Two fresh looks at the 1918 flu pandemic that rocked the world
Two fresh looks at the 1918 flu pandemic that rocked the world
Karen R. Long  Newsday
A century ago, a virulent, highly contagious flu infected an estimated one-third of the globe. Somewhere between 50 and 100 million people died. The 1918 influenza took more lives in 15 months than AIDS has claimed in 40 years and buried more than the bubonic plague killed in a century.
A submicroscopic virus composed of just eight genes would turn out to be the killer, wiping out “more humans than any other disease in a period of similar duration in the history of the world,” as historian Alfred W. Crosby put it.
Very few witnesses remain among us, but a tower of books - including Crosby's influential 1989 “America's Forgotten Pandemic” - has sought to document the scale of the horror.
British schoolchildren slumped dead at their desks, and German furniture vans hauled bodies scattered in the streets to the cemeteries. Panicked South Africans threw dying miners from trains to expire along the tracks. In days, sometimes in hours, the flu would start with a dull headache or burning eyes, then chills and fever. Almost all the infected would live, but for an unlucky 2.5 percent, the lungs filled with a reddish fluid, the lips and ears turned dusky blue and the victim's feet turned black. The struggle for air produced a hellish cough that mimicked a duck's quack. Doctors couldn't stop it or treat it or even pinpoint its cause.
Jeremy Brown, a London-trained emergency room physician who now directs the NIH Office of Emergency Care Research, turns indignant in his new book, “Influenza: The Hundred-Year Hunt to Cure the Deadliest Disease in History,” at the quackery his field once perpetrated. His first chapter, “Enemas, Bloodletting, and Whiskey,” unpacks the nonsense - and harm - physicians threw at their patients, including killing many of them with aspirin overdoses.
“The flu is still a serial killer,” Brown notes, adding that it “is certainly not 'the emperor of all maladies,' as cancer was described by the oncologist Siddhartha Mukherjee, but it is the malady of all empires. It has been with us since the dawn of time, and it has afflicted each civilization and society in every corner of the globe.”
A second Brit, journalist Catharine Arnold, has timed her own flu retrospective to the centennial. “Pandemic 1918: Eyewitness Accounts from the Greatest Medical Holocaust in Modern History” is not above a lurid subtitle, but its psychologist author picks a better opener for her book.
She begins in an English churchyard 10 years ago, where an Oxford don is exhuming the body of Sir Mark Sykes, a prime-of-his life British diplomatfelled as he helped negotiate the peace in Paris after World War I. Buried in a lead casket, which delaysdecomposition, the corpse was hoped to retain enough soft tissue to enablescientists to extract the virus. (It didn'twork. The lead coffin had cracked.) Grave excavations provide colorful anecdotes in both books. Most led to disappointments, but
one - in Brevig Mission, Alaska - hit pay dirt in 1997 when a 73-year-old Swedish scientist returned to the far-northern permafrost. He found that the extra fat on an obese flu victim preserved enough of the 1918 virus in one of the four samples he culled from her body to help unlock the virus' RNA pedigree.
Brown tells this story with a welcome scientific crispness, but Arnold supplies the telling human details: The Swede names the silent donor “Lucy” in a nod to the famous hominid unearthed in Ethiopia. Both of these books' covers feature the same striking 1918 photograph, a cavernous, crowded emergency ward of stricken soldiers at Camp Funston in central Kansas. This photo also illustrates an excellent 2017 Smithsonian Magazine article on the pandemic from historian John M. Barry.
Readers wanting a briefer foray should find it online. “The Great Influenza,” Barry's 2004 book, is better written than either of the two new volumes. So is “Flu” by science journalist Gina Kolata.
The new works, then, must make fresh information their justification. Here, Brown's book is superior to Arnold's meander through the archives. He depicts the shortfalls of big data in flu tracking, the pitfalls in our annual flu vaccinations and the scandalous medical politics bedeviling Tamiflu and similar treatments.

