Shoyo Hinata literally falls for you.
The Black Jackals are dominating the match–unsurprising for a team known for their aggression, of course. But from your courtside seat, everything is so much more real. You’re almost among the players–Atsumu Miya performs his signature serve just a few feet away and you can see every wrinkle on his shirt.
Every detail on the players’ faces becomes crystal clear. Every point lost is so much more devastating. Every dive to save the ball is that much more dramatic.
There’s Shoyo Hinata. Number twenty-one. Down here, his charm radiates outwards like rays from the sun. He beams triumphantly after a successful spike and your heart skips a beat. Pretty bronze eyes sparkle, wrinkling at the edges because that’s just how hard he’s smiling. You’ve had a soft spot for the opposite hitter ever since you started following the Jackals two years ago.
From up higher in the stands or on a screen, he leaps high, but down on the ground he soars, far higher than you can even comprehend. The hard muscles of his thighs and calves ripple as the notorious Little Giant touches three metres with ease and slams the ball down. The whistle blows before you’ve even realised he’s scored.
It’s Koutarou Bokuto’s turn to serve. Somehow he’s even bigger and broader than you thought. To your surprise, he doesn’t service ace. The other team barely manages to get the ball up.
Their setter sets up for a quick, but dumps it, but Miya saves it in a dive. It’s up again. Bokuto attempts a straight. Their libero receives it. The setter has it. The hitter slams it to the back of the Jackals’ court. Bokuto receives it but it flies back–it’s coming to you.
You blink, and just like that, Shoyo Hinata is sprinting full speed towards the ball–towards you–diving just a foot away from you and he succeeds. The ball bounces off his thumb and it’s back up.
He pulls himself to his feet but he freezes for a moment. His eyes meet yours and they’re filled with such a ferocity, such a fierce determination unlike anything you’ve ever seen before. It sends chills down your spine, leaving your breath catching in your throat. For a split second you swear a grin flickers on his lips, then concentration falls over his pretty features again and he’s dashing back to the court.
Your eyes don’t leave him for the entire rest of the game. And maybe it’s all in your head, but you’d bet your life on the fact that he keeps stealing glances at you. It’s not like he’s looking at his teammates–you’re sat directly behind him. There’s nothing for him to look at. Well, except you.
In the final set, the Jackals are at match point, yet their opponents refuse to let up. Each team fights to keep the ball in the air. In the end, the Jackals are victorious with one of Bokuto’s spikes.
The crowd cries and hollers as the winning team huddles up. You’re on your feet, cheering them on with pride buzzing through your veins. Then it happens again–through the growing crowd of players celebrating on the court, Hinata’s gaze locks on you. All red and gleaming with sweat, he smiles bright as always, then he’s being pulled to the bench to recover.
A lady informs you that some of the players will be over soon to greet fans and you freeze. Somehow you’d forgotten about the poster you’d brought in hopes that you’d get it signed. Your excited buzz quickly gets replaced with a pit in your stomach. You’re going to see Hinata up close.
He starts a couple of people down your row, but that only means you have more time to get nervous. With each person that he chats to, your hands get shakier and shakier. You’re playing out the possible scenarios in your head, considering the things you can say, and ask, and how you should act, and–
“Hi.” It’s Hinata. Your favourite MSBY Black Jackals player. Somehow it’s your turn already.
“Hi!” you say, maybe a little too enthusiastically.
“I’m Shoyo… um, Shoyo Hinata,” he says. He’s still smiling. god, His eyes are so warm. His hair is so pretty, even when it’s all messed up after playing. He’s shorter, yes, but he’s so… buff. Extremely buff. His biceps bulge as he runs a hand through the front of his hair.
“I know,” is what you reply, laughing to hide the fact that you want to curl into a ball.
He laughs too and oh, your entire face grows hot and your heart is beating in your ears and he’s staring at you gently but somehow it’s so intense.
“Do you think you could sign this for me?” you ask once you eventually pull yourself from your daze by reminding yourself that you can’t possibly embarrass yourself in front of Shoyo Hinata. You’re pulling the poster and a sharpie from your bag as you ask him.
“Yes! I can do that, definitely,” he replies. “What’s your name?”
You could melt.
You squeak out the syllables of your name and he scribbles down a message, then his signature, then he pauses.
“…I was gonna sign my number, but then I didn’t wanna be creepy,” he chuckles. “I couldn’t take my eyes off you the whole game though. So I’ll be polite and ask if I could have your number? Only if you don’t have a boyfriend! Sorry for assuming, uh...”
You wave him off, your cheeks burning and the world around you spinning a little.
“I don’t have a boyfriend, don’t worry. You played pretty well, so I guess you can have my number,” you tease, giggling a little as you hand him your phone.
Once he’s put his number in, he hands the phone back and you shoot him a text to say it’s you. When you look up, he’s grinning the exact way he did when he won his game.
“I’ll talk to you later, yeah?”

A Hell of a Good Start
Pairing: Kageyama x Reader
Genre/Warnings: NSFW, Fluff and Smut, Insecure reader, Kageyama is a socially awkward sweetheart
Summary: It's hard not to feel self-conscious when your boyfriend is arguably one of Japan's most attractive professional athletes. But Kageyama is there to prove that there's absolutely nothing for you to be insecure about.
A/N: Dedicating this to @shoyokuns for all the bullying I've put her through since April Fool's 🤣😘
It was only hours after the handsome dark haired man stuttered out some words and chucked a canned latte in your hands, shoving a crumpled piece of paper in your hands, that you realized you had been asked out. And even then you could hardly believe your eyes as you stared at the numerical digits and name scrawled across the receipt.
Kageyama Tobio
He’s a regular at your cafe and you’d be lying if you said you hadn’t taken notice of him. How could you not when he towers above most other Japanese citizens, striking blue eyes and muscular body attracting the attention of many others than just yourself. And if his physical appearance alone wasn’t enough for him to stand out, his usual order definitely would have definitely seared itself into your mind as unusual.
When you had first seen the scowl that seemed to be glued on his face, you had been ready to just pour a hot cup of black coffee. So imagine your surprise when he orders the sweetest latte on the menu, requesting extra milk despite the fact that the white liquid already makes up most of said drink. But oddly it makes sense as he shyly mutters a thank you in a low gruff voice and you realize that he’s just been cursed by a bad case of RBF.
It just makes sense to start having longer small talks and conversations with him, considering how you see him everyday, and although it’s usually fairly one-sided, with little nods of affirmation and grunts of acknowledgement from your customer, you find yourself enjoying his company.
You’ve always been told you’re too nosy and curious for your own good, but one day you can’t help but ask about the sports duffel he carries with him all the time, blinking with wide eyes and shaking your head side to side when he gapes at you, incredulously asking you if you really don’t recognize the team name or logo. The two of you once again have a one-sided conversation, but this time it’s you silently listening and learning, staring at him in amazed amusement as he rambles on and on about volleyball and the Schweiden Adlers. And maybe, just maybe, you can feel a little flutter in your heart as you listen to him go on and on, passion and love evident in his gleaming eyes.
Sports have never been a big part of your life, but you find yourself leaving the volleyball channel on in the background whenever you’re home after that encounter, almost tripping over yourself to get to your couch when you hear Kageyama’s name announced on television, jaw dropping in disbelief when you see ad after ad of reputable companies and famous products using him to market their goods. Turns out your new acquaintance is a much much bigger deal than you had thought.
You tell yourself that what you feel for him is just a little work crush, just a temporary thing that will fade away over time. But it doesn’t, only getting stronger as he begins to open up, beaming in excitement when you shyly tell him you watched some of his matches on TV and although you don’t really understand the sport, you think he looked pretty amazing on the court. It’s easy to believe and hope that it’s mutual interest, when it’s just the two of you alone in that small cafe, but every time you see his face in magazines and billboards across the city, reality sinks in, and you shove your feelings deep down. What could a professional athlete possibly see in you?
A lot more than you had thought, you realize, as you shakily save the digits to your phone, praying to anyone who’s listening that this isn’t just a cruel prank when you press the call button, almost dropping your device in relieved surprise when a familiar voice greets you over the line.
The rest is history as you begin to attend his matches in person and are officially introduced to his teammate, Ushijima Wakatoshi, leaving you wondering if social awkwardness is contagious, but heart warming from your first video chat with Hinata Shoyo, your boyfriend’s best friend, although Kageyama would rather have a ball spiked to his head before ever referring to the orange-haired athlete as such.
Your relationship is sweet, albeit chaotic at times as both of you learn the ropes of dating each other. It never ceases to amaze you that despite how fiery and commanding your lover is on the court, he’s truly a lost puppy just trying to do his best in your dating life. Thank God for how genuine and pure his intentions are, how he never leaves you in doubt about how much he loves and cares for you, even if his actions and words don’t always portray it. And you let out a fond yet exasperated chuckle every time he puts his foot in his mouth around you, giggling in amusement when he immediately tries to backtrack, stuttering and tripping over his words as he tries to apologize and retry wording his compliments and concerns.
But unlike his social mishaps, his physical aptitude seems to stretch farther than just the court and you’re left a flustered mess when calloused hands so naturally find themselves interlaced with yours, when a broad chest is pulling you in for a hug almost like second nature. There’s not a single bit of hesitation or timidness as he holds you close, easily burying his face and nose in the crook of your neck, finding comfort in your presence. And this time it’s him who leads the charge as soothing affectionate caresses become more intimate and sensual, until you’re tumbling into bed with him one night.
Kageyama doesn’t have a ton of experience, but what he lacks in that department, he more than makes up for with natural instincts and sharp calculating eyes. It’s almost unreal how attune he is to every little sound and movement you make, discovering places inside and outside of you that even you didn’t know could make you react so viscerally. But you’re thankful for his naivety, thankful he never thinks to question why you always insist on keeping the lights off, why you always distract him when he tugs on the hem of your shirt, why you always position yourself so that your stomach and face are turned away from him as he takes you from behind.
It’s hard not to be insecure about your body when you’re around a professional athlete like Kageyama and you know he doesn’t mean anything by it other than to make sure you’re staying healthy when he questions what you eat, know that he loves how you look regardless of the fact that you’re nowhere near as in shape as he is. But when you see the pretty fangirls who fawn over your boyfriend, when you see the gorgeous models he poses with in advertisements, it’s impossible not to compare. And when the both of you are naked and you see his rippling muscles and Adonis-like figure, all your self-doubts bubble to the surface, boiling and burning you in their wake.
He thinks these things are just your preference and he wants nothing more than to make sure you feel as comfortable and good as possible, so he follows your lead, hands immediately shying away from your shirt when you bring his hands to grope your breasts from over the fabric and ignoring the pout playing on his lips when he can’t see you as clearly as he wants in the dim lighting.
But when he begins to practice with the Japan national team, quietly sipping on his own drink as his teammates get drunk and rowdy at a team happy hour one night, he furrows his brows questioningly as Atsumu and Bokuto ramble on about their sex lives. It’s no surprise to anyone, himself included, that Atsumu prefers it wild in bed, testing out and experimenting with different positions. But what does surprise him is when Bokuto emphatically shakes his head and excitedly rants about how underrated good old vanilla missionary sex is, how there’s something so intimate and beautiful about being able to stare into each other’s eyes as you make love to each other, only to be lightheartedly jeered at and teased for being a romantic by some members of the team.
Yet Kageyama doesn’t pay them any mind, too focused on trying to piece together this new piece of information he’s learned. Missionary? Looking at each other’s faces? Romantic? Intimate? He had assumed that it wasn’t something people liked. You certainly didn’t seem to enjoy the position or eye contact during sex in general. But Bokuto’s eyes had literally sparkled as he had shouted about it and you had always fondly told Kageyama in secret what a romantic sap the owl-like man is. Had he been reading your signals and body language wrong all this time? Were you not enjoying the intimate nights you spent together?
No, that can’t be true and he flushes a bit, remembering your pretty whimpers and lewd moans he’d dragged out of you, the screaming of his name as your body convulsed around him. No, you have been feeling good. He does make you feel good! But then why...why does it feel like he’s missing something?
He’s never been subtle and it’s obvious he’s still deep in thought when he retires to his shared hotel room with Iwaizumi. The green-eyed trainer stares at the setter curiously, unsure whether or not to directly question Kageyama about what’s bothering him. They’ve become much closer ever since reconnecting on the national team and Iwaizumi is fond of the younger man, despite Oikawa’s squawking and whining whenever he even hears the ex-Karasuno setter’s name. But despite their new blossoming friendship, some things don’t change. Kageyama and Iwaizumi have always erred on the more reserved side of the social scale, so the spiky haired ex-ace resigns to stay silent, allowing the setter to come to him as he wishes.
Except Kageyama approaches much sooner than he thought he would and Iwaizumi is stunned speechless by the blunt wording and topic of his question.
“Does your girlfriend like missionary sex?”
There’s silence as blue and green eyes just stare at each other, one pair laced with steely resolve, the other filled with shock and confusion. In any other scenario, Iwaizumi would wonder if this was a joke, maybe even be affronted and scowl at how rude and personal the question is. And yet, as he scans Kageyama over, sees the genuine curiosity and determination in his eyes, he just sighs, wondering how he managed to end up being the trainer of so many social deviants.
“Yes, sometimes.”
“How often do you guys have missionary sex?”
“Are you- Are you taking notes?!”
There’s wrestling, some grunts and growling, a smack on the head, and then there’s silence as Iwaizumi questioningly looks at the younger athlete who’s rubbing his sore forehead, silently demanding answers as he holds the pad of paper and pen Kageyama had been dutifully writing on hostage. He wonders if maybe he should take it easy on him, almost considering this a lost cause, but then words are spilling out of Kageyama’s mouth and he quietly listens, a small knowing smile slipping on his face as the setter nervously explains everything, blushing as he discusses his sex life with his ex-senpai. And then it’s Iwaizumi’s turn to talk, and Kageyama hopefully smiles at the older man when the trainer grins at him, clamping a strong hand on his shoulder reassuringly, telling him that he just needs to talk to you about it and that he’s sure everything will be just fine once you two discuss it over.
But he is a bit confused by the last word of advice his senpai gives him.
“And Kageyama, make sure you remind your girlfriend that you think she’s beautiful.”
Of course you’re beautiful. Perfect, really. Why would he need to tell you that? Isn’t it obvious?
Iwaizumi rolls his eyes, an amused grin on his face when he sees the clear confusion on Kageyama’s face at his parting words. But he sleeps easy, confident that the two of you will be just fine.
You’re not sure what’s transpired at Kageyama’s latest training camp with the Japan national team, but you can feel your lover’s eyes practically piercing you with how hard they study you, relentlessly trailing your figure, an unsaid question heavy in the air. The tension is thick and you tiptoe around the elephant in the room, wondering exactly what has your boyfriend so on edge and just when it becomes unbearable, just when you’re about to confront him directly, he moves first and it takes every reflex you have not to drop the cup of water you have in your hand.
“You’re beautiful.”
Kageyama is not expecting or ready for the torrential flood that is now running from your eyes and all he can do is rush towards you, clutching you tightly in his arms, apologizing profusely (although he’s unsure exactly what he should be sorry about). But blubbered words escape alongside the salty tears and the athlete listens to every syllable, arms almost crushing you, fingers digging almost painfully into your skin, his own heart shattering when he hears the self-doubt and self-hate you’ve been suffering through alone. And soon both of you are sobbing messes as Kageyama tells you over and over again how beautiful you are, how perfect you are, how he loves you just the way you are, repeating himself until his throat is sore and you’re pushing the glass of water you had set aside to his dry lips.
This time as he gently pulls you with him towards your shared bedroom, he adjusts the lights until he can clearly see you, slowly coaxing you with reassuring kisses and tender caresses until he feels the tension in your shoulders relax. Neither of you can keep count of just how many times Kageyama tells you how beautiful you are, but it’s never enough for your greedy praise-starved ears and he softly smiles at how you seem to relax and melt more and more into his touches with every praise that falls from his lips. He doesn’t stop praising you as he gradually pushes the fabric of your shirt up, only pausing to intimately kiss, taste, and touch every inch of newly exposed skin he’s privy to. But then there’s silence when he finally hooks the material off of you and he just stares, breath caught in his chest as he takes in the sight of you laid completely bare before him for the first time.
Your hands move to cover yourself, face turning away, unable to hold his intense gaze, feeling so vulnerable and exposed. But your neck whips back to look above you when calloused hands carefully, but firmly grasp your wrists, laying them back down besides you, eyes still roaming over your naked figure. Your heart races at the love and hunger you see in cobalt eyes and suddenly you can’t tear your eyes away from him, lost in endless blue.
It’s almost sinful how good it feels, how much more sensual the slowness and explorative nature of your skin on skin dance feels and you curse yourself for having denied yourself this pleasure all this time as Kageyama’s lips swallow your hardened nipples, hot tongue circling and lapping at the sensitive bud, sucking in a way that has you writhing underneath him, whimpering when you see hazy blue eyes lustfully studying you. And when he finally enters you after what feels like a lifetime of foreplay and teasing, your body more riled up than it’s ever been, humiliating whines for more slipping past your lips, too filled with desire to be even remotely self-conscious, you swear you almost cum just from his cock sliding balls deep inside of you.
The two of you have arguably done filthier things, his cock reaching even deeper inside of you when he has you on all fours doggy-style underneath him, when you’re riding on top of him in reverse cowgirl. But as your eyes lock onto each other while you’re connected below, both of you can’t deny that there’s a new level of intimacy, of arousal, that makes even the most minute movements feel amplified, every shift of hips and the slightest brushes of skin against skin flooding both of you with dizzying pleasure.
There’s no rush or urgency to completion like there normally is when the two of you chase your ends and it’s a slow and gradual crescendo, every note and every key painstakingly and reverently played. Hips slowly grind against each other, Kageyama’s cock dragging against your sopping wet walls, lips melding against each other as you languidly kiss each other all the while. You can feel a powerful buildup rising inside of you, something fuller, more overwhelming than even the mind blowing pleasure Kageyama always bestows upon you. And when he pulls his mouth away from yours, laces his fingers with yours as his hips begin to increase their pace, snapping harder as he feels his own end approaching, he bends down and murmurs into your ear, a mantra of how beautiful you are, how much he loves you.
That’s all it takes, that low baritone voice filling your senses, his words the last push you need. You’re free falling, convulsing, gripping him tightly, walls clamping down around his pistoning cock and he loses any control or restraint he had as he desperately observes you, trying to brand every twitch of your face, every sound you make into his memory. If he thought you were beautiful before, you’re absolutely breathtaking like this, a face expression so purely filled with your essence, so raw, so unimpeded by any inhibitions. And he joins you over that pleasurable cliff, ignorant of how your own eyes just as greedily take in the sight of his chiseled face contorted in bliss, Adama’s apple on full display as he throws his head back.
The two of you bask in the post-coital haze, bodies feeling boneless as Kageyama carefully lays slightly to the side of you, lower bodies still intimately connected, one of his legs thrown over yours as he affectionately holds your still trembling body to his, both of you panting and melting into the cushioned mattress. It feels safe and comforting in his arms and you allow yourself to nuzzle even closer to him, almost sinking into his warmth and letting exhaustion overtake you.
But as the leftover tendrils of pleasure begin to fade away, your senses become more alert and you nervously bite your lower lip, the exposed nature of your still naked figure suddenly all too apparent to you. You subtly reach for the blankets, trying not to accidentally awaken the slumbering man still tucked against you as you attempt to cover yourself, eyes darting around for your clothes, desperate to hide yourself and shield your body from view once again.
Old habits and insecurities don’t just change overnight after all.
You’re so focused on your tasks at hand that you don’t notice blue eyes blearily blinking, trying to make sense of all the little shuffling that had awakened him. But you yelp when you’re suddenly made immobile by two strong arms wrapping tightly around you, pulling you snugly against a toned chest once more.
“Tobio! Let me go put on pajamas at least.”
You flush when Kageyama pointedly stares down at his own completely naked body before staring at yours, a deadpan expression on his face as he inquisitively gazes at you.
“I- Uh...I’m cold! Yeah, I’m cold-”
There’s nothing convincing in your tone as you stammer out the excuse, too embarrassed to voice the real reason out loud when Kageyama had done nothing but reassure you and make you feel like the most stunning woman in the world, even if it was just temporary. But before you can spiral any further, your thoughts are cut off by a fluffy comforter blanketing and enveloping both Kageyama and you, the setter already re-closing his eyes after deeming you sufficiently tucked in and “covered”, although your self-consciousness begs to differ as your bare skin brushes against your lover.
You open your mouth to protest, but as if sensing your thoughts, one blue eye peeks open and you’re silenced by a stern “go to sleep”, strong arms wrapping around you even more tightly than before, keeping you still. And you can’t help but smile, shaking your head in fond exasperation as Kageyema’s stubbornness wins out over any self-doubt festering inside of you this time around, letting yourself find peace and security in his arms.
Old habits and insecurities don’t just go away overnight, but this is a hell of a good start.

Tumblr media
The ball that was spiked by Hinata was supposed to be the last point for the Black Jackals to win the match, but it was later blocked by Kageyama, and there was no way it could be saved. Everything went fast although Hinata, the player who’s known for his speed, agility, and skills, saved it with his foot and it went back to the setter perfectly. The audience are on the edge watching the whole match, cheers from both teams went louder, supporting each of them like their life depended on the outcome of the game.
Hinata didn’t hesitated to run on the other side of the court to try and spike the ball again, blockers are already on the spot and ready to block him, sadly, Hinata played them and used himself as a decoy. Ball was set to Bokuto and he hit it with too much force that Ushijima didn’t got a chance to save the ball.
The match ended with Black Jackals as the winner with a score of 3-1, all players were exhausted and at the same time felt happy with the outcome. As they were stretching, you and your group went up to the side of the court to congratulate the team, mostly Bokuto. Your group prepared banners and shirts printed with a “Bokuto, OUR greatest ace”, to cheer him while playing. You were amazed by how good and interesting the matches were, and both teams have their own style of plays.
You admit that you did went to the gym to cheer your friend, but you couldn’t leave your eyes from wandering at their #15, Mr. Sakusa Kiyoomi. You saw his plays, the service aces, receives that he pulled off nicely, you saw why he’s considered as one of the greatest players in Japan. You wanted to talk to him, congratulate him, and just go back to normal like how the two of you were months ago. Even though you’re expecting something more with him, it seems impossible. Not wanting him to feel uncomfortable, you stayed and kept your distance from him.
Sakusa was reaching for the small black box that Atsumu gave him yesterday, saying that it’s the perfect ring for the Goddess Y/n. He didn’t check it, because he knew if he saw it and was not contented with the ring, he’ll return it and buy another one. And the thing is, it was already late and he still has a match tomorrow that time.
Seeing you busy conversing with his teammate, he took the chance to approach and surprise you, since he knew if you look at him, he’ll hesitate and won’t do it.
“Y/n?” you let out a sharp breath and looked at the owner of the voice and saw them kneeling in front of you holding a box. You widen your eyes as cameras are now focused to the two of you.
