Ronan loathes the word--fond. Fondness equates to weakness, to potential exploitation, to a singular person who exists only in the ghosts of his memories now--and yet, it would be a lie if he were to say that he was not fond, to some degree, of Matthias Warren. The man is the very exemplar of a loyal soldier, of a dog that is content to never struggle against its leash, the ideal pawn to push around the board until it serves its purpose, and Ronan will not hesitate to use him as such when it proves useful to him. However, there is something about the man that Ronan recognizes in himself--the instinct to never reveal how sharp his teeth are until its necessary, something inside of him that there will never be enough blood to truly satiate--something that Ronan begrudgingly must admit that he respects, even likes, as much as he is capable of truly liking anything.
Which is why he doesn’t hesitate to purchase two paper cups of coffee from the cart near the city council office, to tuck a brown bag full of pastries underneath his arm with the most recent newspaper on his way to Montague headquarters. He is unsurprised to find the man where he does--tucked in the back of the library in an impressive wingback chair, the weight of the task he has been assigned to do, the darkness of his work, clearly evident in the dark shadows swept underneath his eyes and in the slumped over positioning of his shoulders.
Ronan smiles warmly as he approaches, sets the coffee and food down on the small table in front of him. “You look like you could use this, amico.”

“The end of the melody is not its goal: but nonetheless, had the melody not reached its end, it would not have reached its goal either. A parable.” — Friedrich Nietzche
PART I.
Juliets were made for balconies, and February eighteenth found Juliana Capulet stood at the alabaster lip of her own, dark eyes unveiled to skirt over the sea of paramours walking the streets of fair Verona, and none of them her own. None who know her, and none to whom she could belong to. The Capulet heiress stood at the helm, like a captain of a ship, or only a tender girl plagued by loneliness – utterly, entirely alone. Her inhale was sharp—as it was, always. When she focused, she forgot to breathe, at least until her lungs burned in protest, in searing reminder. Her lashes lowered, her lids squeezed, tightly: it’s like slamming a window shut, end meeting pane scornfully. Yet it wasn’t scorn that coursed, potently, through Juliana’s bloodstream that day, that moment.
The perfume in the air was pungent, the floral decadence in ode to Saint Valentine, supposedly. An ode to Damiano Montague’s ego might be more accurate, but she digressed. Nevertheless, an inhale was all it took. Roses, the woman-girl knew. She knew without looking.
Quiet, calm—as if she is the bystander, not the host—Juliana diagnosed the heaviness of her lids, of her soul & her heart, as a melancholy teetering on nostalgia, engulfing her with a pressure that wasn’t quite crushing, wasn’t quite warm. Her fingers were curled around the railing, the wrought-iron blooms pressing indentations into fragile palms. She didn’t realise, not until her eyes were once more open, until her gaze dropped to blanched fists: she was shaking.
Roses, roses, roses; there were only ever so many at a wedding – or at a funeral.
Tumblr media
PART II.
Shell-casing & shrapnel rained. The same shaking hands throttled the weapon so desperately clutched between her fingers. A machine that propagates death held onto for dear life; there was a terrible irony here, was there not? There were two choices. There were only two choices. She could either shoot, or she could not. But that wasn’t true, either, was it? Didn’t she ask a third option of the towering blonde on the other side of the column? Shoot to disarm or distract, not wound, not fatally. Didn’t she ask it of Katarina Du Pont as Juliet, not Juliana? Had the plea not been as good as an order?
For a moment in time, Juliana could no longer hear the shots firing all around the room, bullets ricocheting, left, right, and centre. She couldn’t hear anything anymore, nothing besides the hard, deafening beat of her own heart, pounding in her ears, loud as a war song. It sounded like heavy footsteps, and then, just as quick, it sounded like a scream. It sounded like a scream, but it tasted like blood—and the blood was never hers. Shell-casing & shrapnel: she heard them, knew that on the other side of the column, there was blood.
She knew that the blood was always theirs, her Capulets. It was always them, spilling their blood and risking their lives, whilst she stood, always on the sidelines, useless.
“Defend them,” came a murmur. Or was it a prayer?
Juliet stepped out from behind the makeshift barricade. Hands still, finger trigger-ready. Her eyes as dark as a prophecy of the night’s impending unraveling. They caught on a flash of bolstering blonde in their periphery, and her gun joined the bloody orchestra, playing like the rest of them.
•••
—a scream. It was a sound that chilled her to the bone and would later haunt her, the scream of Juliana Capulet. Between both physical and verbal rows, it would seem a certain charge of hers had snuck past, and Katarina’s head turned sharply at the sound– past marble columns, past ballroom doors, to Juliana. Juliana. Whether it was desperation or anger, love or duty that fueled her next, a hard knee to her opponent’s gut had her moving faster than before, reclaiming her Beretta from the ground. “This isn’t over–”
She barreled her way towards the brunette she’d been ordered to keep safe, careened through the air as proiettile di Volumina – but, she was a weapon triggered too late, blindly following the sound that chilled her heart from the volatile inferno that accompanied a battle of fists. La principessa was within sight, not a dozen yards away and she’d seen it: that movement forward into the doorway of the ballroom, those few steps in the shocked atmosphere of battle to hear such a horrible heartbreaking wail escape from a woman’s mouth. Then: A shot loosed from a weapon that was not her own met her ears.