'Goodnight, my Dearest Darling'
Tumblr media
Jean Harlow was making her last film Saratoga, costarring Clark Gable. One day she was out ill with what they said was a cold. William Powell took the afternoon off work to take care of her, bringing her chicken soup and ice cream. There are different reports of her final days.
"Only three weeks before she was stricken with the malady that was to end her life, she came to the studio carrying a cake with her. She was as pleased as a little girl with it.
"'This is our third anniversary cake,' she said laughing at the three little candles decorating the top. 'Bill sent it because it was the anniversary of our first date.'"
-- Louella O. Parsons article, The Milwaukee Sentinel, June 15, 1937
Tumblr media
Later things took a turn for the worse. Violet Denoyer an MGM makeup artist and friend of Jean Harlow's was applying the star's make up for Saratoga. "Suddenly, Miss Denoyer said, Miss Harlow looked at her and said, 'You know, Violet I have a feeling I'm going away from here and never coming back.'
"Two hours later while she was on the set, she turned to Robert Golden a director and gasped, 'I'm terribly sick, Red. Call Bill.'
"She referred to William Powell, suave film star who had been her constant escort for more than a year. Since Christmas she had worn a huge star sapphire ring on the third finger of her right hand. It was a gift from Powell. He and a studio nurse took her home the day she became ill. Miss Harlow never returned. Powell was with her when she died."
-- St. Petersburg Times, June 9, 1937
Tumblr media
"This is the last photograph of the beautiful star
and was taken during the final scenes of Saratoga,
an M-G-M film in which she was starred with Clark Gable."
-- 1937 article about the funeral
She was doing Saratoga. We sat in the back of the car. Jean was on my left and she looked very fragile and she had the ring that Bill Powell had given her, it was a big star sapphire. It was on her finger and her hands looked almost too Newspaper accounts of her death talked of Powell's being at her bedside.frail to lift that big ring.
Tumblr media
"And I said, 'Jean you don't look very well.'
"And she said 'I feel awful, just awful,' she said. 'I don't know if I can finish the picture.'"
-- Maureen O'Sullivan was another big MGM star, a friend of Powell and Harlow. She appeared in The Thin Man to name just one of her many famous films. O'Sullivan is also the mother of actress Mia Farrow. Quote from Harlow Biography.
William Powell went to her home and was one of those instrumental in having her transferred to a hospital.
As said, there is debate as to whether they were engaged or not at the time of her death, there's even debate as to whether or not they were still a couple. Not unusually with a romance like theirs and a big star dies young, different stories began circulating quickly. The press is eager for any news.
William Powell spoke in a very rare interview about Jean Harlow's death. He seemed moved to respond in 1964-65 by a biography and films that were coming out. Powell said no one thought her illness was that serious. They thought she'd be back at work in a few days. He went to see her on Sunday. From the article....
"She startled me and said, 'You look fuzzy.'
"'I don't, really?' I joked. But I was suddenly worried. I held up my hand. 'How many fingers can you see?' I asked her. She couldn't see any. This was very disturbing.
"I called the doctor and asked him to come right away. In a matter of minutes he was there. He took one look at her and called for an ambulance.
"Mrs. Bello and I rode with her to The Good Samaritan Hospital where she was put immediately into an oxygen tent.
"We spent the night in the hospital, but Jean was in a coma and didn't know we were there. In the morning, she died."
The date was June 7, 1937. After almost three decades, Bill's voice broke and it was hard for him to go on.
His final gift to the girl he loved and admired was a $25,000 crypt at Forest Lawn Memorial Park for Jean and for the mother he adored when her time would come. They are there together in death, very close, as they were in their time on earth.
-- The Miami News, January 10, 1965
A fire chief who'd come to the hospital was interviewed. Members of the city fire department inhalator squad called at the last minute to furnish oxygen for the declining star.
Some papers said that her final word was his name, and he had been too choked up to respond. Some articles at the time and years later said that she'd died in his arms. "But it was too late then," Recalls Powell. "She was too far gone. She died in my arms. It was the saddest day of my life."
 -- The Tuscaloosa News, December 13, 1964
Tumblr media
Motion Picture Daily Magazine displayed an image
of Jean Harlow's photograph and a grieving MGM lion.
Anything and everything was reported. Her half-hysterical mother urging her to keep fighting. Their friend, actor Warner Baxter paced outside her death chamber in the hall. And the inevitable, "Powell was wearing a sports suit and polo shirt without a necktie."
What killed Jean Harlow? People began having theories immediately. Some wanted to place blame, talk of how it could have been prevented while those closest to her were in still in shock and grieving.
She died of uremic poisoning, better known as acute renal failure or kidney failure in June 1937, her age was justïżœïżœ26. This was a time before dialysis and kidney transplants.
Motion Picture Daily ran this note:
"Loew's Spooner in the Bronx and Loew's Astoria, Astoria, L.I. which are showing Personal Property in which Jean Harlow appears will stop the shows for one minute today. The shows will be halted at the time funeral services are to be held in Glendale, Cal."
Jean Harlow's Funeral:
Guests were limited to 200-250 people. Myrna Loy, Spencer Tracy, Carole Lombard, Warner Baxter, Una Merkel, Maureen O'Sullivan, W.S. Van Dyke, Robert Montgomery were there.
Clark Gable was a pall bearer. Nelson Eddy sang Ah, Sweet Mystery of Life and Jeannette MacDonald sang The Indian Love Call.  Powell sat beside Jean's mother at the funeral. His own mother sat on his other side.
Jean Harlow's first and third husbands, Charles McGrew and Hal Rosson, were in attendance.
"Her second husband was Paul Bern, a film producer whose death a few months after their wedding is still somewhat mysterious, without full explanation of motives for suicide."
-- Gettysburg Times, June 9, 1937
Tumblr media
The service was temporarily interrupted by the drone of aeroplanes overhead."
Police guards were there to keep the crowds back, though fans got in after the services to take souvenirs such as flower petals.
"Barred from the funeral service yesterday a crowd waited for hours outside the cemetery hoping at least to see some of the 200 film notables inside.
"This they missed but after the brief service was finished and everybody was gone, they rushed through unlocked gates and scrambled for bits of the thousands of flowers.
"Some had to be content with tiny scraps of ferns. One little girl placed in her purse a few petals from a rose."
-- The Tuscaloosa News, June 10, 1937
Carole Lombard is reported to have said to Clark Gable, "Paw, don't ever let them do this to me." Gable and Lombard would marry in 1939. Tragically, Lombard, who helped Powell through his grieving for Jean Harlow, was killed in a plane crash only five years later in 1942.
Similarly, in 1958, Gable would tell wife, Kay Williams that he didn't want to have a funeral like the large one given to actor Tyrone Power, who'd died of a heart attack. In November 1960, Clark Gable himself died of a heart attack. The wives of both Power and Gable were pregnant at the times of their husbands' deaths.
Reports of Jean Harlow's funeral said that "the services were simple, brief and unostentatious." Others said that MGM boss, Louis B. Mayer had orchestrated something like a scene in a Hollywood film.
"As a special tribute, all film studios were observing one minute of silence at 9 o'clock."
There are photos of an anguished Powell wearing dark glasses. He helped Jean's mother to her car. But other photos show his own mother, Mrs. Nettie Powell and Otis Wiles friend and studio attache on either side of him. Another friend, it's said is behind him just in case.