“You are the most annoying person that I’ve ever meet, well you and Kuroo. But you, you annoyed me the most. The time that you hoarded those masks, but only used five frustrates me. Also, the alcohol. and when I got my revenge, you accused me of being immature when in fact you were the one who sent me a Chicken Kuroo meme when I first dmed you. ” Laughter can be heard from the background which made him stop from his speech and sighed; he can feel thousands of eyes staring at him, and ears listening.
Atsumu was a mess, he wanted to stop the proposal, he didn’t expect his friend to listen to his advice. He didn’t think that Sakusa has the balls to actually do it after after the match. But what concerns him the most is the idea of Sakusa being humiliated because of him. He never ran so fast than Hinata just to snatch Sakusa from the scene, and hide him, but Hinata and Bokuto tackled him.
“And when we had our first conversation, I can’t stop thinking about how beautiful and mesmerizing you are just like how the three doofuses there describe you. You have always been the woman of my heart ever before this beautiful and disaster relationship with you. I have always seen you in my dreams several times even before I met you; you are the only one I have loved so much. You make everything beautiful when you are around, every moment I spent with you is like I’m in paradise on earth, I want to live closer to your heart for the rest of our life, I want you to be my wife and the lovely mother of our smart, beautiful, and funny children to be, and maybe a sporty person just like their daddy, my love, will you marry me?”
Sakusa then opened the box and revealed the ring.
The awws transitioned to haha’s, and Sakusa is already sweating twice because of the idea of rejection, he looked at you and saw you staring at the ring with a blank face. He's about to accept your silence and stand-up but you immediately took the ring and placed it on your fourth finger on the left hand and pulled Sakusa.
“Omi, I am this close on crying because of your speech, I like the ring, it’s unique and SWEET but what the fuck is this ring?” the boy was confused by your question, so he then looked at your hand and went pale. It was a ring pop. He proposed to you in front of the world with a RING POP. He looked at Atsumu and was ready to charge at him, however, you stopped him and kissed his cheek.
“Look guys, I’m officially engaged with SAKUSA KIYOOMI” you proudly showed them your ring and hugged Sakusa, the boy was still embarrassed and flustered with what happened. He hid his face on your neck and asked you on a date. Which was Atsumu’s second step.

Go, Tsukki, Go!
Tsukishima with a supportive s/o who goes to all his games and cheers really loud for him, but one game he starts to lose confidence and so his s/o helps encourage him!
Tsukishima Kei x Reader
Here you Anon~ Hopefully this makes sense because even though I’ve watched Haikyuu like five times, I still don’t know how a volleyball game works. I could not tell you the positions or anything! TT Anyway, I love Tsukki~~ Not like Yamaguchi doe (`∀´)Ψ
WC- 1,245
~~~
*cracks knuckles* here we go, you know every time I write about Tsukishima I have to state that I think he is such a brat so…
Omg Tsukki is such a brat, but a sweet one
He would secretly love and appreciate all your support, even if he doesn’t say so. We all know he would act as if you irritate him but you just have to read between the lines,,,
Tsukki plays 10x better when you are there cheering for him, not like he would ever tell you….
He looks forward to your cheers that you scream and the praises you drown him in after a game
You’re like his good luck charm </333
So when you aren’t there to cheer for him,,,, it doesn’t affecting his playing skills to say but, he is noticeably quieter and less interactive with the team
It’s not like he expects you to go to all his games, because he knows you have other life priorities and stuff, but he definitely misses you when you aren’t there
Sometimes... he really needs your support
It’s the second set of a preliminary game, and Karasuno is down by three. It’s like the ace of the opposing team can get passed every single one of Tsukki’s blocks and deep down it pisses the blonde off. He keeps looking to where you usually are, but fails to remember that you weren’t there because of an emergency you had to attend to
Each time he sees the empty spot his chest hurts a little, despite that he continues to play as he normally does. Using his head to outthink the other team and come up with new strategies to score points
It’s so frustrating, he can’t score as easily as Hinata or Tanaka but Tsukishima still wants points. He can so easily get the ball right at his fingertips but the volleyball brushes past his fingers, and it’s too late for it to be saved before it hits the floor
“Don’t mind Tsukki!” Yamaguchi yells reassuringly and Tsukishima simply closes his eyes for a brief moment, breathing in and out to calm himself down, because now it is his turn to serve
“Nice serve, Kei!” Your familiar voice calls and Tsukishima wonders if he heard it inside of his head, except when he looks up at your familiar spot, there you are. You’re waving at him cheerfully and clapping your hands noisily to hype him up and Tsukishima can only stare in shock at you
He barely even hears the ref's whistle blowing but he snaps out of his daydream, he rolls his eyes at you before serving the ball (a lot better than he normally does)
The second set goes by a lot smoother than the first one, it’s almost like your voice calms Tsukishima down when he can’t focus. He usually has a level head whenever he plays but his heart still beats erratically in his chest and he can’t ignore the way his blood is rushing through his veins, yet your presence somehow cures the adrenaline rush
“Yes! Block them Tsukki!!!!” You clasp your hands together and yell, smiling fondly even when your boyfriend glares up at you. His face just reads ‘shut up’ but when do you ever listen to him
The blonde starts being able to block the ball better than before, calling out ‘one-touch’ left and right. Tsukki is finally able to ignore the way his fingers sting,
Much to his relief, and the entire teams, Karasuno wins the second set with a score of 25-22
“Ah, (Y/N) is here!” Nishinoya waves at you after they win the second set while Tsukishima ignores his upperclassmen “I didn’t even notice them”
Tsukishima will never admit to himself or anyone else but deep down, he wants the game to be over. He wants to hurry up and finish this last set, win it, and then talk to you like he does after every game
Which is exactly what he does, it’s obvious to the rest of his team and even the opposing team how much Tsukishima’s energy spiked in the final set. He even compliments, Hinata?
“Go Karasuno!!” You cheer for them and Tsukishima’s eye twitches when he notices the second years tearing up at the support
Tsukishima is like,,,, when is this game over….
“Did you hear me cheering for you?” You stare up at Tsukishima, practically bouncing on your toes in excitement. Your boyfriend only rolls his eyes and lets out a sigh. Tsukishima found you after the match and dragged you to an empty hallway where he can be all kinds of soft with you.
“Yes, I heard you. I’m sure the teams at the end of the gym heard you with that big mouth of yours.” He teases and you puff your cheeks out and push at his shoulders, not at all ignoring the way his arms tighten around your waist.
“You like this big mouth.” You sound proud of yourself and it just makes Tsukishima want to roll his eyes again.
“Sadly,” He snickers and you gasp at his teasing.
“Sadly? What do you mean sadly?!” Tsukishima stops your assault of flailing your arms around by pulling you into his chest, holding your body flush against him so that you can’t move anywhere.
“Why are you here?” He asks, and with the frown on your face, he nearly cringes at his choice of words. “I thought you had to go to the hospital?” Tsukishima was not going to show that he was worried, even though he knows he was, maybe that’s why he couldn’t get you off his mind the entire game?
“Oh, my appointment ended early! I’m all good for my yearly physical!” You tilt your head when you notice Tsukishima staring down at you in disbelief.
“That’s it? You went for a yearly physical?” He asks slowly and you nod a few times before leaning back into his chest.
“Yup.”
Tsukishima can’t help but scoff, he worried his ass off (not like he would ever tell you) and you were just going in for a checkup.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” He asks immaturely and your face falls when you look back up at him.
“I did,”
“No, you didn’t.” Tsukishima never will learn, that it always fails when he tries to argue with you.
“Yes, I did Tsukishima! I texted you and told you and you left me on read 7:05 pm!” Your voice rumbles in your chest and Tsukishima internally flinches when you call him by his family name. He gently pats your head and smooths down your hair, though it bounces right back up, to calm you down.
It works, every time.
“Well, I’m glad you showed up.” He speaks so lowly that he’s not even sure that you hear him. You did. Tsukishima takes a deep breath before continuing. “I really like having you there, even if you’re a loud mouth.”
He thought you’d be angry by the soft insult he slipped in but you didn’t care, not when he is confessing to you like this.
“Awe, you like me Kei! I knew it!” You coo and try to kiss his jaw, your boyfriend rolls his eyes and lifts his face up so that you can’t get your way.
“Obviously I like you if I’m dating you.” He snaps back and you hum happily. “Want to get some food?” You catch Tsukishima by surprise when you hook your hands on his shoulder and jump up to kiss his cheek.
“Of course, I do!!”
**********************************************
haikyuu!! headcanons
**********************************************
he watches you cheering him on during his match, and you get steamy in a changing room right after
warnings: i didn’t age the characters up here, still there is clearly suggestive if not even sexual content. i don't glorify sexualisation of minors. so please don't take their ages too seriously. just pretend they're all in college or something
pairings: kenma x reader, kuroo x reader, tsukki x reader, noya x reader
note: omg hell yes! thank you so much for this request. i am in LOVE with it👀💅🏻 and sorry that took so long to write
**********************************************
kozume kenma
the match was in full blow. the crowd cheered as nekoma fought against nohebi. their opponents were strong, though they slightly had the upper hand.
you sat in the front row, well stood and jumped up and down every time nekoma made a point, especially when kenma, your boyfriend did.
he had noticed you a while ago, cheering on him making him kinda proud to do something worth your applause. he wasn't able to look at you very often as he was the brain of the team and had to watch and analyse the court, but every time they scored a point he did, just to see you with the brightest smile on your face.
so even though they were in the third set already and exhausted to the max, the motivation couldn't seem to leave him.
then finally, nohebi's ace made a mistake and spiked the ball directly at yaku, who received perfectly tossing to kenma, who set the ball to yamamoto. it came through.
the whole gym fell silent as the ball touched the opposite side of the court, before deafening cheers and applause filled the hall. the match was won.
as soon as the victory was announced you had jumped up and ran to the entrance door. kenma looked for you in the crowd like a lost puppy until he spotted you and power walked over.
he was all sweaty and beaten up but still managed to smìle at you weakly as you rambled about what a good job he did. you talked too much for his liking.
'...and that last -' he shut you up with a kiss. it was intended to be a gentle peck, to make you stop talking but after he started he just couldn't hold himself back any longer. it felt so good to kiss you right after what he had accomplished.
he put both his hands on either side of your waist, pulling your core closer to him as he slipped his tongue inside your mouth and made you slowly back up into and abandoned changing room. after you were inside he locked the door and pushed you against a wall.
in between kisses you managed to say 'kenma *kiss* what has *kiss* gotten into you?' he looked you straight in the eyes.
'i don't know, but it feels so good right now' you smiled as you flipped him over, so his back was against the wall now and kissed him just as passionately as he did before. after a few seconds you pulled away. he shot you a confused look.
you leaned in again, kissing the side of his neck, making him sigh heavily 'maybe i can make you feel even better.' you paused. 'may i?' he nodded energetically making you giggle. you kissed him one last time before sliding down, kneeling before him
you undid the knot on his uniform pants sliding them down, as well as his underpants
...
after maybe 15 minutes you left the changing room, kenma being even more out of breath than he was before, earning confused and some knowing glances from his teammates.
kuroo tetsurou
the atmosphere was tense. nobody seemed to talk as the ball switched sides again and again
kuroo heard you cheering for him lightly. it was faint but it was there, your voice apart from the big crowd
still he couldn't avert his eyes much, but after every point he looked at you. sometimes you gave him reassuring thumbs-up or smiled at him encouragely
the match was intense, one team just as strong as the other, points tied most of the time
but there it was
eveybody was tired but nekoma's defense still stood strong, completely tearing the other team's offence apart. the ace of the other team served, yaku received and passed to kenma who tossed to lev. he spiked it over the net but the opposite libero could get a hold of hit, directly passing it to the ace again, who jumped in for a spike again.
but nekoma saw it coming
kuroo and lev jumped in for a block, but in the end it was kuroo's hand that touched the ball and slammed it down.
the ball fell and it almost seemed like time went in slow motion. the players of the other team tried to reach it but failed.
the gym was completely quiet for a second, before cheering emerged from all sides.
nekoma cheered, lev and inouka giving each other high fives, yamamoto tackled kenma, but kuroo looked for you in the crowd.
he was looking up in vain, as you had already jumped up and ran down to the entrace of the court. you yelled and waved 'tetsu!'
he literally ran into your arms, lifting you up and spinning you around in his endless relief, making yaku and kai roll their eyes, but in a playful way.
'you did so great' you whispered in his ear, while the rest of the team left walking around you, knowing your display of affection might take a while. you continued to whisper sweet compliments and praises in his ear, but he seemed kinda distracted.
he started kissing you behind your ear, nibbling on your soft and sensitive skin, leaving a little red mark.
'tetsu... what are you doing? everybody can see us' you stuttered, making him smirk.
'so it'd be ok, if they didn't see us?' he muttered in this deep voice of his. he was so close to your ear that you felt the vibration of his voice on your skin.
before you could even answer he backed off in an abandoned changing room, locking the door behind him. 'we wouldn't want anybody to interrupt us, right kitten?' he groaned, still holding you up, your legs around his waist.
your eyes slowly got used to the darkness of the changing room. kuroo stoved you against the wall, making you wimper when your back hit the hard surface.
'kitten.' he looked you in the eyes, and all the playfulness from before had vanished from his face. he looked serious, desperate even. 'i need you. i need you right now.'
you nodded. 'ok' you said gently.
kuroo smiled then kissed you passionately, before pulling away and tried to open the button and zipper of your pants. his hands were twitching, maybe from the exhaustion he had gotten from the match and clearly struggled opening them. you smiled faintly, signaling him to let you down, what he did and let you do the work and slide down your pants.
then he undid his own and stepped closer again pressing his body against yours, trapping you between him and the wall again, giving you a heated kiss, while pulling you up again.
he slid down his pants and
....
about 15 minutes later both of you arrived at the school bus, clearly out of breath, but still smiling.
the team gave you annoyed looks especially yaku, who rolled his eyes yet again.
just lev was confused. 'what took you so long?' he asked rather nobody and everybody at the same time. then he turned to yaku 'yaku-san what were they doing?' he looked at lev disgusted
'i don't get paid enough to answer that kind of questions'
'you don't get paid at all, yaku'
tsukishima kei
the game was at the peak of tension right now. nobody in the crowd dared to speak as most of them had covered their lips with their hands in an attempt to hold keep their gasps inside, to not distract the players.
daichi had been switched with ennoshita after getting hit in the face and getting a nose bleed. tsukishima, your boyfriend also got no mercy. after the ace of the opposing team had spiked against a three man block of karasuno, hitting tsukishima's hand with full strength, both his pinky and ringfinger had started bleeding. still nothing that couldn't be fixed with a bit of tape.
you had been cheering for him most of the time but when that happened, it left you in shock.
he heard your faint cheers in the back of his head, and the scream you gave as he got injured. you have him a questioning look that asked if he wanted you to come down, but he shook his head, trying to calm you down.
didn't work obviously
still he continued in the match
he stole glances to you now and then, too short for you to even notice but you didn't care. you were way too tense to bother.
and then there it was.
the opposite ace spiked the ball over the net, or at least tried but hinata, tanaka and tsukishima jumped in, forming a giant umbrella. the ball rebounced off tsuki's hand and landed inside the opposite side of the court, as the other team still tried to save it, but failed miserably.
it took the guys a moment to realise their victory but when they did their emotional outbursts were amazing. tanaka, noya and the first years (except tsuki) screamed, the third years including kiyoko cried and hugged each other, tsuki pumped his fists in the air and then got tackled by noya.
yachi, who had been standing beside you in the ranks cried as well. within sobs she pulled you with her down, to congratulate the team.
the team just said their thanks and bowed to the crowd when tsukishima finally noticed that you weren't there anymore, but saw that yachi wasn't either, so he estimated that both of you were on your way down.
when they left the court to the hallways he spotted you, you who couldn't or didn't try to hide their excitement at all. you ran into his arms and he was so happy and energised still that he hugged you back and smiled the biggest, most genuine smile you've ever seen him smile.
the rest of the team took off. you'd have a small stay before the bus would be taking off.
tsuki still had you in his arms. you giggled. he was so sweaty but you off course didn't care right now.
'you did so great' you said over and over again making him even more lightheaded than he was already. abruptly he pushed you off slightly, making you give him a confused and offended look, but before you could say anything he took you by your arm an pulled you into an abandoned locker room.
after you two entered he locked the door behind you before giving you his undivided attention again. you remained silent while he approached you slowly, making you back up against a wall until you were completely cornered. he pushed a knee in between your legs, making you moan lightly and him grin.
you knew exactly what was about to happen and you let him. he deserved it.
still not moving his leg he moved his face closer until your lips finally touched in a passionate and hungry manner. not taking his mouth off yours, he opened your pants swiftly with one hand, pulled it down and moved his fingers in between your legs to your...
...
about half an hour later you and the rest of the team was to meet at a destined place at the gym.
all the other guys anyway cooled down, didn't even look sweaty anymore. just tsuki was still red and out of breath
most of them (except hinata) suspected, but nobody even dared to ask.
nishinoya yuu
everybody was exhausted from the continuous exchange of the ball. nobody wanted to give up as the ball switched sides again and again. both liberos had the most work. noya was all sweaty and out of breath, still he managed to move like it was the beginning of the game.
it wasn't. they were in their 5th set right now.
you never failed to cheer on him, calling his name over and over again. like this he couldn't slack off. you relied on him. the team relied on him. so he didn't.
and there it was.
the ace of the other team spiked the ball over the net but karasuno's block managed a one touch, noya received it in the last second and brought the ball back to kageyama.
he tossed to asahi, who broke directly through the opposites team block.
the gym fell silent
after a few seconds the cheering started. the whole fan club of karasuno including yachi and you was so excited. nobody had believed in them to win but here they were. 17-15. 3-2.
yachi and you went down to the entrance of the court, where noya and the rest of the team already waited. as soon as he saw you, all the energy seemed to come back to him as he ran into your arms and literally tackled you to the ground.
the team have you little worried glances (maybe he had hurt you) but both of you just remained on the ground for a bit giggling.
the others decided to walk around campus for a bit, leaving you all to yourself.
sfter a bit you were able to free yourself from noya 's grip, standing and pulling him up with you. you continued to hug him tightly still. telling him over and over again how great he did.
he was way more excited than you were though, bubbling on and on about how he felt.
you stopped him mid sentence with a kiss, to what he gave in immediately, closing his eyes and cupping either side of your cheeks with his hands.
a few seconds later though, he noticed that the heat from the game just didn't seem to leave him.
he felt light headed and his core literally burned as the at first soft kiss transitioned onto a passionate and hungry one.
not breaking contract with you he pulled you with him as he backed off into an empty changing room.
you went with the flow though.
he stoved you on to the wall next to the door, pressing you against it with one hand and locking the door with the other, still never breaking the kiss
you were used to noya being affectionate and open with pda but this was a fairly new experience, him just lashing out like that. he usually was pretty innocent with pda after all.
you felt like his tongue found it's way deeper and deeper into your mouth
you backed away a bit, trying to speak so his lips moved swiftly to your neck, sucking the sensible skin
'noya, what..' you managed to say before he stopped you by shoving his tongue in between your lips again.
'i can... can't i?' he gave you this puppy eyes, making you nod ever so slightly. 'i did so good today, didn't i babe? did you see? i gave it my all just for you.' you nodded again
you moved your hands away from his chest down to the waistband of his shorts. his playful expression got replaced by a more serious, questioning one, asking if it really was alright with you, getting your permission. you nodded a third time, making him smirk
he let you continue to slide his pants down and
...
about 20 minutes later you met up with the rest of the team at the front gate, both of you looking more out of breath than before
tanaka gave noya a silent but proud thumbs-up
the rest avoided eyecontact in embarrassment
headcanon : they feel jealous
✧˖*°࿐ headcanon of hinata, kageyama and bokuto feeling jealous (the manga has ended today....( ´•̥̥̥ω•̥̥̥` ) </3 )
Tumblr media
˚₊· ͟͟͞͞➳❥ shoyo hinata
ɞ you were in the gymnasium in which the karasuno high volleyball players were practicing in
ɞ you were close friends with the second years, nishinoya and tanaka
ɞ (the inseparable best friends)
ɞ but, you were also quite well acquainted with the rest of the team
ɞ as you continued to watch their practices and matches
ɞ a certain orange haired male found himself liking you
ɞ i mean, who wouldn’t like you?
ɞ whether he saw you in the bleachers or sitting by yachi in the gym, he instantly became pressured to look good in front of you
ɞ this resulted to him missing a lot of spikes
ɞ anyways,
ɞ coach ukai was throwing volleyballs towards the players as a form of practice
ɞ hinata heard your laughter ring through his ears and he wondered as to why your laugh sounded so gleeful
ɞ he took a step forward as the line shortened and he was able to get a view of you from the behind of kageyama’s shoulders
ɞ you were standing beside nishinoya, chatting animatedly with a smile on your face
ɞ “nishinoya is able to make y/n laugh like that?”
ɞ a bubbling feeling envy rose from his stomach
ɞ the next interaction he saw made his envy bubble evenn more violently
ɞ your hand was ruffling nishinoya’s black hair
ɞ nishinoya had a faint but a definite noticeable blush on his cheeks
ɞ hinata : ∑(O_O;)
ɞ he wondered if the bubbling anger he felt was because of nishinoya
ɞ but instead, it was because you looked so happy with him
ɞ heart ❤️been broke 💔 so many times ⏰ i i don’t 🤷‍♀️know what to believe 💭
ɞ he wanted to be the only person who could make you smile and laugh the way nishinoya did
ɞ suddenly,
ɞ he felt the ball come in contact with his face
ɞ the next thing he knew, he was on the ground with a red cheek and a bloody nose
ɞ “oi bOKE you’re supposed to catch the ball with your hands,”
ɞ “maybe if you weren’t staring at y/n...”
ɞ “w-what? i wasn’t!”
ɞ hinata stood from the ground, slightly dizzy from the impact of the ball
ɞ he saw you running towards him with a concerned face
ɞ he couldn’t tell if he was fantasizing about it or if it was real until he heard your worried voice
ɞ “hinata! are you alright? oh my god i should take you to the nurse,”
ɞ “coach ukai! i’m taking hinata to the nurse,”
ɞ you grabbed onto hinata’s wrist and hurried outside the gymnasium, heading towards the nurse’s office
ɞ once the two of you arrived, you gently knocked on the door, but there was no reply
ɞ “sorry for the intrusion,”
ɞ you slid the door open and to your dismay, the nurse wasn’t in the office
ɞ “sit down hinata,”
ɞ and hinata sat on the bed as you said
ɞ once you had found the items you needed, you made your way back to hinata
ɞ you took the tissue and gently dabbed on his philtrum where the blood from his nose ran down
ɞ at that moment, hinata felt all his bubbling anger and jealousy die down
ɞ the close proximity of you two made him flustered
ɞ it also made him freak out because you had seen him in his bloody state
ɞ “y/n, do you like nishinoya?”
