Hawkeye Pierce died in the line of duty October 20th, 1951. At least, that’s what they told Trapper when he tried to send him a care package. Two years later, there’s a ghost on the schedule at Boston General. Trapper goes hunting for the very much still alive Hawkeye Pierce. How’s a guy supposed to let the love of his life slip away without so much as a note?

This line drives me nuts. You mean you like casual sex and clearly communicate to your partners that you are only interested in casual sex?? And stop sleeping with women who want a more serious relationship because you want different things and aren't compatible?? It would actually be much worse to not go "bye-bye" if you were hooking up with someone who wanted a relationship when you didn't! That would be unfair and leading them on! The problem is the 1980s morality of this episode thinks Hawkeye is bad for having casual sex but he could redeem himself if the right girl convinced him to end his womanizing ways and get married and probably have children. It's not uncommon for someone to enjoy casual sex at one point in their life and later choose to be in a monogamous longterm relationship, but it's not a redemption and they're not more moral than before.

hawkeye and trapper get fake septums

Hawkeye turns to face him, revealing a septum piercing. "what's what, Frank?" he asks. Shocked and affronted by this breach in army regulations, he shouts, "I can't!! Believe you!! It's not enough for you to disagrace the army uniform by being out of it all the time? You have to go and--and do that! You look like a punk! Or a cow!"

On page 2, Hawkeye, unbothered, replies "Y'know, Frank, I'm finally living up to the Pierce name. I was thinking about going for some ear tag earrings. Maybe I can get a nurse to pull my udders." Frank howls, "That's disgusting!" Turning to Trapper he shouts, "Did you have anything to do with this, McIntyre?" Trapper pulls down the newspaper to reveal that he's wearing three septum rings and says, "I sure did! He stole my look!"

On page 3, Frank says "You're both terrible. Both of your butts are going on report!" while Hawkeye takes out his apparently fake septum ring behind his back. "Report for what, Frank?" he asks; Frank turns to see that the piercing is now missing. "Yeah, what's the matter, Frank?" Trapper says, whose piercing is suddenly missing as well. Frank storms off, yelling "Neither of you can pull the wool over my eyes!! Just wait until General Barker hears about this!" Some time later, Frank is standing next to General Barker, pointing at Hawk. "General, I'm telling you, the hole is THERE!" he shouts. "Go and take a look in those nostrils for yourself!" There is a long and awkward pause. The General did not like that. Hawkeye remarks, "Gee Frank, take a girl to dinner first." end id]

MASH is the show of all time because there’s some really excellent episodes about the nature of war, the nature of time, what it is to be a cog in the machine of empire, but then there’s the Hawkeye Goes On A Date With a Clumsy Girl Episode or The One Where The Goat Eats The Money 😕
