The Magic of San of Ateez (1/tbd)
#1: Fangirling San Is Intergenerational (a real life example)
During the unusually long Lunar New Year Holiday, 2025, I spent a lot of time, inevitably, with Family (not family, but Family, you get me?). And because I'd recently concluded that not being shit to women who like entirely harmless things with enthusiasm is actually really important feminist practice, I decided to 'come out' (sorry for appropriating the language but you'll see why I do it) about my interest in the Kpop Idol group Ateez.
I comandeered the remote, in other words. It was in a quiet moment after all the food had been cooked (by women) and eaten (by everyone) and the dishes done too (by women - not all families are like this but my Family is). Up until then what had been on the giant 8K flatscreen had been news, followed by old soccer clip compilations on some sports channel, followed by old fight compilations on another sports channel where really big barefoot men wearing only panties slip on each other's blood as they try to make the other one unconscious by punching him in the face, and back to news.
I turned on the below- Ice on My Teeth performed by Ateez for the MBC 가요대제전 2024.
youtube
Oh. My. Gosh. The. Comments.
The choicest one was this: "I suppose everyone has to do all the silly things at some point, inevitably, before they die? So if you were a good, smart teenager and you don't care at all about Idols and all that silly nonsense during that time, you do it later, when you're all grown up." (Derogatory) (Mocking)
The one I'd been expecting was this one, which also happened: "I have never understood those ridiculous 빠순이(derogatory) who follow 연예인 around and ruin their lives, and I never ever thought you'd ever be one of them!" Madam, I literally just put a video clip from youtube on, to watch, because a composer, multiple studio sound technicians, 8 singer/dancers, a choreographer, a dozen back up dancers, stage technicians, camera crew, a director and an editor put a show together for me to watch. Why are we talking about lives being ruined?
Sidebar- Etymology of 빠순이: I always thought that it was a neologism consisting of 오빠 + 순이 (kind of a common, girl next door name of a certain previous generation, like "Betty" or a "Jenny") and it is actually that. But the book by the ethnomusicoloist taught me that it had a second, sexually contempuous meaning: 바 (bar) + 순이 = barmaid + 순이 = whore + 순이. To be a fangirl stan means to be a woman who is expressing, in some way, desire, and in public, and this is shameful. By the by, 빠순이 has been appropriated again by the original set of people it was designed to harm, much like I understand queer to have been done by that community, definitely by millennials but possibly even before that.
The ethnomusicologist discussed having an 입덕부정기 (a period in which one denies that they have, in fact, joined a fandom) for her current most favorite band. She doesn't go into why as a person who studies music she had this internal block against actually liking music and performance but then again, I don't think she needs to say it. We know why.
So, just to be pissy, I put that shit on repeat, and then something really nice happened!
"This is a really fun song!" (yes it is!) And then! "Oh these boys have a really Korean way of singing!" (someone in her 70s). And I perked right up. What do you mean??? "It's just very Korean. They sound like they know our traditional music."
Cue me FREAKING OUT internally but very calmly saying, "You are probably right! Because they had a Chuseok show one time, where they were all making 전, and they just started singing 판소리 among themselves. it sounded practiced to me, too! And, a lot of the newer Kpop does this on purpose - they bring in pansori vocalizations and instrumentals and rhythms, because overseas fans really like it!" (I may have gotten less calm by the end of this.)
So, thus encouraged, I put on this: Killing Voice Ateez, where dance pop makers come out and sing acapella to prove that they can.
youtube
And immediately, San's voice popped out for someone. "He sounds like Steve Yoo 유승준!" she said, pointing. For her, this is the highest compliment anyone can give a Korean Idol singer. Such a pretty tone, such clarity, such emotional appeal!
Sidebar: Steve Yoo really did have a lovely voice. He wasn't a bad rapper either even though his stuff sounds so dated now (inevitably, perhaps, since he was active in the 1990s). And Steve Yoo has been entirely erased from all histories of Kpop. It was only after I heard his name in context of how much San sounds like him (clarity of tenor as well as the emotional resonance) that I realized this. Several of the books I read did abbreviated histories of Kpop and Korean pop music, and mentioned representative groups & individuals in successive 'generations' of Idols, some of whom I have never heard of, but Steve Yoo, who was a big huge deal, is so banished that they never mention him, even though he was such an immense star.