ɞ you took a step back to chuckle
ɞ “him? of course not! he’s my best friend. besides, i wouldn’t like to date someone who finishes half a container of hair gel a day,”
ɞ hinata felt relieved
ɞ “why did you ask?”
ɞ “i-uh oh nothing!”
Tumblr media
˚₊· ͟͟͞͞➳❥ tobio kageyama
ɞ you and kageyama have been officially dating for a few weeks
ɞ the two of you were able to get close as you were recruited to become their new volleyball manager
ɞ once their practice match had ended, you waited outside the gym for kageyama to exit
ɞ “let’s go,”
ɞ the two of you walked together, exiting the school grounds and exchanging sentences
ɞ “you and hinata were so cool! hinata jumped and he went like bam! but then nishinoya saved it and it went whoosh!”
ɞ kageyama chuckled at your sound effects and hand movements as he found them cute
ɞ you then felt a vibration in the pocket of your track pants
ɞ your eyes brightened at the sight of the caller id
ɞ unluckily for kageyama, he wasn’t quick enough to see who it was as you instantly swiped on the phone to pick up the call
ɞ “hello?”
ɞ “oh my god~ i miss you so much yuyu!”
ɞ “yuyu?”
ɞ “how’s my baby doing? that’s great! you should come visit here sometime,”
ɞ kageyama’s eye twitched at the nickname, baby
ɞ as you continued to talk to the person on the phone, kageyama couldn’t help but frown at the sight of you talking so happily
ɞ his jealousy level sky rocketed when your cheeks turned into a shade of pink
ɞ “w-what? no! o-of course not! when did yuyu learn to say things like these?”
ɞ “what the hell? i thought i was the only one who could make her blush,”
ɞ you side glanced kageyama, “yeah he’s beside me right now. oh! alright, call me back sometime. love you!”
ɞ you ended the phone call with a smile on your face
ɞ you turned your head to kageyama who had a slight pout on his lips
ɞ “why are you so pouty?”
ɞ “nothing,”
ɞ kageyama fastened his pace
ɞ “tell me kageyama,”
ɞ you whined, catching up to him
ɞ but he didn’t answer
ɞ you sighed and ran past him, stopping right in front of him
ɞ you crossed your arms, “were you jealous?”
ɞ the tips of kageyama’s ears turned red
ɞ “no i wasn’t. why would i be?”
ɞ aware of his bad lying, you gave a teasing grin
ɞ “oh that’s good. i wouldn’t want you to be jealous of my four year old nephew,”
Tumblr media
˚₊· ͟͟͞͞➳❥ kotaro bokuto
ɞ you were standing in the bleachers, attending the match in which your crush would play in
ɞ that’s right.
ɞ crush.
ɞ your crush happened to be the captain and ace of fukurodani academy’s volleyball team
ɞ and he had so happened to have a crush on you
ɞ winkwonk
ɞ akaashi had noticed your presence in the bleachers and he gave a hard nudge to bokuto
ɞ “hey! why did you do that for?”
ɞ akaashi simply pointed to you
ɞ you waved ecstatically to them
ɞ bokuto’s eyes gleamed and he felt a pump of adrenaline
ɞ whenever he sees you in one of the practice matches, he’ll feel more confident as ever
ɞ like he’d play even better
ɞ your power dude/dudette
ɞ you felt a small tug on your jacket and you turned to face a small teary eyed child
ɞ “where’s my sister?”
ɞ “did you lose her?”
ɞ the tear eyed male nodded his head, tears spilling out
ɞ you looked around the bleachers,
ɞ “can you tell me what your sister looks like?”
ɞ “pretty,”
ɞ you gave a small sigh and picked up the male in your arms
ɞ “there’s a lot of people here. i don’t think your sister would’ve gotten far. maybe she’s searching for you! so let’s stay right here alright?”
ɞ the small boy nodded his head
ɞ thankfully, you had brought a few snacks in your bag
ɞ you handed the boy an onigiri you had been saving for lunch, hoping that it would calm him down
ɞ and it did
ɞ and so, you watched the first half of the match with the boy sat next to you
ɞ “y/n-chan, do you have a favorite player?’
ɞ you nodded eagerly and pointed to the grey and black striped headed male
ɞ “his name is bokuto and he’s the team captain. he’s really cool,”
ɞ the small boy beside you tilted his head in a cute manner, “cool? is he your boyfriend?”
ɞ your cheeks instantly turned pink and you shook your head
ɞ while the team were having a small break, akaashi’s eyes squinted at you and he was about to give another nudge at bokuto until he realised that he was already staring at you
ɞ “who is that little boy? why is y/n blushing? is this even allowed? damn that boy! i should be the one making her blush,”
ɞ the tips of bokuto’s hair had peaked downwards
ɞ which meant that he was feeling pretty sad
ɞ “i’ve never seen her blush so hard before. you have some good competition,”
ɞ akaashi immediately regretted his words
ɞ "h-how did i loose to a boy?” bokuto spoke in his pouty voice
ɞ this
ɞ was
ɞ the return of bokuto’s emo side
ɞ bokuto stared at you and the boy with disheartening eyes
ɞ he turned away dramatically
ɞ “no! i can’t bear to see y/n with another man,”
ɞ “akaashi what the heck did you say to him?”
ɞ this was troubling
ɞ the break was going to end in a few minutes
ɞ if nothing was done now, bokuto’s emo side would remain for the entirety of the game
ɞ “bokuto-san!”
ɞ the loud voice of a small male caught the attention of bokuto
ɞ he turned around, with a sad expression and his eyes moved to the source of voice
ɞ it was the child who had been sitting beside you
ɞ “y/n-chan has something to tell you,”
ɞ his eyes then moved to you
ɞ your cheeks were practically glowing red
ɞ because 1. the whole team was staring at you 2. probably everyone on the court and 3. you were sure that the people in the bleachers were staring at you to
ɞ you took a gasp and shouted, “YOU’RE DOING GREAT BOKUTO!”
ɞ there was a faint blush on his cheeks
ɞ by the end of the second half of the match, bokuto had scored majority of the points
Hiii! Soooo I’m still kinda new to s Haikyuu!!! (Just finished the 2nd season) but I noticed there aren’t a lot of Karasuno imagines are there, soooo I’m here to request for Tadashi, Noya, Hinata and Suva with an s/o who’s usually very quiet and shy during the games but one rlly intense game they get super fired up and they get visibly frustrated, but once their bf gets the ball (or does like a super cool move lol) their s/o just yells “hell yeah!” and how the bois would react to them.
shid i had so much fun writing this :0
HCs of a Usually Quiet S/O Getting Excited During a Game
Yamaguchi Tadashi
Yamaguchi is called to be a pinch server in a very close game. The sets are tied, 1-1, and the score is 23-23. Karasuno has the ball.
Poor boy is feeling more nervous than he had ever felt before. Usually, the nerves don’t get to him anymore, but this game was different.
Especially because you were watching the match, he wanted to make sure he wouldn’t embarrass himself.
He looks at you, only to find himself blushing profusely when you scream the words, “You got this baby boy!”
Hearing that ignited a fire in him. Determined, he took a deep breath and did his signature jump serve
It was an ace!! When you yelled with joy, he got even more motivated.
Because of you, he managed to get another ace, leading his team to victory.
“Great job Yams!! You did amazing,” you ran up to him, hugging him tightly.
“Couldn’t have done it without you,” he says while giving you a kiss on the lips
Nishinoya Yuu
So we all know that Nishinoya gets kinda serious during volleyball matches
It was match point in the last set. This was kind of a miracle for Karasuno, considering how bad the ref was.
There were so many times where Noya successfully pancaked the ball, but the ref always thought it touched the floor when it obviously hadn’t!!
Everyone (especially you), was visibly frustrated at the biased ref. You knew that nothing could be done except hoping for the best.
Lost in your thought, you didn’t notice the opposing team’s ace spiking.
That’s when Noya made an amazing save (which led to Karasuno getting the point!)
Riled up, you shouted at top of your lungs, “LET’S GO NOYA!! THAT’S MY BOYFRIEND RIGHT THERE! YEA, THE ONE WHO JUST MADE THAT AMAZING SAVE?? HE’S MINE.”
Noya was shocked. Never in a million years did he think someone quiet and reserved like you would do that.
He gave you the biggest hug after the game and whispered, “You should do that more often.”
Hinata Shoyou
Everyone knows that Hinata is an amazing spiker. There’s no denying that.
However, he was really off today. The quick attacks weren’t working today. He was either to slow or too fast.
You could tell Hinata was getting beat down. He became more hesitant with his approach, and you could see him getting discouraged.
Situations like this rarely occurred. Hinata was usually the upbeat one, lifting everyone’s spirits.
As Karasuno called for a time out, you saw your boyfriend with his head down and fists clenched.
“YOU GOT THIS HINATA! WE ALL BELIEVE IN YOU!” you cheered. The spiker looked at you with a face full of shock. A genuine smile slowly appeared.
Giving you a thumbs up, he got back on the court. There was something different about him this time. His energy was a lot better overall.
He whispered something to Kageyama, and before you know it, they executed a perfect quick.
“THERE WE GO! HELL YEA! DO IT AGAIN, BABY.” you encouraged. Ever since that, he’s been on top of his game.
Hinata couldn’t pinpoint the exact reason, but something about you got him excited. You being the normally quiet girlfriend, got him fueled with spirit.
Sugawara Koushi (this one contains slight spoilers from S3!)
Suga rarely plays in an actual game. After all, his position was taken by the first-year.
In this match, Kageyama blocked a powerful spike which resulted in a finger injury. Suga, being the other setter, had to sub in.
Since it was a very important match, he got extremely jittery. You remained quiet, knowing that being nervous was a normal part of sports.
However, your concern for him increased when he flubbed a set badly. It only got worse as the game continued. You could see him getting upset with himself.
“COME ON SUGA! YOU COULD DO IT! I KNOW YOU CAN. NOW GET IT TOGETHER BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE, YOU IDIOT.”
Suga was stunned. Who knew his calm s/o had the ability to be so loud?
The ref turned back to look at you. With your facing turning as red as a tomato, you sat back down and tried to avoid eye contact.
He chuckled to himself. You were reminding him of that time where he yelled at the team during the Shiratorizawa match.
Somehow, your words got his act together. He finally got into the flow of the match and even executed some setter dumps.
maybe he should get y/n riled up even more
Thanks for reading!
Karasuno boys x sick!fem!s/o
Trigger warnings: mentions of sickness!
Requested by: @animegirlfromvietnam
A/n: this is the third try because the other two drafts were merked by tumblr :(((
Daichi
Daddychi, I luh you 🥺🥺🥺
He spent a bit of time with you before the game, seeing as it was a weekend one.
However, not too much time!! He's the captain so he has to be there early.
He gave you his hoodie though, not able to resist your puppy eyes.
"Rest, okay, love? I'll see you afterwards."
"I love you, Dai!"
"Love you too, honey."
He has husband petnames, FIGHT me on this
When he and his team walked onto the court, he could have sworn he heard you cheering.
Except, you wouldn't right? You were sick.
Right?
He didn't check, it'd throw him off his game to check and worry about you.
However, afterwards, when you collided into him, he welcomed you with a hug and leaned down to whisper in your ear.
"I thought you were staying home?"
"Wanted to support you." You mumbled against his chest, and he chuckled lightly.
"I was going to bring home a CD for you, you know that, right?"
"Mn."
Sugawara
Suga, oh yES PLEASE
He probably babied you all day before the match.
"I made soup!"
"Koushi, I can feed myself."
"You're sick, baby, let me work my magic!"
He tried to make you promise to stay home and rest, but failed to notice your crossed fingers
During the game, he got put in to set, and managed to raise his teammates morale to the brim!
When he got on though, he could have sworn he heard his beautiful, stunning, and very sick s/o cheering for him.
Noooo. She wouldn't
He was proven wrong after the game however, when your form enveloped him into a warm hug.
You smiled up at him, but he was pouting ever so slightly.
"Weren't you staying home?"
You pressed a kiss onto one of his beauty marks.
"That's a dirty trick!"
Asahi
He's so stressed
Please help him
"I can stay home from the game, if you need me to??"
"I'll be fine, Ace."
"Are you sure??"
He'll hear you cheer and just swivel his head to the stands
But like mid jump so he'll just slam into the ground
"ASAHI???"
"I'm...I'm good-"
He is good! You're cheering for him! And if you are, that means you must feel a lot better, right?
He's surprised, when you give him a post game hug, that it isn't accompanied by a kiss
"G-good work! That was a bad fall, though, how's your side?"
You're still sick????
He frets and frets, and eventually you two go home where he makes you tea and thanks you for coming
Nishinoya
"Look at me! The best boyfriend ever bringing you ice cream!"
Let's you play with his hair, and maybe style it if you know how
"I'll win just for you!"
"You mean 'our team'?"
"Yeah!"
Really bummed you can't come, but you're sick! You can't help it
Mid game, he'd manage to save a particularly hard serve, but when he heard your cheer of "GO YUU!"
Hoho!
He completely forgets your sick, and gets hyped
They win, of course, and yuu you two embrace post game.
"Did you see my saves in the first set? They were all 'wah' and 'bam'!"
"I-Im so proud of you, Yuu!"
Immediate pout
"Wait! You're sick!"
"Yeah?"
You're in his arms now, sorry I dont make the rules
"Your perfect boyfriend is going to take perfect care of you!"
Tanaka
Bald simp man <333
He comes PREPARED
(Thank you, Ennoshita)
Then he ruins it by deciding kisses are the best meds.
They're not.
Even when he's leaving, he's pulling every trick
"5 more for the road?"
Scouts the audience one last time to see if you're there
And when he sees you?
"MY GIRLFRIEND IS HERE! IM ALLLL FIRED UP!!"
"Keep your shirt on, Tanaka."
Even after the game he doesn't let up
"Victory kithes??"
Like, begging, hands and knees.
And who are you to refuse?
He's sick 2 days later
Yamaguchi
He felt so bad for you!!!
You ended up having to reassure him you wouldn't die.
"Tadashi, it's a cold."
"But what if it's more??"
You cuddled for straight HOURS while watching ghibli movies and drinking tea.
Eventually though, he had to leave for the game.
"You'll do great, 'dashi! I know how hard you've been working!"
"O-okay!"
He got put in a quarter way through the game, and immediately tried a jump float,
Which
He
NAILED
What caught him off gaurd though, not only his win, but, if he focused, he could have sworn he heard a cheer he reconized.
Convinced himself it was nothing until after the game when you wrapped him in a huge hug
"Y-y/n?"
"Tadashi!! Your jump float!!!! It was so good!! I'm so proud of you, baby!!"
He sheepishly held you close, a flush reaching his ears,
"P-please be safer next time and stay home." Before pulling away a bit and looking at you.
"Was it really that good?"
Please just praise him
Hinata
He🧡🧡🧡🍊🍊🍊
He is surprisingly good at this, he's taken care of Natsu when she gets sick, so he has experience
Doesn't mean he isn't still hinata.
"Kith??"
Literally so bummed you can't come.
Kageyama hits him
However, afterwards, when you come up and hug him tight??
He doesn't care if he gets sick, kisses, hugs, and cuddles for the rest of the night.
He gets sick a week later.
(Sorry his was so short!)
Kageyama
Bluebabby<3
He really wants to help but is very confused
"Eat your soup, Boke!"
His Google search history is filled with
'How do I help my girlfriend not be sick'
'Girlfriend sick what do'
'Help girlfriend has a cold'
You have just been vibin the whole time while telling him
"Tobio, I had cough medicine earlier."
"Tobio, I don't need more soup."
"You can't kiss me, you have a game in a half hour."
He's pouting about that.
Just give him some butterfly kisses, that should help.
During the game, he doesn't hear you cheer, his complete focus is on his teammates and the ball.
However afterwards, he's a bit bummed you couldn't come, especially because they won
"Yamayama, are you SULKING???"
"BOKE! I am not!"
He is.
At least, until you suddenly hug him tightly from behind.
"Good work, Tobio! I'm so proud of you!"
He's happy now, even if he might get sick if he kisses you
Tsukishima
Tsu-KISS-ME-shima
He had texted you before the game, but didn't come see you because 'he didn't want to get sick'
Totally not because it broke his heart to see you at anything less than your best, and knew he would miss the game if he came to see you
Reminded you to rest, well, not exactly reminded, more like told.
"Get some sleep, idiot, yamaguchi misses you."
"You don't???🥺🥺🥺"
"Look who's drawing conclusions? Go to sleep."
However, during the game, after a particularly good spike, he heard a familiar scream, that sounded just a bit abused from sickness.
He tried not to look at the stands
However, afterwards, when your form barreled up to him, enveloping him in a hug, he just "tch"ed and hugged you back.
"Aww!!"
"Shut it, Tadashi."
"Gomen, Tsukki!"
You were both exhausted, you from the exertion of cheering, and him from the game, so you bussed home together.
"Good work!" You croaked at him, a stupid smile adorning your face.
"Shut up.. and thank you for coming."
Tumblr media
Throughout the whole game against Nekoma, you and Hitoka both hold to each other. The anticipation of where the ball was going to go. Holding each other tighter whenever it seemed the ball was going to fall on the Karasuno side. Karasuno now needed one point to win. One point to move on. One more to play against another school. One more to stay on the court longer.
Please! Just one more point!
The ball continued back and forth, getting received, toss, spike, block, and then repeating. This last point felt like hours, but in reality, it was only for a few minutes. Until, as if it was in slow motion, the ball hit the floor. Feeling the mouth wobble, you hold your breath in, starting at the spot on the floor where the ball hit in surprise.
Did that just happen?
Hearing a while being blown, pulling you out of your thoughts, you and Hitoka looked at each other in shock. You two started at each other for a while, and then look back at the scene on the court. Karasuno was cheering, people in the stands who came out to support Karasuno were cheering loudly, you and Hitoka were now cheering loudly. After a hard and intense match with Nekoma, Karasuno came out victorious.
You and Hitoka still hold each other as you jumping around in circles, cheering for them.
They did it! They get to stay on the court longer!
The boys shook hands with Nekoma and then bowed to their supports. You and Hitoka both break the hold on to each other and raced down to the court entrance. Waiting by all the cameras and other players who were watching. Seeing the boys heading towards you two, you met them halfway. Giving them high fives and congratulating them with a proud smile.
“You did amazing!” Hitoka said to them, “They way you received the ball and then toss it! And your spikes were amazing!”
Wiping away his sweat with the towel, Daichi happy thanked her. Glad you were wearing your backpack, you sling it in front of you, opening the zipping, and started to hand out some snacks. Nekoma then came toward Karasuno, once again congratulating and how it was a good game. The two groups then walked, seeing Fukurōdani was about to finish up their match. Looking at the scoreboard, you saw they already won the first set and about to win the second set. Akaashi gave Bokuto a beautiful toss, which Bokuto spiked, winning that match.
They did the after the game ritual and then greeted Nekoma and Karasuno. Hinata praised Bokuto for the amazing straight shot and Bokuto accepting the praise. Soon after, the big three groups become different groups as each one had their own conversation. You heard Akaashi, Kenma, and Tsukishima were talking but, pay no mind to it. You just felt completely happy. Not once did the smile left, but it did falter a bit when you noticed something.
Hinata seems more exhausted than usual…
Breaking off to the main seating area, the boys choose to either sleep, eat, or watch a match. Most of the boys ate first and then sleep or walk around, mostly relaxing. But in Hinata's case, who decided to watch a match first and then eat, much to Kageyama’s disdain.
Soon after everyone had eaten, You, Kageyama, Hinata, Yamaguchi, and Hitoka started to walk around on the main court sidelines, preferring to watch the match up close. Not really paying attention to what they were saying. You noticed in the corner of your eye that a team was getting on the court. Seeing streaks of yellow and green, you turned around and saw it Itachiyama.
You then saw two boys from the team waved, one very enthusiastically when the other most just raise his hand in a polite greeting. Kageyama gave them a short wave, as for you, you held eye contact with Sakusa, final matching the name with the face. You gave him a wide smile and a thumbs up, silently telling him good luck. You also saw he gave you a small smile in return since he wasn’t wearing a mask like usual.
He has a nice smile.
So focusing on his smile, you missed the way the brown hair Libero was so shock that Sakusa gave you a smile. Seeing him walked on the court, you couldn’t help but keep looking at him, intrigued by his presence. But you were taken out of your trance by hearing, “Now let’s decide, which one of us is the true Little Giant of today.”
Looking at the person who talked, you saw a white hair kid who reminded you of a seagull. Hearing Hinata agreeing with him made you realize that maybe he wasn’t a kid. But you got your actual answer when you saw a taller person wearing the exact same uniform, talking to him casually.
Oh, he’s a high schooler…Oops…
Seeing them walk off, they were out of eyesight. Once they were gone, Hinata exclaims how excited he was for the next match. With that, we went to start warming up.
After the warm-up and everyone was dressed, we then started to head to the main area, waiting until it was time to start. In the meantime, we were all paying attention to the Fukurōdani game. A top 3 ace Vs. a top 5 ace.
This should be interesting.
During the middle of the second set, you and Hitoka went to the balcony, getting ready for Karasuno fight.
It was now time for the Karasuno Vs. Kamomedia match to start. Both you and Hitoka hold your breath, waiting for the serve. Kamomedia was the first to serve, which Daichi saved, hitting it towards Kageyama. He then passed it to Hinata, showing the world once again their crazy quick attack, scoring a point for Karasuno.
Each side both fought hard in the first set, but Kamomedia won the first set. Throughout the whole game, you and Hitoka hold your breath, hoping to win the second set. With your hands on the rails, you tighten it, helping you stay grounded, not wanting to overthink and think of the worse. You saw Hitoka starting to shake, but before you could ask her if she was alright, she took in a deep breath and started to relax. You also decided to do the same, helping you relax as well. You couldn’t help but let go of the rail and fight with your hands. Looking at the other courts, you know noticed that Fukurōdani had just finished their match, winning two sets, they are moving on to the next round.
With a smile on your face, proud that they won, you looked back at Karasuno’s court. Seeing they are about to start their second set. Noticing that Hinata and Tsukishima had trade places. But you knew that Coach Ukia-San had a plan for Hinata, you let out a tiny mischievous smile. Karasuno isn’t a team to be backed down so easily.
Watching the second set, you analyzed each player, toss, spike, receive, and serve. Yet you had a nagging feeling telling you something was going to happen. It would grow stronger whenever you looked at Hinata.
Nothing is going to happen…All is well…
But the feeling never went away as you continually look at the match. Fidgeting with your fingers and checking your pulse on your wrist. You noticed that Hinata was slowly getting more exhausted than usual, his face look as it was burning up.
It just because of play two games in one day… And he’s running around a lot more than usual… He’s fine... He’s fine. Please be fine…
Karasuno now won the second set, switching sides and getting ready for the final set. Which will dictates who will move on and who will go home. Everything went smoothly, everything was going perfect. The score was 14:13, in Karasuno's favor, until suddenly, Hinata fell. Realizing what that nagging feeling was.
