Understanding Steel Structure Connections: The Role of Bolts in Assembly In the realm of steel structures, bolting is one of the fundamental connection methods that links various components together. This technique plays an important role during the pre-assembly and installation phases of pre engineered steel building, making it the most preferred choice for builders and engineers alike.
Types of Steel Structure Bolts Bolts are of various types â screws, fasteners or standard partsâbut fundamentally, they all serve as fasteners. Bolts can be categorized into ordinary bolts, high-strength bolts, anchor bolts, expansion bolts and chemical anchors. However we will focus on ordinary and high-strength bolts.
Ordinary Steel Structure Bolts
Ordinary bolts can be classified into two main types: coarse and refined bolts.
Coarse Bolts: These are made from carbon structural steel with a hole diameter that is 1.0 to 2.0mm larger than the nominal diameter for smooth insertion. While their low strength limits their use, coarse bolts are ideal for secondary beams, wall skin beams and temporary connections during assembly of PEB steel structures.
Refined Bolts: These are characterized by a hole diameter equal to the screw diameter. Majorly used in mechanical applications rather than in steel structure buildings as they require precise machining. They are designed for connections that need frequent disassembly.
High-Strength Steel Structure Bolts
High-strength bolts are engineered to endure significant pre-tensioning forces. They rely on friction to transmit external loads which is enhanced by ensuring that the connection plates are tightly pressed together upon bolt tightening.
Categories of High-Strength Bolts
High-strength bolts are further divided into two types based on their stress conditions:
Friction-Type High-Strength Bolts: These bolts rely on the friction generated at the contact surface to transfer external forces. Through surface treatments the friction coefficient can be increased, thereby reducing the number of bolts required.
Pressure-Bearing High-Strength Bolts: In this case, the connection transmits stress through both friction and the shear force exerted on the boltâs axis. However, these bolts can slide under certain conditions, which can impact their performance.
Special Bolts and Their Applications
Large Hexagonal High-Strength Bolts: This includes a bolt, nut and two washers. During construction, coarse bolts are used temporarily which are later replaced by high-strength bolts after the structure is aligned.
Torsional Shear High-Strength Bolts: These are similar in function to large hexagonal bolts which require only one washer during installation. They use a specific torque value for tightening for maintaining structural integrity.
Anchor Bolts: Essential for connecting steel structures to concrete foundations they are typically made of Q235B or Q355B steel and require precise installation to ensure stability.
Chemical Anchors: These are made of chemical agents and metal rods which offer a versatile solution for attaching structures to existing concrete. They can compensate for oversights in construction, such as forgotten embedded parts.
Expansion Bolts: Designed for lighter loads, expansion bolts provide anchorage in concrete but should not be used in critical structural applications.
Specifications and Material Grades
Steel structure bolts come in various specifications, commonly ranging from M12 to M30, where âMâ denotes the bolt type and the number indicates its nominal diameter. Further these bolts are classified into performance grades from 3.6 to 12.9. Grades above 8.8 are considered as high-strength bolts, while those below come under ordinary bolts.
Conclusion
Understanding the various types of steel structure bolts and their applications is vital for effective construction of pre engineered steel buildings and structural integrity. As the industry continues to grow, the role of bolts in facilitating strong, reliable connections will remain of utmost importance. Whether through high-strength technology or innovative anchoring solutions, bolts will continue to play a critical role in the assembly of steel structures