WELL IN THAT CASE I HAVE SOMETHING TO SHOW YOU.
youtube
His handsomness kind of went without comment beyond a nod of agreement, even though I prompted, because Idols are supposed to be handsome. But what seemed to grab attention was how 올바른 (proper) he seemed.
Responses: Well mannered, demure, well spoken, respectful.
Me: He's the son of a taekwondo 관장!* He's from 남해!
Sidebar: Getting Taekwondo to the status of an international sport and an official, long-standing part of the Olympics was a major national project leading up to the 1988 Olympics and beyond. They fortified what was already there to distill what we consider the best and most proper parts of our culture - being powerful and fit and fast, yes, but also elegant, refined, well-mannered and respectful. When you want to show a shorthand for a character going from like, being shady to a proper, upstanding member of society, you will have him get into street brawls at the start and end with him becoming a taekwondo instructor.
Responses: Ohhh!! He's a 경상도 boy?? OOOH. And he sings so well! His English pronunciation is so good!
And then, and I have no idea if this will actually translate into English, we had a good laugh about how even now, even though regional dialects, especially strong ones like Southern 경상도, are considered 'cool' because standard Seoul speech has taken over completely, people from my family's root region exhibit a 'change of voice' when they speak Seoul. You have to open up your throat to make 경상도 sounds - the volume goes up, the sound gets 'rounder' and 'bolder,' so when someone whose native speech pattern is 경상도 speaks Seoul Standard, they come off to fellow 경상도 speakers like they're being very cautious. We tend to find this both adorable and comical, in ourselves and each other. So we all cooed at him, whenever he was talking to Lee Mujin.
And see, this is the magic of San. He will do insane gyrations on stage, make the most arrogant sexy bad boy face you ever saw, but 70 something Korean grandmas will find his style of singing comfortingly familiar amidst all the imported African beats, and appreciate the purity and gentleness he's able to project. BLESS!
#in praise of choi san#I still want to eat him though#and make him cry but like i didn't need to say that right?#that was me being normal#kpop meta#san meta#ateez meta#choi san#ateez san

Kdramas Airing in July: A Slightly Comprehensive List
Memorials
Release Date: July 1st on KBS2
Episode Count: 32
Genre: Rom-Com
Starring: Nana, Park Sunghoon
Synopsis: Ko Sera is poor, but has a bright personality. She is famous for filing civil complaints. On the other hand, Seo Kongmyung is a public officer who follows his principles and does not get along well with others. They become involved.
My Notes: I’m not quite sure how to feel about this drama (or Nana’s hair), but it might be nice to see Park Sunghoon as a leading man (since the last drama he was in, he was a psychopath lol).
She Knows Everything
Release Date: July 1st on MBC
Episode Count: 4
Genre: Mystery
Starring: Kang Sungyeon, Jo Hansun
Synopsis: Lee Goongbok is a real estate apartment that works with apartments at an apartment complex about to undergo construction. Recently, mysterious cases have been happening there, catching veteran detective In Cheolho’s attention. He meets Lee Goongbok there.
My Notes: It’s a short drama, but it does sound interesting, plus I like the idea of a secret collecting female lead.
The Good Detective
Release Date: July 6th on JTBC
Episode Count: 16
Genre: Crime and Mystery
Starring: Son Hyunjo, Jang Seungjo, Lee Elijah
Synopsis: Kang Dochang is a detective with 18 years of experience. He takes a head on approach to investigating, using his experience instead of science. Oh Jihyeok only has 9 years of experience, but unlike Kang Dochang, he uses insight into the criminal and science to solve cases, all while dealing with unresolved childhood trauma. Jin Seokyung is a 5 year veteran reporter who is extremely passionate about her work. These three become connected.