You and Hitoka looked at each other in shock, not believing that Hinata would be sick. The two of you saw Takena-Sensei talking to Hinata.You and Hitoka went to go get Hinata, helping him with whatever he needs. First, making sure he got out of the sweaty close and into something else. Hitoka then went to go get other things while you stayed with Hinata, making sure he will be alright. You dug through your backpack, trying to find the medical supplies you carry with you. Seeing Kenma walking towards the two of you, Hinata asked, “Kenma-San…Do you have a way I can watch the match?”
As if Kenma knew what he was going to request, Kenma showed his tablet saying happily, “Yup. I can lend you this.”
As he leads it to Hinata, he walked away, fulfilling his quest. Finally founding the what you were looking for, you handed Hinata a mask, silently asking to put it on as you put one on as well. Hitoka came back with Hinata's jacket and scarf, the two of you made sure he was wrapped up, protecting him from the harsh winds outside.
“I’ll stay with Hinata, Hitoka,” you told the blonde softly.
“B-But,” Hitoka tried to said.
Shaking your head at her, you simply said, “The team needs you right now. Don’t worry, I’ll let you know if anything happens.”
Hitoka nodded her head, knowing that what you said was right. Hitoka went back to watch the game, showing her support when you went with Hinata to the front entrance of the stadium. Waiting for the two of you stood Makoto Shimada, who was escorting you out of the building. Walking to the sidewalk, Makoto told both of you, “Wait here. I’ll get us a cab.”
The two of you nodded, conforming that you heard him. Once he left, you saw Hinata looked back down at the tablet, staring hard at the game. Hoping to make him feel better, you asked him, “Can you put the volume up?”
With enthusiasm, Hinata nodded his head and turned the volume up. A few moments later, Makoto came back telling you that he got a cab. Following him, Hinata and yourself sat in the back while Makoto sat in the front, telling the driver the destination. Throughout the whole ride, you and Hinata watch the match, eager to know the outcome.
Arriving at the hospital, you thanked the driver as you exit the car. Following Makoto to the entrance of the hospital, you gently grabbed Hinata’s arm, dragging him around since he was so engrossed in the match. “Wait over there in the waiting room. I’ll go check-in,” Makoto said, pointing at the empty seats in the waiting room.
Softly dragging Hinata to the waiting room, you both sat down, watching the match. Both Karasuno and Kamomedai both played to their fullest, not giving up. You and Hinata both started at the tablet with wide eyes, seeing the ball drop on the Karasuno side. Kamomedai had won the match.
You looked at Hinata’s face, searching for any emotion he must be feeling right now. But you couldn’t tell. He was emotionless, something that was completely different from the regular Hinata you knew. “They are ready for you Hinata,” Makoto said, gaining our attention.
Hinata handed you the tablet asking you, “Can you hold on to this? Please?”
“Of course,” you said, grabbing the tablet and putting it in your bag pack.
Getting out of the seat, you and Hinata followed Makoto to a nurse. She escorted the three of you into an exam room. Once inside, the nurse told us that the doctor will be here shortly. Thanking her, Hinata sat on the side of the examination bed, looking down at his hands. Showing his phone, Makoto said, “I’m going to make a quick call. If you need anything, I’ll be outside.”
Once Makoto left the room, closing the door behind him softly, it becomes quiet. You didn’t know what to say.
Should I ask him if he was alright? No, you idiot, that's a dumb question.
“You know,” Hinata said, shocking you that he was the first to break the silence, “I kinda feel like I didn’t do enough.”
“W-what?” You asked, shocked by what he just said.
“I should have practice more, I should have taken care of myself better, eat the correct foods, and everything. I could have played longer.” Hinata continued.
“Hinata,” you said softly, knowing what he was thinking. Standing in front of him, you hold his clenching hand that was on his lap, hoping it would calm him down. Feeling his relax, you said softly, “You did what you could. I know you probably didn’t what to hear that but its true…”
You saw Hinata nodded, waiting for you to continue, letting out a sigh, “Only a few people know this but, my grandmother has these ridiculous standards of me. I did everything to please her, I even learned how to do a heart transplant.”
“A heart transplant?” Hinata asked eying you.
Rolling your eyes playfully, you moved so you were sitting next to him on the examination bed. Playfully saying, “Well I did practice on some teddy bears so, it’s not really reliable.”
The two of you chuckled softly, picturing a 5-year-old (y/n) doing a heart transplant on a teddy bear. The air in the room felt lighter, not like before when you two entered it.
You then got serious again, saying, “After a while, no matter what I could do, it was never enough. I wasn’t enough. I kept thinking, I should do this, or I should do that, and the stress of wanting to be enough for her caught up to me.”
Hinata looked at you in shock, wanting to know more, “What happened?”
“Well, it was easy for me to run away, my grandmother completely loathed me and I wanted to stop pleasing her. But I didn’t want my parents and brothers to worry about me, so made her a deal,” you said with a far off look in your eye, “I would be able to live a normal life. Go to school, make friends, just enjoy life. But in return, I would leave my family, not take part in anything family-related. I would be kept a secret, stay hidden from the outside world. I agree with it, letting go of everything.”
“You gave up,” Hinata said, concluding what you said.
Nodding your head, sadly saying, “I gave up. Yet, I still seek her approval. She gave me a proposal a few weeks back, giving me ten years to think about it. If I accept it, then she will be welcoming me back. Getting her approval.”
“What was the proposal?” Hinata curiously asked.
“It’s nothing for you to worry about,” you answered.
Hinata sat there, thinking about all the things you just told him. Processing the life you went through and the sacrifice you made. He looked at you, cautiously asking, “Is all that true?”
You looked at him with sad eyes, putting a hand on his shoulder, you nodded your head saying, “All what I just said…Was a lie.”
Once those words fell from your lips, Hinata froze in shock, think the whole story was real. Softly chuckling at him, seeing his wide eyes. Stuttering out, Hinata said, “But you made it so real! Why would you lie about that?”
Laughing at him, you then answered, “It made you think of something else. I wanted to help you get rid of those bad thoughts and it work.”
Getting out of the examination bed, you stand in front of Hinata, seeing his eyes look more determined and lighter, hearing him happily said, “Thank you.”
“Anytime,” you said softly.
Before anything else was said, there was a knock at a door. Opening the door, stood a man in a doctor's coat, ready to exam Hinata. Letting him in, you told them that you’ll be waiting outside the door, not wanting to intrude of the examination. Walking into the hallway, you sat on the chair that was near the door, glad that Hinata believed that everything was a lie.
The Ace|| Smau!!
Kurooxreader
Chapter 6|| Here comes Bokuto
Synopsis: you stepped down from being being the girls national ace and transferred to Nekoma where you met your biggest fan
Masterlist
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Okay boys it's very simple okay" Once everyone got off from the bus, you were sent to set up everything for the team, clean clothes, food and even water bottles had to be clean out and put in clean water.
Meanwhile you were gone the boys took the chance to make up a plan so Bokuto won't steal you away. "You guys are exaggerating" Kai mumbles face palming to this dumb act.
"Shut it Kai, I'm with Kuroo, Fukurōdani already has managers and we never had managers before!" Yaku pouted crossing his arms, "you look cute Yaku" Lev smiles making Yaku grumble at him, "watch it" Yaku glares at the tall first year, "what? I didn't call you short" Lev really did it. The team just turned away while Yaku was beating Lev up.
"Guys help!!" "Do you hear something?" Kuroo asks Kai, "nope not a single thing" Kai shook his ignoring the cries of pain that Yaku inflicted on Lev.
Yamamoto was holding his laughter in but turned serious because the plan needed to be done.
"In order to save y/n from Bokuto's disease we have to make sure she doesn't make contact with him" "I agree" Yamamoto nods, "wait what if he is talking to y/n what do we do then? Inouka asks, "duh we lock him into the closet and tell Akaashi afterward" Yamamoto rolled his eyes "good thinking Yamamoto" Kuroo high fives his second year, "do you have anything to say Kenma?" Kuroo asks Kenma who was playing on his DS on the side, "make sure y/n has someone on the team by her side in all time" he sighs rolling his eyes "PERFECT KEMMA" the team claps for his suggesting, "if Bokuto does anything funny come and tell me so I can beat him up" Kuroo tells his team while the 1st years were nodding at their captain, it amazed how Kuroo can make the 1st years follow his instructions.
Teams started to come shortly after Nekoma, of course Nekoma greeted each team that came.
"Long time no see crows” Kuroo and Daichi shakes hands, "it's always great to see you guys" Daichi smiles at Kuroo starting some type of rivalry, crushing each other hands.
Yamamoto was telling Tanaka about you how beautiful and wonderful you were but Tanaka thought it was a joke, "no can be more beautiful then Kiyoko" Tanaka brushed it off making Yamamoto glare at him.
Hinata was jumping up and down searching where you were, "CALM DOWN DUMBASS!" Kageyama shouted at Hinata who kept bumping into him, "wow look at you losing your cool" Tsukishima hissed rolling his eyes at the dumb duo.
You finally come out to meet Karasuno, "Hello nice to meet you Karasuno" You come into the picture which made each of the team shocked, you were something different.
Kageyama’s jaw dropped once he sees you, Hinata was oozing of excitement to talk to you. "Hello" each of them bow , which confused you, "no need to be formal I'm Nekoma's manager I'll be at your service during training camp" you smile wrapping your arm around Kenma who laid his head on you shoulder.
"Wow- You're beautiful!" Nishinoya was all over you asking you so many questions that you couldn't answer.
Kuroo stepped in grabbing Nishinoya's collar and drop kicking him.
"Sorry boys but she's off limits!" Kuroo wraps his arm around your shoulder pulling you towards him, "Yea off limits!" The 1st years shout, "Yea Yea I have to do something inside" you pat Kuroo's chest "I'll see you around Karasuno" you bid goodbye walking into the building.
"She's amazing" Kuroo whispers watching you take your leave flawlessly, turning to face Hinata, "Chibi come here!" Hinata bounces over to Kuroo. "Knowing Bokuto he will come see you first, make sure to tell me he's here" Kuroo explains to the 1st year who was obviously confused. "Why?" "Just because" "okay I will!" It was so easy to convince Hinata to help, meanwhile other teams were drooling over you and Kuroo didn't even make an effort to stop it knowing they wouldn't dare try anything but Bokuto he's a dangerous man.
"Hey guys Fukurōdani is late" You walked up to your team, "they'll be here" that there is more time to make plans for you never get in contact with Bokuto.
"HES HERE!" Hinata dashes into the hall panting. "Huh Hinata are you all right" before he could even answer you, one of the other managers called you over to come help out for bit, "that's my cue I'll see you guys around okay, do your best" you smiled walking out luckily Bokuto was late to see you, a wild Bokuto come in, "hey Kuroo!" Bokuto comes in with a huge smile displayed on his handsome face along with a serious Akaashi trailing behind him.
"Where is y/n?" he pops the question making Kuroo scowl a bit, "She's sick and couldn't make it unfortunately" Kuroo sadly sighs, "oh really" Bokuto pouted a bit in disappointment, "it's okay though you'll see her one day" Kuroo pats his friends back.
Akaashi sighed disappointed that Bokuto really believed Kuroo, "let's go play" Kuroo smirks ushering Bokuto to the court where his happy place was at. You were busy helping out the other female managers unpack, "Our captain Bokuto was really excited to meet you" Yukie grinned at your tiny body that she literally gushed about for 20 minutes to Kaori.
"Huh?" "Oh you haven't met our captain Bokuto" "no I haven't yet" Kaori smiled widely "he couldn't stop talking about you at all, I think it gave the others a headache including Akaashi" Yukie explained giving you an idea, "oh Kuroo has told me about them a few times" you smile to yourself, Kuroo told you that Bokuto once got trapped in the net and made a big mess and the coaches had to cut the net up.
"So it's true what Bokuto said" Kaori grins bouncing a bit, "Tell you what?" "That you are dating Kuroo of course!" Yukie rolled her eyes as she pats your back, "Have you seen the way he looks at you?" Kiyoko joins the conversation, "it's almost looks like he would take a bullet for you" Kiyoko's comment made your heart swell. "I guess we are" you mumble into your jacket, you didn't think what both of you were, you just enjoyed each other's presence instead.
"I guess it's almost dinner time I'll tell the boys dinner is ready" you get off the stool.
"Oh by the way be careful,Bokuto is quite jumpy" Yukie warns, you laughed a bit, "thanks for the heads up" you smiled leaving the room.
"She's beautiful!" Yukie melts to the ground.
You walk into the hot gym where the guys were practicing really hard, "Kuroo dinner is almost ready" you called Nekoma's captain, he instantly catches the ball giving you a smile.
Before you knew it you were picked up from the ground. "You're even stunning up close yet so small but so strong!" A white spiked hair boys grins right at you, you guessed it was Bokuto that Yukie and Kaori were talking about before.
"And you must be Bokuto?" You cock your head to the side, Bokuto almost bursted into joy as he sets you down gently. "OI WHAT DID I TELL YOU!" Kuroo shouts from the back but he was ignored by Bokuto.
"It's really an honor to get to know you y/n" he smiles. "I'm really happy to know you too Bokuto" you pats his shoulder gently.
Kuroo and the rest were pouting, Bokuto will use his dumb charms and take you away from them, "y/n will you g-" before he could say anything Kuroo covers his mouth, "He doesn't know how to read,spell or speak well he came from a different county or planet no one has heard of" Kuroo tells you in order Bokuto won't ask you a dumb ass question.
Leaning to the side "oh really?" You crosses your arms, "it's dinner time, go wash up and meet me at the Cafeteria okay!" You warned your team, giving Bokuto a big smile you leave the gym making Bokuto combust, Kuroo let's him go with cold glare.
"Hey hey Bokuto are you okay?" Konoha pokes his captain who was frozen like stone. "He'll snap out of it lets go eat" Fukurōdani leaves the gym first leaving their poor captain alone, Kuroo pushed him slightly. Bokuto instantly snaps out of it, "Okay bye Kuroo have to make moves on y/n!" Bokuto bounce out the gym to cafeteria left Kuroo Dumfounded.
"You DAMN OWL!"
As everyone has washed up a bit, all the managers started to attend to the teams , you of course attended Nekoma, filling their cups with water and even cracking up some jokes.
Looking around the room, you realized that Fukurōdani had empty cups.
Yukie and Kaori were very busy you decided to help.
"Hello guys" you greet them before you could fill their cups Lev and Inouka stopped you from it, "They can do it y/n they have hands" they shoo you off to the kitchen, shrugging it off you leave to the kitchen. The 1st years made sure to glare at a pouting Bokuto.
For the next few days of training camp, Nekoma was overprotective over you, you didn't really notice and sometimes you did but you thought maybe every team was protective of their managers. Every time Bokuto wanted to help you Yaku or Lev would already done it for you, Bokuto tries to feed you food, Inouka already got it covered even Hinata chipped in, like when Bokuto jogged with you in the morning Hinata is already next to you pushing Bokuto off the hill where he just rolls in confusion.
Whenever Bokuto tries to flirt with you Kuroo pushes him or drops kicks him whenever.
One night you couldn't sleep and decided to sit outside for a bit. "Y/n" Kuroo was behind you softly calling out your name, "Tetsu" You mumble, "Hey" he sat next to you, “can’t sleep?” “Nope”
You were about to ask something but you felt some cold water splash you, “BOKUTO!” Kuroo shouts, you bursted out laughing once you see Kuroo soaked in cold water, “I hope that’s refreshing!” Bokuto runs off, “oi!” Kuroo drops his phone on to the ground almost breaking it dashing where Bokuto ran off to.
“Kuroo be careful!” You whisper shout as you heard Bokuto scream for mercy. “Ugggg I tried to stop him” a sleepy Akaashi plops down next to you, “they’ll be fine just watch and enjoy”
You watch Bokuto burst into laughter as Kuroo gently punches him “this what get you damn owl!”
“Bokuto is just doing this to bother Kuroo” “oh I know Bokuto already told me two day ago” you smile widely, “so like you’re fine with this?” “I guess” you two watch Bokuto and Kuroo playfully wrestle with each till the coaches scolds them for making so much noise.
In end they got scolded and you just dried Kuroo’s hair. “You should’ve been quiet” “Yea Yea I know, now we have to get up at five a.m to jog” Kuroo pouts obviously angry at Bokuto, making you smile a bit. You gently held his face into your hands. “You know he’s joking about asking me out” “WHAT?” “Shhh you’ll get yelled at again and yes he wanted to tease you” you reveal the truth of Bokuto’s dumb plan.
“Stupid owl” he hisses as he nuzzles his cheeks onto your palm. “Let’s go to bed you have a long day ahead of you” pulling his face closer to you. You gently give him a kiss on the side of his mouth barely touching his lips.
“Goodnight Tesu” “Good night y/n” you disappear in the darkness leaving a happy Kuroo behind.
Stepping off the bus, you stretched your limbs out as much as you could, trying to rid yourself of the aching stiffness that came with sitting in the same place for who knows how many hours. You had spent every single one of those hours asleep, of course, but that didn’t take away the grogginess or the pins and needs you were currently experiencing.
“Rei-chan!” It had barely been an entire minute since you had set foot off of the vehicle, and you were already being lifted up in someone’s arms. This wasn’t exactly how you had imagined your day starting, to be honest.
“Bokuto-san, please put her down.” Along with the owl-haired ace, always came his setter. And it was a good thing he did, or you don’t think your feet would ever be on the ground with Bokuto around. He reluctantly set you down with a pout and you smiled gratefully at Akaashi.
“You better be careful, Kageyama,” A new voice appeared behind you, and you turned to find that it, of course, belonged to Tsukishima, who was sporting that usual stupid smirk on his face.
“Your boyfriend is just over there. You wouldn’t want to make him jealous now, would you?” Following his eyes over to where the Nekoma team were greeting the third years, you let out a scoff as you realised that he was referring to Kuroo.
“Suck it, Tsukki.” His smirk somehow grew wider and you rolled your eyes as he began to walk past you. He stopped right next to you and bent down, so that his mouth was directly by your ear, his lips almost grazing the skin of your neck. Attempting to supress a shudder, you tried not to show how tense you had been around him lately, especially with him so close to you.
“I think that’s your job, princess.” With that, he was gone, and you were absolutely bewildered. So now you had two different boys calling you pet names? Was there any chance you were still dreaming? Because it felt like it.
“Boyfriend?” You shook your head at Bokuto and Akaashi sent you a sympathetic look. There was definitely no doubt that this was going to be along week.
The coaches were quick to get into matches, and to be honest, so were you. It took your mind off of whatever was going on with that encounter this morning and gave you something to focus on instead of that. At least this training camp was already going better than the last one, with all of the team here at the same time and ready to get started.
The first match of the day happened to be against Fukurodani, and you were already beginning to feel an oncoming headache. It should be illegal for one single human to be that loud, and yet you were friends with him. At this point, you wouldn’t be surprised if Akaashi’s hearing was severely impaired.
In reality, you really didn’t mind it. The buzz of the teams getting ready to play made it feel like an actual tournament, and that was definitely something you had missed dearly.
However, you were still worried about how well the team was going to be able to play. Having still not made up with your brother since the fight, you had no idea what he had been working on or how he was doing aside from the small details Kiyoko had been trying to slip into your conversations with her. But what you were really concerned about was whatever was going on between him and Hinata. As far as you were aware, they hadn’t spoken a word to each other outside of practice in the past two weeks, and even then they kept contact to a minimum. It meant that you had no idea how this game was about to go, or how the team was going to pull off the new attacks.
Either way, the game was about to start, and you took your seat of the side of the court to keep watch.
Fukurodani started off with a solid serve, which was neatly received by Nishinoya, who sent it over to your brother. You watched as he tensed, clearly realising that it was the perfect opportunity to try and execute a quick attack. Hinata must have realised this as well, as he shot forward, running for the ball.
Hinata drew his arm back to spike and… nothing.
The ball was too short.
The toss itself was completely different to what you remembered. Tobio’s usual toss never missed the spiker’s hand. It was only been two weeks since you had seen him play properly. Had you really missed that much?
You jumped when the whistle blew, and the coach looked at you strangely.
Maybe he had finally gotten that stick out of his ass like you had told him to do. Rolling your eyes at your own thoughts, you focused back on the match. That missed toss meant that Fukurodani was already in the lead and the game hadn’t even properly begun yet.
The same set up happened once again; serve, receive, toss.
And miss.
This time it was too long.
Suddenly, Hinata’s left hand shot out to save the ball, bouncing it off of his wrist in an attempt to save it. The ball went up, caught the top of the net, and barely just landed within the bounds of the opposite side of the court. You let out a breath of relief, shock etched onto your face. Since Hinata had been practicing with Ukai’s grandfather, you hadn’t seen much of his progress, but it seemed as though he had changed a lot more than you thought as well. It was like you didn’t even know the duo anymore.
The game continued at a relatively quick pace, and you finally got a glance at Asahi’s improved serve in an actual match environment. You and Noya had been helping him practice, and he had made big progress in terms of power, but the actual success rate of the spike was still low.
The whistle blew and the ball was in the air. The ace spiked it with as much power as he could muster, and you crossed your fingers behind your back.
“Out, out!” The other libero stepped to the side and the ball did indeed land just outside on the very back line of the court border. You watched as Asahi clicked his tongue in frustration.
“Almost there Asahi! One more!” You cheered in encouragement and he smiled at you gratefully from his position on the court.
Next to be tested was the synchronised attack, which to be perfectly honest, you didn’t have much hope for just yet. Sugawara set the ball and all four spikers ran towards the net at varying speeds, all jumping to throw off the blockers. However, the ball missed its intended target and dropped to the floor.
Sighing, you rested you head in your hands and thought about what to do to help them correct their mistakes. The preliminaries for nationals were next month. Would it be possible to get all of these new skills up to par in time to have a fighting chance?
“Sorry! Cover!”
“I got it!” Noya sprinted forward, jumping right before he crossed the back line and rotated his body to get ready for a toss. Although, he had jumped too far and missed the ball completely.
“It’s fine, Noya! Get the next one!” He sent you a thumbs up, but he was clearly getting a bit frustrated. You really couldn’t blame him. Everyone was.
All of a sudden, it was match point for Fukurodani, and it was Bokuto’s turn to spike. But Tsukishima’s block was too weak, meaning he easily hit right through it, winning the set. You rested your knees on your elbows and tilted your head down to massage your temples. That block could be so much better, especially with the advantage of Tsukishima’s height, but he just refused to get any better.
One thing that you definitely didn’t miss from playing volleyball was the penalties, not that Shiratorizawa lost very often. This camp’s punishment for losing was a dash up the steep grass hill just outside of the gym doors.
You had a feeling that there was going to be a lot of running up that hill this week.
As you expected, Karasuno lost every single one of the games that they played on that first day. It was sad to say that you could genuinely count all of the games you had watched them win on only one hand. Of course you wanted them to win, they had all been working unbelievably hard for it, but it felt as though there was something missing from the team and you just couldn’t put your finger on what it was.
~~~
“What’s up, peaches? You’re all pouty.” You tugged the lollypop from your mouth with a ‘pop’ and pointed it at him accusingly.
