putting clothes away for the baby, put it somewhere safe."

"How much did Dad take?"

"One thousand,"

Doing something a little different from my usual miniature photo posting to talk about a series of games that I and my regular opponents have have been playing for a few years now and i'd like to share them with you to hopefully spread the word of they're existence because they have honestly been a niche gems in the wargaming industry.

Opsrey Wargames for a good number of years now have slowly been releasing a series of wargames often referred to as 'Blue Books', these are a series of miniature-agnostic rule books that cover a huge variety of different genres from Sci-fi, fantasy, historical and even a few modern settings all in different styles of play from skirmish, platoon sized and even naval/void combat.

As of writing this post they're are 32 (technically 33) so there is bound to be at least one or two books that cater to someones tastes but out of these 33 rule books I will only be talk about 3.

The first game that I will talk about is the first one that I ever came across which opened my eyes to this amazing series, Zona Alfa.

Zona Alfa is a modern/sci-fi horror skirmish game based around the Ukrainian game series S.T.A.L.K.E.R which is one of my all time favorite game series so you can imagine how pumped I was when I found out when such a game exists, it was because of this game that I now own a book shelve full of terrain from old Eastern European industrial/village buildings to abandoned vehicles and junk piles.

The game itself is a D10 alternating activation system that has two warbands of S.T.A.L.K.E.R's face off against each other to scavenge for salvage while also avoiding the many hazards of the zone such as zombies, wild dogs and mutants, the game itself can feel very exploitable at times but for what it is it's doing the job of portraying a S.T.A.L.K.E.R table top game and I think its worth checking out by anyone who is a fine of the series, granted you may wanna do some home brewing/rules adjusting.

In terms of miniature/terrain recommendations I cannot suggest anyone other then Anvil Industrys, over the years they have releasing many new miniature waves through they're Digital Forge Patreon and last year they released the perfect set for this game, Post Apocalypse Set 2, this set along along with almost every other set they have created is modular with they're entire regiment-scale range so you can go all over the place with designs and weapon loadouts.

For Terrain I went to a few different sources, a large portion of my terrain was 3D printed from a creator known as Deweycat Productions, they make a vast variety of terrain mainly used for World War 2 games like Bolt Action but I find they work perfectly for Zona Alfa, you can often find people selling prints of his work on sites like Ebay and Etsy, if the price is too much for you then you might wanna look at getting some MDF kits, TTCombat has a nice selection of Modern/Historical MDF 28mm kits that work just as well as any 3D printed plastic kit and probably go for half the price, but given the game is miniature agnostic there is nothing stopping you from using any old terrain or minis you have lying around.

I feel like I have talked about Zona Alfa enough for one post so I'll end it here but next time I will talk about the second game I came across in the Blue Book series which is perhaps the game I have played the most with my friends and the only one that I have ever played a table top wargame campaign with, A Billion Suns.

What Is Hemp?

It’s A Trillion Dollar Cash Crop.

Hemp is a name given to a strain of the cannabis plant.

Hemp is a name given to cultivars of the cannabis plant (Cannabis sativa) that have been selected over many generations for fiber and seed production. Most hemp cultivars contain less than 1.5% THC, a narcotic compound that has the potential for abuse in high concentrations. Cannabis sativa cultivars selected and developed for their drug properties, referred to as marijuana, or dagga, can have a THC content of 3%-25%.  Hemp is a bast fiber, producing its fibers in the stalk similar to flax, kenaf, and sun hemp.

Multiple Uses

Hemp fiber and seed are used to produce a wide range of commodities including food and beverage products, fiberboard, insulation, paper, composites, textiles, carpets, animal bedding and feed, cosmetics, body-care products, soaps, paints, fuels, and medicines.

Hemp Seed Food and Beverage Products

Hemp seed contains about 25% protein, 30% carbohydrates, & 15% insoluble fiber. Hemp seed is reported to contain more easily digestible protein than soybeans. Hemp seed contains all 8 amino acids essential to human nutrition. Hemp seed is high in calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, carotene, sulfur, iron and zinc, as well as Vitamins A, E, C, B1, B2, B3, and B6.

Hemp seed imported into the United States or Canada must be steam sterilized at between 180 degrees F and 212 degrees F for 15 minutes to prevent sprouting. Many US facilities receive imported viable seed under customs bond, steam it, and release it to the consignee or customer with a Certificate of Sterilization.