My Notes: The leading cast might seem like a motley crew, but I’m very excited to see Lee Elijah in this, plus I enjoy older/younger man mentor/mentee dynamics a lot (like Tunnel, etc.), so I have high hopes for this one.
Men are Men
Release Date: July 6th on KBS2
Episode Count: 32 (30 min)
Genre: Rom-Com
Starring: Hwang Jungeum, Yoon Hyunmin, Seo Jihoon
Synopsis: Seo Hyunjoo works on a webcomic planning team. She wants to remain single, but attracts the attention of two guys. One of them is Hwang Jiwoo, who is the cold CEO of a pharmaceutical company, and the other is popular webcomic author Park Dogyeom, who grew up like siblings with Seo Hyunjoo.
My Notes: The plot seems a little iffy, but the cast is pretty solid (Hwang Jungeum has grown on me lately, even if she is a little hit or miss, and the two male leads are pretty sweet). I mean, but it’s taking over Born Again’s slot, and anything with half a plot could top that. It’s also called To All the Guys Who Loved Me (coughcough).
Was It Love
Release Date: July 8th on JTBC & Netflix
Episode Count: 16
Genre: Rom-Com
Starring: Song Jihyo, Son Hojun, Song Jongho, Koo Jasung, Kim Minjun, Kim Dasom
Synopsis: No Aejung has been a single mother for 14 years. She works as the producer for a moive company. Suddenly, four men appear in front of her: best selling novelist Oh Daeo, who has a mystery life; popular actor Ryu Jin; Koo Pado, a once gangster hwo is now the CEO of a finance company; and Oh Yeonwoo, who is a PE teacher at a school. Kim Dasom is an a-list actress.
My Notes: I’m not well acquainted with the cast, but it looks like it’ll be a pretty refreshing watch for the summer.
Graceful Friends
Release Date: July 10th on JTBC (& Netflix?)
Episode Count: 16
Genre: Crime and Mystery
Starring: Yoo Joongsang, Song Yoona
Synopsis: A group of friends in their 40s live in a new city. Their lives are peaceful, until a murder takes place.
My Notes: Seems interesting? It looks like it’ll be pretty gritty. There’s not a lot of info on it plot wise.
United Effort to Accomplish One Thing
Release Date: July 15th on MBC
Episode Count: 8
Genre: Mystery and Drama
Starring: Kim Hyejun
Synopsis: Bitna is the daughter of a famous painter who owns billions in property. A battle over the property ensues, in which Bitna becomes involved with. She strives to uncover the truth.
My Notes: Takes over She Knows Everything - another short one.
Flower of Evil
Release Date: July 22nd on TVN
Episode Count: 16
Genre: Suspense & Thriller
Starring: Moon Chaewon, Lee Joongki
Synopsis: Cha Jiwon is a detective. She is happily married to Baek Heesung, and they have a daughter together. Though Baek Heesung seems to be a kind and loving man, he harbors a secret darkness in him, deceiving his wife. When Cha Jiwon starts investigating a dark case, she becomes more and more afraid of the secrets her husband is hiding, and becomes determined to get to the bottom of this.
My Notes: I’m pretty sure this is going to be the number one kdrama of July for a lot of avid drama watchers, with both the leads making their comeback after around two leads. They starred in Criminal Minds together, and I’m excited to see them on screen again. It’s going to be really interesting to see Lee Joongki taking on a role he hasn’t really played before.

DAWN Shares What He And HyunA Would Do With Their Photos Online If They Broke Up, How They Act In Front Of Parents, And More
DAWN appeared on MBC’s “Radio Star” on November 13 and shared some insights into his relationship with HyunA!
This was DAWN’s first time on a variety show on his own, and he shared that HyunA had told him to be careful about what he said. When Kim Gura suggested that he just talk honestly, DAWN said, “I’m not good at lying.”
DAWN and HyunA both released their new singles on November 5 and held a comeback showcase together as good-natured rivals. DAWN said, “I was much lower in the rankings, but we didn’t focus on the rankings, and it was just a good-natured competition. We did it because it seemed like it would be a good motivation.”
