Once again thinking about how Father's Day explains so much about Margaret.

It's so clear how much pleasing her father means to her from the very beginning, how uncertain his love for her feels. It's all in the way she's looking for his approval! Substituting a natural need for love and affection with the hope that he'll approve of her nurses, that she salutes well enough and he's satisfied with the tent she prepared for him.

There's so much of Margaret to be seen in the way Alvin refuses to be human even in front of his own daughter and still expects her to love him, to be completely fine with all of that. And it perfectly parallels the way Margaret refused to be human in front of her nurses, aka the people she's responsible to take care of, until she realised that wasn't the right way to go about it. Until they showed her, and explained to her, that opening up is the only way other people will let you in. But her initial approach to them (demand only the best, don't let them see the cracks, don't let them see you might have human needs too) makes so much sense when you see her interact with her father, because that's clearly everything she's ever been shown by the person she looks up to most in life. Love = admiration and respect for her and yeah. That ties in perfectly with who Alvin is both as a person and a father.

Not to mention how much more sense it makes that all of her lovers represent the army in one way or another. (Except for Hawkeye in Comrades in Arms, but that seems like a whole other kind of performance both of them were putting up based on their notions of what a man and a woman are Supposed to want and be doing when confined in close quarters — but that's a whole other subject.)

And I feel like this also perfectly explains why she started something with Frank in the first place, and kept it up for so long. He respected and admired her and he was Army enough for her to sort of automatically respect him. And love = respect, right?

Anyway. Margaret in this episode was super similar to early seasons Margaret and I can't help but think that pleasing the military used to be equal to pleasing her father/living up to his expectations, at least for the first ±5 seasons. That's all that mattered to her for so long until she opened up to the rest of the 4077th and they changed her for the best with their love that, for once in her life, didn't depend on rank or perfection.