Too late, Katarina’s heartbeat roared in her ears. Too late, too late, too late-- Her heart declared each venomous cry in beat as she sprinted towards the younger woman fearing the worst. The way that Juliana’s body had violently jerked in response to the gunshot said everything the blonde had needed to know. Months ago, it had been Don Capulet. Now, his daughter-- their future-- Katherine’s charge, Katarina’s friend had a bullet torn into her body-- Too late, her mind howled. But, once the Capulet bullet had been loosed from its chamber, there was no stopping her; and, as the blonde came from the side of the entryway her arm was outstretched to wrap protectively around Juliana’s midsection to pull her away, to shield her, she finally spared a glance into the ballroom.
Rafaella–
Was not who she had been ordered to protect. The woman was their consigliera, and Matthias Warren would receive what was due to him. However, she had to get Juliana out of danger. Katherine needed to defend her life, had to do her duty. With her free hand, her gun came up to fire at the Montague who had shot at Juliana. Three shots, both shoulders and the hand that held the gun. There was no clean shot at Warren, not in the four heartbeats since she’d reached la principessa, not in the three and a half seconds she’d assessed the situation with the cutting authority of Carabinieri Lieutenant Du Pont and not Katarina. “We need to go–” A command, not a request tumbled from her lips, urgent as she attempted to pull her behind the entryway and out of another bullet’s line of sight, hand stained red from the blood that seeped from the younger woman’s wound.
“– Volumina, she’s been hit!” Help me save her, her words seemed to yowl. Their conversation days ago, just before she’d spent an afternoon with Juliana seemed to find its influence here now. Katarina Du Pont had lost Delphine Cloutier; but, Katherine would not lose Juliana Capulet. Not when they both wanted the same thing: a better Verona for the people they loved. She would not fail, and her yell called for the older woman to help her move the youngest of them to safety. “Her shoulder–” They needed to put pressure on it, get her to the hospital or she’d run the risk of bleeding out. “Juliana, please, we need to move--”
•••
Power was to be in the middle of a battlefield, defended by her allies, untouched by her adversaries.
Power was in extolling vengeance, in depriving Alexander Rallis of air in the same way he had done her, when a near-fatal wound had her choking on her own lifeblood backstage of the theatre in December.
Power was feeling each frantic beat of the Montague’s carotids, right beneath her fingers. And squeezing harder, and harder still...
Power was not losing one of their greatest chess pieces in the maelstrom.
Yet one minute Rafaella was there, fighting alongside herself and Lucrezia – the next, she was in Matthias’ grip, as surely as Alexander is within her own. Fear filled Vivianne’s eyes as she she stared at the glinting knife the Montague barred against the Capulet’s throat. Rafaella’s curls bounced back as she strained to avoid the serrated edge, and briefly, Vivianne recalled the press of those same tendrils against her cheek, when the young woman threw herself into her arms at the hospital, only two months prior. Not just a Capulet, not just their adviser, but her fiamma feroce. Her fierce flame. It was enough for love to briefly eclipse hatred, for Volumnia to reluctantly release her most reviled rival in order to reach for her gun, raising it quickly to target Matthias through its barrel. “Liberala.” Release her. She didn’t recognise the animal fury in her former friend’s eyes, didn’t know what vendetta he had against Rafaella that caused him to ignore even her own sovereign words.
“Malcolm –”
It was then she heard Juliana’s scream, her attention instantly diverted to the heiress who had come upon them, and fallen down the rabbit-hole to Hell. By the time she turned back to Matthias, he was already retreating with Rafaella in tow, putting Montague soldiers between them as her bullets rained down; catching, not on the Captain, but the collateral damage he’d tossed in her path instead. Her mind was as divided as her targets, keenly aware—with pulsing, nauseating whorl—of Juliana’s vulnerable presence only a few meagre feet away. She’d be damned before the girl was used against her once more, before another Montague was foolish enough to mistake la principessa for a mere bargaining chip, to be bled and discarded at will.
And then it happened.
She heard another cry erupt from the heiress, the multitones of surprise indicating that she’d been hurt. There were too many bodies between then; the Underboss couldn’t see her, but she spotted the Carabinieri bolting towards Juliana with single-minded purpose. And she was relieved for Katarina, relieved that she needn’t remind the bodyguard of her priorities. Instead, she continued fighting, until the path temporarily cleared, bloodthirsty resolve doubling with each body that hit the ground – until, finally, Vivianne reached them.
She knelt down to assess the extent of Juliana’s injury, but did not plead with the girl as the soldier did. Instead, her voice rang out a command, the doting concern with which she normally addressed the heiress with temporarily replaced with steel-spined authority. “Mantieni la pressione sulla tua ferita, Juliana.” Keep pressure on your wound, “non fermarti se non lo senti dalle mie labbra!” Don’t stop unless you hear it from my lips.