“Kuroo, I’m literally allergic to peaches.” Bokuto burst out laughing, clutching the ball he was holding to his stomach.
“Seriously? Show me.” Was this boy completely brainless?
“No, Kuroo. I could die.” Bokuto was practically on the floor at this point and you even saw Akaashi snickering behind him as well. You shook your head in amusement and cracked a smile, putting the lollypop back in your mouth.
“Hey, isn’t he from Karasuno, Rei?” Standing up, you jogged over to the door and peeked you head around the frame, your eyes immediately spotting Tsukishima approaching the gym. An idea popped into your head and you quickly hid out of his sight.
“Look, do me a favour and invite him to play with you? Please?” They looked extremely confused at your sudden request and you panicked, as he was about to walk by the door.
“Just make him block for you? I’ll owe you.” Kuroo and Bokuto shared a smirk and you grinned up at them.
“Sure thing, cupcake.” Since he was doing you a favour, you allowed the nickname just this once and made you way to go and sit back on the bench. Lev was still sprawled out on the floor where Kuroo had left him and you poked him with your foot, receiving no response in return. Had the captain really made him practice that much? Or was he dead?
“Oh, hey, you? Karasuno! You with the glasses!” Bokuto was already stretching in preparation and you admired how serious they were being. At least they were getting some extra practice out of the situation.
“Could you jump some blocks for us?” There was a pause, and you straightened your back in anticipation.
“Actually, I’m done for the night. Excuse me.” Was he seriously rejecting the offer to train with the two strongest teams in Tokyo? Oh, you were going to strangle that boy.
“It’s meaningless to spike without blockers. I beg you!” Sighing, you turned yourself to the side and laid down on the bench. Had it really been the best idea to ask those two to get him to practice?
“Besides, if you’re a middle blocker, shouldn’t you practice blocking a bit more?”
Kuroo Tetsurou, huh?
Big shot powerhouse captain?
Whatever.
Maybe Tsukishima could know him down a peg, the cocky bastard. What was so great about him anyway? He didn’t look special.
You sat up just as the blonde walked into the gym, his eyes meeting yours instantly. He scoffed with a roll of his eyes.
Of course, you were here, with Kuroo. Why would you be anywhere else?
At his poor attitude, you pulled the lollypop out of your mouth again and blew him a raspberry, showing him the stripe of colour staining your tongue.
“That’s disgusting.” You scowled at him.
“Blue tongues are cute.” So what if they were? But if he thought that, then he’d have to admit that the way the sleeves of your hoodie almost completely covered your hands was cute too, and it definitely wasn’t.
He shook his head and readied himself to block, missing the thumbs up you had sent the two captains, but he may have caught the subtle wink Kuroo had sent you in return. With a huff, he began cracking his knuckles and circling his wrists, having already seen first-hand how powerful the ace’s spikes were.
You watched carefully as they played, and it was exactly as you thought. Tsukishima’s mind was utterly amazing. He was impressively observant, and payed close attention to all of Bokuto’s movements. After only a few spikes, he was managing to more or less predict Bokuto’s decisions, which would have been great… if he could actually stop any spikes.
It was obvious that Bokuto was going easy on him. Tsukishima’s blocks were some of the weakest you had ever seen. It was slightly annoying. He was that condescending and yet even you could block better.
Kuroo soon ended up joining the blocker, who didn’t look very happy about it, and together they were actually able to stop a spike. It really wasn’t surprising though, since Kuroo was one of the best blockers in Tokyo.
“Specs,” Oh, you were definitely using that one.
“You have a good read on things, but you know, your blocks are pretty weak. I get worried that I might break your arm in two or something.” You could almost physically see the nerve that Bokuto hit with that remark. You bit your lip to stop yourself from laughing.
“I’m still a growing boy! I have a ways to go in both muscular strength and height,” That was it. You burst out laughing, throwing your head back so far you almost fell off of the bench. That was the most ridiculous thing you had ever heard him say.
“If you take things too easy, shorty will take all the glory from you.” Suddenly, you weren’t laughing anymore. You knew Kuroo had horrendous timing, but you had barely just managed to get Tsukishima to practice for once.
“You guys play the same position, right?” You frantically gestured for Kuroo to shut up, but he clearly wasn’t getting the message.
“I don’t think I can do anything about that. There is an obvious difference in potential between Hinata and me.” Your hands fell into your lap as you stared at the boy with furrowed eyebrows. After everything you had told him and tried to encourage him with, he still felt like that? Were you even helping at all?
As if it couldn’t get any worse, the other members of Nekoma’s team began to shuffle into the gym one by one, interrupting the mini practice.
“Well, it looks like I’ll be in the way. So, if you excuse me.” Dumbfounded, you merely gaped at the blond as he collected his things and walked out of the gym.
“Kuroo Tetsurou, I will physically shove an entire volleyball up your ass! Why would you say that?” You shot him a fiery glare before running after Tsukishima.
“Oi, Tsukki.” You caught up to him a fair distance from the gym. Although, you weren’t expecting him to practically growl at you as he turned around, a look of pure anger on his face.
“Tsukki?”
“Don’t call me that!” Stunned, you could only blink at him. You were at a loss of what to say. Anger was not an emotion you associated with Tsukishima, since he always remained so calm and collected. You didn’t like it.
“Why must you try so hard?” Déjà vu hit you like a brick, your breath hitching as you tensed at the words. Ushijima’s face flashed in your mind for a second and you broke eye contact with Tsukishima. Shaking it off, you turned back to him with a hard look on your face.
“I’ve told you. If you don’t get your shit together soon then the team is going to lose. Have you seriously not realised that the only thing Hinata has going for him right now is his speed and his jump? Even if they are so good, they’re no use if you can’t block anything. Whenever Hinata scores a point, they’ll just score one right back!” You were getting unbelievably irritated with him at this point.
“You are the only one on the team that isn’t doing anything to improve. If you carry on like this, they’ll take you off of the regular roster, and then what? You’ll get replaced, just like you seem to want.”
“Of course I don’t want that!”
“Then act like it, Tsukishima!” He knows that he was the one to ask you not to call him by that stupid nickname, but actually hearing anything other than that being spoken by you felt so wrong. How had you even gotten to this point? You were meant to tease each other, not actually argue.
“Go back to your boyfriend. I’m sure he’s jealous that you’re out here with-“ Before you knew what you were doing, you had slapped him. His head was forcibly turned to the side harshly, and your hand stung from the impact.
You had nothing left to say to him. He obviously wasn’t going to listen to you. With a shake of your head, you turned the opposite direction to him and walked off without another word.
Kuroo wasn’t your boyfriend.
So why did it hurt so much that Tsukishima thought that he was?
~~~
It seemed that Karasuno’s losing streak would continue into the next day. Even you were getting tired of all the penalties and you were only watching on from the side-lines.
The team had played three matches so far, and while their scores were generally pretty consistent, it didn’t really seem like they were making any improvements in their attacks. It was a shame, really, especially because you knew how hard they were working.
You and Kiyoko were currently handing out the boys’ water bottles and you paused as you reached Tsukishima. He looked like he was struggling, and you couldn’t help but feel sorry for him, even if you knew that his lack of stamina was most likely because he never seemed to do any extra practice.
When he noticed you stood in front of him, he looked up, slightly shocked. You held the bottle out to him, and he took it hesitantly, looking as though he had something to say to you. Without giving him the chance, you nodded briefly at him and moved on, not saying a word.
He frowned at your back as you walked away. You were completely right to be mad at him, but he couldn’t understand why he had gotten so irritated in the first place. Your life had nothing to do with him.
So why couldn’t he take his eyes off of you?
~~~
Finally, after a few more losses, it eventually came to the last match of the day, and Karasuno was against Ubugawa once again. They were quite a bit behind, and you could tell that everyone was getting more desperate now. With the new attacks barely improving, it was all they had or nothing at all.
You gasped as Daichi and Nishinoya crashed into each other quite roughly, and you gripped your notebook tighter, feeling the eyes of a few people immediately land on you. Despite the rising anxiety in your chest, you kept yourself rooted firmly to your seat and forced yourself to calm down. Tensions were high and you could feel the pressure tingling in the air around you.
“Everyone’s into it like never before. It’s almost scary” Kiyoko distracted you, bringing your attention away from the game for a few moments, and you could already feel your mind easing slightly. You nodded at her, agreeing. It was definitely scary, and you didn’t know how to handle it.
“It’s coming on the left!” Your eyes caught sight of the ball as your brother received it. With him now unable to set, Tanaka took his place, sending the ball over to the left side of the court.
“Asahi-san!” Your breath hitched as your eyes flit over to Hinata, watching him stare at the ball as if he were about to devour it.
But just as you were going to begin panicking again, he paused, and then backed up a step, making way for Asahi to spike the ball as he planned. The ball hit straight through the blockers and hit the gym floor with an overwhelming amount of force. Raising your eyebrow, your lips twitched up into a half-smile, the ace’s sheer determination shifting the entire atmosphere of the game.
“Hinata was so close to spiking that ball.” You chuckled, now completely calm and relaxed. Asahi clearly wasn’t letting Hinata overshadow him, and he was doing a good job of it.
You found yourself turning your gaze to look over at Tsukishima, studying him as he looked between the other two players. There was definitely something different about his expression. It was only slight, but it was there. You smirked as you watched him clench his hands into fists at his sides.
Finally.
~~~
Sighing, you shoved your hands deeper into the front pocket of your hoodie. The hope you had of Tsukishima actually wanting to improve was at its end. He was still refusing to take up any offers of extra practice, and you weren’t sure what more to do.
You had really gotten excited with the way he was beginning to look at the court, but it seemed that your expectations had been set too high. He had rejected Bokuto yesterday, and you were sure he would do the same today, so you had decided to stay away from the boys’ group practice for the night, since it was getting more and more difficult to hide your disappointment.
It really was a shame. He didn’t see just how much potential he had, and he was letting it all go to waste. You wanted to see him do better. If there was anyone that could manage to block against the great Ushijima Wakatoshi, it would be Tsukishima.
Despite the nice warm weather recently, there was a refreshing cool breeze at night, and the darkness of the school’s grounds made it much more relaxing to wander about during the late evenings. It allowed you to think – properly think – and figure out exactly what was going on inside your mind.
Rounding a corner, you spotted Yamaguchi seemingly arguing with Tsukishima. Quickly hiding yourself back behind the corner of the building, you peeked your head around slightly, listening in.
“On the off chance that we get to the national championships, what’s beyond that? There is always better, and even better. It’s endless.” For someone so unnecessarily tall, he really couldn’t see over things, could he? He was just so pessimistic.
“Even if you are able to show some results somewhere, you’re never going to be number one! You’re going to lose somewhere!” Your eyes widened as he shouted at his friend, your fingers clutching the cuffs of your sleeves.
“Everyone knows that! So, what is the driving force behind everyone?” His words brought you closer and closer to intervening, but something in you was telling you to leave it for Yamaguchi to handle. You had done enough, for now.
“What-“ Your breath caught in your throat as you watched the smaller boy lunge forward, catching the blocker by his shirt.
“-the hell else do you need outside of your own pride?” Oh, yeah. Yamaguchi could definitely handle this. You were mildly impressed, especially when you saw the look in Tsukishima’s eyes. Clearly, you weren’t the only one getting frustrated at the boy, and it was nice to see Yamaguchi so outwardly driven for someone else’s sake.
“To think…” Tsukishima’s voice was low, so you barely heard it from where you were stood, but Yamaguchi backed up as if his hands had caught fire, looking slightly intimidated.
“That a day like this would come.” Your lips parted and your jaw slackened slightly as the clouds parted, shrouding the two boys in moonlight. Tsukishima tilted his head up to look down at his friend with an actual smile on his face. You couldn’t help but gape at him. When he wasn’t glaring you down or spitting insults your way, he was actually… attractive.
He was what now?
Impossible.
The two of you hated each other’s guts, and yet now you were practically drooling over him because he smiled?
You took a step backwards, hiding completely behind the wall now, and let you back rest against it as you looked up at the stars. Your heart was racing and your palms were beginning to sweat.
There was no reason at all for you to panic. Even if you did find him attractive, it wasn’t a big deal. Other girls must think he’s good looking as well, right? You just couldn’t see it before because you didn’t like him.
That’s all.
“Ugh.” Tugging your hood over your head, you pulled on the strings and tightened it. Adjusting it, you made sure that you could see, and your face was still visible before popping your head back around the corner.
Only to see that Tsukishima was gone.
“Of course,” It was just your luck. You waited a moment for Yamaguchi to start walking back to the gym before heading towards the only place the taller boy could have possibly gone. After the smile you had just seen on his face, he must have finally caved in, meaning that the hope you had started to lose may just be about to build up again.
Avoiding sprinting across the grounds like you desperately wanted to, you walked as fast as you could manage towards where you usually met Bokuto, Kuroo, and Akaashi when you helped them practice.
Luckily, you caught sight of the blond just as he stopped in front of the doors of the gym.
“Oya?”
“Oya Oya?”
“Oya Oya Oya?”
You kept yourself out of sight, rolling your eyes at the three boys inside.
“There’s something that I’d like to ask you. May I?” You couldn’t decide what shocked you more; the fact that Tsukishima was actually going to other people to ask a question, or that he was being so polite about it.
“Both of your schools are sometimes considered powerhouses, right?” Snickering, you covered your mouth to stop yourself from laughing. That had to hurt their poor egos.
“Well, yeah!” You could already imagine the grumpy frown probably sitting on Kuroo’s face and you bit your lip. They both must have looked so hilarious.
“Even if you were able to make it nationals, actually winning there would be difficult, right?” You furrowed your eyebrows. Of course, it would be. It’s nationals. There are teams there from every other prefecture in the country.
“But not impossible!” You briefly heard Akaashi attempting to calm Bokuto down and you envied his patience.
“I am genuinely curious about this. Why do you all get so serious about this? Volleyball is just a club, and maybe you’ll get to write, ‘I worked really hard in my club in high school,’ on your resume, right?”
“Just a club?” There was an undertone to Bokuto’s voice that you rarely heard, and you smirked to yourself, knowing Tsukishima was about to experience on of his rants.
“That almost sounds like someone’s name.”
“Oh, like Mary Club?”
“…”
You were friends with idiots.
They began to bicker, and you heard Bokuto whine at Kuroo.
“Say, four eyes,” While you were really enjoying these nicknames, how did he not know the poor boy’s name yet?
“It’s Tsukishima.”
“Say, Tsukishima. Is volleyball fun?” You scoffed, having already asked this and received no answer.
“No, not really.” Oh, you were so done with this boy.
“Maybe that’s because you suck at it?” You choked on your own saliva, laughing as quietly as you could manage so as to not attract any attention.
“I’m a third year, and I’ve gone to nationals. I’m better than you. Way better than you.” There really was no one who could inflate Bokuto’s ego like himself.
“You don’t have to tell me that.”
“But I only recently started thinking that volleyball is fun.” He lowered his voice and you couldn’t really make out what he said next, but you could tell that it was going to be oddly inspirational. After all, he had done the same thing for you last year.
“What happens next, whether you can win the next game… stuff like that doesn’t matter for now. Crushing the guy in front of you, and the exhilaration of using one hundred and twenty percent of your skills, is everything.” You knew that feeling all too well. You missed it so much. But you were working out your own way to feel that thrill again, and you just hoped that Tsukishima could do the same.
“But once that moment arrived for you, that’s the moment you’ll be hooked on volleyball.” There was silence for a moment, and you had hope that Tsukishima was about to change his perspective. You had experienced a speech like that from Bokuto first-hand, and it pretty much changed your life, and you knew the same thing was happening to the boy stood just a few metres from you.
It was so annoying.
“Are you being serious?” You stepped out from your hiding place and pointed at the owl-haired spiker.
“I’ve been trying to get that through to him for weeks now and he listens to you? You barely know his name!” Kuroo chuckled at you, or more so, your appearance. Realising that your hood was still tightened around your head, you cleared your throat, loosening the strings and pulling it down.
“Wow, don’t you look like you just-“
“Finish that sentence, Kuroo Tetsurou, and I will made damn well sure you can never finish another sentence ever again, you got me?” He nodded meekly, taking a step back as you began to fix your hair as best you could.
“So… now you’re both here, jump some blocks for us!”
~~~
“Kiyoko-senpai!” Skipping over to her, you garnered the attention of quite a few of the boys getting ready for their matches.
“Your ponytail looks really cute today!” You giggled at the blush it brought to her cheeks. It was a new day and you were finally beginning to get used to the early awakenings again. It had been a long time since you had felt this cheery in a morning,
“Rei-chan, that was adorable!” You smiled widely at the captain of Karasuno’s opposing team for this match as Fukurodani began warming up on the other side of the court.
“Thank you, Koutorou!” You made a heart with your forefinger and thumb and sent it his way before getting ready to begin your manager duties of the day. Kiyoko had already prepared the water bottles and the towels, meaning all you needed to do now was check in with the coach for him to give you a run-down of the game plan for today.
Having been their manager for almost two months now, you pretty much knew how each of the boys played and what methods they liked to use, so it was getting a lot easier to pinpoint exactly what they needed to work on. There was always something that you could help them, so your role was certainly never boring.
The match went on as many of the rest had in the past few days, with Karasuno lagging behind by a fair few points, which you knew was beginning to really frustrate them now. Takeda called for a time-out at Ukai’s request, and the team gathered round.
“Even if you’re not able to stop number four’s spikes, at least try to touch it.”
“He may not look it, but he’s very perceptive. He will find an open spot in your blocks and get through it. So, keep an eye on him, and keep your block formation tight.” Your eyes landed on Tsukishima as you spoke, more or less directing the words at him, and you noticed an unusually hard look in his eyes.
“We don’t have to stop it?” His eyes were trained on you, and you raised an eyebrow in response. Tsukishima never really talked during time outs, and it was clear that even the other boys were shocked by it.
“Well, if you can manage to shut out the ball completely then that’s perfect. Otherwise, no. Even just a fingertip can slow down the ball and give the others enough time to get it back into play.” It was subtle, but everyone could see that you were challenging him. You were nowhere near as good at provoking people as Kuroo seemed to be, but with the way he straightened his posture, his gaze never leaving yours, you were sure you’d managed to do at least something.
Fukurodani continued to score and keep the point gap fairly wide as they all carried on playing. Keeping watch on Tsukishima, you could tell something was definitely off with him, you just couldn’t tell whether it was a good thing or a bad thing yet.
The opposing libero received the ball nicely, sending it over to Akaashi as Bokuto called for a spike. Daichi and Tsukishima quickly moved in to block and you crossed your fingers behind your back. You really hoped that the tips your boys had given him last night had sunk in, and you guessed you were about to find out.
The blockers jumped and you watched in shock as Tsukishima towered over the net. His blocking form was so much better, and you could practically feel the waves of intimidation he was giving off from where you were stood at the side of the court. You gasped as Bokuto’s eyes widened, and in a split second switched his attack from a cross shot to a feint. It looked like it was the only thing that could make it over that block.
It was amazing.
Unfortunately, Noya couldn’t dive in time for the ball in order to dig it, and so the point went to Fukurodani.
“Wow, I definitely thought that he would come in with a hard hit right now! To think that it was actually a feint… Nothing less from a national-calibre ace!” You were still in awe. Tsukishima had made Bokuto switch attacks. To a feint no less!
“Bokuto never feints.” Ukai and Takeda looked at you curiously.
“He prides himself over his straight and his cross. It takes a lot to make him back down. And Tsukishima made him switch attacks mid-air.” Takeda seemed a lot more surprised now, and you couldn’t blame him.
You caught Tsukishima’s eyes as he walked away from the net and you gave him a sly smile. He was another puzzle piece clicking into its place and you couldn’t be happier.
He rolled his eyes at you and turned his head away to smile at himself where you couldn’t see. Although, Yamaguchi managed to catch him doing it and looked from him to you, who was now chatting happily with Kiyoko and the coach.
You looked back just as Tsukishima stopped near Hinata. It looked like he had finally stopped letting his fear of being overtaken by the little spiker scare him, and just like Asahi, he wasn’t going to be beaten.
All you needed now was Hinata and Tobio to make up, and the jigsaw would be complete.
~~~
The temperature of the camp was rising rapidly, both figuratively and literally. It was going to be a very hot summer and being at a training camp doing nothing but physical activity, was not helping. Along with that, the new attacks that the team had prepared still weren’t working, and it was beginning to take a toll on their motivation.
Despite practicing with each other every day, Hinata and your brother still hadn’t spoken a word to each other since their fight, and it was beginning to really worry you. If they didn’t get back to normal soon, you weren’t sure how well the team was going to cope.
However, you were even more concerned about the atmosphere in the gym right now. It was warm and everyone was beyond frustrated. Someone was bound to snap sometime soon, and it wasn’t going to be pretty.
Your breath hitched as Hinata and the tall first year from Nekoma both jumped up for the ball form opposite sides of the net and were caught in a joust. Unfortunately, Lev overpowered Hinata and the ball was sent back towards Karasuno’s side of the court, landing on the floor before Noya could dig it.
Focusing on Hinata, you noticed him looking extremely frustrated, even more so than usual. He bent over and rested his hands on his knees, breathing heavily. You had never seen him look so defeated, him usually bursting with limitless energy.
It was him.
He was going to snap.
And soon.
Karasuno were finally catching up in points, only three behind now. Hinata went in for a quick and you paused, slightly confused as you watch Tobio set the ball. Hinata barely managed to get his hand on the ball, only just getting it over Lev’s fingertips.
“Oh no,” Ukai glanced at you quickly, clearly concerned. So far, you had always been right when something was about to go terribly wrong, and he was beginning to trust your judgement. You knew Hinata had noticed it too, and you chewed on your lip in anticipation.
“Nice cover-“
“Hey!” The little spiker wasted no time, getting up, close, and personal with your brother, absolutely livid.
“You held back, didn’t you?” The team was clearly shocked, and you took a deep breath, trying to calm your rising anxiety.
“Held back? Me? With volleyball?” You blinked, confused. Had he not noticed it? But he’s the one that set it!
You stood up abruptly when Tobio clutched Hinata by the shirt, knowing full well what happened the last time they did that. You barely registered as Takeda called for a time out, only focusing on stopping the fight before it happened.
“Tobio, that was a different toss.” He slowly moved his eyes over to look at you, clearly irritated, but he looked surprised.
“That wasn’t the new toss. That was just a normal quick.” He let the shirt fall from his hand as he let the realisation sink in.
“It was?” You heard murmurs behind you, but you kept your focus on your brother. Walking over to the two, you placed a hand on his shoulder, pulling him away from the confrontation slightly.
“You just wanted him to hit it not matter what. It’s okay.” A million thoughts were going through his head right now, and for the first time since starting high school, he looked scared. Since he met Hinata, his confidence had been through the roof, but having failed so many spikes, Tobio just wanted him to spike one well, to cheer him up. But Hinata knew what he wanted, and he wanted to try the new toss until he could hit it. Tobio changing the toss, even subconsciously, might come across as a sign that he didn’t believe it would work, so of course the smaller boy was angry.