Wee Kirk O' the Heather
in Forest Lawn Memorial Park
The flower blanket made of 500 gardenias and 1500 lilies of the valley that covered the casket were from from Bill's father William Powell, Sr., his mother and Jean Harlow's mother.
One floral token, however went with the platinum blonde screen star to her resting place. Placed in her hand just before the casket was closed for the last time. It was a single gardenia, her favorite flower, with the inscription, 'Good-night my dearest darling.' The card was unsigned but the handwriting was believed to be that of William Powell, constant escort of Miss Harlow of recent months, who was among the most obviously grief-stricken at the funeral."
-- The Evening Independent, June 10, 1937

Londres 22-3-2017 SincĂšres CondolĂ©ances Ă  Nos Amis Anglais Et Londoniens, ainsi qu'Aux Familles Ayant perdu un Ëtre Cher,  hier dans ce terrible attentat de Londres, de mĂȘme nous pensons aux 40 blessĂšs, et Ă  nos 3 lycĂ©ens français, ainsi qu'aux personnes traumatisĂ©s dont les sĂ©quelles auront du mal Ă  s'en remettre, et Ă  tout ces familles directement touchĂ©s par ce drame, de la patience et beaucoup de courage Aussi, nous, nous garderons Ă  vie, dans notre mĂ©moire ces attentats meurtriers, commis par des fanatiques  dans tous les pays du monde, et n'oublierons jamais de leurs rendre les hommages, Ă  tous ceux qui ont du subir des prĂ©judices et de la peine AmitiĂ©s MARTINE ANCIAUX ET THOMAS AndrĂ© London 22-3-2017 Sincere Condolences to Our Friends English And Londoners, as well as To Those Families Having lost a Being Dear yesterday in this terrible London attack, so we think about the 40 wounded, and our 3 French high school students, as well as the traumatized persons whose The after-effects will be hard to recover, and to all those families directly affected by this drama, patina and a lot of courage We, therefore, will keep in our memory these murderous attacks committed by fanatics in all the countries of the world, and we will never forget to pay homage to those who have suffered prejudice and Sentence With all our Friendship MARTINE ANCIAUX ET THOMAS AndrĂ© 20 aoĂ»t 2015 "I'll Remember You" de Elvis Presley 19-09-2015 Il est des maladies trĂšs difficiles Ă  simplement Ă©voquer, l'alzheimer est une de ces maladies dont la perte de vie du malade devient insoutenable Ă  voir, ou Ă  subir, pour autant doit on les abandonner?
Google translation 19-09-2015 MEMORY © POEME THOMAS ANDRE © As far as I remember, But already, my memory concerns me, I, who could memorize everything, I feel prisoner of the traumatized brain. Neurons that wither, and die, Memories that are lost more and more, And I, who do not understand, Pending the definition of a disease, scary, and we die. So the little life I have left, I spray my heyday, videos, and I rant, Not being able to have, For there, unfortunately I have more power. Feelings of joy, Remain in me, But also deep sorrow in me, How I, the unbeatable addresses and names to remember it I have more joy. Also these images, comfort me, And my eyes with tears grieve, Annoying to suffer so much, And yet, what am I not beaten not suffer. Playing scrabble, and word games, And now there are moments where I lack the words, Those of trade, Those conversations, which coexist and mingle. So little, enjoying the moment, Screw him intensely, And do not forget ever, And I'll repeats, may your memory, leave you your memories forever.