There was no time to argue, and no time to count their losses either. She hoisted Juliana up in her arms, as best as she could, taking care to avoid hurting her further.
“Andiamo, Katherine. Cover me,” she added to the lieutenant, rising to her feet. “Let’s get her out of here.”
Tumblr media
PART III.
She always expected a scream. After the gun went off like a judge’s gavel—BANG!—after the bullet pierced flesh... before the blood, before the end. In films, as the body hit the ground with a harsh breath, the quivering gasp, all they ever were was winded. She’d gone off on so many indignant rants, hadn’t she? About poor direction and lazy acting, about a lack of realism, and on and on? And in the life she’d inherited a mere three years ago... Juliana hadn’t paid it any mind, each time one of them had been wounded – hadn’t been able to. Perhaps she blocked it out? People did that with trauma, she knew, when it was too much and too hard, when it was unbearable. The theory had merit. Though, the nights lost to the sour wet of Vivianne’s blood on her hands, too much blood out where Rallis had wounded her negated it. Was the repression conditional on the basis of weaponry? Guns versus blades? Juliana supposed it didn’t matter anymore. No, it did not matter at all.
As it turned out, it wasn’t bad film-making. It wasn’t trauma overshadowing the event. She wanted to scream. She wanted to scream, she wanted to never stop screaming: Please, please, please, please, please –
But she couldn’t make a sound. She couldn’t breathe. She could feel the blood, warm and slick. She could feel strong arms around her, the racing pulse, the ragged breaths. The curtains came down on another blood-stained in Verona, with crimson velvet traded in for glistening, fluttering ribbons in black sweeping across Juliana Capulet’s vision. Her hands reached as her heart pled: RAFAELLA. WE CAN’T LEAVE HER. WE CAN’T LEAVE HER, I WON’T, I CAN’T – PLEASE! Please –
Her mind numbed, cooled. Her body could feel it; they moved farther away, they left her. They left her. Juliana left her.
Her lungs strained, oxygen sneaking into her system in whisper-thin tendrils, desperately, burning. The smell was unbearable: roses & blood.
Roses.
                                            – It would be a funeral, then.

2. Meaning of name "Liam" and "Emma"
Liam:
Liam's name is the name of a boy of Irish origin meaning "resolute protection".
Liam originated as the nickname of Uilliam, the Irish variant of William. William is an English name from German origin brought to Ireland when the British fled England after the conquest of Norman.
The Irish began to use English names, including William, which led to the development of Uilliam and its short form, Liam.
Liam is the top US boy's name for 2018, joining the elite group of names to top the list. Liam started out as a short form of William but has long stood on his own and for several years has become one of the most popular baby names for boys.
Now it is the fastest-growing Irish name in the United States, first entering the Top 10 in 2012 and before climbing to No. 1, holding No. 2 for four consecutive years.
Emma:
Initially, a short form of the German name beginning with the ermen element meaning "whole" or "universal". It was introduced to England by Emma of Normandy, who was the wife of King Ethelred II (and by him the mother of Edward the Confession) and later King Canute.
After the Norman conquest, this name became popular in England. It was revived in the 18th century, perhaps in part because of a poem by Henry Prior Henry and Emma (1709). In the United States, it ranked third in 1880 (after Mary and Anna were omnipresent).
It declined steadily over the next century, beginning another rise in the 1980s and eventually becoming the most popular name for girls in 2008.
At this time it also experienced similar levels of popularity elsewhere, including the United Kingdom (where it began rising a decade earlier), Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Scandinavia, and the Netherlands.

🎬Troilus & Malcolm, Scene I
Date: January 16th, 2019. Time: 4:45pm Place: University of Verona Availability: Closed to @matthiaswarren
The macabre events at Il Teatro Nuovo that had transpired a month ago were still weighing on most people’s minds, and Tomas was no exception. He hadn’t been in attendance that night, but Celeste was, and for all her efforts to protect Roman (always Roman), she’d gotten herself injured by some Capulet hell-hound named Regan. It was the second time in as many months that his wife had been hurt in the name of politics, and the normally quiescent man was livid. How could he possibly keep his family safe when her line of work mocked his attempts, time and time again? Please don’t say it, he’d told her, rubbing aloe vera gently over her bruises. It’s worth it, she’d replied, and that familiar ache bloomed in his heart again.
It was all he could think of, even now; jolted back into the present as students stood up all around him and Matthias Warren dismissed his class. His eyes settled on the professor as he began gathering his things, and a nagging question began forming in his mind as the auditorium emptied. He waited until the very last student had left before approaching the man at the front of the room. “Professor, do you have a minute? I’m having trouble wrapping my head around some of this stuff, and I’m thinking you’re the best person to talk to.”
Tumblr media
“Happy New Year by the way,” Tomas added customarily. “Hope you were given time-off to enjoy the break.” The events at Il Teatro had certainly put a damper on the holiday season. He wondered if Dr. Warren felt the same way... Or whether - like the war generals he covered in his military lectures - he thrived on the chaos just the same.