“Don’t stop trying, Kageyama!” He paused as you were leading him back to the bench, turning to look at his friend. His look hardened to one you were all too familiar with, and you broke out into a smile, letting you hand fall back down to your side. You carried on back to the bench without your brother, taking your place next to the coach.
“He’ll be fine.”
One more piece.
~~~
“Baka! Baka!” You stuck you tongue out at Tsukishima childishly through the net, and he scowled at you, but you could see he was fighting a smile by the way his lips twitched. He hadn’t said a word about the other night when you slapped him, and you hadn’t either, choosing to just enjoy the camp while it lasted. You could talk about things like that when you got back to Miyagi and things returned to normal.
For now, you were just happy that he had finally improved his blocks, and even caught Bokuto off guard. If he kept practicing, he could be a phenomenal blocker, maybe the best in the prefecture.
“Hey guys, did you bring a friend today?” You both looked over, spotting a certain fiery-haired spiker poking his head around the doorframe.
“What happened to your partner?”
“Kageyama is practicing by himself again.” Tsukishima glanced at you, but you shrugged at him. There wasn’t really a reason why he wouldn’t let Hinata practicing with him, but you could take a wild guess at what he was doing.
“So, can I practice with you?” You hadn’t played with Hinata since the mini practice match at the last training camp, and you began to get excited thinking about another one.
“Well since we have the right amount of people, let’s play a three-on-three.”
You don’t know how it happened, but you had been placed on a team with Kuroo and Tsukishima. It was obvious that there was a slight tension between the two of them, yet you couldn’t figure out why, unless you had missed something.
Rolling your eyes, you looked over at Akaashi through the net, only to see him with the same look on his face as you.
“Isn’t this a bit unbalanced?” While you were the shortest on your team, the owls had Hinata, who was the shortest out of all of you by almost half a foot. Even so, you could tell he was having the time of his life; playing with two powerhouse schools, three national-level players, and he was up against Tsukishima. It was more or less a dream come true.
And so, the game began. You had ended up as setter, and while you were slightly disappointed to not be spiking, you loved to set every now and then, and you hadn’t played in this position since you got the all-clear to practice from your doctor.
The ball was currently on the owl’s side of the court, and you watched carefully as your blockers ran int place, but Akaashi wasn’t that stupid. He set the ball to the other side of the court instead, Bokuto being the one to jump and spike it. The blockers tried to move but were just a second too late and you dove to save it. Although, Bokuto’s spiking speed was superhuman sometimes, and you couldn’t quite get to it in time.
“Make sure you jump straight up! Don’t jump sideways!” Tsukishima nodded at you wordlessly and got ready to block again. This time, the toss went to Hinata and the blocker grouped close together. Tsukishima took your advice and jumped straight upwards, completely blocking out the spike. You smiled at him as he looked back at you, and he avoided your eyes, a slight pink hue staining his cheeks.
“Bring it again!” You giggled at Hinata, stepping closer to the net to watch him get all fired up.
“Um…” All of your heads turned towards the doors to see two girls, who you came to recognise as Fukurodani’s managers.
“If you don’t wrap up soon, the cafeteria will close, and you won’t get any dinner.” You huffed at the interruption, but you knew you were hungry, and the boys clearly were as well, judging by their faces.
“Well, we can’t go into battle on an empty stomach.” Kuroo swung his arm around your neck and pulled you into what was more like a headlock than anything else, dragging you out of the gym.
“Kuroo! Let me go!” He chucked and loosened up, keeping an arm around your shoulders.
“Shorty! We’ll continue this tomorrow.” You could just hear Hinata’s squeal of excitement and it brought a small grin to your face. You tried to shrug the captain’s arm from around you, but he had a firm grip on you.
“Tetsu! You’re all sweaty!” He burst into his typical hyena cackle and you couldn’t help but laugh at how hilarious it was, his arm falling away from you. Eventually, Akaashi came and dragged him away from you and you managed to calm yourself down.
Looking back, you saw Tsukishima staring at you with a sour look on his face. He was fine just a moment ago, what could have possibly annoyed him already?
“What’s with that look? Are you coming?” He grumbled something as he caught up to you, the both of you walking side by side.
“You two seem close.” Realising he was talking about you and Kuroo, you huffed, glaring up at him.
“Why? Are you jealous?” Before he could respond, you took a step closer to him, grabbing his arm and pulling it around you, settling it around your neck. He tensed up and you leaned into him as you walked, your head almost resting on his shoulder.
With a splutter of words, he pulled himself away from you quickly, widening the gap between the two of you. The blush on his cheeks was visible to you now, bringing one onto your own face.
Maybe that had been a bit too forward.
Although, it was quite amusing to see Tsukishima so flustered, being so used to him being unbelievably standoffish.
Once again, you began to bicker, and you took that as a sign that the two of you were back to your usual selves. You still weren’t really sure what had even happened a few days ago anymore, but it was nice to have someone to take you mind off of all of the action every once in a while.
All that was left was for you to make up with your brother,
It couldn’t be that hard.
~~~
You strolled into the gym just as Tobio missed one of the bottles he was using as target practice.
Despite you having taught him how to set, yours and your brother’s method of playing were completely different. You had never found much use in an inanimate target, but then again, Tobio practically breathes accuracy, and that wasn’t your style.
Neither him nor the coach had noticed you enter, and you stuck around to watch a few of his tosses. He was so close to getting a grip on the new quick, and yet he was so far off at the same time. You sighed, pushing yourself off of the wall you were leaning on and walking over to pick up a ball form the basket.
“You can leave if you want, coach. I’ll take it from here.” Both boys were surprised, both at your sudden appearance as well as your offer to help your brother practice. Everyone had done a good job of keeping the two of you away from each other as possible since your argument, but now it was time to get over it and get serious.
“Are you sure?” You nodded, and he gave you a pat on the back, wishing you good luck. You patiently waited until he had collected his things and was out of the gym before turning towards your brother.
“You’re being stupid.”
“Huh?” The first thing you say to him after not speaking for three weeks was an insult? What sense did that make?
“There aren’t going to be a bunch of bottles lines up on the court, Tobio. So why are you still thinking of them as bottles?” He didn’t seem to catch your point, and you spun the ball around in your hands absentmindedly.
“The bottles aren’t going to be spiking your tosses; Hinata is. So, imagine the positions of the bottles, but with a spiker there instead.” His lips parted and his eyes widened slightly as he understood what you wanted him to try. He had never thought of it that way, and simply imagining a spiker there would be so much easier. He nodded at you and you smirked, knowing that he was finally in his element.
You took your place at the back of the court and tossed the ball you were holding over to him. It arched over his head and you watched as his eyes studied it, contemplating the best position to send it to. His fingers barely even touched the ball and it was flying over to the other end of the court, aiming for the fifth bottle in line.
The ball curved overhead and then slowly stopped in mid-air, before dropping straight down onto the bottle and toppling it over. You both stared at it for a moment, before realising that he had actually done it.
Without a second thought, you rushed over to him, pulling him into a congratulatory hug. He seemed stunned for a second, but as your arms settled around his neck, he moved to wrap his own around your torso, holding you gently.
When you pulled away, you reached a hand up to his hair to ruffle it, causing him you scowl at you.
“So, does this mean you’re good now?”
“Only if you throw me some more balls.” Oh, you’d throw him some balls alright. You took aim and threw the ball as hard as you could, making his face the intended target. However, he ducked just in time, smirking at you as he straightened back up.
What you weren’t expecting, was the ball rebounding off the net and flying straight back into the back of his head. You burst out laughing, falling to your knees as he rubbed his head where it hit him.
Yeah, he was good.
You both were.
~~~
It was finally the last day of the training camp. You couldn’t decide whether you were pleased about it or upset yet.
While you were definitely going to be happy about sleeping in your own bed for once and not being surrounded by a hoard of sweaty boys every day, you knew that you were going to miss your friends. Compared to people like Semi, it wasn’t like you could just pop over to their house every now and then to see them, with them living all the way over in Tokyo.
Being so lost in thought, you hadn’t realised that you were in someone’s way, causing you to bump into them.
“Ah! I’m so sorry-oh. Hey, Keiji.” He gave you a tired smile and bowed his head in greeting.
“We missed you at practice last night. Tsukishima asked about you.”
“Yeah, sorry. I was helping Tobio… wait. Tsukishima asked about me?” He nodded and you stood frozen in shock.
“He looked pretty disappointed that you weren’t there.” He what now? You could not believe your ears. You were sure he still hated you, at least a bit, and you were also pretty sure there was something really weird going on between the two of you right now. Although, you could never really tell what he was thinking, that stupid nonchalant expression he always had plastered on his face constantly throwing you off.
“Well, I’ll see you at the match later, okay?”
“Ah, yeah, okay.” You were so lost in your thoughts, you barely registered him walking away until he was gone, leaving you standing completely dumbfounded in the hallway.
~~~
Once again, Karasuno started off their day by losing against Ubugawa. Despite that, they were starting to finally catch up in points and could very well win a match by the end of the day. You hoped so, at least.
Tobio still hadn’t used the new quick with Hinata yet, which you were slightly disappointed at, but you knew that he was saving it for the perfect moment, so you kept quiet for now.
You watched on as the team did yet another dive lap around the court, noticing how much better some of them had gotten at it from losing so often. It might actually come to some use during games if they used it right. The other teams seemed to have noticed their improvement as well, both on the court and off of it.
Although, you were all just tired at this point. The endless losses really did take a toll on their motivation and it was heart-breaking to see. You had a good feeling about today though, and hopefully you were right about it.
Picking up the boys’ water bottles you turned to go over and hand them out, only to see them surprisingly refreshed and… dancing?
“Oh, meat, meat, meat, oh, meat, meat!” You gaped at them as they chanted, feeling the sudden urge to hide in embarrassment. What were they even doing?
“Hooray for meat! Energy times a hundred! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Meat is god! Meat is god!” You couldn’t do anything except stare at them, not being able to comprehend what you were witnessing.
“Guess they found out about the barbecue.” Kiyoko came to stand next to you, picking up a few water bottles to join you in handing them out.
“Well, if it gets them riled up that much, we might actually see them win a match.” She chuckled along with you and you finally brought yourself to look away from the group of boys, convinced that they had just accidentally started a cult.
“Kageyama!” You reached the power duo a few moments later, just as Hinata called out to your brother. Pausing mid-way through handing them their water, you kept a close eye on them in case another fight managed to break out, but you doubted that would be happening anymore.
“I want to hurry up and hit that falling toss!” Oh, the boys were in for a treat. And they were playing against Fukurodani next as well. You grinned in excitement.
“Don’t rush.” Your grin immediately fell into a pout, already beginning to sulk.
“As long as I’m missing the tosses, it won’t be any practice for you.” But he wasn’t miss-
Ohhhhhh…
Lips twisting up into a smirk, you handed the two boys their bottles and walked off, the curious eyes of a few team members following you as you made your way back to the bench. You smiled to yourself as they began to giggle, a wave of relief washing over you and you could see them falling back into how their friendship used to be.
Everything was finally working out.
Slowly, but surely.
Just before the match, the coach called the team into a huddle to give them some encouragement.
However, you weren’t expecting him to nudge you forward, signalling for you to be the one to give them their usual pep talk today. They all blinked at you, and you blinked back, not really knowing what to say.
“Right, I know you’ve all had a rough time over the past week, and that sucks. But now, I want you to get your asses out on that court and give this game everything you’ve got. I don’t care is all of the new attacks work or if it just end up being one of them. You’re going to get into this match and show everyone in this gym that you have what it takes to beat a national-level team. You got me?” There was silence for a moment, none of them having expected you to come out with a speech like that.
“Nice one, dumbass.”
“Suck it, specs.” Tsukishima glowered at you from the back of the group. He was just opening his mouth to retort when the referee blew his whistle, signalling the start of the match. You sent him a bittersweet smile and watched as he huffed, all of the boys moving over to the court to take their positions.
“You know, as unexpected as that was, I think it was exactly what they needed right now.” As you turned to the coach in surprise, he chuckled at you. The boys were the only ones that he had seen making improvements over the past couple of months. He would say that you were the one who had grown the most, even if you couldn’t quite see it yet.
“If they’re thinking about something unusual before playing, it kind of takes the edge off a bit.” He nodded, impressed by the strange logic, and you both turned to watch the match.
Asahi was first up to serve, and while he had been practicing the move almost every day, you knew the success rate was still lower than he’d prefer it to be. All he needed was one good serve to spike his confidence, and hopefully, this one would be the one to do the trick.
“Asahi-senpai! Nice serve!” He smiled gratefully at your cheer of encouragement and you smiled back as he visibly relaxed. He took a deep breath and tossed the ball high up into the air. His hand hit ball with a good amount of power, and it looked as if it would land just within the boundaries of the court, but the opposing team’s libero received it before it could touch the floor.
“It’s off!” While it was a decent receive, especially with how fast the serve had been, it looked slightly short and Akaashi was forced to take a step or two away from the net to set it.
“Bokuto-san!” The ace enthusiastically ran up for the spike as Tobio and Tsukishima prepared to block it.
Within a split second, Bokuto had hit the ball and it was rebounding off of Tsukishima’s hands towards Fukurodani’s side of the court.
“Yes, Tsukki!” Finally, he had managed to block a spike.
“Out!” Indeed, the ball landed outside of the court and you felt a scowl creep up onto your face. You had spoken a bit too soon. He caught your eyes none the less and you swear that you saw the corners of his mouth twitch upwards.
The match continued and Karasuno was managing to keep up with the points, steadily maintaining one-point gap.
Asahi managed to break through the other team’s blockers, only for it to me miraculously received and put back into play. Although, it was off once again, and Akaashi found himself quite a way back from the net this time.
Even so, he set the ball with ease, and the blockers didn’t even have time to move before the ball was in your side of the court, giving the opponents yet another point.
“Damn, Akaashi. Pretty boy likes to show off.”
“Pretty boy?” It seemed that Tsukishima had heard you, even from the court, since he was stood closest to you. His eyebrow was raised, and you could tell that his eyes were teasing you from the way they danced behind his glasses.
“Oh, shush. Get back to your game.” He chuckled as you glared at him. For some reason, the nickname didn’t bother him one bit. He was never bothered at all by Akaashi, he realised. Which is why he was struggling to understand why Kuroo had been irking him so much over the past week.
Nishinoya nicely received the next serve, sending it over to your brother for him to set up ready for Tsukishima to spike. While the spike was pretty great, it was still dug out by their libero, who you were beginning to get increasingly frustrated with. He was good, you’d give him that.
Bokuto called for a spike, and you watched carefully as the blockers moved into place. With the front row being full of solid players, you were sure that all three of them would finally be able to block one of the ace’s spikes.
Although, you were clearly mistaken.
The owl-haired spiker managed to hit an insane cut shot, the ball flying past all of the blockers and landing neatly in your side of the court.
You gaped at the boy, having never seen him pull off a move like that. He needed to teach you that as soon as possible.
“Did you see that. Rei-chan? Huh? Huh?” You giggled as you watched him resisting the urge to run off of the court towards, instead moving over to Akaashi to make him join in on getting your attention.
“Yes, Tarō-senpai, it was amazing!” Some of your team grumbled at you for encouraging the enemy, but you couldn’t just lie and say that it wasn’t incredible, because it was. Even Akaashi looked shocked at him for managing to pull off the move.
“It was pure luck though!” Excuse you? He did that by chance?
He burst out laughing, clearly having boosted his own ego through the roof and you rolled your eyes in amusement.
Even with the light-hearted attitude, Fukurodani was slowly but surely pulling away in points, widening the gap between the two teams. It didn’t seem to bother your team though, and they carried on like they had been all week; receive, set, spike.
Tobio tossed over to Hinata, and while you were bursting with anticipation at the prospect of seeing the new quick, it still wasn’t the right time yet.
The smaller boy jumped as high as he could manage, reeling his arm back ready to break through the blockers and…
Feinted.
His hands merely tapped the ball and lightly arched it over the blockers’ hands. The entire team stood in disbelief as the opposing players dove for the ball, only to miss it by a few centimetres.
You knew the feeling of looking down on the players you had managed to catch out with a trick like that in the middle of a game, and that was what Hinata was currently experiencing for the first time. Along with that, he was always having to look up at people wherever he was due to his height, so towering so far above someone for a change must be exhilarating.
“A feint?” Bokuto was being his usual overdramatic self, and you hid a snicker behind your hand.
“You’re the one that taught it to him, Bokuto-san.” You burst out laughing at the irony. This must have been what you missed by skipping out practice with them the night before.
Tobio looked as if he was malfunctioning, an expression of complete bewilderment on his face.
“You actually used your head? You’re gonna get a fever.” You couldn’t stop laughing, to the point where you were choking from the lack of oxygen. Kiyoko patted your back and handed you your water bottle, which you took gratefully.
“We’re not gonna lose!” At least Bokuto was still fired up. You knew that it would encourage your boys to prove him wrong, and you couldn’t wait to see how they were going to do it.
Karasuno continued their attacks and were beginning to catch up in points, Tobio even going for a setter dump.
“I’d say that he’s almost completely back to normal.” Ukai hummed in agreement, knowing that all the duo needed to do now was nail the new quick.
“It feels like the calm before the storm. Kinda scares me.” It was true, but you had seen him like this many times before. He was truly in his element now, and it was going to take quite a lot to knock him out of place again.
Point after point was scored, and the team was doing amazing. You were pretty sure that this was the best you had ever seen them play since you had become their manager and it was truly incredible. Everyone was working in synch and they were managing to keep the ball in play no matter what. The match was running so smoothly that you could barely keep track of it all.
You saw Hinata race towards the net out of the corner of your eye.
It was time.
Now was the perfect moment to try the new quick. At this point, and with how well they had been playing throughout this match, you knew they could definitely pull it off, and you knew your brother could see that as well.
And yet he still hesitated.
It was clear as day on his face that he was anxious, something you rarely saw him express. Whether he didn’t want to mess up the toss or ruin the good atmosphere, you knew he was about to miss out on his chance.
But Tobio could never deny Hinata something that he wanted to do so desperately.
He was ready.
His fingers made contact with the ball and he tossed.
The ball arched over to Hinata…
…and then stopped.
Hinata’s palm made contact with the ball, and then it was rebounding off of the opposite side of the court floor, the other players not even having time to blink. There was silence in the gym as everyone processed the movement.
It had worked.
“Yes, Tobio! Finally!” He didn’t seem to hear you though, his gaze shifting towards his partner before they erupted in shrieks of excitement. Although, even that didn’t last long, and they were already bickering not even seconds later. The whole team began to celebrate, especially since it was the first of their new moves to actually work, and after a very long week of trying, it gave them that last push of hope they needed to keep going.
You chuckled as you watched them, an expression of pure pride taking over your features. Tobio looked so happy, genuinely happy, for the first time in three weeks, and you were just glad that things were getting back to normal at last.
The final puzzle piece had settled into place.
~~~
There was really no stopping Karasuno today.
The match continued on and you could barely contain your excitement. They were still managing to keep up with Fukurodani in points, and their teamwork was better than ever.
Unfortunately, the new quick wasn’t exactly working out as well as everyone had hoped, and you winced as the toss came just a bit too short, making it impossible for Hinata to spike. The buzz from it working so well the first time must be distracting Tobio, but you were sure that he would shake it off soon.
Hinata managed to get a hand on the next spike, but your brother ended up being the one to receive it, meaning that he couldn’t set it. Noya immediately sprang into action, leaping in the air from just behind the back line. Rotating his body, the ball fell into his hands and he tossed it over to the spikers.
Asahi hit the ball with and impressive amount of force and sent it flying towards the floor, but it ended up landing just outside of the court boundary. Either way, it worked! That was the second of their new attacks to finally work after so long of trying.
“Nishinoya-san! That was incredible!” He was clearly upset about the attack not scoring them a point, but he relaxed considerably at your smile, giving you a thumbs up, which you returned.
The team kept up the pace, trying to close the gap in points completely. As Noya received another of Fukurodani’s spikes, you noticed everyone’s attitudes shift at once and you gulped. They were all so serious when they were on the court that it was scary sometimes.
“Now!” All for spikers began to run forward and you stared in awe.
Was this it?
Would it work?
One by one they jumped into the air and even you couldn’t figure out where the toss was going until Tobio set the ball, sending it over to Tanaka. He hit it just right and landed the ball in the court while the blockers were still distracted, earning the point for Karasuno.
“All right!”
“Yes, Tanaka-san! One more!” He looked as though he could cry, and you couldn’t imagine how they all felt with the attacks going as well as they were, especially after so much hard work.
Looking over at the other team, it looked as though Bokuto was beginning to get frustrated with their sudden improvement. Even Akaashi had an irritated scowl on his face.
After a few more points, they were really getting into the game. Asahi managed to score with his serve, the libero not being able to receive it due to the force, Tsukishima’s blocks were holding up nicely, getting a hand on the ball even if he couldn’t stop it, and the libero-set worked once again, Daichi managing to score the point this time.
A time out was called when both teams reached eighteen points, and you could more or less feel the buzz of confidence surrounding your players.
“If we can keep number four under control, victory is in sight.” You knew they were doing well, but you weren’t so sure that he was right.
“Don’t get too cocky though.” Their attention turned to you and you smiled at them slyly.
“As I‘m sure you’ve seen from a few other teams that you’ve played, a team is not just their ace. A proper team ensures that they don’t just have to rely on one player.” They looked as though they knew what you were saying but didn’t quite understand.
“With the way Bokuto is looking right now, you’re about to experience this first-hand, so get ready.” All you received in response was a bunch of blank stares, none of them quite knowing what you were getting at, but they agreed with you none the less. As they got ready to get back to playing, you caught Akaashi’s eye and you chuckled, knowing exactly what was coming.
Fukurodani managed to earn a point straight away to set them in the lead again, but you didn’t like the way Bokuto stalked off to the back of the court to serve. He was losing his temper majorly, and that was never good.
“All right! Here I go!” As usual, he tossed the ball up in the air and got ready to deliver his immensely powerful serve.
Only to serve it straight into the net beside Konoha’s head.
Bokuto fell to his knees in anguish, and you rolled your eyes at his dramatics while his teammates tried to calm him down. Karasuno didn’t seem phased just yet, but then again, they didn’t know what was about to happen.
“Bring it to me!” You winced as Bokuto called out for another toss. Sending it to his was risky, in case he missed again, but not sending it to him was also risky, in case he threw a tantrum, so it was impossible to know the right decision. Poor Akaashi.
Said setter sent the ball over to him anyway, but he couldn’t manage to get past the three blockers in his way. Their libero managed to retrieve the ball and keep it in play, but Bokuto was already calling for another toss. You could see the hesitation in Akaashi’s face. Missing three strikes in a row was definitely sure to destroy him.
The blockers jumped to stop him, and the ball fell to the floor on Fukurodani’s side of the court.
Only, the blockers weren’t what stopped it.
It had hit the top of the net.
“Oh no,” The coach followed you line of sight over to see the ace stood in the middle of the court, his team surrounding him as he hung his head low.