Hemp food and beverage products include hemp oil and seed, flour, pasta, cheese, tofu, salad dressings, snacks, sweets, hemp protein powders, soft drinks, beer, and wine. Hemp beer can be made from the seed, flowers, sprouts, and seed cake that is a by-product of oil pressing. Hemp beer is produced and sold in Europe and the United States of America.

Hemp Oil

Hemp seed is 25% to 35% oil, and is one of the oils lowest in saturated fats (8%). Hemp seed oil is the richest source of polyunsaturated essential fatty acids (80%). Hemp seed oil is the only common edible seed oil containing Omega-6 Gamma-Linolenic Acid. Hemp seed oil is very fragile and not suitable for cooking.

Pressed hemp seed oil must be bottled immediately under oxygen-free conditions, and must be refrigerated in dark, airtight containers.

Fiberboard

Hemp fiberboard tested by Washington State University Wood Materials and Engineering Laboratory proved to be two and one half times stronger than wood MDF composites, and the hemp composite boards were three times more elastic.

Hemp herds can be used in existing mills without major changes in equipment. Russia, Poland and other Eastern European countries already manufacture composite boards from hemp and other plant materials.

Pulp and Paper

The major use of hemp fiber in Europe is in the production of specialty papers such as cigarette paper, archival paper, tea bags, and currency paper. The average bast fiber pulp and paper mill produces 5,000 tons of paper per year. Most mills process long bast fiber strands, which arrive as bales of cleaned ribbon from per-processing plants located near the cultivation areas.

Composites

Until the 1930’s, hemp-based cellophane, celluloid and other products were common, and Henry Ford used hemp to make car doors and fenders. Today hemp herds can be used to make new plastic and injection-molded products or blended into recycled plastic products. Hemp fibers are introduced into plastics to make them stiffer, stronger and more impact resistant. Hemp plastics can be designed that are hard, dense, and heat resistant, and which can be drilled, ground, milled, and planed.

Hemp plastic products currently made include chairs, boxes, percussion instruments, lampshades, bowls, cups, spectacles, jewelry, skateboards, and snowboards.

Hemp Animal Care

Hemp horse bedding and cat litter are produced and sold in Europe. After oil is extracted from the hemp seed, the remaining seed cake is about 25% protein and makes an excellent feed for chicken, cattle, and fish. Chickens fed hemp seed on a regular basis have been found to produce more eggs, without the added hormones used in most poultry plants.

Fuels

Hemp seed oil can be combined with 15% methanol to create a substitute for diesel fuel which burns 70% cleaner than petroleum diesel. Hemp stalks are rich in fiber and cellulose, making them conducive for conversion into ethanol and methanol fuels that have a higher octane than gasoline and produce less carbon monoxide. These biomass fuels are also free from sulfur, and do not require the addition of lead and benzene used to boost octane and improve engine performance in fossil fuels. Ethanol holds condensation, eliminating oxidation and corrosion, and is reported to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by more than 30%.

Hemp has been studied in Ireland as a biomass fuel to generate electricity. Hemp has been reported to yield 1000 gallons of methanol per acre year. Hemp stalk can be converted to a charcoal-like fuel through a thermochemical process called pyrolysis. Henry Ford operated a biomass pyrolitic plant at Iron Mountain, Michigan in the mid-20th.

Paints and Varnishes and Binders

Until the 1930's, most paints were made from hemp seed oil and flax seed oil. Hemp oil makes a durable, long lasting paint that renders wood water-resistant. Hemp herds have the potential to make glues for composite construction products that are non-toxic and superior to binders currently used. With this technology, industry can produce composite products where all components are derived from hemp.

Markets for Hemp Pulp

Some paper manufacturers already have the equipment to process decorticated hemp fiber into paper. The leading European supplier of non-wood pulp, Celesa, currently produces about 10,000 tons per year of pulp from hemp. The use of hemp pulp in blends with recycled fiber of other non-wood fibers is growing. Tests by several European pulp and paper producers suggest that hemp pulp may replace cotton cost effectively in several specialty paper applications.

Potential Markets for Medical Application of Low-THC Hemp Cultivars

Many cannabis medicines have been produced using cannabis cultivars high in THC, and there has been medical research into cannabis that is low in THC and high in CBD.  CBD is a cannabinoid that does not have many of the psychoactive effects associated with THC.  CBD has been used to treat the following medical conditions: epilepsy, dystonic movement disorders, inflammatory disorders, pain, chronic insomnia, chorea, cerebral palsy, and Tourette's syndrome. According to a July 1998 report by the National Institute of Health, CBD may hold promise for preventing brain damage in strokes, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and even heart attacks and has been found to prevent brain cell death in an experimental stroke model.