In fair Verona, our tale begins with HARRIET D’ANGELO, who is THIRTY-FIVE years old. She is often called HERMIONE and is NEUTRAL. She uses SHE/HER pronouns.
Tumblr media
TW: DEATH
When a PRINCESS is born, we all know how the story goes. She grows up in a castle that reaches up to the peaks of Heaven, with all that she desires at the tip of a bejeweled finger and the entirety of the world posed outside a gold-plated window; conquered and left for the taking. The princess embraces it all as she leads a happy, star-streaked childhood – but then she flourishes into cynical adulthood, and happiness becomes nothing more than a myth. Her castle in the skies turns into a prison buried within the depths of the earth, and the world outside her window becomes nothing more than an unattainable dream. And then the rest of her journey fades into a haze of rebellion and rage – because it can’t possibly end any other way, could it? Stories like these are abound in cities like Verona. You can almost see their scripts written over blood-soaked cobblestones and drawn across dusty, boarded up windows. And so, it’s only natural for one to FORESEE this story and claim to know how it unfolds without even sparing its text a glance. But there could be no greater mistake when it comes to the story of Harriet D’Angelo for it is not one that speaks of princesses and dragons and noble heroes. It simply speaks of a girl who loved and lost and LIVED to tell her own tale.
Harriet wasn’t born a princess, and she didn’t grow up in a castle – but she certainly came close. The D’Angelo family was not in the ruling class towards which the likes of the Du Ponts and the Vernons belonged, but it was esteemed in its own right. And so, Harriet received the BLISSFUL upbringing that could be expected for any child born onto the glamorous, gleaming pedestal of aristocracy. She received the greatest education, dressed in the finest silks, and hovered within the brightest social circles. However, while some would fill themselves up with such blessings until they reached the pinnacle of gluttony, Harriet merely took what was enough and looked no further. She possessed an uncanny sense of HUMILITY, despite being born to a mother who hungered for influence and a father who thrived on the opinions of others. Her eyes never sharpened with disdain as she looked up at her superiors, and her nose never wrinkled with disgust as she looked down at her lessers, either. Her sights were limited to what was before her; her heart tethered to the bright, sunlit slice of the world she found with her family – because for all their faults and flaws, they loved each other, and to Harriet, that was more than enough.
Even when that love was tested beyond its bearings, it was still ENOUGH for her, although it took her a tremendous amount of time and patience to reconcile with that belief. After all, no amount of faith could prepare anyone for the prospect of being shackled by the very people through which they sought freedom and safety – and that was exactly what happened on the dreary day when her parents made her an unprecedented, unwanted, offer of betrothal. It was from an established young man who, in her mother’s words, had hymns sung to his name around every corner of the city – but not even that description was quite as appalling as the story he spun. A chance encounter had apparently set him on Harriet’s unwitting path, and indeed, just like that, he wished for her be his. It was at that point that Harriet decidedly shut her ears to the rest of her mother’s honeyed words, eyes brimming with enraged tears and lips clamping shut against the protests that struggled to break free. But then her mother began to speak of how impactful such a marriage would be for their family name, holding Harriet’s hand in a feather-light grip as her lips curved with a smile that sparked stars into her eyes and dug the tenuous doubt into Harriet’s mind that perhaps this was indeed a venture worthy of her SACRIFICE. Her mother would have moved on to ensure her that she was under no obligation to do this – but before her tongue could even roll around the words, Harriet said yes. Even then, she would have still said yes. Even if asked to jump off a precipice and give her life away for her family’s sake, she would have still said yes. LOYALTY was as rigid and firm in her blood as a pillar of steel, and if anything stood true to Harriet, it was that.
Her marriage only lasted a handful of months, and when it finally sputtered away, it left behind a waning, war-torn GHOST of who Harriet had once been. The man she had gifted herself to turned out to be nothing more than a cruel, conniving monster who took away her life and then dared to take away the one thing that would have brought it back; feeding her lies of redemption and change upon the adoption of their child, only to walk away and leave her in the dust mere months later. Her son was the breath of life her heart had starved for, and it was in the wake of his blessed arrival into her life that Harriet found the will and the strength to gather her ashes and RISE from them. Years passed in blessed peace that she and her son joyously shared – right before it was ripped from them; right before he was ripped from her. The twist of fate couldn’t have been more random, or more cruel. Another vicious link had erupted in the chain of war harnessed by undeserving Capulet and Montague hands, and her son fell victim to it. A casualty was the exact wording in the tabloids, but there was no describing the loss or the AGONY that it brought forth. Once again, she crumbled; only this time, Harriet had to learn how to pick herself up. This time, she let herself soak up in the ashes in the hopes they would leave the scar on her heart even a little bit faded by the time she was back on her feet. This time, she taught herself how to stand alone, and how to seize that loneliness and turn it into strength. Now, she has risen, and rather than wait and pray, she has stolen a slice of peace and made it hers. And even with her heart torn in two, even with her happiness incomplete and unfulfilled, she was determined to protect what little of it she’s managed to earn. In Verona, the cost of PEACE is bloody and heavy, but make no mistake; she is willing to PAY it.