“Akaashi…” Was it time already?
“Don’t toss to me anymore for today!” There it was; Bokuto’s emo mode.
“Okay. Then while I’m not tossing to you, please calm yourself down.” You really admired how easily the setter could deal with his friend. Your boys seemed extremely confused at the outburst, but you could see the realisation in a few of their faces as they connected it to what you had said to them just a few moments ago.
Despite the disruption, Fukurodani was able to easily keep up in points, not letting Karasuno get more than one point ahead at any given time.
“It doesn’t seem like Fukurodani is fazed at all.” You grinned at the two adults stood next to you as they looked over for some sort of explanation.
“Bokuto may be the captain and act like the strongest member of the team, but really he’s just a big baby. Once he starts to lose his temper he’s more or less an active bomb waiting to explode. They’re all used to it by now.” Ukai hummed in thought.
“So that’s what you meant by them not relying on just one player. All of them are pretty well rounded.” Nodding, you looked back just as Akaashi tipped the ball into your side of the court instead of setting it.
It was always nice to see Akaashi use a setter dump, because nobody ever expected it, being too busy watching their ace.
“Ah, this is so sad.” Bokuto was wandering around the court like a lost puppy, his teammates handling everything for him.
They managed to reach match point very quickly, even without their star player, and it began to become clear that Karasuno wasn’t going to be able to win this, not today at least.
Tsukishima managed to completely shut out one of their spikes and you smiled. He was finally working as part of the team.
Asahi’s next serve was well received by their libero, meaning that Fukurodani would have a good shot at a point. You could see Bokuto fidgeting relentlessly, desperate for a spike. He was glancing over at Akaashi every few seconds, keeping an eye on who the spike was about to be sent to.
Akaashi set the ball and it arched well over the other spikers, towards the very left of the court. Tobio and Tsukishima had finally realised what was about to happen, having taken their attention away from the ace since he hadn’t been spiking any balls.
The boys couldn’t reach him in time to block the ball, not even getting a hand on it. It flew straight between the two of them and hit the floor with an impressive amount of force, bringing a smirk to Akaashi’s lips.
The match was finally over, and yet Bokuto still seemed to be in a bad mood, which is where Akaashi looked over to you for help. He smiled at you guiltily, silently pleading with you for help, and you couldn’t resist.
Sighing, you looked up at Ukai, who rolled his eyes but still nodded at you to go ahead.
You placed your notebook under your arm to hold it and cupped your hands around your mouth to amplify your voice.
“Tarō-senpai! That was awesome! Only the best from the ace!” He began to laugh manically, and you immediately knew it had worked. It really didn’t take much to pull him out of a mood like this, especially when his main motivator was his own ego.
“In the end, I am the strongest! Hey, hey, hey!” You smiled fondly at your friend, before turning your attention back to your own team, only to find them all glaring you down.
“Why would you do that?”
“Traitor.” Giggling, you began to hand out their water bottles, congratulating them on how well they all did.
They had managed to hold up their own pretty well against some of the best teams in the country that week.
You couldn’t be prouder of them.
~~~
The barbecue rolled around in the late afternoon and the smell of cooked meat in the warm summer air was heavenly. You couldn’t think of a better way to end the week for both you and the boys other than this. The relaxing atmosphere was definitely a welcome change from the chaos that the matches had been.
You managed to pick out the tall blond that you had been looking for surprisingly easily amidst the crowd of players and you made your way over to him gradually, greeting most of the other players and managers you crossed paths with on the way.
“Did you have fun?” He jumped as you appeared behind him suddenly, having not noticed you approaching. You smiled widely up at him as you waited for him to answer you, and he couldn’t help but notice how tired you were.
Even if you hadn’t been playing yourself, you had been working hard to keep all of the boys, and especially himself, in check over the entire camp. It must have been exhausting for you to deal with an entire team of unruly boys every day. He was slightly guilty that he had been the majority of the trouble you had dealt with, meaning he was a big part of the reason you looked so worn out.
“Y-yeah. I think I did.” A nice silence settled in between the two of you, and Tsukishima forced himself to move his gaze away from you, afraid of what he would do if he continued to stare into your eyes like he had been.
“It’s nice to see you finally enjoying yourself a bit. Keep it up, beanpole.” Hit you. He would hit you if he carried on looking at you.
Even so, he chuckled at the nickname, slowly growing to somewhat like it, all because you were the one that called him that.
“Enjoy the feast, Tsukki.” You placed a hand gently on his upper arm as you passed him, going back over to mingle with the other players. He kept his focus on you as you moved across the yard to go and speak with Bokuto, Akaashi, and Kuroo. He barely noticed as his mood began to darken, a scowl rising on his face and his fists clenching at his sides as he watched you laugh at one of their stupid jokes.
“So, you do like her then?”
“Yeah- what?” He whipped his head to the side in panic to see Yamaguchi stood there with his arms crossed and a smug look on his face. Tsukishima was frozen in place, at a complete loss of what to say.
Fuck.
“I knew it.” The blond sighed. There was no use in denying it now.
He was in big trouble.
Karasuno Secret Santa 4
Part 1 Part 2 Part 3
Kageyama slurped on the milk carton straw. Last week’s game against Nekoma went relatively well, even without their ace or libero for a good part of it. It was great practice for him and Hinata though. Even when Nekoma thought that they had gained the upper hand, Hinata was always just a few steps ahead of them. It did put a smile on his face to remember how competitive both teams became when it came to the torment of Hinata. Some players from both teams wanted to take Hinata down a couple of pegs, while others were attempting to carry him away to safety. It was unfortunate, but it seemed like so many players on both teams got a chance to give Hinata small little tickles as he was passed around. Well, everyone got a chance except for Kageyama. It would definitely be his time today, after the practice game he would jump on that little half pint.
The practice game…
Kageyama took one last sip of his milk before squishing the carton with one hand. The possibility of having to play against Aoba Johsai made Kageyama’s stomach turn uncomfortably. He took a deep breath before tossing the empty carton away in the nearby trash bin. He had been extremely nervous last week too, just before learning about their surprise opponent. It felt like a breath of fresh air to see those dark uniforms.
“Kageyamaaaaaaa!” Hinata yelled as he raced across the school grounds and over to where Kageyama was standing. The Karasuno school setter smirked, wiggling his fingers at his sides in preparation. Maybe he wouldn’t have to wait for the end of this dumb practice game. It would definitely help with his nerves.
A firm hand settled on his shoulder and Kageyama looked up to see his captain staring down at him. While Daichi was smiling, there was something else behind his eyes that made Kageyama freeze.
“Don’t you dare tire him out before the game,” Daichi said, looking pointedly at Kageyama’s hands. With a small pout, Kageyama crossed his arms over his chest.
“You guys are no fair. He got one on me,” Kageyama said right before Hinata tackled him to the ground in a huge bear hug.
“What’d you get on the test, Kageyama?!” Hinata asked, perched on top of him like an excited dog.
“The…test?” He asked, rubbing the back of his head. He wasn’t hurt from the fall, but it definitely wasn’t comfortable.
“Yeah, dummy.” Hinata laughed.
“Don’t call me dummy….dummy.” Kageyama retorted before shoving Hinata off of him with a grunt. Hinata just laughed. He took out a piece of paper and shoved it in his face. That bastard had gotten a 41 on their last test. Hardly anything to brag about, really, but Kageyama felt a pang of jealousy. He had only gotten a 40.
“Great job, first year.” Daichi said, ruffling the red head’s hair fondly. Hinata began performing a victory dance, waving his test paper around as if it were the winning lottery ticket. Kageyama had to force himself not to smile at him, especially not in front of Daichi.
“Who are we playing today, captain?” Kageyama asked as the captain helped pull him to his feet. Daichi just shrugged.
“Dunno, but–” He began before Hinata jumped in between them and held onto Kageyama’s shoulders.
“But it doesn’t matter, because we are going to win!” He said with a smile so bright and brilliant, that even the stubborn Kageyama had to smile back. The little bastard’s enthusiasm was contagious to put it lightly.
“Alright then, let’s go warm up,” Daichi said with a soft chuckle.
“Last one in the gym is a rotten egg!” Hinata yelled and began sprinting over to the gym. Kageyama was quick to follow.
When Daichi arrived at the gym, Hinata and Kageyama were stuck in the doorframe, each too stubborn to let the other one get ahead. Both insisting that they had won. Daichi put a hand on both of their backs and shoved them both into the gym. It didn’t matter which one of them hit the ground first, they were both losers. The pair landed in a heap on the floor.
“Looks like the other team hasn’t shown up yet,” Sugawara said, popping in the door just a moment after Daichi had.
“Maybe they just got scared and ran away!” Tanaka yelled, leaping over the two first years on the floor and tearing off his own shirt.
“Please put your shirt back on, Tanaka,” Daichi said, his eyebrow twitching.
“Oh my god, who killed the first years?!” came Noya now, kneeling next to Hinata and Kageyama. “Why do the good have to die young?!”
“We could always tickle them and see if they’re still alive,” Sugawara said mischievously, reaching down with wiggling fingers. Both Hinata and Kageyama jumped to their feet, bumping into each other as they did so.
“You’re alive!” Noya announced, pulling the two of them in a group hug.
“Noya, would you leave those two lovebirds alone for two seconds? I need to practice my serves.” Asahi sighed, waving for Nishinoya to follow him to the court.
“The other team is here,” Tsukishima announced as he walked in with their remaining team members and managers. Captain Ukai wasn’t too far behind as well.
“Who are they?” Kageyama asked and though he tried to keep his nerves under control, he felt the anxiety bubble in his stomach again. Hinata looked at him up and down for a moment before resting a reassuring hand on Kageyama’s shoulder.
“Aoba Johsai,” Tsukishima replied, his eyes narrowing at Kageyama. He was trying to read the setter’s reaction.
It wasn’t good. Most of the color drained from Kageyama’s face and he felt a chill run up and down his body. He could still remember that day that he was almost struck by Oikawa. A player that he had looked up to (and maybe…maybe something more) had raised a hand to strike him. The pure hatred in Oikawa’s eyes haunted him to this day. Who knows what would have happened had Iwaizumi not been there to stop it?
“Hey,” Hinata’s voice said, piercing through Kageyama’s spiralling thoughts. Kageyama looked at him. “This isn’t going to be like when they were on your team. I’ll always be here to hit your tosses, no matter where you set it to.”
Of course that’s what Hinata thought it was, which was certainly a part of it even if not the main concern. Kageyama couldn’t help but smile slightly, trying to put their prized decoy at ease. It was a kind gesture on his part to try and make him feel better, even if he could only guess at what the cause was.
It was true, two of Aoba Johsai’s volleyball players used to play with Kageyama, further adding to his nerves. They had dubbed him the “King of the Court”– a nickname that Kageyama was proud of… until he learned the true meaning of it. It meant that no one trusted him, no one even wanted to play with someone with such tyrannical sets.
The combination of Oikawa’s strike against him and his former team leaving him…it had left Tobio Kageyama feeling as if he could never trust anyone again. Though, truthfully, he felt as if he had gotten better with the help of the other Karasuno players–especially Hinata.
“Well, if it isn’t the high and mighty King of the Court.” Came that sickly sweet voice as the Aoba Johsai setter strutted into the crow’s gym. Kageyama immediately tensed up, his hands clenching and unclenching at his sides.
“Kage–” Hinata began.
“Let’s go, guys. We’re winning tonight,” Kageyama said, pulling away from Hinata’s grasp and walking over to the bench.
“That is some mighty big talk, your majesty. Are you going to be bossing everyone around to get your way again?” Oikawa continued, smiling over at him. Kageyama averted his eyes and picked up a stray volleyball from the court floor. He wanted to scream, to yell, to tell Oikawa to just fuck off already. His focus was solely on Oikawa today, the rest of his world seeming to just warp around him.
The warm up drills, the coach’s talk, all of it seemed like it was happening from far away. Kageyama was just scowling, either at the floor or over at his rival, Toru Oikawa. Honestly, he felt sick just being in the same gym as him. Just knowing that he was there.
Then, before he could even properly register anything, the game was beginning. The net was up, Tekada stood as the ref, and Kiyoko and Yachi stood by the point board. It was Asuhi first up to serve with Daichi and Noya also in the back row with him. Kageyama was up front with Tsukishima and Hinata, ready to block or send over spikes whenever they were able.
“How are you feeling, your majesty? You look a little pale.” Oikawa said from the other side of the net. Kageyama tried to distract himself, watching the ball instead of Oikawa. Suddenly, a hand was flying towards him.
Kageyama flinched.
Hinata stared at him, his hand still up in the air for a pre-game high five. They looked at each other for a moment longer until Kageyama weakly smacked Hinata’s hand in return. Then, Asahi sent over a serve. The rally went on for a while, the ball bouncing from one side of the court to the other. Hinata kept throwing concerned glances over at the setter. That sort of reaction was…concerning to say the least.
Kageyama sent over a set to Hinata, the ball flying higher than usual, but Hinata adjusted and slammed the ball down on the other side of the court. To anyone else, it looked just like their regular quick attack play.
Oikawa frowned, looking through the net to glare daggers at his former apprentice.
“Hey, Kageyama, is everything–?” Hinata tried again, but Kageyama just waved him off. It was Asahi’s turn to serve again since they had won the point.
“Don’t get too comfortable in your throne, King of the Court.” Oikawa said, crouching down in a defensive position again as the ball flew up in the air.
The rally went on for longer this time, Noya saving them more than a few times as Oikawa set up multiple balls for his spikers. Kageyama felt as if he were moving through honey, the world around him going too fast for him to keep up with. Tsukishima tugged him close to block a ball, purposefully grazing his side. Kageyama didn’t even blink. When they jumped, he was face to face with Turo Oikawa. Oikawa smiled as he hit the ball, and Kageyama flinched again. When he touched the ground again, it seemed as if his legs just gave out from under him. He fell on all fours, his palms stinging as they struck the hard gym floor.
“Tobio-chan, you don’t have to bow down to me just yet, I still have a whole set to beat you.” Oikawa laughed, crouching down so as to be on Kageyama’s level.
To beat you.
“You alright?” Daichi asked, kneeling in between Kageyama and Oikawa, blocking their view of the other.  Kageyama looked up, feeling dizzy.
I have to win.
“I’m fine. Just landed wrong,” He explained, getting back up to his feet. Daichi looked concerned and Kageyama could tell that if he messed up again, Daichi would insist that Sugawara replace him on the court.
No, I have to prove myself to him.
“Let me know if you need to rest,” Daichi said, patting Kageyama on the head before heading back to his position.
Everyone is staring at me.
One of Aoba Johsai’s players set up for a serve. Oikawa inched closer to the net, close to where Kageyama was.
“Hey, hey, King Tobio.” Oikawa whispered.
Stop it. Stop talking.
“Still want me to teach you how to serve?” Oikawa continued. Kageyama gasped, looking up at Oikawa with wide eyes. All the upperclassman did was smile. An evil smile.
“Kageyama! Net ball!” Noya yelled.
Kageyama looked up to see the ball slowly falling right at the net. Kageyama jumped, reaching to push the ball over the net and gain the crows another point. He glanced over and saw
Oikawa’s hand going straight for him again.
This time, it’s going to land! There is no one here to save you! Duck!
Kageyama brought his arms up to his face to shield himself from the incoming slap. Nothing. Oikawa lightly tapped the ball over and it bounced harmlessly on the floor.
But Kageyama didn’t notice. He was on the floor yet again, but this time, it felt as if he would never move again. He was shaking hard, his breath quickening in his chest.
I can’t breathe. I’m not safe. I can’t breathe. I’m not safe.
Kageyama squeezed his eyes closed as tears began to fall. He couldn’t seem to breathe properly. He could barely hear as Oikawa laughed, taunting him and saying that he had never grown out of his crown. Calling him a sore loser over just one point. Daichi was with him again, kneeling next to him and rubbing a comforting hand on his back. Hinata was yelling at Oikawa, but Kageyama couldn’t make out what. Coach Ukai was yelling now, pointing and waving his arms around. Oikawa was whining about something, arguing back.
Everything is so loud.
Daichi scooped up the crying first year, carrying him over to the nearest safe place that he could–the utility closet.
“Tobio. I need you to breathe, okay?” Daichi said, sitting with his back against the wall and Kageyama cradled in his arms. Honestly, he had no idea what he was doing. All he knew was that Kageyama felt as if he were in danger and that loud environment was not the right place for him. Asahi stepped into the closet and walked right to where Kageyama was. He took Kageyama’s hands and looked at him straight in the eyes.
“Hey, man, I don’t know what Oikawa did to you, but he’s gone now. You’re safe. He’s not gonna hurt ya, okay?” Asahi said calmly. With how often Noya had panic attacks and nightmares, Asahi had plenty of practice calming people down. Even if he didn’t know what exactly the trigger was, he knew that he needed to make the panicking person feel safe.
“He’s gone. You’re okay. We’re here. Kageyama, breathe.” Asahi said, taking deep breaths himself. Without really realizing it, Kageyama began mirroring the breathing. Sugawara was the next one in the closet, with a towel in one hand and a bottle of water in the other. He set them both down before stepping out. Daichi saw a glimpse of Hinata, Tanaka, and Noya trying to see what was going on.
“Focus on me, not them,” Asahi said, trying to grab Kageyama’s attention. Apparently he had noticed the three loudmouths of the team trying to get inside. Kageyama used his shirt collar to wipe at his tears hurriedly.
This was a little embarrassing. Not only did his entire team see him break down, but Oikawa had as well.
“You’re okay, man. Really.” Asahi said with a smile. He pat Kageyama on the head lightly and Daichi awkwardly pat his back. Kageyama took a deep breath and took a sip from the nearby water that Suga had dropped off.
“Sorry for tanking the game,” Kageyama grumbled, pulling himself up and off of Diachi. Daichi got up as well and cuffed the back of the setter’s head.
“You know none of us care about that, right?” Daichi said, raising an eyebrow.
“But you all want to stay on the court for as long as possible. And I ruined that after two points.” Kageyama grumbled.
“Kags, are you serious?” Daichi asked, shaking his head. “It was a practice game. We care more about your injury than we do about the game.”
“My…injury?” Kageyama asked. Daichi poked him in the head.
“I think that the captain is trying to say,” Asahi chuckled. “Is that your mental health is just as important as your physical health and you gotta take care of yourself.”
“But…I’m not injured. I’m fine.” Kageyama insisted. The two third years stared at him and Kageyama huffed. “Okay, I get it.”
“Good. Now, I’m gonna tell Kiyoko to get the projector and Yachi needs to spray this closet. It smells so gross.” Daichi said, giving Kageyama’s shoulder one last squeeze before heading out of the closet.
As soon as the door opened, Hinata burst through and lept onto Kageyama. Thankfully, Kageyama was standing right in front of Asahi and the Ace’s strong body stopped him from falling over. Hinata clung to Kageyama like a koala to a tree, arms wrapped around his neck and legs latched around his waist.
“I’m so sorry that I didn’t know! Kageyama! You gotta tell me next time! We were right in front of  him too! You’re so brave!” Hinata wailed, being over dramatic as usual. Sugawara grabbed Daichi and whispered something in his ear.
“Oikawa tried to do WHAT?” Daichi yelled “Is that punk blue bastard still here?”
Kageyama watched as the captain of Karasuno stormed out of the gym, yelling about how they would never have Aoba Johsai back in the gym again.
“Uh, what happened?” Kageyama asked, shifting his weight so that he could hold Hinata better.
Wait, why am I holding him again?
Kageyama dropped Hinata and the orange-haired spiker dropped to the ground before immediately springing back up on his feet. It was like he was a ball or something. Always bouncing back.
“Well, after you fell, Oikawa was saying stupid stuff and then a bunch of us started yelling. Oikawa was being a huge dick, and I thought that maybe he was just trying to be competitive and mean, but he was just being mean. And then Coach Ukai came in and he was all like BAM and then Oikawa went ZOOM–” Hinata rambled, waving his arms around for emphasis. Kageyama chuckled, watching the little guy try and retell something fairly simple.
“In proper terms,” Tsukishima said, pushing his glasses up his nose “Oikawa kept calling you names while you were in your panic attack. Hinata, Noya, and Tenaka had to be held back. Iwaizumi told us the…incident that happened in your middle school. Then, Coach Ukai chased Aoba Johsai out.”
“My version was better,” Hinata grumbled.
“Your version didn’t make any sense,” Tsukishima retorted. “Next time, try and use some proper words and maybe breathe in between your sentences.”
“So, what are we doing for practice time?” Kageyama asked, seeing Tanaka along with the other second years putting away the net and the stray volleyballs.
“Kiyoko and Yachi are getting the projector and some blankets so we can have a movie night!” Hinata said excitedly, throwing his arms up in the air. Kageyama looked at how everyone was working together in the gym.
Even after an incident like that…even though everyone here loved the game, loved volleyball…they were all willing to drop everything to make sure that he was feeling better. It really made him think that this team was really something else. It was more than just a volleyball team.
It felt like a family.
Sweet Like Pudding Ch. 16
Italics - thoughts
Every single one of the players were in high spirits despite the exhaustion, for this last set will decide the outcome of the game.
Currently the tallies for the previous games are as follows:
Game 1: 2 : 1 In favor of Kanna's team.
Game 2: 1 : 2 In favor of the opposing team.
Game 3: 1 : 1
No matter what the outcome of the game may be, the coaches were incredibly satisfied with today's practice matches with Kanna. For once they did not regret indulging the player's requests. They've already decided on what reward they will give out on the last day for all their hard work. But before that, it's time to find out who the victor of the last game will be.
"LEFT!"
"HERE!"
"BOKUTO-SAN!"
Kuroo and Asahi reacted and moved to block. Koutarou slammed a cross passed the block, determined in securing the point. Only for the ball to be picked up by Sawamura. Which in turn caused both Koutarou and Kageyama to click their tongues in annoyance.
The last set had barely even started, and already it was torturous. Every point earned, was earned painstakingly slow from a long rally. To top it all off, it was such a close game that nobody could get even a single point lead. Now they were entering the endless deuce territory.
A time-out was called and the teams gathered to discuss.
"This is too much." said Asahi clearly exhausted.
"We have to do something to end this." Sawamura stated as he wiped his face off of sweat.
"We're going to end it." Kenma declared.
"Oh?" Kuroo and the rest of the group's curiosities were peaked.
"What are you planning Kenma?" asked Komi intrigued, as he capped his water bottle to listen attentively to what the setter has to say.
"The rest of you just have to make sure to keep the ball in play and to keep attacking. The moment we gain a point." Kenma stopped and turned to look directly at Kanna and said.
"I'll leave the last toss to you." The others just nodded their heads in agreement, even though they didn't clearly understand. Knowing it's those two, they could pull anything off. Meanwhile, Kanna was freaking out.
"You—Why are you assigning such an important task to me?! What if I don't make it?!" She exclaimed.
"You're going to make it." Kenma immediately responded.
"But—"
"You will." Kenma interrupted with finality in his tone, which caused Kanna to pout at him.