How To Use Wall Plugs
If you want to mount anything on a brick or concrete wall, plasterboard or other hard surface (other than wood), youâre sure to need wall plugs. These give a firm hold in solid materials, or anchor themselves in hollow materials or panels.
What kind of wall plug should I use? Each building material needs a specific kind of wall plug. Different kinds of wall plugs are available for special situations, and these often give a stronger mouting than universal wall plugs. After youâve found the right kind of wall plug for the job, the next step is to choose the right size. The drill bit diameter is the same as the wall plug diameter. This is usually indicated on the wall plug, for example S6 for a wall plug and drill bit diameter of 6 mm.
Universal wall plugs The classical nylon wall plug is available in different basic types. When you tighten the screw the wall plug expands, so it anchors itself firmly in the wall. Drill the hole with a hammer drill and tap the plug gently into place. Then you can fit the screw. Make sure you use a type of screw that is suitable for use with wall plugs, and that has the right length and thickness for the wall plug youâre using.
Hammer fixings These wall plugs contain a steel nail or special screw which is driven into place in the plug with a hammer. This is a lot faster than using a conventional screw, and is ideal for fitting plinths, wooden beams, window frames, ceiling panels and wall cladding. If necessary you can tighten the screw with a screwdriver after driving it into place.
Butterfly wall plugs These nylon wall plugs are intended for use in hollow walls and consist of 2 sections. When the screw is tightened, the back part of the plug is folded double towards the front of the plug. Another variant is the butterfly plug. This has 4 âwingsâ, and is ideal for mounting in shallow holes. You can use these wall plugs for hanging paintings, light mirrors and other light items. This kind of plug gives a strong grip in plasterboard and similar materials.
Anchor bolts These wall plugs are intended for fixings that have to support heavy loads such as large shelves or racks. An M12 anchor bolt can usually support a load of up to 200 kg. When the nut or hook is tightened, the conical anchor is pulled inwards. The resulting pressure causes the metal segments to expand and press strongly against the surrounding material.
Plasterboard plug This plug forms a thicker section inside or behind a hollow wall. When a screw is inserted and tightened the segments expand and fold out like an umbrella. These plugs can be used with different kinds of panels, and are also suitable for mounting light items on ceilings.
Toggle plug Toggle plugs are mainly used in ceilings and hollow walls. They have spring-loaded âwingsâ mounted on a screw thread. The plug is pushed through the hole with the wings closed. and these then spread out when they are released and the screw is tightened.

A Little Tid Bit About the History of Drills
Along with cordless phones and shavers, the cordless drill is amongst the most successful gadgets produced by modern technology. If you know using a drill, you can easily figure out how to use a cordless drill. These are simply battery operated power drills that work like any other drill, minus the cord! Diamond core drilling method may be exercised for construction mechanism applications, water system applications, earthwork quality assessment application, electrical process applications, gas supply applications, heating applications, railway establishing application, bridge creating application, plumbing application, telecommunication line fitting application, concrete section analysis, anchoring bolts, and then for mining application. The main category of this method is Rotary and Wire-line. Rotary strategy is useful for borehole as well as coring in rocks. Wire-line is useful for mineral exploration moreover it intends for not to produce a hole but to salvage a core sample. The M18 RedLithium battery also boasts superior technology and functionality. Offering 5X more recharges than leading competitors, the Milwaukee Fuel battery pack is compact and seriously efficient. In fact, the tool can drive more than 500 screws in dense wood per each charge. Milwaukee battery technology (RedLink Plus) offers total system communication with overload protection as well as the battery itself also displays its remaining run-time with an integrated fuel gauge. The tool comes with 2 M18 compact RedLithium battery packs as well as a multi-voltage 30-minute charger that allows users to charge both Milwaukee's M18 (18v) M12 (12v) batteries with similar charging unit (and in only 30-minutes). The machines that are used by industrial and commercial purposes, for example construction of buildings, are powered by electricity. They are especially meant to be employed for an extended duration. Moreover, the drilling equipment which might be used for making holes in metallic sheets are incredibly full of strength and capability. These durable machines offer high functionality and durability. bosch drill price These types of equipment are primarily found in the steel industry. Given the advancements in technology, this type of power tool has become taken into different modifications. It may be put through being transformed into a lot handier version therefore it could be used anywhere at any time. One of its newest and riveting versions is the cordless type. This one doesn't need to be plugged into an electrical source for it to be operated. It just requires a handful of batteries for this to perform.

M12 x 200mm although can be longer I also brought some M12 x 200mm coach bolts to complete the job, I did get a bag of postcrete from a rival DIY store when I returned home. The weeked after our holiday, my brother said he would do the job for me. First of all we tied some rope round the broken post to pull it upright and tied to other end securely to the fence post the other side of the garden. My brother then dug a whole about 2 foot deep, we put in the concrete repair spur, drilled the holes through to the fence posts (using my Dads drill), and put in the bolts in the top and bottom holes, although 200mm long they don't quite go right through enough to put e fence posts (using my Dads drill), and put in the bolts in the top and bottom holes, although 200mm long they don't quite go right through enough to put the nuts on the other end, but my brother said this should be okay as they are quite a tight fit. We might try and get some longer bolts to put in the middle hole to make it more secure. We then poured the postcrete in the hole and added the water. It soon set hard and the next day I removed the rope, all seems very sturdy now,