(45/)100 Books, 2016
I started 2016 with the insane goal to read 100 books in 12 months- foolishly forgetting that I would be returning to medical school mid-year and naturally trading in leisure reads for Robbins, Bates, and Harrison. Still have no regrets about attempting to read more last year however, and can confidently say I came across some of the best books I’ve read in my 25 years on this planet.
In the photograph above are the top 6 titles I picked up in 2016. Three about medicine, three about food (which should tell you so much about what my year was like).

Voracious: A Hungry Eater Cooks her Way through Great Books by Cara Nicoletti

Medical images are crucial to saving lives. Health care experts use X-rays, ultrasounds, and more to uncover secret maladies and confirm that organ systems are up to speed. But what if they need to go deeper, to the cellular level, to dig into a biological mystery? For those cases, scientists turn to microscopy to take sharp, detailed photographs through 10x or 100x lenses. Or they rig their own setups with tools from their labs.
The 2020 MIT Koch Institute Image Awards speak to that innovative spirit by highlighting artful, unique points of view in science. The selections aren’t just focused on medicine: Aquatic critters, nanoflowers, and cell-on-cell drama also share the spotlight. But the array of photos on cancer and brain research strike a chord, effectively demonstrating the biggest challenges—and possibilities—in understanding how life works.

The Jaklenec group in the Langer Lab at MIT is modifying the microfabricated capsules—originally created as a single-shot vaccine delivery system—to accommodate the co-delivery of chemotherapy with other treatment approaches such as immunotherapy or gene therapy. They took the image to understand the mechanism behind the cargo’s release. The pink color comes from the red dye being used as a proxy for the combination of interest.

How do individual gene alterations affect a tumor’s response to treatment? Each column in the grid represents a single cell line’s vulnerability to 21 different cancer drugs (one per row), out of more than 200 tested. Blue and green show sensitivity while red and pink show resistance—the cooler the color, the more likely a cell with that mutation is to be killed by that drug. The combined data present a series of “signatures” that the Hemann Lab at MIT can use to identify how drugs work and in which patients they can be most effective.

Building a neural network
Like children in gym class, young brain cells pull themselves up a rope-like fiber to form a neuronal network. Near the hollow, fluid-filled ventricle (lower left) teardrop-shaped neurons are undifferentiated, having recently split off from their mother cells. As they migrate outward toward the cortical plate, leapfrogging over one another, they mature and anchor near the pial surface (blue and green) to assume their final positions in the developing brain. Walsh Lab researchers at MIT created this architectural map to better understand how a cell’s position and lineage influence its fate.

Growing cancer cultures
The Yilmaz Lab at MIT uses miniature organs, known as organoids, to study the events leading to tumor initiation. Cells are taken from the large intestine and genetically modified to manifest common cancer-associated mutations. Seeding the engineered organoids (large white spheres) side by side with non-mutated colon organoids (blue and green) allows researchers to track and compare their growth in three dimensions. Changing the growth conditions or introducing therapeutics into the co-cultured system will help the team identify the earliest possible interventions to limit cancer progression.

Scanning lymph nodes
The objects seen here are lymph nodes—organs where immune cells learn how to respond to health threats. The Irvine Lab at MIT studies ways to target delivery of antigens and other biological training materials to the lymph nodes so that the immune system can best make use of them. This imaging experiment allows researchers to “see” the amount of antigen (red shows more, blue shows less) that gets into each lymph node, helping to identify the most effective vaccination approaches. These findings could aid in the design of new technologies for diseases that do not yet have working vaccines, such as HIV and cancer.
