Gas Mask Collection Update: The M17A1

Today I received the latest addition to my gas mask collection: a US M17 gas mask - specifically, an M17A1 - dated 1969. That's 53 years old. As is typical of these masks when they age, the rubber is and clouded with pale bloom, and the dirty lenses have taken on a yellow tint. Along various creases and points of stress, the rubber has become dry and cracked. Some areas have an almost matte texture to them. It is also missing the cover of its left intake (not pictured), and some warping and weakness, particularly around the chin area.

The M17 series is known for its use by the United States military during the Vietnam War and the Gulf War, as well as for its numerous copies and derivatives fielded by other countries.

Deployed in 1959 as the ABC-M17, the mask utilizes an obsolete filter system called "cheek filters," in which twin internal filters are inserted into symmetrical pouches on either cheek. The design was later updated to the M17A1, which is what you see here, adding a drinking tube and M1 resuscitation tube. The latter was intended for resuscitating casualties through the mask, but seems to have been a failure at the conceptual level, as using it risked breaching the mask's seal due to air resistance - a dangerous prospect in any CBRN environment. Subsequently, this feature was removed entirely in the M17A2 model, which continued manufacture until the entire M17 series was phased out by the US military in the 80s and 90s, replaced by the M40 gas mask.

Despite its innovations, the M17 series has been criticized for a variety of reasons. Cheek filters are widely considered a dead end in gas mask technology, and wearers reported flaws in the mask's construction, namely that using the lever on the front of the assembly, which manipulated the interior parts of the drinking tube and resuscitation tube, would often result in breakage, ruining the mask. The facepiece is also a bit notorious for aging poorly, rapidly developing bloom and a yellowing of the lenses, both of which are visible on mine.

These last two pictures are a side-by-side comparison of the M17A1 and a Czech copy called the M10. As you can see, there are noticeable differences between the two, but the relation is clear. The M10 series would later add a drinking tube similar to the M17's in the M10M model.

Among gas masks, copies or clones are very common, and not necessarily a sign that a mask is "worse" in quality or design. The M17 series is a very widely copied pattern, essentially defining the look of cheek filter masks in the latter half of the 20th century.

Fun fact: M17s were produced by multiple companies working for the US government, including the tire company Firestone.

Unfortunately, that's about it for now. I don't have the full kit for the M17. It was a pretty fantastic deal online, but I knew what I was paying for. Having a piece of history, however dark, is to me one of the most important aspects of collecting military surplus. A mask that's seen the usage that this has, especially one produced in 1969, carries with it a lot of that history, and being able to hold one in your hands and study it is a very valuable experience for those who are interested.