Tumblr media
ODIN BELLO & MATTHIAS WARREN: Demons. Othello and Malcolm. Two accursed names that have haunted and tormented her from the moment they poked out of the retelling of her son’s death like twin blades. Out of the drawling, monotone slew of the police officer’s words and straight into the core of her gnashing heart. Harriet doesn’t wish to find them, but she knows that her path will inevitably collide with theirs. After all, no two strings of fate ever went untangled when pulled by the hands of tragedy – especially in a city like Verona. But just as her story is not one that centers around a princess-turned-queen, it is not one that is driven by a force of vengeance, either. She doesn’t seek to harm them or punish them—but that doesn’t mean she isn’t seeking to condemn them with every untarnished inch of her heart.
DELILAH BELLO: Reflection. She’s heard the scathing whispers tacked onto Delilah Bello’s name, and the dreary tale that follows in its wake. It’s one that undeniably parallels her own, with the only difference being that Harriet was leashed by the chain of devotion while Delilah was caught in the snare of love. But in the end, is there truly that much of a difference between the two? Harriet isn’t too keen on figuring that out, but she is intrigued by Delilah’s story and the struggle she must find in her ceaseless attempts to regain control of its narrative. Perhaps it will help Harriet regain control of hers. Perhaps it will help her learn that such is a goal that she should have aspired for many years and losses ago.
SANTINO GALLO: Lost soul. The vision of the man struck her heart the moment she laid eyes on him, although at the beginning, it was merely due to the pitiful state in which she found him. Huddled up in a dark alleyway, one hand pressed against his stomach and the other gnarling against the grimy pavement as he retched. Her immediate impression was that he was a drunken fool who wasn’t worth the waste of her time, but despite the thought, something kept Harriet’s feet rooted to the ground. Perhaps it was mistaken judgement or perhaps it was something far more intrinsic than that, but she decided to help him. Took him home, laid him on his couch, brushed his sweat-slicked hair from his forehead with a gentle hand, then bid him farewell with a glass of water and one last wondering glance. Somehow, Santino was able to track her down later on and demanded that she let him repay her for what she did—and strangely enough, she let him. Something about Santino tinges her tongue with the bitter taste of loss; sears her mind with the weighted question of whether or not her son would have wound up on a similar path of condemnation had his life not been cruelly ripped away. She seeks only an answer from Santino, but she might be in for a lot more than she bargained for.
MONA CHEN: Kindred spirit. Mona Chen is the last person she would have expected to befriend in the years following her son’s death. Before then, yes, Harriet would have been compelled to unravel the mysteries enshrouding the renowned Lady of Whispers—but now, the fire of her curiosity has been doused by the icy blades of mourning, and thus she should have avoided Mona at all costs. After all, her son’s precious life was ripped away at the hands of ruling figures such as Mona. But as much as it sometimes feels like a betrayal to that crucial missing piece of her heart, the sentiment only lessens with each day that she spends in Mona’s company. She’s a woman who keeps her cards close to her chest, but in turn, Harriet has no cards of her own—and perhaps that is why Mona’s let her in as much as she has. There is a lot that eludes her about the infamous woman, no matter how close they’ve grown over the years, but that speck of distance, while it may be significant to others, is of no consequence to Harriet. She shares a kinship with Mona that she hasn’t found with anyone else, and that’s all that matters to her.
Harriet is portrayed by JENNA TALACKOVA and was written by JEN. She is currently TAKEN by EMMA K.

In fair Verona, our tale begins with MATTHIAS WARREN, who is THIRTY-THREE years old. He is often called MALCOLM by the MONTAGUES and works as their CAPTAIN. He uses HE/HIM pronouns.
