Frank Goes to Maine
Tumblr media
I’ve decided to continue my Frank Goes to Maine fic that I started a while back. The plot of each chapter is decided via Tumblr poll. After each chapter is posted, the best four suggestions i receive (via ao3 comments or tumblr interactions, etc) will go into a tumblr poll a few days later and everyone can vote for their favorite plot line.
Chapter 2 ends with BJ interrupting Hawkeye and Frank having sex, intending to confess his love to Hawkeye:

The REAL hubris of Alan Alda Knuckle tattoos
Tumblr media
Hello Mashblr! It is I, The Person with Alan Alda Knuckle Tattoos. (picture for reference)
I thought I'd tell a story.
So I got these like, two years ago. MASH is my favorite television show of all time, and I thought this was a pretty iconic idea. At the time, I was working as a technical writer, basically.
Recently, I took an EMT course with my partner and realized that I have a real passion for emergency medicine. I'm currently in the process of getting hired by an ambulance service, and I hope to move up to being a higher level provider in the future (Paramedic, Nurse Practitioner, Physician's Assistant, etc.)
Now, you may be already understanding why it would look absolutely silly for me to have ALAN ALDA knuckle tattoos while working in emergency medicine-- but you stop yourself. "A-ha, KH!" you shout "You have to wear gloves! Nobody will see them, then!"
And you'd be right. None of my patients have to see them.
But I cannot wear nitrile gloves to a job interview.
So I have to show up and look my deputy chief in the eye and shake their hand and explain that my desire for a career in emergency medicine and my ALAN ALDA knuckle tattoos have nothing to do with each other, I swear!!!

#are they worth reading?
Mmm I'm too biased to answer that.
I'd recommend that you, as a fan of the franchise, try the first novel, which the movie and tv show were based on. Maybe watch the movie first if you haven't yet. If you like the first novel you'll probably like the other two that are Hooker's byline alone, M*A*S*H Goes to Maine and M*A*S*H Mania.
The rest as a group are an entirely different genre, which isn't to say you won't like them but liking the other three is no measure. Try one before getting more'n one. M*A*S*H Goes to New Orleans is chronologically first of them if that matters; it's set after M*A*S*H Mania but it and the other Butterworth collaborations were published between Maine and Mania.
Just how many different versions of M.A.S.H. are there I seem to keep discovering new ones

A lot of sitcom endings are like "This moment is sad because the gang is splitting up and everyone's going their separate ways, it's the end of an era but there are good things ahead and we'll always remember the memories we've shared. Here's a bittersweet pop song."
The ending of Mash is like "The protagonist just had a mental break after years of repeated exposure to the worst of humanity. The man he loves is going home to his perfect suburban family, leaving him alone and adrift. It's unlikely he'll ever fully recover from what he's been through. The fan favourite side character recieved a traumatic head injury, he's going home permanently deaf and none of the other characters know because he hid the information from them. People might be going home but the war isn't over, it's never over, war will never be over as long as there are humans on earth to wage it. We'll see you all next year for the worst spinoff to ever air on television."