"How is it possible to be so cute even in distress?" He thought, whilst struggling to keep his face neutral and preventing a blush from blooming on his face.
Kenma sighed and grabbed Kanna's arm, then proceeded to drag the both of them a little away from the rest of the team.
"Look you can do this. I know you can." He encouraged.
"But what if I get blocked?" She asked with downcast eyes and slumping shoulders.
"Every block has a weakness. You have good eyes. Even if you haven't played as a wing spiker that much, I know you'll be able to see it." Kenma said, with determination burning in his eyes.
Before Kanna could respond to Kenma, the whistle blew signaling the end of the time-out. Kenma lightly squeezed Kanna's arm in reassurance, and then made his way to take his position on the court. Kanna just sighed and followed after him to do the same.
After a few long rallies and multiple tries later. The opportunity arose in the name of everyone's favorite glass-hearted ace Azumane Asahi, along with the ever dependable pain-in-the-ass Kuroo Tetsurou. A glorious attack and block combination that gained them a one-touch from Kuroo.
Kenma signaled Kanna in his peripheral vision, and she proceeded to make her run up for the spike. The opposing team reacted and moved to block.
"Three Blockers!" warned Sawamura
Kanna took a deep breath before putting all her weight in the balls of her feet and jumped with all her might. To her, everything that happened afterwards was like watching it all play out in slow motion. As she was suspended in mid-air, even with the block in front of her, she could see clearly.
Maybe she really did have it all in her this whole time. But she never would've ever known if it wasn't for the amount of belief Kenma so blatantly wanted to shove unto her face. She supposes she should thank him. It is a great honor after all to have someone like him expect her to succeed, even if she herself doesn't.
"Please accept this as an answer to the confidence you have in me, Kenma."
Kanna thought as the ball hovered over her. She raised her hand and spiked the ball into Koutaro's fingertips with all her might. Yaku had moved to try and save the ball, but the trajectory of the ball made it impossible for him to reach.
Kanna stared at the ball in bewilderment as it smacked loudly on the gym floor. She then slowly turned her head to look in Kenma's direction and let out a gasp.
"KENMA! KENMA! KENMA! HAHAHAHAHA!" Kanna exclaimed as she ran and jumped to envelop Kenma in a hug, squeezing with all her might.
"I DID IT! I DID IT! HIHIHIHIHI!" She beamed as she continued to jump in delight in Kenma's arms.
"Yes, yes. You did." Kenma responded to the enthusiastic girl.
The others stared at the two. They didn't know how to react and what even to react to. First of all, that was an insane move they managed to pull off. And secondly, Kenma was returning Kanna's hug with a small smile on his face.
"WHAT?!" They yelled, but the two seemed to be too lost in their own world to care about the others. As Kanna continued to excitedly yell while Kenma nodded and responded quietly.
"THAT WAS SO COOL! KANNA-SENPAI! YOU'RE SO COOL!" Hinata's booming voice pulled everyone out of their trances and back into reality.
Kanna, ever to be swayed by the orange fluff-ball of sunshine, turned towards him and laughed along with a few others. She was in the middle of explaining what happened, when she began to sway, startling everybody. Kenma, Koutarou, Akaashi, and Kuroo the ones closest to her, reacted upon instinct to grab hold of her. Koutarou, being the fastest was the one who caught her. His anxious and worried expression was mirrored by every single person inside the gym.
"Kanna-chan?!" Koutarou exclaimed as he held her steady in his arms.
Kanna shook her head and pushed Koutaro with what little strength she could muster.
"I'm fine, just got to—" She tried to argue, but soon she was falling back into Koutarou's arms, unconscious.
The last thing she saw before everything went black, was Kenma's incredibly distraught face.
The others ran towards them, fussing over Koutarou holding the unconscious girl. The coaches tried to calm them down and instructed Koutarou to take his cousin to the sleeping quarters. Koutarou moved to properly carry Kanna and proceeded to follow after the managers.
Meanwhile at the gym, since the previous matches were rigorous enough, the coaches decided that the players were done for the day and instructed everyone to have ample rest before they had their individual practices. After giving out their warnings if they should catch any of them overworking themselves, the coaches left the gym to check up on Kanna.
After everyone did their cool down stretches, instead of moving around, they all gathered around in a large circle in the middle of the gym waiting for Bokuto or anyone of the managers or coaches to walk through the doors.
Each and every single one of them were beyond amazed at what just happened, but the concern for Kanna's well-being currently overpowered any other emotion.
"Hey guys."
They perked in attention at the sudden voice in the silence of the gym and turned to look in the direction it came from, only to see Shirofuku and Kiyoko standing by the doors.
"What did they say?" asked Sugawara breaking the silence.
"Overwork. She just needs to rest for a while so she's bedridden for the rest of the day. But she'll be fine." Kiyoko answered
At this, all the guys heaved a sigh of relief.
"Where's Bokuto-san?" Akaashi questioned
"Still there. He refuses to leave until she wakes up." answered Shirofuku pointing behind her.
"I'll go talk to him." replied Akaashi, as he left the gym to do just that.
The managers left after him while the others talked among themselves.
"Hopefully she'll be fine by tomorrow." Said Yaku, earning a nod from Sugawara as they continued to talk about how reckless some people could be.
Kuroo turned away from the conversation and noticed Kenma deep in thought.
"You good? Kenma?" he asked.
"Huh?" Kenma answered
Kuroo sighed. "They said she'll be fine. So you don't need to worry too much."
Kenma just deadpanned at him and said. "I wasn't." And then leaving to his own devices.
"This guys seriously." Kuroo just shook his head at his best friend's behavior.
WARNING: descriptions of vomit below!
read the warning!
read the warning!
okay, you’ve been warned!  please enjoy the fic!
“Hey, Suga?”
“Hm?”  Suga hummed a reply without looking up from the book he was reading.
“I’m, uh, gonna use the restroom,” Daichi mumbled.
Suga looked up.  Daichi’s voice sounded strained, and it was a strange thing for him to bother mentioning.  Sure enough, the team captain looked noticeably paler than normal, and was clearly shaky.  His shirt was clinging to his body with sweat.
“Sure, Dai,” Suga said gently.  “You okay?”
“Hm?  Yeah, I’m fine,” Daichi brushed off Suga’s concern and padded through the sand.  Suga felt his brow crease, and it was a struggle to ignore the urge to follow after his friend.  He was willing to bet that Daichi was fine.  Suga was a worrywart, after all, so he was probably just overthinking things.  He was pretty sure that Daichi would tell him if something was wrong, so he pushed his suspicions aside and tried his best to continue enjoying a relaxing afternoon on the beach.
This soon became impossible.
Daichi came back no less than ten minutes later looking exponentially worse than before.  The shaking had intensified, his skin was ashen, he had an unusually dazed expression on his face.  There was clearly something wrong.  Concern made Suga’s heart pound faster than normal, but Daichi just sat down under the umbrella again.
“Suga!  Daichi!”  Noya came running at them, and Suga stood up immediately hoping to save Daichi the trouble.  The second year panted, hands on his knees.
“We’re- we’re gonna play some beach ball,” Noya explained, pointing over his shoulder.  “Wanna- wanna join us?”
Looking past him, Suga saw Hinata, Kageyama, and Asahi surrounding the net.  Asahi waved uncertainly, while the other two were clearly arguing about something.  It certainly looked like fun, but Suga shook his head.
“Nah, I think we’re-“
“Sure,” Daichi said, standing and interrupting him.
“But-“
Daichi bumped his shoulder into Suga’s.  “What?  It sounds like fun, doesn’t it?”
Suga appraised Daichi again.  He looked marginally better, but still, Suga still doubted that this was a good idea.  He shook his head.  He didn’t know why Daichi was trying to hide the fact that something was so clearly wrong, but it seemed like the captain’s mind was made up.
“Alright,” Suga agreed begrudgingly.  At least by playing volleyball with him, Suga would be able to keep an eye on Daichi.
It was, of course, inevitable that Daichi and Suga got split up into different teams, since it would be unfair to put Hinata and Kageyama on different teams, and Noya refused to play without Asahi.  And, honestly, as much as they loved to make fun of him, neither Suga nor Daichi were heartless enough to do that to Asahi anyway.  So Daichi joined the first years, since Asahi and Noya needed a setter.
Considering each of their abilities, it should have been a good game.  The teams normally would have been well matched.  And yet, Suga’s team pulled ahead easily.  Far too easily.  By the time the score was 14-5, even Noya was shooting Daichi concerned looks, and nothing ever seemed to phase Noya.  Not to mention, Daichi hadn’t yelled at Hinata and Kageyama for arguing even once.  Suga tuned into some of their angry whispers when they all decided to take a five minute time out for water.
“…can’t do that, dumbass,” Hinata growled.
“Why not?”
“‘Cause he’s our captain!”
“Hah?  What does that matter?”  Kageyama said with a dark expression that Suga had learned meant he was confused, even though he looked angry.
“It’s disrespectful!”  Hinata crossed his arms obstinately.  Then an open and scared look crossed over his face and Hinata’s arms fell limp at his side.  He lowered his voice so that Suga could only barely make out what he was saying by half reading his lips.  “I am worried, though.  Kageyama, what should we do?”
“I don’t know, dumbass, that’s why I asked you if we should say something!”
The bickering continued, but Suga was distracted by Noya grabbing his hand and dragging him to the sidelines.  Noya gestured to the team’s ace.  Asahi was sitting on the ground with his head on his knees.  Suga blinked, surprised, and concerned that maybe something was wrong with Asahi, too, and Noya scowled.
“We’re quitting,” Noya said.
“Uh…”  That wasn’t what Suga had expected.  “What?”
“We’re done with this game.  Asahi doesn’t want to spike to the captain when he’s like this.”
Asahi looked up at Suga, wiping his eyes.  “I’m sorry, Suga, it just makes me feel really bad-“
Suga put a hand on Asahi’s shoulder to assure him that he wasn’t angry.  “That’s fine,” Suga said.  “I didn’t think he should play in the first place, but Daichi insisted.”
Noya nodded and ran over to tell the others.  Suga watched the relief visibly drain the tension from the first years’ shoulders.  More importantly, he watched Daichi nod, and then stumble a few feet away before sitting down heavily in the sand.
The rest of his teammates ran up to Suga at once.
“There’s something wrong with Daichi!”
“What’s wrong with the captain?”
“I think Daichi-san is really sick!”
“He looks really bad!”
For a moment, there was mass chaos.  Then Suga decided that enough was enough, and punched the one who was panicking the most (Asahi) lightly in the gut and told him to be quiet.  After that, there was silence, save a couple of whimpers from the ace.  Suga cleared his throat just to be sure that he had everyone’s attention.
“First of all, yes, of course I know there’s something going on with Daichi.  Having said that,” Suga mustered up all of the self-confidence that he didn’t have and tried to sound convinced as he continued speaking.  “I don’t think we need to get this worked up about it.  Daichi’s old enough and responsible enough to take care of himself, so have some faith and try not to get so frazzled, alright?”
Everyone nodded, and Suga could tell that, with the exception of Asahi, he’d managed to calm everyone down considerably, and having Noya around was a great way to distract the ace.  Sure enough, Noya dragged Asahi away before he could think about it too much.
Suga immediately went to Daichi, squatting down in the sand next to him and placing a gentle hand on his sweaty back.
“Dai,” he said, forcing his voice to remain calm.  “Maybe we should go inside, huh?”
Daichi put a shaking hand to his mouth, and Suga’s eyes widened.
“I’m gonna be - hurk!”  Daichi, who was in a crosslegged position, leaned over himself with a thankfully dry retch.  Suga was moving immediately, helping Daichi onto his knees so he wouldn’t get sick on himself.
“Ugh,” Daichi shuddered and let out a low whine.  Suga swallowed a lump in his throat.
“Don’t hold back, alright?”  Suga whispered.  It wasn’t like there was much of a choice, though.  The next moment Daichi’s stomach muscles clenched tight and a rush of partially digested food spilled out of his mouth and onto the hot sand.  He hung his head, limp for half a moment before the nausea turned his stomach again.  His head jerked up and putrid smelling vomit splashed onto the sand.
Suga muttered soft words of encouragement, but he doubted that it was much help when Daichi was assaulted by heave after heave, expelling so much puke that it was actually dripping towards the water, making horrific trails through the sand.  Finally Daichi got a second to breathe, and he swayed unsteadily back and forth over the mess.  Suga grabbed his shoulders as Daichi coughed and sputtered.
“Nice job, Daichi.  Do you want to go inside now?”
Daichi made a non-committal noise as he sat back on his heels.  Suga was just about ready to help his friend up when the sick boy made a gurgling sounds and threw up a mouthful of very liquified sick and stomach bile.  He was left shaking and panting, but didn’t seem to be feeling quite as queasy as he had been.  Suga took his chance, helped Daichi stand, and together they stumbled back to the lodge where they were staying.
“I’m fine, Suga,” Daichi mumbled as Suga fumbled with the key to their shared room.  “I don’t think I’ll - urp - get sick again, at least for a - hurk - while.”
Suga’s heart clenched.  It was sweet of Daichi to try and reassure him, but hardly effective when every couple of words was punctuated by a suppressed burp or heave.  For Daichi’s sake, he forced a smile.
“Right.  I’m not worried.  You’ll be alright, it’s just a little stomach bug.”
Still, it wasn’t long before Daichi abandoned watching TV in bed for clutching the toilet with all he had.  He retched harshly, three times, before he was able to bring up some stomach acid, and he looked close to passing out.
“Fuck, Dai, hang on, let me get you some water, you need to stay hydrated.”  As Suga fluttered around, Daichi, even through the overwhelming nausea, chuckled.  Suga worried he was really losing it.  “Uh, Dai, you okay?”
“Hm?  Oh yeah, I’m - hurk - 100% alright, Suga, and you’re - ulp - 100% not worried about me-” Daichi was forced to put his sarcasm on hold as another dry heave wracked his body.  Suga resisted the urge to yell at him to shut up and get better.
Instead, he asked, in a more strained voice than he’d intended, “What do you mean?  Why is this so funny?”
“Oh, it’s - urp - not, it’s just that you swore.  And I’m-“ Daichi coughed up a bit of stomach bile, then wiped his mouth.  “Don’t want you to worry about me, but - hurk - ‘m lucky to have you taking care of me.”
Suga’s eyes widened as he returned with water to find Daichi, slumped against the wall with sick as much on his clothes as in the toilet.  His cheeks were read and he looked faint.  Suga scowled.
“I swear to God, Daichi, if you pass out right now I will beat the shit out of you, regardless of all those nice things you just said,” Suga muttered, worry manifesting in anger.
Daichi just smiled.
Both of them could tell it was going to be a long night.
It’s Raining, It’s Pouring
My little present for @maystardust for the @hqrarepairexchange that I was a part of.
I chose to do Ushitsuki because there isn’t enough of them in the world. I know this is also posted on AO3 but thought I’d also post it here. So here you go, again.
ao3
Tsukishima doesn’t remember when their relationship developed into something out of a romance-comedy movie where 90% of the people who watch it cry really ugly, (since Yamaguchi was the one crying really ugly when he told him) but here he was now, looking at apartments with Ushijima and arguing whether they wanted a bigger living room or kitchen. If he thought back to maybe five or ten years ago he would have never seen himself here today. He can’t quite pinpoint the moment when he started feeling butterflies in his stomach and feeling his throat constrict every time he saw that familiar face, but maybe, just maybe it can all be narrowed down to that one day in the rain.
He was still just a first year in Karasuno. Still with a tall body that even he sometimes could not comprehend when his long limbs would do the opposite of what he wanted. He was still tuning out the world with his large earphones and blasting whatever punk rock band he came upon the night previous. The team was still practicing for Nationals, and the idiot duo were squabbling back and forth like always.
It was still a typical period for Tsukishima and the only thing that ever seemed out of place was when his big brother would start barging into his room instead of knocking like he used to. Of course he had nothing to hide, but it was never fun when he barged in while Tsukishima was working on his “toys” as his brother called them (they were actually high-rated godzilla figures mind him).
But nothing out of the ordinary. That is, until he was sent out on a rainy Sunday to pick up some supplies for his mom. The store was actually in the next town over because only there could his mom acquire the best supplies. It was just any random sewing supply shop but even his mom was picky about what she needed.
He had to take the loud and noisy train, only having on some shorts and throwing on his Karasuno jacket as he ran out the door to avoid his brother asking if he could come along. By then the sky had begun to darken, but Tsukishima assumed that he’d had enough time to at least make it back to their town before the downpour began.
Oh how wrong he was.
Once he paid for his mom’s items and stepped out of the store the rain cascaded over the whole city like a waterfall. He couldn’t even put his shoe out into the open sky without having them wet to the brim. Great. Looked like he’ll have to wait the rain out for god knows how long. He could just buy an umbrella from a shop but having never been in this town he didn’t even know what was left and right.
He scowled and looked ready to kill someone by now. Maybe some sort of angel would swoop in and save him.
“Tsukishima Kei.”
While trying to look for the nearest station or restaurant near him, Tsukishima didn’t notice the figure that appeared before him. Whipping his head up his eyes came in contact with the very Ushijima Wakatoshi from Shiratorizawa. He stands in front of him, out in the pouring rain with a black umbrella in his hand. They simply stare at each other for seconds until Tsukishima makes an annoyed face and Ushijima speaks up.
“What are you doing here?”
“What?” Now that he thought about it, he did see a sign pointing towards some high school when he exited the station. It seems like he somehow ended up around Shiratorizawa’s area, and somehow had the honor of meeting the very ace of Shiratorizawa himself.
Great.
Scoffing, Tsukishima aims his eyes somewhere else and tries to make the most displeased look over. “Nothing that you should know.”
Ushijima hums and continue to stare at him. With each second that passed Tsukishima’s scowl only got worse, and he was so close to bursting and asking Ushijima what the hell he wanted.
“What the-”
“Do you not have an umbrella?”
“Huh?”
Looking at Ushijima in disbelief, Shiratorizawa’s ace simply moved closer to Tsukishima and moved the umbrella over so that he wasn’t standing right in the middle of it. “I can take you to wherever you need to go.”
Tsukishima swore his heart didn’t skip a beat. “And why would you help me? Thinking you can ruin Karasuno’s chances at Nationals if you kidnap one of their blockers?” he spoke with a condescending tone. Yamaguchi used to say that he would always revert to his sadistic self when he wanted to hide his emotions, but just thinking about that now only pissed him off even more.
Ushijima simply frowns. “No, what reason would I have to do that? Your team has defeated me. I have no reason to exact revenge in any way.”
The rain pours down over them, louder and heavier. Even though all noises seemed drowned out around him, Tsukishima swears he can hear both his and Ushijima’s breathing.
It’s nerving.
“Fine.” Holding the plastic bag close to his body, Tsukishima steps forward and gets under the umbrella. As big as it looked, both of them were tall and large high school volleyball players so it barely did anything but push them further in to avoid the rain.
Tsukishima could feel the heat radiating off of Ushijima. He could hear his breath and every movement he made when turning from one corner to the next. Tsukishima opted to just stare at his shoes and think about stuff he hated so that his thoughts wouldn’t weave their way into something he would regret.
Hinata and Kageyama being idiots. Yamaguchi saying his stupid nickname. His brother barging into his room and making himself comfortable on his bed. The game against Shiratorizawa. The ace of Shiratorizawa. Ushijima Wakatoshi. His incredible strength and power. The way he just slams the ball down in front of them with the eyes of a beast.
Shit. This is not where his thoughts were supposed to go.
The game against Shiratorizawa was a long and grueling one. He hurt his fingers and had to handle one of the strongest spikes in the country. It was a hard battle but thankfully Karasuno came out victorious. That was the first time Tsukishima ever felt the adrenaline pumping through his veins. Dopamine filling his body with his mind only craving more and more. The satisfaction he felt when stopping a block and watching as the beast on the other side of the court get pumped up with each turn.
It was exhilarating, mystifying, and heart-pumping that left him craving for more. Craving for that beast on the other side of the net.
He groans. Freaking rampant thoughts. This is not what he wanted to be thinking about when sharing an umbrella with the very ace of Shiratorizawa who they defeated. Freaking embarrassing.
“Where do you need to go?”
“Huh?” He was too preoccupied with his thoughts that he didn’t notice that they stopped walking and stood near the edge of the road.
“Where is it that you need to go?” he asks again, head tilted to look him in the eyes.
“Just the station.”
“Okay.”
They walk again, Tsukishima keeping pace with Ushijima who leads them around the city.
As they walk and turn around a wide corner, Tsukishima suddenly sees his world turn sideways. He accidentally stepped into a pit hole and twisted his leg causing him to start falling. He closes his eyes and waits for the impact but after a few seconds of waiting he notices that he isn’t writhing in pain from smashing his head against the pavement. Opening his eyes he flinches when a raindrop falls over his face followed by several more. He adjust the level of his head and immediately comes face to face with Ushijima.
“Are you okay?” he asks, dace dangerously close to Tsukishima’s and umbrella thrown to the side.
Tsukishima can already hear Yamaguchi snickering from the other side of town. They were currently in what can only be described as the typical romance -comedy dip that always happens when the male and female lead start developing feelings for each other. Tsukishima had the bag of sewing supplies held closely to his chest with his body dipped backwards and Ushijima’s hands on his lower back and the other holding one of his forearms. He too was slightly leaning forward to have been able to reach Tsukishima in time.
He waits for an answer while Tsukishima ponders if he can just get sucked into a hole and sent to the center of the earth. He’s seen that conspiracy before about dinosaurs in the center of the earth, it doesn’t seem like a bad place to spend the rest of his life in.
Pushing back any weird thoughts, Tsukishima looks down at the abandoned umbrella next to them on the sidewalk and speaks. “You know we’re going to be drenched now because you let go of the umbrella.”
Ushijima nods but continues to stare at him.
“Hey, are you listening? Get the umbrella before we get even more we-”
“That game with Karasuno,” Ushijima starts. “Never in my life have I ever felt like I was going to lose. We were always at the top, so just knowing that a fallen team like Karasuno had defeated us sent chills down my spine.”
Tsukishima doesn’t know to respond. He can only stare into Ushijima’s eyes and stare into his dark olive eyes.
“It was exhilarating, mystifying, blood-pumping and full of adrenaline.”
“Oh.”
“Not just the game, but you as well.”
Tsukishima doesn’t answer but let’s things take their course for once. It seems too troublesome to try and think about things properly so he’ll deal with any consequences later.
After what seemed like a confession, they made their way towards the station and quickly dried themselves before Tsukishima had to leave for the next train back home. They departed with only a goodbye and prolonged staring until Tsukishima boarded the train and was on his way.
On his walk back home he couldn’t help but think about what Ushijima said about him. How he was exhilarating, mystifying, just blood-pumping. He shivers.
As soon as he gets home discards all of his clothes, ignores his brother like always and jumps into the bath. He sits there for what seems like forever and contemplates. Maybe he should have given him a kiss before leaving the station. That would have totally fit the role of romcom movie.
“Definitely next time, definitely.”