Tumblr media
TW: DEATH
Some sons and daughters spend their whole lives trying to distance themselves from their parents, to distinguish themselves as their own person entirely, but Matthias Warren has done no such thing. Proud to be his father’s son and eager to be compared to the man who gave him life, he strove to follow in his father’s much larger footsteps as a child, wearing his old clothes and playing with toy guns in the hopes that one day, he might be HALF the man Marius Warren was. And whether he realized it or not, he got his wish; worn collared shirts turned into suits and toy guns turned into pistols, and day by day, an endearingly ambitious boy turned into a respectable man. He became his father’s equal, his brother-in-arms, a man worthy of bearing the Warren name. But he didn’t stop there; his father had been a Montague for years—longer than he’d let on when his young son had asked, he was sure—and despite Marius’s insistence that he avoid the mob and pursue a career of his own, the younger man was drawn to it, to the risk, the danger of defending one’s family with blood in your mouth and a finger on the trigger. As a child, he’d dreamed of being just like his father. Given the chance, he took it and RAN. But that wasn’t the only running Matthias Warren would ever do. A few short years after he joined the mob, he awoke one fateful Wednesday morning to the news that his father had been killed—shot down while out for a drink at a bar just across the Castelvecchio—and lost without the guidance of his idol, his best friend, he ran. He left the city to clear his head and avoided alcohol like the plague, suddenly determined to do things differently than his father had in order to avoid the same end. He took his time and mourned his father privately, comforted by the ANONYMITY of being in a city where no one knew either of their names, and once he’d come to terms with the fact that the man he’d aspired to be was gone, his next task was to make peace with his obligation to avenge his father’s death. It was his duty, one last way to honor his father’s name, but for all that he would’ve liked to storm back into the city, guns blazing and blades drawn, he knows that haste would do him no favors. REVENGE is an endeavor best pursued with much forethought, and it was this careful planning that kept him away from Verona a few months more. And plan he did. Ever his father’s son, he spent much of his time in Paris using whatever resources he could to pin down the guilty man and decipher how to ensure he would never get up again. He drew from his inheritance to hire eyes in Verona and and bribed an emissary to scour the records for him—he did anything and everything he could to complete the puzzle, to assemble piece by piece the picture of Marius Warren’s final hours. And now, nearly a year later, he’s almost certain he’s found his mark. They called him a coward, a son who looked retribution in the face and fled, but even SNAKES may pause before striking, and Matthias is nothing if not prepared. Prepared to make his father’s murderer pay for his sins—prepared to cut him down at his knees, for what better position is there to beg for mercy from? Not all that glitters is gold, and not all who wander are lost; in much the same way, not all who run are AFRAID. He’s returned to Verona with a vengeance, every ounce as vicious as he was when he left, and he won’t rest until he sees the man who killed his father buried six feet under. He’s been running for so long that he’s forgotten what it feels like to have both feet planted firmly on the ground, but the city should hold its breath in anticipation for the moment that he REMEMBERS, because men like him—righteous in their ways and justified in their revenge—are often more dangerous than those that seek to stop them. But dangerous or not, he’s not a monster. His enemy can take heart in the fact that he’s dealing with a man far more honorable than himself, but even HONOR calls for reparations, and he’s not afraid to take what he knows is his: retribution. As long as his father’s killer still breathes, no one is safe, for a man who does wrong for himself is fearsome, but a man who does wrong for another is terrifying.
Tumblr media
RAMONA AGUILAR: Companion. Ramona is relentless; often behaving like a tigress unleashed in long-overdue free reign and although he keeps warning her that her recklessness will be the end of her, he respects her for it. Unlike him, a man chained to his past and his loyalties, Ramona is a free spirit and it makes their encounters interesting, to say the least. She reminds him that there can be more to his existence than calculative tact and often entices him to be more impulsive with his actions which is a welcome change sometimes but not one he is really willing to give in to.
MIKAEL FALCO: Mark. All the signs point to him, and if Matthias has anything to do with it, the next thing that will be pointing in his direction is the barrel of a gun. He’s watched the man for quite some time, both through the keen eyes of another and with his own, and he’s been pleased to find that of he and his wife, the latter seems far more lethal. It almost makes him question whether Falco could’ve even committed the crime he’s convicted him of, but Warren knows the dangers of underestimating his enemy, and he refuses to lull himself into believing that the Capulet man will go down without a fight. He’s not sure whether or not he wants to be proven right. ALEXANDER RALLIS: Private adviser. Despite how conniving Matthias is, you can only go so far on your own and two heads are always better than one. With how tentative the situation is between the two mobs, Matthias can’t afford to make a single wrong move when executing his revenge—it’s imperative that he keep the broad picture in mind and who could assist him with that better than the renowned Montague adviser himself? He often goes to Alexander for advice and tactical guidance and the Rallis man indulges him, although Matthias is unsure why. Perhaps he finds his consultations to be mutually beneficial for the both of them but whatever his reasons are, he’ll help bring Matthias’s plans to fruition and that is all that matters. DELILAH BELLO: Interest. He first laid eyes on her while trying to get a feel for Mr. Falco’s favorite haunts, and he was intrigued enough by her to keep looking long after he’d found what he was searching for. There’s something in the way she carries herself, a sort of tried elegance in the way she moves, and he’s taken it upon himself to get closer, to introduce himself to and learn more about the woman the Capulets seem to treat like a plague. No stranger to feeling like an outsider himself after months out of the circuit, he empathizes with her, but with that empathy comes the acknowledgment that there’s always more to the story than what meets the eye. He just might be going crazy, but he wants to know hers.
Matthias is portrayed by CHARLIE HUNNAM and was written by BREE. He is currently TAKEN by HAYLEY.

Congratulations, HAYLEY! You’ve been accepted for the role of MALCOLM. Admin Jen: Upon first glance, one would assume that Matthias is an easily-understood character and I believe that he’s almost underestimated in that sense. But Hayley, you showed us that there’s definitely a lot more to him than meets the eye! Revenge is the focal point in his character but it’s not the only thing that defines him and I loved how you emphasized that with all the different aspects that you explored in Matthias. I especially loved the way that you explored his relationship with his father and all the intriguing developments that you touched on in your future plots. The interview was absolutely beautiful, as well. I loved Matthias’ eloquence and his deceptive poise. I also loved the way he expressed his thoughts during the interview - it was so riveting to read. Overall, your application was astonishing and I can’t wait to see our favorite usurper on the dash! Please read over the checklist and send in your blog within 24 hours.