DAWN went on to say, “HyunA said that she was the first one to confess and say that we should date, but it was me. When I was a trainee, there was a time when I helped her for a performance. We met for the first time then, and HyunA says that she started liking me then.”
When asked if he’d felt an interest for her too, DAWN replied, “To be honest, I didn’t.” Kim Gura said that was natural since she was huge star, and DAWN confirmed that was the reason.
“HyunA said that she felt more interested in me because while other men showed they were interested in her, I didn’t,” said DAWN.
DAWN also shared a story about what their dating life is like. He said that HyunA is the scariest when she gets mad and calls him by his real name. “I don’t get mad much myself,” he said. “I always apologize first. If I’m angry, then once HyunA has her back turned, I’ll swear at her back so that she doesn’t hear.”
DAWN spoke about how he went through a difficult time after they revealed that they are dating. “I tend to be really optimistic,” he said. “Even if I fight with HyunA, by the time I turn around I’ve forgotten about it. I’m not even that affected by malicious comments. But at that time, the people that were everything to me turned their backs on me, so it was hard then. I felt like I’d lost everything, and I was worried about even going outside in case someone recognized me.”
He shared that he’d managed to get over that feeling after starting to use social media for his fans. “There were a lot of fans there who were supporting me,” he said.
He later said that he wanted to clear up a misunderstanding that’s been caused by their social media posts. He said that many people seem to misunderstand and think that HyunA likes him more than he likes her because she’s often uploading pictures of them together and expressing her affection for him. He explained that he doesn’t do it much because he feels awkward uploading photos like that himself. He clarified, “I think I like her more.”
DAWN was asked if he’s ever thought about a potential break-up with HyunA. “I’ve talked about it with HyunA,” he replied. “People around us have said to us, ‘If you break up after you’ve dated publicly, all of your posts will still be there. What are you going to do?'”
DAWN explained, “HyunA said, ‘Let’s not delete our photos, even if we break up.’ It’s natural for young people to date and then break up, and it’s possible that we could date again. It would remain as a good memory, so I think that things like deleting all of our photos aren’t really our style.”
He also surprised the hosts when he shared how he and HyunA confidently show their affection for each other in front of his parents. DAWN said, “I’ve always liked showing affection, ever since I was young. I was like that with my parents too without any hesitation.”
He shared, “The most recent time my parents came to visit me, HyunA lived close by too so we all met together,” he said. “I naturally showed my affection for HyunA in front of my parents too. My parents didn’t mind at all. But HyunA —” The hosts joked that she must have been shocked and tried to shy away when he did that, and he laughed and said it was a bit like that. The hosts asked if they’d held hands, hugged, and gave kisses on the cheek, and he said they had.

YG Entertainment’s three producers leave the company
Three of YG Entertainment’s producers have left the company.
In 2017, YG Entertainment recruited producing directors Cho Suh Yoon, Je Young Jae, and Kim Min Jong, who moved together from MBC to YG. Je Young Jae produced ‘Infinite Challenge’, and Kim Min Jong produced ‘Real Men’. This was one of the first cases of PDs moving from broadcasting companies to entertainment companies.
Cho Suh Yoon served as YG’s Executive Managing Director, while Je Young Jae and Kim Min Jong worked on JTBC’s ‘Do The Right Thing’.
However, it was announced that YG’s PDs left the company. Kim Min Jong has transferred to KakaoM, while Cho Suh Yoon and Je Young Jae have plans to transfer to t.cast’s E Channel.
It is believed that YG Entertainment will be lessening the production of variety shows given the loss of PDs, but will still continue to produce music-related programs such as audition programs.

[TRANS] Kun, Jungwoo & Lucas interview for 'Star1' October 2018 Issue!
Q ‘NCT 2018 EMPATHY’ promotion period has finished. ▲ Lucas: I have a lot of activities by myself so I'm having a good time. ▲ Kun: I practice a lot by myself, I'm working hard at practicing singing and dancing. With Lucas and Winwin, the three of us went to China. ▲ Winwin: I practice a lot by myself. Not just dancing and singing, I also want to try other various musical things.