Character | Malcolm / Matthias Warren
What drew you to this character? | Honestly I wanted someone who wasn’t gonna be as emotionless as Regina and I wanted someone who had a strong driving force motivating their thoughts and actions and what could be a better motivator than vengeance??
So, really, who is Matthias Warren without his father?
The short answer is no one.
There is a boy within the walls of a Montague who still feels the weight of grief years later. There is a boy who had to learn the hard way that his heroes were mortal, that even the gods could fall, that idolizing only set one up for disappointment. A name he carried with pride then dug into his shoulders with the sadness it brought. He spent his whole life wanting to be just like his father, and truly, he didn’t form that identity of his own. He only wanted to be a man who was not as strong as he had grown up believing. He wanted to be a man who was now dead.
Don’t get him wrong, he still wants to be that man, but he cannot be that man without the closure he has sought for so long. He would certainly not find it in Paris. He would not even find it in the Montague ranks, not until he did the one thing that he firmly believes would bring him that closure: he would only find it when the son of a bitch that took away everything that mattered to Matthias – his father’s guidance, his surname’s association with strength and invincibility, his mother’s security – was buried in a lesser plot than that in which his father rested right now.
Basically, he won’t stop until he has Mikael Falco begging for his mercy, regardless of whether it would be true justice or not.
But then what? There is a sense of self that has been lost, or perhaps it was never there. There is a sense of self yearning to be found in Paris, but a heavy grief and burning desire for vengeance stifled it. There is a sense of self longing to be found with the Montagues, so long as they fully accept him, of course. For he is the one who ran, the one who abandoned them, and the one who returned expecting to pick up right where he had left off. At least he didn’t betray them, he would say.
Now, there is the man who ran, but is not a coward. There is the man who seeks revenge, but can wait – he has for years, and he can wait a short time longer.
Who is Matthias Warren without his father? He is careful, he is conniving, he is thorough. He is welcomed, yet an outcast. He is a man with the weight of his surname on his shoulders, determined to carry it. He is a man out for revenge and a man with something to prove – thus, perhaps, he is the most dangerous man in Verona.
What is a future plot idea you have in mind for the character? |
Revenge is a dish best served with a gun to your head. I’d love to see Matthias go about his plot to avenge his father’s death! I can see a lot of avenues with it, as well. Obviously, this includes planning (because there is never enough planning in his mind), aid from Alexander (which is a connection I would love to explore!), and confronting Mikael. He wants to know his enemy inside and out to find the best avenue to destroy him. I can see him trying to grow close to Lucrezia to gain more information, to straight up chomping at the bit when he sees an opportunity he knows he cannot take. Will he succeed? Will it turn out that his mark actually isn’t the man who killed his father? Who knows! I’d love to explore his planning leading up to what he sees is a grand moment, and to see how he will finally seize what he’s been craving for a good portion of his life.
When the storm fades, what is left but destruction? I also want to explore what comes after the revenge plot. Matthias has always been a man focused on his father, whether he is trying to emulate him or trying to avenge him. He has never truly lived for himself, though he would tell you he was before his father’s death. Whether he actually succeeds in his revenge plot, fails, or it turns out Mikael is not the man who killed Marius, the plotting and waiting are over, the time to take action has since passed, and I’d love to explore what is left, what is next. It’s definitely going to have a shaky start, for this man has no foundation to build himself upon without revenge or his father to look up to. Perhaps he will try and be like his father, but falter without the man to guide him, or perhaps he will find a side of himself he never knew existed and feel a sense of fulfillment he never would have achieved just trying to follow in another man’s footsteps.
A name is all we have. I’m interested to see how Alexander’s use for Matthias plays out! There are also a lot of avenues I can see this going, depending on the actions Alexander does or does not take in regards to helping Matthias. Perhaps it ends in him outing Matthias’s plans and him facing consequences from the Montagues – in that case, I’d love to explore the devastation he’d experience, having tarnished his Montague affiliation, the one thing he wanted to gain back and polish to perfection to honor his late father. Perhaps Alexander doesn’t oust Matthias, either for personal gain or out of fear of loss – as in, what if one of them blackmails the other? In that case, I would love to see the character dynamic, either the betrayal Matthias may feel from someone he thought was on his side (did losing your father teach you nothing about looking to others Matthias?) or the ruthlessness he shows when he fears he has everything to lose.
Are you comfortable with killing off your character? | Um hell yeah (bonus points if it’s just like how his father died)
In Depth
In-Character Interview:
Tired eyes scan a room that is much less comfortable than it tries to disguise itself as. The coloring under them suggests a late night, and knowing Matthias, it was a late night looking over notes from his own personal collection as well as lesson plans, papers mixing together, the battles of man’s past meeting the battles of his own present – well, the battles being planned in the present, and hopefully, it would not be much of a battle at all. While part of him desired a drawn out and torturous revenge, the other part impatient with his own waiting and plotting, no matter how necessary he convinced himself it was. It was something he tried not to give much thought to, for he was here, in this room, and nowhere close to Falco.
When the door opened, his head shot to the entrance – a man, certainly not his mark, entered, appearing older than he was, with a quiet, professional demeanor to him. He gave Matthias a curt greeting before taking a seat across from him, sinking into a chair that was certainly not as plush as it appeared to be, but not as firm to avoid him from leaning back a bit too far as he tried to get comfortable. Save it, Matthias thought, I’ve been trying for twenty fuckin’ minutes.
“Mr. Warren, thank you for meeting me here,” his voice had a nasal-sounding aspect. Matthias already decided he wasn’t fond of him. “I will try and make this as brief as possible.”
“Good. Make it worth my time,” he commanded, though his voice sounded slightly disinterested already. Moments here seemed to be moments wasted, already knowing he was not going to walk away from this having gained something other than perhaps a minor headache at the smell of mothballs that coated the room (the whole building, actually, thanks to a mice problem).
“Um, what is your favorite place in Verona, sir?”
“Seriously?”
“Just answer the question, please.”
Matthias sighed, but tried to at least look like he was giving it a second or two of thought before answering. “Lamberti Tower. It has a view of Verona unlike any other.” That was only a partial truth. Truly, his favorite place was his childhood home that his mother still occupied, but technically it was just outside Verona, only down the street from the city’s limits. But even then, the walls of that home felt heavy with the presence of a man who no longer occupied it, though he did not mention this to his mother when they had dinner together on Sundays.
“Good, um, what does your typical day look like?”
Matthias wondered exactly what the purpose of these questions were, but he launched into a quick explanation, hoping it would be done with quickly. Sure, he could be charming, sure, he could play the part, but this morning, tiredness weighing on him, and sitting across from a man who he’d already written off, he was not in the mood. “I wake up, get ready, and go to work. First, it’s tasks for the Montagues, then after lunch I go to teach my class on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and after that, if I have no tasks left over from earlier in the day, I go home and have dinner. Then, I work on my lesson plans. Truly, I am not Verona’s most interesting man, but you will keep that a secret between you and me, no?” Again, this was not completely true, but the hours he spent researching Mikael Falco and planning revenge years in the making did not need to be known by this man.
“Of course… And, um, we’re going to get a little deeper, now; what has been your biggest mistake thus far?”
“Wow, that is… certainly a change in tone,” commented Matthias, raising a brow on his unamused expression. For the first time, he saw the first signs of nervousness from the man before him, which, he would admit, was a bit amusing. “Not being at that bar ten years ago. Next.” His tone was hard, warning the man not to press further. If he didn’t know what happened, he should not ask, at least, for his own good.
He seemed to pick up on the hint, and Matthias realized he could not completely label this man as a moron. “What has been the most difficult task asked of you?”
“To wait. To stay. To move on from an event I’ve found shaped me. People do not understand what a person is going through if it is not the exact same way they will deal with it. That does not mean I listened to such a ridiculous request.” He did not wait before running. He did not stay when his legs told him to go. He did not move on when his father was buried, he has not moved on. He may never, at this rate. Matthias never thought about how that may have been unhealthy.
There was obviously a lot of issues to be unpacked in that answer, and issues that the man sitting across from Matthias thought were best left sealed in the boxes they arrived in. Though he didn’t like him, Matthias may have still called the man smart. “What are your thoughts on the war between the Capulets and the Montagues?”
“There has always been a war, one my father was poised to lead us to victory in. It is the way of life and of man – where there are men, there is conflict, and on a scale as large as this, conflict arises in the form of war. It is inevitable. And, like every war, there will be a victor. I can only hope I have the privilege of earning the place my father held in leading the Montagues to victory after all these years. It is the same war, after all, simply with different stakes. And Warren men do not lose, no matter the stakes, no matter the war.”
The other man may have had more questions, but the way Matthias’s voice deepened as he closed his statement, the darkness that showed in his eyes, the bloodshed imagined behind their blue hue, must have shown something to the interviewer, something he truly did not want to dig into after learning he had unchained something dark, something he may have even feared to encounter. For he gave a quick thanks to Matthias for his cooperation and politely excused himself. A weasel, but a smart weasel, in the presence of a hungry wolf.
Extras:
Matthias’s second job is as a part-time history professor at a college! Specifically, war history.
With the timeline in my head, Marius Warren was killed approximately eight years ago (four years after Matthias joined the Montagues), and Matthias returned one year ago. This gives him nine years to plot in Paris, though most of this was spent getting multiple degrees so that he could be qualified to teach college history. Ironic, considering those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it, and he does not heed the warning that maybe trying to become Marius may cause him to suffer the same fate. ((I’m open to this being flexible, though!))
Pinterest (please ignore how there is seemingly 0 order to it this new pinterest organization format sucks and won’t let me organize it to my liking so i gave up)