Q You must have learned a lot from the promotions during the first half of the year. ▲ Lucas: During the promotion period I saw a lot of handsome looks come by (laughs). And I gained a lot of fans too. I'm a little worried about how I can show a better image during the next comeback and how to live up to the expectations. ▲ Kun: I'm glad I wasn't too nervous during the promotion period. Rather than nervousness, I had a lot of fun. I think I also felt more energy because there were many members, and I could enjoy the promotions more.
Q I'm curious about the songs the members' like the most of NCT 2018's EMPATHY album. ▲ Lucas: Of course I want to mention 'BOSS'. It's my debut song. ▲ Kun: I like the Chinese version of 'Without You'. I like that you can hear my voice (laughs) And I also like ‘Black On Black’ since all the song all members are in together. ▲ Jungwoo: I like 'BOSS' and 'Black on Black'. 'BOSS' is my debut song and 'Black on Black' is great because we could show you a powerful stage with all 18 of us together
Q What made you three dream of becoming singers? ▲ Lucas: My mother likes Rain-sunbaemin. I dreamed of becoming an artist since young because of wanting to become a cool man [like Rain] whom my mom likes. ▲ Kun: I really like music since I was a kid. Because I like Jay Chou, I tried writing and composing songs since I was a high school student. Also, I thought that EXO sunbaenims were cool on stage and I wanted to be a singer in Korea. ▲ Jungwoo: When I was in elementary school, I happened to watch a music broadcast and became interested in dancing, so I went to an academy and thought I wanted to become an actor or singer. That's why I went for the audition.
Q Your family and the people around you must have been happy seeing you do promotions after debuting. ▲ Lucas: My friends and parents were all happy for me and supported me a lot. They kept saying that I would be able to do well and that gave me support. My parents didn't object to what I wanted to do. If I didn't become an artist, then I would have become a fireman. My body is strong and I'm tall, so I think I'm a good fit for a fireman. It was my dream when I was young. ▲ Kun: Everyone supported me a lot. They did not object when I passed the audition and suddenly had to come to Korea. I told my parents about a week before I had to go to Korea after I received the notice that I passed the audition, they didn't even know that I went to the audition. They were very surprised when I said that I had to go to Korea. ▲ Lucas: My mom was really surprised after she heard that I had to go to Korea the day after I received the notice that I passed the audition ▲ Jungwoo: My parents supported me a lot and they always tell me to work hard.
Q Lucas passed the audition with his handsome look in just three poses. What are you most confident about of your handsome appearance? ▲ Lucas: I'm most confident in my eyes that resemble my mother. Because my mother 's eyes are really beautiful.
Q How long have Kun and Lucas been learning Korean? It seems like the members helped a lot. ▲ Lucas: I think it's been about two and a half years. I still have difficulty in Korean. I'm learning hard. ▲ Kun: I've been learning it for three years. I could understand it a bit after learning it for half a year and could slowly speak it after the first year. ▲ Lucas: Jungwoo-hyung helped me a lot. He corrected me when I made mistakes. ▲ Kun: There is a Lucas language. ▲ Lucas: There are so many charms when I speak, so the members started following me. ▲ Kun: When he says things like "me, fighting haeyadwae", "medo mollayo (I also don't know)", he is so cute so the members follow him.
Q What was the very first Korean word that Kun learned? ▲ Kun: Lucas showed us all in JTCB's 'Knowing Brothers' right. It's the same for all the foreign friends in SM. "Hello, this is SM" are those words. ▲ Lucas: Because we had to practice Korean, whenever we ordered food by phone the foreign friends had to make the call.
Q It seems like it might feel very empty after promoting together with 18 members and then individual or in a unit. ▲ Lucas: We have a chatroom so it feels like we're always together. ▲ Kun: That's right. Whenever someone comes up in the real-time search, we put it on the group chat and praise each other. ▲ Jungwoo: Because we take care of each other like that we don't feel very empty. ▲ Lucas: Sometimes we gather together and practice so we don't feel that empty. When I went out to shoot MBC 'Real Men 300' the members told me to work hard and told me they watched it well when I came out on 'Knowing Brother
Q Is there anything that you guys have had a lot of interest in lately, aside from music? ▲ Jungwoo: Lately I’ve been really into exercising. On top of body workout, I really like sports like soccer and basketball. I watch matches and when I get the chance I go outside and exercise. ▲ Lucas: I exercise a lot. I want to make my back muscles pretty so I’ve been working hard lately. ▲ Kun: I want to travel so I’ve been finding a lot of travel videos.
Q Although Lucas has been trending a lot for his appearances on variety programs, he still has a lot of trouble with his Korean. Wasn’t it hard for him? ▲ Lucas: I have a lot of concerns over my Korean. When I’m filming I want to talk a lot but expressing myself is so hard. I want to tell fans more about myself but it’s disappointing that there’s a limit. Recently I’ve been studying Korean really hard. ▲ Jungwoo: I like Lucas’ Korean the way it is now haha. ▲ Lucas: Even when I mess up my words I think he finds me cute.
Q I heard you guys are living in dorms. I cannot hear what the members’ living habits are. ▲ Jungwoo: I’m good at organizing so as soon as I get to the dorms I clean. As soon as I get home I fold the laundry, wash, eat, and fall asleep while watching a movie. That’s usually how I live. ▲ Lucas: If we ever move I think Jungwoo-hyung will organize everything in 5 minutes. He’s like a soldier. Haha ▲ Kun: Opposite of Jungwoo, Lucas has a lot of luggage.
Q It might be a given, but the bond between the members is really strong. ▲ Jungwoo: I wish I had a little sibling like Lucas. ▲ Lucas: It’s funny because our personalities are so different. ▲ Kun: We’ve been together for so long we’ve become each other’s habits. ▲ Lucas: It’s true, we’re like a family.
Q When energy gets low while promoting, where do you guys get your strength? ▲ Lucas: I receive a lot of strength from my family. Even when I was a trainee I got a lot of strength from the thought of my family. ▲ Kun: It’s the same for me too. I get strength from my family. ▲ Jungwoo: True. If it isn’t family, it’s the members.
Q How about you guys talk about your charming points. We’re curious about the hidden charms that fans haven’t found out. ▲ Lucas: Unexpectedly, I’m quiet and have a lot of thought. ▲ Jungwoo: It’s true. He’s actually more quiet than people think. ▲ Lucas: I always show my happier sides but sometimes I’m quiet. ▲ Kun: Since there’s a lot of younger members I try to center them in front of the cameras. However in the dorms I’m really playful and laugh a lot. ▲ Lucas: Jungwoo-hyung is really cute. Fans probably don’t know. At first glance he’s so cool. But, once you get to know him, he’s so adorable. It makes you want to help him out with this and that. ▲ Kun: Jungwoo has a lot of aegyo. When he asks me to cook, he always does it with aegyo. ▲ Jungwoo: On top of this, my silliness is also a hidden charm.
Q Jungwoo, whose silliness is his charm, also has the nickname ‘Sumjinddo (hidden weirdo)’. But aside from this nickname that contains your hidden charms, is there a nickname that you like? ▲ Jungwoo: Sports drink? I want to become a bright and clean person. I like hearing that I’m youthful.
Q Out of all the members is there a certain combination that you want to promote with ▲ Jungwoo: I think it’ll be fun to promote as a trio. Fans call us the ‘Lucky Three People’. Also because we’ve practiced for such a long time together I feel like if we promote as a group like this our synergy will explode ▲ Lucas: We’ve been together for so long that even if we don’t say we know. Together.
Q We want to hear about what Jungwoo, Lucas, and Kun want to show us from here on out. ▲ Jungwoo: Not only us three, but I want the other NCT members to grow and continue to move forward. We’ll also continue working hard to show fans a good side of us. ▲ Lucas: I’m still young. I want to grow and move forward with the fans, together. I always want to be cool and do well. ▲ Kun: NCT’s greeting is “To The World”. Like our greeting, we’ll show you an us that promotes greatly all over the world.
